04:26While the offense scored with seeming ease, the defense was simply devastating.
04:31After two weeks, the Dallas Cowboys had scored 91 points and looked unbeatable.

04:40In Philadelphia, the Cowboys ran well, passed well, and played defense well.
04:45That left next to nothing for the Eagles to do, and that's just what they did.

04:51For the second straight week, the hapless Philadelphia Eagles
04:54suffered another humiliating defeat.
04:58Against the Dallas Cowboys, the Eagles' only stick-out player
05:01was safety Bill Bradley, number 28, who intercepted two passes.

05:10Bradley is a free spirit whose abundant talent is laced with a strong dose

06:36is number 22, Bob Hayes.

06:42At times, the Cowboys scored so easily it looked like a dummy drill
06:46on a practice field.

06:50Quarterback Craig Morton's command of Dallas' multiple offense
06:53gave setbacks like Walt Garrison, number 32, clear avenues to the end zone.

07:02But the real heroes for Dallas were the 11 men that comprised
07:05the doomsday defense.
07:07They made the Eagles pay dearly for the meager 32 yards they gained rushing.

07:14Their awesome rush rattled quarterback Pete Lisk, number 14, so much
07:18that he threw and ducked all in one embarrassing motion.
07:21♪♪
07:25This blend of unrelenting pressure forced Lisk and his sub, Rick Harrington,
07:29to throw seven interceptions, three of which were stolen by Herb Adderley,
07:33a cornerback considered washed up by Green Bay two seasons ago.
07:37The doomsday defense even scored a touchdown when end Larry Cole,
07:41number 63, rode over his blocker and jolted the ball from Pete Lisk
07:45into the eager hands of Bob Lilly, who majestically strode for six points.
07:50For the Cowboys, it was a satisfying 42-7 victory.
07:54For the Eagles, it was another depressing trip to oblivion.

08:00The season's third week saw the Cowboys' myth of invincibility shattered
08:04by the undefeated Washington Redskins, who ran away with a 20-16 victory.

08:13Monday night beckoned a huge national audience, eagerly awaiting a blistering
08:17display by this super team from Dallas.
08:20What they saw was less than awesome, as the Cowboys eked out a lackluster
08:2420-13 win over the New York Giants.

08:35...for a touchdown. Great speed. We're underway.

10:03This young man is apparently fired up for a very great many reasons, many of them personal,
10:09many of them confusing and not understood by these reporters and by the American public.
10:14But he is a very great football player, and we'll watch him at every opportunity tonight.

17:59he's just reversing his field totally on his own decision. Again I think it's
18:04another good decision. Bobby's not the biggest guy in the world. He knows his
18:07biggest asset at this club is stay healthy. He's trying to tightrope that thing down

20:48The Cowboys offense continues to be an enigma Tom.
20:51Enigma. If that's a one cell protozoic creature
20:53then it certainly describes the Dallas attack against the Saints last week.
20:58In New Orleans everyone drooled at the prospect of getting well
21:01against a Dallas team seemingly bent on self-destruction.
21:07But Archie Manning found out early that the Cowboys feast on rookie meat.
21:22While Manning felt the force of the doomsday defense
21:25receiver Dan Abramowitz number 46
21:28found out just how powerful national television is.
21:43But the young St. Tufts gave as well as they got
21:46and the Dallas Colossus began to crumble.
21:52The defense forced six Cowboy turnovers.
21:55The most spectacular coming on Dallas Howell's 60-yard return of an interception.
22:14Manning's scrambling style of generalship eroded the Cowboys ability to pursue
22:18and enabled him to combine with Tony Baker for the Saints first score.
22:36The Saints turned around the game for good in the second quarter
22:39when Al Dodd returned Mike Clark's missed field goal 77 yards.
22:48Only Dodd's sheer exhaustion spared the Cowboys.
22:52But just two plays later Archie Manning turned an apparent loss
22:55into another Saint touchdown and a 17-0 halftime lead.

23:28Reserve quarterback Roger Staubach produced two second half touchdowns for Dallas.

23:40The other came on a sideline shot to Bob Hayes that narrowed the Saint lead to a
23:44mere three points, 17-14.
23:52But on this Sunday, the Plucky Saints were not to be denied. Another touchdown
23:56on a rollout by the boy wonder from Mississippi ensured New Orleans' second
24:00stunning upset of the year, 24-14. And for Dallas, it may well be the beginning of
24:06the end.
24:11After 11 years, Dallas said farewell to the Cotton Bowl and began a new era at
24:15Texas Stadium. The Cowboys record stood at 3-2, and the New England
24:20Patriots were burned at the home warming.
24:29From the sudden surges of Walt Garrison to the liquid grace of Dwayne Thomas,
24:34Dallas used a dazzling array of runners to bludgeon the Patriots.
24:52Dallas mustered a convincing 44-21 victory, and their clumsy trip to Super
24:57Bowl VI was rerouted again.
25:00We'll have more exciting action on this week in pro football right after this
25:03brief message. For the New England Patriots, the Dallas Cowboys' new
25:08pleasure palace became a house of usher, full of familiar horrors and old ghosts
25:12from their football past.
25:15And Dallas' Texas Stadium became pro football's newest home, and 65,000 Texans
25:20came to see if their Cowboys could correct their erratic path to a championship.
25:26Dallas stood two games behind the Redskins, and a loss today against the New
25:30England Patriots would drown a season that began with bright promise.
25:38On Sunday, Dallas used Walt Garrison, number 32, to chew up the soft underbelly
25:43of the Patriots' defense.
25:47Then they sent Dwayne Thomas coursing around the Patriot flanks, and he cut a
25:51jagged path to daylight.
26:05While Thomas' 56-yard touchdown provided the impetus, Roger Staubach, number 12,
26:11might have won a permanent job today, and jumped off Tom Landry's merry-go-round
26:15at quarterback.
26:21While their offense was computer precise, the defense was mountain man rough and
26:25tumble.
26:32The doomsday defense punctured Jim Plunkett's protective pocket, and in a foot
26:36race, he was no match for the mountain man.
26:40Thirteen years in the NFL have hardened linebacker Chuck Howley's body, but they
26:44have also softened his hands, and a turnover makes him run on rookie legs.
26:56A taste of running, a touch of defense, spiced with Bob Hayes, blended nicely into
27:00a homemade treat for Dallas fans.
27:05Hayes' first touchdown was a tribute to his speed.
27:09His second showcased his surprisingly soft hands, and turned the game into a
27:13laugher for the Cowboys.
27:26Dallas won the first half 34-7, but the second half was dominated by Jim Plunkett,
27:31and the splendor of his mighty right arm.
27:35The rookie general threw for two scores.
27:37The first came on a conventional bomb to Rabbit Vataha.
27:45On the second, Plunkett used just his wrist to flick a bullet to Tom Beer in the
27:49end zone.
27:57While Plunkett was the NFL's number one rookie pick, number 36 Joe Williams was
28:02Dallas' 12th selection, and his one-man show accounted for the sole Cowboy
28:06touchdown in the second half.
28:12The 44-21 victory not only was a nice initiation for Texas Stadium, but it left
28:17the Cowboys only one game off the pace in the NFC's Eastern Division.
28:25Last year, Dallas was in a similar position, Tom, yet they came back to win
28:28their division and the NFC Championship.
28:31Like last year, Landry is again calling the plays, but now he has two quarterbacks
28:35in a team which is two games out of first place and drowning in its own
28:39mistakes.
28:41In Chicago, Roger Staubach, number 12, and Craig Morton, number 14, were two
28:45quarterbacks on the merry-go-round operated by head coach Tom Landry.
28:50On Sunday, Landry called every play by shuttling in and out his revolving
28:55quarterbacks.
28:59This alien strategy worked to perfection on Dallas' first possession.
29:04Mixing in the receiving of Lance Allworth, number 19, and the rough house
29:08running of Dwayne Thomas, the Cowboys' prodigal son, Dallas took a 7-0 lead.
29:21The Bears use only one quarterback, Bobby Douglas, because everyone else is hurt.
29:27Douglas' talents are as yet undeveloped, but he is endowed with a cannon-strong
29:31arm and the body of a tight end.
29:35His nine-yard scramble for a touchdown evened the score at 7-7 in the first
29:39quarter.
29:49Maybe the quarterbacks were not in shape to run those 40 yards through the huddle
29:53on every play, but somehow the merry-go-round began to spin the wrong way.
30:03Suddenly, Cowboys' setbacks were grist for the Big Bad Bears' defensive
30:07mixmaster.
30:19Suddenly, wide-open Dallas receivers became defensive backs as four
30:23interceptions turned the game's flow back to the Bears.
30:37Trailing 13-7, Dallas' doomsday defense towed out and poured over the Bears'
30:42boy quarterback.
30:47Their pressure caused a fumble, and their presence caused a bad snap that they
30:52converted into a two-point safety.
31:10Ahead 16-12 in the last period, Douglas' pump fake froze defensive back Mel
31:16Renfrow, number 20, long enough to allow Dick Gordon an unmolested path to a
31:20touchdown.
31:24The point after proved as dramatic as the score when Douglas turned another bad
31:28exchange into an unusual extra point.
31:32Bears 23, Cowboys 12.
31:39With just over three minutes left in the game, Craig Morton found Gloucester
31:43Richardson floating free behind the secondary.
31:49And now the margin was a mere four points, 23-19.
31:53With two minutes remaining, the Cowboys forced the Bears to punt.
31:58There would be plenty of time to score again.
32:02Cliff Harris tried to find the sideline but found only Bears and he fumbled.
32:08Thunderstruck, the Cowboys had lost their third game while head coach Jim Dooley
32:12and his Cinderella Bears remained just one game behind Minnesota in the NFC
32:16Central.
32:17Week seven brought the Chicago Bears, who seemed to cash in the Cowboys' last hand
32:22in the NFC East.
32:28Chicago hit hard while Dallas did not.
32:31While Bobby Douglas, the untamed big blonde quarterback, made every big play,
32:36Dallas made none.
32:59The 23-19 loss left Dallas with a dismal 4-3 record.
33:05Roger Staubach replaced Craig Morton.
33:09Against the Cardinals, Staubach's unscheduled flights left defenders dizzy as Dallas came
33:14from behind to win, 16-13.
33:31Sovereign defense blended with a conservative offense combined to defeat the Eagles as Dallas

33:57With two heavyweights, they slugged it out for 60 minutes.

34:47Finally, the war of nerves was settled by Staubach, who led the Cowboys on a furious

35:48Douglas rams, and Dallas ran on the rookie legs of Isaac Thomas.
36:08Thomas' 89-yard touchdown provided the margin of victory as the Cowboys swept to their
