00:00:50Since the Phoenix Cardinals
00:00:52moved to the Valley of the Sun, they've had only
00:00:54three sellout games. But tonight
00:00:56they'll have a record crowd, as over
00:00:5873,000 will be on hand.
00:01:00The game being billed as the biggest
00:01:02contest in their six-year history
00:01:04in Phoenix. The Cards
00:01:06hoping to establish some credibility with a win
00:01:08as they play host to the defending
00:01:10world champion
00:01:12Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys trying to
00:01:14make it six in a row over the
00:01:16Phoenix Cardinals. Hi everybody, I'm
00:01:18Gary Bender. The Super Bowl champion
00:01:20Cowboys at 0-2 were a very
00:01:22disturbed team. They got a
00:01:24big emotional lift this Thursday when
00:01:26Kevin Smith gave up his
00:01:2863-day holdout to become the
00:01:30highest-paid running back in the National
00:01:32Football League. And this Cowboy team
00:01:34is ecstatic about his return.
00:01:36And now, Pat Hayden, with number
00:01:3822 back in the fold, there's no
00:01:40more distractions, no more excuses
00:01:42for not winning football games. Well, Gary, when you
00:01:44think about it, these really should be the best of
00:01:46times for the Dallas Cowboys. Coming off a
00:01:48Super Bowl win, a very young
00:01:50football team. They weren't ravaged by free
00:01:52agency, but it has been a tumultuous
00:01:54start of the season for them. But as you
00:01:56mentioned, Emmitt Smith is back. Now,
00:01:58he won't start tonight, Jimmy Johnson told
00:02:00us. But it's funny, as we get closer to the
00:02:02game, Jimmy Johnson is kind of hedging
00:02:04his bets about playing him more and more.
00:02:06Yesterday he said to us, hey, I'm
00:02:08really worried about getting him injured. I'd
00:02:10like not to play him at all because we have a
00:02:12bye next week. But he said, I may insert
00:02:14him late in the second quarter and then
00:02:16in the second half. But regardless of the
00:02:18fact that whether he's here or not, the real reason
00:02:20the Cowboys are 0-2 is turnovers.
00:02:22They have had eight turnovers this year,
00:02:24including six fumbles. They only had nine
00:02:26all of last year, and with or without
00:02:28Emmitt Smith, you can't turn the ball over that much.
00:02:30Well, Pat, I tell you, in the first two weeks, the
00:02:32Cowboys' special teams haven't been special. They
00:02:34have scored zero points. At this time a year
00:02:36ago, they had registered 16.
00:02:38Well, you know, if you're a Super Bowl team, you've got to be able to win
00:02:40on special teams, and they did, particularly early
00:02:42last season for the Cowboys.
00:02:44Got off to a great start in their first two games
00:02:46when they began to block punts, and you're going
00:02:48to see here a couple of block punts early
00:02:50in the year for the Cowboys. Now,
00:02:52the special teams provided
00:02:5416 points. This is the block
00:02:56against the Giants for a touchdown,
00:02:58and then later against the Redskins,
00:03:00a block punt by Isaac Holt led
00:03:02to a safety. And then a man that
00:03:04hasn't been talked much about
00:03:06is missing from this team, and that is
00:03:08Kelvin Martin. This is the guy that
00:03:10went up to Seattle, but returned
00:03:12two punts last year for touchdowns.
00:03:14Now, you see what's happened.
00:03:1616 points a year ago, none this year,
00:03:18and the two fumbled punts, they do miss
00:03:20Kelvin Martin. Yeah, and both those inside
00:03:22the 30-yard line. Well, the Cardinals have suffered
00:03:24through back-to-back 4 and 12
00:03:26seasons, but they signed
00:03:28seven free agents. They had a brilliant
00:03:30draft, and now they think they're ready to
00:03:32step forward in a big way to prove
00:03:34they're a good football team. Well, that's just what
00:03:36Gary Clark, one of those free agents, said to us yesterday.
00:03:38We have to prove we're a good football team,
00:03:40and it really started with a draft. They had the
00:03:42third pick of the draft, and they drafted Garrison Hurst
00:03:44in that position. Now, the
00:03:46Cardinals are hoping that Garrison Hurst
00:03:48can provide the same kind of
00:03:50spark that Emmitt Smith did early on
00:03:52when he was a rookie with the Cowboys.
00:03:54In the first game, he gained three yards.
00:03:56Second game, he gained 76 yards,
00:03:58and they're going to feature him tonight.
00:04:00Joe Bugle says, we're going to spoon-feed
00:04:02him to the Cowboys.
00:04:04Now, the other part of this new look, Cardinals,
00:04:06is the free agents. See the Fab Four.
00:04:08Steve Berline will start at quarterback.
00:04:10Cecil, Booty, and Clark, they all come
00:04:12from winning programs, and what they have provided
00:04:14is confidence and an attitude,
00:04:16and that is desperately what this Cardinal team needs.
00:04:18Well, Jimmy Johnson
00:04:20smiling a little bit yesterday
00:04:22at our meetings because number 22,
00:04:24Emmitt Smith, is back into the fold.
00:04:26Jimmy Johnson expecting a very
00:04:28physical football game. Last year, his team
00:04:30winning here 16-10,
00:04:32and Joe Bugle, well, he has been
00:04:34given an edict that he must win
00:04:36nine games or he will not
00:04:38keep his job. So they got off
00:04:40on very shaky footing,
00:04:42losing to the Eagles and then beat the Skins,
00:04:44the biggest win for Joe Bugle
00:04:46since he's been the head coach.
00:04:48Temperature, 93 degrees. It will
00:04:50cool considerably now as the wind
00:04:52is really not a factor,
00:04:54and the sun starts to set
00:04:56behind the stands on the west side
00:04:58as Greg Davis
00:05:00will get ready to kick off.
00:05:02The Cowboys have won the toss.
00:05:04They have elected to receive a very
00:05:06unusual kickoff formation
00:05:08by Phoenix. Yeah, they're in a position for an
00:05:10inside kick as well as coverage. It is unusual.
00:05:12They'll spread out and kick it.
00:05:14Calvin Williams and Brock Miriam,
00:05:16both rookies, are back deep for Dallas.
00:05:18There'll be no return here.
00:05:20And so Troy
00:05:22Aikman, the Super Bowl MVP,
00:05:24will come out to run the team at quarterback.
00:05:26He's one of the game's elite.
00:05:28Last week, against the Bills,
00:05:30he attempted a career-high 45
00:05:32passes. He's had to carry
00:05:34more of a load because of Emmitt being out of
00:05:36there. Great poise,
00:05:38quick release, and so accurate
00:05:40with his throws. He'll start from the 20
00:05:42as we began here at Sun Devil Stadium.
00:05:54Eric Lasek, the rookie from Alabama.
00:05:56Darryl Johnston in the backfield.
00:06:00Play action by Aikman to
00:06:02throw on the first play of the game.
00:06:04He has a first down
00:06:06up to the 37. Make that Alvin Harper.
00:06:08Harper coming up to the catch.
00:06:10A 17-yard gain on the play.
00:06:12Let's look offensively now
00:06:14at the Dallas Cowboys. We mentioned
00:06:16Aikman. Lasek is a guy who's
00:06:18probably as happy as anyone that
00:06:20Emmitt Smith is back.
00:06:22We have a man shaken up, by the way, for the Cardinals
00:06:24and Aeneas Williams. 2A coming off
00:06:26of his best year.
00:06:28Newton and Stepnowski to the Pro Bowl
00:06:30last year for the Dallas Cowboys.
00:06:32But Aeneas Williams, who
00:06:34figures so big in this game because he's
00:06:36their best cover guy, is down.
00:06:38Not only that, Gary. That's a critical injury
00:06:40because Lorenzo Lynch, their other
00:06:42starting corner, is not starting tonight
00:06:44because of a pulled groin.
00:06:46Right now, both starting
00:06:48corners for the Cardinals
00:06:50are injured.
00:06:52Dexter Davis starting in place
00:06:54of this guy, Lorenzo Lynch.
00:06:56We're going to go back now and pick up the injury
00:06:58to Aeneas Williams.
00:07:00When you play against the Cardinals, they play a lot of zone.
00:07:02And when the ball arrives to the receiver,
00:07:04there's going to be a lot of bodies around the ball.
00:07:06And sometimes you can hit your own players.
00:07:08And that's what happened right there. Aeneas Williams
00:07:10got hit by one of his own players,
00:07:12Stowe, number 90, the middle linebacker.
00:07:14Williams off.
00:07:16Chris Oldham comes in to replace him.
00:07:18So it's a first down catch by
00:07:20Harper for 17 yards out to the
00:07:2237.
00:07:28Comes in motion. Lastic with the
00:07:30ball to the 40. Trying to get outside.
00:07:32He'll be dropped at the 41.
00:07:34Oldham, who just checked in, comes up to make the
00:07:36stop. The Cardinals defensively
00:07:38go to a big nickel package,
00:07:40which basically is a 4-2-5.
00:07:42And they will alternate
00:07:44a lot of people. Watch number 98.
00:07:46Eric Swann is soon going to be
00:07:48in the Pro Bowl. Ken Harvey
00:07:50had three sacks a week ago.
00:07:52Now the secondary, already having some problems.
00:07:54Williams out of there. And as Pat mentioned,
00:07:56Dexter Davis getting the starting call.
00:08:00Second and five.
00:08:06Play action again by Aikman. He's got a lot of
00:08:08time, and he's on target.
00:08:10Michael Irvin steps out of bounds with a
00:08:12first down at the 42-yard line
00:08:14of Phoenix. Gary, this is the type
00:08:16of game that Troy Aikman is
00:08:18going to complete a lot of passes.
00:08:20I mean, even if them
00:08:22and Smith were in the game, they'd be throwing the ball
00:08:24off. They play a soft zone,
00:08:26and they try to keep everything in front of them.
00:08:28But I expect to see Novacek catch a bunch
00:08:30of balls. You're going to see Darryl Johnston,
00:08:32the fullback, catch a bunch of balls.
00:08:34And he's gone twice to Harper now, and once
00:08:36to Michael Irvin. Two 17-yard
00:08:38completions to Harper, and
00:08:40now to Michael Irvin.
00:08:44Okay, Novacek, the tight end
00:08:46in motion. Hand off, straight ahead
00:08:48comes Lassik. Lassik inside
00:08:50the 35 to the 34-yard
00:08:52line. Tyrone Stowe
00:08:54made the stop there.
00:08:58They came out and tried
00:09:00to trap Eric Swann. He's number 98
00:09:02here who's going to come in. The guard's going to come around
00:09:04and trap him.
00:09:06It's one of the things you want to do with a guy who gets
00:09:08off the ball as quickly as
00:09:10Eric Swann has done the
00:09:12first two games of the season. So they come out and trap him,
00:09:14they've thrown the ball to both wide receivers,
00:09:16and they've run a couple of plays. A nice opening
00:09:18drive here for the Cowboys. Second and
00:09:20three now from the 34 at Phoenix.
00:09:22Delayed handoff
00:09:24to Lassik. He's got the first down,
00:09:26and he's going to be stopped then at the 28-yard
00:09:28line. Chris Oldham up
00:09:30to make the stop. I'll tell you, Lassik has played
00:09:32pretty doggone well when you figure
00:09:34that he has had so much pressure on him
00:09:36due to the absence of Emmitt Smith.
00:09:38He's now carried the ball three times for 18 yards,
00:09:40and that'll be another first down.
00:09:42He is a good runner. He is a good
00:09:44runner, is Lassik. But when
00:09:46you make a mistake on him,
00:09:48he doesn't score a touchdown.
00:09:50I mean, when you make a mistake on Emmitt Smith,
00:09:52it costs you six. Now,
00:09:54the lead block by Johnson, number 48,
00:09:56a good lead blocker. He gets stopped,
00:09:58and then it's number 79, Eric Williams,
00:10:00the right tackle, who threw the other key block down
00:10:02here. First down from the
00:10:0428-yard line.
00:10:06Lassik again
00:10:08breaks two tackles right on the play
00:10:10as he is able to get to the 23-yard
00:10:12line. Lassik showing very good
00:10:14quickness. Freddie Joe Nunn there to make
00:10:16the stop. And the preliminary
00:10:18signal is going to be holding against Dallas.
00:10:20Howard Rowe, the referee.
00:10:22There was a hold, but, you know,
00:10:24the thing about the Cowboys
00:10:26is they have emerging stars
00:10:28in virtually every position.
00:10:30Number 61 offense, 10-yard penalty,
00:10:32great pay first down.
00:10:34And one of those emerging
00:10:36stars is the right tackle, Eric
00:10:38Williams, number 79. He's going to
00:10:40come out here and trap out here.
00:10:42Now, again, it's the holding penalty,
00:10:44not on he, but someone else.
00:10:46But he kicks out, and that created
00:10:48a huge hold for Lassik.
00:10:50Even in the offensive line,
00:10:52the Cowboys have playmakers.
00:10:54And that's what makes it even more shocking
00:10:56that they're 0-2 at this point in the season.
00:10:58John Kiesink expected to be back
00:11:00after the bye week. He is
00:11:02blessed. He finished running like
00:11:04Hurston Twight.
00:11:06Aikman.
00:11:08Darrell Johnston, the fullback. The ball
00:11:10comes loose, but I think it's been rolled down
00:11:12and has. Boy, did Johnston
00:11:14take a shot that time
00:11:16from Dexter Davis, but he held on enough
00:11:18for the catch to set it up
00:11:20at the 32. And if the Cardinals are going
00:11:22to win this game, it's precisely
00:11:24what they're going to have to do, Gary. When you play
00:11:26the zone defense, you let the guy catch
00:11:28in front of you, and then you rally.
00:11:30And then what happens there, you better secure
00:11:32the ball after the catch, otherwise
00:11:34they're going to pop you, the Cardinals, and they're going to
00:11:36create turnovers. That is the whole
00:11:38philosophy of Fritz Schermer's defense.
00:11:40So they get five of those 10 yards
00:11:42back. It's now 2nd and
00:11:4415. Aikman 3 of 3
00:11:46for 39 yards.
00:11:51Got a lot of time, and sorts everyone
00:11:53out, and eventually hits Johnston
00:11:55again, and Johnston to the 25
00:11:57yard line. It still
00:11:59will be 7 yards short
00:12:01of the first down. The third down coming up.
00:12:03Gary, one of the very key
00:12:05players is Novacek right here.
00:12:07Now watch, he's going to get off the line
00:12:09here without getting bumped.
00:12:11Now the ball was not thrown to him, but if you
00:12:13don't bump him and jam him in the line of scrimmage,
00:12:15Jay Novacek may
00:12:17catch 100 passes tonight.
00:12:19What was it they were saying, Troy? They said
00:12:21he is a wide receiver playing
00:12:23tight end. He says he sees the
00:12:25same thing that I see.
00:12:273rd and 7 now for Dallas.
00:12:29No score, first drive of the game.
00:12:35Aikman, a little slant
00:12:37inside, and they make it to the 15
00:12:39yard line, and that will be enough for the
00:12:41first down. Alvin Harper with his
00:12:43second catch of the game, a 10 yard completion.
00:12:45Norm Turner, the offensive
00:12:47coordinator of the Cowboys, said yesterday
00:12:49about Alvin Harper. He was the
00:12:51difference at the end of the year last year because
00:12:53he can play quickly, just like
00:12:55Michael Irvin. Big targets on slants.
00:12:57I mean, the Cowboys
00:12:59with both receivers have great size
00:13:01in Irvin and Harper, but Turner said
00:13:03about Harper, he was the reason we scored
00:13:05a lot of points in the playoffs
00:13:07because Alvin Harper really
00:13:09came on as a receiver.
00:13:11Jimmie Johnson has to like what he sees.
00:13:13First down for the 15.
00:13:17Aikman to Lassik, Lassik to the 10.
00:13:19Boy, they are really mixing it up well.
00:13:21Aikman has not missed a pass.
00:13:23He's 5 of 5, and then he's
00:13:25gone to Lassik to soften him up in the middle.
00:13:27It'll be at the 11 yard line.
00:13:29Second down and 6.
00:13:31Watch the lead block by number 48, Darrell
00:13:33Johnston. Again, he is a great
00:13:35combination blocker and receiver.
00:13:37They don't use Johnston much as a runner,
00:13:39but perhaps the best
00:13:41combination of receiver and
00:13:43blocker at the fullback position
00:13:45in the NFL.
00:13:49This is what's happened thus far.
00:13:5110th play of the drive.
00:13:55Johnston to fullback.
00:13:57Johnston didn't carry the ball all that much.
00:13:59They use him a lot as a receiver
00:14:01as well as an outstanding blocker,
00:14:03setting the effort there, and it'll go to a third down.
00:14:05Once every lunar eclipse or so,
00:14:07they toss him one.
00:14:09Little bone there for Johnston, who missed
00:14:11almost the entire preseason.
00:14:13He broke the ring finger on his left hand,
00:14:15and he's playing without the brace, which had really
00:14:17hindered his play, and feels like
00:14:19he's back in now to mid-season form.
00:14:21Here's where the Cardinal defense
00:14:23has to respond at 3rd-2.
00:14:25Forced a field goal attempt by a new kicker,
00:14:27Eddie Murray, for the Cowboys.
00:14:29The defense has to respond.
00:14:313rd and 3 now.
00:14:338.08 to go in the first quarter.
00:14:37Delayed handoff to Lassit.
00:14:39Lassit's got it. He's got the touchdown.
00:14:41Dallas takes the lead.
00:14:53Well, I don't know if this guy inspired him,
00:14:55but they looked awfully good.
00:14:57Emmitt Smith had to be pleased with what
00:14:59Lassit did on that drive.
00:15:01He just took it in to score.
00:15:03Maybe they can save him again
00:15:05for the Green Bay game,
00:15:07but that was an incredibly
00:15:09impressive opening drive.
00:15:11I mean, that makes a statement.
00:15:13And that quiets the crowd
00:15:15when you're on the road.
00:15:17Eddie Murray, the new kicker, adds a point
00:15:19after it's 7-0 Dallas.
00:15:21We talked about
00:15:23Darrell Johnston as a receiver
00:15:25and as a lead blocker.
00:15:27Number 48, the left part of the screen again.
00:15:29The lead block on the middle linebacker,
00:15:31Walderstein. He cuts inside.
00:15:33And when you throw a lead box like that,
00:15:35your tailback, whether he's a rookie or not,
00:15:37is going to get into the end zone.
00:15:39His first in the NFL.
00:15:45Very nice, Gary.
00:15:47Thank you. How far was the touchdown run?
00:15:49Eight yards.
00:15:51Hey, Joe Vincius or Peter, somebody?
00:15:53Let's keep track
00:15:55of Darrell Johnston setting things up.
00:15:57He's got a couple of lead blocks.
00:15:59He's caught a pass now.
00:16:01I mean, let's keep a package
00:16:03of Darrell Johnston together.
00:16:05He's a guy that's thrown some key lead blocks here.
00:16:07He's caught the ball.
00:16:09What was the yards on it?
00:16:11Yeah, I mean, that's another one.
00:16:13That's another shot.
00:16:15I'll tell you what.
00:16:17This is exactly what the Cardinals
00:16:19didn't want to have happen.
00:16:21You know what?
00:16:24But, Peter, just keep
00:16:26a couple of plays of Johnston together
00:16:28as we put a package together.
00:16:30Watch the short kickoff
00:16:32here by Eddie Murray.
00:16:34Right, Gary? Yep.
00:16:36Okay.
00:16:39You got it.
00:16:48Yep. Yep.
00:16:50Thank you.
00:16:53They know when the red light goes on.
00:16:55He's not even wasting any energy
00:16:57until he sees that red light.
00:16:59I know.
00:17:01He's getting ready.
00:17:03Watch as soon as that red light goes on.
00:17:05Oh, dear.
00:17:14A rookie from Alabama,
00:17:16the national championship Crimson Tide team
00:17:18with his first touchdown in the NFL.
00:17:20He was the first rookie running back
00:17:22to start an opener for a defending
00:17:24world champion in the history of the NFL.
00:17:26Now, with Emmitt around, he seems to be
00:17:28playing a lot better.
00:17:30Eddie Murray kicking off.
00:17:32They're concerned about his short kickoff.
00:17:34You can see why.
00:17:36Johnny Bailey will take it.
00:17:38Bailey the 20.
00:17:40Bailey had a 43-yard return earlier this year
00:17:42on a kickoff.
00:17:44And so Steve Burlein, the former Dallas Cowboy
00:17:46coming over by free agency,
00:17:48had a shaky start in game one against the Eagles.
00:17:50He rebounded last week against the Skins.
00:17:52Outstanding leader.
00:17:54He just exudes confidence.
00:17:56He's really made this team believe
00:17:58they can be a winner.
00:18:00He's been a very contagious-type atmosphere
00:18:02that he's created.
00:18:04Very accurate passer, too.
00:18:06His confidence is desperately needed
00:18:08by this Cardinal team.
00:18:10Now he's got to go prove there's a reason
00:18:12to be confident.
00:18:14Down 7-0.
00:18:16First time they have the football.
00:18:18That's his first catch of the year.
00:18:20He's the H-back,
00:18:22and Brooks Roll takes it to the 27-yard line.
00:18:24Let's look now
00:18:26at this Phoenix offensive core.
00:18:28We mentioned Burlein.
00:18:30Garrison Hirsch.
00:18:32You're going to see a lot of him.
00:18:34They think he has greatness ahead of him.
00:18:36Clark, the former Redskin who had a big game
00:18:38last week against his former teammates.
00:18:40Sharp, one of the best at that backside tackle.
00:18:42And Mark May.
00:18:44He's the old warrior.
00:18:46Second down and four.
00:18:54Garrison Hirsch.
00:18:56Hirsch, able to get to the 31.
00:18:58Very close to the first down.
00:19:00He's able to get to the 31.5.
00:19:02Last week, he carried the ball
00:19:0422 times for 76 yards.
00:19:06Defensively,
00:19:08Dallas will use a lot of people.
00:19:10Casillas and Maryland, those starting.
00:19:12They've been battling back from injuries.
00:19:14Haley's the guy that just stirs it up.
00:19:16Robert Jones,
00:19:18second-year guy, started as a rookie.
00:19:20Ken Norton leading them in tackles thus far.
00:19:22And Darren Woodson.
00:19:24This is the guy that's really gotten the attention
00:19:26of Jimmie Johnson.
00:19:28He says, he's everything I wanted.
00:19:30It was a first down to the 32-yard line.
00:19:34Again,
00:19:36it's Hirsch.
00:19:38They want to establish him early.
00:19:40He'll take it out to the 39.
00:19:42That's a good way to establish a runner.
00:19:44He sees the field so well.
00:19:46They talk about his vision as a runner.
00:19:52They want him to get the feel.
00:19:54But you've got to always account for Charles Haley.
00:19:56Even when you run away from him.
00:19:58You give him a little shot there
00:20:00and you think you have him stopped.
00:20:02But when you have a cutback runner
00:20:04like you have in Garrison Hirsch,
00:20:06who may go anywhere, you have to stay on your blocks.
00:20:08Particularly when it's against Charles Haley.
00:20:10Gain of seven in the last place.
00:20:12Second and three.
00:20:16Near sideline.
00:20:18That'll be a first down.
00:20:20At the 48-yard line of Phoenix.
00:20:22Larry Brown over to make the stop.
00:20:24And Prowl has not caught that many balls.
00:20:26But they want to throw more to him today.
00:20:28And that's a good way to get him started.
00:20:30Ricky Prowl is a quality receiver.
00:20:32But when you give a guy this much cushion
00:20:34on a second and short yardage,
00:20:36three or four yards,
00:20:38it's easy pickings for a first down.
00:20:40What do you set up with a pass like that?
00:20:42You come back and run the hook and go later?
00:20:44Or a post?
00:20:46It's what you set up in the first quarter
00:20:48and it sets up the fourth quarter.
00:20:50The Cardinals now close to the midfield stripe
00:20:52on this drive.
00:20:54Trying to answer Dallas' initial drive.
00:20:56Here's Hirsch.
00:20:58He got away from him.
00:21:00And Hirsch gets to the 45
00:21:02on a remarkable second effort.
00:21:04Darren Woodson eventually made the tackle
00:21:06after Hirsch ran out of Tolbert's arms.
00:21:08You know, Joe Bugle said about Garrison Hirsch
00:21:10he's liable to run anywhere.
00:21:12And that's one of his strengths.
00:21:14And you get him in the I formation
00:21:16and he's not a little guy.
00:21:18I mean, he's 215 pounds.
00:21:20He can break some arm tackles
00:21:22as he did right there of Tony Tolbert.
00:21:24And again, what they're hoping that he can do
00:21:26is run the ball, create an eight-man front.
00:21:28We have to bring the strong safety up
00:21:30to stop the run.
00:21:32And then throw the ball.
00:21:34You've got to run the ball with Garrison Hirsch first.
00:21:38Second down and four for the 45.
00:21:40Berline, far side, Prohl again.
00:21:42And Prohl has a first-down catch.
00:21:44Ricky Prohl will be grounded
00:21:46short of the 35 by Thomas Everett.
00:21:48And this Phoenix team
00:21:50is looking just as sharp as Dallas did
00:21:52when they had the football.
00:21:54They're responding.
00:21:56And I'll tell you, one guy who's happy
00:21:58about Ricky Prohl catching some early passes,
00:22:00not only Joe Bugle, it's Gary Clark.
00:22:02When you start throwing the ball to Ricky Prohl,
00:22:04it means that Gary Clark
00:22:06sooner or later is going to get the single coverage
00:22:08they're looking for.
00:22:10Nobody has thrown an incomplete pass in this game.
00:22:12Aikman 5 of 5. Berline 3 for 3.
00:22:22Number 36 first down.
00:22:24Hirsch trying to bend it back
00:22:26maybe a half yard that time.
00:22:28Thomas Everett there to make the stop.
00:22:30He's been doing this the entire preseason.
00:22:32And there are times he's hesitant running the ball.
00:22:34Sometimes, Pat, they wish he'd just go for it.
00:22:36Yeah, what they're saying is
00:22:38the offensive linemen are saying he's got to trust them
00:22:40a little bit more and stay with the hole.
00:22:42I mean, in college, you can bounce it outside
00:22:44and outrun a lot of people.
00:22:46In professional football, there's not a lot of open spaces.
00:22:48So the offensive linemen have talked with him this week
00:22:50about, hey, trust me, hang in there with me,
00:22:52let the hole develop before you try
00:22:54to make a 40-yard run.
00:22:56Make a four-yard run first.
00:22:58First down, virtually 10 to go.
00:23:02That's Butch Lowell in motion.
00:23:04Pressure up the middle.
00:23:06Berline trying to get out of it.
00:23:08He won't. Russell Maryland wrestles him down.
00:23:10The pressure coming up the middle
00:23:12chased him, flushed him out of the play.
00:23:14And Maryland then was able to finish it
00:23:16in a loss back to the 45-yard line.
00:23:18Russell Maryland's
00:23:20first step always
00:23:22causes a lot of commotion
00:23:24in the backfield.
00:23:26He had to stand right around Mark May,
00:23:28number 73, to make the play.
00:23:30And Maryland was talking to us yesterday
00:23:32about, hey, I'd love to be in third downs
00:23:34more. He's kind of a first and second down guy.
00:23:36They take him out in pass rush situations.
00:23:38But he's got a terrific first step
00:23:40and he really caused some penetration.
00:23:42He's really been slowed with a turf tow.
00:23:44But now feels he's come back from that.
00:23:46Third and 19.
00:23:48That is Randall Hill
00:23:50in number 81 in motion.
00:23:52Berline over the middle. Flag on the play.
00:23:54Larry centers makes the catch.
00:23:56He's to the 39 of Dallas.
00:23:58But there's a penalty flag thrown at the
00:24:00feet of Berline.
00:24:02And let's see what this is all about.
00:24:04Going to be holding against Phoenix.
00:24:08Joe Bugle, who
00:24:10was the guy who started the original
00:24:12offense. Penalties declined.
00:24:14Brings up fourth down.
00:24:16And Washington, and he doesn't like those holding calls.
00:24:18So they'll have to get rid of the football.
00:24:20As Rich Camarillo
00:24:22will come in and punt. And there was some concern
00:24:24whether Camarillo would be able to punt today.
00:24:26He pulled the calf muscle
00:24:28in the warm-ups last week.
00:24:30And didn't punt until Thursday of this week.
00:24:36Kevin Williams, the rookie, back
00:24:38to receive it.
00:24:40Pat Beach, the snapper.
00:24:46Trying to angle it to the near side.
00:24:48And the ball is going to be
00:24:50hit too far into the end zone.
00:24:52What you love.
00:24:54I just gave up 20 yards.
00:24:56So it's a 39-yard punt.
00:24:58But the Cowboys will have it
00:25:00at the 20-yard line.
00:25:02Dallas with a 7-0 lead.
00:25:04And they get the football for the second time.
00:25:14Good start there, Gary.
00:25:17Okey-dokey.
00:25:19I think this...
00:25:21Yeah.
00:25:27Yeah, that might be kind of interesting.
00:25:29Hey, Peter.
00:25:31Okay, I can try to talk to you a little bit more.
00:25:35Thank you.
00:25:37I thought that was a comparison
00:25:39between Lassik and Smith
00:25:41in their first two games.
00:25:43Yeah.
00:25:45Okay, that's good.
00:25:47That's fine.
00:25:49Yep.
00:25:51Look at this.
00:25:55Yeah, he's his hero now.
00:25:59That's a nice shot there of Haley.
00:26:01Keep watching. If you happen to see Emmett,
00:26:03don't let us forget.
00:26:05They may not need him now.
00:26:07Yeah.
00:26:15Yeah, if they score here...
00:26:17Boy, this first quarter's gone fast.
00:26:19How many minutes?
00:26:21219 left.
00:26:23Two long drives.
00:26:25Yep.
00:26:31Yep, that won't stop anything.
00:26:33Oh, that.
00:26:35I thought you meant that out there.
00:26:39Ganeas Williams came back in.
00:26:41Was he in before?
00:26:43Yeah, he came back.
00:26:51Dallas coming on the road,
00:26:53and they've quieted this crowd
00:26:55after that impressive drive of 80 yards earlier.
00:26:57They get the ball for the second time.
00:26:59Lassik was impressive in the first series.
00:27:01Five carries, 30 yards.
00:27:03Hurst, on the other hand,
00:27:05four for 17.
00:27:07And, of course, Derrick with his first touchdown ever
00:27:09in the NFL.
00:27:13From the 20, into round reverse.
00:27:17Kevin Williams and the rookie
00:27:19from Miami of Florida brings it out
00:27:21to the 30, just short of the first down.
00:27:23John Booty reacting finally.
00:27:25This guy has such speed.
00:27:27He's around a 4.240 guy.
00:27:29He is fast, but big ol' Nate Newton,
00:27:31number 61, I mean, he was trying
00:27:33to block someone. He knew he had a fast guy
00:27:35behind him in Kevin Williams,
00:27:37and all 303 pounds, and Nate Newton
00:27:39was out, and Nate Newton was out.
00:27:41He looked good.
00:27:43That's not as much weight as he used to carry out there.
00:27:45They used to just spread some oil and vinegar
00:27:47and let him graze out in the end zone
00:27:49before the games.
00:27:51They called him the kitchen.
00:27:53Second down, less than a yard to go.
00:27:59He appears to have the first down
00:28:01across the 30 to the 31.
00:28:03So what have the Cowboys done?
00:28:05They've used virtually everyone in their offense.
00:28:07Their offensive line, as we talked about
00:28:09the playmakers, they've used those guys,
00:28:11particularly Eric Williams and Poles and such.
00:28:13They've used Michael Irvin and Alvin Harper.
00:28:15Lastic has scored. Darrell Johnson
00:28:17has thrown some key blocks. Of course, Emmitt Smith
00:28:19has not played. J. Novacek hasn't
00:28:21caught a pass, but he has been open.
00:28:23They use all their players,
00:28:25and they use them in the best way they can.
00:28:27Take advantage of all their talents.
00:28:29First down for the 31
00:28:31for the Cowboys. 7-0 Dallas.
00:28:33Aikman, a lot of time.
00:28:35Going up top, far sideline.
00:28:37Goes up, and a catch is made
00:28:39by Alvin Harper.
00:28:41A sliding grab,
00:28:43and that was a remarkable catch.
00:28:45He had a defender all over him.
00:28:47A 44-yard grab
00:28:49to the 25-yard line of Phoenix.
00:28:51Two years ago, Alvin Harper
00:28:53couldn't make this adjustment,
00:28:55but Alvin Harper
00:28:57has made this Cowboy team
00:28:59a much more difficult team to defend
00:29:01because now you can throw him
00:29:03any kind of route, and now he'll adjust
00:29:05the ball. It's not just catching
00:29:07the perfectly thrown pass.
00:29:09The one that's not thrown so well,
00:29:11and yet you still go after it and make the play.
00:29:13Alvin Harper sets him up
00:29:15at the 25.
00:29:17Novacek in motion.
00:29:19Lastic carrying the football, breaking tackles.
00:29:21He gets five as he takes it to the 20.
00:29:25And that has been a very fast
00:29:27first quarter as Dallas,
00:29:29with two very good drives, they've gotten
00:29:31to the end zone once, and they're headed there again.
00:29:33We have a Cardinal shaken up.
00:29:35It's Chuck Cecil. We'll check his
00:29:37status out when we return.
00:29:39We've played the first 15 minutes.
00:29:417-0
00:29:43Dallas.
00:29:53Chuck Cecil. Maybe he's all right.
00:29:55He's a tough guy.
00:29:57This is exactly what I figured.
00:29:59This is exactly what I knew.
00:30:01I've been here too many times.
00:30:07Here he goes with his
00:30:09wheeze again. Holy smokes.
00:30:11That's embarrassing.
00:30:15That's a beautiful place to be, though, isn't it?
00:30:17It is. It's gorgeous.
00:30:19We're finally outside.
00:30:21We're not in a dome. We could be in your
00:30:23alma mater and be in danger.
00:30:25Thank you very much.
00:30:27Well, you've got to be tough to live there, Gary.
00:30:29That's why you never make it.
00:30:31That's true.
00:30:33I know better.
00:30:35Okay, so we have, what is it?
00:30:37Second and what?
00:30:39Second and five.
00:30:45Classic looks pretty good to me.
00:30:47Are you taping that?
00:30:49That's reflective.
00:30:51They're having some fun.
00:30:53They're relaxed.
00:30:55I love that.
00:30:57I'd come back and show that with Michael Irvin.
00:31:05You got one?
00:31:07That's right. I forgot.
00:31:09Boy, that was a fast quarter.
00:31:11Wasn't it or was it just me?
00:31:19101 yards already.
00:31:21They had 150 total yards in the first quarter.
00:31:23That's a good stat.
00:31:35Well, the Dallas Cowboys have played
00:31:37very well in this game.
00:31:39Aikman is 6-6 for 101 yards.
00:31:41They have 150 yards of total offense
00:31:43in the first 15 minutes.
00:31:45As we start the second quarter,
00:31:47second and five for the 20.
00:31:51Harper goes in motion.
00:31:57Classic.
00:31:59Classic will get to the 20 and that's about all.
00:32:01Pretty good fill that time
00:32:03from a safety spot by Michael Zordich.
00:32:05Also Eric Swann.
00:32:07That'll bring up the third down, still five.
00:32:09You know, Gary, we were just talking about Phoenix
00:32:11and they've been in this position before
00:32:13early in the season with a big game at home
00:32:15and they've never quite responded.
00:32:17This is a game they can't afford
00:32:19to forget. Dallas get up 14 points.
00:32:21I mean, this is one of those
00:32:23turning point third downs
00:32:25for the Cardinal defense.
00:32:27They have to stop forcing the field goal.
00:32:29Force the field goal to 10.
00:32:31You've got so many windows of opportunity
00:32:33and they need to take advantage of it.
00:32:35Third and five.
00:32:37Aikman, far side, Novacek
00:32:39and Novacek ties for the first down
00:32:41and he got it.
00:32:43Novacek able to get inside the 15-yard line.
00:32:45John Foote finally caught up with him.
00:32:47Here's the guy last year that led all tight ends
00:32:49with 68 catches.
00:32:51Well, you know,
00:32:53the consistency of J. Novacek,
00:32:55over 60 catches over the last three years.
00:32:5784. See, they don't jam him.
00:32:59I think if you don't jam J. Novacek
00:33:01and you let him get started,
00:33:03he's going to kill you.
00:33:05And he's got the hands of a wide receiver.
00:33:07It's kind of a half a catch there,
00:33:09but he got it.
00:33:11Kind of massaged that ball.
00:33:13He did, but you have to jam him at the line of scrimmage.
00:33:15Aikman still hasn't missed.
00:33:17He's seven for seven,
00:33:19using four different receivers.
00:33:21Delayed handoff to Lasek.
00:33:23Lasek doesn't fool too many people,
00:33:25and especially Brent Wallerstad,
00:33:27a rookie, number 52 out of Arizona State,
00:33:29who is one of the best open field
00:33:31tacklers they've had in a long time.
00:33:33He's a sixth round draft pick.
00:33:35That was a pretty good open field tackle
00:33:37right there on Lasek.
00:33:39Gained a yard, second and nine.
00:33:41The Cardinals really need to get him
00:33:43to absolutely settle
00:33:45for a field goal on this drive.
00:33:47And you know, the Cardinals have not blitzed yet.
00:33:49They've been playing that zone.
00:33:51They have not come close to getting to Troy Aikman.
00:33:53As a matter of fact, the last two games against him,
00:33:55they haven't sacked him.
00:34:01Aikman on a second and nine.
00:34:03Being flushed out, being chased.
00:34:05Shows how strong he is.
00:34:07Chris Oldham eventually knocks him out of bounds.
00:34:09He may have picked up a yard
00:34:11in that scramble.
00:34:13So we're going to come to a third down
00:34:15and the Cardinals want to put a stop on right here.
00:34:17This is where the Cardinals' defense
00:34:19gets tough when you try to throw the ball
00:34:21down here because of this zone.
00:34:23I mean, everybody's just backing up,
00:34:25keeping everything in front of them,
00:34:27watching the quarterback's eyes.
00:34:29Nothing there.
00:34:31Lasek comes open over the middle.
00:34:33But, you know, this zone defense
00:34:35gets very tough inside the 15-yard line
00:34:37for the Cardinals.
00:34:39You can't get the ball down to the end zone
00:34:41unless you really drill it.
00:34:43Third down, virtually ten.
00:34:45Derek Gaynor now is coming at running back.
00:34:51Lasek in motion. Here is Gaynor.
00:34:53And Gaynor thunders forward.
00:34:55He is about a yard short of a first and goal.
00:34:57He needed to get to the four.
00:34:59He stopped just short of the five.
00:35:01It's fourth down coming up.
00:35:03This guy is big. He weighs 240 pounds.
00:35:05And he had a block and he looked like
00:35:07he was going to the end zone for a moment.
00:35:09Fourth down, and that means that
00:35:11their new kicker, Eddie Murray,
00:35:13number three, will come in.
00:35:15I say new. He's been around a long time.
00:35:1714th year in the league.
00:35:19Number two among
00:35:21active scorers.
00:35:23Only Nick Lowry has scored more.
00:35:25This will be a 23-yard attempt.
00:35:29And Eddie Murray
00:35:31is able to put three points on the board.
00:35:33Ten-nothing.
00:35:35Dallas.
00:35:3712 minutes left to go
00:35:39in this first half.
00:35:41And the Cardinals hoping to answer.
00:35:47He's got the good face mask.
00:35:49He does. Look at that.
00:35:51He looks like a player.
00:35:53You like that, didn't you?
00:35:55I do.
00:35:57Yeah, it sounded
00:35:59rather incredible.
00:36:01I don't see anything different there.
00:36:03No, you're right.
00:36:05It's just a good play.
00:36:07Well,
00:36:09at least we still have a game.
00:36:11Well,
00:36:13now you tell me.
00:36:15Look at Swan get up there.
00:36:19All right.
00:36:21Wow.
00:36:23We may get Pat to the airport by seven.
00:36:25Yeah, that's good.
00:36:27Does he have enough tattoos?
00:36:29He should be at a Raider game.
00:36:31Look at this guy.
00:36:33He probably came from there.
00:36:35Drove over.
00:36:37Oh, my. I'm telling you.
00:36:39Yeah, that's what I figured.
00:36:41Did you really?
00:36:43Every week.
00:36:45We might bring that in there somehow.
00:36:47That's right.
00:36:49But I've got to find out
00:36:51what I want to have on this side.
00:36:53There's so many things I want.
00:36:55Yeah, that's exactly right.
00:36:57There's so many things I'd like to say.
00:36:59Okay, we've got to have something
00:37:01out of the Cardinals here, fellas.
00:37:03Okay, who's back for them, Tom?
00:37:05Yes, sir.
00:37:19Ten-nothing Dallas.
00:37:21Here in Kansas City, Lonnie Dale,
00:37:23our director, saying hello
00:37:25to his wife, Tonya.
00:37:27Boy, I tell you, Lonnie, you'll go to
00:37:29every extreme, won't you?
00:37:31Eddie Murray will kick it off,
00:37:33and Troy Aikman has just
00:37:35played splendidly well
00:37:37in this first half.
00:37:39Johnny Bailey back deep for the Cardinals.
00:37:41They're expecting a short kick.
00:37:43Bailey clear up at the floor.
00:37:45And that's what they're going to get.
00:37:47Bailey, however,
00:37:49from the run now,
00:37:51comes forward to the 15,
00:37:53and will be tackled at the 16.
00:37:55So the Cardinals, who had things going
00:37:57pretty well in their first possession,
00:37:59only to have a holding penalty,
00:38:01short-circuit that drive,
00:38:03now need to get something going.
00:38:05They trail ten to nothing,
00:38:0711.49 to go in the first half.
00:38:09Okay.
00:38:11Boy, this crowd is quiet, isn't it?
00:38:13I mean, it's just like...
00:38:15It's a sellout, though.
00:38:17Look, there's not any seats
00:38:19available, I can see.
00:38:21Man, you only get so many opportunities.
00:38:23Well, yeah, they need to drive here.
00:38:25I mean, something has to happen.
00:38:27Get Gary Clark involved.
00:38:29They haven't thrown his way yet, right?
00:38:31No, they haven't thrown his way yet.
00:38:33They haven't thrown his way yet.
00:38:35They haven't thrown his way yet.
00:38:37They haven't thrown his way yet, right?
00:38:45Tom, does this remind you of anything?
00:38:4791?
00:38:49Yeah.
00:38:51Oh, you guys.
00:38:53Doubting Thomases.
00:38:55Shout out to the ISO monitor.
00:38:57Look at the ISO monitor.
00:38:59Should we tell it straight?
00:39:03Forget it.
00:39:05I tell you, you can't.
00:39:07Alright.
00:39:11Anything change?
00:39:13They've got everybody in there, right, Tom?
00:39:15They've got three wideouts.
00:39:17They've got Hill in there, right?
00:39:29Okay.
00:39:31Well...
00:39:33Something good's got to happen here.
00:39:35Yeah, you're right.
00:39:37We've got Woodson, Smith is in there.
00:39:39I think it's Hill, isn't it?
00:39:41Hill, Parole and Clark.
00:39:43They go for him?
00:39:45Yeah, I think so.
00:39:47We'll see Hill in there anyway.
00:39:49There you go.
00:39:51That's my group right there.
00:39:57Hey, there's Joe V's guy.
00:40:03The Cardinals, as we come back at the 11.49 mark of the second quarter, have the ball at the 16-yard line.
00:40:17I'm Gary Bender along with Pat Hayden.
00:40:19The Cardinals coming in here with high hopes of somehow establishing some credibility.
00:40:23And now down 10 to nothing.
00:40:25They pick up the blitz.
00:40:27No place to go.
00:40:29Darren Woodson, who played collegiately here in the same stadium for Arizona State, was there to make the stop.
00:40:35There was a hole there for a moment, but Darren Woodson, number 28, closed that hole very quickly.
00:40:41I mean, there was something good about to happen until the strong safety.
00:40:45But as you mentioned, Gary, Jimmy Johnson was there to make the stop.
00:40:50I mean, there was something good about to happen until the strong safety.
00:40:53But as you mentioned, Gary, Jimmy Johnson was there to make the stop.
00:40:55He said, hey, this guy can do everything.
00:40:57He's 215 pounds.
00:40:59He can run.
00:41:00He can hit.
00:41:01And he stopped Garrison Hurst there from what should have been at least a five- or six-yard gain.
00:41:06James Washington, who started a year ago, is out with an injury.
00:41:09Woodson has stepped forward.
00:41:11Third.
00:41:12Makes a second down in 11.
00:41:14Third line.
00:41:16And that's not close.
00:41:18Garrison Hurst, the intended receiver at the 10, trying to set up the flare, but coming up the middle,
00:41:23very good pressure from Tony Casillas.
00:41:25And so already it's third down and 11 yards to go.
00:41:29First miss for Burr line.
00:41:31He had hit his first four passes.
00:41:33First miss of the game.
00:41:35And so now the third and 11.
00:41:37One of the key matchups, Luis Sharp, number 67, against Charles Haley.
00:41:42Again, when you have Charles Haley, you know you have a couple of different rushes.
00:41:46He can run upfield on you quick, or he can bull rush you or come inside.
00:41:50And the mix of rushes is what makes Haley very difficult to block.
00:41:58Mickey Bull goes in motion.
00:42:02Burr line over the middle.
00:42:04Catch is made beautifully by Johnny Bailey, and he fights his way to a first down.
00:42:08That is a big catch for this Cardinal team.
00:42:11On a third and 11, they get 13 yards to Johnny Bailey coming out of the backfield.
00:42:16Couple things happened there.
00:42:17It started with protection.
00:42:19Burr line had some good protection, and then he hung in there.
00:42:22Didn't get impatient.
00:42:23He felt he had good protection and was just waiting, waiting, waiting for Bailey,
00:42:27and then he threw a pretty good pass because Bill Bates had Bailey well covered.
00:42:31And I might add a good catch, too.
00:42:34So Johnny Bailey, who has been a guy who just makes plays, according to Joe Bugle,
00:42:39just made one there, and they needed him.
00:42:41First down at the 29.
00:42:47Quick hits far side, and Gary Clark makes his first catch.
00:42:50But no place to go because Larry Brown was on top of him instantaneously.
00:42:55Clark had a big game last week coming up with six catches for 95 yards.
00:42:59He started very slowly.
00:43:01Dropped four passes in the first game against Philadelphia.
00:43:04Just trying too hard, he said.
00:43:06Well, Joe Bugle said about Gary Clark, of all the free agents we acquired,
00:43:09he is the most valuable because he's the guy who can make plays for us on Sundays
00:43:14that can win ballgames for us.
00:43:17That's what we were talking about.
00:43:19The first miss a moment ago by Burr line on that little pass.
00:43:23Dana 2.
00:43:27Gary Guare is in motion for the Cardinals.
00:43:31Burr line trying to set up a screen.
00:43:34Trying to find some running room.
00:43:36Able to get close to the 35.
00:43:38Charles Haley doubling back to make the tackle, number 94.
00:43:41You know, Gary, everybody talks about the speed of this Dallas cowboy team,
00:43:46and what speed really allows you to do is get back into the play after you get blocked.
00:43:52I mean, that's happened with Charles Haley.
00:43:55He got blocked there, but he runs back.
00:43:57But all these players.
00:43:59Now, the other thing here about Steve Burr line,
00:44:01he can throw the ball underneath a lot of guys running and rushing.
00:44:05A good little slip play there by Garrison Hurst for the reception.
00:44:09Third down, a long four.
00:44:11Misdirection handoff to Bailey.
00:44:13He's got the first down, and Johnny Bailey now has made two very important plays on this drive.
00:44:19Both of them coming up on third down, and he's got the ball out to the 43-yard line.
00:44:24Last week when the Cardinals beat the Redskins,
00:44:27Johnny Bailey rushed for three first downs in nickel situations.
00:44:30He just did it there again.
00:44:32He made a catch a few plays ago, as you mentioned, Gary, on third and 11,
00:44:35and then on third and four against a nickel defense, a little inside draw or trap,
00:44:39and he keeps the chains moving.
00:44:42Cardinals down 10 to nothing.
00:44:43Now have a first down at the 42.
00:44:48Burr line, far side.
00:44:50Catch is made by Clark.
00:44:52Clark trying to fight for additional yardage and a flag there.
00:44:56Very late, and Luis Sharp was upset about something.
00:44:59Clark made the catch across the 50-yard line, a couple yards short of the first down,
00:45:03but it may come back.
00:45:05I want to tell you, Larry Brown, the corner for the Cowboys,
00:45:08has made two very good tackles on Gary Clark.
00:45:11One in the short pass, and then that one there,
00:45:14because if he doesn't tackle him, Gary Clark is off for a big game.
00:45:17Holding number 67 on the offense.
00:45:20Grabbing the face mask, 10-yard penalty, great first down.
00:45:23That's the reason Luis Sharp was upset.
00:45:26There's Brown, number 24, against Gary Clark.
00:45:30I mean, he played him short, well, a moment ago.
00:45:33Then he comes back and makes the play here.
00:45:35Now he's out there.
00:45:36You know, he's the professor on Gilligan's Island.
00:45:38He's out there all by himself and still made the tackle there on Gary Clark.
00:45:42Well, he's a 12th-round draft pick.
00:45:44321st pick of the draft when he came in out of TCU.
00:45:48Your favorite show, by the way, Gilligan's Island.
00:45:50He's still watching that.
00:45:51Well, I'm old enough to remember that.
00:45:52First down, 20.
00:45:54Blitz may be coming.
00:45:56Here it comes.
00:45:57Kenneth Gant on the blitz.
00:45:59Hand off instead to Garrison Hurst,
00:46:01and Hurst getting some of the yardage back across the 35 to the 38-yard line.
00:46:06One thing Garrison Hurst is doing in this game, Gary,
00:46:09that he didn't do in the first two games,
00:46:11he is staying with the hole.
00:46:13I mean, he is staying behind Luis Sharp and Mark May
00:46:17and all the guys who are supposed to.
00:46:1873 is May on the right side.
00:46:2085 is Ware, the tight end.
00:46:21And he just kind of picks his way.
00:46:23And with a guy like that, everybody has to block,
00:46:25including the wide receivers, because with his speed,
00:46:28you don't know where he's going to end up.
00:46:29And if the wide receiver makes a block, perhaps you have a 40-yard gain.
00:46:33Second down now, 15 yards to go.
00:46:37Burr line on target to Randall Hill,
00:46:39the fastest wide receiver for the Cardinals.
00:46:42He's got the catch to the 49-yard line.
00:46:44Gain of 10, but they're still short of the first down.
00:46:49It'll be four yards short of the first down.
00:46:52Getting up very slowly is Kevin Smith,
00:46:54who was their first draft pick of a year ago.
00:46:58Gary, both these quarterbacks, as we've talked about,
00:47:00have really been on today.
00:47:02And defensively, both these teams are going to have to change it up on him.
00:47:06I mean, they're going to have to come after him,
00:47:08a blitz, a safety blitz, linebacker,
00:47:10because right now, they are very much in rhythm.
00:47:13Third down, make it five to go.
00:47:20Randall Hill goes in motion.
00:47:23Burr line trying to screen over the middle,
00:47:25and Johnny Bailey this time will not get it done on third down.
00:47:29And because Darren Woodson, the strong safety,
00:47:32stayed home and fought off a blocker,
00:47:35made the stop fourth down for Phoenix.
00:47:37You can see why Jimmy Johnson likes Darren Woodson, number 28, so much.
00:47:41He has him man for man.
00:47:43Now, he has to fight through a bunch of traffic there.
00:47:45I mean, there's a bunch of big bodies, but he has them all to himself.
00:47:48You see Leon Lett, who was blocked for a moment, but he didn't stay blocked.
00:47:52That's about speed.
00:47:54If you get blocked, if you have speed, you still can recover.
00:47:57So again, they have a drive stalled because of a penalty.
00:48:01Camarillo to pump the football.
00:48:03Not an exceptionally good punt.
00:48:05Coming up is Kevin Williams, and he makes the fair catch,
00:48:08and they'll set it up at the 22-yard line.
00:48:1036-yard punt by Camarillo.
00:48:12Not up to his Pro Bowl standards.
00:48:15We'll be back. 5.42 to go in the first half.
00:48:17Ten to nothing, Dallas.
00:48:25Two penalties.
00:48:26Now that's, you know, they always end up with a penalty.
00:48:29You know, I've seen them do that so many times.
00:48:31Sharp got one, and then the one earlier.
00:48:32Well, you're just a naysayer.
00:48:34You're just a naysayer.
00:48:36Hand me that down there, that lemon.
00:48:38That.
00:48:39Okay.
00:48:40What other matchups do we need?
00:48:42We followed Darrell Johnston here a little bit.
00:48:44We haven't shown Norv Turner here.
00:48:45Yeah.
00:48:46Okay.
00:48:47Yes, sir.
00:48:48Yep.
00:48:55Okay.
00:48:56Now, is that?
00:48:57That's just after two weeks.
00:49:01Yeah, 121 yards.
00:49:05Did he?
00:49:06Oh, he had 80.
00:49:07That's right.
00:49:08Was it 84?
00:49:09I knew it was long.
00:49:10Yeah.
00:49:11Okay, good.
00:49:12Thank you.
00:49:13You're going to do that?
00:49:14You're going to do that right out?
00:49:1685?
00:49:17When are you going to do that?
00:49:23Alright.
00:49:25You got a card, right?
00:49:29Oh, he's doing some body damage.
00:49:30He's doing some damage inside where he loves to work.
00:49:38Alright.
00:49:39Look at that.
00:49:40He even has numbers on his socks.
00:49:41Okay.
00:49:44He has an L and an R on there.
00:49:46It's an NFC, though.
00:49:47It's not...
00:49:49Yeah.
00:49:50Okay.
00:49:51Yeah.
00:49:52Okay.
00:49:53Got you.
00:49:54You know, Lutz had an ankle problem.
00:50:07Ten-nothing, Dallas.
00:50:09Leon Lutz has been having some problems with a sore ankle.
00:50:12Limping around a little bit.
00:50:13He did not start tonight because of the injury.
00:50:15And he'll sit down for a while while the Dallas offense takes over at the 22-yard line.
00:50:23Dallas is averaging 8.2 yards per play thus far.
00:50:27And Derek Gaynor is in the backfield for the Cowboys.
00:50:35Aikman over the top.
00:50:36It's Harper again.
00:50:37And Harper wearing the Cardinals out.
00:50:40He makes another catch.
00:50:41That's a 17-yarder.
00:50:42That's where he started the ball game, a 17-yarder.
00:50:44Out to the 39.
00:50:46Sooner or later, they're going to get the ball to Michael Irvin, too.
00:50:49Time for tonight's GMC Truck Leaderboard.
00:50:52We're going to take a look at the rookie NFC rushers.
00:50:55Now, this is after two weeks.
00:50:56Neal, of course, is out because of a broken ankle.
00:50:58Derek Brown today had 121 yards.
00:51:01And Derek Lasser coming in third among the rookies on our GMC Truck Leaderboard.
00:51:08As we come back on a first-down carry across the 40 to the 41-yard line.
00:51:14Well, remember, five minutes remaining here in the second quarter.
00:51:17Jimmy Johnson said that if he was going to play Emmitt Smith,
00:51:21he might play him a little bit at the end of the second quarter.
00:51:24And if not, maybe some in the second half.
00:51:26But the way this game is going thus far with a 10-point lead,
00:51:30maybe he's thinking, hey, if I can get through this game with a week,
00:51:32I have a bye next week, and I have two weeks to get him ready for Green Bay Packers.
00:51:36You've got to think that way, I would think.
00:51:38Second down and nine after that last carry by Diener.
00:51:41Novacek comes in motion.
00:51:45Aikman takes a shot, gets rid of the ball, and the completion is Irvin.
00:51:49And Michael Irvin is out of bounds at the 38-yard line of Phoenix.
00:51:53A 22-yard gain on the play.
00:51:56Michael Irvin is a strong, strong guy at the line of scrimmage.
00:52:00I mean, he'll use his hands, he'll use his feet to get open.
00:52:04And this Dallas offense is in sync tonight.
00:52:07And Norv Turner, the offensive coordinator, is calling a great game
00:52:10because he has used everybody.
00:52:13He's used Alvin Harper, and what does that do when you throw the ball to Harper?
00:52:16It sets up Michael Irvin.
00:52:18He's used Novacek, and he's used Johnston, and he's used Lassen.
00:52:21And he has not missed. He is 9 of 9.
00:52:28Aikman going for 10 in a row and almost got it.
00:52:30That's pretty good defense at times by Lorenzo Lynch on Michael Irvin.
00:52:34Lynch did not start because of the groin, and he came over and played that one very well.
00:52:42Coming up in halftime, the Fruit of the Loom halftime report with Bob Neal and Kevin Kiley.
00:52:47Boy, the weather now really starting to cool.
00:52:49Beautiful day here in the Valley of the Sun.
00:52:52Scores and highlights from Week 3.
00:52:54We have an analysis of the first half.
00:52:56Anthony Munoz, another one of those Trojans from USC.
00:52:59It was nice to be outdoors for a chance.
00:53:01First two weeks, we were in dome stadiums.
00:53:04Second down, 10.
00:53:06A late handoff to Gaynor.
00:53:08Gaynor, no place to go.
00:53:10Gaynor used to play for the Browns, and the Raiders came over last year.
00:53:14A big back who can catch the ball.
00:53:19Lorenzo Lynch and Michael Irvin have something going over here.
00:53:23It's a one-on-one dance.
00:53:26You know, a lot of things that go on away from the action, away from the ball, really tell a story.
00:53:32I mean, something's going to be happening there again,
00:53:35because Michael Irvin desperately now wants to beat Lorenzo Lynch.
00:53:38He promised two-step there, didn't he?
00:53:40Third down, they lost some yardage.
00:53:42Third down and a long 10, 10 1⁄2.
00:53:48Lynch coming up the middle.
00:53:50Aikman gets rid of it, and a very good play that time.
00:53:54Defensively on the far side by Steve Loftin.
00:53:57Loftin racing over, batted the ball down.
00:54:00He's their fastest corner, and he saved a long completion, and it'll bring up fourth down.
00:54:06It was perfectly timed tip by Loftin, number 28.
00:54:09Again in the zone, leads the quarterback in the pattern, and then tips it away.
00:54:14I mean, you watch the quarterback, you watch the receiver out of the other eye.
00:54:18As soon as you see the quarterback plant, you know the ball's in the air,
00:54:22and you drive, and at the last minute, you knock it away from the receiver.
00:54:25That's a heck of a play by Loftin.
00:54:27That receiver, being Harper, is now coming in as John Jett,
00:54:30who took over the punting chores after Mike Saxon punted for eight years.
00:54:34He hits this one very high.
00:54:36Johnny Bailey's going to let it hit, and it'll go sideways, and then inside the five,
00:54:42and that ends up being a superb punt.
00:54:44You know, he had five of eight punts inside the 20 prior to that one.
00:54:48He's had no touchbacks.
00:54:50Yeah, I like that.
00:54:51And he's got a good face mask.
00:54:52Look at that.
00:54:53I love it.
00:54:54He looks like a player.
00:54:55Ten to nothing, Dallas.
00:55:03Hey, great.
00:55:04Thank you.
00:55:05Very nice, Rog.
00:55:06Very nice, Rog.
00:55:07Gary, you're okay.
00:55:09Incredibly average.
00:55:10Okay.
00:55:11Yeah.
00:55:12Yes.
00:55:14They got three timeouts, right?
00:55:16Boy, this is going fast, isn't it?
00:55:18Woo, 259.
00:55:23Yes, sir.
00:55:25I hope so, yeah.
00:55:27I'm a man here.
00:55:36After the how many, Peter?
00:55:38Okay.
00:55:39Okay.
00:55:42You don't trust me, do you?
00:55:46Ron Moore is the new running back, by the way.
00:55:49How many periods has Hurst had?
00:55:52Six or 21?
00:55:55I don't know.
00:56:00Get it on the teleprompter.
00:56:02Okay, pals.
00:56:03We have.
00:56:04How many?
00:56:05What are the numbers on Hurst?
00:56:06They've changed running backs.
00:56:07Oh, I'm sorry.
00:56:08You already have them.
00:56:09Yeah, see?
00:56:10Great minds think along the same lines.
00:56:11Of course, I thought of that about a minute ago.
00:56:13Well, you have a greater mind than I do.
00:56:15Thank you.
00:56:20A little sarcasm here.
00:56:21Yeah, absolutely.
00:56:24Okay.
00:56:25What's going to happen here?
00:56:26What's going to happen?
00:56:40Outstanding punt by Jett sets the Cardinals up at the 4-yard line.
00:56:45Phoenix trailing 10-0 as we go in now to the waning minutes of this first half.
00:56:502.59 to be exact.
00:56:52The worst starting field position they've had in this game.
00:57:02Looks like we had some movement, but I don't see a penalty flag.
00:57:05Berline sprinting in the end zone.
00:57:07Gets out of there, throws to Randall Hill.
00:57:09They fight for it.
00:57:10A penalty flag, and we're going to have pass interference.
00:57:14That was Kevin Smith with Randall Hill fighting for the ball at the 4-yard line.
00:57:18I thought initially Luis Sharp might have fired back off the line of scrimmage before the snap,
00:57:23but there was no penalty there.
00:57:25I want to tell you, he had a heck of a rush from Charles Haley.
00:57:28Charles Haley just pushed Sharp right back into Steve Berline.
00:57:32The top of the screen there, he just pushes Sharp away.
00:57:35He's 280, but Berline is an athlete.
00:57:37He can move around a little bit, and he gives an athletic receiver, Randall Hill, a chance.
00:57:43Gives him an opportunity.
00:57:48Hill's going to make a good adjustment.
00:57:50He's just getting held.
00:57:51It's a good call.
00:57:52Well, they put it up and made something happen.
00:57:54That ends up being a 37-yard penalty.
00:57:56Moves the ball out to the 41.
00:58:04The rookie out of Pittsburgh State, who's played remarkably well,
00:58:08along with Garrison Hurst, carries the ball there.
00:58:11Week three in the NFL.
00:58:13Let's get you up to date on the action on our Russell Athletics scoreboard.
00:58:17How about the Eagles, 3-0?
00:58:19Giants as well.
00:58:20Dan Reeves has gone into the Big Apple and done a remarkable job.
00:58:24The 49ers with a win there.
00:58:27Saints didn't score as many points, but they got the win, 14-3.
00:58:34Second down and seven.
00:58:41Berline, far side.
00:58:43Clark had it for a moment, and Larry Brown jars it loose.
00:58:46The ball being fought for.
00:58:48Has that been ruled incomplete?
00:58:49It has.
00:58:50No fumble.
00:58:51Gary Clark did not have possession on the far side.
00:58:54Brown with a very good defensive effort again.
00:58:57He and Clark have really been going after each other.
00:59:00Larry Brown has been on Gary Clark like a cat on Velcro this entire first half.
00:59:08He has not had a chance.
00:59:10One of the things that Gary Clark can do is extend the play if you let him.
00:59:14But if you're right there when the ball arrives, nothing's going to happen.
00:59:18A good first half.
00:59:19Bill Cowher's team with their first victory.
00:59:21The Browns, 3-0.
00:59:24Gargers with Kearney having another big day.
00:59:26Six field goals.
00:59:29Third down and seven.
00:59:31Berline, fine touch to Derek Ware, and he dropped it.
00:59:36Derek Ware, who has the only catch among the tight end core for Phoenix,
00:59:41that being a 13-yarder last week, drops the ball.
00:59:45And if you're going to beat the Dallas Cowboys, you've got to make those kind of plays.
00:59:51You know, every Cardinal fan has seen the Cardinals do this before.
00:59:57Get themselves close, get in the big game, and then not make the plays.
01:00:01Look at Berline.
01:00:03I don't blame him.
01:00:04I don't blame him.
01:00:05That's a ball that should have been caught easily.
01:00:09Camarillo now punting away to Kevin Williams.
01:00:11He calls for the fair catch.
01:00:13He pummels the ball but gets it out of bounds, and so Dallas will have it.
01:00:17And, boy, I tell you, Williams has really had a tough time.
01:00:20He's had two fumbles on punts earlier.
01:00:23That's a 42-yard punt.
01:00:25And Berline is hot and has every reason to be so.
01:00:36Unbelievable.
01:00:37I mean, the guy caught it twice.
01:00:40All right, Gary.
01:00:41Now, don't get into this, Homer.
01:00:43It's both you and Tom.
01:00:44I see.
01:00:45Hey, you should see this thing up here, Peter.
01:00:47I mean, it is getting bad.
01:00:49It is getting bad.
01:00:50Bring in Skip or something here.
01:00:52These two guys, we're going to have to separate them.
01:00:58You've got to admit, that was a legitimate call.
01:01:02He had the whole thing of Berline when he went back over to the bench and threw his helmet again.
01:01:07Okay.
01:01:11Wow.
01:01:17Oh, man.
01:01:18Look at that.
01:01:19Is that live?
01:01:20I mean, are you taping this?
01:01:22That's great stuff.
01:01:24Go ahead and take it.
01:01:26You've been there.
01:01:27Oh, yeah.
01:01:28Wow.
01:01:30By the receiver.
01:01:36What are you coming out with?
01:01:38The tape piece.
01:01:39Where does it start?
01:01:40Can you see it?
01:01:41Can you show it to me?
01:01:46Would have been a first down.
01:01:4840.
01:01:53Good.
01:01:54Good.
01:01:55Boy, that's a great shot, guys.
01:01:58Pat's going to take it.
01:01:59I like it.
01:02:00Yeah.
01:02:01You Colorado guys.
01:02:02You lose.
01:02:03You just...
01:02:12Interesting exchange between Derrick Ware, the tight end who just dropped that pass a
01:02:16moment ago, and Steve Berline.
01:02:18And Berline trying to get him calmed down and saying, hey, you know what?
01:02:23But we may need you in the second half.
01:02:25We're going to need you in the second half.
01:02:27You may catch the game winner.
01:02:29So get back in the game.
01:02:31From the 15-yard line, Dallas will start this series.
01:02:34Aikman getting off to Lastic.
01:02:36And Lastic will get a yard, and that's all.
01:02:39One of the keys to this first half, although the Phoenix defense has played credibly, is
01:02:43they have not been able to put any pressure on the offense.
01:02:47Although the Phoenix defense has played credibly, is they have not been able to put any pressure
01:02:52really on Troy Aikman.
01:02:53He's gotten hit a couple of times after he's thrown the ball, but they really haven't forced
01:02:58him to really make something happen.
01:03:01He's had too much time.
01:03:02He's been able to spread the ball around between Harper and Irvin and Novacek and Johnston.
01:03:07All three sacks the Cardinals have this year came last week, and they were all by Ken Harvick.
01:03:13Second down, ten.
01:03:17Aikman to Johnston, the fullback.
01:03:20Johnston hit by Lynch, and he's going to be short of the first down.
01:03:24He's going to bring up a third down, two yards to go.
01:03:27One of the other keys to this game is that the Cowboys in the first two games turned
01:03:33the ball over eight times.
01:03:35Tonight, they don't have any turnovers.
01:03:37And Jimmy Johnson said to us yesterday, if we don't turn the ball over, we'll win every game.
01:03:42Any game we don't turn the ball over, we win.
01:03:44It's been kind of a methodical game that Dallas has played.
01:03:48They've just kept moving the football, distributing the ball so well.
01:03:52Third and two now.
01:03:53Thirty-eight seconds left in the half.
01:04:02That's it.
01:04:03Time to get outside.
01:04:04It'll be stopped.
01:04:05Phoenix ought to get the clock stopped, and they do.
01:04:07They call timeout with 23 seconds left.
01:04:10And so, Jett will have to come in and punt the football.
01:04:13Tyrone Stowe, number 90, again on the tackle.
01:04:16The middle linebacker, Joe Bugle, trying to get his troops fired up as the Cardinals with
01:04:22a golden opportunity here to step up and show they're a good football team.
01:04:27And thus far, nothing's happened.
01:04:36Yeah.
01:04:37Heads up for a punt block.
01:04:38He's had two punts blocked in the preseason.
01:04:42He did.
01:04:43You're exactly right.
01:04:44I heard that on the tape.
01:04:45I never saw it.
01:04:47Yeah.
01:04:48Well, we're going to, let's set this up here for a punt block.
01:04:50You're going to get a punt block look.
01:04:54Don't have one.
01:04:55Don't know.
01:04:56Don't know either.
01:04:57He heads up.
01:04:58Well, no, you don't know.
01:05:00He'll come right up the middle.
01:05:02Yeah, we only spent 17 hours and we didn't ask that question.
01:05:05It's number 31.
01:05:16Alfredo Roberts.
01:05:17Is that Alfredo?
01:05:21Is he hurt now or what?
01:05:22I don't know.
01:05:23I have the latest on him.
01:05:24He's always hurt.
01:05:26Well, they're going.
01:05:27They're going.
01:05:29Stop them, guys.
01:05:32Oh, no.
01:05:36How'd they do that?
01:05:45Why would you call for a fair catch there?
01:05:50I don't know.
01:05:51I don't know.
01:05:52I don't know.
01:05:53I don't know.
01:05:54I don't know.
01:05:56You want to come back and, you know.
01:06:0310-0 Dallas.
01:06:05John Jett gets the ball underway.
01:06:0748 yards.
01:06:09And Johnny Bailey makes a fair catch at the 29.
01:06:12And Phoenix will start there with only 15 seconds left in this first half.
01:06:17Two timeouts remaining.
01:06:19Well, you know, the Cowboys are 0-2.
01:06:21But Troy Aikman certainly tonight looks like he kind of picked up from where the, you know,
01:06:25the Super Bowl.
01:06:26He played the Super Bowl.
01:06:27And, you know, you think about the Cowboys.
01:06:29Everybody remembers how many points they scored.
01:06:31Those 52 points in the Super Bowl.
01:06:33You forget they kind of struggled in the year.
01:06:35They had a lot of close ballgames during the regular year.
01:06:38It was just when they got to the playoffs where they really had that surge largely because
01:06:43of the play of Alvin Harper.
01:06:45Jimmy Johnson said, if we win a ballgame, we'll get right back on track.
01:06:48And right now they're on their way to that.
01:06:51Look at Jimmy.
01:06:52His defense is a little bit like his hair.
01:06:54It's rarely moving tonight.
01:06:56You were asking about when he scuba dives, if it ever gets out of place.
01:07:00It's great.
01:07:01First down for Burlein.
01:07:05And Burlein then buried at the 25-yard line.
01:07:08He pulled it down.
01:07:09And John Roper, number 56, who they acquired from the Chicago Bears in a trade, was there.
01:07:15And they're going to use another timeout.
01:07:17Phoenix will have one remaining with eight seconds left in the half.
01:07:21You mentioned Aikman.
01:07:22He's 10 of 12, 154 yards.
01:07:25And this is not what Joe Bugle had in mind after that big win last week.
01:07:35Well, we're going to keep it right here as Bugle now with eight seconds.
01:07:39Not a lot he can do here.
01:07:40One timeout remaining.
01:07:41You know, so many times, Pat, and you've been in this athletically, where you mostly know
01:07:46how big a game is, but somehow just can't make things happen.
01:07:50Right now, you get the sense the cardinals maybe just are pressing again, like they were
01:07:54in the first game against Philadelphia.
01:07:56Well, you're right, because they've had a couple of nice drives, but it's either been
01:07:59a penalty.
01:08:00You know, they had a penalty on a nice drive and then a dropped ball by Derek Ware.
01:08:04You know, they just haven't been able to make it happen.
01:08:07You know, last week, their defense, the cardinal defense, made all the plays.
01:08:11They stopped Washington on a fourth and one.
01:08:13They made an interception in the end zone.
01:08:15They did some good things, but tonight, the cowboy offense has been incredibly efficient
01:08:20and turn it over.
01:08:21The cardinal offense hasn't made the plays when they've really needed them.
01:08:26Well, last week, they started out and just marched down the field against Washington.
01:08:30Didn't get in the end zone.
01:08:31Then they had a 58-yard punt return for a touchdown.
01:08:34They started quickly.
01:08:35Just haven't had that kind of fireworks here tonight.
01:08:39Well, one thing, Gary Clark, they're going to have to get the ball to Gary Clark out
01:08:43in the open field.
01:08:44Maybe get away from Larry Brown, who's really played him well, but in the second half, if
01:08:48the cardinals are going to come back, Gary Clark, one way or another, is going to have
01:08:52to figure it.
01:08:53Clark has one catch for two yards thus far to give you an idea how well Larry Brown has
01:08:58played him.
01:08:59Roger Reilly, our statistician, pointed that out.
01:09:01Now, Gary's been really slowed by a groin problem, and he's been nicked up.
01:09:06He didn't practice this week, but he called the cardinals, wanted to come here.
01:09:11He was the free agent signee and has given them some leadership.
01:09:20Well, after all that, they downed the ball, and we come to the end of this first half.
01:09:25Hate to see them do that when you're down by ten points in a home crowd.
01:09:28Throw it up there.
01:09:29Give the guys a chance.
01:09:30Jimmie Johnson's team with a 10-0 lead over Joe Bugle, and the cowboys have been very
01:09:36impressive.
01:09:37Halftime show coming up.
01:09:41We'll be right back.
01:09:48Welcome back to the Valley of the Sun.
01:09:50Dallas with a 10-0 lead in halftime.
01:09:52Here's tonight's Pittsburgh Paints game summary.
01:09:55The first drive was just precision as far as Dallas was concerned.
01:09:59Aikman did not miss a single shot.
