00:00:00Late in the half, O'Donnell hitting Thigpen six yards for the touchdown to make it a game.
00:00:08The Steelers, as you heard, Bill Cowher hoping to build off the momentum of that final scoring drive of the opening half.
00:00:14Get the ball first to start the second half.
00:00:16Night has fallen in the Valley of the Sun, so we are indeed in prime time in the capital city area of Arizona.
00:00:24Boniol to kick it off and Ernie Mills is deep for the Steelers.
00:00:29A six-point game and a wobbler toward the sidelines goes out of bounds.
00:00:33There's a big break for the Steelers. They're going to get the ball at the 40-yard line.
00:00:37Huge mistake on special teams. All they ask you to do is kick the ball down the field.
00:00:42All day long, they've been trying to kick the ball to the left-hand side, and they've been doing that very well.
00:00:47But when you do that, Dick, if you slip at all, the ball goes out of bounds because you're flirting with the sideline.
00:00:54This puts the ball on the 40-yard line.
00:00:57Let's compare the starting quarterbacks. Troy Aikman, only four hit the ground, one a touchdown pass.
00:01:02Neil O'Donnell, nine for 17, warmed up in the second quarter, and he, too, with a touchdown throw.
00:01:08Both from inside the 10-yard line.
00:01:13Great field position for Pittsburgh at the 40.
00:01:17Van Norse trying to get outside, and Tony Tolbert grabs him by the nape of the neck and waits for help.
00:01:23And Robert Jones is there to support. No game.
00:01:26Well, Tony Tolbert just destroys his play. He gets up the field and just ruins all the blocking that Pittsburgh Steelers have.
00:01:32Right here, you see him get up the field. Now, John L. Williams has to try to block him instead of going down the field
00:01:38and opening the hole up for Eric Pieper. Or for Van Norse, I'm sorry.
00:01:43As Tony Tolbert said, boy, he watched Richie White, the great Green Bay Packer, go off the field after losing two weeks ago.
00:01:49And he said, now I know how important this game is.
00:01:53Dots it off to Van Norse, who catches good passes, and he gets in the open field.
00:01:57He's a bowling ball to the 50-yard line.
00:02:01This is something the Steelers haven't done today.
00:02:04Throw the ball to the back when you send everybody down the field.
00:02:07This time, the wide receivers and tight ends go down. They clear it out.
00:02:11Neil O'Donnell, excellent job dropping off to Van Norse.
00:02:14Really, the only person who has the chance to make the tackle quickly is Robert Jones.
00:02:18And I guarantee you, that was not by design. Van almost dropped the ball, but he picked up the first down.
00:02:23Caught only eight passes all year. First down at the 50.
00:02:26That's the first completion to someone other than a wide receiver.
00:02:31Look at him run over tacklers. Still on his feet. To the 35. Oh my.
00:02:45This whole thing starts with a good block by John L. Williams.
00:02:48So watch John L. Williams come to your left here. You're just going to see him.
00:02:51Coming right there, look at this. Boom. Dixon Edwards just threw it.
00:02:54Darren Smith, he just knocks one out of the hole.
00:02:56And Van Norse, a big man with good feet.
00:02:59Defensive back, do not want to see him get in the secondary.
00:03:02Darren Woodson going to the pro bowl again. Finally made the shirt-tail tackle.
00:03:08That's a low. Van Norse, a 10-yard reception and a 15-yard run.
00:03:13This time, up the middle and not much there.
00:03:16Russell Maryland, the first player picked in the draft of 1991.
00:03:21Dick, I'm not panicking on Dion, but you know, he missed the tackle earlier in the game.
00:03:24But we asked Bam, we said, you know, you get a shot at running the outside.
00:03:27You know, Dion's coming up. You afraid of him? He goes, yeah.
00:03:31He's going to tackle me. He's going to get out of the way.
00:03:34He said he won't even try. He said he'll step aside and run me down and try to force me out of bounds.
00:03:39But he's not going to step up. Let him run by and then grab him from behind.
00:03:43That's it. Second down and nine.
00:03:52Mark Brunner wasn't looking for the pass at the 25-yard line.
00:03:56The ball was by him before he had a wink at it.
00:03:59Dick, if he was looking for it, he wouldn't have caught it.
00:04:02I mean, that baby was gone before he even made the turn and he slips on top of it.
00:04:06That ball's too high.
00:04:07Well, it is. I'll tell you what, look at the hole Mark Brunner has right here.
00:04:10Neil O'Donnell, just a little too pumped up early.
00:04:13There's a big hole right here. The formation and watch Neil right here.
00:04:17He knows it. Just settle down, Neil.
00:04:19Third down and nine. Five wide for the Steelers.
00:04:31They're coming. A quick throw. Incomplete. Andre Hastings.
00:04:35And what a hit by Scott Case.
00:04:38Scott Case takes a shot here.
00:04:40He's waiting for Andre Hastings to go across the middle of the field.
00:04:43And what he does, he's waiting.
00:04:46Well, it's a good job that the Cowboys come on a blitz inside.
00:04:49You're going to see both of these people come.
00:04:51The Steelers cannot pick it up.
00:04:53Scott Case knows that Neil O'Donnell has to get rid of the ball quickly.
00:04:56Does a good job of it.
00:04:57It would be about a 51-yard field goal.
00:04:59So, Phil Cowher not wanting to sacrifice field position brings in Stark.
00:05:03Hoping he can drop it inside the 10.
00:05:06Dion waits.
00:05:09Just a little number that Dion said, let go.
00:05:13And it turns out to be another very short kick for Cowher.
00:05:18Kick out of bounds with that kind of putt.
00:05:20You're a former fronter, Paul McGuire.
00:05:22He didn't give his men downfield a chance.
00:05:24You aim for about the 5 or 10-yard line.
00:05:26And then you pick up that yard.
00:05:28He's got 10 more yards they have to go.
00:05:29You don't kick the ball in the end zone.
00:05:31That is dumb.
00:05:32First down on Dallas.
00:05:33They have stopped Pittsburgh on the first drive of the second half.
00:05:36Leading 13-7.
00:05:37Cowboys have it snipped.
00:05:40Right down to the backfield by Kevin Green and Greg Lloyd.
00:05:48Jim Gray is with us on the sidelines.
00:05:50Alright, thanks, Dick.
00:05:51Well, Emmitt Smith twisted his knee toward the end of the first half.
00:05:54He acknowledged he twisted his knee.
00:05:55Said he went in at halftime.
00:05:57It does hurt him a little bit.
00:05:58But he says basically he's okay.
00:05:59Should be able to fulfill here in the second half.
00:06:02Also, a lot of the Cowboys changed their shoes, according to Barry Switzer.
00:06:05Because just like that last play, they're slipping a lot.
00:06:09Alright, thanks, Jim.
00:06:10A loss of a yard.
00:06:11Second and 11.
00:06:19Over the middle.
00:06:20Michael Irvin breaking tackles.
00:06:23To the 35 on a first down.
00:06:2616 on the play.
00:06:28I tell you, that is just a tremendous mistake by the Steelers.
00:06:34They let Michael Irvin run across the field.
00:06:37With only a linebacker covering.
00:06:38Here's Greg Lloyd.
00:06:39You're going to see on the pass rush right here.
00:06:41Willie gets caught in no man's land.
00:06:43Doesn't know whether it's a speed rush or power rush.
00:06:45So he ends up not being effective.
00:06:46But look at that.
00:06:47They pass him off.
00:06:48Nobody picks him up.
00:06:50Michael Irvin, you must keep a guy looking at him at all times.
00:06:56They try to get him to run outside the Steeler defense.
00:06:59And it results in another negative play for Dallas.
00:07:02Four yard loss.
00:07:03LaVon Kirkland.
00:07:04I said, Dick, this is the biggest linebacker in football.
00:07:07And he is quick.
00:07:08Number 99, LaVon Kirkland.
00:07:10Watch this.
00:07:11The guard goes and he comes right in behind.
00:07:13You're going to see him come in on this play right here.
00:07:15And from behind, he catches Evan Smith.
00:07:18This guy is 263 pounds and can move in that area.
00:07:22Lamar, South Carolina.
00:07:24We asked him how small that is.
00:07:25He said, well, my dad is the minister, the barber, and a janitor.
00:07:31They call LaVon a good reverend doctor.
00:07:35Second and 14 to the sidelines.
00:07:37And Kevin Williams has the catch at the 38-yard line in front of Willie Williams.
00:07:45It will be a third down coming up for Dallas in about seven.
00:07:49Troy Eggman does a good job of seeing the single coverage against Cornell Wake out here.
00:07:53And Kevin Williams makes the cut.
00:07:55But watch him when he comes back for the ball again.
00:07:57A lot of the players are slipping on this field.
00:08:00First catch for Kevin Williams who had 38 on this season and really produced the last four games.
00:08:06They're starting to find him in the giant web.
00:08:10Joe Gibbs said, now you want to double up on Novacek and don't let him beat you.
00:08:19That ball is short.
00:08:20It bounces to Michael Urban.
00:08:22And Eggman hit as he throws because Kevin Green was in his chest.
00:08:29At that time, the Steelers just did an excellent job down the field.
00:08:32Watch the receivers right here.
00:08:33They're both people all over them.
00:08:35The good thing they do, look up top in the slot.
00:08:37They got two defenders looking at the receiver.
00:08:40Excellent job outside by Willie Williams.
00:08:44So, John Jett, who was forced to punt only once in the first half.
00:08:48In, and Andre Hastings back at the 20.
00:08:54Short, short kick.
00:08:56Hastings lets it bounce, and it takes a Pittsburgh bounce.
00:08:59Well covered downfield by Godfrey Miles.
00:09:02The lights are on in Phoenix.
00:09:04What superb hosts the residents of the Valley have been for us.
00:09:08And tonight, eye in the sky coverage courtesy of the Budwon Airship.
00:09:12And Phil, this Bud is for you.
00:09:15Well, thank you, Paul.
00:09:16It's awful nice.
00:09:17It's about time you gave me something.
00:09:19That was a short punt for the Cowboy John Jett of 26 yards.
00:09:25So, the Steelers start at their 36.
00:09:28Playing 500 ball, Neal O'Donnell.
00:09:3010 for 20.
00:09:37Gets something out of a tough situation.
00:09:40A gain of about 3.
00:09:41To the 39, Leon Lipp makes the tackle.
00:09:44You know, I don't understand.
00:09:46I really don't.
00:09:47Why aren't they in 4 and 5 wide?
00:09:49Well, right here, you're going to see the blitz by the Dallas Cowboys.
00:09:52And what they're blitzing for, they just want to stop the first down run.
00:09:55They suffered the last series.
00:09:57Pittsburgh did a good job.
00:09:58This time, blitz stopped the first down run for them.
00:10:01Kevin, when you're completing 9 out of 11, when you're 4 and 5 wide,
00:10:04don't they see that at halftime?
00:10:06Don't they get those stats and understand that this is where they have to be?
00:10:09Cordell Stewart enters the game, slot left.
00:10:13And he takes a handoff.
00:10:16O'Donnell, is he going to throw?
00:10:18He wants to.
00:10:19Nobody opens.
00:10:20And he runs it.
00:10:21And he's at the 47.
00:10:24He does have a first down.
00:10:27And that's a legitimate hit out of bounds, folks.
00:10:29They're not bullied that he got mail going out of bounds.
00:10:31But I want to tell you something.
00:10:32Cordell Stewart, this is what he does for you.
00:10:34They hand him the ball.
00:10:35This was supposed to be thrown downfield at 6'10", I believe.
00:10:38But Cordell, now watch what he does.
00:10:39Watch how quick he makes a decision.
00:10:41Now, get out.
00:10:42Excellent job by John L. Williams staying with the block
00:10:45and giving him a chance to go down the field.
00:10:47And right there, it's a legal hit in bounds.
00:10:51Scott Case makes the hit.
00:10:52And four touches by Stewart.
00:10:54Three of them produce first downs.
00:10:56At the 47.
00:10:59Degran, the ball carrier.
00:11:01Nothing there.
00:11:02Darren Smith saw the play coming and held his ground.
00:11:06You know, you talk about some throwaway plays in the game.
00:11:10Every first down I've watched so far in this game,
00:11:12the Pittsburgh, they have throwaway plays.
00:11:14I don't even know why they're calling these plays.
00:11:16They're not having any success throwing the football
00:11:18in first down either, so.
00:11:19If they go four and five wide, they would.
00:11:24Collin, his old age, is getting very flamboyant.
00:11:26He likes wide-open offenses now.
00:11:28Well, that's what they told us they were going to do.
00:11:30Get out there.
00:11:31Get those people out.
00:11:32He reverts back to those AFL days, you know.
00:11:37And Stewart again in the game in motion.
00:11:39What's that?
00:11:40The throw to Stewart incomplete.
00:11:43Scott Case is tagging him again.
00:11:47Scott Case is just having a good time.
00:11:49He just likes to tag people.
00:11:50You catch the ball, you're going to get hit.
00:11:52That's his job.
00:11:53But look at the blitz by the Dallas Cowboys right there.
00:11:55Neil O'Donnell has to get rid of it quick.
00:11:57Cordell Stewart just not ready for the football to come out there that fast.
00:12:01You might as well catch it.
00:12:02You're going to get a lick anyway.
00:12:04Went to Oklahoma.
00:12:05Recruited by Barry Switzer.
00:12:07Now in his 12th year in the league.
00:12:13Four wide with a back.
00:12:15Joining O'Donnell.
00:12:19Blitz.
00:12:20O'Donnell over the middle.
00:12:21Intercepted wide open is Larry Brown.
00:12:24No one near him.
00:12:26And Brown takes it inside the 20 to the 18.
00:12:30Well, I'll tell you what.
00:12:31The Speedos do a wonderful job.
00:12:33They pick up the blitz perfectly.
00:12:36Everybody is stopped.
00:12:37Neil O'Donnell has time.
00:12:39And watch what he does.
00:12:41This is Neil O'Donnell's fault.
00:12:43Larry Brown really does not even cover anybody.
00:12:46He just stands there.
00:12:49Larry Brown is on the outside.
00:12:50Watch the receiver come down.
00:12:52He's wide open.
00:12:53Neil O'Donnell stands in there.
00:12:55Look at it.
00:12:56Larry Brown lets him go.
00:12:57And Neil O'Donnell panics in the pocket.
00:13:00Thinks he's going to get hit.
00:13:02And that's one of the reasons why the ball gets away from him.
00:13:04Look at the time he had to throw the ball.
00:13:06And you're talking about the offensive line just did a magnificent job of picking up the blitz.
00:13:12And then O'Donnell throws the ball away.
00:13:14You can see O'Donnell throwing while falling back.
00:13:16And the pass was high.
00:13:18First turnover of the game.
00:13:19The Cowboys at the 18.
00:13:21Aikman looking for the strike early.
00:13:24He finds his man inside the two.
00:13:28Michael Irvin.
00:13:29Darren Perry chased him out of the two.
00:13:32The Steelers, they do a good job of recognizing the play.
00:13:36They're in perfect position.
00:13:37But Troy Aikman just buys some time right here.
00:13:40Michael Irvin does a good job of just getting outside of Darren Perry.
00:13:44And it's an excellent throw by Troy Aikman on the run.
00:13:47You know, the Pittsburgh Steelers in the first half.
00:13:50Ball kicked out of bounds.
00:13:51They get it on the 40.
00:13:52They have a chance to do something downfield.
00:13:53They don't do it.
00:13:54Here they have another chance, an opportunity.
00:13:56And the offense, twice now, is giving the ball back to Dallas.
00:13:59And that will beat your defense in a heartbeat.
00:14:02Ball just outside the one-yard line.
00:14:04First and goal.
00:14:06Emmitt Smith.
00:14:08Second effort.
00:14:09Is he in?
00:14:10No signal yet.
00:14:11They're marking now.
00:14:12Touchdown, Dallas!
00:14:19Emmitt Smith.
00:14:20117th career touchdown.
00:14:23100 in the regular season.
00:14:26And 17 now, postseason play.
00:14:28All right, here comes Emmitt Smith.
00:14:30Now, this is all power.
00:14:31You're two yards out.
00:14:32You've got that big offensive line.
00:14:33Emmitt has stopped here.
00:14:35His continuous effort.
00:14:36Look, and he is turned back by Carnell Lake.
00:14:38And then he moves in here.
00:14:39He's down.
00:14:40That is not a touchdown.
00:14:41But tell you right now, the ball doesn't go over the goal line until after.
00:14:45And the whistle should have been blown.
00:14:47Michael Irvin said, hey, I should have had the touchdown.
00:14:49You saw the pregame show.
00:14:50They got a little wager going.
00:14:52Whoever gets the most touchdowns in this game.
00:14:56Wins a sizable wager.
00:15:00Try for a point.
00:15:05And Bono knocks it through.
00:15:0620-7.
00:15:10Costlier by O'Donnell.
00:15:11And an expensive souvenir for someone, Emmitt Smith.
00:15:14That one goes into the storage with 117 others.
00:15:18And he's only 26 years old.
00:15:22Fourth career Super Bowl touchdown.
00:15:24To tie the record.
00:15:26Oh, what a costly throw by O'Donnell.
00:15:31That's down the middle.
00:15:32Good and high.
00:15:33And that's at the 8.
00:15:38Returns to the 26 and flags all over.
00:15:41That's usually against the returning team.
00:15:44The returning team.
00:15:54Sorting it out.
00:15:55The flags in two different spots.
00:15:59And holding against Pittsburgh.
00:16:03Brendan Stein, number 68, was on the kickoff return team.
00:16:06And they kind of looked at him.
00:16:07I don't know if it was him or not.
00:16:08During the return.
00:16:09Holding number 54 by the receivers.
00:16:1210 yards.
00:16:13First down at 10.
00:16:15That's a timeout.
00:16:17Dante Jones.
00:16:19Guilty of the error.
00:16:20You're watching the Super Bowl on NBC.
00:16:26What's going through Greg Lloyd's mind?
00:16:28Phil Simms so close.
00:16:30The Steelers seem to have momentum.
00:16:31That one big play.
00:16:32Well, Dick, they did have momentum.
00:16:34Everything was kind of going their way.
00:16:36And the Cowboys blitz.
00:16:38The Steelers do an awesome job of picking it up.
00:16:40But they make the big mistake.
00:16:41Neal overthrows the receiver to Larry Brown.
00:16:44And now the penalty on the kickoff return.
00:16:46First down at the 15 for Pittsburgh.
00:16:48Six and a half minutes left in the third quarter.
00:16:50O'Donnell.
00:16:52Lose the rest, but then down he goes.
00:16:54A sack at the 10-yard line.
00:16:55Chad Hemmings was there along with Hervin McCormick.
00:17:02Well, sometimes as a corner in this league, you get a little lucky.
00:17:05Larry Brown does not even follow his receiver inside.
00:17:08Neal O'Donnell.
00:17:09Stands.
00:17:10Throws it right to him.
00:17:11Good return.
00:17:12Then they come back.
00:17:13They throw one to Michael Earp.
00:17:14Watch him.
00:17:15He'll break inside on Perry.
00:17:16Or outside.
00:17:17And then there's the first down.
00:17:19And Emmitt Smith obviously goes in to score.
00:17:22Dwight, I don't think he scores.
00:17:23Second and 14.
00:17:26It's the second sack for Chad Hemmings in the game.
00:17:28But again, it's a down.
00:17:31Moore swipes his way up to the 18-yard line.
00:17:34Where it'll be third and long.
00:17:36And long.
00:17:37Leon Lett credited with the tackle.
00:17:46He didn't get part of his game plan from the Kansas City Chiefs today.
00:17:50No, I don't think so, Paul.
00:17:52I'm telling you, it's mind-boggling.
00:17:58Third down.
00:17:59Eight.
00:18:04Four wide.
00:18:07Five.
00:18:08Four.
00:18:09Three.
00:18:10Two.
00:18:11One.
00:18:12That's the bat clamp again.
00:18:13Andre Hastings dragging that first and nine.
00:18:16They have gotten the first down with that second effort.
00:18:19Excellent job of the Cowboys and the philosophy.
00:18:22Blitzo making throws to the hot receiver out in the fight.
00:18:25In other words, Steelers cannot pick it up.
00:18:27You'll see the blitz coming.
00:18:29Neil O'Donnell does a good job of getting rid of it.
00:18:31Make the tackle.
00:18:32No first down.
00:18:33Andre Hastings showing his strength.
00:18:35Gets it to a first down.
00:18:36That's why he's their top third down receiver on this season.
00:18:42That's John L. Williams and a rare carry for the veteran from Florida.
00:18:47In his tenth season, used primarily as a blocker and pass receiver.
00:18:51And the Cowboys stopped him for no gain.
00:18:54You're in a hurry-up offense, and if you're going to do that,
00:18:56you're keeping people off the field.
00:18:58You better take a look at some hot receivers downfield.
00:19:01They're in a nickel-baits, they call it.
00:19:03The Cowboys' seven defensive backs.
00:19:05Throw to the sidelines.
00:19:06A nice fingertip catch by Hastings again.
00:19:09That's out of bounds at the 35, where it'll be third and short two.
00:19:17You look at the stats at half-time,
00:19:19and then I'm going to end this whole thing about the three, four, five wide field.
00:19:22But when you look at it, everybody's got to take a look at stats
00:19:25because they all get them.
00:19:26And they see that this is effective when we're in four and five wide.
00:19:29They're even fooling around with the running game.
00:19:31People say you have to have the running game to win.
00:19:33Not when your passing game is working.
00:19:35Then you use your passing game.
00:19:37Four and a half minutes remain in the third quarter.
00:19:39The Dallas Cowboys leading Pittsburgh Steelers 20-7, Super Bowl XXX.
00:19:45Four down and short.
00:19:48No, that's Eric Pegram, rather, with the boss.
00:19:51Pegram, who played at Atlanta and once had a 1,000-yard season.
00:19:55That was two years ago.
00:19:57Has the first down.
00:19:59It's a good call here by the Steelers.
00:20:01They don't have to run inside.
00:20:02What they do, they bring the receiver down inside.
00:20:04Watch him.
00:20:05He's supposed to crack on the shot they called in 96.
00:20:07He doesn't do it.
00:20:08Eric Pegram does a good job of changing instead of going outside,
00:20:12cutting back inside for a big first down.
00:20:14Did you see Mills ducking out of the way?
00:20:18Pegram will go to bed every night with a smile
00:20:20and watching his videos of Sanford inside.
00:20:25They got him.
00:20:26Boy, what a nice catch by Mills.
00:20:29That ball, again, wasn't on target, but Mills went out and got it.
00:20:32Brock Marion, the defender, an 8-yard gain.
00:20:35I'll tell you one thing right now.
00:20:36They better be glad these guys have got some great hands
00:20:38because O'Donnell has not been on target.
00:20:40And we're not beating him down.
00:20:41It's just the fact that where he's throwing the football.
00:20:43This guy's open.
00:20:44I mean, they're throwing the ball high and wide.
00:20:46When you keep doing that, you're going to get something tipped and picked off.
00:20:50Ernie Mills, who had a brilliant game in the thriller
00:20:55against the Colts in the AFC Championship.
00:20:57Made the big defensive play.
00:20:59Remember, reaching in, breaking up the interception of Correa.
00:21:05And lost.
00:21:06It was a bad rebound by Darren Smith.
00:21:08And Smith rides him down short of the first down.
00:21:11It'll be third and two.
00:21:13No gain.
00:21:15It was an excellent job by Darren Smith right there of seeing the draw play.
00:21:19You're going to see him up top watching, read the draw,
00:21:21and comes up and makes the tackle.
00:21:24Darren, who didn't sign.
00:21:25Remember, he held out at the start of the season
00:21:27and had to work his way into shape.
00:21:29Probably their fastest linebacker.
00:21:31They did some dealing in the offensive line,
00:21:33and John Jackson just misses the block.
00:21:35If he makes the block, Van Morris is still running with the football.
00:21:40Third and a yard and a half.
00:21:43He's going to do it again.
00:21:45He's going to do it again.
00:21:47He's going to do it again.
00:21:49He's going to do it again.
00:21:51And he has stopped.
00:21:54What a hit.
00:21:56Tony Tolbert was in on the tackle along with Brock Marion.
00:22:00Well, the one bad thing about that call and that situation,
00:22:03you do not have a lead blocker.
00:22:05So if the linebacker comes free right there,
00:22:07there's nobody there to help the runner.
00:22:09Fourth and no game, so it's a yard and a half.
00:22:12And Bill Cowher is going to gamble and go for it here
00:22:15with less than two minutes remaining in the third.
00:22:18You know why he's going for it?
00:22:19Because his defense is playing very well.
00:22:21His offense is struggling.
00:22:23They need a lift.
00:22:24He knows his defense is solid now.
00:22:26What do you go for here?
00:22:32Not a chance.
00:22:33Not a chance.
00:22:34The Cowboys take over on downs.
00:22:38You made one of the great points just a moment ago.
00:22:41If you're going to run that guy up in there,
00:22:43you better have a lead blocker that can block somebody.
00:22:45When you have only one guy in the backfield
00:22:47and you're going to run the football,
00:22:49they know that he's the only guy that can get the football.
00:22:52Here's that fourth down play after they were second and two,
00:22:55third and two, fourth and two.
00:22:57Well, look at this.
00:22:58You've got four linemen, four people right here,
00:23:00all inside the tackle box.
00:23:02There's really no chance for Pittsburgh to pick up this first down.
00:23:06We can see right there, everybody collapses inside.
00:23:08Nowhere to run.
00:23:10It's all over on downs.
00:23:12Dallas has it at the 47.
00:23:14It's Smith breaking tackles.
00:23:16They had him for a loss,
00:23:18and he leaves five men in his wake before Greg Lloyd can get him.
00:23:22You know what amazing on that play?
00:23:23Ray Seals, Green, and Kirkland all have him in the backfield.
00:23:30Here it comes right here.
00:23:32Here's Seals.
00:23:33He misses.
00:23:34Here's Green pushing him into Kirkland.
00:23:35Kirkland misses again, and Emmitt Smith picks up six yards,
00:23:39almost six yards on the play.
00:23:42There, Kevin Williams right,
00:23:44and then Michael Irvin to the left as Emmitt Smith, the lineman,
00:23:49will have a check in motion.
00:23:51Quick throw to Irvin.
00:23:53Almost intercepted.
00:23:55Greg Lloyd.
00:23:57Excellent job by Greg Lloyd.
00:23:58He sees the quick drop by Troy Aikman.
00:24:00He stands right there and just looks for the quick throw.
00:24:04Watch him.
00:24:05He sees the quick drop, jumps up, almost has it in both hands.
00:24:10Is that an athletic move or what?
00:24:13I mean, that ball, he's just reading Troy Aikman perfectly.
00:24:16Look at that.
00:24:17Hits him right in the hands,
00:24:18and he had a second chance on the way down.
00:24:20Yeah, that's beautiful.
00:24:21Troy Aikman throws that quick slam.
00:24:23That baby's humming.
00:24:25Third and long four.
00:24:27Troy Aikman.
00:24:38Good play by Ron Woodson as he defended Michael Irvin.
00:24:41So, Ron Woodson, many thought he'd never play this year,
00:24:45and he worked and worked after that knee surgery after the first game of the season,
00:24:49and he made one of those typical great corner plays.
00:24:52Look at Ron Woodson right here.
00:24:54Single covers on the outside by Michael Irvin.
00:24:56A good plant, and if that ball is thrown to the outside,
00:25:00he's going to intercept it.
00:25:04John Jett points in the punt.
00:25:10Hastings at the 10-yard line.
00:25:18Wow, what a quick, beautiful spiral.
00:25:20It's going to go into the end zone.
00:25:2421-net, Pittsburgh will start at the 20-yard line.
00:25:28There it is, the National Football League climaxes in this Super Bowl XXX.
00:25:32You know, I say one thing about field goal kickers getting 50 bucks.
00:25:35You've got two punters here that should get about a quarter.
00:25:40Tough to play tonight, Paul.
00:25:42You've got to put the ball out of bounds and give your champion a chance.
00:25:45Final minute of the game.
00:25:50Sidelines for a first down across the 30.
00:25:53You see what Deion Sanders says?
00:25:55Deion Sanders, my fault.
00:25:56Now, here's the play here.
00:25:57He's way off, and as Deion walks back to the huddle,
00:26:00he just looks at his teammates and says, it's my fault.
00:26:03What a move.
00:26:04Outside, he's given up.
00:26:06Did short stuff out and in.
00:26:08He has a tough time with.
00:26:09Don't try to run with him.
00:26:11Pickup of 12, 20 seconds left in the quarter.
00:26:15Atlas leading 20-7.
00:26:21Good pickup on first down out to the 37-yard line,
00:26:24where Shantae Carter, who played here with the Sun Devils of Arizona State,
00:26:29makes the tackle.
00:26:33The Dallas Cowboys trying to put their stamp on the 1990s,
00:26:37winning three Super Bowls in four years
00:26:39and winning without their beloved coach, Jimmy Johnson, who was fired a year ago.
00:26:43Jerry Jones, the owner, hiring Barry Switzer.
00:26:47And Switzer is a quarter away of winning his first Super Bowl title.
00:26:53Here we go now, second and a short six.
00:26:57Van Morse up the middle.
00:26:5945 to the 49.
00:27:01Great open field tackle by Scott Case.
00:27:03A gain of 12.
00:27:05We're talking about some great footwork now.
00:27:07Oh, absolutely.
00:27:08A good read here.
00:27:09Watch on the outside.
00:27:10You're going to see Shantae Carter come inside.
00:27:12Van Morse, excellent job.
00:27:13Breaks outside and inside.
00:27:15And like we said earlier, Paul, such a big man,
00:27:18but light feet and quick feet enables him to make those quick reads.
00:27:22I swear, when he sat down with us at a meeting, Dick, the other day,
00:27:24when I said to you guys, this guy is already ready to play
00:27:28and nothing's going to bother him.
00:27:33First down has not been a good down for the Steelers.
00:27:35They're averaging two yards on every first down in this game.
00:27:39Oh!
00:27:40Does that rule the fumble?
00:27:42If it is, it is a Pittsburgh ball at the 35.
00:27:46Still no official signal.
00:27:48Someone's got to make a call.
00:27:49Ernie Mills was drilled by Scott Case, a hitter.
00:27:53They're going to call it catch and fumble.
00:27:56He caught the pair.
00:27:57The big question is, did he get his feet on the ground?
00:28:00You have to get both feet down, Dick, and have control of the ball.
00:28:04Now, here's what they're talking about,
00:28:05because the official on the other side never said anything.
00:28:08He gets both feet down on the catch.
00:28:10Watch him right here.
00:28:11You see Emil O'Donnell?
00:28:13Here it is.
00:28:15It's a catch.
00:28:16First down.
00:28:18He did indeed get one two down.
00:28:20And the Steelers avoid another big turnover
00:28:23as the ball is recovered by Mark Bruner, the rookie tight end.
00:28:27Look at this hit by Scott Case.
00:28:29That is sensational.
00:28:30And then heads up play by the tight end, Bruner.
00:28:33They get the first down at the 35.
00:28:35He was the only other black jersey downfield in a sea of white.
00:28:39First down at the 35.
00:28:40Right on the second.
00:28:42Receiver at Van Morris.
00:28:44And a whistle down by Darren Woodson.
00:28:46And Woodson is a superb safety.
00:28:49215 pounds playing in his home city.
00:28:52High school star here in Phoenix.
00:28:54Well, Scott Case is having a big day hitting these receivers
00:28:57and runners down the field.
00:28:58Right there, just runs through the receiver.
00:29:01And the Steelers, of course, very fortunate.
00:29:03Mark Bruner is alert and hustling on the play.
00:29:06There's Case.
00:29:08He came to Dallas this year as an unrestricted free agent from the Atlanta Falcons.
00:29:12188 pounds, and he's going around the league as a hitter.
00:29:16Second down and eight.
00:29:20Down there.
00:29:22Less time.
00:29:25And it's complete to Ernie Mills.
00:29:27Oh, was that very nearly intercepted by Larry Brown.
00:29:31Brown was just a short step away from his second pick.
00:29:35I'm going to tell you something right now.
00:29:37Whether he can throw this ball or not, I don't know, Phil.
00:29:39But I'm going to tell you, when he rolls this thing out,
00:29:41you want to talk about some velocity on the ball.
00:29:43Look at this baby get there.
00:29:44Brown wasn't as close as it looked from up here.
00:29:47But when you see it from the end zone, Dick,
00:29:48I'm going to tell you something.
00:29:49That ball was perfect.
00:29:51They're in another third down situation here.
00:29:53Third and three.
00:29:55They go to the nickel baits.
00:29:56Gold baits.
00:29:58Comes in as a linebacker.
00:29:59Defensive back, seven.
00:30:01That signals seven defensive backs on the field for the Cowboys.
00:30:05Spread formation.
00:30:07Here they come.
00:30:08Here they come.
00:30:09First to think tank.
00:30:10First down at the 21.
00:30:13Boy, are they picking up the blitzes.
00:30:15They had a blitz on that again,
00:30:16and this offense is picking up and giving that man time to throw the football.
00:30:23Excellent job by Neil O'Donnell, picking the right side.
00:30:26He goes to the right with a single coverage.
00:30:28And you see Larry Brown, they're playing these inside routes.
00:30:31They know the Steelers love them on third down,
00:30:33but they execute them so well, you can't stop them.
00:30:36Pittsburgh stays in the four line.
00:30:39O'Donnell dunks it off to John L. Williams,
00:30:42and John L. to the 19-yard line.
00:30:44A short game.
00:30:45Darren Woodson, yet another tackle.
00:30:48And Woodson is one of the Cowboys who will be an unrestricted free agent,
00:30:52and he's valued as one of the top two or three safeties in the entire NFL.
00:31:03To the end zone, an incomplete Cordell Stewart covered by Woodson.
00:31:08Darren Woodson had his hands all over Cordell Stewart down the field.
00:31:12The Cowboys come on another blitz,
00:31:14and the Steelers pick it up.
00:31:16Watch Darren Woodson has Cordell Stewart one-on-one.
00:31:19Neil O'Donnell looks right, comes back left.
00:31:23Slightly overthrown.
00:31:25So very close to Neil O'Donnell.
00:31:28Just a little too far outside.
00:31:31Yeah, but now you're looking at a third and eight.
00:31:33And, you know, when you're down by 13,
00:31:37I don't see four down here.
00:31:39I still see kick the field ball because it still put you within ten.
00:31:43The Steelers in what would appear to be a must-score position.
00:31:47A touchdown would pull them within six.
00:31:50A field goal would make it very difficult.
00:31:52Charles Haley returns.
00:31:56Third and eight from the 19-yard line.
00:31:58Tenth play of the drive.
00:32:02Shot down O'Donnell.
00:32:06Score to Wilson.
00:32:09Breaks down, and Haley has another sack.
00:32:14His second today.
00:32:16Yeah, but I'm saying the guy that should have gotten the sack is old Russell Maryland.
00:32:19Russell Maryland was flying inside,
00:32:22and he's the guy that gets the first shot.
00:32:24Haley's going to end up with the sack for number 67.
00:32:27He comes in now.
00:32:28Here comes Haley.
00:32:29Look at him.
00:32:30There he is.
00:32:31Russell Maryland is there.
00:32:32Haley doesn't get really good.
00:32:33No way.
00:32:34Tony Tolbert was the man who finally wrapped him up.
00:32:37So Tolbert with the fourth Dallas sack today,
00:32:39and that makes this a tougher chance for Johnson.
00:32:42Forty-six yards for the veteran.
00:32:47Stark to hold.
00:32:50Plenty of leg.
00:32:51Johnson connects from 46.
00:32:56Johnson.
00:33:06Onside kick.
00:33:08And it's picked up by the Pittsburgh.
00:33:11Demon figures.
00:33:12Picks it up, and it's Pittsburgh's goal at the 50-yard line.
00:33:18We were alerted to this before the game, and right there,
00:33:21Dixon Edwards was already taken off before the ball was kicked.
00:33:26That's where the reason the Steelers had the courage to call it in this
00:33:30situation, and it was executed perfectly.
00:33:33That's a case of the other man on that outside leaving too soon.
00:33:38I mean, here comes Demon figures.
00:33:40And watch this.
00:33:41He knows it's coming.
00:33:42He sees it.
00:33:43He reads the ball.
00:33:44And the most important thing now, I've got to get in.
00:33:46Boy, it bounces right on his hip.
00:33:48And I'll tell you what, you can pick it up.
00:33:51That was beautiful.
00:33:52You cannot advance.
00:33:53It gets marked at the 47-yard line.
00:33:55Pittsburgh has the 12th onside kick in Super Bowl history,
00:33:59and only the fourth time successfully.
00:34:02Successful is the path to hate things.
00:34:04And the first down.
00:34:06And the down is 41.
00:34:09Here comes the onside kick again, folks.
00:34:11So you can understand.
00:34:12I mean, look at this ball.
00:34:14And figures, it hits it right on the hip.
00:34:15There's absolutely nobody out there.
00:34:17But we knew that they were going to try it.
00:34:19They wanted to do it in the first half.
00:34:21Off a scoring play that it didn't have a chance.
00:34:24Pass is high again.
00:34:26And what a catch by Hastings.
00:34:28The receivers for Neal O'Donnell have been brilliant.
00:34:32Fantastic is the word.
00:34:34Brilliant, Dick.
00:34:35You're right.
00:34:36You see him up in the slot right there.
00:34:37Andre Hastings goes high, catches the ball in the second try.
00:34:41Something about that number 88 in the black uniform.
00:34:4582 was, of course, John Stallworth.
00:34:47Another top two receivers here.
00:34:49Hastings and a thick pin.
00:34:52And this is Ernie Mills.
00:34:53Thick pins hurt him.
00:35:01That's Ernie Mills.
00:35:02Ernie Mills got whacked that time by Larry Brown.
00:35:07But they've been hooking up perfectly on all of these plays.
00:35:11And now it seems O'Donnell has settled down.
00:35:14And it took three quarters and a little more just to do it.
00:35:17But there haven't been many passes that have been below the shoulders of his receivers.
00:35:21No, not many.
00:35:22You're right, Dick.
00:35:23Here's a good look at Larry Brown coming up, making the hit.
00:35:26And he hits him in the back of the head.
00:35:28And pushed that left knee, got twisted underneath.
00:35:31And, of course, an injury to one of the Steelers that punishes them in that 4-5 wide.
00:35:38We'll take a timeout with 10-16 left in the fourth.
00:35:44Ernie Mills with his eighth catch, but the injured knee as they attend to him.
00:35:49Ball at the 22-yard line.
00:35:51Another big effort from Mills, who was the leading touchdown man of the receivers of the Steelers.
00:35:57Had eight touchdown catches, and Emmitt Smith, his teammate at the University of Florida,
00:36:01was one of the first men on the field to make sure Ernie was okay.
00:36:06Second and two.
00:36:07Steelers trail 20-10.
00:36:10Ten minutes left in the fourth period.
00:36:13That was a bad loss.
00:36:14And that was only the first down of the 17.
00:36:18So much for the blowout, boys.
00:36:19Back again.
00:36:20We got the football game at home.
00:36:22I mean, that, the onside kick was terrific.
00:36:25But I'll tell you something right now.
00:36:27This team is now fired up offensively.
00:36:29And all you need is one little spark to do that.
00:36:31And once that puts it in perspective, the defense, they know they're holding them.
00:36:34The offense now, they're getting off the ball.
00:36:38At the 17-yard line.
00:36:40Cordell Stewart to the left of Masrath.
00:36:43Thigpen wide left.
00:36:45Hastings wide right.
00:36:48Morrison motion.
00:36:52Morris.
00:36:54And we lose his forward momentum to come back and get the ball,
00:36:58so he didn't have that charge going upfield.
00:37:01You know, he's a tough man to break down.
00:37:03Bam Morris, not only does he catch the ball and he gets hit,
00:37:05but watch Scott Case at the end of this, baby.
00:37:07He jumps on his back and he still can't get him down.
00:37:09Here it is.
00:37:10He checks off on the outside.
00:37:12Hits Bam Morris.
00:37:13Rackles up and hits.
00:37:14So watch Scott Case on top.
00:37:16He's going to ride it a little bit.
00:37:17Nothing.
00:37:19Ball at the 11.
00:37:20A gain of 6 on the play.
00:37:25And 15 remaining.
00:37:26O'Donnell.
00:37:28Almost perfect the last two drives.
00:37:33Looks to the end zone.
00:37:34Throws underneath.
00:37:35Thigpen.
00:37:37Down at the 5.
00:37:38It hangs on.
00:37:39Dixon Edwards.
00:37:41Almost dislodged his shoulders from his hips.
00:37:45And he did not let the ball go.
00:37:47What can you say about these wide receivers?
00:37:49Watch Anthony Thigpen.
00:37:51He's coming all the way across the field right here.
00:37:54Neil O'Donnell hangs in there and throws it in tight coverage.
00:37:57And what a hit by Dixon Edwards.
00:38:01Edwards just drops his shoulder.
00:38:02Watch his shoulder hit him right here.
00:38:03He'll drop it.
00:38:04Bam.
00:38:05That's how you hit that big bag, Jack.
00:38:07First and goal at the 5.
00:38:12And that saves it to the 2-yard line.
00:38:16Dixon Edwards makes another tackle.
00:38:18It was Morris who scored the winning touchdown against the Colts in the AFC Championship.
00:38:23And like another man named Bam, remember Sam Bam Cunningham had the same nickname.
00:38:29They're best down inside that 2-yard line.
00:38:31You figure he'll get him.
00:38:33They're bringing some big lumps in now.
00:38:34They've got Parrish is in there and he's reported.
00:38:37So obviously 79, James Parrish will be on the line of scrimmage.
00:38:40But if you're going to keep Bam in there and give him the ball, they're doing the right thing now.
00:38:44Now they've got John L. Williams up in there with him.
00:38:46Second and goal.
00:38:47Morris with 71 yards rushing to lead all goal carriers.
00:38:53Gets to the end zone.
00:38:54Breaks his tackle.
00:38:56Touchdown!
00:38:57Or is it?
00:38:58They haven't marked it yet.
00:38:59No, they mark it down at the 1-foot line.
00:39:03Very much like the Emmett Smith play.
00:39:06The official on the Parrish line waiting and waiting.
00:39:09And then this time marking it.
00:39:10Paul, when you're a big running back like Bam Morris is, you cannot tackle him high right there.
00:39:15You saw Dixon Edwards get a chance.
00:39:17Goes high.
00:39:18That's a touchdown.
00:39:19The ball had broken the plane of the goal line.
00:39:22But no touchdown call.
00:39:24I would give it to him one more time.
00:39:28Knows who the ball tickles the goal line on.
00:39:30Third and goal.
00:39:33Moves on and scores.
00:39:35Touchdown!
00:39:37Morris.
00:39:38Stands at the 1-foot line.
00:39:40Man, was that beautiful.
00:39:41Just to John L. Williams' clock on the outside.
00:40:04So the Pittsburgh Steelers and young Bill Tower down 20-7 in this fourth quarter.
00:40:11Kick a field goal and then execute the onside kick.
00:40:14And that leads to Bam Morris' touchdown.
00:40:17This to pull the Steelers to a number 3.
00:40:20It's 20-17.
00:40:28Well, it all started with the onside kick.
00:40:30This is what turned this game around.
00:40:32For the Pittsburgh Steelers.
00:40:34Right here.
00:40:35Look up top there.
00:40:36Dixon Edwards taking off before the ball was kicked.
00:40:39And the Steelers doing an excellent job of executing.
00:40:44And then you actually think that how about this clutch reception under punishment.
00:40:49Well, these receivers are tough.
00:40:51They're used to blocking down the field last year for the running game.
00:40:54Now they're making the catches down the field.
00:40:56And Bam John L. Williams seals the corner.
00:41:00And Bam Morris walks in.
00:41:03That block that time with John L. Williams on miles.
00:41:06Dr. Miles was just beautiful.
00:41:08And look at Bill Tower.
00:41:09Yeah.
00:41:10One point.
00:41:13Kay Cowher.
00:41:14Daughter of Megan.
00:41:16Leading the cheers.
00:41:21And O'Donnell who has had an up and down afternoon.
00:41:28Five for five on the drive.
00:41:30And plenty of time.
00:41:316.36 left.
00:41:33A field goal game.
00:41:35And the Steeler defense in this second half has been very stingy.
00:41:41You know where Dixon Edwards is now?
00:41:42He may be offside.
00:41:43Yeah, that's right.
00:41:44That's right.
00:41:45He could be across the 40s.
00:41:47You think he's going anywhere?
00:41:49Now he's up right hugging that 40-yard line.
00:41:51You're not going anywhere, son.
00:41:54They're not going to try it again, would you think?
00:41:56No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
00:41:59But that was a great kick by Norm Johnson.
00:42:01You know, he had to hit that ball just perfectly.
00:42:06Boy, does he hit this one deep.
00:42:09And he wins.
00:42:10Bob Lewis picks it up at the 8.
00:42:14And he's in trouble now at the 12.
00:42:20The Steeler fans on their feet.
00:42:23Brent McAfee makes the tackle.
00:42:25And Dallas will start from the 12.
00:42:28Well, we've had a chance to do six Steeler football games this year.
00:42:31And one thing we have learned, regardless of how the game goes,
00:42:35they will fight from start to finish.
00:42:37And that's what we have seen in the second half.
00:42:41And Norm Johnson has played a major part.
00:42:43A long field goal, 46 yards.
00:42:46And the onside kick execution.
00:42:49Dick, I told you at the beginning.
00:42:51These guys believe that they're in a straight fight.
00:42:53And they know what they have to do.
00:42:55And when you tell the Pittsburgh Steelers they can't do something,
00:42:57you've told the wrong team.
00:42:59You see how the Pittsburgh Steeler defense has shut down the Dallas offense.
00:43:04Hickman to throw it from deep in his own end.
00:43:06And to Kevin Williams, ducks over the top.
00:43:08And he's all the way to the 34.
00:43:12What a big play for the Cowboys.
00:43:1522 yards.
00:43:16You know, Kevin Green moved outside and was sitting on Williams.
00:43:19And watch what he does.
00:43:20He lets him inside.
00:43:21You've got to keep him from going inside.
00:43:24It's a cardinal sin for a linebacker to throw out on a receiver in the slot like that
00:43:29and let him go inside.
00:43:31Once he goes inside, the safety,
00:43:33Mayerville cannot get up there quick enough to help out.
00:43:36What a good throw.
00:43:37Under six minutes to play.
00:43:39Dallas by three.
00:43:46And Smith stops at the 35-yard line.
00:43:50And Emmitt, one of the men figured to be the big star in this Super Bowl 30,
00:43:55has been shackled in this game.
00:43:58Very little yardage.
00:43:59Dick, they're stopping the running game now.
00:44:01We're not standing up there trying to play these guys,
00:44:03these big offensive linemen, man-to-man.
00:44:05They're using their speed, moving around.
00:44:07And the Cowboys just can't get enough helmet and equipment on them.
00:44:12Last 11 carries six yards.
00:44:15As you see, Irvin McCormick being taken back for some medical attention.
00:44:20Backup defensive end for Dallas.
00:44:23Second and ninth.
00:44:28A complex call for the 25.
00:44:31The sack by Kirkland.
00:44:33LeBlanc Kirkland.
00:44:34Let me say one thing about LeBlanc Kirkland.
00:44:36When he walked into us the other day and I said to LeBlanc,
00:44:39and we always talk about the unsung hero of this defense.
00:44:41They talk about Lloyd.
00:44:42They talk about Green.
00:44:44But you better start talking about 99s.
00:44:46Because look at that.
00:44:47Over the blocker and knocks Aikman back.
00:44:49When we asked him, we said, you know, LeBlanc,
00:44:52how do you feel about taking a back seat?
00:44:54He said, I don't care.
00:44:55I know my role.
00:44:56And that's his role.
00:44:57Right there.
00:44:58Get him.
00:44:59Boy, Aikman jolted like he took a right cross.
00:45:02Got on his heels and he fumbles an eight-yard loss.
00:45:05Third and 17.
00:45:12Aikman down the middle.
00:45:14Incomplete.
00:45:16Kevin Williams wants interference as he went down at the 45.
00:45:20No flag.
00:45:21Pittsburgh is held.
00:45:23He was slipping.
00:45:24He was slipping and he got tripped up, I think,
00:45:26with Rod Woodson in his feet.
00:45:28Is it Woodson?
00:45:29Is it Lake?
00:45:30Watch this.
00:45:31He goes to the inside.
00:45:32He's slipping.
00:45:33That's a good play.
00:45:34There's no pass interference there.
00:45:36Little hand check from Carnell Lake.
00:45:38If you're a Dallas fan, you'd think there was contact.
00:45:40So in the punt is John Jett.
00:45:42Four and a half minutes to play.
00:45:44Andre Hastings at the 32-yard line.
00:45:47Beautiful spin.
00:45:50Hastings back pedals to the 25.
00:45:5340.
00:45:56And down at the 43.
00:45:5948-yard punt.
00:46:01Heat on the return.
00:46:03Very swift play.
00:46:05Punt.
00:46:06Heat on the return.
00:46:07Mary switches.
00:46:08Cowboys lead early, 13-0, 20-7 their lead after three periods.
00:46:13But Pittsburgh has scored ten points in this final quarter.
00:46:17And the Steelers have the ball with four minutes, 15 seconds remaining.
00:46:21And they'll start from their own 32-yard line.
00:46:24A quiet game for Troy Aikman.
00:46:27And a star running back, Emmitt Smith.
00:46:30Neil O'Donnell.
00:46:31Ernie Mills is out for the rest of the game
00:46:33after eight catches with a knee injury.
00:46:36Four wide.
00:46:37O'Donnell.
00:46:38In trouble.
00:46:40And just gets that away incomplete.
00:46:42In and out of the hands of Andre Hastings.
00:46:45Boy, it looked as if Tony Tolbert was going to take the ball right out of O'Donnell's hands from behind.
00:46:51Hastings looking up at the scoreboard because you can see the instant replay.
00:46:54And he knows catch the ball first, then run with the football.
00:46:58You're right, Paul.
00:46:59He knew he was wide open trying to catch it and run.
00:47:01And just a little too quick, took his eyes off the football.
00:47:04Now the pressure on the Dallas defense.
00:47:07O'Donnell with a big second half.
00:47:14Four on one and seven defensive backs.
00:47:16Good time.
00:47:17O'Donnell.
00:47:18Intercepted!
00:47:19And Larry Brown has a shot at a pinch line!
00:47:22Brown knocked out of bounds by John L. Williams.
00:47:25And Brown again, not even near the play.
00:47:28The ball turned right to him.
00:47:30And what happened is they blitzed again.
00:47:32The Dallas Cowboys.
00:47:35The Steelers pick it up and Larry Brown just stands there.
00:47:39Watch this coming at you.
00:47:40You're going to see the blitz.
00:47:42The Cowboys pick it up.
00:47:43Neal O'Donnell throws it quick outside.
00:47:45The receiver does not adjust the route.
00:47:49Larry Brown with two interceptions.
00:47:51He just stood there, both on and phone, right at him.
00:47:54Out of bounds at the six-yard line.
00:47:56John L. Williams saved the touchdown.
00:47:59And now the Steelers...
00:48:01Well, the Steelers are not out.
00:48:03They've got to hold until a field goal right here.
00:48:05That's what Cowboys said.
00:48:06He said there was a field goal, field goal, field goal.
00:48:08His touchdown puts it out of his reach.
00:48:10But there's questions.
00:48:11I don't know who didn't make the adjustment.
00:48:13Was it the receiver or was it Neal O'Donnell on that play?
00:48:16Emmitt Smith lines up the...
00:48:20Smith.
00:48:21Emmitt Smith.
00:48:22Inside the five to the four-yard line.
00:48:25Oh, Steve.
00:48:26The nose-tackle 300 times in Colorado makes this happen.
00:48:30You know, you sit down here,
00:48:31and you know that Emmitt's going to get the ball,
00:48:33and you're sitting back there,
00:48:34but this is the ideal situation for the Dallas Cowboys
00:48:37to throw the football.
00:48:40Pittsburgh Steelers take their second time-out of this half.
00:48:45Well, they stopped the clock at 3.47.
00:48:48That leaves them with only one time-out,
00:48:50plus the two-minute warning.
00:48:53Well, I don't know whose fault it was on that interception.
00:48:55The receiver was supposed to change his route,
00:48:57but the one thing I know is the Steelers pick it up.
00:49:00They pick up the blitz,
00:49:01and that tells me they had the right call on it
00:49:04so the receiver shouldn't adjust.
00:49:05Watch here.
00:49:06You're going to see these two blitzers come outside,
00:49:08plus the back John L. Williams come over here.
00:49:10The receiver never adjusts his route.
00:49:13Watch Larry Brown at the top of your screen.
00:49:15He just watches the quarterback the whole time.
00:49:19And if Neil O'Donnell really did not have
00:49:21to throw the ball that quick,
00:49:22had he waited and throw it downfield,
00:49:24it would have been a touchdown.
00:49:28So Larry Brown, if ever it was that old adage,
00:49:31the right man in the right place,
00:49:33Brown almost camping on us,
00:49:34and he said, you know,
00:49:35I think there'll be an interception thrown about here.
00:49:37And in Larry Brown's behalf,
00:49:39what a year for him.
00:49:40Earlier this season, the very lowest of points,
00:49:42his 10-year-old son Christopher, born prematurely,
00:49:45passed away.
00:49:46He missed a game, came back.
00:49:48So a year with heavy hearts,
00:49:50and here on Super Bowl XXX Day,
00:49:53maybe the highest of emotions for him.
00:49:56Two big interceptions for Brown.
00:50:01Second and goal.
00:50:10Touchdown!
00:50:17Touchdown!
00:50:28Two Larry Brown interceptions have led
00:50:32to two Emmitt Smith touchdown blasts.
00:50:36Emmitt Smith behind that offensive line,
00:50:38that is just awesome.
00:50:39You know, he gets down near that goal line.
00:50:41I mean, he just makes a living getting into the end zone.
00:50:44I mean, just some outstanding blocking by the offense.
00:50:47You look at Kevin Green saying, you know,
00:50:49a couple of interceptions,
00:50:50and we'd have been ahead of this ballgame.
00:50:5314 points out of the 27 at this extra point in time,
00:50:58and it is...
00:51:0127-17.
00:51:03Emmitt Smith held only 49 yards rushing today
00:51:07with two touchdowns.
00:51:09This touchdown, Derrick Kennard and Larry Allen,
00:51:12the center and the right guard,
00:51:14watch them here push the Steelers off the line of scrimmage,
00:51:17and then Daryl Johnson does a good job of kicking it out.
00:51:20Emmitt Smith gets to the half-yard line,
00:51:22pushes his way into the end zone.
00:51:24The story after the two interceptions,
00:51:27it took Dallas only two plays to score each time,
00:51:30as Larry Brown positioned them deep in Pittsburgh territory
00:51:34with his picks.
00:51:35Well, there's a man who might well get
00:51:38a considerable number of votes
00:51:40for the most valuable play in this game,
00:51:42even though there was nothing spectacular
00:51:44about his interceptions,
00:51:45but he played his position right.
00:51:47Oh, yes, there was something spectacular.
00:51:49Dick, 14 points came off of those interceptions.
00:51:51That's right, and when you think back to those interceptions,
00:51:54the Cowboys were gambling, they were blitzing,
00:51:56hoping the Steelers would run something short.
00:51:59That's the reason why he just stood there.
00:52:01They were, like, playing a zone, expecting a quick grab.
00:52:04The Steelers didn't adjust,
00:52:06but Muriel Donald, both times, threw the wrong spot.
00:52:11Well, that's hard for him to say that,
00:52:13a quarterback throwing the wrong spot.
00:52:15He had some hesitation in there.
00:52:17Yeah.
00:52:18The Steelers have lost their deep return man on kickoff,
00:52:21so Fred McAfee fills the role
00:52:24played by Ernie Mills out with a knee injury.
00:52:28There goes the kick.
00:52:30All right, toward the far side lines.
00:52:32McAfee.
00:52:36All right, all right.
00:52:37Hands off to the 24-yard line.
00:52:43Muriel Donald out of the shotgun
00:52:45with Hastings in motion to help out a blitz if there is one,
00:52:48and O'Donnell, too.
00:52:49Hastings.
00:52:50O'Donnell, too.
00:52:51Breaks out of the top corner.
00:52:52Hastings.
00:52:53What an effort by Andre Hastings.
00:52:57Here's the end of the first half at the 34.
00:52:59Clock running, 3.20 left.
00:53:03You've got to stay in the hurry-up offense now.
00:53:06It's not like Buffalo uses it.
00:53:08What they do is they just know how to...
00:53:10But they don't go as fast as the Buffalo Bills have gone in the past.
00:53:17Complete to Yancy Thicke.
00:53:18Look at Corey Holliday.
00:53:20He's in because of the entry to Mills' holiday.
00:53:22Free agent pick a year ago out of the University of North Carolina.
00:53:26Take your time.
00:53:27There's still plenty of time
00:53:28because it doesn't matter how quick you score,
00:53:31it's all going to hinge on getting another one-side kick,
00:53:34so just be patient and make the poses they're given to you.
00:53:37Second and one for O'Donnell.
00:53:39Lots of time.
00:53:40Leon Lutz chases him out, drives O'Donnell into the secondary,
00:53:43and finally O'Donnell throws it away.
00:53:46Stops the clock with 2.34 remaining.
00:53:50Well, I'll tell you what.
00:53:52Old Robert Bailey, number 23, is running at the official.
00:54:02Illegal chuck downfield beyond the five yards against...
00:54:05They haven't said yet, but Bailey is the one that went running.
00:54:08Illegal contact.
00:54:10Number 40 on the defense.
00:54:12Five yards.
00:54:13First down!
00:54:14That's good base, but, you know, Bailey,
00:54:17he was downfield grabbing on John L,
00:54:19and he thought that maybe it was on him.
00:54:21Here's Bill Bates right in the middle.
00:54:23They come across, and, yeah, that's holding.
00:54:26That's holding.
00:54:28Shotgun from the 49.
00:54:312.34.
00:54:33Underneath to Hastings, his 10th catch of the game.
00:54:37Trying to get out of bounds, saves some time
00:54:40by ducking out at the 45-yard line to Dallas.
00:54:42You know, looking back on the two turnovers,
00:54:45both interceptions by O'Donnell,
00:54:47the irony is that Aikman and O'Donnell were one of the best
00:54:50in the league in not throwing interceptions,
00:54:52and O'Donnell is the best career passer
00:54:56in the history of the NFL in least interceptions thrown.
00:55:00And both times, Dickey got caught in that,
00:55:03what we call that no-man's land as a quarterback.
00:55:06He had no way to hold on because he knew
00:55:08the boats were kicked up or not,
00:55:10and both times he made the wrong decision.
00:55:122.28 left.
00:55:14Second down and four.
00:55:17First down incomplete to Hastings.
00:55:20It's just a catch away from tying
00:55:23the Super Bowl record for most catches,
00:55:26which is 11, I believe, Jerry Rice.
00:55:30And Dan Ross, the former Cincinnati Bengals,
00:55:33tied in, had 11 catches.
00:55:36The only problem with that whole play,
00:55:38it wasn't a first down anyway, even if he had caught it.
00:55:40And he's in bounds.
00:55:42Yeah, that's probably the best thing that happened
00:55:44if they dropped the football.
00:55:46Third and four.
00:55:47Ten catches, 98 yards for Hastings.
00:55:50O'Donnell has full-thrown 43 times.
00:55:5327 complete for 234 yards.
00:55:58One touchdown, 206.
00:56:02Steps up, hands it off to Williams.
00:56:05O'Donnell Williams back with a 40-yard line.
00:56:07First down, 217-216.
00:56:10Steelers will try to get off a play
00:56:12in the two-minute warning.
00:56:18Well, I wonder if he sees the game clock.
00:56:20He might be just looking at the 24-second.
00:56:22He gets a playoff.
00:56:24And goes deep downfield for Stewart.
00:56:26Incomplete, and Dion was there.
00:56:29And the two-minute warning.
00:56:32Dallas owner Jerry Jones already conducting
00:56:35his press conference.
00:56:38Never won a basketball from those who
00:56:42apparently hit some money.
00:56:44Jerry never could get enough of it.
00:56:46Just got an autograph.
00:56:47You know, how come when I sign autographs
00:56:49it's like a buck?
00:56:50That's a $100 bill he just signed over there.
00:56:52Do you want us to explain that to you
00:56:53why he won the dollar?
00:56:55Meanwhile, a minute 58 remaining.
00:56:58And Dallas calls time here.
00:57:07Well, Dion Sanders, the prime time.
00:57:10We've had a camera on him throughout.
00:57:12Not a lot of spectacular plays.
00:57:14But he is a prime time guy.
00:57:21And you know, play a little football.
00:57:24First, last two years, Major League Baseball
00:57:27with the Atlanta Braves.
00:57:28Then you go to the 49ers,
00:57:30and then the Cincinnati Reds, Giants.
00:57:33And then to the Dallas Cowboys.
00:57:37Well, that's a quick change on him.
00:57:39Yeah, you know, I like what Dion said.
00:57:41Baseball season's going on.
00:57:43Football go to training camp.
00:57:44The players do.
00:57:45And preseason starts.
00:57:46And he says, you know, my baseball average
00:57:48is continuous.
00:57:49It keeps the drop.
00:57:50Yeah, his batting average.
00:57:51But, well, you know, when we talked to him,
00:57:53if there was a year that he's really thinking
00:57:55about, you know, not playing baseball,
00:57:58I think it's this year.
00:57:59He and Charles Haley are just playing around
00:58:01on the field.
00:58:02But, you know, if they win the Super Bowl here
00:58:05and he loves his football team, is what he said,
00:58:07I think there's a very good possibility
00:58:09that he'll give up baseball.
00:58:10Because he only makes a million a year.
00:58:12And he says that everybody in the league
00:58:14has been to the Bahamas except me.
00:58:15I've never had a vacation.
00:58:17His wife's worried, though,
00:58:18I'd be around the house too much
00:58:19having to play baseball.
00:58:25Underneath him, complete.
00:58:26Ronald Williams.
00:58:28Third and 10.
00:58:34Well, the Cowboys have four sacks
00:58:36and O'Donnell, at least,
00:58:38the feeling one gets watching this game
00:58:40is that he has been a hurried quarterback.
00:58:43And two of those hurries have led to
00:58:45huge interceptions.
00:58:46You know, when you see a quarterback
00:58:49and they're blitzing and you throw the ball,
00:58:51we're not beating him down,
00:58:52but when you see him throw the ball
00:58:54as quick as he does,
00:58:55that shows lack of confidence
00:58:56in your offensive line as far as I'm concerned.
00:58:58This offensive line has done
00:58:59a pretty good job today.
00:59:00They've held up very well,
00:59:01especially against the blitz.
00:59:04He's going to keep this drive going on third now.
00:59:09Almost intercepted as that went through.
00:59:11Andre Hastings hands, incomplete.
00:59:14That would have been a first down.
00:59:15Now it's fourth and 10,
00:59:16and O'Donnell took a hit as he threw.
00:59:19Yeah, Neil O'Donnell does a good job
00:59:21of stepping up, and right here
00:59:22you're going to see the hit.
00:59:23And he gets his right leg caught up under him.
00:59:27Chad Hemmings with a blindside hit.
00:59:31I'm sorry, Dick,
00:59:32but it looked like Chad Hemmings fell
00:59:33on his leg, on his ankle,
00:59:34and that's what hurt him
00:59:35because he was moving forward
00:59:37when he hit the ground.
00:59:38Chad Hemmings, his leg fell on his.
00:59:40Well, here it is, fourth and 10.
00:59:41O'Donnell needs to get 10 or this game is over.
00:59:44Dallas would take it at the 40.
00:59:51And it's in.
00:59:53They got it.
00:59:54Incomplete.
00:59:55O'Donnell wins.
00:59:56Ball will go to the line,
00:59:57and the Conways start the centenary.
01:00:03Yeah!
01:00:17With a 10-point lead, 27 to 17,
01:00:20owner Jerry Jones sees his
01:00:22Cowboy defense hold on down.
01:00:28There's a lot of pressure
01:00:29on the owner this season.
01:00:30That's right.
01:00:31He made a very unpopular choice
01:00:33a year ago, firing Jimmy Johnson.
01:00:37You know, there was another case
01:00:38on that fourth down play.
01:00:40He had two guys wide open on the field
01:00:42to throw the ball to,
01:00:43and could not find either one of them.
01:00:47Troy Aikman said it's not been
01:00:50a totally happy season.
01:00:51There's been a lot of internal strife.
01:00:53You ask him about it,
01:00:54he said it takes four hours to explain.
01:00:56But you've read the things
01:00:58that there's a lot of nipping
01:01:00and nagging behind the scenes
01:01:02in Dallas.
01:01:03You know, I asked him, I said,
01:01:04just tell me your relations
01:01:06with Barry Switzer.
01:01:07I mean, if you can,
01:01:08if you would like to,
01:01:09and he said,
01:01:10strictly professional.
01:01:11They're setting up Barry.
01:01:13Uh-oh, Barry, be alert.
01:01:15You've got to get somebody
01:01:16to hold him so that he's distracted.
01:01:19Oh, he's being held.
01:01:21Oh!
01:01:26Barry Switzer,
01:01:27he's had it in the counter ways.
01:01:30A lot of players,
01:01:31big fans of his.
01:01:32But one thing about Troy,
01:01:34and one that's different
01:01:35from Jimmy Johnson,
01:01:36he gives them freedom,
01:01:38and we can, we sense that in practice.
01:01:40You see how specific they are,
01:01:42and Michael Rivlin and Deion Sanders.
01:01:45You have to think sometimes
01:01:46that Barry Switzer is the perfect coach
01:01:49for those type of players.
01:01:50Yeah, Deion Sanders and Switzer both have new 21-foot boats that go 85 miles an hour.
01:01:55What was it that Barry said?
01:01:57He has never been in any but a 14-foot flat boat with a bucket of crickets.
01:02:01What's he going to do?
01:02:03He said, I'll tell you one thing I'm going to do.
01:02:04If I see him in this boat, I'm getting out of mine.
01:02:07Well, that's a nice show and it was true after the NFC Championship game.
01:02:12The affection of players, players who were not happy when Johnson left,
01:02:16hugging their coach Switzer to say, hey, it's okay now.
01:02:19This is a new era.
01:02:22Well, I guess we're told that Larry Brown is the most valuable player
01:02:25and he's the one that's holding Switzer up, getting ready for the Gatorade.
01:02:28Larry said, let me get out of here, man.
01:02:30Larry's got to do a better job of acting.
01:02:32He's got to turn Barry away from those guys so they can get him.
01:02:36So, Larry Brown, a long shot to even make it in this league.
01:02:42Brown was a 12th round pick, a late 320th player selected
01:02:46in the draft of 1991 out of Texas Christian.
01:02:50Grew up in Los Angeles, admiring Marcus Allen and Lester Hayes.
01:02:54Another kneel down and we're in the final minute.
01:02:59And before the Oakland game this year, Brown losing his 10-month-old son.
01:03:04Well, the Steelers, true to their promise, battled hard.
01:03:08It'll be a game replayed and replayed.
01:03:11Two interceptions, obviously the huge difference.
01:03:16You look at this game, the Steelers had many, many chances
01:03:20to make big plays, to win the football game,
01:03:23but in two crucial moments, that's what it comes down to.
01:03:26Making a play under pressure, both times they failed to do that.
01:03:29You know, I think the game really, not so much the interceptions,
01:03:33yeah, that cost you the ball game, but I'll tell you two situations
01:03:36that I think that turned this game around for Pittsburgh
01:03:38is when they got the ball in the second half of the game
01:03:41and they, on the 40-yard line, when the kick got about,
01:03:45they didn't capitalize there.
01:03:46Then they got the ball back again and did not capitalize again
01:03:49twice in a row.
01:03:50To me, that's where the interception came in.
01:03:52But I'm going to tell you something, they had,
01:03:54I agree with Phil totally, they had so many opportunities
01:03:57to win this football game and never took advantage of them.
01:04:00But the Dallas Cowboys, again, are the Super Bowl champions
01:04:04and let's not overlook the fact they perhaps did not play
01:04:07the game they thought they would, as you see
01:04:09in some of the frustration, Rod Woodson,
01:04:11but they were good enough to win.
01:04:13...and 18 will punt it to Andre Hastings
01:04:16who stands at the 25, only 13 seconds remain.
01:04:29They go after Chet, but can't get there in time
01:04:32and Hastings will let it kick back
01:04:35and touchdown by Dallas with 3 seconds remaining.
01:04:39Time for a final Pittsburgh play.
01:04:42So the NFC will reign supreme again.
01:04:4512 straight victories for the National Conference
01:04:48and the frustration is not just in Pittsburgh,
01:04:51but every team that plays in the American Football Conference.
01:04:54It's painful. I mean, they hurt most of all.
01:04:57At least you've got to say the gap is closing.
01:04:59I mean, we saw today that the Steelers and the NFC
01:05:02are capable of playing with the team from the NFC
01:05:06and like we said, they had many chances to win the game
01:05:09but they didn't come up in the situations when they would tell.
01:05:12You know, and the one thing, the onside kick
01:05:14that we knew was going to be coming sometime during the ballgame
01:05:17and we also thought it might have been on the opening kick
01:05:20of the game, but they didn't want to take a chance.
01:05:22And they take that and then they go down and throw it
01:05:25which puts them in the ballgame.
01:05:26And then another crucial interception
01:05:28that knocks them back out of the ballgame again.
01:05:30You just can't keep overcoming those odds in a big game.
01:05:35And the perhaps least likely of stars,
01:05:38Larry Brown will be the most valuable player.
01:05:40Only the second defensive back to win that honor in a Super Bowl.
01:05:43Miami's Jake Scott.
01:05:47There's the other. Last play.
01:05:49O'Donnell heaves it as far as he can.
01:05:55And the Cowboys come down with the interception.
01:05:58And it is Brock Merriam.
01:06:02Final score, Dallas 27, Pittsburgh 17.
01:06:14By the way, Larry Brown will receive the Pete Rozelle Trophy
01:06:18after the late Commissioner Watson
01:06:20with the game in Southern California
01:06:22said his favorite Super Bowl was the 35-31 Pittsburgh win over Dallas
01:06:27Super Bowl 13 in terms of the excitement.
01:06:29This one, it appeared for a while
01:06:32that it was because of the game
01:06:34and we might be in it for the possibility
01:06:36that Larry Brown made the second of his interceptions.
01:06:39You sat here for two weeks
01:06:41and you kept listening to the things
01:06:43where the Pittsburgh Steelers really didn't have a chance to play in the game.
01:06:45And it just shows, you said something in the beginning
01:06:48about the two weeks that you have to prepare
01:06:51and it benefits the better football team.
01:06:54And in this case, it really did.
01:06:57I mean, Dallas Cowboys, obviously they were the better football team.
01:07:00But again, the Pittsburgh Steelers had enough opportunities
01:07:03and just did not take advantage of it.
01:07:12Vince Lombardi Trophy going to the winning Dallas Cowboys
01:07:15who have now equaled the 5-1 by the San Francisco 49ers
01:07:20and of course those two teams battling throughout the course of the year
01:07:23for that supreme position
01:07:25and regarded as the two best in the NFL.
01:07:28And there were times where Dallas felt
01:07:30they would not have all the advantages
01:07:32of being home, number one state.
01:07:35It appeared the 49ers were in command.
01:07:37Well, think about it. Two weeks ago in the season
01:07:39how it turns around for them.
01:07:41They get home field advantage.
01:07:43They were worried about playing Detroit in the playoffs.
01:07:45That doesn't happen. They get Philadelphia.
01:07:47They match up well against them.
01:07:49Green Bay beats San Francisco.
01:07:51I mean, Dallas, they were scared to play the Kansas City Chiefs
01:07:54They matched up well. The Steelers,
01:07:56a team they thought they matched up well against, comes in.
01:07:58Charles Haley, by the way.
01:08:00Five Super Bowl rings.
01:08:02Haley becomes the first to have one
01:08:04for all three fingers and a thumb.
01:08:06His father seeing his first
01:08:08Super Bowl game prayed the flies
01:08:10though finally coaxed to come out here
01:08:12to Phoenix and see his son
01:08:14win number five.
01:08:20So Deion Sanders wins
01:08:23back-to-back Super Bowl rings
01:08:25with two different teams.
01:08:2727-17
01:08:29Dallas
01:08:31the champions again.
