00:00:00We're going to find out today because he's going against the baddest Texan of them all,
00:00:08Harvey Martin.
00:00:09Yes, Harvey Martin has 20 sacks this year, only two less than the club record held by
00:00:13George Andre of 22.
00:00:15So Harvey Martin and Stan Walters will be a great feature today.
00:00:18The Cowboys on their way, 11 out of 12 times going into the playoffs, a victory today ensures
00:00:23the home field advantage.
00:00:24And once again, it'll be in the capable right armor, Roger Staubach.
00:00:27Well, frankly, Roger has not looked good the last three weeks.
00:00:29He's had various injuries, a sprained thumb and a bad hip, but he is all together well
00:00:34today.
00:00:35There's no excuses there.
00:00:36Well, those are just some of the principles in today's little drama from Texas.
00:00:39Right now, let's go down to the field.
00:00:41And I'll say that Roger Staubach is quite well, but that's about all I can say because
00:00:45the Cowboys are a banged up, beaten, battered team, and they're coming in here today with
00:00:48several key injuries.
00:00:50Fitzgerald may or may not start at center, in which case they'd put Burton Lawless, the
00:00:53guard, move rapidly over to the center spot.
00:00:55Randy Hughes will not play at all.
00:00:58Well, down on the field, the Eagles have already lost the toys, so they will be kicking off.
00:01:04And Butch Johnson, along with Larry Brinson, are deep inside the five-yard line for Dallas.
00:01:09The Cowboys coming in with a record of nine and two, and they hold an overwhelming record.
00:01:15They're 22 and 12 in games with the Eagles, and the Eagles have not won down here since
00:01:211967.
00:01:22So, the Philadelphia Eagles with a record of three and eight against the Dallas Cowboys'
00:01:27nine and two.
00:01:29And we're waiting now for the moment before the ball is kicked and we get this underway.
00:01:36The newest member of the club, Nick McAmire, is ready and kicks it off, and here we go.
00:01:42The ball will be fielded on the five-yard line by Butch Johnson.
00:01:45He's out to the 25, to the 30, to the 35, and to the 42-yard line before he is kicked
00:01:52and belted down at the last minute by Wilbert Montgomery.
00:01:55What a player, Butch Johnson.
00:01:58He's been good for the Cowboys all year, returning putts and kickoffs.
00:02:03Also a very capable receiver.
00:02:05Butch ranks high in the kickoff return leaders around the National Football League.
00:02:09Watch him.
00:02:10He's a physical receiver.
00:02:11Johnson, who averages 22 yards per kickoff return, almost double that figure as he runs
00:02:18the ball out to the 42-yard line of Dallas.
00:02:20Dorsett in the backfield with Robert Newhouse.
00:02:23The backs are split.
00:02:24First and ten on the Cowboy 42.
00:02:26In motion is Drew Pearson.
00:02:28Dorsett runs right into Charlie Johnson.
00:02:31And number 65, Charlie Johnson of the Philadelphia Eagles, will be carrying a big load today.
00:02:35Well, when you're going to use that three-man front, you've got to have a great man on the
00:02:39center's nose, and they think Charlie Johnson's going to be just that.
00:02:41He's been awfully quick, and the Cowboys respect him, I'll tell you that.
00:02:45There was a question as to whether Fitzgerald would be snapping John Fitzgerald, and he
00:02:49is.
00:02:50He's got a bad knee, but he is starting for the Cowboys.
00:02:52Staubach, Pearson, and Dupre, along with Golden Richards.
00:02:56There are the boys up front, Neely Scott, and it is not Rafferty now, it is John Fitzgerald.
00:03:01There goes Robert Newhouse, and again, Charlie Johnson wraps him up.
00:03:05Johnson is a rookie out of Colorado, although he spent two years in the Army and had a tour
00:03:11in Vietnam.
00:03:13That rookie designation does not mean he is still wet behind the ears.
00:03:16He is anything but.
00:03:19Now Mihalik comes out as they're looking past, and Martin Mitchell comes in to the defensive
00:03:23secondary for Philadelphia.
00:03:28The Cowboys got a great return out of Butch Johnson to the 42-yard line.
00:03:32They have moved it to the 47-yard line, so it is third and five.
00:03:37And out of the shotgun, Staubach.
00:03:42Only Preston Pearson loose, and they'll dump it off to Pearson behind a screen at midfield.
00:03:47He's to the 35, to the 30, and grabbed at the 25.
00:03:52Frank Lomaster got him from behind.
00:03:54He's down to the 22, first and ten, Dallas.
00:03:57As you know, they put Preston Pearson in the game in passing situation.
00:04:00He has only carried the ball from scrimmage one time in the last two games, but he's so effective
00:04:05coming out of that backfield.
00:04:06Such an intelligent football player, receiving and running the ball, and watch how he follows
00:04:11his blocks here.
00:04:12Never leaving his friends.
00:04:14He stays there.
00:04:16Behind Rafferty, makes his cut there.
00:04:18Look how he follows his blockers, Ben.
00:04:20A marvelous play.
00:04:21Typical Dallas execution as they move the ball to the Philadelphia 23-yard line.
00:04:27First and ten, Cowboys.
00:04:29Drew Pearson is wide left, and Tony Dorsett is the deep man out of the eye.
00:04:34And Dorsett, with Rafferty pulling for him, he cannot turn the corner, and he is knocked
00:04:39out of bounds at the last moment by number 46, Herman Edwards.
00:04:46So Tom Rafferty pulled and tried to lead the way, but there were too many Eagles.
00:04:50However, he has moved the ball inside the 20 to the 17-yard line.
00:04:55What a year.
00:04:56Almost a certain rookie of the year in Tony Dorsett.
00:05:00Dorsett's numbers are overwhelming.
00:05:01Go ahead.
00:05:02Well, I was just going to say, he's second to Peyton in touchdowns.
00:05:05Walter has 11, and Dorsett with nine.
00:05:07And you know how many more times that Peyton carries a ball than Dorsett.
00:05:11Exactly.
00:05:12So Drew Pearson is wide left, Dorsett and Newhouse behind Staubach.
00:05:19Play action Peyton to Newhouse, down the left side, and he overthrew his man Tony Dorsett,
00:05:25who was wide open.
00:05:26That Drew Mahalik beating that time, he just overthrew it just a shade.
00:05:33Cowboys coming out throwing it.
00:05:35That play action Peyton to Robert Newhouse really froze the middle of the Philadelphia
00:05:40ball club, and it's from Dorsett and Staubach a little early and perhaps not quite warmed
00:05:45up enough, overthrows his man.
00:05:47Well, I'll tell you, the Dallas coaching staff have a lot of respect for the Philadelphia
00:05:50team.
00:05:51They really do.
00:05:52And they also paid one of the nicest tributes to Dick Vermeule that you want to hear.
00:05:55They just said the strongest thing about their team is their coaching.
00:05:59Third and five for the Cowboys.
00:06:04Pearson the back's a split.
00:06:05We'll see it's a passing formation, and Pearson goes out, a double pump, and hits his tight
00:06:11end to Cray to the one-yard line.
00:06:14Brought down by Randy Logan.
00:06:16It was too much time that time.
00:06:19Roger Staubach had time to look over the field.
00:06:22He didn't go to his primary receiver.
00:06:24He had to go to a secondary receiver, which is Drew Pearson.
00:06:27Had plenty of time to look over the field.
00:06:28Watch.
00:06:29He's trying to hit somebody out of the backfield.
00:06:31Looking to his right.
00:06:33Can't find him open.
00:06:34Then he spots him again.
00:06:35Too much time to give a guy like Roger Staubach and hit him right in the numbers.
00:06:39Randy Hughes brings him down just short of the goal line.
00:06:42So they'll spot the ball just inside the two-yard line where it's first and goal.
00:06:47Dupree and Salty are the tight ends.
00:06:49Dorsett and Newhouse the backs behind Staubach.
00:06:52First and goal from the two.
00:06:55Dorsett.
00:06:57And he goes blasting through for the touchdown.
00:07:00His tenth touchdown rushing of the year.
00:07:04Working right up the middle.
00:07:06Look at the acceleration that Dorsett.
00:07:08He's there.
00:07:09All you have to do is shade your blocker.
00:07:10Just give him a little bit of room like that with the acceleration he's got.
00:07:13Watch.
00:07:14There's really not a gaping hole there at all.
00:07:16Look how quickly he hits it.
00:07:18Behind the block there, Herbert Scott.
00:07:21And right on in.
00:07:22Graciously.
00:07:24The typical blackboard execution by the Dallas Cowboys and their fans love it.
00:07:29And now Efren Herrera, who is 28 out of 30 in points, kicks it up and it's good.
00:07:35And just like that, the Cowboys have issued the word to Philadelphia,
00:07:38if you're going to upset us, you're going to have to do it the hard way.
00:07:42The Cowboys early going, 11.51 to go in the first quarter.
00:07:46Cowboys 7, the Philadelphia Eagles nothing.
00:07:50You're looking at the open top of the roof of Texas Stadium.
00:07:54Folks down here feel the weather is an integral part of football
00:07:57and consequently the area directly above the playing field is open to the element,
00:08:01which is one reason why we have trouble with sunlight and shadows,
00:08:05even though it would appear as if the ballpark is totally enclosed, it is anything but.
00:08:10Efren Herrera out of Guadalajara in a little town La Experiencia.
00:08:15Ready to kick it off.
00:08:19And Herrera squirts one, almost like a runaway gyroscope,
00:08:22fielded on the 10-yard line by Larry Mitchell,
00:08:25who's playing with a broken nose and goes across the 30 to the 32.
00:08:29By the way, there's telecast presented by authority of the National Football League
00:08:33intended for the private use of our audience.
00:08:35Any rebroadcast or other use of the telecast without the express written consent
00:08:39of the Dallas Cowboys and the National Football League is prohibited.
00:08:42So Larry Marshall brings it out to the 32-yard line and the Eagles will put it in play,
00:08:46first and 10.
00:08:47After we just saw the Cowboys go 58 yards for a touchdown
00:08:51with Tony Dorsett punching over from inside the 2.
00:08:55Ron Jaworski has Smith wide right, Carmichael wide left.
00:09:00His running backs are Sullivan and Hogan.
00:09:02Sullivan is the deep man out of the eye.
00:09:05In motion comes Krepley, the tight end,
00:09:07and it'll be Sullivan gang tackled right at the line of scrimmage
00:09:11by Jones and Martin and Henderson.
00:09:15A little pew in there as well.
00:09:16I would not be a bit surprised if Philadelphia gives up on their running attack
00:09:20because there's no reason for them to have much faith in it.
00:09:22They're rushing for less than 100 yards per game
00:09:24and that's not enough to go anywhere in the National Football League.
00:09:27It's a good Dallas defense.
00:09:28I think they're number three in total defense.
00:09:30They play the run awfully well.
00:09:32The Eagles have scored 162 and they have allowed 169
00:09:37to give you an idea of how many close games they've been in.
00:09:40Second and 10.
00:09:42Hogan and Sullivan, back of Jaworski.
00:09:45Jaworski looking left and going deep and overthrows his man, Charlie Smith.
00:09:51The wide receiver, Aaron Kyle, was right there defending.
00:09:54And so this game, the Cowboys asserted themselves with a touchdown.
00:09:58They have the Eagles down 7-0 and they have stopped them on the first two plays.
00:10:02Here's the Eagle offense with Ron Jaworski at the wheel.
00:10:06Sullivan and Hogan as running backs.
00:10:08The men who figure to handle the ball when Jaworski passes,
00:10:11big Harold Carmichael along with Charlie Smith and the tight end, Keith Preple.
00:10:15Preple up front will be Walters Key, Morris Sizemore, and George.
00:10:20So from the 32, it is third and 10.
00:10:23Early in the first quarter, 7-0 Dallas.
00:10:26A slot right with Smith inside Carmichael.
00:10:34And Jaworski going out to the right side off the hands of Harold Carmichael.
00:10:39That would have been a first down had Carmichael been able to hold on to it.
00:10:43And you know it's not when you overthrow that dude.
00:10:45He has caught a pass, at least one, in 77 consecutive games.
00:10:50And he comes in here having caught six touchdown passes,
00:10:53but that one a little too much out of his reach.
00:10:56For what it's worth, the record for the Eagles is 80,
00:10:58and that's held by Tommy McDonald at 80 straight games.
00:11:01There's the putter, Spike Jones.
00:11:05He's had two blocks this year, and he's averaged a little more than 37 yards a punt.
00:11:10But Spike will be kicking from his own 20.
00:11:15Benny Barnes is picked up, and he just does get the punt away.
00:11:19Fair catch by Butch Johnson, and he makes the catch inside his 25-yard line.
00:11:24Good coverage there. Vince Popali was right down his throat.
00:11:28Had he not called for a fair catch, Popali would have really lowered the boon.
00:11:31We've got 10.49 to go in the first quarter.
00:11:347-0, the Dallas Cowboys.
00:11:37The fans are happy. They're leading 7-0.
00:11:40That was a fine punt by Spike Jones.
00:11:42That covered 45 yards, no return.
00:11:45Staubach puts it in play, first and 10 from his own 24.
00:11:48Drew Pearson is wide right, Golden Richards wide left,
00:11:51and it's Robert Newhouse.
00:11:52Got away from LeMaster and got out to the 31.
00:11:56So LeMaster had him at the line of scrimmage and couldn't hold him,
00:11:59and Newhouse barrels forward.
00:12:01Bobby Newhouse having one of his better years.
00:12:03He's been around, I guess, about six years.
00:12:05His second year was outstanding.
00:12:06He rushed for about 950-some yards,
00:12:08but this year has been, by far, the best since then.
00:12:11So Robert Newhouse picks up a strong 7 on that carry.
00:12:16That makes it 2nd and 3 for the Cowboys
00:12:19as they advance the ball to their own 31-yard line.
00:12:22Roger Staubach now becomes the oldest playing quarterback
00:12:27with Tarkington injured and Kilmer not playing.
00:12:30Staubach at 35 is the senior citizen.
00:12:32Dorsett picks up the first down easily as he gets out to the 40-yard line.
00:12:38I will say easily.
00:12:39Big hole there for Herbert Scott and John Fitzgerald on that left side.
00:12:43Let's watch Bill Berge here.
00:12:46Number 66.
00:12:50Taking on the blocker well, but Newhouse goes right outside,
00:12:52follows his blocker well.
00:12:53Dupree's staying with his man well.
00:12:55Berge with the persistence that makes him an all-pro player.
00:12:58They gave up an awful lot for him, but he's an awful lot of football player.
00:13:01And there are a lot of awful good football players down on that field.
00:13:041st and 10 from the 40-yard line for Dallas.
00:13:09Pearson is right.
00:13:10Richards is left.
00:13:12Staubach play action fake to Dorsett.
00:13:14He's going to crank it up and then throw short to Newhouse and fumble,
00:13:18but then dropped on top, and there will be no completion.
00:13:21He had no possession.
00:13:22Right on his back was Mihalic.
00:13:24The strength of that Philadelphia defense is in their linebackers.
00:13:27The reason they play a three-man front and four linebackers is because
00:13:30they've got four capable athletes.
00:13:32They don't have over three defensive linemen that they consider first rate.
00:13:35They went to it not out of choice but out of necessity.
00:13:38Drew Mihalic right on the spot.
00:13:41The Eagles threw up a pretty good zone defense on that,
00:13:45and Staubach finally tried to jump off to the shortest man,
00:13:48but it was incomplete to Newhouse.
00:13:49Newhouse, 2nd and 10 from the 40.
00:13:55That's Dupre, the tight end in motion to the right.
00:13:58And this time it's Dorsett,
00:14:00and he got a good block from Robert Newhouse on Mihalic,
00:14:03and that moved the ball shy of the 50-yard line.
00:14:06Oh, and those Dallas Cowboys are attacking that left side.
00:14:09They're running off the blocks of Ralph Neely, Herb Scott.
00:14:12Whether they're running at any particular person or not,
00:14:14well, we'll see as the game develops.
00:14:15But they're having some success,
00:14:16and there's a guy you don't want to give too much daylight to, Tony Dorsett.
00:14:21So Roger Staubach, who is 2 for 4,
00:14:24and set it all up for that 2-yard bust by Tony Dorsett for a touchdown,
00:14:28is now trying to control another drive.
00:14:31It is 3rd and about 2 to go for the Cowboys.
00:14:34The ball on the Cowboy, 48.
00:14:38It'll be Robert Newhouse, and he's got his first down.
00:14:42And Dorsett threw a block for him,
00:14:44but Newhouse with those powerful legs just turned away.
00:14:47Right now, the Dallas Cowboys are controlling that line of scrimmage.
00:14:51Watch how they move out there on that right side.
00:14:53Pat Donovan throwing a key block here.
00:14:55See number 64, Tom Rafferty, pulling.
00:14:58But look, they've already knocked him off the ball for a couple yards.
00:15:04So the Cowboys on the move.
00:15:05They already went 58 yards for a touchdown.
00:15:08Now they're moving again from their own 24-yard line
00:15:11or in Philadelphia territory at the 48.
00:15:13First and 10.
00:15:17And it's Robert Newhouse, and again, finding a big hole.
00:15:20And he just had Charlie Johnson on his back,
00:15:23and he threw a big Charlie to the 41-yard line.
00:15:26You might bring out that around the league,
00:15:28John Fitzgerald has been recognized as one of the top centers with a man on his head,
00:15:32but a lot of people with his injured leg didn't think he would do as well
00:15:35as he's obviously done against Charlie Johnson this early in the game.
00:15:38Well, a big dogfight.
00:15:40The Denver Broncos coming in at Houston, as you can see, 7-7 in the second quarter.
00:15:45It was a big date for Dallas and Denver later on this year.
00:15:48Second and three from the 41-yard line.
00:15:51Richards is left and Drew Pearson right.
00:15:54Pitch back to Dorsett.
00:15:55Good blocking, and there he goes across the 30.
00:15:58Mahalik finally brings him down.
00:16:01Tell me he isn't exciting.
00:16:03He's had one touchdown burst of about 79 yards or 77 yards.
00:16:07He did that ballgame.
00:16:08I don't remember whether it was against the Giants or who.
00:16:10It was St. Louis.
00:16:11Charlie Johnson is going to get hurt on this play.
00:16:14There he is.
00:16:15That's number 65, Charlie Johnson.
00:16:17Let's see what he comes from.
00:16:19Good pursuit, though, and good speed.
00:16:20I got it playing on the center's head, but can't catch me.
00:16:22There it is.
00:16:23Nearly coming in low.
00:16:28A lot of good tackles, but they're too far down the field.
00:16:32Tony Dorsett was shaken up on the play.
00:16:34Charlie Johnson is still flat on his back after taking that severe lick from
00:16:38Ralph Neely.
00:16:40Though, for the moment at least, we have a couple of players healing here in
00:16:43Dallas.
00:16:44We have 7 minutes and 16 seconds left to go in the first quarter.
00:16:47The Cowboys 7 and the Eagles nothing.
00:16:50I'm Reggie Jackson, and I'll be appearing with Ned Beatty and Olivia Cole on
00:16:54the return of the hit summer show Shiznick.
00:16:56I mean Shiznick.
00:16:57It's Shiznick, premiering Wednesday, December 7th after good times.
00:17:03Well, there are the two players who are involved.
00:17:05Tony Dorsett on his feet and evidently okay to the right of your picture, and
00:17:09we'll see the play that wiped out Charlie Johnson.
00:17:12And Charlie is the strongest man on the Eagles squad.
00:17:15He bench presses something like 400 pounds.
00:17:18Now, he gets a hand on Dorsett, but here's Ralph Neely in the right-hand
00:17:22corner just wiped him out, and he looks like he's going to be out for the rest
00:17:25of the game.
00:17:27I hate to see it.
00:17:28I hate to see it.
00:17:30First and 10 from the Philadelphia 28-yard line.
00:17:33And Staubach has him moving again.
00:17:35Robert Newhouse behind Herbert Scott's block, and he spins out of bounds.
00:17:40Scott throwing a block on John Bunting, the linebacker on the left side.
00:17:44Franklin Masters, they're doing a good job.
00:17:46Newhouse probably should have turned it up a field that time rather than go
00:17:48outside.
00:17:49I think he got a little more mileage out of it.
00:17:51Good pursuit there by Franklin Masters.
00:17:53The report from the Dallas bench that Dorsett had the wind knocked out of him.
00:17:58He's okay.
00:17:59He's back in the lineup right now.
00:18:00That is an artificial playing surface down there, and they can get hard.
00:18:04Second and 7.
00:18:05The ball on the Eagle almost on the 25-yard line with 6.54 to go in the first
00:18:10period, and the Cowboys have already asserted themselves.
00:18:13They lead 7-0.
00:18:16Robert Newhouse shy of the 20-yard line, and he was just following Ralph Neely
00:18:22to get there.
00:18:26The Cowboys in very strong command.
00:18:29Last week, you remember, Washington gave them fits in the first half, and in the
00:18:34first meeting between these two teams, the Eagles actually led the Cowboys 7-6
00:18:39in the fourth quarter, and they are not about to let that happen this time.
00:18:42No, so the only thing that turned that game around is Charlie Waters blocked the
00:18:45punt, turned that whole game around.
00:18:47They advance the ball to the 21-yard line.
00:18:49The drive started on the Dallas 24.
00:18:54The 3rd and 3.
00:18:56Richard's wide left.
00:18:57Drew Pearson wide right.
00:19:00Starbuck on a 3rd and 3 is going to send it up.
00:19:03Rushed by Hairston and sacked by Hairston.
00:19:06A big play by number 78, Carl Hairston, who leads the Eagles in sacks with 8.5.
00:19:13Now that's 9.5.
00:19:15He has been a pleasant surprise for them.
00:19:17They got him in about the 7th round draft pick.
00:19:19As you know, the Eagles haven't had any draft picks.
00:19:21They've been away for about the last 2 or 3 years.
00:19:23I think next year they have a number 1.
00:19:25They have been pleased with this boy.
00:19:27That is the 39th sack by the Eagles this year.
00:19:31The Cowboys have 44.
00:19:33Big play by Carl Hairston, and that throws a monkey wrench into that Dallas machine
00:19:37that appeared to be on the move.
00:19:39So they run out of gas on the 36, thanks to the sack.
00:19:42And now Danny White, who has been bothered by a groin pull.
00:19:46Nevertheless, Danny is back.
00:19:47He's averaging just under 40 yards a punt, and he has kicked 20 out inside the 20.
00:19:53Keep in mind, he is a quarterback and can throw from that formation.
00:19:56Larry Marshall and Wally Henry are twin safety men
00:19:59but hold everything a flag on the play.
00:20:04It would seem to be too much time to get the play off.
00:20:09That shouldn't affect his punt at all.
00:20:10In fact, it might help him get it out
00:20:12because when you're kicking from as close as they are,
00:20:14it's easy to put that ball in something.
00:20:17So from the 36, he'll kick from the 41.
00:20:21And Danny White will now be standing about his own 42-yard line.
00:20:26And again, going back, and this time they might get a shot at the ball.
00:20:29Larry Marshall, number 22, playing with a broken nose, and Wally Henry.
00:20:35And the kick going to Henry's side of the field,
00:20:37and this one is going to go out of bounds and let's see if they mark it.
00:20:43They will mark it on the 8-yard line of Philadelphia.
00:20:46Nailed it. Nailed it down.
00:20:48Danny White, out of Arizona State, kicks a dandy.
00:20:52And so the Eagles have a long way to go after that 33-yard punt
00:20:56and the Cowboys leading 7-0.
00:20:59Not all a game of pom-poms and cheerleaders.
00:21:02There's another side of the coin,
00:21:03Charlie Johnson with a bad left knee out of the game.
00:21:08From the 8-yard line, the Eagles now,
00:21:10Tom Jaworski with Sullivan and Hogan.
00:21:13This time it's Herb Lusk carrying out across the 10- to the 12-yard line.
00:21:17So Herb Lusk, who is the backup to Tom Sullivan
00:21:20and has been playing with a bruised hip,
00:21:22Lusk carrying his first carry of the day.
00:21:24He had a 70-yard run from scrimmage.
00:21:27That's the longest of any of the Eagles.
00:21:29And after that, it goes way down.
00:21:30I think the next longest run is something like 17 yards,
00:21:33so that speaks for their running game.
00:21:34They really don't have that strong a running game.
00:21:36There's Roger Staubach, the extension of the coaches,
00:21:38Tom Landry's philosophy of things, rather.
00:21:40His leader on the field.
00:21:42From the 12.
00:21:47Uh-oh, the tight end.
00:21:49Prepley started a move.
00:21:50Then the other side of the line started a move.
00:21:52And by the time Herb Lusk gets the move, why, he's stacked up.
00:21:56Tremendous discipline by the Dallas Cowboys
00:21:59with all that movement in the Philadelphia line.
00:22:02That's right.
00:22:03And that's what Tom Landry stands for.
00:22:06Total discipline.
00:22:07We've got the safety blitz on.
00:22:08Cliff Ayers, number 43, there.
00:22:12Had a two-man blitz in that time,
00:22:13which you'll often see on a safety blitz.
00:22:15I'll bet it's that middle linebacker, Bob Bruning,
00:22:16who is also coming.
00:22:18Keith Prepley, the tight end,
00:22:19was just able to stay down in his stance.
00:22:22He started to come up,
00:22:23and the other side of the line started to come up.
00:22:25And meanwhile, Dallas quivered but held round
00:22:28and then smothered the carriers.
00:22:29So it is still third and sixth of all on the 12.
00:22:34Luskin Hogan, the running back,
00:22:35Smith in motion to the right.
00:22:38Jaworski throwing left to Carmichael.
00:22:40Gets a little bit of a block by Wade Key,
00:22:43and that block might be a clip.
00:22:45Wade Key came over to clear the way
00:22:48and might very well have hit his man from behind.
00:22:50There's a flag down, and we have to assume
00:22:52it was a clip against the Eagles.
00:22:56Personal foul.
00:22:58Clipping number 72.
00:23:00Decline.
00:23:01Fourth down.
00:23:03And it was indeed Wade Key.
00:23:05A key to the situation, huh?
00:23:07Yes.
00:23:08There it is.
00:23:09In the first place, I don't believe Carmichael's got
00:23:10the kind of speed to make that play effective.
00:23:12Now, you can do it on the other side with Charlie Smith
00:23:14because he's got a little more speed.
00:23:16But I don't think it's particularly a good call.
00:23:19So, Spike Jones, who punted for 45 yards
00:23:21his last time, now kicking from the shadow
00:23:23of the goal post.
00:23:25Coming in is Benny Barnes, and he's got a piece of it.
00:23:28Barnes blocks the punt, and it goes out of bounds
00:23:31inside the 30.
00:23:33That is the third punt that Spike Jones
00:23:36has had blocked this year,
00:23:38and Martin, Benny Barnes was just all alone.
00:23:42And he's got a piece of it.
00:23:45Nobody picked him up that time.
00:23:47And the great speed of Barnes.
00:23:48Look at him on the left side.
00:23:50They can't quite get to him, and now he turns it on.
00:23:52Just sheer speed.
00:23:53He's got plenty of it.
00:23:55Look how he goes across that.
00:23:56Perfect position to get it.
00:23:58And, once again, in the previous game,
00:24:01a blocked punt turned that game around for him.
00:24:05So, technically, Benny Barnes smothers
00:24:08what turns out to be a 50-yard line.
00:24:10So, technically, Benny Barnes smothers
00:24:13what turns out to be a 15-yard punt.
00:24:15And the Cowboys, first and 10,
00:24:17on the Eagle 28-yard line.
00:24:20And hold everything, everybody in motion.
00:24:22You talk about student body right,
00:24:24Jay Salty was leading a men's choir
00:24:26going in that direction.
00:24:29False start, number 68, offense.
00:24:33So, among others, you had Herb Scott, number 68,
00:24:36pulling, and there goes Salty in motion.
00:24:38And Scott tried to get back and couldn't do it.
00:24:40Ain't no use running if you're on the wrong road.
00:24:43What's that thing about we're lost,
00:24:45but we're making good time?
00:24:48All right, first and 15.
00:24:50The ball moved back to the Eagle 33-yard line.
00:24:53The Cowboys leading the Eagles 7-0.
00:24:55Four minutes and three seconds to go in the first quarter.
00:24:58And the Cowboys have really thrown a lariat around this one,
00:25:01at least the early moments in the game.
00:25:05In motion goes Salty.
00:25:06Now plants on the right side.
00:25:09Pitch back to Dorsett.
00:25:11He gets away from Randy Logan.
00:25:13Hairston doesn't get him,
00:25:15but Logan comes back to make the catch.
00:25:17So Logan, second time around, gets Dorsett.
00:25:20One of the strong points of that 3-4 defense
00:25:22is the pursuit, that extra linebacker giving you pursuit.
00:25:24And there's a great example of it right there.
00:25:26The master was out in good shape,
00:25:28about time to turn it up.
00:25:29Dorsett sees him, gets away from Logan.
00:25:31Logan, one of the better safeties around.
00:25:33He really does a good job for him.
00:25:35He's always a strong safety.
00:25:36That's the reason you see the Dallas Bears shift.
00:25:38He doesn't give up on a mistack.
00:25:40He comes back and makes it.
00:25:42So Randy Logan brings him down at the 36-yard line.
00:25:45We're at second down and 18 to go for Staubach and the Cowboys.
00:25:48And Roger trying to take a lot.
00:25:50Dumps it to Dorsett.
00:25:51Chased by Mihalik and caught from behind.
00:25:54Drew Mihalik making a fine recovery to get Dorsett.
00:25:58Mihalik showing great speed that time.
00:26:00Dorsett, he's full speed in two strides.
00:26:03That's what most of the great backs really are.
00:26:05There's a great difference between the good backs and the great ones.
00:26:07This guy's got all the tools in the world to be one of the great ones.
00:26:10But look at Mihalik.
00:26:12Good speed.
00:26:16There's Anthony.
00:26:17I'm going to look at it from another angle.
00:26:19And look.
00:26:21Yes, he's got acceleration, but not that kind.
00:26:23Not with a good speed behind him.
00:26:25So Mihalik drops him at the 35-yard line.
00:26:28We're at third and 17.
00:26:29Mitchell is in.
00:26:30And Mihalik goes out as Roger loads up the shotgun.
00:26:36Dorsett staying in to block.
00:26:39Chasing him is Burnham.
00:26:42And he throws it out of bounds.
00:26:44No good.
00:26:45Lem Burnham put tremendous heat on Staubach.
00:26:48And Burnham's whole job is to sack the quarterback.
00:26:51And he made Staubach unloaded out of bounds.
00:26:54Good play by Lem Burnham.
00:26:56He's a pretty old rookie, isn't he?
00:26:5725 or 26 years.
00:26:59Number 67 spent two years in the World Football League in Hawaii
00:27:03and four years in the Marines.
00:27:06Before coming here.
00:27:07Worked as a truck driver, I understand.
00:27:09I believe right after high school before he went to college.
00:27:12He did a good job of forcing.
00:27:14Now, wait a second.
00:27:15Is he inbounds or out of bounds on that?
00:27:17Looks like he does a good job of keeping those feet in.
00:27:20It looks like it's close.
00:27:21That left one might be out there.
00:27:23I think the left one was down and the right one was just off the ground
00:27:26as he alternated touching.
00:27:28And so Danny White will be punting from midfield.
00:27:33Larry Marshall, number 22.
00:27:34Wally Henry, number 89.
00:27:36In twin safety for the Eagles.
00:27:38229 to go in the first quarter.
00:27:407 and 0 in Dallas.
00:27:43And this one again goes out of bounds.
00:27:45Deep in Eagle territory to the 6-yard line.
00:27:50So Danny White driving the Eagles crazy.
00:27:53He's pulled out their tail feathers and they can't get off the ground, Hawk.
00:27:58Don't forget, on Saturday, December 17, the CBS Sports Spectacular.
00:28:04The WBC World Welderweight Championship.
00:28:07That'll be Carlos Palomino and Jose Palosios.
00:28:10Palomino, by the way, has knocked out 16 of his 24 wins.
00:28:14There'll be the 1977 National Hot Rod Association World Championship,
00:28:18U.S. Professional Arm Wrestling Championships,
00:28:20and the World's Strongest Men.
00:28:22That's the Sports Spectacular, Saturday, December 17.
00:28:25First and 10 from the 6-yard line for the Eagles.
00:28:28So they haven't had field position at all.
00:28:30Last time they started on the 8.
00:28:33Tim Sullivan looking for daylight through the many there.
00:28:39They've got to come up with some kind of big play to get back in the ballgame.
00:28:42They're certainly not out of it at 7-0 with the field position.
00:28:45Frankly, the Eagles are just not a good enough team to get behind the Cowboys too far
00:28:48and hope to make a game of it.
00:28:50And I thank you, boys.
00:28:51You've got some friends now.
00:28:52Well, you've got friends, haven't you?
00:28:54I've got a lot of friends down in this area.
00:28:55I stay down here a lot.
00:28:58So the Eagles took over on their own 8.
00:29:00Now they take over on their own 6.
00:29:02It is 2nd and 8 from the 8.
00:29:047-0 Dallas.
00:29:06A minute 50 left in the first quarter.
00:29:08In motion goes Krepley, the tight end.
00:29:10Here comes Hogan.
00:29:12And he bangs to the 10, and then he in turn drills.
00:29:19Bob Bruning.
00:29:20Do you believe this New York Giants-St. Louis game?
00:29:24But, you know, the St. Louis Cardinals don't call that one over yet.
00:29:2717-7 New York.
00:29:29Even so, it is still a shock no matter what the Cardinals come up with.
00:29:33Mike Sensenbaugh broke his arm.
00:29:36Leo Nelson is out.
00:29:37Their secondary has really been riddled with injury.
00:29:39They have that.
00:29:403rd and 4 from the 12.
00:29:42A minute and 14 seconds to go in the first quarter.
00:29:457-0 Dallas.
00:29:49Smith in a slot right inside Carmichael.
00:29:53The backs go out, and to Carmichael goes the pass,
00:29:56and he's out of bounds at the 18-yard line.
00:30:00Though they started on the 6, they move it out and pick up the first down,
00:30:06and Jaworski finally gets a little bit of breathing room.
00:30:09Remember, when they started on the 8, he just missed on a pass to Carmichael.
00:30:14He ran off the big wide receiver's fingertip.
00:30:211st and 10 on the Eagle 18.
00:30:28Sullivan and Hogan with Sullivan the deep man.
00:30:36And here comes Sullivan, and he just runs into a gang of people.
00:30:40Charlie Waters came up to hit him, but Bob Bruning was there.
00:30:43Randy White, they're just not going to do it on the ground,
00:30:46and Jaworski no doubt knows it.
00:30:50It's going to be interesting to see how this young man right now works
00:30:53as a quarterback for the Eagles.
00:30:55The Rams more or less gave up on him ever being an outstanding quarterback.
00:30:59They knew he had fair capabilities,
00:31:01but it's going to be interesting to see.
00:31:03The jury's still out on him.
00:31:05He's been sacked 36 times this year, 8 times last week against New England.
00:31:09He broke his thumb against Dallas the first time, and he doesn't miss playing.
00:31:13He's tough.
00:31:18Fake draw to Hogan, and Jaworski looking down the middle,
00:31:21and he's going to overthrow Keith Kepley, the tight end.
00:31:24Had him wide open, too.
00:31:26Overthrew him badly that time.
00:31:29That could have been the play they needed to threaten to score.
00:31:32They've got to get out of their own backyard.
00:31:34Dallas really let down.
00:31:35They took the fake on Hogan.
00:31:37I guess they didn't think Jaworski would throw deep in his own territory.
00:31:40Well, those Dallas Cowboys for years, Tom Landry's theory is,
00:31:43on defense you stop the run first and let the pass worry about itself.
00:31:46They'll read run first before they ever go.
00:31:48It's surprising they have as many sacks as they do,
00:31:50but they lead all football with 44 quarterback sacks,
00:31:53despite the fact they play the run first.
00:31:55To give you an idea, the Eagles have rushed for a grand total of 11 yards so far today,
00:32:00and it is 3rd and 9 from the 19.
00:32:13Jaworski going high left for Carmichael,
00:32:16and he throws it over the head of Carmichael, who is 6 feet 8 inches tall.
00:32:23So Jaworski throws it away.
00:32:25He had a big play to Kepley. That's going to haunt him.
00:32:27Yes, it will, but he has, as you said, he was sacked eight times last week.
00:32:31He's been troubled by having to throw the ball a little faster than he should have.
00:32:34That was a good example right there.
00:32:36He could have waited another split second, but I think he's got a shell shot.
00:32:38You get like that.
00:32:40Spike Jones had a 45-yard punt a little earlier.
00:32:43He'll be kicking from his 5.
00:32:46LeMaster will stay in to pick up anybody,
00:32:49but remember, Benny Barnes blocked Spike's last attempt.
00:32:53Here they come again, but this time Huther's the closest man,
00:32:56and he couldn't get it.
00:32:59Charlie Butch Johnson calling for the fair catch at the 41.
00:33:03Vince Papalle once again making him call for the fair catch.
00:33:06Good coverage for that man.
00:33:09It's a 39-yard punt for Spike Jones, which is a couple of yards over his average.
00:33:14Big crowd sitting quietly here.
00:33:16The weather might have something to do with it.
00:33:18It was cold and rainy earlier this week,
00:33:20but it is absolutely balmy here in Dallas.
00:33:23What a hit for the Beach Green Bay, doesn't it, Ben?
00:33:30We had a glimpse on the pregame show of Green Bay,
00:33:33and it is just about what you expect when you get into December.
00:33:36First and 10 from the 42 for Dallas.
00:33:43Here comes Tony Dorsett.
00:33:45He runs around Mihalik, and there's a clip,
00:33:48and I think Mihalik was the clippee this time.
00:33:51Clippee!
00:33:52Good block there by Bobby Newhouse getting it started.
00:33:55That initial block out of the backfield is so important,
00:33:57and that's primarily why he's in there.
00:33:59When Dorsett is carrying,
00:34:01you will see No. 54 of the Eagles, Drew Mihalik, hit from behind,
00:34:06and the clip was called.
00:34:11Cowboys continue to try that left side.
00:34:13They're offensive left side.
00:34:15For what reason? Well, we'll pick it up in a few minutes.
00:34:18It is interesting, too, because if you talk to coaches,
00:34:21predominantly ball clubs are right-handed.
00:34:24That's right.
00:34:25One of the few exceptions I know is the Oakland Raiders,
00:34:28and I guess it's because Stabler is left-handed.
00:34:31Pretty good idea.
00:34:32And Art Schell and a couple of other guys.
00:34:34Pick up the call now.
00:34:37There you see the clip right there.
00:34:41I think that's Dupree.
00:34:43Yes, that would be Dupree on Mihalik.
00:34:45Just as the quarter runs out,
00:34:47they will spot the ball on the 28
00:34:49when we pick up the second quarter.
00:34:51And so the boys will refresh themselves for a moment
00:34:54and go after him again,
00:34:55with Dallas leading the Philadelphia Eagles
00:34:57at the end of one, 7-0.
00:35:01The Cowboys leading the Eagles 7-0
00:35:03as we start the second quarter.
00:35:05First and 24 from the Cowboy 28-yard line.
00:35:10And motion comes to Dupree.
00:35:13Tony Dorsett.
00:35:15The wide open drag down by LeMaster at the 40-yard line,
00:35:19and it points up a big difference in the first quarter.
00:35:22Philadelphia rushed for a total of 11 yards.
00:35:26Dallas for 64.
00:35:2829 by Dorsett, 35 by Newhouse.
00:35:30Watch the blocker number 73, Ralph.
00:35:32See if we can see it.
00:35:33He did a number on Carl Harriston that time.
00:35:35Moving completely off the ball.
00:35:37Big hole, as you see.
00:35:39Number 73 there.
00:35:41The replacement for Charlie Johnson is Pete Lasikich.
00:35:45And LeMaster in it again.
00:35:46I think they're working away from Bergey every chance they get.
00:35:49And it's working for them.
00:35:50Second and 12 from the 40-yard line.
00:35:53And motion comes to Dupree.
00:35:58A play-action fake to Newhouse,
00:36:00and then they dump it off to Newhouse.
00:36:02He has Rafferty out in front
00:36:03as he gets across the 45-yard line,
00:36:05but there's a flag on the play,
00:36:07and it might very well have been
00:36:10trying to get Staubach on a throwing the ball.
00:36:14I believe you're right.
00:36:16Kansas City, 7.
00:36:18Cincinnati, 7 in the second quarter.
00:36:22So there it is.
00:36:23They look like they were roughing up Staubach a little bit.
00:36:27They're using those screens and the draws
00:36:29and the delay action pretty effectively.
00:36:31Those linebackers are taking deep drops.
00:36:33Personal foul.
00:36:34Roughing the passer.
00:36:35Number 73, defense.
00:36:37First down.
00:36:38That's Lasikich. Let's see.
00:36:40He got away from his man,
00:36:41but then, of course, that's what they wanted him to do,
00:36:43use the screen to draw him in there
00:36:44and get him out of the pursuit.
00:36:46Hasn't been playing regularly.
00:36:47That's understandable that he'd make those mistakes.
00:36:50Newhouse puts a burst on.
00:36:52A master right there.
00:36:54The Eagle linebackers, as I said, are dropping deep,
00:36:56but they're coming up, converging very quickly.
00:36:58That was Tom Rafferty who made the block for Newhouse.
00:37:01So it is first and 10 on the Eagle 39-yard line.
00:37:04Salde on the right side now on a wing,
00:37:07and here comes Newhouse, and he runs into a game.
00:37:10So far, Dorsett, in 8 carries, has gone for 41 yards.
00:37:15Newhouse in 7 carries, 35 yards.
00:37:18As we said, the Eagles have rushed for only 11.
00:37:20Here's the bowl picture on CBS.
00:37:22Sunday, Christmas Day, Penn State versus Arizona State.
00:37:27Following the Fiesta Bowl will be the Sun Bowl.
00:37:30Saturday, December 31st, Stanford versus LSU.
00:37:33Yeah, that ought to be a game.
00:37:34Cotton Bowl, Monday, January 2nd,
00:37:36undefeated Texas and Notre Dame.
00:37:38That will really be a game.
00:37:40Second and 7 on the 36 of the Eagles,
00:37:43and motion comes through Pearson.
00:37:46Play action fake to Newhouse, who stays in to block.
00:37:49Hairston tried to drag him down and couldn't,
00:37:51but he's eaten up at the last minute by Manny Sistrunk, number 79.
00:37:57Yes, and you all recall how he got over there on a Joe Lavender trade
00:38:01a year ago or two years ago.
00:38:03Memory escapes me right now.
00:38:05Good coverage there, as you see.
00:38:07Pressure on, and Roger just does not throw it up for grabs.
00:38:10Not many interceptions does this man throw.
00:38:12Eagles have improved themselves over the last year
00:38:14considerably in their pass rush.
00:38:16That's their 40th sack of the season in the last year.
00:38:18I think they had something like 19 the year before,
00:38:20something like 17.
00:38:22Well, Sistrunk, who put the pressure on
00:38:24and took advantage after Hairston had Staubach scrambling,
00:38:28makes it a third and six from the 35-yard line.
00:38:31And so once again, Roger looks down the barrel of the shotgun.
00:38:367-0 Dallas early in the second quarter.
00:38:40Going it out to Dorsett.
00:38:42Bunting had to bring him down at the 25-yard line.
00:38:45That'll be enough for a first down.
00:38:47And that is something the Cowboys have used sparingly,
00:38:50as Dorsett is a receiver.
00:38:51As you know, they put Preston Pearson in situations like that.
00:38:54But if you're going to be a running back
00:38:55and as many zone defenses are thrown up,
00:38:57you've got to be able to catch the ball too.
00:38:59Coming into this game, Dorsett had caught 20 passes,
00:39:02so he's accustomed to be on the other end of it.
00:39:04Dorsett also has Dallas's longest run from scrimmage.
00:39:07He busted one 77 yards against St. Louis.
00:39:10So Tony Dorsett is everything you thought he might be
00:39:13in professional ball.
00:39:15First and 10 from the 26.
00:39:1712 minutes left in the second period.
00:39:197-0 Dallas.
00:39:20Newhouse across the 25.
00:39:28Holding his whole defense together is, as usual, Bill Bergey,
00:39:31number 66.
00:39:33Just what can you say about a guy like that
00:39:34that hadn't been said?
00:39:36Not only is he a great football player,
00:39:37he's a great person and a great competitor.
00:39:39He just does not quit.
00:39:40I don't care how far they're out of the game.
00:39:42And speaking of out of the game,
00:39:43the Philadelphia Eagles have not been out of the one game
00:39:45this year, and that was against the Rams.
00:39:47Their second game of the season
00:39:48where they got beat 20 to nothing, I believe.
00:39:50Which is a very frustrating decision for the Eagles.
00:39:52Will they tinker with a club that is going to get better,
00:39:55or do they have a ball club that is really just a buck short?
00:39:59There goes Newhouse.
00:40:01And again, the Eagles meet him head-on
00:40:03before he can get to the 20-yard line.
00:40:06Newhouse has carried nine times for 39 yards
00:40:09prior to that trip.
00:40:12For the Eagles, they have been bottled up
00:40:14on a couple of marvelous punts by Danny White.
00:40:17They have also been bottled up by their inability
00:40:19to get the ball away from Dallas
00:40:21to continue to just hold on to it,
00:40:22even though they have only one touchdown.
00:40:24The Cowboys went 58 yards
00:40:26the first time they got the opening kickoff
00:40:28after a 37-yard return by Butch Johnson
00:40:30gave them very good field position.
00:40:33Third and five from the 21 of Philadelphia.
00:40:36Shotgun again.
00:40:43And an inside flip to Pearson,
00:40:45a flag on the play, and he's gone into the end zone.
00:40:51Oh, those Dallas Cowboys.
00:40:53They will throw a rickle in down there.
00:40:56It'll be motion against Dallas,
00:40:58and that will nullify the touchdown.
00:41:01Don't that smart.
00:41:03What's that line?
00:41:04Don't that make your blue-eyed brown
00:41:06or is it brown-eyed blue?
00:41:07Either way, you've got it across.
00:41:10Oh, that one does hurt.
00:41:16Illegal motion, number 67, offense.
00:41:21Number 67 would be Pat Donovan
00:41:23having a fine year for the Dallas Cowboys.
00:41:25Let's see if we can pick it up.
00:41:26He'd be the right tackle.
00:41:29I don't believe we got the movement there,
00:41:31but this is Dallas precision, brother,
00:41:32and execution, as you mentioned earlier.
00:41:34When they do get a play,
00:41:35it's like it's off the blackboard
00:41:38all the way in, untouched until the one.
00:41:41So they'll spot it back on the 26,
00:41:42where it is third and 10 for Staubach.
00:41:46Dorsett and Pearson split behind Roger.
00:41:51Staubach going the distance,
00:41:53and he's intercepted in the end zone by Randy Logan.
00:41:57He's going to run it out to the 15-yard line,
00:42:00spun and dropped at the 17.
00:42:02What an incredible reception, one-handed.
00:42:05Randy Logan, his third interception of the year.
00:42:08Oh, he fell off that time.
00:42:09Beautiful, beautiful thing.
00:42:11Trying to go to Pearson with a deep post.
00:42:13Roger Staubach didn't even look at anybody else.
00:42:16Now watch the play.
00:42:18With that one hand going up there,
00:42:19he may have stayed in,
00:42:21sensing an opportunity, and moved on out.
00:42:28And once again, the built-up Eagles have dodged another bullet.
00:42:31That's an interception by Randy Logan,
00:42:33the one-handed one.
00:42:34Time of possession we don't have right now,
00:42:36but a number of plays.
00:42:37Dallas has run 29 against the Eagles, 12.
00:42:40We can give it to you now.
00:42:41Cowboys have had it over 10 minutes,
00:42:43and the Eagles, 4 minutes.
00:42:45The 1st and 10 from the 18.
00:42:47Big clutch play for the Eagles,
00:42:49and Jaworski now trying to get out there to Krepley,
00:42:52and Krepley pushed out of bounds
00:42:54after he got across the 35-yard line.
00:42:57He went out at the 37, 1st and 10, Eagles.
00:43:00He has been a pleasant surprise, Keith Krepley.
00:43:02He, in fact, is averaging over 19 yards a carry,
00:43:05and that's high for any tight end in all of football.
00:43:10Charlie J.
00:43:11Charlie Johnson, whom we saw just about destroyed
00:43:13by Ralph Neely on a clean but savage block,
00:43:17and he doesn't look like a man who's going to play anymore.
00:43:19No.
00:43:20Took the shoulder pads off.
00:43:221st and 10 on the 37.
00:43:24Jaworski, again out to Carmichael,
00:43:27and he is drilled and chased by Aaron Kyle.
00:43:31Got it out to the 42-yard line.
00:43:35Got it out to the 42-yard line.
00:43:42Don't forget a great show,
00:43:44the 1977 Heisman Trophy Awards special.
00:43:47Elliot Gould and O.J. Simpson will host an hour of entertainment,
00:43:50and among the many stars appearing,
00:43:52Phyllis George, Reggie Jackson, Connie Stevens, and Leslie Uggen.
00:43:55The presentation of college football's highest honor,
00:43:58Thursday at 10, Eastern 9, Central and Mountain Time.
00:44:042nd and 4 from the 43.
00:44:07Carmichael, wide right.
00:44:09Smith is left.
00:44:12Fumbled, but the Eagles recovered,
00:44:14and the 2nd man fell on top of it as Jaworski couldn't find it,
00:44:19but Hogan did.
00:44:22Mike Hogan bailing out Jaworski,
00:44:24who just dropped it right on the snap.
00:44:26It's not there.
00:44:28Hogan came up to save the bacon.
00:44:31Despite the absence of a running game,
00:44:33the Philadelphia Eagles have done surprisingly well
00:44:35in the stats department for offense.
00:44:37They're 6th in offense in the NFC,
00:44:39and with a record of 3 and 8,
00:44:40you wouldn't think they'd be that high.
00:44:42It's been on the arm of Jaworski.
00:44:44Such reception by Randy Logan in the end zone
00:44:47to stop Dallas, plus the infraction of man in motion
00:44:50that took a touchdown away from the Cowboys.
00:44:56And Jaworski spinning out of a sack.
00:45:00To the 45, and he'll go down at about the 47.
00:45:04Going down for his life,
00:45:06and I think he would pick up the 1st down.
00:45:08And you talk about your mobile quarterback,
00:45:10not only did he gain a couple yards on the thing,
00:45:12and I think gave him a 1st down,
00:45:13but he kept getting killed by Harvey Martin.
00:45:15Watch him jump rope back there, too.
00:45:17Would you watch?
00:45:18This is a sign of an exceptional athlete
00:45:20that makes plays like this.
00:45:22Look at this now.
00:45:23That's Bill Gregory, number 77, Harvey Martin right there.
00:45:27Spins out of that, or gets knocked out of it, I guess,
00:45:30and turns it on upfield.
00:45:31I believe in a mobile quarterback then.
00:45:33And he's mobile, all right.
00:45:351st and 10 to the Eagle 49-yard line.
00:45:38All started on the interception by Randy Logan.
00:45:42Lust and Hogan in the backfield.
00:45:45Jaworski gonna put it up.
00:45:47Looking left, a lot of time.
00:45:49Goes deep left, and it's caught by Hogan,
00:45:53and he's gonna go all the way.
00:45:56Mike Hogan, a 2nd-year man out of Tennessee in Chattanooga
00:46:00in the 51-yard touchdown pass.
00:46:02And would you believe who he outran that time to get open.
00:46:05Of course, you'll see it all the time in the world
00:46:07with that Philadelphia offensive line.
00:46:09Virtually no pass rush,
00:46:10but he beats Tom Henderson, who has excellent speed.
00:46:13Tom Henderson's below a 10-flat sprinter himself.
00:46:19Mike Hogan, look at it again.
00:46:22All the time in the world.
00:46:24All the time in the world.
00:46:25He tried to go deep to Smith on a post pattern.
00:46:27Couldn't, and that's his secondary receiver.
00:46:29And a fine reception there by Hogan,
00:46:31who's been just a phenomenal athlete for Philadelphia.
00:46:34He's just been a picture of steadiness.
00:46:36Nick McAmyer just joined the club,
00:46:38gets it up, and it's good.
00:46:40And he is a full-fledged member of the Philadelphia Eagles.
00:46:43So 1st, an interception by Randy Logan,
00:46:46and then the touchdown pass to Hogan.
00:46:48Logan to Hogan, and we're 7-7 in Texas.
00:46:5253-year-old Mike Hogan on the end of that touchdown pass
00:46:55from Ron Jaworski, and the Eagles and Cowboys are tied 7-7.
00:47:00And now Nick McAmyer kicks it deep to Larry Brinson
00:47:03on the 1-yard line as the Cowboys take over.
00:47:06Brinson to the 20-yard line.
00:47:08Hit from behind and dragged down by Outlaw,
00:47:10and he got out to about the 23.
00:47:13You know, the Cowboys have been absolutely awesome
00:47:16in the second quarter all year.
00:47:18They have scored 101 points in the second quarter,
00:47:21and when Staubach threw that apparent inside pass
00:47:25to Pearson for a touchdown,
00:47:27it looked like they were going to rout the Eagles.
00:47:29But then came the interception by Randy Logan
00:47:31and the touchdown pass to Mike Hogan,
00:47:34and the Eagles have done it 82 yards in 6 plays,
00:47:377-7 with 7.29 to go in the half.
00:47:40Richards wide right, Pearson wide left.
00:47:47Dorsett, and the Eagles are there,
00:47:49Bill Berge, among others, to put a hold on him.
00:47:54That's been the big quarter all season for the Dallas Cowboys.
00:47:57They've only given up 59 points,
00:47:59and as you said, they've scored 101 in the second quarter.
00:48:04So the biggest play of the game really turns out
00:48:07to be the motion penalty charged to Pat Donovan,
00:48:10who pulled on what appeared to be
00:48:12the touchdown by Preston Pearson,
00:48:14and the Eagles, as they have done all year,
00:48:16gathering themselves together and come back to tie it up.
00:48:19Second and 8 from the 26.
00:48:23Butch Johnson is wide right and Pearson wide left.
00:48:26The backs of Dorsett and Newhouse.
00:48:28Staubach looks right but then throws to Dorsett,
00:48:31and he's going to go down at the 40-yard line.
00:48:34So Dorsett picks up the first down to the 40.
00:48:37You see the added dimension you get
00:48:39with a guy named Tony Dorsett in your backfield,
00:48:41not only running the ball but in little delayed actions,
00:48:43which are always open.
00:48:45I understand why coaches say he just hangs in the backfield there,
00:48:48waits for those linebackers to clear.
00:48:50A simple pass to throw, and you rarely see it go
00:48:52for under 6, 8, 10, 12 yards.
00:48:55I don't see why they don't use it more often.
00:48:57With a guy like him, he can take it to distance.
00:48:59Dorsett, who is almost averaging 5 yards a rush,
00:49:02has caught 2, and at first intent on the 40,
00:49:05and now Dorsett will run, but Randy Logan
00:49:07hit him at the ankles at the 40-yard line,
00:49:10and then Hairston fell on top.
00:49:13Tom Landry sending in Jay Salty,
00:49:16the tight end with another play.
00:49:18Look at that Mike Ditka.
00:49:20Look at him. Looks like Errol Flynn.
00:49:22Brother.
00:49:23He has kept himself in great shape.
00:49:25You remember Mike Ditka from the Chicago Bears
00:49:27and coming down here with the Dallas Cowboys.
00:49:29Stay-at-home movies are always good for a laugh,
00:49:31especially when they recapture Rota's childhood.
00:49:33Hilarious highlight of tonight's family reunion on Rota
00:49:36at 8, 7 Central and Mountain Time.
00:49:38Join the fun.
00:49:40We've got fun here.
00:49:412nd and 9 from the 41, 7-7.
00:49:445.30 left to go to the half.
00:49:46Here comes Newhouse.
00:49:47And here is Pelton.
00:49:50Lazatic and Hairston really put it to him.
00:49:53That's it.
00:49:54Pete's playing well in replacement of Charlie Johnson.
00:49:56Pete Lazatic.
00:49:58He has done well.
00:50:02Lazatic, who made that stop, number 73,
00:50:06is a much-traveled guy.
00:50:07He played in the Canadian Football League with Calgary.
00:50:12Manny Sistrunk helped out.
00:50:14The Eagles have had their problems.
00:50:15As you know, through various trades they've made,
00:50:17whether right or wrong,
00:50:19they've lost a lot of the draft choices
00:50:20and won't have, really, a first draft choice for two years.
00:50:22But they're just making makeshift jobs
00:50:24for all the players they can find wherever they come from.
00:50:273rd and 7 from the 43, Staubach,
00:50:29out of the shotgun and either just messed up the pass
00:50:32or it was actually deflected.
00:50:35And he was in the act of passing.
00:50:38Or was that an interception?
00:50:39I saw a hand come down there right underneath it.
00:50:41Let's see.
00:50:42I don't know whether somebody just spun the ball around
00:50:44or whether it slipped out of Roger's hand.
00:50:46It happened so fast.
00:50:48And maybe we can take another look.
00:50:49Well, that's the great thing about instant replay, isn't it?
00:50:51Yeah.
00:50:52Let's take a look and see.
00:50:53Roger's getting a hold of it all right.
00:50:57That arm's going forward.
00:50:58It is not a fumble.
00:50:59Oops, see, it just came out.
00:51:01He was throwing a knuckleball.
00:51:02That's it.
00:51:03Or a spitter.
00:51:04You don't see it very often.
00:51:07The 4th and 7 from the 43.
00:51:09And Danny White, who has kicked two out,
00:51:11one at the 8 and one at the 6.
00:51:13This time he's too far away,
00:51:15so he belts it down to Larry Marshall.
00:51:17And the kid with a broken nose
00:51:19gets it tripped up by Benny Barnes
00:51:22at the 15-yard line.
00:51:24Boy, what a player is Benny Barnes, ever 31.
00:51:27Yes, sir.
00:51:28He is awfully good on the putting teams.
00:51:31All right.
00:51:32The Eagles 7 and the Cowboys 7.
00:51:344.50 to go to the half.
00:51:40The Eagles 1st and 10 on their own 18.
00:51:43That's where they started on their last touchdown drive.
00:51:46As they play in that drive, a pass to Keith Krefle.
00:51:49And we'll see if Dvorsky is looking for the tight end again.
00:51:52But no.
00:51:53It is Bederson,
00:51:54and he is pulled down shy of the 20-yard line.
00:51:57Jim Bederson,
00:51:59one-year man who has a touchdown this year.
00:52:01He's out of North Carolina.
00:52:05Say a reminder, Jerry Pate and Hollis Stacy
00:52:08leading Curtis Strange and Nancy Lopez
00:52:10by three strokes in the mixed-team championship.
00:52:13And that'll be on the finale right after the game,
00:52:15so stay with us.
00:52:17Carmichael goes wide left.
00:52:20Montgomery behind Hogan.
00:52:24And Smith wide right.
00:52:30And it's a gift to Hogan.
00:52:32And I'll tell you who was very surprised on the play,
00:52:35and because he was surprised, it didn't work.
00:52:38Stan Walters.
00:52:39Number 75 was just standing there
00:52:41and appeared to be startled on that play.
00:52:43Yes, sir.
00:52:44He passed him up in his wake.
00:52:46I think Walters expected a pass.
00:52:48Watch 75 on the left side.
00:52:52There's Hogan.
00:52:53There's Walters.
00:52:54Walters saying, where'd you come from?
00:52:56He might have thought that was going to develop
00:52:57to the inside that time.
00:52:59He looked like he was going to start off left all the way.
00:53:01Good effort there by Mike Hogan.
00:53:02You've got to like a guy like that.
00:53:04So it's third and five.
00:53:05The Eagles move the ball out to the 23-yard line.
00:53:08Started on the 18th.
00:53:10Smith slot right inside Carmichael.
00:53:13And there's Krefli now coming off the line
00:53:15as the tight end wide left.
00:53:17And they ran out of time.
00:53:19Took two on.
00:53:20The 32nd clock runs down,
00:53:22and that'll pin two.
00:53:24The 32nd clock runs down,
00:53:26and that'll pin five yards on the Eagles.
00:53:28And instead of a third and six,
00:53:30you're going to have a third and 11.
00:53:32That's no quarterback in the world,
00:53:34I'll tell you.
00:53:35And with that field position,
00:53:36I'll tell you, he likes that position.
00:53:37Delay.
00:53:38Offense.
00:53:39Well, they started on the 18th,
00:53:41and they're right back there again now.
00:53:43A third down call by Ron Jaworski.
00:53:467-7.
00:53:47Dorsett went over from inside the two.
00:53:50And a 51-yard touchdown pass
00:53:52from Jaworski to Hogan tied it up.
00:53:54Third and 10 from the 18.
00:53:57With 324 to go to the half.
00:54:02Gilbert Montgomery in there with Mike Hogan.
00:54:08And Jaworski chasing away from Gregory,
00:54:11and he's got his man for the first down.
00:54:15Bill Gregory chasing Jaworski,
00:54:17but Ron had his eyes down the right side
00:54:20and picked up Charlie Smith and hit him.
00:54:23Charlie Smith.
00:54:24Biggest thing they have,
00:54:25the nearest thing they have to a deep threat on the Eagle team.
00:54:28He doesn't have blinding speed.
00:54:29He catches the ball well, runs pretty good batter.
00:54:31They're pleased with him.
00:54:35So they picked up 16 yards from the 18 to the 34.
00:54:38That's their first and 10 for the Eagles.
00:54:40We have two minutes and 51 seconds,
00:54:42and Charlie Johnson has had it for the day
00:54:45and perhaps for the year.
00:54:47Pitch back to Wilbert Montgomery,
00:54:50and he goes out of bounds.
00:54:51A flag on the play,
00:54:53and I think a clip is going to be charged
00:54:55against Stan Walters, number 75.
00:54:58Let's see.
00:54:59Thomas Henderson pointing at Walters.
00:55:02Say, you are the guilty party.
00:55:04Henderson, a very outspoken cowboy himself.
00:55:10So Thomas Henderson wearing a striped shirt for the moment,
00:55:13indicating the man who broke the rules,
00:55:15and Stan Walters a little bit ticked off now.
00:55:24They'll spot it at the 21-yard line,
00:55:27and we'll get the call.
00:55:28Personal foul.
00:55:30Flipping, number 35.
00:55:32Offense.
00:55:33Number 35.
00:55:34Number 35, which is Mike Hogan.
00:55:36So we'll take another look.
00:55:38Now, Henderson thought that Walters, 75, flipped.
00:55:41Let's take a look at 75, Stan Walters,
00:55:43and let's look at 35,
00:55:44and let's see who did give you the 50.
00:55:46Well, it was on a marginal flip.
00:55:48It was a flip.
00:55:49I would think probably we'd go on Walters there
00:55:51and go back to the back of his leg.
00:55:53Well, it's first and 23 from the 21-yard line,
00:55:56and Jaworski to Montgomery.
00:55:58He got away from two tacklers.
00:56:00He got out across the 25.
00:56:02Colley Waters and Harvey Martin appeared to have him,
00:56:05but he got away for a yard or two,
00:56:07but they're still very, very deep.
00:56:09That was a long way to go.
00:56:10The outstanding Randy White was fooled that time.
00:56:12Took him out of his area on a misdirection play.
00:56:14What a year he's having, though.
00:56:16All pro honors, I think, are coming his way.
00:56:19I can't believe that.
00:56:22Whoa.
00:56:23Don't forget at halftime, we'll have all the scores,
00:56:25but that one will stand up by itself for a while.
00:56:28The Giants, 20, and the Cardinals, 7 and the 4th.
00:56:33Ball on the 27-yard line.
00:56:35It is 2nd and 17 for Jaworski,
00:56:38and he wants to come over and talk to Dick Vermeer.
00:56:41Vermeer, the 41-year-old coach of the Eagles,
00:56:44who has done a marvelous job.
00:56:46Of course, it's quite a job to come up with the play,
00:56:492nd and 17.
00:56:51The two minutes left in the first half.
00:56:53Eagles and Dallas, 7-7.
00:56:56Go to the half.
00:56:58The Eagles and the Cowboys are stacked up 7-7,
00:57:01and for the Eagles,
00:57:03they have 17 yards to go for a first down.
00:57:06The ball on the Philadelphia 27-yard line,
00:57:102nd and 17 for Jaworski,
00:57:12who has a modest string going now.
00:57:14He has completed four in a row.
00:57:16The last one to Charlie Smith.
00:57:20Charlie goes wide right.
00:57:22Carmichael is left,
00:57:24and Sullivan is back in there with Hogan.
00:57:262nd down, 17.
00:57:30Hogan stays in the block,
00:57:32and he dumps it off to Sullivan,
00:57:34and Sullivan is stacked up and knocked out of bounds
00:57:36by Mark Washington and Aaron Kyle.
00:57:39And Ben Scully, who would have thought this game at halftime
00:57:41would have been like it,
00:57:42the way Dallas came out on their first series drive,
00:57:44got a hit 7-0,
00:57:45threatened the entire first quarter,
00:57:47and now it's tied up 7-7.
00:57:49The only interesting point about score,
00:57:51Dallas won last week 14-7.
00:57:54The Eagles lost to New England 14-7,
00:57:57and they're playing somewhat the way they must have played last week.
00:58:00Cowboys have amazed me through the years, though.
00:58:02They seem like they only move the ball when they have to.
00:58:04They don't have killer in a lot of games that start out this year.
00:58:07It looks like they're the best cowboy team ever.
00:58:09They're building up large scores on teams.
00:58:12The last four weeks, not so.
00:58:143rd and 15 from the 29.
00:58:22Jaworski going to go to Hogan at the 30 to the 35,
00:58:26out to the 38-yard line.
00:58:28That is not nearly enough for the first down.
00:58:30He ought to pick up 15 yards and get to the 44.
00:58:34So the Eagles will have to give it up.
00:58:37And Spike Jones will come in to do the punting.
00:58:391 minute and 37 seconds left to go to the half.
00:58:42The Eagles and the Cowboys are all tied 7-7.
00:58:48Again, to repeat, the Eagles this year have scored 162 points.
00:58:53They have allowed only 169.
00:58:57Meanwhile, the Cowboy defense has given up only 157.
00:59:02So it figures to be a hard-nosed game.
00:59:04The last time they met, the Cowboys won 16-10.
00:59:08So it's 7-7 with 137 to go.
00:59:12And for the Eagles to shut the Cowboys out in the second quarter,
00:59:15that's quite a trick.
00:59:16It certainly is.
00:59:17It's a tribute to the coaching of the Eagles staff
00:59:19because they're playing with a lot of makeshift players.
00:59:22The Eagles have three timeouts, Dallas with two,
00:59:25and Spike Jones ready to kick.
00:59:28Standing all alone is Butch Johnson on his 20-yard line.
00:59:33And hold everything.
00:59:34Knocked flat on his back is Dennis Franks, the center.
00:59:41That turned out to be a big play the other night
00:59:43in the Washington game, didn't it?
00:59:45That's right.
00:59:46When D.D. Lewis, the center in Washington,
00:59:48felt that D.D. had moved,
00:59:50drew the line offside,
00:59:53kept the Dallas drive alive,
00:59:55and they went on to win it.
00:59:58So the Eagles turn about as fair play.
01:00:01Let's get the call.
01:00:02We do know that Dennis Frank was knocked on his numbers.
01:00:05Knocked on his numbers.
01:00:08Encroachment.
01:00:09Offense.
01:00:10Move it back a little.
01:00:13So that makes it 4th and 5.
01:00:15So give Spike an extra 5 yards to work with.
01:00:17Don't forget, Brent Phillips and Irv coming up
01:00:19along with a report from Largo, Florida,
01:00:21our mixed-team championship at halftime.
01:00:23Scores of all the other games.
01:00:27Low pass from center.
01:00:29He still got it away.
01:00:31Puts Johnson at his 25.
01:00:34Popali nailed him at the 30.
01:00:37Vince Popali has done a fine job
01:00:39twice of causing Johnson to fair catch,
01:00:42and this time when Johnson caught it,
01:00:44Popali caught Johnson.
01:00:45Earns his money, doesn't he?
01:00:46Sure does.
01:00:49He really had a short hop the ball.
01:00:51Dennis Frank really bounced it to him.
01:00:53Ben alluded to a low snap from center,
01:00:55and that's just about shoe tops.
01:00:59That will throw a kicker off, too.
01:01:01It might be why you can directly attribute that
01:01:03to the short kick, or relatively short kick.
01:01:05All right, the Cowboys, with two timeouts,
01:01:07have it 1st and 10 on their own 31.
01:01:091.28 left to the half.
01:01:117.7 tie out of the shotgun of Staubach.
01:01:15High off Dorsett's hand.
01:01:17And both Mihalik and LeMaster
01:01:19were coming up to try and knock him back to Pittsburgh.
01:01:22Mihalik has been good on the pass coverage all day.
01:01:25He is getting a good, long, deep drop,
01:01:27but he is coming up rather quickly.
01:01:28Look at this.
01:01:29You've got to know that Tony Dorsett
01:01:31knew there was somebody in the area
01:01:32because his concentration was not entirely on the football.
01:01:35And look.
01:01:36Here they come.
01:01:39Mihalik and LeMaster saying,
01:01:41next time.
01:01:42And I'll be here the next time you come.
01:01:442nd and 10 from the 31
01:01:46with a minute and 23 seconds to go.
01:01:52Roger loading up the shotgun.
01:01:59Staubach going to the right side,
01:02:01off the hands of Dupree, the tight end.
01:02:04And the crowd growling a little.
01:02:06John Bunning was right there defending.
01:02:09Billy Joe Dupree.
01:02:11We've been down here in the lines
01:02:12with Joe Dons and the Billy Joes and the Billy Clydes.
01:02:16They will have a double name here in Texas.
01:02:23So Staubach now has a 3rd and 10.
01:02:25And Roger...
01:02:28with a hello CBS from the Super Bowl bound Cowboys.
01:02:31It says there,
01:02:33there's a lot to be decided before the Super Bowl.
01:02:35Particularly with that St. Louis game going like it is.
01:02:38Who's going to be the wild card from where?
01:02:41Alright, 3rd and 10 from the 31.
01:02:44118.
01:02:47Staubach faking over the head of Burnham.
01:02:51Dumps it off to Pearson.
01:02:52And he fakes Logan.
01:02:54And he's to midfield.
01:02:55And coming is Johnny Outlaw
01:02:57to trip him up at the 40 yard line.
01:02:59The old middle screen trick.
01:03:01Just the other day I was asked,
01:03:02why didn't Roger Staubach throw the middle screen
01:03:04from the shotgun formation?
01:03:06Well he does.
01:03:07And there you'll see it.
01:03:08He just gets the ball over Lem Burnham's hand.
01:03:12Burnham almost got it.
01:03:13You see Preston Pearson stepping back inside
01:03:15acting like a blocker.
01:03:16The old jump pass by Roger Staubach.
01:03:18I know of no other quarterback that uses it.
01:03:20Look at the 3 men out in front.
01:03:21Rafferty.
01:03:23Herbert Scott.
01:03:24And here is the thing.
01:03:25Preston Pearson
01:03:26Preston Pearson
01:03:27very intelligent receiver
01:03:28but not the speed
01:03:29and a person with more speed
01:03:30might have taken it on in for the score.
01:03:32Yep.
01:03:33When it comes to the 2 minute drill
01:03:34there's no quarterback any better than Roger Staubach.
01:03:36A minute and 6 left as you see.
01:03:38First and 10 on the Eagle.
01:03:4039.
01:03:41A cowboy club that has destroyed the opposition
01:03:43in the 2nd quarter
01:03:44has been blanked up to here in the 2nd quarter.
01:03:47Staubach down the right side
01:03:49throws it away
01:03:50puts Johnson in the area.
01:03:51That's about all.
01:03:53John Outlaw on the cover.
01:03:57Now Staubach stops the clock
01:03:59with 1 minute and 1 second to go at the half.
01:04:022nd and 10.
01:04:03The ball on the Eagle.
01:04:0439 yard line.
01:04:05You know you mentioned the fact that
01:04:07among active quarterbacks
01:04:08he is the oldest at 35.
01:04:10You just don't think of it
01:04:11because of the 4 years he spent in the Navy
01:04:12before joining the Cowboys.
01:04:13At 35 they've got to keep a boy like
01:04:16White around Danny White
01:04:17to start thinking in terms of replacing him.
01:04:19Although he does take care of his body
01:04:21a whole lot more than
01:04:22well say Billy Kilmer.
01:04:24Billy Kilmer?
01:04:262nd and 10 from the Eagle.
01:04:2939.
01:04:36Staubach again
01:04:37down the middle this time
01:04:39and a high great catch by Golden Richards.
01:04:42And he's down just shy of the 15 yard line.
01:04:45It was Golden Richards
01:04:46who caught the touchdown pass
01:04:48to beat Washington.
01:04:50And a fine catch there.
01:04:52Roger gets it.
01:04:53Roger gets it.
01:04:54I think we'll see this right here
01:04:55just after he releases the ball.
01:04:57All the concentration is on that open man.
01:05:00Just as he released it he did get dumped.
01:05:02Look at the fine catch by Golden Richards
01:05:04who is not having one of his finer years.
01:05:05Of course he's only playing half the time.
01:05:07He's alternating with Quick Johnson.
01:05:09Makes a fine catch before he takes it on down.
01:05:11He's only averaging 12 yards per reception this year
01:05:14and his previous average is somewhere up around
01:05:16old 18 or 19.
01:05:18Dick Vermeil 41 and aging rapidly
01:05:21with 52 seconds left to go in the half.
01:05:24Dick has done an outstanding job with the Eagles
01:05:27coming off the campus of UCLA
01:05:29where he had upset Ohio State in the Rose Bowl.
01:05:31He was 15 and 5 in college in two years.
01:05:35Dick has seen his club come agonizingly close
01:05:38so many times this year.
01:05:41And as he was saying yesterday
01:05:42the one thing he is trying desperately to learn
01:05:45is to absorb a tough defeat
01:05:48without chewing himself to pieces.
01:05:50That's right. He used to blame himself for all the losses.
01:05:52He said this year it's just been too frustrating.
01:05:54I passed him twice today in the lobby
01:05:56before I realized who it was.
01:05:57He's such a youthful person.
01:05:58On the other side of the field
01:06:00standing atop Mount Olympus
01:06:02is the sixth winningest coach in the history of football.
01:06:05Tom Landry at 53
01:06:07has seen his Cowboys win 146 games.
01:06:11They're going into the playoff
01:06:12for the 11th time in their last 12 years.
01:06:15If they win today they'll be
01:06:17winners in the NFC East for the second consecutive year.
01:06:20A very matter-of-fact, calm, self-contained man
01:06:23and his teams play just like it.
01:06:24They're very disciplined.
01:06:26As is he.
01:06:27In his dress, his appearance, the whole thing.
01:06:30And of course for Tom I guess
01:06:31the peak of his career winning the Super Bowl
01:06:33Super Bowl VI in 72.
01:06:35Right now it's first and 10 on the 16.
01:06:37We have 52 seconds to go to the half.
01:06:42Preston Pearson and Tony Dorsett
01:06:43back of Starbucks.
01:06:47Starbucks is going for six
01:06:49and throws it away.
01:06:51Down there in the corner was Drew Pearson
01:06:53but he wasn't within 10 yards of the ball.
01:06:58Well you can look at things from two ways.
01:07:00Let's look at it from John Outlaw's position
01:07:02and you'll find that he had the coverage.
01:07:03They had the right coverage on that time.
01:07:05If anything it would have been interference on Drew Pearson.
01:07:09Did we catch it?
01:07:12The pattern was not there.
01:07:13Roger tried to force that one.
01:07:14Should have not thrown it that early.
01:07:18The crowd roaring over that giant Cardinal ball game
01:07:23with 47 seconds to go to the half.
01:07:26After two big passes, a screen pass to Preston Pearson
01:07:29and a pass to Golden Richards.
01:07:30Starbucks is trying to take his ball club
01:07:32into the locker room with a lead instead of tying.
01:07:37Once more going into the end zone
01:07:39and this time it's caught by Drew Pearson
01:07:41for a touchdown.
01:07:45How many times do we have to say it?
01:07:47When the Cowboys get in trouble you can look at them
01:07:49going to Drew Pearson.
01:07:51Number 88.
01:07:52Big players make big plays Ben
01:07:54and that's why the Cowboys have been so successful in the past.
01:07:57Roger Staubach, a big player himself,
01:07:59right on the money.
01:08:01A fine catch there by Drew Pearson.
01:08:03Good coverage by John Outlaw
01:08:05but there's no good coverage against a perfectly thrown pass.
01:08:08Let's look at it again from a different angle.
01:08:10Ground level shot of it.
01:08:12Up and at it.
01:08:15So the Cowboys who were denied once
01:08:18when it appeared that Preston Pearson had scored
01:08:21and that was called back,
01:08:22this time they get one for keeps to Drew Pearson
01:08:25and the Cowboys have once again asserted themselves
01:08:28they lead the Eagles 14 to 7
01:08:30with 42 seconds to go to halftime.
01:08:33But for the Eagles, anyone who saw them
01:08:36on that 51 yard touchdown pass to Mike Hogan
01:08:39it's certainly not a ball club that's going to back off and quit
01:08:42not by any means.
01:08:48Now you talk about infinity
01:08:50there's a man looking at himself
01:08:52looking at himself
01:08:54looking at himself
01:08:56at infinitum.
01:08:58He had to lug that around all the way from home too
01:09:00just for that moment.
01:09:02You're in show Ben.
01:09:04Wilbert Montgomery and Larry Marshall
01:09:07the twin safeties now going back to receive for Philadelphia
01:09:11and little Efren Herrera will be kicking off for Dallas.
01:09:18Bruce Huther number 57 directed to be on the outside of Tom Henderson
01:09:23Mike Hickman just to the left of Herrera
01:09:25and we're ready.
01:09:2642 seconds to go to the half
01:09:29Mike Hickman just to the left of Herrera
01:09:31and we're ready.
01:09:3242 seconds to go to the half
01:09:34Dallas leading the Eagles 14 to 7
01:09:38and Herrera will send it down to Larry Marshall
01:09:42but no Montgomery takes it away from him
01:09:44to the 15 and to the 20.
01:09:48The Wilbert Montgomery a rookie out of Abilene Christian
01:09:51and maybe he decided down here in front of the Texas folks
01:09:54he had a run with one so he just took that away.
01:09:57Part of that is the fact that he's a number two
01:09:59kickoff returner in the NFC.
01:10:01He's done well this year.
01:10:02He's averaged over 24 yards per return.
01:10:04Not so well that time though.
01:10:06Larry Marshall right back of him with 22
01:10:09and Larry playing with a broken nose.
01:10:12You had to play with a broken nose huh?
01:10:14I played with him a lot of times Ben.
01:10:16That big old cage you keep him off of it for a while though.
01:10:19The Eagles have three timeouts and 37 seconds.
01:10:22We'll see how they deploy it.
01:10:25Hogan and Sullivan back to Jaworski from the 20.
01:10:29Fake play action.
01:10:30Dumps it off to Sullivan who juggles and drops it
01:10:32and Randy White knocked a few syllables off Jaworski that time.
01:10:36What a season he's had.
01:10:38Randy White third leading tackler on the team
01:10:40with 55 individual tacklers.
01:10:42He's had 10 sacks as well.
01:10:43He keeps getting better and improving with every game.
01:10:47Jaworski had a string of six straight pass completions
01:10:50but Randy White's rush and the low pass to Sullivan
01:10:53snapped it.
01:10:54Even on screen passes when you get that kind of rush
01:10:56you'll throw off the timing.
01:10:58And Harvey Martin too mean.
01:11:02Notice second and 10 from the 20.
01:11:0434 seconds to go to the half.
01:11:0614 to 7 Cowboys.
01:11:10And they give to Sullivan.
01:11:14He gets across the 25 to the 26 yard line
01:11:17and the clock is running.
01:11:19That was a strange play.
01:11:21A very conservative play.
01:11:22Well they're going to have to take that late touchdown
01:11:24into the half with him.
01:11:25That's bad enough.
01:11:26But anything else if they would get another field goal
01:11:28to add on to that that would be a demoralizing thing.
01:11:30I think they're playing a calculated game now
01:11:32and just go ahead and taking the 14 to 7 deficit
01:11:35into the locker room with them.
01:11:36Wade Key and Jerry Sizemore pulled to lead the way.
01:11:42Timeout now for the Eagles with 22 seconds to go to the half.
01:11:45Jaworski again chatting with Dick Vermele.
01:11:48Vermele was a quarterback coach under the Rams
01:11:52and Tommy Pro Throw back in 1971.
01:11:55And he served under Chuck Knox with the Rams.
01:11:58So he went from professional ball to college ball.
01:12:01Head coach at UCLA and then to the pros as a head coach
01:12:05followed Mike McCormick.
01:12:08Tom Landry is the only coach they've had here.
01:12:11In fact you might just as well say the one and only.
01:12:14Took him seven years to put together a winning organization here.
01:12:18Merchants and their owners stood behind him the whole time
01:12:20and quieted critics that wanted him fired
01:12:22by giving him a 10-year contract
01:12:24and said go ahead complain for 10 more years.
01:12:26But it paid off for him.
01:12:28Of course Landry's name in Texas is synonymous with football.
01:12:31He was a winning fullback at the University of Texas
01:12:34and then he was an All-Pro cornerback for the New York Giants.
01:12:38Third and four from the 26 with 22 seconds to go to the half.
01:12:4314-7 Dallas.
01:12:48Randy White moving around but he got back.
01:12:51And now Jaworski is setting up.
01:12:53Can't find anybody and he has to eat it.
01:12:56All the men were covered.
01:13:00Randy White and Harvey Martin.
01:13:04Who are they going to give this sack to?
01:13:06Or is that when you get the half sack?
01:13:08Which is probably the case right here.
01:13:10See Harvey Martin first there.
01:13:12Randy White just following suit.
01:13:14That's a Dallas first sack of the day to give him 45.
01:13:17And for Jaworski who was knocked flat 8 times last week
01:13:21he had been dodging a bullet until just then.
01:13:28So on 4th and 3rd and 12 he threw
01:13:31and of course now 4th and 12 they'll have to punt.
01:13:34Now what do the Cowboys do? Do they rush it?
01:13:36Or do they try to return it?
01:13:38Because they'll still have time for one play
01:13:40and perhaps kick a field goal
01:13:42Well depending on how far the punt goes
01:13:44they might try for a fair catch
01:13:46it gives them a free kick from whatever area of the field.
01:13:48We'll see if the Philadelphia Eagles
01:13:50first of all have Spike Jones kick it
01:13:52from just about his end zone
01:13:54and then Butch Johnson
01:13:56who has fair catch or fair caught
01:13:58actually two punts today
01:14:00as if he calls another one.
01:14:04Jones will be putting from the 5.
01:14:06And he just did get it away.
01:14:08And there's the fair catch with a flag on the play.
01:14:11Roughing the punter for certain then
01:14:13everybody ran into it.
01:14:15Aaron Kyle one of the leaders.
01:14:16Bruce Huther
01:14:17a rookie out of New Hampshire
01:14:19was a little over anxious and over eager
01:14:22along with Aaron Kyle
01:14:24they were charging in there.
01:14:26So the Eagles offensive team
01:14:28will go back on the field.
01:14:30So where it was 4th and 12
01:14:32by roughing up the kicker
01:14:34the Eagles will have at least one play
01:14:36with 9 seconds to the half.
01:14:39There's a foul running into the kicker
01:14:41number 55.
01:14:42That's right.
01:14:43Bruce Huther.
01:14:44First down.
01:14:4557.
01:14:46Free agent.
01:14:47It was a 35 yard punt
01:14:50but it's all history now.
01:14:52The Eagles first and 10
01:14:54on their own 23.
01:14:56The Cowboys scored the first time they got the ball.
01:14:59Then in the second quarter
01:15:00on an interception by Randy Logan
01:15:02and a 51 yard pass to Mike Hogan
01:15:04the Eagles tied it up.
01:15:06But on the pass from Starbuck to Drew Pearson
01:15:09the Cowboys took the lead again.
01:15:11The Eagles have two timeouts remaining in the half.
01:15:14They have nine seconds
01:15:15and there's a little draw
01:15:17that gets the ball out across the 35 yard line.
01:15:20Timeout as Hogan moves it out
01:15:22across the 35.
01:15:27So two seconds to the half.
01:15:30And again Jaworski coming over to talk to Vermeule.
01:15:34Now why would you want to call two seconds
01:15:36a timeout with two seconds remaining before the half.
01:15:39I have an idea that the Eagles
01:15:41are not just going to sit on the ball.
01:15:44You know it was second and 12
01:15:46and they had that sweep when they pulled the guards.
01:15:49Then it was third and 12 and he passed.
01:15:50He was going for broke.
01:15:52Then we had the infraction on the kicker.
01:15:54Now after a draw play with two seconds left
01:15:57and Jaworski has that kind of an arm
01:15:59he might just try and go all the way.
01:16:01All right. I'll be here for you.
01:16:02Now we'll see.
01:16:03Watch him just fall on the ball.
01:16:06Don't forget to have the scores
01:16:07of all the other ballgames at halftime.
01:16:09Phyllis Brent Nerve will be along.
01:16:11We'll also get a report on golf out of Largo.
01:16:14The last we heard Jerry Pate and Hollis Stacy
01:16:17leading in the championship
01:16:18with Curtis Strange and Nancy Lopez
01:16:20with three back.
01:16:22That was after the third round
01:16:24and we will get a report on the fourth
01:16:26and final round today.
01:16:27Okay first and ten two seconds
01:16:29and everybody out.
01:16:31So Jaworski will be all alone back there.
01:16:34No back staying in.
01:16:39Yes sir. He's going to try.
01:16:41He cranked it up and he's going deep
01:16:44and he wobbled and dropped
01:16:46and down on his knees
01:16:48thinking of what a golden opportunity
01:16:50he had as Charlie Waters.
01:16:52But he was going for broke
01:16:54which is what it appeared that Jaworski
01:16:56was going to do.
01:16:57And so it's halftime in Dallas.
01:16:59The Cowboys with 14
01:17:01and the Philadelphia Eagles
01:17:02why they have seven.
01:17:06Exactly two minutes left
01:17:08in the New York-St. Louis game
01:17:10still 27-7 Giants.
01:17:12Chicago in the fourth quarter
01:17:13trying to hold on to that 3-0 lead
01:17:16that they have over the tough
01:17:17Buccaneer defensive unit today.
01:17:19Walter Payton
01:17:20he's gained about 63 yards so far.
01:17:22Here he is but watch Selman 63
01:17:25come over and make sure he's down
01:17:27and here is Leroy again.
01:17:30All-America from Oklahoma
01:17:31top draft choice
01:17:32taking it to Bob Abilene.
01:17:35Here's a play that turned it around
01:17:36it was still scoreless.
01:17:38Gary Fencek
01:17:39kicked off this pass by Hedberg.
01:17:44Now it's the Selman brothers
01:17:46Dewey and Leroy.
01:17:47They meet at the pass
01:17:48and Walter is squeezed.
01:17:51Finally Thomas connects
01:17:533-0 in that ballgame right now.
01:17:55Now how about the St. Louis-New York
01:17:56Giants game?
01:17:57The Giants served warning
01:17:59on the first series of the afternoon
01:18:01against the Cardinals.
01:18:02The Cardinal defensive unit
01:18:03gave up those 55 points to Miami
01:18:06and just maybe it was no fluke.
01:18:08Here's Bobby Hammond
01:18:09for a touchdown against the Cardinals.
01:18:11It was 7-0.
01:18:12Late in the first quarter
01:18:13Hart rallied the Cardinals.
01:18:15He hit Wayne Morris
01:18:16who was pushed out of bounds.
01:18:18They changed ends of the field.
01:18:20Hart went to Ike Harris
01:18:21for the touchdown.
01:18:22Hart's 12th TD pass of the year.
01:18:25It was 10-7 Giants.
01:18:27Hart dropping back.
01:18:28Badly thrown ball.
01:18:30Bryant intercepted.
01:18:32Went the distance for the touchdown.
01:18:34Giants leading St. Louis
01:18:3617-7 after that.
01:18:39Kwasarczyk
01:18:40wanted his tight end.
01:18:42Gary Shirk
01:18:43Cardinals with trouble
01:18:44in their defensive secondary
01:18:46and you can see it illustrated here.
01:18:4863 yards.
01:18:52Willie Spencer
01:18:53pounded across
01:18:54as the fourth quarter began.
01:18:5627-7
01:18:57inside of two minutes, sir.
01:18:59Brent, with almost two minutes to go
01:19:01in the fourth quarter
01:19:02in the Buffalo Bill Washington Redskins game
01:19:04the Skins have the ball
01:19:05and lead by a score of 7-0
01:19:06deep in Buffalo territory.
01:19:08Joe Theismann was the guy
01:19:09at quarterback
01:19:10who got the call as a starter today
01:19:11and went to Mike Thomas
01:19:12in the second quarter here
01:19:13and the tailback
01:19:14takes the ball upfield
01:19:15for a nifty 15-yard gain
01:19:17allowing the Redskins
01:19:18to get their only score of the day
01:19:20and it's held up so far.
01:19:21Theismann rolls out
01:19:22December 84
01:19:23Gene Sugar
01:19:24if you could catch the ball
01:19:25and watch him bowl over those tacklers
01:19:26he goes in
01:19:27and the Redskins are winning
01:19:28late in the fourth quarter
01:19:29by a score of 7-0.
01:19:31Irv Green Bay
01:19:32is stopping Detroit
01:19:3310-0 in the second quarter.
01:19:35How's the weather in Green Bay?
01:19:37Not very good.
01:19:38It is cold
01:19:39it snowed early this morning
01:19:41trying to chip away the ice
01:19:42so the folks could sit down.
01:19:44Quarterback draw by Whitehurst
01:19:46goes for 19 yards
01:19:48to the Detroit 28.
01:19:51Whitehurst
01:19:52to Steve Odom
01:19:5318-yard gain
01:19:54down to the Detroit 6-yard line.
01:19:57Harrell carried it in
01:19:58for the game's only touchdown.
01:20:00Markle added a field goal.
01:20:01It is 10-0.
01:20:03He was across the line.
01:20:05He broke the plane there
01:20:06so the Lions protested
01:20:07but they did not get the ball.
01:20:08Irv, what about the game we're watching?
01:20:10Irv, as you know
01:20:11the Dallas Cowboys
01:20:12have beaten the Philadelphia Eagles
01:20:13six straight times
01:20:14and of course
01:20:15they're leading now at halftime
01:20:16by a score of 14-7
01:20:17at Texas Stadium.
01:20:18Roger Staubach
01:20:19had a pretty good first half.
01:20:20Here in the first quarter
01:20:21he goes to Billy Joe Dupree
01:20:22who's tied in
01:20:23and takes the ball down
01:20:24to the 1-yard line
01:20:25and Tony Dorsett does the rest.
01:20:26Quick trap inside
01:20:27touchdown
01:20:28and Dallas took a 7-0 lead.
01:20:30The Eagle defense
01:20:31has played well all year long
01:20:32and strong safety Randy Logan
01:20:34in my estimation
01:20:35is one of the best.
01:20:36Here he picks off
01:20:37an interception
01:20:38and Staubach passed it
01:20:39and brings the ball up
01:20:40near midfield
01:20:41giving the offense
01:20:42an opportunity to get off
01:20:43to get started again.
01:20:44Around to work
01:20:45he goes to work
01:20:46going to his running back
01:20:47Mike Hogan.
01:20:48Hogan makes a nifty
01:20:49catch and run here
01:20:5015 yards all the way
01:20:51on this important touchdown
01:20:52and the Eagles
01:20:53close the gap
01:20:54and a score at this point
01:20:55in the second quarter
01:20:56was 7-7.
01:20:57Roger Staubach
01:20:58knows how to get back
01:20:59in a hurry
01:21:00and he goes to his wide receiver
01:21:01Golden Richards.
01:21:02Richards makes a catch
01:21:03takes the ball down
01:21:04to the 15-yard line
01:21:05and from there
01:21:06Staubach goes to the air again.
01:21:07You know who
01:21:08Drew Pearson
01:21:09touchdown
01:21:10and Dallas leads
01:21:1114-7 at halftime.
01:21:12Alright
01:21:135.50 to go in Tampa Bay
01:21:14Chicago has just scored
01:21:15a touchdown
01:21:16they lead it
01:21:1710-0
01:21:18and they figure
01:21:19they're going to be
01:21:20tied with the
01:21:21Minnesota Vikings
01:21:22if the San Francisco
01:21:2349ers keep it up.
01:21:24Here is Plunkett
01:21:25going to Jackson
01:21:26who runs to the
01:21:27Minnesota 23-yard line.
01:21:28Delvin Williams
01:21:29the other half
01:21:30of that tough
01:21:31running combination
01:21:32for the touchdown
01:21:33it was 7-0.
