00:00:30This is the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas, as viewed from overhead by the Goodyear Blimp,
00:01:00Tonight, it's the New York Giants and the Dallas Cowboys, perfect weather for football,
00:01:04both these clubs battling to stay close to the undefeated Washington Redskins.
00:01:08And NFL Monday Night Football is brought to you by Firestone, the name that's known as
00:01:14Firestone, where the rubber meets the road.
00:01:17And by Ford, who invites you to see all the 72 better ideas at your Ford dealers.
00:01:23Over 60,000 people here in the Cotton Bowl tonight to see the Giants against the Dallas
00:01:35Cowboys.
00:01:36Hello again everyone, I'm Howard Cosell, welcome to another Monday Night of NFL Football, and
00:01:41tonight the atmosphere is as tense in this booth as it is on the gridiron.
00:01:46We have coming to vocal grips the ex-Giant Frank Gifford and the ex-Cowboy Don Meredith,
00:01:52hopefully I shall serve as a provocative catalyst during the course of the evening.
00:01:56And hopefully too, we've got a great matchup, equivalent to that here in the booth, on the
00:02:01gridiron.
00:02:02The Giants at 2 and 1, surprisingly, against the Cowboys at 2 and 1, as each team chases
00:02:08the division-leading Washington Redskins in the Eastern Division of the National Football
00:02:13Conference.
00:02:14And we've got another feature coming up for you tonight that should be interesting, the
00:02:18possible first appearance of number 33.
00:02:21Dwayne Thomas just activated the great back of a year ago who helped lead the Cowboys
00:02:27to the Super Bowl.
00:02:28But why talk more?
00:02:29Let's analyze the Cowboys through the voice and knowledgeability, immense as it is, of
00:02:35the great one of yesteryear, number 17, Don Meredith.
00:02:40Thank you, Howard.
00:02:42Let's do hope that we don't let the activities of this booth overshadow the activities of
00:02:46the Cotton Bowl, because we are here to bring you a very good football game.
00:02:50Contrary to what Howard mentioned, I don't really know that much about the Cowboys, except
00:02:54I was there for nine years.
00:02:55They've changed a great deal.
00:02:57The team has always been highlighted by multiple offensive formations and coordinated defenses.
00:03:01The first fellow we're going to show you tonight is not the starting quarterback, and that
00:03:06is Craig Martin, number 14.
00:03:08Roger Staubach is scheduled to start.
00:03:11Craig Martin was with the Dallas Cowboys when I was here.
00:03:14Roger Staubach was not.
00:03:15He's a young fellow from Navy.
00:03:17Craig played his college ability out in California.
00:03:21I don't know.
00:03:22They've had some trouble with deciding which one is going to be number one.
00:03:25Roger's going to start out tonight.
00:03:26Both boys are very capable.
00:03:27One thing that is sure, they have a great guy in the backfield to give it to that can run,
00:03:31and that's number 35, Calvin Hill.
00:03:33Calvin is from Yale, and he's a heck of a runner.
00:03:36Calvin can go outside.
00:03:37I think we'll see the Cowboys try to exploit his speed and the versatility that Calvin Hill
00:03:41does have.
00:03:42He may even throw a play pass tonight.
00:03:44Let's be looking for all of it.
00:03:45Now we'll hear what Frank's got to say about those wonderful New York Giants.
00:03:49Come on, Frank.
00:03:50Well, I don't know either.
00:03:51I only spent 12 years there with the Giants.
00:03:54We'll try and get along.
00:03:55The Giants, I think, are in a lot of trouble this evening.
00:03:58Many people probably do not know that Ron Johnson, their great running back of last
00:04:02year that gained over 1,000 yards, will not play.
00:04:04He was placed on the move list very late this afternoon.
00:04:07He's been replaced on the roster by a rookie out of the University of Southern California,
00:04:11Charlie Evans.
00:04:12Ron Johnson will be out for at least two weeks.
00:04:14If the Giants win tonight, it'll be because they will get a great performance from their
00:04:18quarterback, Fran Tarkenton.
00:04:20And Fran Tarkenton has had many great performances over the years against the Dallas Cowboys.
00:04:24He's the kind of quarterback that, scrambling it around, can really confuse the state, if
00:04:28I can use that word, Dallas defense.
00:04:30They're a keying defense.
00:04:31When you get that quarterback out of the pocket, they get into a lot of trouble.
00:04:35They also have a great playbreaker in their number one draft pick, Rocky Thompson.
00:04:40From West Texas State, Rocky Thompson, who last week, against the St. Louis Cardinals
00:04:44in a 21-20 win by the Giants, went 93 yards for a touchdown.
00:04:50It was a great effort.
00:04:51He did it earlier against New England in the preseason, and he has blinding speed.
00:04:55Let's take a look at it.
00:04:56Jim Bakken kicking off for the St. Louis Cardinals.
00:04:59The Giants, at this point, trailing and in trouble.
00:05:01Thompson takes it at the 7.
00:05:03Watch the block of Dick Cotite, number 87.
00:05:06Right there.
00:05:08He springs Thompson, and it's all over.
00:05:12Rocky Thompson, who will be receiving the kick tonight for the Giants, is the kind of
00:05:16man who can get them off to a good start.
00:05:18And we'll be ready for tonight's kickoff in just a moment.
00:05:26Unfortunately, your new 1972 winter is almost ready for delivery.
00:05:31Fortunately, a new Firestone tire that will change the way you feel about winter driving
00:05:35is ready for delivery now.
00:05:38Firestone stops you cold.
00:05:40Starts you cold.
00:05:41Helps you steer your way through winter weather.
00:05:44New Firestone asymmetrical town and country tires.
00:05:48The winter tire with three separate treads.
00:05:51An open traction section to help you start or stop.
00:05:54Center Z-bars for stability and mileage.
00:05:56A stable traction section to help your steering control.
00:06:00Adding up to a wide tread that holds a third more ice-gripping studs than any tire we've
00:06:04made before.
00:06:06These new tires are designed for front wheels, too.
00:06:08To give you even more steering and stopping control on ice.
00:06:12Winter always has a few surprises for you.
00:06:15This year, get Firestone asymmetrical town and country tires from your Firestone dealer
00:06:19or store, and you'll have a few surprises for winter.
00:06:26My wife says I can only have one beer.
00:06:29And this is it.
00:06:32There's a big beer brotherhood of hams.
00:06:37You're on to something good with hams.
00:06:43Ham, tap and regular.
00:06:45Brewed for natural drinkability.
00:06:47Nothing artificial.
00:06:48There's always room for another ham.
00:06:50The big beer drinking brotherhood of hams.
00:07:03I'm Roger Staubach of the Dallas Cowboys.
00:07:14Sometimes there's no place to hide.
00:07:16Make sure you don't try to hide behind a curtain of drugs.
00:07:20Again, from overhead, the Goodyear Blimp, giving us a fine view of the Cotton Bowl in
00:07:32Dallas, Texas.
00:07:33The New York Giants and the Dallas Cowboys.
00:07:36Getting ready to kick off is Mike Clark of the Dallas Cowboys, the Giants having won
00:07:40the toss.
00:07:41And going deep for the New York Giants will be number 28, Bobby Duhan, and number 22,
00:07:46Rocky Thompson.
00:07:47The speedster, the number one draft pick of the New York Giants from West Texas State.
00:07:51Keep in mind, as we mentioned moments ago, that last week, Rocky Thompson carried one
00:07:55back against the Cardinals, 93 yards for a touchdown.
00:07:59Great speed.
00:08:00We're underway.
00:08:01The ball going deep to the goal line where Thompson will take it at about the 4.
00:08:10Thompson over the 35 to about the 37, still spinning.
00:08:13Fumble on the play.
00:08:16Plaxton Welch at the bottom of the pile.
00:08:18Plaxton Welch, number 42, has picked off Rocky Thompson's fumble on the very opening play.
00:08:29Well, it's a way to start one, Frank.
00:08:31Looked like Thompson had this one broken for a good game.
00:08:34He had good blocking.
00:08:35Let's see who hits him in there.
00:08:36A couple of guys.
00:08:37That was Plaxton Welch, number 42, came in and picked it up.
00:08:40That was too loose.
00:08:41The Cowboys got a big break.
00:08:43That they do.
00:08:44First and 10 on the Giants' 40-yard line.
00:08:46Roger Staub back to quarterback.
00:08:48Lance Allworth comes left.
00:08:50He's number 19.
00:08:51Bobby Hayes, the speedster, is in the slot, number 22.
00:08:55Calvin Hill moves to the flank, and this is Garrison around the right side.
00:08:58Garrison breaking across the 40 and close to out of bounds at the 39-yard line.
00:09:03And we will set that offensive backfield.
00:09:05Calvin Hill, number 35, is at fullback.
00:09:07Walt Garrison, 32, the halfback.
00:09:10Lance Allworth is starting for the first time.
00:09:12Obtained from San Diego in a trade.
00:09:14One of the great receivers of all time in pro football.
00:09:16He's number 19.
00:09:17Bob Hayes, number 22, is the split end.
00:09:2087, Billy Truex, another shakeup by Tom Landry.
00:09:23We'll start at tight end.
00:09:25Billy Truex, obtained from the Los Angeles Rams.
00:09:27And this is the man on the spot, Roger Staub back.
00:09:296'3", 197 pounds, a former Heisman Award winner.
00:09:33Now in his third year with the Cowboys.
00:09:35Second down, 9 yards.
00:09:40Roger Staub back looking to pass.
00:09:43Gets one off deep.
00:09:45Overthrowing Bobby Hayes.
00:09:48Roger Staub back looking downfield.
00:09:51Carl Lockhart back attempting to cover Bob Hayes.
00:09:56In that offensive line for Roger Staub back.
00:09:59A right tackle, number 70, Rayfield Wright.
00:10:01Blaine Nye, a fine veteran guard, is at the right position, 61.
00:10:07We have a flag down at the line of scrimmage.
00:10:10The options being discussed.
00:10:12Carl Lockhart, the acting captain for the Giants.
00:10:15This is Tommy Bell, our referee.
00:10:22That's the big one.
00:10:25The official indication of pushing against the Cowboys.
00:10:32That will give Roger Staub back.
00:10:34His second down and 24 at left guard
00:10:36as we continue across that offensive line.
00:10:38John Nyland, number 76, Ralph Neely.
00:10:41Number 73 is the left tackle.
00:10:43In the center, Dave Manders, number 51.
00:10:46Second down and 24.
00:10:47Coming left, both speedy receivers.
00:10:49Lance Allworth wide to the left.
00:10:51Bob Hayes in the slot.
00:10:53Billy Truex, the tight end, splits out right.
00:10:55The Cowboys shift.
00:10:57And we'll see a lot of that this evening.
00:10:59The fake draw, the fist goes to Calvin Hill
00:11:02and he fumbles a football.
00:11:03I believe that was lateral.
00:11:08They haven't looked real sharp so far.
00:11:10Looked nervous.
00:11:13Calvin Hill bobbling that football.
00:11:16And it was ruled a lateral.
00:11:19A loss of about two yards.
00:11:22Third down now and make it 25.
00:11:26Defensively in the secondary for the Giants.
00:11:28At the left corner is Athens, 45.
00:11:31Joe Greene, the tight safety, 33.
00:11:33Carl Lockhart, the free safety, 43.
00:11:35Willie Williams, the right cornerback.
00:11:36He's number 41.
00:11:38Again, both wide Dallas receivers come to the left.
00:11:41Both speedy wide receivers.
00:11:43You see Hayes in the slot.
00:11:45Up wide, Lance Allworth.
00:11:49Sawback again going deep.
00:11:51Almost picked off by Joe Greene at the 20-yard line.
00:11:58Joe Greene coming over from his tight safety position
00:12:00which will give you an indication that the Giants
00:12:02are going to try and attempt to get double coverage
00:12:05on those two speedy receivers.
00:12:08Sawback comes to the sidelines.
00:12:09The Cowboys will have to punt.
00:12:12Ron Whitby will come in, number 10.
00:12:16Dropping deep for the Giants, number 43, Carl Lockhart.
00:12:19As we look at head coach Tom Landry
00:12:21conferring with his quarterback, Roger Sawback.
00:12:24Also deep with Carl Lockhart, number 28, Bobby Duhon.
00:12:34Fine kick.
00:12:40Great effort by Charlie Waters.
00:12:43Wow.
00:12:49But it will be the touchback.
00:12:51Timeout.
00:12:52The score is the Giants nothing, the Cowboys nothing.
00:12:58♪♪
00:13:06You said you wanted to uncomplicate your life.
00:13:08Remember?
00:13:09Start now with the Schick Injector System.
00:13:13We designed it for better balance so it's more maneuverable,
00:13:16easier to control because we believe a good clean shave
00:13:20should be a simple, natural act.
00:13:23Schick Injector System.
00:13:25Simplify.
00:13:28You might not recognize me because I put on a few pounds,
00:13:31but I'm the mouth that ran up the clock.
00:13:33Here's why I stopped running.
00:13:34One o'clock.
00:13:36Panasonic's talking clock radio.
00:13:38Touch it and it tells you the time in words.
00:13:40One o'clock.
00:13:42Panasonic makes a lot of radios in crazy shapes and colors,
00:13:45some with cassette recorders,
00:13:47radios that put you in the center of an orchestra.
00:13:49But this one's my favorite.
00:13:51Hickory dickory.
00:13:52One o'clock.
00:13:53Panasonic, just slightly ahead of our time.
00:13:57On the sidelines, head coach Alex Webster of the New York Giants
00:14:00looks on as his Giants take over first and ten on the 20-yard line,
00:14:03their own 20, following the touchback.
00:14:06A 53-yard kick by Ron Whitney.
00:14:09And you'll see a lot of shifting and moving around on the part of the Giants.
00:14:12They're going to try and confuse a very strong Dallas defense.
00:14:15Now in the stacked eye.
00:14:17Now with motion.
00:14:18Rich Houston going to the left.
00:14:22In the middle is Coffey, and I believe another fumble.
00:14:27And another cowboy recovery.
00:14:30At the bottom of the pile, number 63, Larry Cole.
00:14:35Well, gentlemen, so far your respective teams are performing a comedy of error.
00:14:43Howard.
00:14:44Howard.
00:14:45Only underway.
00:14:46Howard.
00:14:47Don't forget.
00:14:49At least Frank and I have respective teams.
00:14:54First and ten for the Cowboys.
00:14:55They have the ball on the Giants' 24-yard line.
00:14:57They too shift and move around.
00:14:59All words now into a short swing formation.
00:15:01Now he goes in motion.
00:15:02The toss goes to Calvin Hill.
00:15:04Behind Rayfield right, out to the right.
00:15:07Calvin Hill down to about the 15-yard line, make it the 14.
00:15:10Carl Lockhart coming over to help out with the tackle.
00:15:14Joe Green is there, number 33.
00:15:16And, again, a flag is down.
00:15:18And, Howard, I'm starting to agree with you.
00:15:21It's about time.
00:15:24That's another big one.
00:15:27The Cowboys are going into this game, Frank,
00:15:29with the idea that they've got to control the ball.
00:15:32And I think we'll see a lot of runs.
00:15:34I think we're going to see a lot of sweeps.
00:15:36They expect to get Calvin Hill outside.
00:15:38I hope we don't see a lot of the infractions by both teams.
00:15:42It just doesn't lend itself to a good ballgame.
00:15:45Second down now in 22 yards.
00:15:47Roger Sawback brings the Cowboys up to the line of scrimmage.
00:15:52Both speedy receivers to the left, Bob Hayes, Lance Allworth.
00:15:55Sawback dropping straight back.
00:15:57And he wants to get on the scoreboard early,
00:15:59and he overthrows Lance Allworth at the goal line.
00:16:05Sawback's passing record in 1970.
00:16:08That defensive line for the Giants, number 71, Bob Lurtz,
00:16:10on the left end, Jerry Shea, 75, the left tackle,
00:16:13Roland Lakes, number 76, the right tackle, Fred Dreyer,
00:16:17number 89, the right defensive end, John Douglas,
00:16:20the former Cowboys, number 51, Jim Files,
00:16:23now in his second year doing a fine job
00:16:25at middle linebacker for the Giants, number 58.
00:16:27Ralph Heck is on the left side.
00:16:29He's 55.
00:16:33Sawback 0 for 4.
00:16:36Second down, 22, Fran Tarkenton on the sidelines,
00:16:39looking on.
00:16:41Last year, the Cowboys and the Giants split.
00:16:44The Cowboys winning the first one, 28 to 10.
00:16:47The Giants winning the second, 23 to 20.
00:16:50Second and long yardage.
00:16:55Lance Allworth in motion.
00:17:00Calvin Hill.
00:17:01Calvin Hill hit hard by Ralph Heck, 55.
00:17:04Roland Lakes is over, number 76.
00:17:13I don't give us time to tell you that our telecast is presented
00:17:15by authority of the Dallas Cowboys Football Club.
00:17:18It's intended for the private use of our audience.
00:17:20Any rebroadcast or other use of this telecast
00:17:22without the express written consent of the Dallas Cowboys Football Club
00:17:26and the National Football League is prohibited.
00:17:28Third down and 22.
00:17:30Don, you've seen a lot of these.
00:17:31You bet.
00:17:33I think you'll try the pattern that he called a while ago.
00:17:35We'll see Allworth come back across the middle,
00:17:37what they call a wing-in pattern.
00:17:41Sawback looking down, looking for Allworth across the middle.
00:17:47Don, you were right on.
00:17:48Allworth wasn't.
00:17:49Drops the ball at the 14-yard line.
00:17:51Lance Allworth, as I mentioned before,
00:17:53one of the truly great receivers of all time.
00:17:56We'll watch it again.
00:17:57Allworth, as you know, has injured ribs.
00:17:59This is his first time to be back in there.
00:18:00Let's see if this affects his jump.
00:18:02That bucket was in there.
00:18:03He came back across the middle.
00:18:05That one was in there.
00:18:06It should have been caught.
00:18:07It was a good throw by Roger.
00:18:09Bobby Hayes on that pattern is the clear-out man.
00:18:12He's in between where Allworth is and the tackle,
00:18:14and he goes right straight down to clear it out.
00:18:16There was a good hole in there.
00:18:17He'll try a field goal.
00:18:18And to attempt a field goal, Mike Clark, number 83, comes on.
00:18:21As we watch from the end zone, Danny Reeves holding at the 42-yard line.
00:18:26It's up.
00:18:28And it just clears the crossbar.
00:18:30The Cowboys on the scoreboard.
00:18:3342-yard field goal, Mike Clark.
00:18:36In NFL Monday Night Football,
00:18:38the New York Giants versus the Dallas Cowboys continues from the Cotton Bowl.
00:18:42With the score, the Cowboys 3, the Giants nothing.

00:19:43Quiet plus.
00:19:44Another better idea from Ford.
00:19:48Eleven minutes and 43 seconds remain in the first period
00:19:51from the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas.
00:19:52Mike Clark, whom you are just now looking at,
00:19:55has just kicked a 42-yard field goal.
00:19:57The Cowboys up front, 3 to nothing.
00:19:59Deep is Rocky Thompson.
00:20:01Inside the end zone, ahead of Rocky Thompson, is Bobby Duhan.
00:20:08Another high kick, which Thompson will field in the end zone,
00:20:10and he'll run it out.
00:20:15Rocky Thompson back to the 15-yard line.
00:20:19Dwayne Thomas down to make the tackle, number 33,
00:20:22who's just been activated, as Howard mentioned,
00:20:24at the top of our telecast.
00:20:26Well, now let's see what the Giants can do offensively.
00:20:29You're looking at Dwayne Thomas now, of course,
00:20:32as he seeks to get in there and make the tackle.
00:20:35This young man is apparently fired up for a very great many reasons,
00:20:38many of them personal, many of them confusing and not understood
00:20:42by these reporters and by the American public.
00:20:45But he is a very great football player,
00:20:47and we'll watch him at every opportunity tonight.
00:20:49And his effort puts the Giants on their own 14-yard line.
00:20:53Joe Morrison is in a one-setback.
00:20:55Tarkenton sprinting out, looking for Morrison.
00:20:58He has him.
00:21:00And did he have control of the football?
00:21:02Officials rule that he did.
00:21:04At the 25-yard line, Tarkenton to Morrison.
00:21:07And I think we'll see a lot of that this evening.
00:21:09Tarkenton, knowing that he will get pressure from a great defensive
00:21:12front forward, George Andre, 66.
00:21:15The right defensive end, Bob Lilly, 74.
00:21:17One of the truly great tacklers of all time at right tackle,
00:21:20Jethro Pugh, 75.
00:21:21Larry Cole is the defensive left end, 63.
00:21:24There is your measurement.
00:21:26First down, New York.
00:21:28I think there's another reason, Frank, we'll see Fran roll out.
00:21:31You mentioned some very good ones.
00:21:33Another one is Dallas being a coordinated type team on defense
00:21:37is geared for a drop-back type pass.
00:21:40They function, they key off of a drop-back pass.
00:21:42When you're on a roll-out, a lot of things can happen.
00:21:44Tarkenton is a man that can make a decision very quickly,
00:21:47either run or throw.
00:21:48That puts added pressure in a centralized or localized spot
00:21:51from that defense.
00:21:53Clip to McNeil.
00:21:55The wide end goes to the left.
00:21:57Joe Morrison, junior, copies the setbacks.
00:21:59Now Rich Houston, the flanker, goes in motion.
00:22:01This to Rich Houston.
00:22:03Mel Renfrow trying for the tacklers.
00:22:05Houston moves up to the 30-yard line.
00:22:08Great speed on the part of Houston.
00:22:11I'd like to make the point, too, Frank,
00:22:13that we're going to see some very wild things tried by the Giants
00:22:16on the offense tonight, things you won't believe.
00:22:19Scrambles of a whole new type that Frank will depict as they take place.
00:22:24I will try.
00:22:26This team is obviously making concessions to itself
00:22:29in the face of the fact that they are without Ron Johnson
00:22:32and also without Tucker Fredrickson, who's on the move list.
00:22:36All right, second down and five for Tarkenton.
00:22:38He has his stacked eye.
00:22:40Junior copies directly behind.
00:22:42Joe Morrison.
00:22:43Now Rich Houston goes to the left in motion.
00:22:45This is copied.
00:22:46Copied.
00:22:47Met at the line of scrimmage.
00:22:48Hard.
00:22:49Number 74, Bob Lilly, is there.
00:22:51Chuck Howley's there, 54.
00:22:54George Andre, 66.
00:22:56In that secondary for the Dallas Cowboys, Mel Renfrow, number 20,
00:22:59is the right cornerback.
00:23:00Cliff Harris has opened at the free safety.
00:23:03Cornell Green, number 34, is the tight safety.
00:23:0626, Herb Adderley, the 10-year veteran, is at the left corner.
00:23:10Cliff Harris, number 43, is in there in place of number 41,
00:23:13Charlie Waters, who many feel was the culprit on the touchdown pass
00:23:18to Roy Jefferson a week ago that broke open the game for Washington.
00:23:23Now on third and three, out to the left is McNeil.
00:23:26You can call this whatever you want.
00:23:27It's funny.
00:23:30Great drop back.
00:23:32Over the middle to Bob Tucker.
00:23:34Tucker just short of the 40-yard line.
00:23:38Bob Tucker, number 38, the tight end.
00:23:40Watch for that all game long.
00:23:42Fran likes to throw to Bob Tucker a very unheralded
00:23:46and under-publicized tight end, number 38, on key third-down situations.
00:23:51We saw the Cowboys blitz on that last play, too.
00:23:53I wouldn't be surprised if they don't do more of that tonight.
00:23:56The Cowboys blitz against certain formations rather than down situations.
00:24:00If we see a lot of unusual formations and motions,
00:24:03I'm sure we'll see the linebackers coming.
00:24:06First and ten from the 38-yard line, their own 38-yard line.
00:24:09McNeil to the left, Houston to the right.
00:24:10Tarkenton getting in trouble.
00:24:12A flag goes down.
00:24:13The ball goes out to Coffey.
00:24:14He's up over the 43-yard line.
00:24:17A flag is down at the 46-yard line.
00:24:21Dave Edwards there to stop Junior Coffey.
00:24:27A discussion with Fran Tarkenton, the acting captain for the Giants.
00:24:34There seems to be a defensive holding down field, Frank,
00:24:37which is somewhat different from pass interference in that I think they got
00:24:42Edwards for holding the receiver.
00:24:44The ball was not thrown to him, and therefore he didn't interfere with his
00:24:47opportunity to catch the ball, but rather he just interfered with his
00:24:50opportunity to run a pass.
00:24:54But as oftentimes is the case, I could be wrong.
00:24:59Discussion continues.
00:25:00Now Herb Adderley has moved in, number 26.
00:25:06Jeffrey Tommy Bell.
00:25:08The umpires, George Pinard this evening.
00:25:10Our headlinesman, Ray Godin.
00:25:12Our line judge, Royal Cathcart.
00:25:14Our back judge, Tom Kelleher.
00:25:16Our field judge is Chris Graff.
00:25:19This is Tommy Bell.
00:25:29The penalty paced off from the line of scrimmage under the new rule rather
00:25:37than from originally the point of the infraction.
00:25:40Is that what you make of that, John?
00:25:42That's exactly right.
00:25:43From the line of scrimmage, the personal foul marked off against the
00:25:46Dallas Cowboys.
00:25:48All right, the Giants now have a first and ten on the Cowboys.
00:25:5242-yard line.
00:25:53McNeil goes left.
00:25:55Or Houston left.
00:25:56McNeil is right.
00:25:58Tarkenton getting rid of it quickly.
00:25:59McNeil.
00:26:00McNeil with a pickup of about three or four yards.
00:26:04You've got to hand it to Tarkenton.
00:26:06He's maddening to defense.
00:26:08Unlike most scramblers, he somehow manages to retain very frequently
00:26:12command of the downfield.
00:26:14And he's using the quick poppers now to the sidelines.
00:26:17Remember, this drive began at the 14.
00:26:19Remember, the Giants are playing without their two best backs.
00:26:22Remember, they're playing a team generally considered to be
00:26:25by many to have at least one of the two best 40-man squads in football.
00:26:30Tarkenton, four for four, 28 yards, second down and a long three.
00:26:34The ball resting at the 31-yard line.
00:26:37Morrison heading back, moving very close to the first down.
00:26:42George Andre, 66, is there for the tackle.
00:26:44Jet for a few, 75.
00:26:46Nine minutes, 13 seconds remain in the first period.
00:26:50Joe Morrison, now in his 13th year.
00:26:53Joe Morrison, now in his 13th year as a New York Giant.
00:26:57Dallas has always been strong against the run.
00:27:01Pete's going to beat my kick.
00:27:03Wait a minute, fella.
00:27:04Pete Gogolak, thinking about it.
00:27:07Last week against Washington, over 200 yards was gained
00:27:10rushing against the Cowboy defense.
00:27:12This is something that hurts a great deal since the club was actually
00:27:15formed with the idea that defense is what wins championships.
00:27:19You don't win championships by letting the other team rush
00:27:21200-and-something yards against you, and the Giants are running
00:27:24very well so far tonight.
00:27:26Another first and ten for the Giants.
00:27:27They're at the Cowboys' 31-and-a-half-yard line.
00:27:30McNeil goes left.
00:27:33Stacked high.
00:27:34Houston goes in motion to the left.
00:27:37Toss to Morrison, behind Greg Larson.
00:27:40Morrison inside what appears to be the 25-yard line to about the 24.
00:27:47Leroy Jordan moving over.
00:27:49Well, I just want to point out one other thing.
00:27:50Anytime that somebody moves in the backfield, like we've been seeing a lot of
00:27:53motion or divide, what they call when the man in the backfield goes to the
00:27:57weak side, that is a divide move, motion when he goes to the strong side where
00:28:01the tight end or the X-end lines up, the Dallas defense has to make a quick
00:28:05adjustment, and this does cause some problems because they have to do it
00:28:07right at the last second.
00:28:09And Alex Webster, having played with Tom Landry, aware of his coaching
00:28:12philosophy, is moving his backs all over the field.
00:28:16Second down now in three.
00:28:18A quick toss again to McNeil.
00:28:19He can't handle it.
00:28:22McNeil working in front of Adderley.
00:28:24That time you saw Chuck Howley easing out into the flat.
00:28:27Exactly right.
00:28:28It's a good move by Howley.
00:28:29Howley's responsibility is that short, quick outside pattern.
00:28:32It's hard for a defensive back to cover that.
00:28:34And there's old Alex Webster, as you pointed out.
00:28:36He's taking it all in over there.
00:28:37Is that Norm Hecker by him?
00:28:39Joe Walton, the former tight end.
00:28:40There you go.
00:28:43Norm Hecker in the background, the defensive coach.
00:28:46Coach says we look at third and three.
00:28:47We're getting close, Don.
00:28:49What's this we stuff?
00:28:51That's right.
00:28:52All right.
00:28:53Third and three from the 24.
00:28:55McNeil to the right.
00:28:56This back guy.
00:28:57Quick toss to Coffey, and he's met there by Chuck Howley.
00:29:01You won't find a better one.
00:29:04He's as good as there is.
00:29:06There he is.
00:29:07Talk to him, coach.
00:29:08Get him going.
00:29:10Coach will help you out there.
00:29:12Tom Landry looking on.
00:29:14Chuck Howley, a 13-year veteran himself, with the Saffron Junior, Coffey.
00:29:18That'll bring up fourth down.
00:29:20The ball resting at about the 28-yard line.
00:29:23Pete Gogolak has come on.
00:29:26He'll try to tie the football game up.
00:29:29And Parkinson will hold at just past the 35-yard line.
00:29:33Pete Gogolak, who's had problems.
00:29:35He's won for six this year.
00:29:42And it's good.
00:29:43From the 36-yard line, Pete Gogolak hits.
00:29:48And with timeout, the score is the Giants 3, the Cowboys 3.
00:29:55Coming at you.
00:29:56Model motoring sand vans.
00:29:58Dynamite dune buggies from Aurora.
00:30:00Fun cars that are really fun because you really drive them with your sand van joystick.
00:30:09And the action doesn't let up because the power pack plugs right into the wall.
00:30:13Sand vans.
00:30:14The red dune set even comes with lights.
00:30:16Each sand van set comes with two vans, dune track, all power equipment.
00:30:20From the model motoring division of Aurora.
00:30:22We're for real.
00:30:25You take the ball and you place it on the magnet like that.
00:30:27Then you pitch the high hard one.
00:30:29Then you gotta learn how to punch out the clutch hit like that.
00:30:33Let's play.
00:30:38A homer.
00:30:39I got a homer.
00:30:40Take it easy, son.
00:30:41It's only a game.
00:30:43A homer.
00:30:44A homer.
00:30:45Take it easy, Dad.
00:30:46It's only a game.
00:30:47Skittle baseball comes complete with players and scoreboard.
00:30:51From Aurora, where fun is the name of the game.
00:30:55A crowd of over 60,000 here in the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas, has just given this young man an ovation.
00:31:01Dwayne Thomas reactivated this past week.
00:31:07He's anticipating a short kick on the part of Pete Gogolak.
00:31:10Pete Gogolak, who has just tied up this football game with a 35-yard field goal.
00:31:14And he does kick it short.
00:31:18Mike Ditka with the football.
00:31:20Ditka over the 35 to about the 38.
00:31:24The Cowboys will take over.
00:31:25First to 10, Joe Green down to make the tackle.
00:31:28I don't think that was so much an attempt at an onside kick.
00:31:31It was just an attempt to keep the ball away from Cliff Harris and Dwayne Thomas.
00:31:35Two.
00:31:36Fine speedsters for the Dallas Cowboys.
00:31:44On first and 10, Roger Staubach.
00:31:48Pass all the way in the backfield.
00:31:52Now in motion.
00:31:58Walt Garrison.
00:32:03Behind Blaine Nye.
00:32:05The bottom of the pile, Bob Lertzema, number 71.
00:32:08Garrison with a pickup of about 3 1⁄2 to 4 yards.
00:32:17Ball resting on the Cowboys' 43-yard line.
00:32:19Six minutes and nine seconds remain.
00:32:23Looking at Freddie Strickland.
00:32:25Rolling lakes, number 76.
00:32:27The defensive right side of the Giants, 4-3.
00:32:30Out to the left, comes Hallward.
00:32:34But he directs the tight end.
00:32:35Splits at the top of your screen.
00:32:36Bob Hayes drops into the slot.
00:32:40The screen to Garrison.
00:32:43Douglas is there.
00:32:44John Douglas, helped out by rolling lakes.
00:32:47Douglas, number 51, a former Dallas Cowboy.
00:32:50He may have worked on that in practice, Frank, because he played it very well.
00:32:55That was a fake screen to the right.
00:32:58To Calvin Hill, they came back to the left with Garrison.
00:33:04Third down now, third down and eight.
00:33:06We'll make it third down and seven for Roger Staubach.
00:33:09Billy Truax is his tight end, number 87.
00:33:11Lance Allworth is his flanker.
00:33:14Out to the right goes Bob Hayes, number 22.
00:33:16He'll work against Keith Ethis.
00:33:21Cowboys into their own unusual formation.
00:33:23Lance Allworth in motion left.
00:33:27Staubach has Hayes.
00:33:30Ethis is there, but Hayes moves into Giant territory at the 37.
00:33:35Really a good move by Bobby.
00:33:36We watched him take Pete Ethis down.
00:33:37He goes, tries to get up inside of him.
00:33:39He comes back, breaks to the outside.
00:33:41Pete Ethis was also with Dallas at one time, and I'm sure he's seen Bobby run deep.
00:33:45It'll give him plenty of room.
00:33:46That ball was well thrown.
00:33:47Good route by Hayes.
00:33:49He's not going to work on Ethis much of the night, obviously, because of his inexperience,
00:33:53but I think Frank made the critical point earlier.
00:33:56We should be looking for a lot of Giant double coverage on both Hayes and Allworth.
00:34:00It was missing in that case.
00:34:03That's what the Cowboys are trying to do to keep the Giants away from double coverage.
00:34:07That's why they move these men around.
00:34:09Garrison.
00:34:14Number 58, Jim Files, the middle linebacker for the Giants.
00:34:18And this is what I sort of anticipated the Cowboys would come out with in the first place.
00:34:22I did too.
00:34:23I feel that last week Coach Landry was not pleased with his entire play of the offense or the defense,
00:34:29and he has emphasized all week we're going to go right at him.
00:34:32We're going to learn to block, go back to tackling.
00:34:34I've heard him say it before.
00:34:35Let's get back to the basics.
00:34:37Second down, a long five.
00:34:40The quick pop attempt to number 87, Billy Truex.
00:34:44Jim Files makes a stop, and Tom Landry doesn't like that.
00:34:48Look at Tommy.
00:34:49Tommy.
00:34:51He didn't like it.
00:34:53No, he didn't like it, but he's got two acts in there instead of Ditka
00:34:56because last week Ditka against Washington displeased him with his blocking or absence thereof.
00:35:03That's what the paper says.
00:35:05Third down now in five as we look at the Giants' sideline, Bobby Duhan, 28, Joe Morrison,
00:35:1113-year veteran, played six different positions for the Giants over the years.
00:35:15We look now at Roger Staubach as a third down and six.
00:35:19Hayes comes to the left.
00:35:21Calvin Hill moves into the slot.
00:35:22Allworth will go right.
00:35:23All this in an attempt to get man-on-man coverage.
00:35:26Staubach.
00:35:27He'll run, and he's a good one.
00:35:29Staubach for the first down at the Giants' 27-yard line.
00:35:33Valvec forcing Staubach out of bounds.
00:35:36This crowd likes that.
00:35:38Yep, very exciting, but only a pale image of the Meredith of yesteryear in a similar situation.
00:35:44Oh, me.
00:35:45You know, he did have man-to-man coverage that time, Frank.
00:35:48I don't know whether he felt that his timing was off or what it was.
00:35:52He brought it down and decided to run.
00:35:53Did pick up the first down, but he did have man-to-man coverage in the secondary.
00:35:57So he did accomplish what that unusual formation was concerned.
00:36:01I think it was pointed out in the last three games the Cowboys have used
00:36:0422 different offensive formations or offensive sets.
00:36:07They do move them around.
00:36:08Well, they moved them around already this evening.
00:36:10420 remains in the first quarter.
00:36:12First and 10 for the Cowboys on the Giants' 26-yard line.
00:36:15This time it works.
00:36:16Billy Truax inside the Giants' 15.
00:36:19Carl Lockhart makes the stop, number 43.
00:36:23The Cowboys, from that I formation in which they run on a quick count or on set,
00:36:28were instructed to run basically or approximately 10 percent of the time
00:36:32from that formation to keep the Giant defense alert.
00:36:35So we'll see if our statisticians can see if Roger is accurate
00:36:39and is carrying out his instructions to do that about 10 percent of the time.
00:36:42That play was wide open, incidentally.
00:36:44First and 10 for the Cowboys on the Giants' 13-yard line.
00:36:47It's tied up 3 apiece here at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas.
00:36:50Roger Staubach moving his football team all over the lot.
00:36:53This is Allworth now coming motion left.
00:36:56Hand-off goes to Garrison.
00:36:58Garrison to about the 12-yard line.
00:37:00Garrison to about the 12-yard line.
00:37:02Now tack is there.
00:37:03Lockhart, Joe Green.
00:37:07Joe Green, 33.
00:37:08Walt Garrison took over from, in my opinion,
00:37:10one of the better fullbacks I've ever played.
00:37:12190 pounds, 5'10 1⁄2", stretching real hard.
00:37:15That was Don Perkins.
00:37:17Walt Garrison is probably a little bit faster than Perkins.
00:37:20He has carried the ball four times tonight for 16 yards.
00:37:24He's real quick. He's got good moves.
00:37:27He's a great pass receiver,
00:37:28and they utilize him in all those departments tonight.
00:37:31He's a bulldogger, a calf roper, a bare-buck front rider,
00:37:36and a heck of a guy.
00:37:38All those things make you good guys, by the way.
00:37:40Second down and 5 now for the Cowboys.
00:37:44Allworth again, motion left.
00:37:46This is Calvin Hill.
00:37:48John Nyland blocking out front.
00:37:50What a block he made.
00:37:51Calvin Hill to the 4-yard line.
00:37:54The 76, John Nyland, lay a crushing block
00:37:57on the Giants cornerback.
00:37:59You also saw Calvin Hill say, hey, I need you,
00:38:01and he waited a little bit,
00:38:02which is also the mark of a great back.
00:38:04Let's take another look at it.
00:38:05Calvin Hill, number 35, 76, as Frank pointed out.
00:38:07Here's John Nyland.
00:38:09This play looks like it's going to be closed off.
00:38:11You'll see Calvin wait a minute,
00:38:12and then watch this block by Nyland.
00:38:14That was Willie Williams.
00:38:15It looked like he blocked.
00:38:17And here he goes.
00:38:21Calvin Hill, truly a great back.
00:38:22Rookie of the year two years ago.
00:38:26Webster on the sideline,
00:38:27has sent in his goal line defense.
00:38:29Ron Hornsby has come in.
00:38:31Henry Reed has come in.
00:38:34They like the sweeps, and here they come.
00:38:39Ron Hornsby.
00:38:42Very close to the first down.
00:38:45Did appear as if he picked up an up yardage
00:38:47for the first down.
00:38:49What a tough runner he is.
00:38:50Calvin Hill.
00:38:52I'd like the viewers to take a good look at Ron Hornsby
00:38:55when he's in there during the course of the evening.
00:38:57Number 67.
00:38:59He was the Giants' third round draft choice,
00:39:02and he was very highly regarded
00:39:04at the college all-star camp earlier this year,
00:39:07and he's viewed as a first-rate pro spot
00:39:09by everybody in pro football.
00:39:11We're looking at young Hornsby now.
00:39:15Number 67.
00:39:18And a reminder that these teams are both 2-1.
00:39:21As they trail the Redskins
00:39:23under the brilliant leadership of George Allen,
00:39:25who are already at 4-0,
00:39:27so this is a critical contest.
00:39:29A loser tonight falls two games
00:39:31behind Mr. Allen's group,
00:39:33and that's not a happy position to be in.
00:39:35I think this is a very good decision
00:39:37on Coach Landry's part.
00:39:38His fourth down and less than a foot to go.
00:39:41A lot of coaches say,
00:39:42let's try to kick a field goal.
00:39:43He really doesn't have a good angle.
00:39:45Let's see, his fourth down,
00:39:46probably a straight handoff right in the middle.
00:39:48But he's got good runners.
00:39:50He needs about a foot.
00:39:54Calvin Hill, he should have it.
00:39:57And he fumbled the football.
00:40:00And it appeared at the bottom of the pile
00:40:02that Calvin Hill had fumbled the football.
00:40:10He did have the necessary yardage.
00:40:16Calvin Hill.
00:40:18Apparently held on to the football
00:40:20at the bottom of that pile.
00:40:21The Giants indicated they had recovered.
00:40:25So it'll be first and goal now for the Cowboys,
00:40:27the ball resting on the Giants' two-yard line.
00:40:33Out to the right goes Allworth.
00:40:35Garrison, 32.
00:40:37Calvin Hill, 35 for the setbacks.
00:40:40Watch this sweep.
00:40:42Look out.
00:40:43Drawback fumbles.
00:40:44It's on the bottom of the ten-yard line.
00:40:48Just a simple, bad exchange from center.
00:40:51You get a little nervous down there,
00:40:53but you're paid to get nervous and handle it.
00:40:57All right, the Giants go out of their goal line defense.
00:41:00Let's see what happens.
00:41:01See if it's between the...
00:41:03It looked as if possibly the guard
00:41:04knocked the ball loose from the stallback's hand
00:41:08after he had taken the snap from center.
00:41:11Coach Landry and Rayfield right.
00:41:18Second down now.
00:41:19The ball on the ten-yard line.
00:41:23Allworth motions right.
00:41:25The toss to Calvin Hill.
00:41:27Talbert, 72, with a fine block
00:41:29as Hill moves to the five-yard line.
00:41:34Ralph Neely, number 73,
00:41:36all the way over from his left side tackle position
00:41:38out in front of that.
00:41:40Up of about five yards.
00:41:42Jim Kanicki on the sidelines, number 73,
00:41:46trying to decide whether the Giants
00:41:48want to go into their goal line defense.
00:41:52Jim Catcavage waving out on the field.
00:41:55The former Giants defensive end.
00:41:56The ball is 35.
00:41:57They will not go into their goal line defense.
00:42:00Up to the right.
00:42:01Hayes to the left.
00:42:02Allworth.
00:42:05Stallback looking and in trouble.
00:42:08Now he gets away.
00:42:11Stallback over the five to about the three,
00:42:13and he fobbled the ball, but was he down?
00:42:15He was not.
00:42:16The Cowboys have fumbled.
00:42:17The Giants take over.
00:42:19Incredible.
00:42:20I thought he was going to shoot him.
00:42:21Really, really something, isn't it?
00:42:23Unbelievable.
00:42:26A continuing ineptitude.
00:42:29Three fumbles in the first period,
00:42:31and that's the end of the first quarter
00:42:32here at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas.
00:42:34The score, the Giants three, the Cowboys three.
00:42:41This is Ford's Pinto three-door runabout.
00:42:45Different where it counts.
00:42:47We finish Pinto with five coats of paint
00:42:50so it can fight off the salt air of Maine.
00:42:53And we made Pinto small enough
00:42:55for maneuvering through New York traffic.
00:42:59We designed Pinto to start easily
00:43:01on December mornings in Minnesota.
00:43:04We made Pinto roomy enough for tall Texas drivers.
00:43:09We gave Pinto the strength to climb the Rockies.
00:43:13Pinto was made to stop quickly in emergencies
00:43:15on Los Angeles freeways.
00:43:17And for windy days on the Golden Gate Bridge,
00:43:20we gave Pinto a wider track than the leading imports.
00:43:24The Pinto three-door runabout.
00:43:27See it at your Ford's Pinto three-door runabout.
00:43:31The Pinto three-door runabout.
00:43:34See it at your Ford dealer's.
00:43:36Pinto, different where it counts.
00:43:39Another better idea from Ford.
00:43:44This is the play that just ended the first period.
00:43:47Watch Walt Garrison.
00:43:48As we know, Stoback is scrambling here.
00:43:51He is on green, number 33.
00:43:52You see him opening here.
00:43:54This is a tough decision for a quarterback to make,
00:43:56but my goodness, he's wide open.
00:43:58There he is.
00:43:59Now we're gonna show you the fumble.
00:44:00Rodgers decided to run.
00:44:02And there's the fumble.
00:44:04And it was a fumble, and I believe it was
00:44:07covered by Dreyer, wasn't it?
00:44:10The Giants will take over.
00:44:11First and 10, the ball on their own four-yard line.
00:44:15Cowboys missing a golden opportunity
00:44:17for at least three points.
00:44:18They had driven from their own 38-yard line.
00:44:2213 plays.
00:44:23Stoback fumbling at the four.
00:44:25The Giants now take over.
00:44:27First play of the second period.
00:44:28The score tied three apiece.
00:44:30Parkinson all the way at quarterback.
00:44:32Rich Houston, number 84,
00:44:33comes to the left in motion.
00:44:35Parkinson going for the end zone
00:44:37and throwing it away.
00:44:39You're exactly right.
00:44:40He sure did.
00:44:41And a very good move by Parkinson.
00:44:45An attempt to Joe Morrison,
00:44:47who was double-covered on the right side
00:44:49as we look at the official statistics
00:44:51of the first quarter.
00:44:54Dallas Cowboys, 21 offensive plays.
00:44:56The Giants, 10.
00:44:57But it's tied at three apiece,
00:44:58and that's what counts.
00:44:59Right, Don?
00:45:00That's it.
00:45:02You can run them all day
00:45:03between those 20s.
00:45:05You got to do something with them
00:45:06when you get down there.
00:45:10For the Giants, second down and 10.
00:45:12Ball on their own four.
00:45:14Fran Tarkenton,
00:45:15never missed a football game
00:45:17in 10 years of play.
00:45:19Playing his 140th third game this evening.
00:45:23Running hard.
00:45:24Unbelievable.
00:45:25Unbelievable.
00:45:26And Bobby Duhan.
00:45:27He almost broke it.
00:45:28Harris is there.
00:45:29Number 43, Renfro, 20.
00:45:31Big pop coming up
00:45:33on the left side
00:45:34behind the block of Bob Highland,
00:45:35Willie Young, and Greg Larson
00:45:37for the Giants.
00:45:38Those guys had opened up a good one.
00:45:40Mel Renfro that came in
00:45:41from his halfback position.
00:45:46Just short of the first down,
00:45:48third at about a yard.
00:45:52Out of the lineup is Clifton McNeil.
00:45:55Giants bringing in
00:45:57number 87, Dick Cotite,
00:45:58another tied in,
00:45:59along with
00:46:01number 38, Bob Tucker,
00:46:02two tied ins,
00:46:03in for blocking on short yardage.
00:46:07Houston comes left.
00:46:08Morrison, he'll go nowhere.
00:46:10Bob Lilly
00:46:12nails Morrison at the 10-yard line.
00:46:15No, he can do that.
00:46:16Usually they put two men on him.
00:46:18He's got a way of flipping around him.
00:46:21He's extremely quick,
00:46:22as has been pointed out many times.
00:46:23I suppose if he has
00:46:24a number one great asset,
00:46:25that would be it.
00:46:27Closely followed by
00:46:28only great assets.
00:46:30He is a great one.
00:46:31I've used that seven times.
00:46:32That means Bob Lilly is great.
00:46:34He is.
00:46:35He could use that another seven
00:46:36because he truly is.
00:46:38On defense of the Giants
00:46:39from his own end zone,
00:46:40Tom Blanchard,
00:46:41the rookie from Oregon.
00:46:44And deep,
00:46:45number 41, Charlie Waters,
00:46:46and number 43, Cliff Harris
00:46:48for the Cowboys.
00:46:49Waters is the nearest to you.
00:46:54Cliff Harris
00:46:55at his own 45.
00:46:56He'll try and get around
00:46:57behind the picket line.
00:46:59And he almost
00:47:00fumbles a football.
00:47:03This is unreal.
00:47:05They recovered,
00:47:06but I'll tell you,
00:47:07this is unreal.
00:47:09The bottom of that pile,
00:47:10I believe, is Steve Alexikos.
00:47:18And with timeout,
00:47:19the score is
00:47:20the Giants 3,
00:47:21the Cowboys 3.
00:47:24Now's the time
00:47:25to make sure you've got
00:47:26the kind of tire you need
00:47:27to go this winter.
00:47:29And look at what
00:47:30you've got going for you
00:47:31with Firestone's
00:47:32Town & Country Snow Tire.
00:47:34Now's the time
00:47:35to buy Town & Country
00:47:36so your Firestone dealers
00:47:37beat the snow sale.
00:47:38Buy one Town & Country
00:47:39at the regular exchange price.
00:47:41And you get
00:47:42the second Town & Country
00:47:43at half price.
00:47:45All sizes,
00:47:46black or white stripe.
00:47:47Use your BankAmericard,
00:47:48Master Charge,
00:47:49or Firestone Unicharge.
00:47:51Firestone,
00:47:52the mileage specialist.
00:47:55Here's a child
00:47:56whose father
00:47:57loves shaving so much
00:47:58he won't let him
00:47:59in the bathroom.
00:48:00Look at him.
00:48:02What causes this?
00:48:03Only Schick Super Chromium.
00:48:05It's so comfortable
00:48:06you'll actually look forward
00:48:07to your next shave.
00:48:08Your boots need polishing.
00:48:10Your buckle needs shining.
00:48:12And you need a shave.
00:48:14Thank you, sir.
00:48:16Thank you.
00:48:17What makes this soldier
00:48:18so happy?
00:48:19Only Schick Super Chromium.
00:48:20It's so comfortable
00:48:21you'll actually look forward
00:48:22to your next shave.
00:48:28The Cowboys.
00:48:31As we look on.
00:48:36The Cowboys have
00:48:37recovered their fumble.
00:48:38Their third fumble
00:48:39of the ball game.
00:48:40They lost one.
00:48:41The Giants have fumbled twice.
00:48:42They've lost both of them.
00:48:44Cowboys first and ten.
00:48:45Now the ball
00:48:46on their own 48-yard line.
00:48:47Again, moving around.
00:48:52Now back looking for Alworth.
00:48:54Alworth.
00:48:56The ball was picked off
00:48:57by Athens,
00:48:58but he was out of bounds.
00:49:00In and out of the hands
00:49:01of Alworth.
00:49:03What a brilliant career
00:49:04Alworth has had over the years
00:49:05as we look at the little rookie.
00:49:07I won't call him little,
00:49:08but he's not the biggest.
00:49:10He's made 184 pounds.
00:49:12Frank, I'm beginning to think
00:49:13that Don puts the whammy
00:49:15on his old ball club.
00:49:17We came in here last year
00:49:18and saw massive evidence
00:49:19of futility
00:49:20and so far,
00:49:21the Cowboys,
00:49:22it's very early yet,
00:49:23we admit,
00:49:24are simply not playing
00:49:25their game.
00:49:26Well, why are you
00:49:27blaming me, Howard?
00:49:28It's about time.
00:49:29About time.
00:49:30Second down and ten
00:49:31from the 48.
00:49:32Calvin Hill,
00:49:33running hard,
00:49:34moves across the 50-yard line
00:49:35to about the 48.
00:49:42That is one of those
00:49:43pretties you have down here, Don.
00:49:44You've been telling me about.
00:49:46No, I think that's...
00:49:48That has something
00:49:49to do with that.
00:49:53Pickup of about four yards
00:49:54for Calvin Hill.
00:49:55Third down now and seven.
00:49:56The ball inside
00:49:57Giant Territory
00:49:58at the 48-yard line.
00:50:04Roger Staubach
00:50:05going all the way,
00:50:0612 minutes and 30 seconds
00:50:07remain in the first half.
00:50:09You can call that formation
00:50:10what you want.
00:50:11All worth goes motion.
00:50:14It's time for Bob Hayes.
00:50:15Asterix is there for the tackle.
00:50:17Good catch by Bobby.
00:50:18Great catch by Bob Hayes.
00:50:20Sure caught his...
00:50:21Looked like he got
00:50:22a real hard fall.
00:50:23Came back,
00:50:24hit his head on the
00:50:25hard turf.
00:50:26I will take him.
00:50:27He's going out on
00:50:28sideline route.
00:50:29Making a move.
00:50:30This is Athens.
00:50:31Pete Athens coming here.
00:50:32Bob goes up.
00:50:33Keeps his eye on the ball.
00:50:34That's a heck of a catch.
00:50:35Watch his back of his head.
00:50:36Wow.
00:50:37He is down there.
00:50:38We'll take one look at it again.
00:50:39He fakes a play pattern.
00:50:40It was a double-wing set.
00:50:41Good protection.
00:50:42Roger throws
00:50:43sideline route.
00:50:45And what a fall.
00:50:46What a fall.
00:50:47Realize he jumped about
00:50:48three feet.
00:50:49He's about six feet.
00:50:50No, that's falling ten feet
00:50:51almost.
00:50:52Hit right on your head.
00:50:54Cowboys moving again.
00:50:55They have a first and ten
00:50:56on the Giants 34-yard line.
00:50:58This is Calvin Hill
00:50:59with a big hole.
00:51:00Spinning and twisting.
00:51:01Douglas makes the tackle.
00:51:05John Douglas, number 51,
00:51:06coming over.
00:51:07Dave Manders with a fine block.
00:51:09As did Rayfield Wright
00:51:10for the Cowboys.
00:51:11John, that's what
00:51:12Stroubelson understands so far.
00:51:14As we watch
00:51:15Jim Files.
00:51:16Watch Jim Files,
00:51:17number 58,
00:51:18as Hill comes through,
00:51:20slides right off Jimmy,
00:51:22and moves on for the game.
00:51:25You know that that
00:51:26Dallas offensive line
00:51:27can move the Giants
00:51:28defensive line.
00:51:29It's a great offensive line.
00:51:30I thought they'd run
00:51:31every play.
00:51:34One second and two.
00:51:35Alworth coming motion right.
00:51:36This is Garrison
00:51:37trying to cut back.
00:51:38He follows the football.
00:51:39Freddy Dreier
00:51:40has the football.
00:51:4189 of the Giants
00:51:42with the football.
00:51:43And how about
00:51:44this for an exhibition?
00:51:45That is the fourth
00:51:46Dallas fumble.
00:51:47We have played something
00:51:48less than 20 minutes
00:51:50in this football game.
00:51:51The Cowboys have fumbled
00:51:52four times.
00:51:53The Giants have fumbled twice.
00:51:55Take another look at it, John.
00:51:57Well, it's Walt Garrison
00:51:58with a 3-7 switchoff tackle.
00:52:00All tackle block,
00:52:01but he just didn't have
00:52:02that ball tucked away.
00:52:03Hit it pretty good.
00:52:04I'll tell you,
00:52:05he was hit hard.
00:52:06Jim Files really popped him.
00:52:10That's the way I see it.
00:52:11Jim Files moving in
00:52:13really put a popper on him.
00:52:14He really did.
00:52:15He hit him back
00:52:16with a scare in the ball.
00:52:17First and 10 for the Giants
00:52:19from their own 24-yard line.
00:52:22Out to the left, McNeil.
00:52:23Tarleton straight drop back.
00:52:25Looking for the screen to Duhan.
00:52:29Fly goes down as Duhan
00:52:31moves across the 30-yard line.
00:52:37Could have been
00:52:39either a clip or a hold.
00:52:41Looks like Bob Tucker,
00:52:42number 38, Frank.
00:52:44We don't want to anticipate,
00:52:46but Bob ran over
00:52:47and complained vitally
00:52:48to the official.
00:52:52That was going to be
00:52:55expensive for the Giants.
00:52:59The clipping call.
00:53:01And I believe you were correct, Howard.
00:53:03Bob Tucker,
00:53:04at least he was complaining
00:53:06that he did not clip.
00:53:08Actually, I think he is.
00:53:09He does clip,
00:53:10and it's 52.
00:53:11Dave Edwards is the one that he clips.
00:53:12We'll see.
00:53:13Fran, as he shifts a little bit,
00:53:14throws it out.
00:53:15You'll watch Duhan take it.
00:53:17And there it is right there.
00:53:18It's frozen.
00:53:19That was 38.
00:53:20Tucker.
00:53:22And good call with the official.
00:53:25First down now in 21.
00:53:26McNeil will be left.
00:53:29Parkinson wants to go deep.
00:53:31He has Houston there.
00:53:33Oh, and he can't hold on
00:53:34to the football.
00:53:35Dick Houston
00:53:36had thoroughly
00:53:37beaten Herb Adderley.
00:53:39And Parkinson
00:53:40hit him dead in stride.
00:53:41A marvelous throw by Fran,
00:53:43and he's having tough luck
00:53:45with Houston,
00:53:46who scintillated
00:53:47the opening game
00:53:48of the season
00:53:49against Green Bay,
00:53:50but who last week
00:53:51against St. Louis
00:53:52missed one all alone
00:53:54down in the end zone.
00:53:56He must have had Adderley
00:53:57by about five yards
00:53:58on that one.
00:53:59We'll take a look at it
00:54:00if we can.
00:54:01Here's Fran.
00:54:02Missed it.
00:54:03We'll take a look at it
00:54:04if we can.
00:54:05Here's Fran.
00:54:06This ball travels
00:54:07close to 60 yards,
00:54:08and he's got Adderley
00:54:09by about five.
00:54:11He just dropped it.
00:54:13I don't think it could have
00:54:14been thrown any better.
00:54:15No, it was right on the money.
00:54:16In defense of Dick Houston,
00:54:18that is the longest walk
00:54:19back to any huddle
00:54:20you'll ever take.
00:54:22That's not defense.
00:54:23That's an embarrassment.
00:54:25I've been there.
00:54:26It is embarrassing.
00:54:28Ben, hang your head
00:54:29down a little bit.
00:54:30Say, I'm really sorry, Charlie.
00:54:31Why?
00:54:32All right, Tarkenton.
00:54:33Now at the second and 21.
00:54:35Ball on the Giants'
00:54:3613-yard line.
00:54:37McNeil left.
00:54:38Houston.
00:54:39McNeil right.
00:54:40Now Houston left.
00:54:41This is Morrison in motion.
00:54:42Duhan running hard.
00:54:44Big Bob Lilly,
00:54:45number 74, was there.
00:54:47Just dropped him like a plane.
00:54:55Ten minutes and four seconds
00:54:56remain in the first half.
00:54:58Now Tarkenton will have
00:54:59a third and 21.
00:55:02And we'll remind you
00:55:03that this Saturday on ABC,
00:55:04NCAA football,
00:55:06the Longhorns of Texas
00:55:07will take on the Razorbacks
00:55:08of Arkansas
00:55:09in Little Rock, Arkansas.
00:55:11That's this Saturday
00:55:12at 4 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time
00:55:13here on ABC.
00:55:14And they'll be smart
00:55:15and won't they, Howard?
00:55:17They sure will be.
00:55:18The Oklahomans
00:55:19didn't leave this town
00:55:21after what the Sooners
00:55:22did to the Longhorns
00:55:23until this morning
00:55:25at a big weekend.
00:55:27On third and 21,
00:55:28Tarkenton
00:55:29motioning to Houston.
00:55:33Pressure.
00:55:37George Andre
00:55:38made the tackle.
00:55:39The pressure
00:55:41from Jethro Pugh.
00:55:42Andre, 66.
00:55:47Now on the basis
00:55:48of what's happened thus far,
00:55:49Duhan is studying
00:55:50the gridiron
00:55:51in search of still
00:55:52another fumble.
00:55:55And on fourth down,
00:55:56Tom Blanchard
00:55:57will come back
00:55:58into the ballgame.
00:55:59Dropping deep for the Cowboys.
00:56:01Number 41, Charlie Waters.
00:56:02Cliff Harris, 43.
00:56:04Blanchard kicking
00:56:05from his own end zone.
00:56:08All tied,
00:56:09three apiece
00:56:10here at the Cotton Bowl.
00:56:11Low kick.
00:56:13The kind that can hurt.
00:56:19Oh!
00:56:20Harris is upset.
00:56:2139-yard punt,
00:56:2216-yard return.
00:56:24Cowboys moving
00:56:25to good field position.
00:56:28They'll have first and 10
00:56:29on the Giants'
00:56:3034-yard line.
00:56:31In NFL Monday Night Football,
00:56:32the New York Giants
00:56:33versus the Dallas Cowboys
00:56:34continues from the Cotton Bowl
00:56:36with the score,
00:56:37New York 3, Dallas 3.
00:56:43We have all kinds of cars
00:56:44in our family,
00:56:45but we all use Sunoco.
00:56:47Because only Sunoco
00:56:48puts 260,
00:56:50highest octane gasoline
00:56:51at any station,
00:56:52into every gallon
00:56:53from regular up.
00:56:55You take cousin Tex
00:56:56and his big car.
00:56:57This here baby needs premium,
00:56:59and only Sunoco
00:57:00has some of that
00:57:01highest octane 260
00:57:02blended right in.
00:57:04My car runs on regular,
00:57:06and only Sunoco regular
00:57:08has got 260 in it.
00:57:10Now my car needs
00:57:11more octane than regular,
00:57:13and only Sunoco
00:57:14has a middle premium
00:57:15with 260 action.
00:57:16More octane than regular
00:57:18costs less than premium.
00:57:20There's a great gasoline
00:57:21for every one of us,
00:57:22Sunoco's custom blending pump.
00:57:24It blends some 260
00:57:25into every gallon
00:57:26of premium,
00:57:27middle premiums,
00:57:28even regular.
00:57:30So if you want performance
00:57:31for your car,
00:57:32join the gang at Sunoco.
00:57:34Howdy cous!
00:57:36Get Sunoco 260 action.
00:57:39Action to be used,
00:57:40not abused.
00:57:45From the Goodyear Blimp,
00:57:46America,
00:57:47we're our pilot
00:57:48Don Polinsnak.
00:57:50Circling over the cotton bowl.
00:57:52That's our situation.
00:57:54Don Polinsnak.
00:57:56Poles connect.
00:57:57That's better.
00:57:58Poles connect.
00:58:01That'll give us a good shot.
00:58:03First and ten for the Cowboys.
00:58:05They're inside giant territory again.
00:58:07They have the ball
00:58:08on the Giants' 34-yard line.
00:58:12Roger Staubach going all the way.
00:58:14Lance Allwood, motion left.
00:58:17This is Garrison.
00:58:21Garrison moving to about
00:58:22the 30-yard line.
00:58:26Jerry Shea, 75 there.
00:58:28Bob Lurchman, 71 for the Giants
00:58:29on the stop.
00:58:31Wouldn't be surprised to see them
00:58:33at least attempt to take it
00:58:34all the way in on the ground.
00:58:35Yep.
00:58:36You watch them come back out
00:58:37and start trying to throw right now,
00:58:38but they do need to establish this.
00:58:40This is what they were lacking
00:58:41last week,
00:58:42and this supposedly was what
00:58:43their game plan was tonight.
00:58:44We're going to run.
00:58:45Let's see what they do.
00:58:46Out to the left goes Allwood.
00:58:48On second down and six.
00:58:50Calvin Hill and Calvin Hill
00:58:51upset by Freddie Dreyer,
00:58:52number 89.
00:58:54Good move by Dreyer.
00:58:55Came in under that one and got it.
00:58:56Excellent.
00:58:57That's one of the interesting
00:58:58matchups of the night.
00:58:59Neely against Dreyer.
00:59:00Neely's been up against
00:59:01some good ones,
00:59:02and he's used to come out
00:59:03on the tall score of that thing,
00:59:05but Dreyer made a good move
00:59:06that time,
00:59:07came in there under him.
00:59:09Third down now and four
00:59:10for the Cowboys.
00:59:13Dallas, 26 plays,
00:59:1595 yards to New York,
00:59:1617 plays here in the first half,
00:59:18and 50 yards.
00:59:22Third and four.
00:59:23Hayes goes left,
00:59:24Allwood's right.
00:59:25Hayes will be covered
00:59:26by Willie Williams.
00:59:27Allwood by Athens.
00:59:31Foul back
00:59:32will be wiped out at the 35.
00:59:35Good pressure.
00:59:36Valpeck coming on the blitz
00:59:37from his linebacking position.
00:59:39Fred Dreyer pressuring
00:59:40and Carl Lockhart
00:59:41coming on the safety blitz.
00:59:42Frank, we've seen the Cowboys
00:59:44blow so many opportunities
00:59:45with great field position tonight.
00:59:47One must openly wonder
00:59:48about the efficacy
00:59:49of the two-quarterback system.
00:59:51It doesn't seem possible, really,
00:59:53to sustain consistency
00:59:54of leadership
00:59:55and consistency of team timing
00:59:57and rhythm
00:59:58when you play different
00:59:59quarterbacks weekly
01:00:00and they're different types.
01:00:01Morton a drop back
01:00:02and Staubach more of a scramble.
01:00:06Mike Clark will attempt
01:00:07the field goal
01:00:08from the 41-yard line
01:00:09and in the end zone,
01:00:10Rocky Thompson.
01:00:16Well, you saw it
01:00:17bouncing off the crossbar,
01:00:19the supporting crossbar.
01:00:21Mike Clark
01:00:23hits on his second field goal.
01:00:31Mike Clark hit earlier
01:00:32on a 42-yard field goal
01:00:35and just now hit on a 41-yarder.
01:00:39You know, most people
01:00:40never think about it,
01:00:41but a number of football fans
01:00:42who follow the NFL each week
01:00:43are not able to see the game.
01:00:45Those of you who have a visual
01:00:47or a physical handicap
01:00:48might like to know
01:00:49that NFL season schedules
01:00:50are available free in Braille
01:00:52and books on football
01:00:53and talking book records
01:00:54also are available.
01:00:56Those interested
01:00:57are invited to write
01:00:58to the Library of Congress
01:00:59Division for the Blind
01:01:00and Physically Handicapped
01:01:02at Washington, D.C.
01:01:0320542.
01:01:08And it's fair time
01:01:09in Dallas, Texas.
01:01:11This is a view
01:01:12from the Goodyear Blimp, America.
01:01:14That's really pretty.
01:01:15You know,
01:01:16the first time I ever came
01:01:17to Dallas was to see
01:01:18the State Fair,
01:01:19the 4-H Club.
01:01:22Mike Clark
01:01:23kicks off.
01:01:24This is Rocky Thompson
01:01:25at the 2.
01:01:27Thompson over the 20
01:01:28where he's upended
01:01:29at about the 22.
01:01:32Dwayne Thomas again
01:01:33hustling downfield
01:01:34along with Danny Reeves,
01:01:35number 30.
01:01:36Thomas, 33.
01:01:37You know, Danny Reeves
01:01:38is the coach.
01:01:39He was talking to him today.
01:01:40He says, Ben, I can't believe it.
01:01:41I thought coaching
01:01:42was going to be a lot of fun.
01:01:43I never was on a kicking team
01:01:44in my life.
01:01:45They got him on the kicking team.
01:01:46He's a backup quarterback.
01:01:47He's a backup runner.
01:01:48He's a backup receiver.
01:01:50I said, what do you think about that?
01:01:51He says, I think I'm just a backup.
01:01:54He's a great athlete.
01:01:55I guess he puts himself
01:01:56where he likes to put
01:01:58other people, Don.
01:01:59I don't know.
01:02:00He's not afraid to go there.
01:02:01Yeah.
01:02:02First and 10 for the Giants.
01:02:04They have the ball
01:02:05on their only 22-yard line.
01:02:10Motion is Duhan.
01:02:14Parkinson hits Duhan.
01:02:15Duhan draws a crowd.
01:02:19Number 20, Mel Renfrow, is there.
01:02:22Cliff Harris coming up.
01:02:25Pickup of about three.
01:02:27There's our young friend, Fred Dryer,
01:02:29considered by many undersized
01:02:31at the defensive end position,
01:02:33but a very great athlete,
01:02:34always surprising,
01:02:35capable of the good pass rush.
01:02:37Some feel that a position
01:02:39that's going to linebacker,
01:02:40he would quickly become
01:02:41another mad star of the game.
01:02:43He's taking a little oxygen there.
01:02:48And out of the field,
01:02:49Fran Tarkenton is faced
01:02:50with a second down and six.
01:02:51Tarkenton now, 7 of 10 to 31 yards.
01:02:55The ball on his own 24-yard line.
01:02:57Moves Duhan into the slot.
01:03:02It's Houston.
01:03:03As flags go down,
01:03:06Cowboys moving across the line of scrimmage.
01:03:08Were they drawn off?
01:03:09There's a lot of traffic on both sides.
01:03:11You saw Tarkenton trying to tell
01:03:12his boys where to line up.
01:03:13As they lined up,
01:03:14you could see Leroy Jordan,
01:03:16who is responsible for calling
01:03:18the defensive audibles,
01:03:19changing his defensive alignment
01:03:21as Tarkenton changed his offense.
01:03:23It was almost to,
01:03:24almost to the lay of the game,
01:03:25but the Cowboys were drawn off.
01:03:27Looks like George Andre was the culprit.
01:03:30You suppose these two teams
01:03:31spent the day at the starting line
01:03:33of the game,
01:03:34and the Cowboys were drawn off?
01:03:36You suppose these two teams
01:03:38spent the day at the state fair?
01:03:40I doubt that.
01:03:41There were a lot of people out here, though.
01:03:43There's a man who didn't.
01:03:45He had expected his number one runner,
01:03:47Ron Johnson, would be back today.
01:03:51It was ruled that he could not play physically.
01:03:53He was put on the move list.
01:03:54He'll be out for another two weeks.
01:03:55On second down, now on 12.
01:03:57Tarkenton on the straight drop back.
01:03:59Firing for McNeil.
01:04:00He has him at the 29-yard line.
01:04:02Short of the first down.
01:04:05Now Renfrow defending.
01:04:09Winston McNeil, the Giants' leading receiver
01:04:11of a year ago with 50 receptions.
01:04:131968, he led the National Football League
01:04:16in receptions in San Francisco.
01:04:20Here you're going to get an idea
01:04:21of Fran Tarkenton's respect for the Dallas defense.
01:04:23He has a third, and we'll call it a long two
01:04:25for a first down.
01:04:29That's a pretty tough decision to be in.
01:04:31Fran's done a fine job tonight.
01:04:33Running that ball club.
01:04:36Rocky Thompson looking on.
01:04:43And he will throw.
01:04:44He's going for the bundle.
01:04:46He has Houston.
01:04:48Houston steps out of bounds.
01:04:50Houston inside Dallas territory
01:04:52to the 34-yard line, and I'll tell you,
01:04:54that's a gutsy call.
01:04:55That's a gutsy call, and it really looked easy.
01:04:57I don't know how he got behind.
01:04:58Speed Mel Renfrow, handsome.
01:05:00This guy's got some speed.
01:05:01This guy's got some speed or some moves or something.
01:05:03Rich Houston, number 84.
01:05:05Good move, and it was a good call.
01:05:07He is a speedster.
01:05:08It's tough to pick up those two real tough yards.
01:05:10You'll see him again.
01:05:11Comes back.
01:05:12That's just a straight drop back,
01:05:13not a play action or anything.
01:05:15I don't know what it is.
01:05:16Straight call a fly or takeoff route.
01:05:18We'll watch him.
01:05:19He's behind him, and right there,
01:05:21he steps out of bounds.
01:05:23The interesting thing about Richie
01:05:24is that they had apparently a year ago
01:05:26given up on him as a wide receiver.
01:05:28Two years ago, he showed promise.
01:05:29He spent all of training this year on defense,
01:05:31then opened against Green Bay and blew the game open
01:05:34on offense back at wide receiver.
01:05:37On first and 10, the Giants have the football
01:05:39on the Cowboys' 35-yard line.
01:05:41The sprint out, the draw back to Joe Morrison.
01:05:45Morrison breaking tackles, moves inside the 25-yard line.
01:05:51Finally, dropped there by Jethro Pugh, number 75,
01:05:54coming all the way over from his left side.
01:05:56It is surprising to find the Giants
01:05:58doing this against a very great Dallas team
01:06:01or at least very great personnel.
01:06:03Morrison continues to be an amazing player,
01:06:06aging Joey Morrison, the all-purpose football player.
01:06:10He can play anywhere.
01:06:12Football fans around the country know that.
01:06:14He always has.
01:06:15He remains to this day without foot speed
01:06:17a very wise runner and a very wise receiver.
01:06:21He is all of that and more.
01:06:24He's never missed a football game because of an injury.
01:06:27Rare for a running back.
01:06:29First and 10 for the Giants,
01:06:30the ball on the Cowboys' 24-yard line.
01:06:33Going for McNeil, overthrows.
01:06:36McNeil with Adderley beat to the outside.
01:06:39Six minutes and 12 seconds remain
01:06:41to be played in the first half.
01:06:43Francis Tarkenton, 9 of 13, 69%.
01:06:49Over 210, well, 210 touchdown passes in his career.
01:06:57Some of this crowd of over 60,000
01:07:02looking on.
01:07:04Giants with the football.
01:07:06They have a second down and 10.
01:07:08Ball resting.
01:07:09The Cowboys' 23-and-a-half-yard line.
01:07:12Six minutes and 12 seconds remain in the first half.
01:07:15Out to the right goes McNeil.
01:07:17McNeil to the left.
01:07:19Now, Duhan in motion right.
01:07:24All alone is Bob Tucker.
01:07:27Tucker out of bounds at the 3-yard line.
01:07:30They're really moving their formations around
01:07:32and just eating that defense up.
01:07:33That's what they did there, John.
01:07:35The Cowboys didn't even know really what was coming.
01:07:38I believe it was a mistake.
01:07:39We'll try it again.
01:07:40Let's see Tucker come out.
01:07:41You'll see Dave Edwards, 52, changing.
01:07:43That's an audible.
01:07:44You see Cornell Green, number 34, coming up.
01:07:46He's not supposed to come up.
01:07:47That's his man.
01:07:49It looked as if Cornell might try to blitz that time.
01:07:52I think they had a blitz trial with he and Dave Edwards both going.
01:07:55Whether Starking read that or not, I don't know.
01:07:58But if he didn't read it, he sure adjusted to it well.
01:08:01He completed his 10th pass.
01:08:0410 out of 14, 71%, 94 net yards thus far.
01:08:10And more important, a first and goal for the Giants
01:08:12at the 3-yard line of the Cowboys.
01:08:15Duhan behind Joe Morrison.
01:08:17He's met at the line of scrimmage,
01:08:18hurdles for maybe a yard.
01:08:21Dave Edwards, 52, unfiled.
01:08:2374, Bob Lilly is there.
01:08:31Duhan moving to the 1-yard line.
01:08:33Pat Toomey has come in.
01:08:35Number 67 for the Cowboys.
01:08:39As we look down from the Goodyear blimp,
01:08:43our pilot Don Polskanak giving us a fine view.
01:08:48The camera's man's old Bill Sullivan up there.
01:08:51They've got 200,000 cubic feet of helium,
01:08:54but we've got a football game.
01:08:56It's second down, the ball on the 1-yard line.
01:08:58Duhan again, and this time tripped up.
01:09:0375, Jeff Gropieu slipping through.
01:09:08The Giants insistent on running to that right side
01:09:11behind Charlie Harper and Doug Van Horn
01:09:14against Jeff Gropieu and Larry Cole of the Cowboys.
01:09:16Of course, what the Cowboys must be intimately aware of
01:09:19is that so often Fran runs it in himself.
01:09:23That's our situation.
01:09:25Five minutes and 20 seconds remaining.
01:09:27The Cowboys out in front.
01:09:28Two Mike Clark field goals.
01:09:31The Giants hitting on a Pete Gogolak field goal,
01:09:33and this will be play 10 of this drive.
01:09:36Third down, and it doesn't get easier.
01:09:46Down goes Tarkington.
01:09:47Cornell Green coming in from his safety position,
01:09:50if you'll call it that, in a goal-line defense.
01:09:53The flow in the backfield went away from Cornell.
01:09:55His assignment, when he doesn't have anybody come out of the backfield,
01:09:57rush the passers.
01:09:59That's from a safety position, and that's exactly what he did.
01:10:01You saw the flow came away from him.
01:10:03There's no one to block him.
01:10:05He comes after the quarterback.
01:10:08Cornell Green has just taken away the touchdown field position for the Giants.
01:10:13The Giants' Pete Gogolak has come on.
01:10:17Fine defensive effort by the Cowboys in their own five-yard line.
01:10:23Gogolak, who has already kicked the 35-yard field goal,
01:10:25will now attempt one from the 20.
01:10:32Stop.
01:10:34And it's good.
01:10:35Right through the upright Pete Gogolak.
01:10:38In NFL Monday Night Football,
01:10:39the New York Giants versus the Dallas Cowboys continues from the Cotton Bowl
01:10:43with the score, New York 6, Dallas 6.
01:10:55America.
01:10:58Merrill Lynch is bullish on America.
01:11:03In the years ahead, we see America growing in many different ways,
01:11:08and we want you to share in America's growth.
01:11:11That's why we've moved into different kinds of investments,
01:11:15not just stocks, but bonds, mutual funds, real estate, and more.
01:11:21Merrill Lynch has a lot of different ways to put your money to work.
01:11:26America.
01:11:42Merrill Lynch is bullish on America.
01:11:50Pete Gogolak has just kicked a 20-yard field goal to tie this football game up.
01:11:54Dallas 6.
01:11:57Deep for the Cowboys.
01:11:58Dwayne Thomas, 33.
01:12:00Cliff Harris, number 43.
01:12:03This crowd would like to see Dwayne Thomas get his hands on the football.
01:12:05He will not.
01:12:06This is Cliff Harris at the 2.
01:12:11Harris breaking to the outside.
01:12:15Did you see that block, Dwayne Thomas?
01:12:18Yeah, that was a good one.
01:12:19He's in there to play.
01:12:21Cliff Harris from Washtenaw Baptist up in Arkansas.
01:12:25Dave Roller offending Cliff Harris.
01:12:28A 27-yard kickoff return will give the Cowboys a first and 10 on their own 29-yard line.
01:12:36Out to the left goes Bob Hayes.
01:12:38Lance Allworth comes to the right.
01:12:40Four minutes, 15 seconds remain to be played in the first half.
01:12:45Sawback going deep for Bob Hayes, and he's there,
01:12:49and he drops the football.
01:12:52Bob Hayes drops the football at the 20-yard line.
01:12:55He had to wait for it.
01:12:57Yeah, he did.
01:12:58Willie Williams coming back to recover, but he did not get a hand on the football.
01:13:04Now, would it be physically possible with a good 7-yard pass drop to overthrow Bob Hayes
01:13:08going down on the sidelines with that speed?
01:13:11Yeah, it is, Frank.
01:13:12I've heard that before, but you can drop back and you can outthrow him, and he is fast.
01:13:16You'll see him there on a 7-yard drop.
01:13:17Make a fake.
01:13:18Roger can throw the ball farther than he threw that one right there.
01:13:22A little bit late.
01:13:23He did get there about the same time that Spider Lockhart did, coming in from his free safety.
01:13:28I'm sure that Roger Sawback will not forget that play.
01:13:31Four minutes remain to be played in the first half.
01:13:33Second down and 10 for the Cowboys.
01:13:35The ball on their own 29-yard line.
01:13:36Allworth right, Hayes left.
01:13:40Firing for Allworth.
01:13:45Off target is Roger Sawback.
01:13:48Flag is down at the line of scrimmage.
01:13:53A little too high or a little too low.
01:13:59Doesn't make for a good offensive show.
01:14:01I just made a point.
01:14:03Who are our poets?
01:14:04Tommy Bell talks to Carl Lockhart.
01:14:09The acting captain on the field for the Giants.
01:14:16They're going to step it off.
01:14:20It is a biggie.
01:14:21Unless the Cowboys can get off a biggie in the way of a game, they're going to find themselves with four minutes and two seconds still remaining in the half,
01:14:29facing another talkative offensive with not too bad field position for the Giants.
01:14:37Offensive holding.
01:14:38The third 15-yard penalty against the Dallas Cowboys.
01:14:42Four minutes and two seconds remain now in the first half.
01:14:45Otto Brown, number 21, has come into the lineup for the Giants in the three-man defense.
01:14:49Second down, 25.
01:14:51Sawback looking.
01:14:54Oh, and he fires out to Bob Hayes, who is really up in it.
01:14:58Oh, Bobby catches him.
01:14:59They didn't make any pay for him tonight.
01:15:01He's hung on to a couple of good ones.
01:15:03Pete Athens moving up to make the stop.
01:15:06We also see Sawback utilizing Coach Landry's theory.
01:15:09Let's try to get half of it first.
01:15:11And he goes down.
01:15:12They had 25 to go.
01:15:13He's trying to pick up about 15.
01:15:15Good sideline pattern.
01:15:16The Giants have gone into their prevent defense.
01:15:18They've taken out one of their linemen and sent another back.
01:15:22So they had a lot of folks running back in that secondary.
01:15:24He did work to the outside.
01:15:28Third down now.
01:15:30It was second and 25.
01:15:32Keep in mind, it's now third and nine.
01:15:35And the guy to the left is Alworth.
01:15:36Hayes to the right.
01:15:37Giants in their prevent defense.
01:15:40Sawback will run.
01:15:42Files, misses.
01:15:43Sawback up to the 39-yard line.
01:15:46And he'll be very close to the first down,
01:15:48depending upon where they mark the football.
01:15:50Joe Green there on the stop.
01:15:56Sawback, not like where the official puts that football.
01:16:04Well, we'll have an interesting situation,
01:16:05because I think this is going to be about a foot short.
01:16:09And that will bring up a fourth down.
01:16:11Indeed, it is short, as it is.
01:16:15And Tom Landry.
01:16:17Tom's going to punt.
01:16:18The fans don't like it.
01:16:19But at least now they'll be punting from reasonable position,
01:16:22and the Giants won't be well situated in terms of field position,
01:16:26barring a long rundown.
01:16:27Of course.
01:16:28Has to be a good call, though, for head coach Tom Landry.
01:16:31He sends out his putter, Ron Whidbey.
01:16:34That's his average for the evening.
01:16:36If you can call one an average, we will.
01:16:39One for 53, Ron Whidbey, and he is a good putter.
01:16:44Dropping deep for the Giants.
01:16:46Number 28, Bobby Duhan, and number 43, Carl Lockhart.
01:16:50Looking on from the sidelines, Tom Landry
01:16:52and his starting quarterback of this evening, Roger Sawback.
01:16:57High kick for Whidbey.
01:16:59Fair catch indicated by Duhan at the 22.
01:17:03Wise decision by Duhan.
01:17:05Had a lot of white jerseys around him.
01:17:07Does attract a crowd.
01:17:09Two minutes and 40 seconds remain to be played in the first half.
01:17:1239-yard punt.
01:17:16You know, this week you can really get to know four of the top stars
01:17:18in the entertainment world in a series of special 90-minute interviews
01:17:21on the Dick Cavett Show.
01:17:23Tomorrow night, meet Anthony Quinn.
01:17:24Wednesday night, Fred Astaire.
01:17:26Thursday night, Peter Ustinov.
01:17:27Friday night, Charlton Heston.
01:17:28Four very special people on four very special nights.
01:17:32That's on the Dick Cavett Show.
01:17:34First and ten for the Giants from their own 22-yard line.
01:17:41This time, Adderley will be well back.
01:17:43And Parkinson very wisely throws it out of bounds.
01:17:50Francis Francis.
01:17:51It's very seldom that Francis Parkinson had a bad day against Dallas.
01:17:55He usually keeps it interesting.
01:17:57I think part of the reason being, Don, that he moves around so much,
01:18:00and we started to get into it earlier,
01:18:02but if you move around a lot against Dallas,
01:18:04they are a very definite and a very well-drilled team, defensive team.
01:18:08If you can change those keys around a little bit,
01:18:10it does cause a little bit of confusion.
01:18:12That is exactly right.
01:18:14Second down, now in ten.
01:18:19Back in ten.
01:18:20Back to Bobby Duhan.
01:18:22Duhan scrambling for yardage up to almost the 30-yard line.
01:18:26They get the 29.
01:18:32Perhaps there should be a reminder, Frank,
01:18:34that the Giants are playing without their top two backs,
01:18:37Ron Johnson and Tucker Fredrickson.
01:18:39Tucker was earlier placed on the move list because of a leg injury,
01:18:43and, of course, Ron was placed on the move list today.
01:18:46At NFL Monday Night Football,
01:18:48the New York Giants versus the Dallas Cowboys continues from the Cotton Bowl
01:18:51with the score, New York six, Dallas six.
01:18:59If you think shaving your chin is hard, how do you think I feel?
01:19:03Up here you really worry when the razor drags or pulls or scrapes.
01:19:07No more.
01:19:08I hardly feel this shave.
01:19:10I'm using RapidShave's new lubricating lather.
01:19:13It puts a coating of lubrication between skin and blade
01:19:16so the razor slides like a sled on snow.
01:19:21How does it look?
01:19:22RapidShave's new lubricating lather.
01:19:24When it comes to your chin, use your head.
01:19:29Now's the time to make sure you've got the kind of tire you need to go this winter.
01:19:33And look at what you've got going for you with Firestone's Town & Country snow tire.
01:19:38Now's the time to buy Town & Country so that your Firestone dealers beat the snow sale.
01:19:42Buy one Town & Country at the regular exchange price,
01:19:46and you get the second Town & Country at half price.
01:19:49All sizes, black or white stripe.
01:19:51Use your BankAmericard, MasterCharge, or Firestone Unicharge.
01:19:55Firestone, the mileage specialist.
01:19:59Two minutes remain to be played in the Cotton Bowl.
01:20:02Two minutes remain to be played in the first half as we look at the score.
01:20:06The Giants six, Cowboys six.
01:20:09No touchdowns in the first half, and you'll see a lot of football games, pro football games,
01:20:12that you will not see that.
01:20:15But again, we have two minutes to be played in this first half.
01:20:17The Giants, with their three time outs, have the football at the 24-yard line,
01:20:22their own 24-yard line.
01:20:24Fran Tarkenton with a productive night in completions, not much yardage,
01:20:29but he's had one drop that possibly would have been a touchdown.
01:20:35McNeil left, Houston right.
01:20:37Duhan in the slot.
01:20:39The sprint-out draw.
01:20:41Morrison up over the 30, and he's waffled at just about the 30-yard line.
01:20:46Chuck Howley and Jethro Pugh coming over to stop Morrison.
01:20:51That will bring up Morrison down.
01:20:53The Giants will have to put it over to the Dallas Cowboys.
01:20:58The Cowboys, with their three time outs to make.
01:21:01The Cowboys coming into this game frame with a third-ranked offensive team
01:21:06in the National Football Conference,
01:21:09and they have not really displayed that ability so far tonight.
01:21:12So maybe they'll do it in this two-minute drill.
01:21:14We'll see how they come out.
01:21:15A great man to accept Tom Blanchard's punt, number 41, Charlie Waters,
01:21:18for Paris 43.
01:21:23Good high kick.
01:21:25Paris will field it at the 22.
01:21:27Gets a good block.
01:21:32Getting away from tackles for Paris.
01:21:35Finally dropped by Pat Hughes, 56.
01:21:37Great block by Cornell Green, as you pointed out.
01:21:39Cornell was the one who really got that thing started.
01:21:45All right.
01:21:46We'll see what the Cowboys can do with a minute and five remaining.
01:21:48They have their three time outs.
01:21:54Roger Stralbach comes over to the sidelines.
01:21:56Apparently they have elected to use one of their time outs.
01:22:00There's the conference that's going on.
01:22:01Don, you've been in many talks like this, haven't you?
01:22:05The thing they've got is a two-minute drill that they use.
01:22:08They have plays in for this period, a couple of them like a middle screen.
01:22:11They'll try to hit the middle.
01:22:12They'll try to utilize plays to the middle.
01:22:15They'll call a time out.
01:22:16A lot of times they'll call two plays in a huddle.
01:22:18I imagine that's what he's going to do to start off.
01:22:20He'll call two plays.
01:22:21He has time to get these things going out.
01:22:23He'll explain to his team, all right, I'm going to go down the middle the first time.
01:22:26We're going to complete it.
01:22:27We run such and such play.
01:22:28If the play is incomplete, I'll come back and do it again.
01:22:31It takes a lot of practice and a lot of drills for this.
01:22:33But this is one of the things that the Cowboys, in my opinion, do very well.
01:22:37They're extremely well-coached and well-drilled.
01:22:39In all these, there's Craig Martin, number 14, coming in.
01:22:42I guess Craig just came in to say hey.
01:22:45Hey, Rod.
01:22:47Van Tarkenton on the sidelines, going over with Jim Garrett, the opposite coach.
01:22:52Those are little films.
01:22:53Actually, the Polaroid film that they drop down from the huddle,
01:22:59they'll take from up here in the press box to show the defensive movement
01:23:02on certain situations.
01:23:04It's a great aid to the quarterbacks.
01:23:06They will pray, when you ran this, they did this.
01:23:08Now, what we expected them to do was something else.
01:23:10So it is a great coaching aid.
01:23:13Cowboys, first and 10 from their own 41-yard line.
01:23:17The quarterback, Billy Truax.
01:23:22He's going to hit Truax across the middle.
01:23:24Truax is going in the direction of the sideline.
01:23:26Had he not had the opportunity to go outside,
01:23:30I think you would have seen the Cowboys line up and run another play.
01:23:33He did go out of bounds and stop the clock.
01:23:35He had three receivers going to the outside,
01:23:37and this is, again, a two-minute period, as we mentioned.
01:23:40When they get out pretty close, you'll see the Giants go back into a basic defense,
01:23:44and the Cowboys will then go back to their basic offensive formation.
01:23:48All right, first and 10 now for the Cowboys.
01:23:50The ball on the Giants' 33-yard line.
01:23:52Fall back again, looking deep.
01:23:56Fires it down to the 20-yard line.
01:23:58Timeout, ref.
01:24:00Come on, Tommy Bell.
01:24:01Where are you?
01:24:02They called timeout.
01:24:05Joe Green there to make the stop.
01:24:08A lot of people watched in this two-minute period.
01:24:10They've been brought up how some quarterbacks are very good
01:24:12and some seem to be not so good.
01:24:14It also has a lot to do with the people that you have to play with.
01:24:18The Giants may play a certain type of defense
01:24:21that enables the Cowboys to do something very well.
01:24:23They're bringing Kruax out now,
01:24:25sending in Mike Ditka, who is certainly an adequate replacement.
01:24:28He started last week as the first team that Mike has not started his side in.
01:24:32But the Cowboys have a veritable plethora of talent.
01:24:36We'll use it one more time.
01:24:38Extremely well spoken.
01:24:40There is our situation, all tied up.
01:24:43Fifty seconds remain to be played.
01:24:45Polaroid shots being observed on the sidelines.
01:24:47Those pictures are actually snapped just as the ball is snapped,
01:24:50and it will give you an indication of the defensive set.
01:24:53Willie Young, the tackle,
01:24:55trying to get a line on what his man might be doing.
01:24:58Willie Young this evening up against George Andre.
01:25:03And Pat Kume has replaced Andre now.
01:25:05Greg Morton comes back from another conference.
01:25:07Be careful, that's no Rodgers.
01:25:09Greg wouldn't disapprove of Rodgers, right?
01:25:12But I imagine this time, Frank, he's gone over there.
01:25:14They're definitely in a good field goal position on the 18.
01:25:18In this area, I would imagine you might see him try to use the breaking pattern
01:25:22either across the side or like a double corner.
01:25:24He'll send both of his outside receivers to the corner.
01:25:27And it's on first down.
01:25:28The ball on the Giants' 18-yard line.
01:25:30Mike Ditka is now the tight end.
01:25:32This will last all work.
01:25:34All work covered by Willie Williams.
01:25:37Brett Grier gave it to Roger Staubach.
01:25:42He sent all work to the corner that time.
01:25:44They have a pattern where they can send both outside receivers to the corner.
01:25:49To the corner would mean they'll go down and fake a down and in
01:25:51or a post move, which is another good quick breaking pattern down here
01:25:55that you see a lot of quarterbacks use in this area to score touchdowns with.
01:26:01But they've got about 19 yards to go in there now.
01:26:04And here's from the blimp again.
01:26:05That blimp's done a heck of a job tonight.
01:26:07They're seeing a fine football game, at least in terms of score.
01:26:09It's all tied up as Staubach goes deep again.
01:26:13And Jennifer Bob Hayes.
01:26:14Apples is there.
01:26:16And I think Staubach is just being very careful with that one.
01:26:21Forty seconds remain in the first half.
01:26:25Greg Larson looking on from the sidelines.
01:26:2761 is Charlie Harper.
01:26:29Larson 53.
01:26:32All right, you'll see Freddie Dryer, number 89, as he comes in.
01:26:34Ralph Neely is blocking on him.
01:26:37And Ralph might have been holding a little bit there.
01:26:40Got a hand in there.
01:26:41Well, it slipped a little bit.
01:26:43Ralph's job actually is to push Freddie as far back as he can.
01:26:46Roger can step up maybe one more step and get in there.
01:26:48But they're trying to get him out.
01:26:49Alex is, I'm sure, a little bit anxious right now.
01:26:53Third down.
01:26:54He knows that his team can hold him.
01:26:55They'll have to settle for a field goal.
01:26:59Third and 10.
01:27:03Staubach.
01:27:04Now he'll scramble.
01:27:07Staubach moving for Yardage for the first down.
01:27:1331 seconds indicated on the clock.
01:27:17Joe Green, a fifth Staubach.
01:27:20But he's moved inside the Giants' 10.
01:27:22And the Cowboys will call timeout again.
01:27:26Ditka working over the middle.
01:27:28We'll see it again.
01:27:29Staubach comes back.
01:27:30He starts moving right off.
01:27:32He started to throw to Ditka, who was open.
01:27:34Guess he decided he was going to run.
01:27:36Yeah, he decided he was going to run.
01:27:39So it's now timeout.
01:27:4431 seconds to go.
01:27:47I imagine Ditka's telling him, he says, hey, Roger,
01:27:50I was right there in the middle.
01:27:52Roger said, yeah.
01:27:54But I wanted to run a little bit.
01:27:57And there's Morton, you can see in the background,
01:27:59talking to Coach Landry.
01:28:01I don't know why he's talking to Morton right now.
01:28:05Actually, he's talking to Staubach.
01:28:07Craig's just peeping over the shoulder there,
01:28:09hearing what he's got to say.
01:28:11You know, it's interesting, on the other side of the field,
01:28:13Jim Files is just coming back to the top.
01:28:18We're having some audio problems.
01:28:20They've all came from the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas.
01:28:22We're going to attempt to clear them up as soon as possible.
01:28:26A little bit redundant.
01:28:27I know that Coach Landry feels that it's so important to push a team in
01:28:31when you get down here.
01:28:33And I know, especially right before the half,
01:28:35it would be very good to go in with a touchdown rather than a field goal.
01:28:37But everybody feels that way.
01:28:39I'm sure they've worked on this.
01:28:41They have also a special offense from the 10-yard line in.
01:28:43They have another offense from the 20-yard line in,
01:28:45another offense from the 5-yard line in.
01:28:47So he's now working from his 5- to 10-yard offense.
01:28:51We'll see what he can do.
01:28:53Thirty-one seconds.
01:29:02Halback getting out of bounds, which he had to do.
01:29:05Yep, he sure did.
01:29:07No timeouts remaining for the Cowboys.
01:29:09Ralph Hicks making the stop.
01:29:11Down here you don't have a lot of time to pick secondary receivers,
01:29:14primarily because there's not that much room to do that many different kinds
01:29:17of routes with.
01:29:19But we mentioned again the quick hitting routes,
01:29:21the ones that move to the outside, the ones that move to the inside.
01:29:24You'll see a back come out of the outside.
01:29:27When you work with a tight end, you're going to try to get him
01:29:29right over the middle.
01:29:30A lot of times the good ones, the experienced ones,
01:29:32know how to use that goal post as an aid to their route.
01:29:35They'll run by and try to brush that defensive back off on him.
01:29:38Twenty-four seconds remain.
01:29:40The ball in the 4-yard line.
01:29:41Mike Tipton is back in a tight end.
01:29:43And that's his throwback once, and the ball hits the goal post.
01:29:47He didn't use the goal post, but for the wrong reasons.
01:29:50At least you had it in the play.
01:29:52I knew that goal post was going to figure in here somewhere.
01:29:56But he was going to Ditka.
01:29:58Ditka did come back across, and Ditka did use that goal post,
01:30:01and so did Roger.
01:30:03Out will come Ditka, and in will come Billy Truax.
01:30:07Watch Ditka this time as he comes back.
01:30:09As we mentioned, number 89 comes through.
01:30:11He'll breeze right by that goal post.
01:30:15And he is open there, and the ball hits the goal post bar.
01:30:22Third down from the 4.
01:30:25Truax is tight end now.
01:30:26Over the middle to Billy Truax.
01:30:29That's it.
01:30:30That's the same pattern.
01:30:31He didn't go through.
01:30:32He just turned around and stopped.
01:30:34Never going to make that work.
01:30:35Yep.
01:30:36Not a boy, Roger.
01:30:39Roger Staubach connecting with Billy Truax from the 4-yard line.
01:30:4717 seconds remain.
01:30:4917 seconds here in the cotton bowl.
01:30:53Boy, he drilled that in there.
01:30:54He did for a fact.
01:30:57Joe Green at position.
01:30:59I'll point out that Joe Green is 5'11".
01:31:02The tight safety for the Giants, Billy Truax is 6'5".
01:31:08Truax weighs 240, and Green weighs 195.
01:31:13Is he that big?
01:31:15Just about, as Mike Clark drills it through the center.
01:31:19That's our situation as 17 seconds remain to be played in the first half.
01:31:25You know, this Saturday on ABC's Wide World of Sports,
01:31:28PBA National Bowling Championship live from Paramus, New Jersey.
01:31:32The nation's outstanding bowlers compete for $85,000 in prize money.
01:31:36And one of the most prestigious events on the Bowler's Tour.
01:31:39That's this Saturday on ABC's Wide World of Sports at 2.30 Eastern,
01:31:441.30 Central, and 4.30 Pacific Time.
01:31:50Deep for the Giants.
01:31:5141 is Willie Williams.
01:31:5328 is Bobby Duhan.
01:31:55They have moved up, anticipating a short kick on the part of Mike Clark.
01:31:59Cowboys moving 66 yards in 10 plays,
01:32:04dominated by a 4-yard touchdown pass Roger Staubach to Billy Truax.
01:32:10They're out in front 13 to 6.
01:32:13We've had some zany football here in the first half.
01:32:23Rocky Thompson.
01:32:25They still got the ball to the wrong man.
01:32:28Thompson up to the 40-yard line as the clock moves with 9 seconds on it.
01:32:33Charlie Waters, number 41, makes the stop for the Cowboys.
01:32:42That's what the Giants have on the scoreboard.
01:32:46And they'll call timeout.
01:32:47Obviously they intend to use this down to try and get on the scoreboard.
01:32:54Tarkenton will now move across the field.
01:32:55We'll see Tarkenton in pairing with head coach Alex Webster and offensive coach Jim Garrett,
01:33:01much as Roger Staubach visited with Tom Landry a while ago.
01:33:05And across the field from Tarkenton, Leroy Jordan, the defensive captain,
01:33:09gets the word from Ernie Stopman, the defensive coach of the Dallas Cowboys.
01:33:16The teams prepare to play one another.
01:33:18Some folks may not be aware of their training films.
01:33:20The training films are broken up into offensive reels, defensive reels,
01:33:24and kicking reels.
01:33:25There's also occasions where you'll have a reel that's just exclusively in a 2-minute period.
01:33:32What kind of patterns do they run in this 2-minute period?
01:33:35So these teams have played one another enough that they do have a general feeling
01:33:39of what the other team will do in a situation like this.
01:33:42So that's one of the reasons to check with the coach.
01:33:44Say, OK, I've got this down.
01:33:45Yep, I remember they did that right.
01:33:47OK, they come out of this formation and we'll expect this.
01:33:50So let's see what they do.
01:33:51Oh, they got a brand new one here.
01:33:55I'm telling you, I'm telling you.
01:33:57All four receivers on the wide side and almost picked up.
01:34:01D.D. Lewis, number 50, almost gets his hands on the football.
01:34:05Three seconds now remain to be played.
01:34:07I'll tell you.
01:34:08Did they have an offensive line out there, too?
01:34:10I think Willie Williams.
01:34:11Well, they had to have.
01:34:12One of them had to be a tackle.
01:34:13Yeah, Willie Young was out there, I think.
01:34:15Well, we didn't have that one in the computer for this week.
01:34:18I don't know what they're going to do.
01:34:20It worked out all right.
01:34:23Three seconds remain.
01:34:29Speed and Clifton McNeil and Rich Houston.
01:34:32Should he decide to try and score for the touchdown, that would be the only chance they have to go.
01:34:39After a near miss like that, he might decide just to run the clock out.
01:34:44Duhan, Morrison, the setbacks.
01:34:48Morrison will kill the clock.
01:34:53Morrison, stopped by Pat Toumet as the gun sounds.
01:34:57And that's the end of the first half with the score, the Cowboys 13, the Giants 6.
