00:00:00It is overcast on the first Sunday in October, and the usual sellout crowd at RFK Stadium
00:00:06for the continuation of one of the great rivalries in the National Football League, the Dallas
00:00:10Cowboys against the Washington Redskins.
00:00:14Hello everybody, Dick Stockton and Matt Millen, and Matt Laley, it hasn't been much of a rivalry
00:00:17as the Cowboys have demolished the Skins the last three games, and the number one order
00:00:21of business for the Redskins, how to stop that monumental Dallas attack.
00:00:25Well, if they can figure that one, Dick, I think they should bottle it and sell it to
00:00:28the rest of the National Football League.
00:00:31I think today what we're going to see out of the Redskins are some gambles.
00:00:33I think they're going to have to play some eight-man front, they're going to have to
00:00:36roll up to Irvin, they still have to take care of Novacek, but they still have to line
00:00:40up and go against that big offensive line that Terry Bradshaw talked about, so I think
00:00:43it's going to be a rough one.
00:00:45And Kevin Williams will be in that lineup, as will Emmitt Smith after that elbow injury
00:00:48last week.
00:00:49Now on the other side, Norm Turner has to find a way of moving the ball against Dallas.
00:00:53I think he will.
00:00:54I think this offense, the Washington Redskins offense, I think is one of the top five offenses
00:00:58in the league.
00:00:59I think Norm Turner's on a roll, in fact, I think they're going to stretch this defense
00:01:02and look early for them to throw the ball down to kind of disrupt the confidence of
00:01:07the Dallas secondary.
00:01:08All right, so Gus Farad will have that job as the Dallas Cowboys will come out in their
00:01:14double star uniforms for the first time in blue, and we'll return to RFK Stadium for
00:01:19the opening kickoff right after these messages from your local Fox station.
00:01:27And right now, for a further report on the Emmitt Smith situation, let's go down to the
00:01:31third member of our team, Pam Oliver.
00:01:33Well, Dick, Emmitt Smith isn't feeling so hot, but the Cowboys don't seem to think it's
00:01:38anything serious.
00:01:39I spoke with him a little while ago, he says he's feeling kind of so-so.
00:01:43It's not so much of a stomach problem as it is a sinus infection and a little bit of a
00:01:49sore throat.
00:01:50But guys, as you know, from when we talked with him last night, he is on a mission and
00:01:53not going to let anything slow him down.
00:01:55All right, Pam, thank you very much.
00:01:57Chris Bonio kicking off as the Redskins will get their hands on the ball first.
00:02:01And Brian Mitchell, one of the top kick returners in the National Football League, is swarmed
00:02:08about by Cowboy defenders at the 25-yard line.
00:02:13Gus Farad, who is making his fourth consecutive start after relieving Heath Shuler in game
00:02:18one of the season.
00:02:21On the offensive line, Trey Johnson, after warming up, will start at right guard.
00:02:26That's good news for the Redskins' offensive line.
00:02:29And as Matt Millen mentioned, they have got weapons in Terry Allen, Michael Westbrook,
00:02:33as well as Farad.
00:02:34Scott Galbraith, the former Cowboy, is at tight end.
00:02:35Play action on the first play.
00:02:36Michael Westbrook downfield against Clayton Holmes.
00:02:37And the pass just beyond him, incomplete, as Farad going deep on the first play of
00:02:52the game.
00:02:53You know, Dick, we just talked about that right in the open.
00:02:56This is something I expected early in the game, was for Norb Turner to start getting
00:03:01into the cornerback's head right away.
00:03:03We're going to push you deep.
00:03:04We're going to come at you all game long.
00:03:06Here you just see Westbrook just running right by Clayton Holmes.
00:03:09And this is just six inches away from being a monster big play.
00:03:12Yeah, I think what this does, though, is it sets the tone.
00:03:15They're going to be aggressive offensively.
00:03:17Six-three, Westbrook against the 5'10", Holmes.
00:03:21Second down and ten.
00:03:24Another pass for Farad.
00:03:26And he can't get away.
00:03:28Tolbert.
00:03:29And he had some company.
00:03:31Russell Maryland in as well.
00:03:34And the first sack of the game, the Dallas defensive line, with Haley and Tolbert.
00:03:39The ends, and Leon Led and Russell Maryland, the tackles, we've already seen what they
00:03:43can do.
00:03:44Godfrey Miles, Robert Jones, who's been playing exceptional ball, and Dixon Edwards are the
00:03:48linebackers.
00:03:50Larry Brown, Brock Marion, Darren Woodson, and Clayton Holmes, who is keeping the cornerback
00:03:57position warm until Deion Sanders is ready to go.
00:04:01Third and 19.
00:04:06Leslie Shepard is the third wide receiver, and the pass is overthrown, intended for Henry
00:04:11Ellard.
00:04:12And the Redskins go three and out.
00:04:17Well, the first thing they did is they went up, and then they had the time to throw the
00:04:21first pass.
00:04:22The second pass, they didn't.
00:04:24And that's what's going to be on their mind all day long.
00:04:28Because you can call a game as aggressive as you want to, but if you're not going to
00:04:31get any kind of protection, you're in for a long one.
00:04:34Matt Turk will be kicking from inside his five.
00:04:37Kevin Williams on his 40, and the Cowboys look for good field position.
00:04:49And a fair catch called for by Williams at the 45-yard line.
00:04:54So Troy Aikman will have a short field as he brings out the Cowboys offense following
00:04:59that 39-yard kick.
00:05:01Aikman has thrown a touchdown pass in every game so far this season.
00:05:06There's that great offensive line you heard from them in the pregame show.
00:05:10And Eric Williams is starting at right tackle, had the strained calf.
00:05:15Emmitt Smith is not wearing the protective sleeve that he thought he might need for his
00:05:19left elbow, and the weapons with Michael Irvin and Jane Overtake.
00:05:22First down on the 45, a bounce.
00:05:29And it's Emmitt Smith with the first carry, and he picks up about four.
00:05:36Rod Stevens, the middle linebacker, making the stop.
00:05:41The big matchup, the offensive line of the Cowboys against this defensive line.
00:05:45William Gaines is starting in place of Tim Johnson, who's out with a sprained neck.
00:05:51Marcus Patton, Rod Stevens, and Ken Harvey.
00:05:53Harvey picked up his first sack of the year last week.
00:05:56Green, Richard, Keith Taylor, who's in there for James Washington,
00:05:59the former Cowboy who's left, and Tom Carter.
00:06:03Second and six.
00:06:06Emmitt Smith will give the Cowboys a first down inside the 45 of Washington
00:06:11with Woods and Richard that time, and a gain of seven.
00:06:14Well, you know how every now and then you get a player in this league
00:06:17who will just dominate you?
00:06:19I think the Dallas Cowboys have five of them, and they're all up front,
00:06:21that entire offensive line.
00:06:23This group has played to the great mean streak,
00:06:26and I think it starts with Eric Williams.
00:06:28And what he's instilled in them is to go out and just steal your heart,
00:06:31and they'll just pound you into the ground.
00:06:33And that's what they expect to do today.
00:06:35Number one rushing unit in the NFL.
00:06:39Eight men to throw for the first time,
00:06:41and he's got Michael Irvin who breaks a couple of tackles
00:06:45and is finally stopped at the 20-yard line by Rod Stevens.
00:06:49A gain of 24 yards, and the Cowboys are in business.
00:06:52They started on their own 45.
00:06:54Now, this is the dilemma that every team that's going to play the Cowboys
00:06:57are going to face this year.
00:06:59You have to respect that offensive line's ability to run,
00:07:01so you start walking people up in safeties and playing eight-man fronts,
00:07:04and you start messing with your coverage.
00:07:06And when you do that, you have the Michael Irvin and Novacek
00:07:09and Troy Aikman to throw the ball, and that's the dilemma.
00:07:12You're caught in between and it becomes a guessing game.
00:07:15Down the 21-yard line.
00:07:18And this time, Emmitt Smith is thrown back,
00:07:21led by William Gaines, making his first start,
00:07:24signed as a free agent from the Miami Dolphins
00:07:27a week before the season began.
00:07:29And that's where one of the gambles paid.
00:07:31So what Ron Lynn, the defensive coordinator for the Redskins, has done
00:07:35is he's going to start and he's going to try run blitzing.
00:07:38And when they do that, they'll put everybody in a gap
00:07:41and they seal everything off so Emmitt has no place to go.
00:07:44The problem with that is if he gets caught, it's six quick.
00:07:48There's Ron Lynn. He's got his hands full today.
00:07:51Second and ten.
00:07:56Aikman swings it out to Emmitt Smith.
00:08:01And Smith gets it down to the 15-yard line
00:08:04and a gain of seven yards.
00:08:06Now this is one of those things that, you know,
00:08:09Troy Aikman could get his favorite book, go back there today
00:08:12and read it and still have time to throw the ball.
00:08:14And this is an indicator of the rest of the game
00:08:16that it's going to be a long one.
00:08:18And so what they'll do, Ernie Zampezi, the offensive coordinator for the Cowboys,
00:08:21is he's just going to be patient.
00:08:23And he's just going to let those big bodies of the offensive line
00:08:26wear you down, give the quarterback time,
00:08:29and then pretty soon it all comes together.
00:08:31This really is a big third down play for the Redskins defense.
00:08:37Even this early in the game.
00:08:39And the pass is knocked down.
00:08:41It was intended for Darrell Johnston out of the backfield
00:08:44and Keith Taylor.
00:08:46And pressure on Aikman, as you saw,
00:08:48and that'll bring up fourth down and a field goal attempt.
00:08:51Hey, we got a hobbler.
00:08:53Aikman just got hit by Ken Harvey
00:08:56and he came up hobbling.
00:08:59And if you ever want to slow down the Dallas Cowboys passing game,
00:09:02this is the way you do it.
00:09:04You take their quarterback out of it.
00:09:06See, Emmitt tried to cut him. Actually, nobody even hit him.
00:09:09Heck, nobody hit him. That's even a worse sign.
00:09:12These things happen when nobody's around. That's a bad indicator.
00:09:15Heck, look at that. No one near him.
00:09:19That's not good.
00:09:21He was holding his knee as he was helped off the field.
00:09:24And you would figure that somebody had put pressure,
00:09:27but no one did, and Aikman is being helped off the field.
00:09:30You can't blame it on the turf.
00:09:33All natural grass. He just went back and planted and threw
00:09:36and something must have popped on him.
00:09:38Wade Wilson, the veteran, warming up for the Cowboys.
00:09:42You're right, Matt. You can't blame it on the turf.
00:09:47So many injuries have been blamed on it.
00:09:49Now Bonio attempting a 32-yard field goal with Jay Novacek holding.
00:10:01Bonio's kick is good and the Cowboys have to settle for a field goal,
00:10:05but more urgency to the Dallas Cowboys is the condition of their quarterback, Troy Aikman.
00:10:11Troy Aikman.
00:10:15The injury to Troy Aikman is a strained calf,
00:10:18and they're going to try to massage it and rub it and see if it improves.
00:10:22It looked like more than a strain. It looked like something popped on him.
00:10:26He jumped right up on him.
00:10:29Kickoff by Bonio and Ryan Mitchell with a fingertip pass on the 5-yard line.
00:10:37He could loom large as a big weapon for the Redskins today.
00:10:40Darren Woodson making the tackle, and let's see how Aikman went down again.
00:10:44Well, you can see he's going to plant with that right foot,
00:10:46and then just as he starts to throw, it looks like something just snapped right there.
00:10:49Boom. See that? And he pulled right up off it.
00:10:51Had to be painful. I think it affected the throw because the throw was a little bit behind.
00:10:56You normally don't act like that when you strain something.
00:11:02And it appears they're going to take him into the dressing room.
00:11:06Michael Irvin with a bit of encouragement for Troy Aikman.
00:11:09Wade Wilson warming up, as we said.
00:11:12First down on the 26 for the Redskins, who trail 3-0.
00:11:16Here's Terry Allen with his first carry, and it doesn't get much.
00:11:20Allen, the leading ball carrier for the Redskins and 5th in the league.
00:11:24Believe it or not, this is the first time that he has faced the Dallas Cowboys in his career.
00:11:29You watch right here on Charles Haley.
00:11:31He's going to have a tight end and attack.
00:11:3388 Jenkins, and then Joe Patton.
00:11:35And what they're trying to do is they're trying to get inside of Haley's head right now.
00:11:39See, it's one thing to block him. It's another thing to push him back six yards.
00:11:43They know Charles Haley is the key to that defense, so they want to get to him early.
00:11:53Second and nine, short flop, and the pass to Allen into the backfield.
00:11:57And he's got a first down in the Cowboy territory.
00:12:00Amazing, in six years, the first time that Allen has faced Dallas.
00:12:04And a gain of 24, Darren Woodson brings him down.
00:12:07The first thing you have to do is priorities.
00:12:09Now, priority is Charles Haley, so you have to get him blocked.
00:12:12Now, if you're going to have problems with this, you have to throw quick, which is what they do.
00:12:16But notice, they kept the two guys on him.
00:12:18And then all they do is they just take that back, and they just jump it back underneath your cover.
00:12:22And when you've got a guy like Terry Allen who's running as well as he is, it's a big threat.
00:12:27On the 49 of Dallas.
00:12:31And off to Allen, and he gets a couple of yards.
00:12:35Can you double-team Haley all day if you're the Redskins' offensive line?
00:12:39You absolutely have to account for him.
00:12:41You have to slide to him, you have to keep a back end, you keep a tight end there.
00:12:45They have a second-year guy there in Joe Patton who can't hang with Haley.
00:12:48Actually, a big test for Patton.
00:12:50But what Charles Haley does is he will make the offense come to him.
00:12:55And by doing that, it defines the rest of the defense for where you're at.
00:13:01Second down and eight.
00:13:10Giving ground, and his screen pass was intended for Mark Logan, who never got out of the backfield.
00:13:16But guess what? We had number 94.
00:13:18And see, now this is a designed play to slow him down.
00:13:21He's going to run a stunt back inside.
00:13:23To slow him down, and then you just kind of let him go.
00:13:26But I mean, he just takes Joe Patton and just throws him.
00:13:29And what he's doing is not using power, he's using leverage.
00:13:33And he feels a guy.
00:13:34I think Charles Haley is the best defensive end in football.
00:13:37That's saying a lot when you got Reggie Wyden and Bruce Smith and those kind of guys.
00:13:41I think he's right there.
00:13:42Five of the seven plays have been through the air.
00:13:45Third down and eight for the Redskins.
00:13:50Here is Mitchell.
00:13:52Brian Mitchell dies for the first down.
00:13:59And Terry Allen was with him, just in case Mitchell was ready to pitch it out.
00:14:04A gain of 12 yards, and the Redskins are inside the 40.
00:14:07You know what the Redskins finally have back from what they have been missing since Joe gives us here?
00:14:12They got some great players.
00:14:14And they have some guys who can make things happen.
00:14:17Brian Mitchell might be the most underrated superstar in the National Football League.
00:14:22This guy can do everything and do everything well.
00:14:25And I think that is a major, major thing with this team.

00:15:17And then you figured that this offense was going to be able to move the ball.

00:17:09He has good escapability.
00:17:10He has a big, strong arm.
00:17:12And I think what he's struggling with right now is,
00:17:15should I take complete control of this offense or not?
00:17:18He doesn't quite know.
00:17:19It's like he has one foot on a banana peel
00:17:21and the other one on Heath Shuler.
00:17:23Gus, is this my team or is it going to be Heath's
00:17:25when it comes back?
00:17:26No, it's interesting.
00:17:27This week, Farrat said, I've never really been
00:17:29on a winning team in my life through high school, college.
00:17:31That is amazing.
00:17:32Because you figure that kind of talent, he's got to win.

00:17:40And it's beyond Westbrook.
00:17:44Blayden Holmes was covering deep and had some help.

00:17:54learning how to play in this league.
00:17:56See, Westbrook still doesn't get that he can't outrun
00:18:00Gus Farrat's arm.

00:18:03he just kind of broke down right before the end zone
00:18:05instead of taking his pattern
00:18:06and then Farrat can get a better gauge for him.
00:18:08He's got to run his pattern full speed all the way through.

00:18:15A bit of a slump.
00:18:16This will be a 38-yard attempt.

00:43:53Right up the gut, it sure did, and a gain of 7.

00:45:13Jim Hannafin's not only one of the good guys of all time,
00:45:16but he's one of the most well-respected offensive line coaches in the league.
00:45:21It's funny because when you go from, you see Jim Hannafin just took off to the right,
00:45:26what he does is he will get this guy right here.
00:45:30He will get everybody on the same page,
00:45:32and you go around the league and everybody will say,
00:45:34boy, it's a Hannafin coached offensive line.

00:45:41Again, he was off balance but got big pressure from Haley on that play.
00:45:47That's a nice job right there by Clayton Holmes staying with his coverage.

00:46:26And interesting looking on from the Cowboys' sideline is Dion.
00:46:32Played the most games in a Washington Redskins uniform is that man,
00:46:35Monty Coleman, who played in 216 contests as a member of the Washington Redskins.

00:46:46Man could run.
00:46:48He was powerful.
00:46:50And the biggest thing he had was big playability.
00:46:52You always know if Monty was on the guy he was covering, don't throw a throw.
00:47:02On third down, Farad to throw, and his pass nearly intercepted by Scott Case.
00:47:08Boy, he read that perfectly.
00:47:10He saw Coleman bell from the snap of the ball,
00:47:13and Farad really put some heat on that thing.
00:47:16And probably the only reason he didn't catch the ball.

00:47:26Interesting, we showed you Dion Sanders when he came to the stadium today,

00:47:36Eddie Murray, who successful from 38 yards, will now try a 46-yard field goal.

00:54:28and the progress report, according to Deion,
00:54:30is that he should be ready to go in about a couple of weeks

00:54:36The Cowboys, for you to know, that they'll somehow muddle through,
00:54:40have a target date of about October 29th for Deion's debut
00:54:44when Dallas takes on Atlanta.

00:54:47And the one thing about Deion is that he is one thing as a showman,
00:54:51another thing as a teammate,
00:54:52and the Cowboys have kind of embraced him as a teammate already.
00:54:55Because they know he's a great football player.

00:55:05You know, when you look at this Cowboy defense,
00:55:08the one guy who's really, really stepped up his play

00:55:24but I've still been able to maintain my speed.
00:55:27I think he's playing at the top of his game right now.

00:55:40But Allen has gained 50 yards thus far on 11 carries.
00:55:45And as you look at the Redskins' first five possessions of this game,
00:55:49they have scored three of them.
00:55:52Yeah, we talked about it at the start of the game.
00:55:54Now, I think this Washington Redskins offense
00:55:57is one of the top five offenses in the league.
00:55:59They can move the football.
00:56:01If they can protect Farratt, they're going to eat some people up.
00:56:04Because they have the big play guys,
00:56:06and they have a good running game with Terry Allen.
00:56:09As long as those things and those components are together,
00:56:12and Norv Turner is calling the game the way things are being called,
00:56:16this team is going to score points and move the ball.
00:56:18Cowboys call the timeout.
00:56:20They have one left.
00:56:21And as Norv told us yesterday,
00:56:23we can get enough first downs and keep the defense off the field.
00:56:27We're doing our jobs.
00:56:28And looking at those possessions and how many plays they've had,
00:56:31they've done that in the first half.

00:56:34You always say, well, at the very least, we have to do this.

00:58:40And Allen is going to lose a yard or two.
00:58:43And Tony Tolbert came in strong and a loss of one.
00:58:53Watch Tony Tolbert, and really what I see with Tolbert is a young Charles Haley.
00:58:58The difference is Tolbert doesn't have the change of direction that Haley has.
00:59:02But he's got the good speed upfield.
00:59:04He understands and is learning how to run stunts.
00:59:07And he's also been a student with Haley.
00:59:09Haley's been teaching him what to look for, how to study, watch tapes, that kind of thing.
00:59:13This kid's going to be a good football player.
00:59:15He already is good.
00:59:16He has a chance to be a legitimate great one.
00:59:18And lucky to be learning under this guy, Haley.
00:59:20Third down and 11.
00:59:22Moran on a slam pass, caught by Michael Westbrook.
00:59:25And he carried the defender, Larry Brown, a few yards as well.
00:59:30And the Redskins were the first down after a big 16-yard game.
00:59:34And the Redskins will use up a timeout, and they have one remaining.
00:59:42So you go aggressive at the point.
00:59:43Boom. Get right there.
00:59:44Get his hands down so the ball can come quick.
00:59:47And then on the other end, Michael Westbrook has got to get to the inside of Brown.
00:59:51And then just use your body.
00:59:52Use it as a shield.
00:59:53Get it between the defender and the ball, and that means first down.
00:59:58Westbrook is tough to bring down.

01:01:35Well, they had to protect Gus Farrad if they were going to have any success,
01:01:38and here they do.
01:01:39And this ball is thrown, you see him doubling Haley.
01:01:42This ball is thrown before Ehler ever makes his break.
01:01:45He knows he has him inside, so that gives him the outside to work with.
01:01:49And the ball, when he makes his break, is in flight.
01:01:52That was the first catch of the game for Henry Ehler.

01:02:52Heck, the way he's playing, he'd like to see 16 Cowboys on the schedule.

01:03:11You know, there's some things, like we talked about, that can't be caught,

01:03:17but watch the will to make this play by Terry Ehler.

01:03:22Boom, right in the face, and then throws him off,
01:03:25and then goes through another one.
01:03:27That is a great, great play.
01:03:30And notice how the ball crossed the plane,

01:03:40Actually, look at this concentration.

01:03:43And then watch your presence.
01:03:45You know where you're at on the field.
01:03:50And how is Gus Peratt enjoying this?
01:03:53I think in a big way.
01:03:54His second touchdown pass of the game,
01:03:57and it's 20-10 in favor of the Redskins,
01:04:01who have been shellacked in their last three meetings
01:04:04against the Dallas Cowboys.
01:04:10You know, when I watched that the second time,
01:04:13I could take another look at it,
01:04:15see if he didn't step out of bounds
01:04:17before he got the ball over.
01:04:24Kendall Watkins, yeah, he thought that,
01:04:26he was going to flip it up to Kevin Williams.
01:04:28That could be risky.
01:04:29Very.
01:04:32You don't want to play around like that.
