00:02:08That's a really tough deal to criticize a lineman for he's he's trying to hustle out there and protect his quarterback
00:02:14He doesn't know if he's going to scramble and run. He doesn't know if he's going to throw
00:02:18It looked like McKenzie was no more than a yard downfield and he can't watch him
00:02:22He takes a look at it. It looks like he's going to run and then he has to look upfield
00:02:25That just falls into the category of just really a bad bad break

00:05:49It has now come in 30 years rent free for the Browns in Baltimore a new 70,000 seat stadium
00:05:56Tickets parking and concession revenue now Peter King of Sports Illustrated is in that city and he tells us something else is behind the move
00:06:05Art Modell told me late today. The Browns are 50 million dollars in debt
00:06:0921 million of that coming in the last two years that helped drive him to this stunning move
00:06:14Why are Modell and seven of his owner peers suddenly talking about moving to greener stadiums?
00:06:19Salary cap was supposed to bring equal spending to the NFL
00:06:22But in
00:06:231994 the highest-grossing team Dallas made 48 million more than the lowest Cincinnati and in
00:06:301995 the Cowboys plowed much of that cash into huge signing bonuses for players like Deion Sanders
00:06:36The low revenue teams can't play in Dallas's Bonus League. That's what's driving teams to these huge stadium deals Brent
00:06:43Alright Peter joining us live now from Dallas is NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue Paul. First of all, thank you for being with us tonight
00:06:50Let me start with the numbers that Peter King used 50 million dollars in debt for the Cleveland Browns if that's true
00:06:56How can owners like Modell and some of the others survive in the cities that they're now in Commissioner?
00:07:03Well, I don't know about the numbers
00:07:04but I think the key to survival in this environment is a first-class facility and rock-solid support locally and
00:07:12Having met with Mayor White last night of Cleveland. I know that's what he's trying to accomplish in Cleveland
00:07:17But it's difficult and and that's that's the problem that we face today in professional sports, particularly the NFL
00:07:25Commissioner there are so many loyal fans in Cleveland
00:07:28Would you tell them tonight that it's all over that the Browns for certain are headed for Baltimore or should they still hold out?
00:07:35Hope I
00:07:37Can't say that it's all over. I think that in a sense from the league's perspective. It's just beginning. We have our procedures
00:07:43We have our policies
00:07:45We don't want to see any team leave when there is support from rabid fans such as there is in Cleveland
00:07:52Pete Roselle didn't want to see the Colts leave when there was support from those rabid fans in Baltimore in 1984
00:07:58So in a sense the quandary here is that we have two of those
00:08:03Franchises that have been marked through history two of those cities Baltimore and Cleveland where the fans have been so rabid
00:08:09They've been the envy of the whole sports world
00:08:11That's our quandary and that's what we're gonna have to work through in the next 30 to 60 days before we reach a decision
00:08:17Commissioner this has been the most solid of leagues outstanding television contract
00:08:21But we look around the landscape the Rams have moved to st. Louis. The Raiders have gone back to Oakland
00:08:26So Los Angeles is without a team now
00:08:28The Browns are announcing the Houston Oilers apparently are I in Nashville. Maybe Cincinnati will I another city?
00:08:35It seems like we are into an era of franchise free agency your comment on that
00:08:41Well, I think we're into an era. That's more than franchise free agency
00:08:45I think the same problems that are underlying this type of a team move are the same problems that caused the
00:08:53Cancellation of the baseball season. They're the same problems that the NHL and the NBA were dealing with in their work stoppage
00:09:00Situations the costs are
00:09:02Escalating the player costs are escalating the costs of facilities are escalating
00:09:07there is a gap as Peter King suggested between the haves and the have-nots which is being accelerated by
00:09:13People pulling out of NFL properties are trying to do so and other things that split up our revenue share arrangements
00:09:20Those are the problems we face in the NFL and we have to deal with them
00:09:23Commissioner that leads me right into the next question
00:09:26This is not the best of days for you at the office because the Dallas Cowboys filed that
00:09:31750 million dollar antitrust lawsuit
00:09:34Against the NFL today claiming restraint of trade now could this in any way be tied to Modell's announced move?
00:09:41He feels the Jones and the Cowboys will win this and they're gonna need more revenue to compete for players like Deion Sanders in the
00:09:48future
00:09:49Well, I think that the attack on NFL properties the attack on revenue sharing
00:09:54Isn't it is gonna make it difficult for people to compete?
00:09:57I think the lawsuit is a sad comment on on where Jerry Jones is he's isolated from the other owners
00:10:05There have been owners meeting with him in the last several weeks trying to convince him not to take this step
00:10:10He's been unable to convince them that his vision of the future for NFL properties makes sense
00:10:15So I guess he felt he had to take this step
00:10:18Commissioner one final question just to clarify there will be no league vote taken tomorrow on the Browns announced move
00:10:25That is in January. Is that correct?
00:10:28We're currently looking at a vote in January if we can move it up a little bit
00:10:31We'll do that
00:10:32But I've told all the parties in Ohio and I told governor
00:10:37Clendenning of Maryland today that we were probably looking at a vote in January so that our processes could be fair

00:11:20You know, I I'm not sitting up here saying hey, it's about the money. I've done it, but there's nothing like winning championship
00:11:27There's nothing like the feeling even though even if you do it one time in your life
00:11:31And you experience that once just that moment one time when you walk in the locker room after a Super Bowl
00:11:38And you see 50 guys and you look around and you look in everybody eyes job done job well done goal accomplished
00:11:45That's quite a feeling man. That is quite a feeling and for all the people that hadn't experienced

00:11:52Boy, they don't know what they miss at this moment in time November of 1995
00:11:57How do you feel you stack up with Jerry Rice in terms of talent? I think what Jerry I think Jerry does
00:12:05Exactly what the team need him to do and I think you do it as good as anybody can do it
00:12:09But I also think that I do exactly what this football team need me to there's some things
00:12:13I think Jerry does real great
00:12:15I haven't seen a receiver quite a deep ball like Jerry Rice quite a deep ball and I've seen a lot of fast guys
00:12:21They're supposed to be much faster than Jerry. You never see him get overthrown. He goes at a deep ball betting anybody
00:12:27There's some things I think I do better than Jerry. I think I'm a better
00:12:30Off the line player when a guy presses me bump around on the line
00:12:33I like to think that I'm a better player than I think that's the way when I look at I say well
00:12:37Hey, there's some things that God blessed him with that. He does better
00:12:40But there are some things that God blessed me with that I do better
00:12:43How important is it for you to spend your whole career with the Dallas Cowboys? I would hate quite honestly
00:12:50I would hate to wake up one day go to a stadium and put on another uniform
