00:00:00Some great receivers in his best job. Give the ball to Emmitt Smith. Okay. What about Bernie Kosar?
00:00:06How fast does he picked up things here for the Cowboys Jimmy Johnson expected him to have 30 plays available in his part of the
00:00:11Game plan. Well, he and North Turner got together. He has 63 plays on a list on his wrist. Troy Aikman is inactive
00:00:17He is not dressed for this game in uniform. So inactive today. How about Emmitt Smith's game plan?
00:00:24Emmitt Smith's game plan, 30 to 35 carries, 150 yards plus and catch some ground on Barry Sanders' idol today.
00:00:31Question also during the week, who would start at quarterback for the Cardinals? It'll be Chris Chandler who posted big numbers against Dallas last year.
00:00:38He led them to victory, in fact, last week to Chandler against the Eagles. And what a big game for their running back, rookie Ron Moore a week ago.
00:00:45Feature the attack running game. Go after the Dallas defense. Don't try to run sideways. They're too fast.
00:00:52And the Cardinals will have it begin this game as Phoenix has won the toss. Eddie Murray.
00:01:00The kick to Johnny Bailey and Anthony Edwards.
00:01:04Murray's kick. Bailey slips at the goal line. Better get on it. And it'll be a touchback.
00:01:22Chris Chandler starting for the second straight week. Steve Berline, the backup for the Cowboys last year, with a banged up knee so Chandler gets the call.
00:01:36Here's the offensive line that helped power the Cardinals to 200 plus yards rushing a week ago.
00:01:42In the backfield, Ron Moore, third leading rookie rusher in pro football.
00:01:47Randall Hill starts in front of Gary Clark. Ricky Cole reads and rolls.
00:01:54He'll actually come out with Larry Sinners in the backfield, but the pitch is to Ron Moore and he darts ahead for about six.
00:02:04Here's the Dallas Cowboys defense.
00:02:10Jeff Koch will start ahead of Haley. Back problems for Haley, but he will see action.
00:02:16Linebackers, the outstanding rookie Darren Smith from Miami. Norton's in the middle with Dixon Edwards, also on the outside.
00:02:22And the secondary, Brown and Smith on the corners. Everett and Woodson are the safeties.
00:02:28Second down and four.
00:02:30Way too high for Walter Reeves.
00:02:46Chris Chandler has tried to change the attitude here in the last two weeks. Randy is talking about having a lot of fun, trying to loosen up the bunch from Phoenix.
00:02:55I think this entire team and organization is so uptight after Bill Bidwell, their owner, gave them that ultimatum at the beginning of the year.
00:03:02Then they get reminded of it on a weekly basis.
00:03:04And Chandler just brought up the fact that, hey, guys, it is just a game. It's supposed to be fun.
00:03:09Let's just go out and have fun. This is a team and a whole city and organization.
00:03:13They've got nothing to lose football-wise.
00:03:19Chandler, hit when he threw it, the pass at the feet of Ricky Prohl. Gant on the coverage.
00:03:25And Russell Maryland was all over Chandler.
00:03:29Watch the penetration, and he gets his penetration by the first two steps.
00:03:33Watch Maryland, 67 right there. He is by Mark May.
00:03:37Cunningham, the center, slips, and Maryland is gone.
00:03:41And the key for the Cardinals from a passing standpoint is throwing quick passes.
00:03:45This is not a tall defensive line in the middle for the Dallas Cowboys, but you can't let them penetrate.
00:03:50Camarillo to punt to Kevin Williams. Camarillo second to Roby in punting.
00:04:03Solid punt. Fair catch made at the 39-yard line.
00:04:0835 yards, no return.
00:04:12Jason Garrett's first start in the NFL, the last time he won as a starting quarterback,
00:04:18his senior year at Princeton in a game against Yale, five years ago this month.
00:04:23The offensive line remains the same for the ninth straight game this season.
00:04:282 and 8, Newton, Stepnoski, Gogan, and Williams. Emmitt Smith.
00:04:33666 yards for Smith. He returned after the holdout in the first game against Phoenix.
00:04:40It was week three of the season.
00:04:43Smith's first action of 93.
00:04:50Here he is, Emmitt, for a quick five.
00:04:54Chris Oldham on the hit.
00:04:58The Cardinals' big nickel defense revamped this week because of injuries.
00:05:02Mike Jones, Keith Rucker, Reuben Davis, Bankston Swann is noticeably absent,
00:05:07out for the year with a knee injury. Hill and Stowe are the linebackers.
00:05:11And they go with five members of the secondary.
00:05:14Massey with Zordich, Oldham, Lynch, and Aeneas Williams.
00:05:18Chuck Cecil will be playing only an obvious passing down.
00:05:21He's still suffering from a shoulder and neck injury.
00:05:24Second down, five. Garrett, hands off again.
00:05:28Smith this time stacked up after about two by Tyrone Stowe.
00:05:33And this game for Dallas really rests in the hands of that big offensive line of the Cowboys.
00:05:38It's the best offensive line right now in the league,
00:05:41and this will be a game that will be about the closest to the old Houston Veer wishbone offense
00:05:45you're going to see from a pro team.
00:05:47They're going to have that offensive line come off as much as possible,
00:05:50stay on the blocks, and let Emmitt pick his holes,
00:05:53because the last thing they want is a young quarterback like Garrett
00:05:56to have to throw the ball, or an inexperienced in this offense quarterback
00:06:00like Bernie Kosar put in a pressure situation.
00:06:02Let's see what Garrett does here on third down and three for the Cowboys.
00:06:08Watch the middle.
00:06:10Williams was defending on Irvin, and the flag comes in late.
00:06:17Making a flag from the back like that,
00:06:19that's the official calling an early contact or holding.
00:06:26Holding.
00:06:27Number 35 defense, five yards, automatic first down.
00:06:33So Jason Garrett's first pass is sort of successful.
00:06:37You don't have to complete them to move the ball down the field,
00:06:39and you be the judge here on how early the contact comes and the hold.
00:06:45And Nias Williams having one of the better years of cornerbacks in the league
00:06:48is caught right there in a situation where he was holding, I guess, with his right hand
00:06:53as the left hand went around to block the ball.
00:06:57So a first down for the Cowboys from midfield.
00:07:05Garrett takes a step front, good pass.
00:07:09Michael Irvin knocked out of bounds at the 33.
00:07:13Actually, they rule him not out of bounds, but mark it at the 33, a gain of 16 yards.
00:07:19And you'll see situations like this in the passing game from the Dallas Cowboys
00:07:22where you're constantly tempted to say, well, gee, Troy would have thrown this on a rope,
00:07:26and that's because of the timing and the ability of these receivers and quarterbacks to sync up.
00:07:32Garrett lobs it in, same effect, same yards.
00:07:39First down for the Cowboys from the Phoenix 33.
00:07:45Smith straight ahead.
00:07:47Nassie has a hold of him at the 26.
00:07:54We'd like to welcome those of you who have watched the 49ers defeat Tampa Bay 45-21.
00:08:00Jerry Rice caught four touchdowns in that game.
00:08:03Jim Nance and Randy Cross from Texas Stadium.
00:08:06The Cardinals won the toss, but they had the punt after three downs and out.
00:08:11And now the Cowboys on their opening possession are driving.
00:08:14They picked up a first down on a third down play on an interference call
00:08:18against the Cardinals' Aeneas Williams.
00:08:24On second and three, Smith to about the 24.
00:08:29Nassie on the hit.
00:08:35And we'd like to welcome those of you who have watched the Giants advance to 6-3 on the season.
00:08:41They held the Redskins today to only a couple of field goals,
00:08:45and they sweep the Redskins on the season.
00:08:47Jim Nance and Randy Cross at Texas Stadium with 10.45 remaining in the first quarter.
00:08:52No score.
00:08:55Cardinals had the first possession of this game, but were forced to punt.
00:09:00And now the Cowboys driving on their first series.
00:09:02They start at Jason Garrett at quarterback.
00:09:05Now facing third and one.
00:09:06Emmitt Smith will not get the first down.
00:09:09The correct hill came up to make the hit and take him back for a loss.
00:09:14And one of the real pluses and byproducts of having a big defensive line like the Cardinals have
00:09:19is having a linebacker behind them who more often than not is not going to be hit,
00:09:23is not going to be picked up by an offensive lineman, and can run sideline to sideline.
00:09:29So Eddie Murray, who was signed the third week of the season.
00:09:35You saw his performance, 16 out of 19.
00:09:37It's been sterling.
00:09:38This is a 44-yard try.
00:09:41Novacek on the hold.
00:09:43And the Cowboys on their first possession net free.
00:09:47Three over here.
00:09:48Going forward for Smith.
00:09:51One minute, 52 seconds remaining.
00:09:53No score.
00:09:54Ball three.
00:09:55The game is tied.
00:09:56There's no such thing as a moral victory in football,
00:09:58but the Cardinals on their first possession defensively have to be happy that they did not give up a touchdown
00:10:04because they aren't attacking this Dallas defense right now.
00:10:07They aren't coming out with the change of pace you might have expected.
00:10:10They're just playing them as a good, solid defense.
00:10:19Six seconds to go, and the Packers will attempt a game-winning field goal.
00:10:23Chris Jackie at the Superdome.
00:10:28About 49ers now, 6-3.
00:10:32So are the Giants.
00:10:35Don Shula gets win number 325.
00:10:38Philadelphia was driving late in that game,
00:10:40and James Lofton dropped a key pass that would have given the Eagles a first and goal at the 5
00:10:45within two minutes to go in that game.
00:10:49Raiders have scored a quick touchdown, and Seahawks over Cleveland.
00:11:02And the word on the field goal from Green Bay is good.
00:11:06Chris Jackie from 36 yards, and Green Bay leads 19-17 with three seconds remaining.
00:11:14Here's Johnny Bailey.
00:11:16Cardinals running it out from the 5.
00:11:19James Washington gets a wrap on him at the 26.
00:11:24So here's a look at it.
00:11:25Jackie from 36 yards at the Superdome.
00:11:29Now they'll kick to the Saints.
00:11:31The Packers trying to get to 5-4.
00:11:35Talking to the Cardinals this week, Randy,
00:11:37they said we have to play a perfect game to have a chance against the Cowboys.
00:11:42They're very perceptive.
00:11:44They have to play a perfect game here.
00:11:46What they need perfection-wise is to have more running the ball effectively inside.
00:11:50Chris Chandler throwing the ball outside short,
00:11:53and their defense stopping Emmitt Smith.
00:11:55That's perfect.
00:11:58Out of the eye.
00:11:59Centers is the fullback.
00:12:01Moore is the tailback.
00:12:02Coming up to make the play is Ken Norton.
00:12:08Give yourself a hand for that one.
00:12:09Beautiful play.
00:12:10You've heard a lot about these Dallas Cowboys playing so well,
00:12:14and people want to say, well, gee, they're not really hurt.
00:12:16They haven't had any injuries.
00:12:17Well, Troy Aikman's got a bad hamstring.
00:12:21Norton tore his bicep muscle.
00:12:23Charles Haley's got a bad back.
00:12:25This is a team that is banged up.
00:12:27It's injured.
00:12:28But when you're on this kind of roll and you're winning,
00:12:30there's a big difference between pain and injury.
00:12:32Phoenix doesn't want to hear about injuries.
00:12:35They've got their share as well.
00:12:37Second down and ten.
00:12:41Randall Hill dropped it.
00:12:43That would have given the Cardinals a first down at the 38.
00:12:46He was clobbered by Larry Brown and Thomas Everett.
00:12:51You'll see Randall Hill coming over towards the middle
00:12:59with a high pass from Chandler,
00:13:01and he plays the peanut butter and jelly to the sandwich
00:13:05right there in the middle.
00:13:06That's a heck of a shot.
00:13:08It's the kind of catch that Randall Hill, I think,
00:13:10was very known for at Miami,
00:13:12and it's the kind of catch that Randall Hill has had the most
00:13:14difficulty with here in the NFL.
00:13:16It is third and ten.
00:13:17Charles Haley has come in for the first time for the Cowboys.
00:13:20Jeff Coats started at defensive end.
00:13:24On third and ten, the pass incomplete.
00:13:28Intended for Gary Clark, who wanted an interference call.
00:13:33Bill Bates helping out on the secondary with James Washington.
00:13:38We're now up to two series.
00:13:40It seems that Butch Davis' Dallas defense has just decided,
00:13:44hey, we're going to get extremely physical with the receivers
00:13:47of the Cardinals.
00:13:48If they want to try to run the ball to set up the pass,
00:13:50we're going to take their wide receivers out of the game.
00:13:53You've seen every time they've dropped back the pass,
00:13:55the defenders for Dallas have been all over the Cardinal receivers.
00:13:59Three downs and out for the second straight time,
00:14:02and Camarillo to kick to Kevin Williams.
00:14:10Big one, too.
00:14:11Backpedaling to the 20.
00:14:13Williams gets a look straight ahead, takes a tackle,
00:14:17and stumbles out across to the 31-yard line.
00:14:21That one traveled 54 yards, 11 yards on the run back,
00:14:26and the rookie from Miami has a few words.
00:14:31Special teams, special team members of the Cardinals.
00:14:36But the Cowboys and Jason Garrett were expecting to see Bernie Kosar,
00:14:41both of them alternating in and out during this game today.
00:14:46Jimmy Johnson says that is going to happen.
00:14:49Bernie Kosar will come in when things are a little more solid,
00:14:53not when we're backed up.
00:15:03The pitch, Emmitt Smith, good room,
00:15:07and plows ahead to the 42 with a flag.
00:15:1112-yard run by Smith,
00:15:14and we'd like to welcome those of you who've watched the Green Bay Packers
00:15:18rebound from the Monday night loss at Kansas City.
00:15:21Chris Jackie's field goal won it in the closing seconds.
00:15:24Jim Nansen, Randy Cross from Texas Stadium.
00:15:28Offense, number 80, 10 yards, repeat first down.
00:15:34And our referee Larry Nemers gets that penalty on Alvin Harper,
00:15:38and one thing the receivers for Jimmy Johnson do extremely well,
00:15:41Harper and Irvin, is block.
00:15:43They block extremely well, and Irvin keeps making the point,
00:15:46my blocking sets up my pass receiving.
00:15:50For those of you who just joined us, the Cowboys lead 3-0.
00:15:54Cardinals have had the football in two possessions
00:15:56and have failed to pick up a first down.
00:15:59Cowboys now with their second series,
00:16:02the first time they drove as deep as the Phoenix 24-yard line,
00:16:06eventually settling for an Eddie Murray field goal from 44 yards.
00:16:148-30 remaining first quarter.
00:16:23Harper's on the field taking the halftime food orders.
00:16:29Pepperoni or mushrooms?
00:16:33The holding on the offensive team occurred 9 yards downfield.
00:16:38The 10-yard penalty will be assessed from the spot of the foul.
00:16:42It'll be first and 11.
00:16:44The Cowboys have to like that instead of first and 20,
00:16:47which they were about to get underway.
00:16:51To get underway, it's going to be first and 11.
00:16:55And that block started on the line of scrimmage.
00:16:57By the time they called it, it was 9 yards down the field.
00:17:00Because Harper was all over him.
00:17:20Please set the game clock to 8-26.
00:17:238-26.
00:17:26So the timing issue will be settled.
00:17:30And the clock has inadvertently run to 8-20.
00:17:33So they replenish the time by six seconds.
00:17:38And the Cowboys set now for first and 11.
00:17:41Eric Hill on the tackle with Smith.
00:17:44At the 34.
00:17:47Garrett's first NFL starboard.
00:17:50Of course, excluding the preseason.
00:17:53Played a little bit in the CFL with Ottawa.
00:17:56And then in the World League with the San Antonio Riders,
00:17:59he started three games.
00:18:01And then in the World League, he started four games.
00:18:04Played a little bit in the CFL with Ottawa.
00:18:07And then in the World League with the San Antonio Riders,
00:18:10he started three games.
00:18:11Didn't win in any of the three games.
00:18:14That's why we told you at the top,
00:18:16his last win as a starting quarterback.
00:18:18November of 88, when he quarterbacked Princeton
00:18:22and passed Yale.
00:18:26If that's a whistle, that's a whistle.
00:18:27But it sounds like a grinding halt alarm to me for the last two
00:18:30or three plays on this thing.
00:18:32The officials have sort of taken over.
00:18:37False start prior to the snap.
00:18:39Number 79 offense, five yards, still second down.
00:18:47Well, this series has been a little bit disrupted.
00:18:51Cowboys have had the football for eight plays,
00:18:54and seven of them have been running attempts by Emmitt Smith.
00:18:59Second down and 12.
00:19:04Phoenix in the 3-4 defense, anticipating a pass out of Dallas.
00:19:12Great protection.
00:19:14And the ball taken out of the hands of Smith.
00:19:17Ken Harvey came in.
00:19:19You know, Jim, he should have had all the time in the world.
00:19:21When you're rushing three defensive linemen against that Dallas offense,
00:19:27Garrett should stand back there all by himself.
00:19:29Watch the guys up front coming out.
00:19:31You've got Jones Bankston and Freddie Joe Nunn, and this is a mismatch.
00:19:36Garrett could have stayed back there another ten seconds
00:19:38to see if somebody could have come open.
00:19:45Third down and 12, and the Cardinals shore up the defense
00:19:49with Chuck Cecil in the game.
00:19:51Kevin Williams in as a receiver for Dallas.
00:19:56Garrett, long ball in the area of Harper,
00:20:01but he ran the route somewhat out of bounds.
00:20:03Was pushed out, I believe, more like it near midfield.
00:20:08And he's telling them about it.
00:20:10You can guarantee you Alvin Harper is going to tell everybody what he thinks,
00:20:14whether you've got a striped shirt on, a red shirt on, a Dallas coach's shirt on.
00:20:18He's a guy of many opinions, and he will voice it.
00:20:23Johnny Bailey, who has run a punt back for a touchdown this season
00:20:27that came in the first quarter against the Redskins at RFK.
00:20:33John Jett to the 18.
00:20:38Here comes Bailey.
00:20:40Johnny Bailey to the 32.
00:20:43We have 6.52 remaining in the first quarter,
00:20:47and there is a flag on that punt return.
00:20:49Punt of 53 yards by John Jett.
00:20:54May have been a face mask.
00:20:58You know, I mentioned the Bailey run back for a touchdown.
00:21:02Hold against the Cardinals.
00:21:04The Phoenix offense has not scored a touchdown in the first quarter
00:21:08of this season in nine games.
00:21:10They have two touchdowns.
00:21:11One was a fumble return.
00:21:13Holding on the return team, number 83.
00:21:16Ten yards from the spot of the foul.
00:21:18First down.
00:21:20One touchdown in the first quarter on a fumble recovery by Aeneas Williams.
00:21:23The other, the run back on a punt by Johnny Bailey.
00:21:26But the offense will be on the field for the Cardinals when we come back.
00:21:29Three nothing Cowboys in the first.
00:21:33Dallas leads on an Eddie Murray field goal from 44 yards.
00:21:37Chris Chandler and the Cardinals wanting to have a lot of fun,
00:21:41but it hasn't been the case so far on offense.
00:21:43Not offensively.
00:21:44Six plays, six yards.
00:21:46They're averaging 308 yards a game offensively,
00:21:49so only 302 plays to go to go to their average yardage.
00:21:52Chandler, who started 13 games last year at quarterback,
00:21:56has missed on his first four attempts.
00:21:59First down, Phoenix from its 22.
00:22:05John Moore right into the wall at the line of scrimmage.
00:22:10Right into the wall at the line of scrimmage.
00:22:13Tony Tolbert smacked him first.
00:22:19Watch what the defensive line does on this play for the Dallas defense.
00:22:23It is very impressive.
00:22:24All the way across here, they are just going to do it.
00:22:27They're going to get the offensive line.
00:22:29They're going to stand them up.
00:22:31Watch them stand them up, maintain their spots.
00:22:33There is nowhere for Moore to go.
00:22:35You can't hit slow against the Dallas defense.
00:22:38If you don't attack them right away, you might as well not run.
00:22:44Second down and nine.
00:22:48Chandler, first completion.
00:22:50It's put to roll, but only for short yardage.
00:22:53Dixon Edwards was with him man for man.
00:23:00Another good example of that speed of the Dallas defense.
00:23:02Seems like Rolls out there all by himself.
00:23:04He's got five, six, seven yards,
00:23:06and suddenly that gap is closed quickly.
00:23:12Let's see if the Cardinals can pick up a first down.
00:23:15They haven't had one so far.
00:23:18This year, the go-to guy, the man they want to get the ball to,
00:23:22has been Ricky Cole.
00:23:24Gary Clark is in the game.
00:23:27Shifting around on third and sixth.
00:23:34Chandler, no Cardinal in the area.
00:23:42This is a real quick way of wearing out your own defense.
00:23:47That pass there was over Joe Bugle's head.
00:23:49It was obviously a lack of communication between the receivers on that side,
00:23:53Randall Hill, Ricky Cole, and Chandler,
00:23:56because Chandler, the nearest people to that were the defenders of Dallas.
00:24:00So the Phoenix defense will have to return,
00:24:02because once again, the Cardinals, three plays and a punt.
00:24:07And it's a beat-up defense, Jim.
00:24:09They can't afford to keep that defense on the field.
00:24:12Camarillo's last punt traveled 54 yards.
00:24:16Williams at the 30, takes the first man down there.
00:24:22Hooked, brought down by Larry Sinners at the 35.
00:24:2444-yard punt, five-yard run back.
00:24:28The Cowboys, with that six-game win streak, leading 3-0 in the opening quarter.
00:24:39CBS Sports coverage of the National Football League
00:24:42is sponsored by Cadillac and your Cadillac dealer, creating a higher standard.
00:24:46McDonald's, what you want is what you get at McDonald's today.
00:24:50The new Norelco razors, our closest shave ever.
00:24:54Jerry Cannon, a world leader in office equipment.
00:24:59First down for the Cowboys and gets set for Bernie Kosar's first play as the Cowboy.
00:25:08Play action.
00:25:10Complete to Irvin at the 50.
00:25:14And that, Jim, is why Bernie Kosar came into the game right now.
00:25:19Garrett was ineffective throwing the ball, was getting good pass protection,
00:25:23and they just want a chance to get the ball in the air and get some yards.
00:25:26Now take a look at Irvin working here against Robert Massey.
00:25:29This is a timing pattern.
00:25:31Quarterback has to have faith.
00:25:33Receiver has to have faith the ball will be there.
00:25:35Kosar zips it out on a rope.
00:25:39Irvin is shaken up.
00:25:43We'll take a timeout.
00:25:453-0 Cowboys.
00:25:49♪♪♪
00:25:56When you have your tires aligned, they use the term high-speed wobble.
00:26:00Well, watch the left ankle of Michael Irvin do a high-speed wobble right there
00:26:05on this AstroTurf as the turf bites, the foot doesn't move,
00:26:09and the rest of the body does.
00:26:12So the leading receiver, almost 900 yards on the season,
00:26:16hobbles to the sideline, replaced by Kevin Williams.
00:26:19Now on first down, Michael Bankston.
00:26:22The big tackle for a loss on Emmitt Smith.
00:26:25Dropped him for about a four-yard setback.
00:26:28Earlier in the quarter, we saw a great job of penetration by Russell Merrill
00:26:31into the Cowboys.
00:26:32Watch 63, Bankston working right there against Jay Novacek,
00:26:38comes straight upfield.
00:26:40Novacek does not get his head back in front of him,
00:26:42and that's the basic when you're a lineman, a running back,
00:26:45or a receiver trying to block.
00:26:47You've got to get your head in front of a defensive lineman
00:26:49or they'll run right through.
00:26:50Great example.
00:26:51Bankston, second year from Sam Houston State, returns to his home state.
00:26:56He drops Smith for a five-yard loss.
00:26:59Bernie's second pass is a Cowboy.
00:27:02It is complete as well, and it's Daryl Johnston, loose for about five.
00:27:08It'll be third and ten for the Cowboys.
00:27:113.30 remaining in the first quarter.
00:27:16And a good confidence throw by Bernie Kozar.
00:27:19So far, he's going to have an effective running game.
00:27:22This is the best running game in the league, I think.
00:27:24And passing-wise, he's got to get these timing patterns down.
00:27:27He's got to get some completions under his belt
00:27:29before he tries to do anything complicated.
00:27:32He's got the plays on his left wrist.
00:27:44Bernie called a timeout.
00:27:50Timeout called by the Cowboys.
00:27:533.07 remaining in the first quarter.
00:27:55Dallas near midfield, leading by a field goal.
00:27:59Kozar had to take a timeout for the Cowboys.
00:28:03There's the wristband, the plays reduced on the computer
00:28:09to a small-sized 63 plays on that wrist.
00:28:14Third down and nine, we'll call it.
00:28:16Michael Irvin, by the way, back in the game.
00:28:19And there he is, Irvin, at the 31-yard line.
00:28:23First down, Dallas.
00:28:26Gee, what a shame.
00:28:27Too bad Bernie can't throw anymore, huh?
00:28:29Definitely looks like diminishing skills to me.
00:28:32Without a doubt.
00:28:33I mean, that ball never got off a line.
00:28:36That's not a good sign for a quarterback.
00:28:38They shouldn't do things like that.
00:28:40Michael Irvin down the field.
00:28:42Good, crisp pattern.
00:28:44And just cuts underneath there.
00:28:46That ball is delivered nearly perfectly.
00:28:48Massey played good defense.
00:28:50Nice pass by Bernie.
00:28:56First down from the 31.
00:29:04Smith goes to the outside.
00:29:06Jordan brings him down to the 17.
00:29:11That's just finding a hole.
00:29:13He was going off left guard, left tackle,
00:29:16and then scooted to the outside for 15.
00:29:19And that's the kind of thing that an Emmitt Smith
00:29:21or a Barry Sanders can kill you with.
00:29:23Against a four-man line, these things happen.
00:29:26The defensive line did a fine job
00:29:28of holding up the offensive line.
00:29:30The pursuit from the inside with the linebackers
00:29:32and the extra safety from the defensive backfield
00:29:35wasn't there.
00:29:36Emmitt saw it and just took a shot.
00:29:38Smith with 37 yards rushing here in this first quarter.
00:29:44Garrett directed the first two drives.
00:29:47Led them to a field goal.
00:29:49Now Kosar's first series.
00:29:51And Smith down to the 11.
00:29:551.25 remaining first quarter.
00:29:58Jimmy Johnson and the Cowboys lead 3-0.
00:30:02Nate Newton threw a good block for Smith.
00:30:04And remember, Emmitt Smith is chasing Barry Sanders
00:30:07who is idle today.
00:30:09Detroit has the day off.
00:30:10Sanders takes advantage of a nice block by Michael Irvin.
00:30:14Take a look at this.
00:30:16Irvin coming off, going inside for a safety.
00:30:19Not a physical block.
00:30:20More of a wall block and a semi-hold.
00:30:22But they don't call it.
00:30:23It's not holding.
00:30:24It's a nice job by Michael Irvin.
00:30:26Second and four.
00:30:32Smith moving the pile to about the eight.
00:30:37A little shy, I believe, on the first down.
00:30:40Let's see where they spot it.
00:30:42And you really sense a bounce back in the Dallas offense.
00:30:45I mean, they're coming up off the ground faster.
00:30:47They seem to be in the huddle with confidence.
00:30:49Bernie Kosar has made a difference for these veterans.
00:30:52They have the confidence that a veteran like Kosar demands.
00:30:58They're going to bring the chains out,
00:31:00and Bernie will steal some time to go over
00:31:02and talk with Jimmy Johnson and Robert Ford,
00:31:07who is the running backs coach for the Cowboys.
00:31:12And this is the key part of the field
00:31:14when you start thinking about new quarterbacks and new systems.
00:31:18Down here in the red zone when you're throwing the ball
00:31:20is when everybody has to be on the exact same thought process inside.
00:31:25The defenses drop.
00:31:26You have to throw underneath the defenses.
00:31:29Bernie Kosar in his ninth year in the NFL.
00:31:33He and Jimmy Johnson cross paths for one season at Miami.
00:31:41That was 1984.
00:31:43Johnson's first year at Miami.
00:31:49Third and less than a yard.
00:31:50Eighth play of this series.
00:31:52Time running down first quarter.
00:31:56In it.
00:31:57First down.
00:32:00And Wiggles to the four.
00:32:04And Wiggles and Wiggles and goes.
00:32:06And goes.
00:32:12Kosar driving them toward the end zone.
00:32:16And that's the end of the first quarter with the score,
00:32:19the Dallas Cowboys three, the Phoenix Cardinals nothing.
00:32:28We start the second quarter at Texas Stadium.
00:32:31Dallas leads three, nothing,
00:32:32and the Cowboys have it first and goal from the five.
00:32:36Jim Nance and Randy Cross with you this afternoon.
00:32:39Glad to have you with us.
00:32:43Kind of surprised how quick Irvin got back into the lineup
00:32:46after we saw that replay and the ankle rolled over,
00:32:49but he's right back in there with a key reception on this series.
00:32:54Actually two.
00:32:57Two tied in.
00:32:59Smith.
00:33:00Outside.
00:33:01Lynch comes after him, but can't get him.
00:33:03Touchdown Dallas Cowboys.
00:33:21Everything Jimmy Johnson does is based on speed.
00:33:25And here's a great example of what speed can do.
00:33:27There is nothing there.
00:33:29You saw Robert Massey fill inside.
00:33:31When Emmitt saw him fill inside, he knew the outside was open,
00:33:35and that's when the speed comes into play.
00:33:45Ten-nothing Cowboys.
00:33:47Scoring on the first play of the second quarter.
00:33:55And welcome to Big D, Bernie Kosar.
00:33:57He drives him for a touchdown in his first series.
00:34:05Well, the game summary.
00:34:06Kosar and Garrett sharing the quarterback duties today.
00:34:10Smith scores his eleventh rushing touchdown of his career
00:34:14against the Cardinals.
00:34:17Phoenix with ten yards in three series.
00:34:21How about Dallas's 108 yards?
00:34:23Randy, you were doing some calculations.
00:34:25Well, I figured out that they got a 50-50 split going
00:34:28with 54 running and 54 passing.
00:34:30You'd call that a little balanced, wouldn't you?
00:34:32Because they need to run it successfully
00:34:35to give Chandler a little breathing room.
00:34:37He's getting hammered.
00:34:40Through the back of the end zone.
00:34:46Let's take a look at that touchdown.
00:34:48I mentioned Robert Massey.
00:34:49Watch him here and Emmitt here.
00:34:51As Emmitt comes, he fills,
00:34:53and you see Emmitt immediately react outside.
00:34:58There goes Emmitt up, there goes Massey up,
00:35:00and when he sees Massey fill, he's gone.
00:35:06So the Cardinals start right back at the 20 again.
00:35:22Ricky Prohl steps out of bounds at the 29.
00:35:30Ricky Prohl has caught six touchdowns this season
00:35:33and had a franchise-tying streak of five consecutive games
00:35:38with at least one touchdown.
00:35:40Although he hasn't found the end zone in a couple of weeks,
00:35:43so he might be a little anxious to get back to Bader.
00:35:47Well, football's an important thing,
00:35:49and he's also extremely happy.
00:35:50He and his wife Kelly had a little baby girl,
00:35:53so he's just got that kind of new father smile on his face,
00:35:56and that would make him happy to get a touchdown.
00:35:59Alexandria, congratulations.
00:36:02Second and one, and that's a first-down carry by Ron Moore.
00:36:06What about this rookie running back from Pittsburgh State?
00:36:10He was a fourth-rounder.
00:36:11All the headlines, of course, entering the year
00:36:13centered around Garris and Burst,
00:36:15but Moore has been something else.
00:36:17Moore is a guy that really benefited from the holdout
00:36:20of Garris and Hurst in the preseason.
00:36:22He's the guy who came into camp, got all the reps,
00:36:24started to get noticed, and suddenly he leads them in rushing.
00:36:28Hurst comes in, does some,
00:36:29but even that opener against Philadelphia,
00:36:31Moore had a good game and hasn't let up much.
00:36:34160 yards for a rookie is incredible.
00:36:37How does he follow it up? We'll see today.
00:36:39The numbers last week, 160 the most by a running back
00:36:42at Phoenix in eight years.
00:36:45Handler threw it away as the Cowboys were blitzing.
00:36:48Russell Maryland had some heat on the quarterback.
00:36:54Leon Lett returns to action today.
00:36:58He's in right now for the Cowboys.
00:37:00And this is a Dallas defense
00:37:02that is without basically Charles Haley.
00:37:04You will see him some,
00:37:05but the Cowboys' most disruptive defender
00:37:08is still suffering from that back
00:37:10that will bother him most of the day
00:37:12and playing in his stead is Jeff Coate.
00:37:14But look for Dallas to come after Chandler
00:37:16in these situations.
00:37:17They know the receivers can be muscled.
00:37:21Second down and 10.
00:37:24Chandler, good grab by Anthony Edwards.
00:37:27Yes, he makes the catch.
00:37:30At the 41, it'll be third and a yard to go.
00:37:35And Edwards has really benefited from Randall Hill's inability
00:37:40of late of making plays,
00:37:42and Edwards has taken advantage of that.
00:37:44Nice job of laying out and getting the arms and hands
00:37:47between the ball and the ground.
00:38:00Dallas and Eric Williams checking out some formations.
00:38:04Third and one.
00:38:07And the Cardinals dive with Ron Moore.
00:38:13They had Garth Jax lined up as a fullback,
00:38:18and he helped clear the way for Phoenix's second first down.
00:38:22Garth Jax came in on that short yardage situation.
00:38:26Two weeks ago, as a lead blocker,
00:38:28suffered a bit of a concussion,
00:38:30got knocked out of the game for a while,
00:38:32but it's something that Joe Buga just had to have.
00:38:34He doesn't have a big physical fullback type,
00:38:37and especially with the injuries he's had,
00:38:39he's had to resort to the linebacker.
00:38:41Cardinals moving the football for the first time today.
00:38:44First down and 10 on the bootleg.
00:38:46Centers has it, makes a nice move,
00:38:49and gets into Dallas territory,
00:38:51Cardinals and Cowboy territory for the first time.
00:38:55We've got an update,
00:38:56so we'll send it back to New York to Greg Gumbel.
00:38:59All right, Joe, Mile High Stadium in Denver
00:39:01from three yards out.
00:39:02Al Pino with the touchdown.
00:39:04Denver's lead over the Vikings is now 13-3 early in the second quarter.
00:39:08Back to Big Jim and Big Randy and Big D.
00:39:11And I think I saw some big flakes at Mile High Stadium,
00:39:15and Denver leading by 10,
00:39:17as are the Cowboys, 10-0 in this one.
00:39:20They're going to bring out the chains
00:39:22to see if the Cardinals picked up the first down.
00:39:25You see Derek Lassig, the rookie running back,
00:39:27in the first game between these two,
00:39:29he scored two touchdowns.
00:39:32Cardinals move the chains one more time.
00:39:40Joe Bugle knows the best way to defense this Dallas defense
00:39:44is to have your offense do these kinds of things,
00:39:46hold on to the ball, move the chains, get first downs.
00:39:49But the challenge for the Phoenix offense really is
00:39:52when you get on the Dallas side of the ball,
00:39:54what can you do?
00:39:55Can you get it in the end zone?
00:39:57Ron Moore.
00:40:00Chad Hennings brings them down at the 44.
00:40:0411-30 remaining in the first half.
00:40:25Eight play of this series,
00:40:28and it's second and seven.
00:40:35Chandler.
00:40:37Troll came back inbounds for it,
00:40:40and he's down to the 10.
00:40:42Now he was out of bounds and came back in to make the catch.
00:40:45And that was caught by two officials,
00:40:47two flags hit the ground,
00:40:49not to mention Chris Chandler who really hit the ground.
00:40:53Jim Jeffcoat pummeled the quarterback.
00:40:59I'm glad we got rid of replay
00:41:03so we could quicken the pace of the football games
00:41:05here in the league.
00:41:06We replaced replay with delay.
00:41:10Dropped replay but it reinvented the art of conferencing.
00:41:16And this just might be sorta like a Holyfield bow
00:41:19with that delay they had in the fight
00:41:21to get the ball to the left.
00:41:23And they didn't have the delay.
00:41:26And I think that's what it was,
00:41:28is they got a little bit more play on the ball
00:41:30and they got a little bit more free play,
00:41:33but they didn't have enough speed.
00:41:35And that's just what happens in a lot of games.
00:41:38they had in the fight Chandler's getting a little chance after that hit from Jeff
00:41:42Cote to relax and regroup and sort of make sure all the body parts are in the
00:41:48right places because he's taken some good shots from Jeff Cote and several
00:41:52members of that defensive line. Was Proll pushed out of bounds and came back in?
00:41:58Let's find out. We have the eligible receiver forced out of bounds on the
00:42:04play. He was interfered with while he was forced out. Came back in. Touched the
00:42:12pass for illegal touching. The penalties were offset. Still second down.
00:42:20You gotta be kidding me. That says it all. That's the old Rosanna, Rosanna, Dana.
00:42:28Never mind. Out of bounds. Interference. Comes back in. By the way, that didn't
00:42:38happen. We're gonna just sort of do it all over again. That 37-yard gain that you
00:42:44just saw was just a dream. Kind of a nightmare for Joe Bugle. It's been a
00:42:51nightmare season. He has not gotten a break. You talk about a team that's had
00:42:56injuries, that's had mistakes, that's had big plays against them. This is the old
00:43:00message. Second down and seven.
00:43:04Counter with Johnny Bailey and a quick burst to the 40. However, they're three
00:43:10yards shy of the first down. Tony Casillas. Tackle them at the 40.
00:43:16Tony Casillas, number 75, and a hard-to-deny barracks. Johnny Bailey comes in and gives his team a lift.
00:43:25Third and down situations quite often, so he's in there in a split-back field.
00:43:32Third down and three. The card goes quickly to the line of scrimmage.
00:43:40An audible between the receivers and Chandler.
00:43:44Wharton threatening the Blitz.
00:43:52The left side of Sharp and May were drawn off by the defense there. There
00:43:56were about five seconds left on the clock. They got a little nervous and
00:43:59started backing up. The question is, were they drawn?
00:44:05Number 67 offense, prior to the snap, false start. The defense was in the neutral zone, and the defense has been warned.
00:44:15Well, they got a warning, but the Cardinals get to look at third and eight now. Bad boy. Don't do that. You've been warned.
00:44:23Yeah, I'm sure that's going to slow down the defensive line. They can go in the
00:44:29neutral zone any time they want, as long as the ball's not snapped.
00:44:42Third down and eight. Demerits. Oh, okay. You lose your license.
00:44:51Chandler, bat it down. That was Leon Lett.
00:45:00And there's a relieved Dallas Cowboy. Leon Lett back in action.
00:45:07And here's the product of having a nice, tall defensive lineman. Leon Lett, definitely the tallest defensive tackle Dallas has.
00:45:16Russell Maryland and Tony Casillas, not very altitude-oriented defensive linemen, but Lett and Hennings are big, tall targets.
00:45:26Camarillo, Williams will set the Cowboys up at the 13. 32 yards, punt inside of the 20-yard line.
00:45:38So the Cardinals drove it for a while, but come up empty. Dallas, 10-0 second quarter.
00:45:45Next week, we'll have golf action. The Franklin Funds Shark Shootout, both Saturday and Sunday.
00:45:51The tournament hosted by Greg Norman, the likes of Paul Azinger, Arnold Palmer, Nick Price, Davis Love III.
00:45:58Star-studded field. Hope you'll join us. Looking forward to that next week.
00:46:05Kosar play action. Deep ball, man open.
00:46:11Pundered through, Michael Irvin.
00:46:16There's a case of Kosar needing to throw a 55-60 yard ball in the air and threw it about 53.
00:46:24And right here is a guy that can throw it 70 yards in the air.
00:46:29That's the best arm going right now, and Troy with that hamstring.
00:46:33I would be very surprised if you saw him before Thanksgiving Day when the Cowboys play the Dolphins.
00:46:39More realistically, I think Troy Aikman plays against Philadelphia the week after that.
00:46:43They've got to let that hamstring sit.
00:46:46Second and ten. Nothing for Smith.
00:46:49Bankston got him low, and Keith Rucker got him high.
00:46:53Rucker had a tender ankle coming into this game, but makes a good effort on that play.
00:46:58Rucker was injured in practice on Wednesday, and Joe Bugle referred to it as more scared than hurt.
00:47:04He got his leg rolled over pretty good.
00:47:06Browns are on the board with a safety.
00:47:097-2 Seattle, though.
00:47:13In the bottom of the second.
00:47:16Second quarter in that one.
00:47:23There are Bernie signs, welcoming signs, scattered throughout Texas State.
00:47:29Third down and 12.
00:47:31Kosar, complete.
00:47:32Smith.
00:47:34Makes the move for the first down, and look out!
00:47:37Aneas Williams pushes down an official to try to get to him.
00:47:41Williams with a block downfield, but Aneas drags him down at the 1.
00:47:50Wait till you see this replay.
00:47:5686 yards.
00:48:0086 yards.
00:48:08Aneas Williams had to fight for two screens, one from the back judge,
00:48:13and then a great block downfield by rookie Kevin Williams.
00:48:16And you see why you don't blitz a veteran like Bernie Kosar?
00:48:19He's new to the system. Doesn't matter.
00:48:22Watch here. Right there.
00:48:24Speed bump. It's a striped speed bump.
00:48:27Aneas Williams fighting, fighting.
00:48:30Great effort by Aneas Williams, but wonderful execution by Bernie Kosar.
00:48:35One more time.
00:48:37There's Aneas Williams taking down the impediment,
00:48:40and Williams out there blocking.
00:48:42But he won't get that Williams, and Williams down.
00:48:45Smith short of the end zone.
00:48:47Timeout Cowboys. First and goal at the 2.
00:48:54Great effort by everyone involved, but watch something.
00:48:56Here's Chuck Cecil. Pro Bowl safety.
00:48:59Bad shoulder. Can't follow through on the tackle.
00:49:03Doesn't wrap him up, and injuries come back to haunt you
00:49:06in more ways than guys not being on the field.
00:49:10First and goal.
00:49:12And Smith, did he get in?
00:49:18Well, I guess not.
00:49:21Second and goal. Lynch is shy of the plane.
00:49:24Keith Rucker stopped the gap that time.
00:49:27Closed the gap.
00:49:29Chuck Cecil had him short of the first down,
00:49:32but we saw Cecil on the way in today.
00:49:34He says, I've never had an injury like this in my career.
00:49:37Obviously, having a hard time being able to put a wrap on somebody
00:49:40with that stinger in his neck and shoulder.
00:49:42No mystery here for Dallas, Jim.
00:49:44They've established a pattern.
00:49:46You run behind the big guys on the right side.
00:49:49Smith again.
00:49:51Smith stacked up high by Lorenzo Lynch,
00:49:54and he did not get in.
00:49:57And that was behind the big guys on the right side,
00:50:00and a great job by the Phoenix defense.
00:50:03And Lorenzo Lynch does his imitation of a flying linebacker
00:50:07see him in motion, going with Novacek.
00:50:10Watch where he comes out right there.
00:50:12That is using every single gram of the weight in your body.
00:50:17Just stop a guy, because Lorenzo Lynch at 200 pounds
00:50:20will never be mistaken for a quarterback.
00:50:23Third and goal.
00:50:26Fake to Smith.
00:50:28Roll out Kosar.
00:50:30Zips it.
00:50:31Touchdown, Dallas.
00:50:33J. Novacek.
00:50:35Bernie was flattened after he threw it.
00:50:45Well, that play there goes to show you,
00:50:47if you've got eroding skills and you can't move around
00:50:51in the right kind of offense,
00:50:53you don't have to move around that much.
00:50:56How much more does Bernie have to move than this?
00:50:59Look at the protection.
00:51:01How much more does Bernie have to move than this?
00:51:03Look at the protection he's getting.
00:51:05The defense doesn't get him until late.
00:51:10Novacek on the hold now for Murray.
00:51:16Novacek's first touchdown catch of the season.
00:51:20Novacek had scored on a fake field goal
00:51:23against the Indianapolis Colts.
00:51:26So Kosar's driven them to two touchdowns.
00:51:29He has his first touchdown pass in a Cowboy uniform.
00:51:3217-0.
00:51:37Cowboys with a 17-0 lead.
00:51:40Two touchdowns here in the second quarter.
00:51:43Emmitt Smith on a run from four yards
00:51:46and then a Smith 86-yard catch and run.
00:51:51The fifth longest reception in Cowboy history
00:51:54to set up the Kosar touchdown toss to J. Novacek.
00:52:00You saw Johnny Bailey, dangerous kick returner.
00:52:04Cardinals need something, a jolt to get them going.
00:52:14And Bailey gets it out to the 26.
00:52:20You'll see an example of a great job by a receiver
00:52:24staying with his quarterback on this touchdown by Dallas.
00:52:27Watch J. Novacek come around.
00:52:29He'll go out of view and then he'll come back into view
00:52:32in the back of the end zone.
00:52:34Bernie goes. Nothing is open. Nothing is open.
00:52:38Now watch Novacek reappear.
00:52:41I tell you, Jim, the city of Cleveland was wrongly
00:52:44carrying a name with that, the mistake on the lake
00:52:46for years and years, but I think you can refer to this trade
00:52:49or this cutting by Bernie Kosar
00:52:52as kind of like the mistake by the Browns on the lake.
00:52:54That was a terrible decision.
00:52:57Ron Moore for a loss on the play.
00:53:00That makes no sense at all.
00:53:03And you know there are a lot of Cleveland Brown fans
00:53:08who are Bernie Kosar fans rejoicing right now
00:53:11watching this performance by their hometown hero.
00:53:15Well, the Browns are a team that have decided
00:53:18to go to a very conservative offense,
00:53:20and Bernie Kosar is a quarterback who made it very, very plain.
00:53:23He's a guy that likes to go to audibles,
00:53:25likes to take advantage of gambles by the defense,
00:53:28and you saw him burn the Cardinals on a gamble there
00:53:30with that pass to Smith to get him down to the goal line.
00:53:33Draw one sign.
00:53:34Fan team down from Ohio for this game,
00:53:36second down and 12,
00:53:38and not enough zip on that one going for Gary Clark.
00:53:43So third and long, the Cardinals' offense
00:53:47not staying on the field for very long.
00:53:49Chandler only four out of 12 in the first half.
00:53:57And this brings a possibility for the Dallas defense
00:54:00and their coordinator, Butch Davis.
00:54:02They can practically do anything against this offense
00:54:05in third and long like this.
00:54:07You can bring three linemen, you can bring four linemen,
00:54:10you can blitz, or you just drop and drop
00:54:12and look for the pick.
00:54:13Third down, third down and 12.
00:54:20Going for Clark.
00:54:22Doubled up and knocked away.
00:54:25Kevin Smith.
00:54:29Felt batted away.
00:54:31Cardinals will be forced to punt once again.
00:54:33What?
00:54:34Two first downs in the first half.
00:54:36Give them three.
00:54:37Three first downs for the Cardinals.
00:54:39It was a good job by Chandler in the offensive line
00:54:42of getting the blitz, getting the blocking,
00:54:44getting the ball out there,
00:54:46but an equally good job by the defense.
00:54:48An equally good job by the defensive coverage
00:54:50of the Cowboys.
00:54:52For the fourth time today, three times
00:54:55for three downs and out.
00:55:00And that boot goes out of bounds.
00:55:02Kevin Williams will show them where the spot is.
00:55:11Derek Ware with a disagreement, but let's not
00:55:13lose sight of the spot as the officials
00:55:17are still trying to figure out where that one went out.
00:55:21There he is back there at the 42.
00:55:23They've made up their mind.
00:55:27Join CBS Sports next Sunday, 1230 Eastern.
00:55:30More NFL action.
00:55:32Some will see the Bears in Kansas City
00:55:34take on the Chiefs, while others will watch
00:55:36Dallas at Atlanta, the Giants in Philadelphia,
00:55:39or Washington at the Rams.
00:55:41You'll have to check your local listings
00:55:42for the game being shown in your area.
00:55:44It all begins with the NFL today.
00:55:46All you need to know on the NFL today,
00:55:481230 Eastern time here on CBS.
00:55:51And Jim, if the plan was to blitz
00:55:53and get after Kosar, you better go to plan B.
00:55:57Kosar.
00:55:59Fires.
00:56:01Gets his man.
00:56:02It's Alvin Harper now gets into the loop.
00:56:05Alvin Harper leads the NFL
00:56:07an average yardage per catch
00:56:10and average yards per pass.
00:56:12One pass for 46 yards last week.
00:56:15He's 25 yards a clip on receptions, Randy.
00:56:18And he's a receiver, Jim, that can do it
00:56:21because he's got a guy on the other side
00:56:23that absolutely terrifies defenses.
00:56:26Michael Irvin makes Alvin Harper's job a lot easier.
00:56:31There he is, Alvin Harper.
00:56:3225 yards a reception for a touchdown.
00:56:36By the way, Emmitt Smith getting a rest.
00:56:38Derrick Lassig in on second and one.
00:56:40They go to loose.
00:56:42Daryl Johnston
00:56:44rumbles to the 44, maybe the 45 of Phoenix.
00:56:54Emmitt Smith, the point was made last week
00:56:56about Emmitt Smith possibly being
00:56:58a little dinged up in the shoulder,
00:57:00specifically the right shoulder of Emmitt Smith.
00:57:02He's getting a little rest right now,
00:57:04but this is not a commodity
00:57:06when you've got an Aikman out too
00:57:08that you want to take any chances with.
00:57:12Talking with the team, Dr. Smith with 16 carries,
00:57:1553 yards and a touchdown.
00:57:18It's second and 10.
00:57:20Johnston lined up as a tight end.
00:57:23And they bust him up as Johnston's the receiver
00:57:26down to the 27.
00:57:29Johnston lining up on the right side as a tight end.
00:57:33And Johnston is a receiver
00:57:35that's had big games against Phoenix.
00:57:37He makes the point that the Phoenix defense
00:57:39likes to run off with the receivers of Dallas
00:57:41and when they do that, it opens it up for me.
00:57:44Look at 48, right in the middle,
00:57:46he's just the checkoff receiver.
00:57:48When things aren't out there outside,
00:57:50Bernie has the safety valve to go to inside.
00:57:53Kosar, 7 out of 8
00:57:56for 152 yards and a touchdown.
00:58:00First down, Dallas.
00:58:03Lassing.
00:58:07Maybe back to the line of scrimmage.
00:58:09Wow.
00:58:11He won't go down easy, will he?
00:58:14Chris Oldham and several others make contact on him.
00:58:18These are running backs who take advantage
00:58:20of his opportunities, Jim.
00:58:21I mean, he hasn't had a chance to do much
00:58:23and he can look over on the sidelines
00:58:25and he can see Emmitt Smith there.
00:58:26And let me tell you something, folks,
00:58:28you see that hat on his head?
00:58:29That's not to keep his head warm.
00:58:31When players put on hats on the sideline,
00:58:33it's not because they're planning on going right back in.
00:58:36It looks like Emmitt Smith is planning on a prolonged stay.
00:58:43Second and 11.
00:58:50Mishandle on the snap and they turn it over.
00:58:54Cardinals recover.
00:58:55Jimmy Johnson's biggest worry coming into this game
00:58:59was the coordination of Bernie with his offense
00:59:01and specifically the coordination with his center,
00:59:04Mark Stepnoski.
00:59:05Bankston fell on it.
00:59:08And Phoenix will take over with 3-0-3
00:59:11remaining in the second quarter.
00:59:13Cardinals do have all of their timeouts remaining.
00:59:16Maybe that's the break they needed
00:59:18because the Cowboys were looking for the first half kill.
00:59:22And watch the ball when it hits the ground.
00:59:24This is a case of a quarterback having an unfamiliar snap count,
00:59:28a center like Stepnoski who loves to beat the count.
00:59:32He's a guy that's going to jam that ball up there fast
00:59:34and they just have not worked enough together.
00:59:37There he centers his solo back.
00:59:41Chandler almost picked off by Darren Smith.
00:59:47We are told now from the Dallas Cowboys
00:59:50that Emmitt Smith has an upset stomach.
00:59:54And apparently his stomach got a little upset
00:59:59after that 86-yard dash.
01:00:01And he may return to this game.
01:00:03He was sick when we visited with him yesterday.
01:00:05Well, I get pretty much an upset stomach
01:00:08and get sick when I run 80 yards at a time too,
01:00:10so I can understand that.
01:00:11If I remember right, I think it's about 20 yards for you
01:00:13when you get an upset stomach.
01:00:14No, that's oxygen after 20.
01:00:16Not a pretty sight either.
01:00:19And Emmitt's fighting off what he says is a bad cold.
01:00:23Second down and 10.
01:00:25Tolbert tried to wrestle centers
01:00:27and Smith comes up to finish him off with Jim Jeffcoat.
01:00:31Tolbert didn't want any part of Larry Centers.
01:00:33He wanted the ball Larry Centers was holding.
01:00:37And that's the only reason he doesn't get the tackle
01:00:39because he's trying to grab the football.
01:00:42Here's Tolbert, 92, fights through the block.
01:00:44Look at him.
01:00:45He's got nothing but football
01:00:47and Centers just holds on to the ball and keeps spinning.
01:00:50But when you get to be a defense that's this aggressive this fast
01:00:53and to be perfectly honest with you,
01:00:55this confident and cocky, you start taking chances
01:00:58and that comes under the category of taking a chance.
01:01:00Approaching the two-minute warning in the second quarter.
01:01:03Third and 14.
01:01:09Got to make a move to get the first.
01:01:13That won't do you any good.
01:01:14Randall Hill met by Kevin Smith.
01:01:19Randall Hill who played in college for Jimmy Johnson.
01:01:24So the Cardinals for the fifth time in this half.
01:01:28Three downs and a punt.
01:01:31And we've reached the two-minute warning.
01:01:35You know, I think, Jim, in college you can make a move
01:01:37and make up 10 yards on a pass like that.
01:01:39In the pros, you lower your head, you take the yards you can get
01:01:43because everybody's fast and nobody goes for moves.
01:01:4617-0, Dallas.
01:01:48Two-minute warning.
01:01:53Coming up at halftime, back to our NFL Today studios,
01:01:56Greg and Terry with all the scores and highlights.
01:02:00And like you heard Terry say on NFL Today earlier,
01:02:04if Dallas gets in a two-minute situation,
01:02:06look for Jason Garrett to come into the game
01:02:08and when they get the ball back here,
01:02:10Jason Garrett will be back in at quarterback.
01:02:12Jason Garrett was warming up on the sidelines,
01:02:15so getting loose again, he played the first two series
01:02:18and led the Cowboys to a field goal,
01:02:21in fact, on their first drive of the game.
01:02:23He was one for three passing.
01:02:27And Kosar has taken over from that point,
01:02:31but now Garrett will return.
01:02:32That's exactly what Jimmy Johnson told us would be the case today
01:02:36when one quarterback comes out of the game
01:02:39that does not necessarily mean he will not return.
01:02:44Cowboys coming in on Camarillo, gets it away.
01:02:47He is a solid punter.
01:02:48Long-lasting one in this league.
01:02:50But here comes Kevin Williams.
01:02:53And Williams takes it out.
01:02:55Maybe a late hit, yes.
01:02:58That is a stupid play by Larry Senner.
01:03:01Clearly out of bounds.
01:03:03I mean, don't look around like,
01:03:05gee, what did I do, Larry?
01:03:08I mean, they've got white paint on the sidelines
01:03:11and they have yellow lines on the sidelines
01:03:13and he was into the yellow lines before he hit them
01:03:15and Bugle's got to be telling him,
01:03:16what were you thinking?
01:03:17Yeah, that's going to bring the football for Dallas near the 50
01:03:21when they step off 15 yards.
01:03:23Personal foul, number 37.
01:03:25Late hit, out of bounds.
01:03:27We'll add 15 yards to the end of the run.
01:03:30First down.
01:03:36Went for the head and everything.
01:03:37Went for the head, but he was going for the head when he's...
01:03:42Already out of bounds.
01:03:43I think that's out in the Canadian Football League.
01:03:48Jason Garrett.
01:03:52Penalties today, well,
01:03:54seems like we've had more whistles than that, doesn't it?
01:03:57Well, we've had six conferences to go along with the six penalties,
01:04:01so it just seems like...
01:04:05Cowboys will start from their own 47.
01:04:12And this completely changes what Norv Turner and Jimmy Johnson
01:04:16can do offensively for the Cowboys.
01:04:18If they had an ink when you line up in the big bend
01:04:20and you bomb the thing down the field,
01:04:22Troy could throw it into the end zone,
01:04:24but Garrett's in the game here.
01:04:26They want to throw deep over the middle, around the 25.
01:04:29Emmitt Smith is back in also.
01:04:33And out of the backfield, Smith cannot find the handle.
01:04:36Braxton on the coverage.
01:04:401.43 remaining.
01:04:41Remember, Dallas has burned two timeouts,
01:04:44their left was one.
01:04:46Some of the early finals,
01:04:48and we'll be showing you highlights of some of these games.
01:04:52Green Bay Packers win on a last-second field goal.
01:04:55The Giants sweep the series for the year against the Redskins.
01:04:58The Oilers are on a roll now.
01:05:00They've won four straight.
01:05:02Shuler gets the record, 325.
01:05:04And Jerry Rice had four touchdown catches for the 49ers.
01:05:09Second and ten.
01:05:12Garrett stands in there.
01:05:13Fires it to Williams,
01:05:15who stops the clock going out of bounds at the 45.
01:05:19Last week, Jimmy Johnson and the Cowboys
01:05:21attempted a 54-yard field goal with Eddie Murray.
01:05:24That was just short, so keep in mind,
01:05:27you've got to be looking at getting the ball
01:05:29to probably the Cardinal 32, 33-yard line
01:05:32to get into the proverbial outer limits of Eddie Murray's range.
01:05:36Remember, Charles Haley liked the fact
01:05:38that Jimmy Johnson tried that field goal,
01:05:40and all the trickery and things that he's pulled off this year.
01:05:44He said, that showed me some real guts.
01:05:47He liked that one.
01:05:48That's exactly what he said.
01:05:50Third down and two.
01:05:52And play whistled dead.
01:05:54Harvey may have jumped.
01:05:57You know, that's one thing Jimmy Johnson does,
01:05:59a lot like my former coach when I was with San Francisco,
01:06:02Bill Walsh, in that he doesn't hesitate to call a reverse,
01:06:05to call a halfback pass, to fake a punt, fake a kick,
01:06:09to do things like that that just, you know,
01:06:11it lets his players know, guys like Charles Haley,
01:06:14that, you know, I'm in the game, I'm behind you.
01:06:16I'm willing to do what it takes.
01:06:17Five yards, still third down.
01:06:19All right, that's against Williams, Kevin Williams of the Cowboys.
01:06:27So it'll be third and seven.
01:06:33Did you get involved in any of those trick plays back in high school
01:06:36your coach used to put in, you said?
01:06:38All I used to do was snap it on occasion when I was playing center
01:06:41and hope it worked when I was playing guard.
01:06:43No fumble rooskie or anything like that, huh?
01:06:45No.
01:06:46Please set the game clock to 137.
01:06:49The only play they put in for me was falling on the ball,
01:06:51not running with it.
01:06:55So they add two seconds to the game clock.
01:07:00Third and seven.
01:07:02This ball has to be thrown down by the 35 and run for the extra yards
01:07:06to get into the right of the yardage.
01:07:08Brady Murray.
01:07:12Niasse Williams took a diving stab at a pass interception.
01:07:17Diving stab at a dying duck.
01:07:19Yep.
01:07:20That ball was not thrown very well by Garrett.
01:07:23All you can say for that possession by the Dallas Cowboys is it didn't hurt him.
01:07:30That baseball game between Seattle and Cleveland continues.
01:07:34Seattle leading 7-5.
01:07:36Bell hit another home run, so Cleveland's up to five runs now.
01:07:40Anthony Edwards as the Cowboys for the first time today
01:07:44fail to pick up a first down on a series.
01:07:48Edwards.
01:07:51Wraps it at the 17.
01:07:52125 to go in the half.
01:07:5632-yard punt.
01:07:5917-0 Cowboys,
01:08:02and the Cardinals will have all three timeouts to work with.
01:08:07Certainly use a shot of confidence here going into the locker room at halftime.
01:08:12Offense has been nonexistent so far.
01:08:15Not to take the pessimistic low road,
01:08:17but the most important thing for the Cardinals to do here is not do anything fast.
01:08:21This has got great potential for turnover when you try to make things happen.
01:08:29Clark.
01:08:31For eight yards.
01:08:37Been kind of a frustrating year for Gary Clark.
01:08:40With a groin injury, they tried to come back on and off since that opener against Philadelphia,
01:08:46and finally they just sat Gary Clark down.
01:08:48He got his first touchdown catch last year as a Phoenix Cardinal,
01:08:53and it's opened up doors for Ricky Cole,
01:08:56but it's been an extremely frustrating year for Gary Clark.
01:08:59His touchdown last week against the Eagles,
01:09:01the only touchdown for the Cardinals in their victory,
01:09:03and for the second time Leon Lett gets a hand on it to bat it down.
01:09:12You always associate batting down passes with being hit with the hands and the fingers and whatnot,
01:09:17but I think Leon Lett batted that down with his triceps on the back of his arm there.
01:09:23Yeah, the ball was just drilled into his arms.
01:09:261.16 to go, third and short.
01:09:29Johnny Bailey stepping around some defenders to pick up the first.
01:09:36And a timeout called.
01:09:40Cardinals with a first down, 1.10 to go, first half.
01:09:48Cowboys leading 17-0.
01:09:50Johnny Bailey has picked up the first down for the Cardinals,
01:09:52who have two timeouts now to work with.
01:09:57Good piece of running on that play by Bailey.
01:10:01First down from the 35.
01:10:03In his deep zone defense, he'll give him the short one.
01:10:06Lett coming in on Chandler.
01:10:08Centers, shakes one tackle.
01:10:11Centers out to the 46, first down.
01:10:16Everett dragged him down after an 11-yard gain.
01:10:21And this style of defense is going to get deep.
01:10:24They'll keep everything in front of them.
01:10:26It gets tougher to beat the closer you get to the end zone.
01:10:33Charles Haley jumped about five yards too early.
01:10:42False start, number 64 offense.
01:10:44Prior to the snap, five yards, still first down.
01:10:49He was drawn off by Rick Cunningham.
01:10:53A right tackle for Joe Bugle.
01:10:59First and 15.
01:11:05And what a tackle by Kenneth Gant.
01:11:08That was Johnny Bailey on the reception.
01:11:12Only out to the 44.
01:11:1430 seconds to go.
01:11:16Two timeouts.
01:11:20Second and 12.
01:11:23Trying to get out of bounds.
01:11:25They give it to him.
01:11:27They say he was stopped in play.
01:11:30There's the timeout called by Phoenix.
01:11:3218 seconds to go.
01:11:34Randall Hill's reception moves him into Dallas territory.
01:11:37Timeout Phoenix.
01:11:41All right, let's talk strategy here.
01:11:4318 seconds to go.
01:11:45Cardinals have it.
01:11:46First down at the Dallas 45 with one timeout.
01:11:49Davis is a very strong leg kicker.
01:11:51If you're thinking field goal, you've got to get the ball down to about the 35-yard line
01:11:56to go for a 52-53 yard.
01:11:59It is third down, by the way, and Clark dropped the football.
01:12:03Trying to get out of bounds.
01:12:05Recovered by Ken Norton.
01:12:08That'll put an end to the Cardinal threat.
01:12:12Their first turnover.
01:12:14The recovery by Norton with 11 seconds to go in the half.
01:12:18We mentioned when you're trying to make something happen
01:12:21and you're giving that extra effort,
01:12:23extra effort is good,
01:12:25but extra effort sometimes can be mismatched
01:12:29against lack of concentration
01:12:31and just a case of not holding onto the ball.
01:12:34It's lack of concentration and just a case of not holding onto the ball by Gary Clark,
01:12:38and Phoenix once again gets out the six-shooter
01:12:41and puts a few rounds through their foot.
01:12:51Well, it doesn't appear Dallas will try anything fancy.
01:12:58Not when you have one guy lined up 20 yards behind a line of scrimmage.
01:13:02So Garrett falls to one knee.
01:13:05Kosar and the Cowboys head to the locker room.
01:13:08Jimmy Johnson says, you led us to two touchdown drives.
01:13:1217-0 Cowboys at the end of the first half.
01:13:16Dallas 17, Phoenix nothing.
