00:00Is that a Buick or an old Buick?
00:02Looks like it, doesn't it?
00:04Looks like an old Buick.
00:06It might be an old one, Bill.
00:08Looks like a Buick. It really does.
00:18All right, Irv, let's take a look at some highlights now and you get us started.
00:22Okay, I'll start. It's been a defensive day around the National Football League.
00:25And the Atlanta Falcons and Minnesota Vikings late in the fourth quarter
00:29in a head-to-head battle where the score is 14-7, Minnesota.
00:32But this is early action in the first quarter when Fran Tarkin goes to the air
00:36and Ronan Lawrence picks the ball up.
00:38We all know, Brent, that defensive backs are the best athletes in national football.
00:42He brings the ball back to the 49-yard line,
00:44setting up a scoring opportunity for Scott Hunter and his offensive teammates.
00:47And Greg McCreary, a backup tight end substituting for Jim Mitchell,
00:51takes the pass in.
00:53Atlanta led 7-0, but Fran Tarkin comes right back
00:56for the next offensive series by the Vikings.
00:58Hits Sammy White, 55-yard touchdown pass.
01:00It's all tied, 7-7.
01:02In the third quarter, the biggest play of the game,
01:04Chuck Foreman going 51 yards all the way down to the Atlanta one-yard line.
01:09But don't go away, folks.
01:10He takes the Vikings three plays before they can finally get it in.
01:13And from the six-yard line, third and goal,
01:15Fran Tarkin goes to Bob Tucker,
01:17who's recently acquired from the New York Giants.
01:19And he brings it in and Minnesota takes a 14-7 lead
01:22and it's late in the fourth quarter, and his score still holds at that point.
01:25And Irv Bartkowski now is in quarterback in the Atlanta Falcons in that game,
01:29trying to pull it out.
01:30Philadelphia and Washington, the story there, of course,
01:32is the fact that Joe Theismann started at quarterback.
01:35And early, the Eagles gave him an opportunity to show what he could do
01:39as Smith cuffed it up on the end around at a Redskins jump on it.
01:43Watch now, Theismann wants his tight end, Gene Fugate.
01:46It's the combination that will burn the Eagles a couple of times.
01:49From the left side, he sends him.
01:52Simple post-pattern six points.
01:55A little bit later, Theismann back with his offense.
01:58This time, he'll go to an outside man, Danny Buggs,
02:03down at the 15-yard line.
02:05And again, it will be Fugate.
02:07This time, from the right side, he runs.
02:09Same pattern, different side of the field.
02:12Eagles come back.
02:13Betterson runs it in for the touchdown.
02:17But the Redskins are still in command in that football game.
02:21The Eagles scored again late in that game.
02:23Britain, the score is 23-17.
02:25Harold Carmichael pulled in a Ron Jaworski touchdown pass.
02:28But with Green Bay and Chicago in the third quarter,
02:30Chicago has a 16-0 commanding lead.
02:32And Walter Payton has a story.
02:34When you have the best running back in football, what do you do?
02:36Give him the ball.
02:37He takes the ball down to the 5-yard line,
02:39setting up a touchdown run by Johnny Musso.
02:41And Chicago took a 6-0 lead, missed the extra point.
02:44Walter Payton, number 34, goes in again, this time from the 6, 13-0.
02:48And Chicago right now has a 16-0 lead.
02:54All right, Irv.
02:55We've got the Dallas Cowboys and the Detroit Lions.
02:57The Cowboys, the only unbeaten team in the NFC.
03:01And unless Detroit can get its act together in the second half,
03:04they will stay that way halfway through the season.
03:06Herrera's field goal from the 45-yard line made it 6-0 in favor of the Cowboys.
03:11Young Mark Washington steps in to intercept this pass by Landry.
03:15And watch the return they get.
03:17They yell, fire on that defensive unit, Irv.
03:19Cross, you defensive backs, you know how to do it.
03:21Now Billy Joe Dupree catches the 15-yard touchdown pass from Stabak,
03:26gets into the end zone, and it became 13-0.
03:29Detroit made only two first downs in the first half.
03:33And I think that's more a tribute to that Cowboy defensive unit
03:36because Landry can get you some first downs.
03:38There's Hagman with an interception.
03:40And from there it was Scott Laidlaw as the Cowboys marched it in.
03:44And, of course, at the half, they lead 23-0 as they got down
03:48to kick still another field goal.
03:50Look at the blocking wall that forms there for the Dallas Cowboys.
03:53They know how to do it, and they've got great athletes in that franchise.
03:56Now the Los Angeles Rams and the New Orleans Saints,
03:59and it has been a wild, wild game down in the Superdome.
04:03Rams always have trouble down there.
04:05Hayden yanks back.
04:06He wants Harold Jackson.
04:07And watch him as he moves to the left, that agility.
04:11After the extra point, it was 7-0.
04:13Strawn has replaced Muncie, who is in Stram's doghouse.
04:16And on a key fourth down, he got it down to the Ram three-yard line
04:19and gave up his jersey in the process.
04:21Galbraith took it from there, went for the touchdown,
04:24and New Orleans led it by 3-10-7.
04:26Now for the right side.
04:28Watch Chuck Criss come on the blitz.
04:30And that causes L.A. to kick a field goal that tied it.
04:33Now the Saints punting.
04:35And Waddy, who has got blazing speed, unfortunately, is going to cough it up.
04:41I say unfortunately for the Rams and their fans.
04:44Surrounded, and the Saints have got a chance.
04:47They set up a field goal.
04:48The big play this year is the fake.
04:50Defensive end Grooms goes out.
04:52He's an eligible receiver.
04:53He lined up as a tight end.
04:5417-10.
04:56Rams come back.
04:57Was this a touchdown or wasn't it?
04:59Hayden for the corner.
05:00Jackson tightrope walking.
05:01Both feet inbounds.
05:02Perfect call.
05:04Look at how he came right down for that touchdown.
05:06All right, now let's go back to Lindsey Nelson and Paul Horning.
05:09Lindsey.
