Transcript
00:00A lot going on and right now St. Louis and Denver are scoreless in the second
00:08quarter. Houston has scored against the New York Jets. They lead 7-0. Phyllis, get
00:12us up to date with all the baseball races still left and also that America's
00:15Cup race. Great. Reggie Jackson and Dave Kingman homered for the New York Yankees
00:20today as they defeated Detroit 6-5. And Brent, of course, will have those
00:24highlights of that game in just a moment. Baltimore held a day for Brooks
00:28Robinson, but they trailed the Boston Red Sox in the sixth inning 6-4. A
00:32Baltimore defeat would place him three and a half games behind the Yankees. In
00:37the other races, the Phillies lost to St. Louis, their magic number staying at 5
00:42in the National League East. The Dodgers, just starting, have a magic number of 2
00:46over the Reds in the National League West. And Kansas City, who just won today,
00:51knocked their magic number to 4 in the American League West. Now in Davis
00:55Cup play today, both Australia and Italy advanced to the finals. And, of
01:00course, Ted Turner's yacht, Courageous, made it four straight to sweep the
01:03America's Cup. Britt, what about those Yankee highlights? All right, and Phyllis,
01:06also an update right now. Boston leading Baltimore 6-4 in the ninth. Now the
01:10highlights that Phyllis told you about. What a pickup Dave Kingman has turned
01:14out to be for the New York Yankees. In Tiger Stadium, where hitters flurry. She
01:19hit another one today. Two in two days for New York as they roll up a six-run
01:24lead. And I want to show you a candidate for most valuable player in the American
01:28League. Maybe all you've heard about Reggie Jackson is controversy. Well, has
01:32he been thumping the last week? Five home runs in a week, another one today.
01:36Yankees hold off the Tigers 6-5 and close in now on another championship in
01:41the American League East. And did we have an upset? The New York Giants and the
01:45Washington Redskins. Right away, the Giants ambush the Redskins' Billy Kilmer.
01:50Watch now as Kilmer attempts to throw a simple pass out on the flat.
01:54George Martin, defensive lineman, picks it off. Twenty-nine yards for the
01:57touchdown. Unfortunately, Martin later was injured. He'll be sidelined four
02:01weeks. Kilmer now trying desperately to bring the Redskins back into it. And he
02:06is helped here by an interference call. It is obvious on Fugitive he had no
02:10chance to go for the ball. That set up this touchdown play. Kilmer, second in
02:14goal. He shakes Riggins, number 44, loose. And he's got him as the Skins regain
02:19the lead. But it is Goldstein, the Giants' rookie quarterback. He missed all
02:23of last year because of an injury who hit Ed Marshall down at the seven-yard
02:27line on a deflection by Houston. Then the touchdown pass that tied it at 17.
02:33Goldstein to Schur. And it looked like they were headed for overtime. But on a
02:37simple quick trap, the Redskins fumbled. And it was recovered by the Giants. Then
02:43with just five seconds left, it was Dinello kicking the field goal 20 yards.
02:49And the Giants had upset the Washington Redskins by a score of 20 to 17. That
02:54wasn't the only upsetter, of course. Well, there were other upsets, Brent. We'll talk
02:58about it when we get to that Atlanta-L.A. game. But right now, the Minnesota Vikings
03:02and Dallas Cowboys, of course, are tied at half with the Dallas
03:07trailing the Minnesota seven and three. But this is the highlight, Packers, from
03:11Atlanta and L.A. Joe Namath has completed a pass there to Harold Jackson. The
03:15second pass here, third pass actually to the game, was a touchdown this time to
03:18Jackson, a 29-yard score. Haskell Stambach scores a one-yard line from Atlanta to
03:23not the game. The Rams, by the way, missed an extra point in this game. The final
03:26score was 17 to 6. And Haskell Stambach, who had a great preseason, carries 35
03:30yards here, down to the L.A. 36-yard line, which sets up another sequence of plays,
03:35allowing Scott Hunter to hit Wallace Francis along the sideline, inside the
03:3912-yard line. Hunter goes this time on a keeper, scores another
03:43touchdown, get a field goal for Atlanta. The final score, 17-6. And we'll get the
03:46Minnesota Dallas later, okay? One of your favorite running backs, of course, is Walter
03:51Payton. He rushed for 161 yards. We're going to show you a highlight package on
03:55Walter, and we'll be right back as the NFL Today continues on CBS, right after
04:00these messages from your local stations. When pirates invade his territory, young
04:05Donald Boone springs into action. Watch this great American hero tomorrow night
04:09on CBS.
04:13It was Chicago 30, Detroit 28, and what an afternoon for Walter Payton. 131 yards in
04:23the first half of this game, wound up with 160 yards. Here is his best run, 75
04:30yards. Now watch for number 89, James Scott, from the left side of your screen.
04:34He's going to throw a sensational block, no clip on the play, and Payton got down
04:39inside the 10-yard line before he was run out of bounds. Then he came back, was
04:44still, another long run. Look at that little delay that they run with Payton.
04:48Sprinting out to the left, 24 yards. Again, it is Scott out in front, throwing the
04:53key block. One of two touchdowns by number 34. On a first and goal behind
04:57Revy Sori, he plows to the corner. Now let's take a slow-motion look at what
05:03the Bears were doing. They held Payton up for a count, got great blocking from 35
05:07Roland Harper. He whips a linebacker. Payton then slips through the daylight,
05:11counted on James Scott downfield. Here he is going on his own, and finally run out
05:17of bounds. Now his second and final touchdown. It's a three-yard run, and
05:23watch his nose for the end zone. Right there, Walter Payton, 161 yards, 23
05:28carries, and two touchdowns, and Chicago a winner. Irv, now it's time for the Dallas
05:32Cowboys. Okay, Dallas and Minnesota, of course, 7-3 at halftime, with Minnesota
05:36leading the game at their home ballpark in Bloomington, Minnesota, and
05:40everybody expected this to be a tough ballgame, and it is, with Fran Tarkin at
05:43this time hands off to Sammy White, who breaks off his left guard and moves up
05:47field for a 25-yard gain around the Dallas 25-yard line. Tarkin at this time
05:52elects to go through the air and picks out his favorite receiver, Chuck
05:55Foreman, who latches on to it. 10 yards, touchdown Minnesota, the only touchdown
05:59of the first half. The Cowboys get on the board with a 33-yard field goal from
06:03Efren Herrera, 7-3 at halftime. It was New Orleans and the Green Bay Packers
06:09in the Superdome, the site of the Super Bowl game next January on CBS, and
06:14probably the single most exciting play of the day. It was a punt return,
06:18Harrell of the Packers waiting to haul it back. 80 yards coming up right here.
06:23Now watch the block that Wagner is going to throw, number 21, after he turns the
06:28corner. It's the final block for Willard Harrell, and it'll lead him into the end
06:31zone right there. The Packers opened up a 14-point lead, largely because Lynn
06:37Dickey was hitting Ken Payne. Here he is with protection, stepping up and going
06:43deep down the left sideline. He wanted Payne again on the touchdown play that
06:48put the Packers ahead 21-0 after the extra point, and he got it. But the Saints
06:53rallied valiantly in the second half. Archie Manning, number eight, back after
06:57that arm operation of a year ago. For Henry Childs, coming out of the right
07:01side, he went all the way for the touchdown, made it 24-20. But then the
07:06Packers were able to hold on, and Bart Starr had beaten Hank Scramm, and again
07:10that final score is 24-0. And of course, just a handful of games now still
07:14working. St. Louis and Denver, they are scoreless in the second quarter. Of
07:18course, the game you're watching, 7-3 Minnesota at the half, Baltimore over
07:22Seattle 14-7 at the half, Houston leading the Jets 7-0. And right now, let's go
07:26back to Bloomington, Minnesota, Pat Summerall and Tom Brookshire. Pat?
