00:00:00The veteran Roger Saulbein number 12 will be the quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys.
00:00:08And for the New York Giants also number 12 the rookie from northern Illinois Jerry Goldstein.
00:00:14We're at Texas Stadium in the city of Irving between Dallas and Fort Worth and a sellout
00:00:21crowd fills this magnificent structure for the game between the Dallas Cowboys and the
00:00:26New York Giants.
00:00:27Good afternoon I'm Pat Summerall with Tom Brookshire and I hate to start on the negative
00:00:33aspect but the hot weather is going to be a factor here in this contest this afternoon.
00:00:37And the Giant bench is in the sunlight but Andy Robustelli the Giant GM said if the sun
00:00:41does move so maybe they'll score late.
00:00:42I knew he'd know something like that.
00:00:45Realistically Tom what do you think of the Giants chances?
00:00:47Well Goldstein a rookie quarterback is not easy for the rest of the team.
00:00:50I do think they have to go outside to Moorhead Robinson early to stretch out that good Dallas
00:00:54defense.
00:00:55And I would say if he's the same doctor that intimidated before they can keep him inside
00:00:59and they're pretty honest.
00:01:00A lot of people have wondered about the whereabouts of last year's Heisman Trophy winner Tony
00:01:04Dorsett.
00:01:05And the reason he's on the bench is another very good at Preston Pearson just did a fantastic
00:01:10job and actually beat Dorsett out during the training camp so they said the best player
00:01:14should win.
00:01:15That's the way the Dallas team is.
00:01:16And I really don't think that Dallas knows how good a football team they are yet.
00:01:20All right Tom let's get down and pick up what's going on on that hot field this afternoon.
00:01:24The Giants have won the toss.
00:01:26They will receive the kickoff of Bryn Herrera.
00:01:29Number one for the Dallas Cowboys you see right there we'll kick it off.
00:01:35And throughout the afternoon you'll see those shadows creeping across the field and as Andy
00:01:39Robicelli said to Tom Brooks just before the sun does move and that spot's going to be
00:01:45moving throughout the day and obviously causes us some problems with our camera going from
00:01:50the shade to the sun like that.
00:01:52It causes the players problems to Gordon Bell and Bobby Hammond are deep for the Giants
00:01:57and this is a friend Herrera starting his strut for the kickoff.
00:02:10About the 30 good return for Bobby Hammond they got the wedge in front and they got it
00:02:14moving.
00:02:15Here's the offensive line for the Giants now.
00:02:18It's a pretty active one for Bell Van Horn now move the guard where he plays much better
00:02:22he'll be due to be from the WFL play a pretty good center big John Hicks at right guard
00:02:28and of course Mullen now moves the right side receivers Jimmy Robinson and Moorhead wide
00:02:34and Bob Ducker the tight end.
00:02:35That's the backfield goal seeing the quarterback Doug Coder number 44 and Larry Zanka Zanka
00:02:43of course is thirty nine its first down Giants at their own 30 yard line first offensive
00:02:49play for Goldstein he takes the coder and fires to the outside and finished the Robinson
00:02:54Benny Barnes was close to him dealing from the sun into the shadows and that is the young
00:03:02man from northern Illinois who missed last year because of a bad knee.
00:03:07He's big though at 6 4.
00:03:08Here's that defense that's too tall.
00:03:10Joe Jethro Pugh of course Randy White the rhinoceros and right tackle and played very
00:03:15well and big Harvey Martin who turned him on last week.
00:03:18The linebackers Henderson Brunig and P.E.
00:03:20Lewis and a secondary Barnes Aaron Kyle Charlie Waters and Cliff Harris that might be as good
00:03:28a defensive unit as there is on second down Doug Coder does not quite get back to the
00:03:35line of finish the whole front for the ones we just named.
00:03:39You and white in particular the two tackles pitched it off here is where the Giants must
00:03:45make the Dallas team play play on it.
00:03:47Now Zanka takes the fake good blocker by the way Zanka and Coder is one of the sneaky
00:03:52running backs around underrated and a pretty good inside runner but no chance there Jethro
00:03:57Pugh was the first big guy to wrap his arms around Doug Coder third down and exactly 10
00:04:03still Giants at the room 30 Goldstein for the long count that might have worked here
00:04:09and the drop rate of Zanka but Ed Jones jumped off sides and could not get back it'll be

00:06:08we'll take a look at that offense which has been sort of rebuilt

00:06:19right guard John Fitzgerald still the center Herbert Scott and Ralph Neely the veteran left
00:06:24tackle those are the receivers Richard Pearson Dupree Novak Stolbach Preston Pearson and Robert
00:06:30Newhouse first down Dallas first and 10 ball is at their own 27 yard line Dupree came in motion
00:06:39the pitch back is the new house new house still on his feet for about a new house all the way
00:06:45out to the 35 at that time they ran right at Jeter the big rookie from the USC number 70 to
00:06:52the bottom of your screen and they'll straighten him up Donovan is a very good offensive tackle
00:06:56once they got the defense he then moving back here he comes back into help on the play
00:07:01but Newhouse again can hide behind his own blockers and it's not hard to seek him out

00:07:49down Dallas somebody's going to go in motion they're not going to run from that formation
00:07:53you know it's true too that's Preston Pearson and Brad Van Pelt is the first guy to make
00:07:59contact and he closed in a hurry he is really a load of course oh there's Tom Landry by the
00:08:06way sitting in Bush Johnson with the play we watched Landry last week under crying conditions
00:08:11in their in their tough game with the Minnesota Vikings and I'll be darned if I saw any change
00:08:15in expression on Tom Landry whether they were ahead or behind or almost losing it even when
00:08:19Stolbach went in on the plunge on overtime and won it there was still no change of course there
00:08:24was no change on the face of Bud Grant either second and seven for Dallas and Stolbach fakes
00:08:31to draw a new house throws debris at it and lost it Clyde Powers was the defender
00:08:40super play they almost had solo coverage that's just a tight end on a square outside maneuver
00:08:45and there's nobody to get help from when you're solo and Powers has always been pretty good at
00:08:49the solo type coverage so it'll be third and seven for Dallas they beat Minnesota last week
00:08:57in overtime 16-10 and the Giants upset Washington 20 to 17.
00:09:04Let's see if the Giants have a little bit of a pass rush that might have an indication for
00:09:07us as to what the game's going to boil down to Stolbach now operating from the shotgun

00:09:19here comes Archer and down goes Stolbach Troy Archer who doesn't know how good he can be

00:11:24think but it's not a game breaker to the outside and they know where Zanka can work and that's
00:11:28for the left side of the formation and it looks to me like then D.D. Lewis almost tackled Zanka
00:11:33because he took the handoff second down to nine Goldstein the quarterback Coder and Zanka the

00:17:43and watch the recovery now by Bryant heck of an effort in the secondary

00:18:08interesting story on Mendenhall he arrived a little bit late he did not make the team playing
00:18:13and McVay and people were worried about whether you know John was in the right mental attitude
00:18:18to play but he made a great stop there so it looks like 64 has got it together well there
00:18:21was a little altercation during the week between Mendenhall and Dan Lloyd part of the game isn't
00:18:28it. The games are on Sunday. Second down situation has Pearson under the secondary
00:18:36of a four yard line stopped by Bryant Kelly but there as we told you in our opening comment
00:18:42is the reason you have not heard too much of Tony Dorsett. Watch Carson number 53 now Scott
00:18:48puts a heck of a block on a number 68 and just buries him and Pearson just seems to grease the
00:18:53hole. It doesn't have to be big just be there. He bounced to about the four they put the ball

00:19:29seems like a great young player that's just waiting for his chance. I see no impatience

00:23:31let's see. Doesn't sound like. Sounds like it's very popular with the Dallas fans.

00:23:50Jennings that's right. Jennings can kick the football though and that is so important these
00:23:55days especially with a young offensive team like that. And now Jennings about five yards deeper in
00:24:00his own end zone. Off and gets it off high and to the right. Johnson feels that the 40 inside
00:24:10the 35 down to the 32. He took it in full stride.
00:24:15That punch took off from Jennings foot like it was going to be better than it turned out to be.
00:24:20Brian Kelly is the guy who made the tackle. So with three minutes

00:25:08Troy Archer I believe got a big ball up and knocked it down. He and Jeter both had their
00:25:12arms up again. That is a young defensive line other than of course Mendenhall and Gregory.
00:25:17But those other two people Jeter and Archer you're going to be reading a lot about them
00:25:21and hearing about them a long time. They're young and they're healthy.

00:25:30first quarter still. Washington over Atlanta three nothing still in the first. Baltimore 14
00:25:35the Jets nothing. And that's in the first. Second and 10 Pearson gets the call and look at him pop

00:25:59start on defense you've got to make sure everybody makes it to the designated area or you're really

00:26:14situation outside Pearson Bobby Bryant. We watched Roger Starbuck last week against Minnesota and
00:26:31even though he was 60 percent until the last driver so it didn't look like he threw it well
00:26:36this pass was thrown well of course third and two it's a good call. I'll tell you Bryant kept
00:26:41slippery there from going right down the sideline. Pearson made it look like he was
00:26:44going to step out and then try to duck it. I said Bobby Bryant it's Billy Bryant.
00:26:56And it's back to Newhouse. He shut that one off pretty well.
00:27:01Peters and Troy Archer. You realize that the big change in the giant system that they took over
00:27:09last year has been the defense. They're allowing people about an average over the last eight games
00:27:14three seven last year and one this year about 12 points a game allowed and they're not making at
00:27:19least the crucial mistake on defense and they really tighten that part of the game up. Peter
00:27:23just beat that block by Donovan. Second and eight. Pearson goes to the left.
