00:00And the Falcons will have the football first, so Jerry Glanville has to be pleased about this opportunity.
00:07Alton Montgomery and Tony Smith and Eric Pegram are spread out as the deep men.
00:12And Eddie Murray's kickoff is high and short.
00:16Coming down at the 7.
00:18Smith.
00:21Drop at the 13-yard line. Excellent coverage.
00:25Brock Marion the first to make the hit.
00:28And had plenty of help from his cowboy kickoff team teammates.
00:32Bobby Ebert comes on with a 61% passing completion rate.
00:36And he'll have Ken, Kennedy, Dukes, Hinton and Bob Whitfield.
00:40A line that has played very well in the last four weeks particularly.
00:43Just three sacks given up by this unit in the last four games after an 0-1-5 Falcons start.
00:48Pegram the running back.
00:50Ryzen, Haynes, Pritchard the three wide receivers.
00:52And Mitch Lyons the tight end.
00:54And of course they will frequently go to their four wide receiver red gun lineup.
01:02Goes down from the 19.
01:15Pegram met at the line.
01:17Drove Casillas back for a gain of two.
01:20Defensively the Cowboys.
01:23Charles Haley and Tony Tolbert on the ends.
01:25Maryland and Casillas the tackles.
01:27They have nine down linemen in uniform.
01:29And you can expect to see at least eight of them in action today.
01:33The linebackers because they're playing three and four wideouts against Atlanta.
01:38You're gonna see Smith and Norton as the two linebackers.
01:40And Kenneth Gant coming in as a nickel linebacker.
01:43Larry Brown, Kevin Smith on the corners.
01:45Everett and Darren Woodson the starting safeties.
01:50Seppi in eighth.
01:52Atlanta.
01:56Pegram, good hole.
01:59Pegram battles his way carrying Cowboys first down to the 35.
02:04Tim, that's exactly what I was just talking about prior to the game.
02:07Eric Pegram is no surprise to the players and coaches who have to go against him.
02:12He's a strong guy. He's a tough guy.
02:14He's got great feet in the hole.
02:16The Dallas Cowboys were very, very concerned with him.
02:19In fact, last night Jimmy Johnson told us that their big concern was having to tackle Eric Pegram.
02:25Pegram at 721 yards.
02:28Rushing did not become the starter until the third week of the season.
02:31Tony Smith the former number one in battling with Eric Dickerson at that time.
02:36But Pegram is the man.
02:38And he has stopped this time for little if any gain.
02:41Russell Merrill in the nose tackle number 67 making the hit.
02:46Tim, they come right out and they're running the football.
02:49And what they're saying to the Dallas defense is we're going to be here all day.
02:52This is going to be a long term deal.
02:54We're going to keep on pounding the ball and we want you to stop us.
02:57Now what Jimmy Johnson knows he has are guys who will run to the football.
03:01This is a defense that's built on team speed and they're going to have to use it today.
03:05And he brings in another runner in terms of James Washington replacing Darren Smith.
03:10Washington the safety replacing the linebacker on second and nine.
03:16And the shotgun A-Bear.
03:18Screen to Pegram.
03:20Caught from behind but he got about eight on the play.
03:23It was Tony Tolbert.
03:25Read the screen but had to chase Pegram and did a good job.
03:28And Pegram still picked up about an eight yard gain.
03:31Well the reason you're seeing a lot of the run game early which we're going to see all day long
03:35because the Falcons are committed to it.
03:37And a short passing game is right there Bobby A-Bear.
03:40Now Bobby A-Bear's right elbow is absolutely killing him.
03:44And I saw him the other day.
03:45I walked up to him and I just touched it.
03:47And he winced in pain.
03:48I spoke with him yesterday and he said look there's nothing I can do.
03:51I know I've got to play through the pain.
03:54He has a third and two.
03:57A-Bear just taking some oral painkillers before the games to try and alleviate some of that pain.
04:03Gets that pass off to Haynes.
04:05First down Falcons for the Dallas 48.
04:09A-Bear took a hit but he got that pass perfectly on the mark.
04:12Ken Norton made the tackle.
04:14Well Tim, the one thing that's not going to bother Bobby A-Bear is pressure.
04:18And he's going to get some pressure right off the side here off of Whitfield.
04:21Watch him come upside.
04:22Now throw him underneath.
04:23Come back.
04:24Now what A-Bear does very well is he knows he's been there before.
04:28He sees the whole picture and he's got the guts and toughness to stay in the pocket.
04:33Mitch Lyon just came in a tight end for Atlanta.
04:35Number 86 the rookie for Michigan State.
04:43Another screen to the left.
04:44Pegram.
04:45Nice cutting.
04:48Eric Pegram.
04:52First down to the 35 of Dallas.
04:55Thomas Everett got him there so they've just turned Pegram into a running back.
04:59He catches a little pass.
05:00He's really still a Narby.
05:01Yeah, now watch all this.
05:02This is a long handoff.
05:04It's going to come from A-Bear to the left side of your screen.
05:06The key blocker.
05:07This is a long handoff.
05:08It's going to come from A-Bear to the left side of your screen.
05:11The key blocker is going to be 78.
05:13Mike, Ken, watch.
05:14Right there.
05:15See that?
05:16Push him right out of the way.
05:17Now just turn it over to the strength of Pegram which is seeing everything and cutting back.
05:21Oh, and he turned Ken Norton right around with his cut.
05:23First down.
05:24Falcons opening drive at the Dallas 35.
05:34A-Bear for Drew Hill.
05:36Another Falcon first down to the 21-yard line.
05:40Tim, the Atlanta Falcons said what we cannot do, particularly on the first drive, is turn the ball over.
05:48The strength of this Dallas defense, as told to us by Jerry Glanville, is patience.
05:53They will patiently let you work down the field knowing that you are going to make an error sooner or later and that's when they'll capitalize.
06:02Washington comes in for Darren Smith again and this is A-Bear just after he released the last pass.
06:09He knows it hurts, Tim.
06:11That elbow is going to be talking to him all day long.
06:19He's got a man open and he hits him.
06:21Pritchard.
06:24Pritchard fights his way for an 8-yard gain.
06:26Ken Norton pulls him down.
06:28First down.
06:33Mike Pritchard, number 35, the wide receiver for the Falcons.
06:36It's funny, we talked to the defensive back of the Dallas Cowboys and they say, you know, we're always concerned about Haynes with his speed.
06:43We're concerned about the quickness of rise and all of a sudden you turn around and Mike Pritchard has picked up 7-8 catches.
06:49And he said it's almost, this is Kevin Smith speaking, the cornerback, he said it's almost like our offense.
06:53There's so many receivers out there, you kind of get lost in it.
06:59A-Bear 5-0-5 on this opening series.
07:03Second and two.
07:05Pegram.
07:06Hit behind the line by Norton and pulled back short of the first down.
07:11Ken Norton, the middle linebacker, slashing through the offensive line to make the hit.
07:17You know, this is funny for me because I can see Jerry Glanville right here.
07:20He just couldn't wait to finally get his little trap game in.
07:24Watch Chris Hinton.
07:25Gonna run his quick track game and bring him inside.
07:27Now Hinton will run by the block and Pegram will get tackled by Norton.
07:31Nice job by Norton in the middle of reading and stepping up.
07:35It leaves third and two.
07:40Jeffcoat, Jones, Hennings and Lett have all come in.
07:45A new down foursome for the Cowboys.
07:49A-Bear under pressure.
07:50Gets it off to Pegram.
07:51Pegram to the five and a first down.
07:55That was all Bobby A-Bear right there.
07:57Nice read by A-Bear.
07:59He saw the blitz coming.
08:00He's gonna be coming off the side.
08:02Now Pritchard also has the same read.
08:05He's gonna see people coming up inside.
08:07See this?
08:08Now get out on the side.
08:09Jeffcoat tries to hold on to him.
08:11Doesn't quite get there and A-Bear finds him.
08:13Watch Jeffcoat try to grab him.
08:15When you come with that inside blitz a lot of times
08:17you leave your defensive end in coverage on the back.
08:20Jeffcoat missed it with the grab but made the tackle.
08:24First and goal Atlanta.
08:26Six yard line of Dallas opening series.
08:46A-Bear forced out at the five.
08:49Jeffcoat chasing him.
08:52And Aaron Woodson.
08:53Yeah I'm sorry.
08:54That's where this new zone.
08:56It's not real new.
08:57It's relatively new as the flag is down.
09:00But what the Cowboys have done and what the league has gone to
09:03is once you get inside the 20 yard line
09:05you start to play a lot of zone defense.
09:09Illegal formation.
09:10Offense number 80.
09:13Not lined up on the line of scrimmage.
09:16Five yards.
09:17First down.
09:18Andre Rison is the man not lined up properly.
09:21Illegal formation.
09:22I mean you have to have an eligible receiver on the line of scrimmage
09:25if Rison wasn't there.
09:27What happens in that zone defense though Tim
09:29you're going to watch Rison at the top of your screen.
09:31See right up there?
09:32He's not on the line of scrimmage.
09:33It means this guy has to have an eligible number and he doesn't.
09:37So what happens in that zone defense
09:38the field is shrunk down
09:40and you can really match up your receivers
09:42and in the last play everybody who's matched up
09:44either had a run out of it.
09:48So it's first and goal from the 11.
09:53One setback.
09:55He has it.
09:56Cuts inside and gets to the 8 yard line.
09:59A pair of Cowboys stack him up led by Jeffcoat
10:03and Ken Norton
10:04and Chad Hennings in on him.
10:07That was Jim Jeffcoat.
10:08Jim Jeffcoat
10:09I couldn't have been happier for a guy to win a Super Bowl
10:11than Jim Jeffcoat last year.
10:13I went down to spoke to Jeffcoat
10:14he was so excited about just having the opportunity
10:17and he reflected back all the players
10:19who had gone through
10:20Hersel Walker who he was tight with
10:22and Eugene Lockhart who he was tight with
10:24who never had the opportunity to even get there
10:26and then all of a sudden he was there and he got his ring.
10:29A number one pick back in 83
10:31in his 11th year.
10:35Second down and goal.
10:38He barely gets time
10:40and now just throws it away.
10:42Good decision.
10:44Good coverage again by the Cowboys
10:46and that shrunken zone as you described it
10:49creating problems again.
10:50Good coverage by the Cowboys.
10:51Yeah you shrink it up and you get people like Kenneth Gant
10:53matched up in that zone
10:54and it's hard to find an open receiver.
10:56And so what has to happen down here with these things
10:58is you really start to go to secondary receivers
11:00or really isolating one guy
11:02and flooding the zone
11:04and making sure you have good coverage.
11:06Flooding the zone and making sure you have blockers
11:08in front of them to get in.
11:1313th play of this drive.
11:15This is the opening series.
11:17Third and goal now from the 8-yard line.
11:19David Mims in for Pritchard
11:21at a wide receiver position.
11:23Lined up with Hill in the slot right.
11:29A-bear and intended for low.
11:32Incomplete.
11:34Thomas Everett sitting right in the middle of that zone.
11:36They went zone all around.
11:38They matched it up once they came in.
11:40Everett was sitting right in the middle of the zone
11:42and just lowered the boom.
11:45Washington had the coverage on Mims
11:48and Risen was running free
11:50but the ball sailed a little on A-bear.
11:53So Johnson will come in for the field goal try.
11:56He has 22 consecutive field goals.
11:5917 of them this season.
12:01He hasn't missed.
12:02The only kicker in the league
12:03who hasn't missed a field goal or a P.A.T. this season.
12:07And the ball spotted at the 11.
12:12And make it number 23 in a row for Norm Johnson.
12:15And a brilliant opening series for the Atlanta Falcons.
12:18They lead 3-0.
12:231993.
12:25Caught at the 21-yard line
12:27and fair caught there
12:29by Tim Daniel.
12:32That jacket, one of the offensive linemen.
12:34We'll be back in Atlanta in a moment.
12:38At the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, 3-0.
12:40The Falcons lead the Cowboys
12:41and it was defensive lineman Matt Vanderbeek
12:43who got to catch the kickoff,
12:45the short kickoff from Johnson.
12:47And Bernie Kosar brings on the
12:50Dallas Cowboy offense.
12:5113 of 21 last week
12:53in his first game ever as a Cowboy
12:54on just three practices.
12:56Defeating Phoenix
12:58and playing a brilliant game
13:00with somebody who had to absorb so much
13:01in such a short amount of time.
13:03Troy Aikman continues on the sideline
13:05but in uniform today
13:07with his hamstring injury.
13:11Kosar pumps once and goes deep.
13:13Both receiver and defender stumble.
13:16Alvin Harper stumbled
13:18against Darnell Walker, the rookie, number 45.
13:21And then Walker fell down.
13:23Well, Tim, it's no surprise
13:25that they're going to go right after the rookie.
13:27Watch Alvin Harper, number 80,
13:29and he just turned into a foot race.
13:31The ball's in the air
13:32and they just get tangled right there.
13:34There goes Walker.
13:35There goes Harper.
13:36North Turner, the offensive coordinator
13:38of the Dallas Cowboys, says,
13:40look, I love this matchup.
13:42I think Harper can win it
13:43and we're going to go into it early and often.
13:47Second and 10, Dallas.
13:50Number 23.
13:53Emmitt Smith is smashed at the line of scrimmage.
13:56He's got only a yard.
13:59First contact by Lester Archambault.
14:01Two and a.
14:02Newton, Stepnoski, Gogan, and Eric Williams,
14:05the offensive line,
14:06having an outstanding year
14:08for the champion Cowboys.
14:10Emmitt Smith, the running back.
14:11Darrell Johnston, the fine fullback.
14:13Irvin, Harper, the wide receivers.
14:15Jane Novacek, the tight end.
14:20A gain of a yard, at least 39 for Dallas.
14:23Three wide receivers.
14:24Kevin Williams joining Harper and Irvin.
14:29Two and a.
14:35Flags are down.
14:39A probable false start.
14:41False start before the snap.
14:43Number 79, Huffman.
14:45Five yards, third down.
14:48Eric Williams pulling back too soon.
14:51Now again, we'll be watching those snap count things
14:54with the new quarterback, Kosar.
14:55Archambault, Gardner, Pierce Holt, Mel Agee.
14:58They've got two new defensive ends there
15:00for the injured Mike Gann and Rick Bryan.
15:02Archambault and Mel Agee.
15:04Ron George takes over Darion Conner's spot
15:07at linebacker today with Jesse Tuggle and Jesse Solomon.
15:10In the secondary, Sanders and the rookie Walker
15:13on the corners.
15:14Another rookie, Roger Harper,
15:15the strong safety with the veteran's top kicks.
15:19Jumpy Gethers and Chuck Smith come in now
15:21on the passing down, third and 14.
15:25Pressure on Kosar.
15:26Kosar gets it up, and it's caught by Emmitt Smith,
15:29but he is hit immediately.
15:36Well, Norm Turner elects to go with the bomb
15:38in the first play.
15:39Then the third play, when they go to the pass,
15:41they take Chuck Smith's pressure,
15:43and they see it coming right into the face.
15:45They miss the bump of Emmitt Smith,
15:47so they throw it right out there.
15:48It's almost a hot read by Kosar.
15:51Kosar took a good lick from Chuck Smith,
15:54a fast-brushing specialist,
15:56second-year man from Tennessee.
15:58John Jett standing at his five-yard line.
16:01Tony Smith waiting for it at the 35 of Atlanta.
16:08Nearly blocked by Tiffens.
16:16Good coverage by the Cowboys,
16:18holding Smith for a gain of a couple.
16:20Van Der Beek made the tackle.
16:22A 49-yard punt by Jett.
16:31First down, Falcons, a lead 3-0.
16:33They're starting at their 34-yard line,
16:35following the Dallas punt.
16:43Play action, and a naked boot by Hebert,
16:46and he didn't get much there.
16:48Knocked out at the 35-yard line by Darren Woodson.
16:52Green Bay quickly on top of Detroit,
16:5510 to zip.
16:56That's a surprise.
16:57Packed with a bunch of key players out today, too.
17:00Bears and Kansas City still scored this.
17:02Indianapolis on top of Buffalo.
17:04First quarter.
17:08So the field goal kickers are out in force here
17:10in the early action in the NFL today.
17:12Those scores would indicate no gain on the play.
17:16Means Washington comes in.
17:18The linebacker, Darren Smith, goes out for Dallas.
17:21Second and 10.
17:27Play action again, and open in the middle is Drew Hill.
17:30He picks up close to 8.
17:32Tim, if you're going to pay attention to the passing game
17:35today as Hebert's looking at his elbow again,
17:37if you're paying attention to the pass game of the Atlanta Falcons,
17:40you're going to have to be careful.
17:42If you're paying attention to the pass game of the Atlanta Falcons,
17:45really, we're going to look only for 15 yards.
17:47That's it.
17:49They're going to try to throw the ball deep
17:51just to let Dallas know that they can do it,
17:54but it's going to be too painful for Bobby Hebert,
17:56so all of his passing really should be within a 15-yard zone.
18:00Every pass is painful for Hebert.
18:02That doesn't make any difference to him.
18:04His only judgment really is whether or not he can get the ball there.
18:08If he's throwing badly, he said he'll be the first one to take himself out.
18:12So far, so good for Hebert and the Falcons.
18:17And he is eluding the sack.
18:20Finds an open man, rising first down.
18:23Oh, Bobby Hebert is on a roll.
18:25He's on a sideline.
18:27Bobby Hebert, the special teams coached him out.
18:29He pats him on the back, jumping all over the place.
18:31This was all feet of Bobby Hebert.
18:34Tony Tolbert beats Whitfield to the corner.
18:37You're going to see him come up, go with the arm, under.
18:40Get to the top shoulder.
18:42And right to the top. Now he has them feet.
18:44Whitfield does a good job of coming back, getting his hands on him,
18:47but it's all Hebert as he keeps his balance.
18:49Finds rising in the middle of the defense, first down.
18:52At the 49-yard line of Atlanta,
18:55few quarterbacks in the league are any better at seeing and feeling the rush.
18:59And then he has what a lot of you guys like to call escapability.
19:04I never called it that.
19:06First down.
19:08And Biegrund picks up two yards on the left side,
19:11leaving a second and eight.
19:13Maryland and Woodson grab him.
19:15When a guy did that, I just said he was a lucky stiff.
19:18Bobby Hebert was a lucky stiff on that last play
19:21because Tolbert should have had a sack.
19:23This guy is not a lucky stiff.
19:26Bobby Hebert is one courageous guy.
19:28I mean, he's kind of like the cowardly lion on the Wizard of Oz.
19:31You know, why does the muskrat guard his musk? Courage.
19:34Bobby Hebert standing there, keep throwing with that elbow, all courage.
19:39He's at midfield now.
19:42Just over the stripe in Dallas territory.
19:47Pressure again, got it off once again, and Biegrund couldn't haul it in.
19:52Tolbert got a lick on Hebert on that play.
19:56Tim Tolbert is schooling Bob Whitfield right now.
19:59What he did, he came up the last two pass rushes,
20:02right to the top shoulder, and he tried to get the pass rush over the top,
20:06and he got there, and this time, he decided to take the step upfield,
20:10have him bite, then duck back underneath inside.
20:13He beat him again.
20:14Whitfield, the number one pick a year ago from Stanford,
20:17and projected himself as an all-pro in this league,
20:21but he is still clearly being taught some lessons by the 50-year-old Tony Tolbert.
20:26Bill Bates into the lineup now for Dallas defensively on third down.
20:31Hebert up the middle, and it is caught.
20:34Michael Haynes for a first down Atlanta.
20:37Great job by Hebert, great job by Tony Tolbert,
20:40poor job by Bob Whitfield again.
20:42Pressure all over Hebert from Tolbert, who is really playing well early,
20:47but watch the eyes of Bobby Hebert.
20:49He knows where he wants to go.
20:50See the concentration?
20:51He never sees Tolbert.
20:53All he sees is the receiver with Haynes, and that's a first down.
20:57Haynes going up over Kevin Smith to make an outstanding catch,
21:01and Atlanta continuing to move the ball effectively.
21:04Second consecutive series, and they're now at the Dallas 36-yard line.
21:17Haynes, flanker screen, away from one tackler, and he picks up about eight.
21:23Oh, Tim, Jude Jones, the offensive coordinator for the Falcons, is on a roll.
21:27I mean, he is all over this Dallas defense.
21:30Yeah, he faked to the left, came back, throw the screen to Haynes on the right.
21:35What you do is just try to get that whole defense moving over,
21:38then come back.
21:39Jude Jones right now is hot.
21:42Haynes, Washington made the tackle, and a good one,
21:44and we have reached the end of the first quarter with the score.
21:48At the end of Falcons three, the Dallas Cowboys nothing.
22:00He's been grinding it out on two consecutive possessions.
22:10Sidelines are complete.
22:12Michael Haynes again.
22:14Kevin Smith on the coverage and the tackle, a gain of about four.
22:18Tim, but the Dallas defense, though, does very, very well,
22:21because they have great patience.
22:23Jimmy Johnson knows that what the Falcons are trying to do right now
22:26in this short passing game is drama.
22:28Start to press, start bringing everybody up,
22:31and then that's when Hebert will try to take his shot downfield.
22:39First down at the 22-yard line.
22:44Hebert.
22:51Pegram.
22:53Cutting it back in, gets five.
22:56Chad Hennings, the second-year man from Air Force,
22:59number 95 made the tackle.
23:01Jeff Coat, Jimmy Jones, Chad Hennings, and Leon Lett,
23:04the defensive front now.
23:06Twice Dallas has brought them in near the red zone,
23:09replacing the starting four.
23:12What impresses me most about Eric Pegram
23:14is the fact that we played them two years ago.
23:17First of all, he was number 41, and he looked slow.
23:19Second of all, they used him only as a drawback.
23:23This year, they've expanded his role, and he is the man.
23:26They give him just a three-yard pickup at his second and seventh.
23:33Again, Pegram, inside handoff.
23:36Gets another three or four before Leon Lett wraps him up.
23:40Help from Ken Norton.
23:42Leon Lett right there.
23:43That's a big-time player for this Dallas Cowboy team.
23:46If the Dallas Cowboys are going to have the kind of season
23:49they want with another Super Bowl,
23:51Leon Lett has to get healthy and has to play.
23:54When I speak with Charles Haley about Leon Lett,
23:57he said, this guy's got all kinds of talent,
23:59but, boy, I really want him to get mean.
24:02He's not mean enough for this.
24:05He's not mean like me, Haley.
24:07He's just not mean enough.
24:09He's been bothered by an ankle injury, and it's still troubling him.
24:13Eleventh play of this second drive.
24:17On third down, Hebert gets some time,
24:19and he's got Drew Hill first down and goal, Atlanta,
24:23at the 7 of Dallas.
24:25Again, it's Gant pushed him out.
24:27The whole key to this game so far has been third-down conversion for Atlanta.
24:32Atlanta right now is 5 out of 6 on third down,
24:35and in this league, that's where games are won and lost.
24:38If they continue this, this will be a win for the Atlanta Falcons.
24:44Now Tolbert, Casillas, Maryland, and Haley,
24:47the four starting down linemen, have come in on first and goal at the 6.
24:55And you might have to tell Jimmy Johnson how to talk to the Wizard of Oz
24:58in order to stop these Falcons.
25:00That's right.
25:07Nice closing of the ball by Darren Woodson.
25:11Big hit on Pritchard.
25:12Pritchard could smell that goal line.
25:14He was right at the goal line,
25:16and it looked like he tried to leap in before he actually had the ball on his hands.
25:20Well, he could see the ball, but he could also see Woodson coming right for his face.
25:24Now, see the ball's in front of him as is Woodson, so he's got to make a choice.
25:28He tried to do both at the same time, and Woodson makes a good play.
25:32Second and goal, Falcons.
25:35That Darren Woodson, he can play.
25:36That's a good football player.
25:38Woodson, the second-year man from Arizona State.
25:40He was their number two pick last year.
25:50Hebert trying to find somebody, and it almost intercepted in the end zone.
25:55Kevin Smith fielded it.
26:02Had the heat on.
26:03Hey, Baron, there is a flag down.
26:09Illegal man downfield.
26:13So, twice now, the Falcons have gotten in here deep.
26:16First series, they settled for the field goal after an impressive opening drive.
26:20And now they're backed up again here on the second offensive series
26:24that has taken them deep into Dallas territory.
26:26Ineligible downfield on the pass.
26:28Number 70 in the offense.
26:30The penalty is declined.
26:32Third down.
26:33Matt, that's a tough situation.
26:34Bob Whitfield, he sees Hebert starting to roll out there,
26:37thinking maybe he's going to run.
26:38He moves, and he gets nailed.
26:41Yeah, you see him right at the top.
26:42Now, he's going to start to roll.
26:44When he starts to roll, he thinks he has the time.
26:46Throw him down.
26:47Now turn and get upfield.
26:50And here he comes.
26:52And they caught him downfield.
26:53You know what?
26:54Bob McAlee, the referee, gives that signal when he pats himself
26:57when headed to the one-of-two base.
26:59Either it's an ineligible man downfield or his hat's coming off
27:02and he has to get it back on.
27:05Third and goal.
27:12They give him time to fade.
27:14Games broken up by Kevin Smith.
27:17Nice play by Kevin Smith.
27:19His back is to the ball.
27:21The only gauge he has that the ball is coming is the receiver's eyes.
27:26Now, good man-to-man coverage.
27:29You don't look for the ball until the receiver looks for the ball.
27:32See that?
27:33All he has is Haynes looking to the ball,
27:35and that's when he knows to put his hands up in the air.
27:39Hebert doesn't like it because he thinks it's interference.
27:42It's not interference.
27:44But the old rule used to be that you couldn't raise your hand
27:47without looking at the ball.
27:49Face start.
27:51The field goal drive, 24 yards out.
27:54And he nails another one, 24 in a row for Norm Johnson at Atlanta.
28:01Continues to lead Dallas, 12-0, one to go in the half.
28:04It is 6-0.
28:08Trailing 6-0 on a pair of Norm Johnson field goals.
28:13Kevin Williams brings it out from the goal line,
28:15and he's dropped at the 12 by a swarm of Falcons.
28:24Alton Montgomery down there at the bottom with Tracy Eaton
28:27and a whole lot of help.
28:32A pizza hunt.
28:34Tim Ryan with Matt Millen at the Georgia Dome.
28:37Norm Johnson's two field goals, 24 in a row for him.
28:406-0 lead for the Falcons, and twice they got inside the 20.
28:46And just moments ago, out on the field, I've never seen that.
28:49That is Evander Holyfield, the heavyweight champion of the world.
28:51His great victory over Riddick Bowe.
28:53Of course, he's an Atlantic guy.
28:54They love him here.
28:55They gave him a warm welcome, and he ran out onto the field.
28:58We're in the timeout to be acknowledged right out there on the 50-yard line.
29:02All right.
29:04Cowboys starting from their 13-yard line.
29:08Falcons stuffed him the first time around.
29:14Kosar for Harper, and Harper, close to the marker, may have a first down.
29:20There's the matchup again.
29:21Alvin Harper working against Darnell Walker, number 45.
29:24Now he's in zone, but what you're going to see at the end is something that scares Jerry Glanville.
29:30Watch 45 right here, the rookie, and his help is coming from another rookie inside right there, Harper, number 47.
29:37Now, Jerry Glanville says nothing drives him more crazy in the whole wide world than to play a rookie at safety.
29:44That's Roger Harper out of Ohio State, their number 2 pick.
29:48He's going to be an outstanding player, but makes him a little nervous, especially on third downs.
29:52In fact, he tries to get him out.
29:54Walker, meanwhile, playing with a knee injury.
29:56Not sure how far he can go.
29:59First down, Dallas.
30:00Kosar rolling.
30:01Intended for Novacek, the tight end, incomplete.
30:05Solomon had the coverage.
30:06Yeah, coverage there on Novacek, and they went man to man,
30:09and there is a great matchup of Michael Irvin, 88, on 21, Deion Sanders.
30:14And this is a matchup that the Atlanta Falcons think they can win.
30:18Deion Sanders has tremendous speed, but he will have trouble against the big body of Michael Irvin,
30:25who really likes to play like a basketball player out there.
30:27Irvin's not slow, Tim, but what he does is what you do well under the hoop.
30:31Hey, the ball's in the air, you position yourself, and that's exactly what Irvin likes to do.
30:36Use his body for position.
30:38Those guys are very good friends, and real fierce rivals.
30:43Second and ten.
30:45Kosar goes to the left for Smith, off target.
30:56Emmitt Smith flaring out to the left.
30:59Kosar looking right, coming back the other way, and just missed him.
31:022 of 5.
31:03Yeah, 2 of 5, and this is what the Atlanta Falcons defensive people,
31:06Doug Shively and Jerry Glanville, wanted to have happen.
31:09If they could get them in a position where they could be one-dimensional,
31:13have to throw, they're on third down, and we can bring pressure on Bernie Kosar,
31:17then we have a chance.
31:19South Pierce hold the outstanding tackle.
31:21It came over from San Francisco.
31:23Jumping gathers, and Chuck Smith will come in on this third and long,
31:26to aid in the rush.
31:31Kosar gets it off.
31:35Not much.
31:36Jesse Tuggle.
31:39Tim, I'll tell you what.
31:40Jumping gathers number 97 was unbelievable.
31:43He took 330-pound Nate Newton right here,
31:46and he just picks him up.
31:48Look at this.
31:49He just picks him up and takes him right back to the quarterback.
31:52No one does that to Nate Newton except jumping gathers.
31:58So now the Falcons again stopping the Cowboys.
32:01Two consecutive series, they'll get the ball back.
32:0410-37 and counting down.
32:06First half, and a 6-0 Falcon lead.
32:08Tony Smith awaits the punt from John Jett.
32:16Jett hits it from the 20.
32:18Hits it to Andy.
32:20Smith from the 19.
32:25Gets to the 26-yard line.
32:29Kenneth Gant with an ankle grab,
32:31and a flag on the play.
32:35Brought a rather injured player down.
32:38That's also Kenneth Gant.
32:40And the flag is back in the line of scrimmage.
32:42Kenneth Gant's laying down there,
32:44a little bit shaken up,
32:46but he just made an outstanding play on the special team.
32:50Host possession foul,
32:52number 22 of the receivers holding.
32:55The receivers will keep the ball
32:57after penalty for their foul.
32:59First down.
33:00Timeout.
33:02We'll be back at the Georgia Dome in a moment.
33:08So important.
33:09The first thing you gotta do is have a plan.
33:11Now Kenneth Gant's 29th plan was to work outside.
33:14Then you have your speed.
33:15Most important in special teams,
33:17it's alright to get blocked.
33:18Don't stay blocked.
33:20Kenneth Gant doesn't stay blocked and makes the tackle.
33:23He's being attended to on the sideline.
33:25He saw him land on his shoulder and arm over there.
33:28And he's quite a character.
33:29We'll come back with more on Kenneth Gant.
33:33First down at the nine-yard line.
33:35Atlanta.
33:36Pegram
33:37picks his way for about three
33:39out to the 13.
33:42Russell Maryland made the stop.
33:496-0 Atlanta lead
33:51with 10-0-1 to go in the first half.
33:53Eric Pegram, the third-year man from North Texas State,
33:56drafted in the sixth round in 1991.
33:59Had big names ahead of him.
34:00Steve Broussard, the number-one pick.
34:02Now a wide receiver primarily here.
34:04Tony Smith, the number-one pick last year.
34:06But it's Pegram,
34:08who has developed into the Falcons' running back.
34:11Closing in on a thousand-yard season.
34:157-9-6.
34:17Pegram again trying to get wide.
34:19No, it's a reverse.
34:20Great catch.
34:21And it's Pritchard.
34:23What? Fool me, Bobby.
34:25Yeah, well, fool Bobby, too,
34:27because he put a little bit too much mustard on that thing.
34:29And Pritchard had to go up and make a really good catch
34:32high in the air.
34:33And when he came down,
34:35he lost where he was on the field.
34:37Now watch.
34:38They're going to fake to Pegram.
34:39Now come back out.
34:40He gets the whole defense drawn over.
34:42Wide open.
34:43Take your choice.
34:44See the nice catch.
34:45Now watch at the end of this.
34:46See?
34:47Bobby Hebert knew too much mustard.
34:49That could have been a huge play.
34:52Turned out to be pretty good.
34:54Hebert's down out at the 39-yard line
34:56as Pritchard was wide open,
34:58alert enough to get back on his feet.
35:00Beautiful fake to Eric Pegram
35:03drawing Dallas to the near side.
35:07Pegram shakes out of the tackles and blocks
35:10and picks up about three.
35:12Got away from Tony Tolbert
35:14and a couple of his own blockers.
35:16Yeah, well, Tim, I've got to tell you this right now.
35:18Eric Pegram is the only reason
35:20that that last play with the fake worked.
35:22Because if you don't respect Eric Pegram,
35:24you don't have any kind of a play-action game.
35:26So they fake him going across the backfield.
35:28You know with Eric Pegram,
35:29you have to have a lot of guys there to tackle him.
35:32And when they do that,
35:33they fake it, come out, and make the big pass play.
35:39Second along six.
35:43Atlanta 41-yard line.
35:45Falcons leading Dallas 6-0.
35:47You can join us along the way.
35:48A pair of field goals on their first two offensive series.
35:51They have dominated this game.
35:53Heave, circus catch.
35:55Is he inbounds?
35:56Yes, that's a catch.
35:57And see what happened is Smith,
36:00he's coming down and Smith pushes him.
36:02So you have to mark where he would have come down.
36:07Boy, what a nice effort right here by Michael Hayes.
36:09Watch him go up for the ball.
36:11Foot's coming down.
36:12Now he's pushed.
36:13See, now once he's pushed,
36:15that means that he would have had his feet established inbounds.
36:18Therefore, the catch is good.
36:21Ergo, the catch is good.
36:23Very good, Matt.
36:24Ergo along with the Iliad and the Odyssey.
36:26Yes, sir.
36:27I'm on a roll.
36:28Maybe even a bagel.
36:29I want to come back to the Wizard of Oz
36:30about the muskrat at some point here, too.
36:32First down.
36:33First down, Atlanta.
36:35At the 44-yard line of Dallas.
36:39Hegram wrapped up after a game of only a couple.
36:42Ken Norton leading the charge for an NFL update.
36:45Let's go to Greg Gumbel in New York.
36:47All right, Tim, in Kansas City,
36:49a 40-yard pass interference call against the Bears
36:52sets up Marcus Allen,
36:53second touchdown of the day, an 8-yard run,
36:56107 for his great career.
36:58The Chiefs lead the Bears 14-0 in the second.
37:00Tim?
37:01Thank you, Greg.
37:02Marcus Allen can't play anymore.
37:04You know that.
37:05He got a life over there in Kansas City, didn't he?
37:07He had a life before he left.
37:09I don't know why they got rid of him.
37:11Second and 8.
37:13Atlanta driving again on the Cowboys
37:15at the Dallas 42-yard line.
37:19Hut, hut!
37:24Hebert down the sideline for Haynes.
37:27Oh, incomplete.
37:29I'll bet you Bobby Hebert would like to have that one back.
37:32And he took a chance going up with it,
37:35but he had Pritchard for the first down
37:37and pretty good yardage underneath him.
37:40Again, Tim, let me reiterate,
37:42that only works because Eric Hegram is on a roll.
37:47Watch right at the end, Bobby Hebert lets go of the ball,
37:50and then he's got to work on his footwork.
37:53One of those line markers got up and tripped him.
37:56Not a bad backflip, though, right in front of the Dallas bench.
38:00I'll tell you this right now about Bobby Hebert,
38:02with the success they're having,
38:04his elbow does not hurt as much.
38:09We've got a timeout on the field.
38:16Yes.
38:18Hebert for Rison to the 25 of Dallas first down.
38:23Well, you know, you have a couple of wrinkles
38:27with roll outs and stuff,
38:29but you always come back to the strength of your quarterback,
38:31and this is it.
38:32Now, this is a pocket passer.
38:33Watch the pocket about.
38:34Look at it.
38:35All kinds of time.
38:36Stand in there, step, throw off the front foot.
38:39Andre Rison goes down, reads the zone.
38:42Now, when you play zone, you run always in the gray areas,
38:45and the gray areas are just in between the players.
38:48Nicely done.
38:51Andre Rison with 53 catches coming into this game
38:54and 10 touchdowns.
38:56He's still a go-to guy.
38:5811 first downs to one for Dallas.
39:04Hebert gets time, and he finds Rison.
39:07Hey, Andre Rison put a nice move on Brown.
39:11And a nice little push, too.
39:13Perfectly executed.
39:14That's one of the moves.
39:15And it's never a penalty until it's called.
39:18Watch Andre Rison work on Brown.
39:20He's going to take him, drive him upfield.
39:22Now, get the little push, get the arm out,
39:24and the little elbow.
39:25See that?
39:26That's called separation.
39:27It's also called the first down.
39:30Mike Ken has come out of the offensive line
39:33to be replaced by Roman Fortin.
39:36Veteran tackle.
39:37We'll see if he's troubled by any number of injuries
39:40that he's had over the course of the season.
39:42He's a gamer.
39:43First down at the 14-yard line of Dallas.
39:48Hegram, nowhere to run.
39:49Norton meets him in the hole.
39:52Maybe a yard.
39:54Hebert, 15 of 22, 171 yards in this first half.
40:00Yeah, Tim, look at this, though.
40:02Look at the yardage.
40:03Look at 73, 60, 78.
40:05And here's the key, though, only six points.
40:07That means, with the Dallas offense
40:09only having one first down,
40:11it only takes one play, and they're right back in this.
40:13So that's a concern for the Atlanta Falcons.
40:16Atlanta stealing the clock from Dallas in this first half.
40:32Intended for Haynes, incomplete.
40:36Coverage by Thomas Everett.
40:40Mike, Ken has returned to the offensive line of Atlanta.
40:44Fortin comes out.
40:46Roman Fortin should get a big high mark right there
40:49for blocking Tony Tolbert,
40:51because what you had was, again, watch the strength here.
40:54He's the pocket passer.
40:55Watch the pocket develop.
40:57Fortin, 65.
40:58Just put the clamps on Tony Tolbert.
41:00Didn't allow him to get in.
41:01Gave Hebert lots of time.
41:03Couldn't get the throw in.
41:04That's when Bill Bates into the secondary for Dallas
41:07on 3rd and 10, Atlanta.
41:16Goal!
41:17Pitcher touchdown!
41:28And June Jones could not have drawn that up any better.
41:32Let's go to the sequence.
41:34First of all, Dallas comes with a blitz
41:36off the left side of Bobby Hebert.
41:38Instinctively, he rolls to his right.
41:40Now he finds his intended receiver, 35, Pritchard,
41:44who's very well covered right here.
41:46Great coverage by Woodson.
41:48Woodson goes for the pick.
41:50The concentration by Pritchard.
41:52Six points, Atlanta Falcons.
41:54Perfect pass, beautiful catch.
41:57Atlanta beating up on Dallas.
42:0513.
42:06Good boy.
42:07Got that.
42:17...in a row atop the NFC East,
42:18but only a game ahead of the Giants.
42:20Play later against the Heat.
42:22Kevin Williams from the 5.
42:24Williams, good return to the 24-yard line.
42:28Let's go back and see the touchdown.
42:30Hebert to Pritchard.
42:31Yeah, well, they caught him in man-to-man.
42:32They're gonna bring the safety.
42:33They're locked up in man all over the board.
42:36Now, what you have to remember about this,
42:38as they bring the safety,
42:39Hebert will do his half the roll.
42:40See that?
42:41Now, this is why it's important for a receiver
42:43to always run out to route.
42:44Look up here.
42:45Haynes drove his defender
42:47all the way into the corner of the end zone,
42:49and by knowing it's man-to-man,
42:51Pritchard has a lot of field to work with.
42:53Darren Woodson, rather, goes for the interception.
42:56Can't get it.
42:57Six points.
43:00That's good coverage by Woodson, incidentally.
43:02He just took a chance, and it didn't work out.
43:04First down, Dallas, at their own 25-yard line.
43:08Play action.
43:09Kosar, sideline.
43:11Incomplete.
43:13And it was Darnell Walker on Alvin Harper
43:16knocking that ball loose.
43:18Did you see it at the end of that play?
43:20The defensive coordinator ran out into the field
43:23and was giving him high-fives,
43:24slapping him into the head.
43:26This is a good matchup we talked about earlier.
43:28Watch the rookie.
43:29Watch him driving the ball.
43:31See?
43:32Very, very nicely done.
43:34Walker, who's 5'8", 165-pound Navy,
43:38against Harper, who's 6'3", 205-pounder.
43:43And that's the matchup that Dallas
43:45expected to do some business with,
43:47but he's a feisty kid.
43:48He's got three interceptions.
43:50A rookie out of Oklahoma.
43:52Second and ten.
43:54Bit of a flare-out for Emmitt Smith.
43:57Smith ridden out of bounds by Harper.
43:59Got about three, maybe four.
44:04Kenneth Gant, meanwhile, injured on that
44:08last play prior to this Dallas series
44:11and is being taken down to the locker room.
44:1325 minutes into this game,
44:16and the Dallas Cowboys have won first down.
44:19They have not gotten into sync.
44:22This Atlanta defense has been all over them.
44:25Everything they've wanted to do has worked.
44:27This is a big down right now for the Dallas Cowboys.
44:43Darnell Walker wrapping up Emmitt Smith.
44:46For no gain, there is a flag on the play
44:49and it appears to be against Dallas.
44:51And that'll be declined because Darnell Walker
44:54has met the challenge today.
44:57Number 79 offense.
44:59That penalty is declined for a foul.
45:04Deion Sanders doing the cheerleading.
45:07He's also doing the covering.
45:09They have not tried him today.
45:11Michael Irvin.
45:13I'm thinking if I'm a Dallas Cowboy,
45:15I don't care who's matching up on Michael Irvin.
45:17He's the guy who'll make something happen.
45:18Let's get the ball in his hands.
45:21Atlanta's rush.
45:23Not giving Kosar a chance to get it
45:25to anybody downfield so far.
45:28Jeff.
45:29Hits it to Dallas.
45:31And the 17 nearly blocked again by Tippins.
45:34It's a mistake by Tony Smith.
45:37Dallas rolled it.
45:38Tony Smith will be dropped at the 11-yard line.
45:41Tim, if you're a returner in the National Football League,
45:44don't let the ball hit the ground.
45:46Get up there and you make the catch
45:48because you just lost yourself
45:5025 yards of field position.
45:52Vanderbeek made the tackle on him there.
45:56Bobby April, the special teams coach,
45:58is not a happy camper.
46:00He knows that ball's in the air
46:02and you're a returner.
46:03You've got to get under it and make the catch.
46:05Fair catch if you have to,
46:06but don't let it roll like that.
46:08They had a near block by Tippins
46:10who twice has come very close.
46:12Instead it turns into a Dallas
46:16Good punt.
46:17All the way down close to the 11
46:19as Smith let it go by.
46:22So the Falcons will start from there.
46:24Up 13 to nothing here with 315 remaining.
46:28First half.
46:30Game Bearer 17 of 25, 195 yards
46:34and a touchdown on the Pritchard.
46:37Atlanta has had the ball for 21 minutes
46:39and 27 seconds of this first half.
46:45Hit it!
46:50Heat run.
46:53Nearly four.
46:54Well, Leon Lett and Everett made the tackle.
47:00Well, join us on Thanksgiving Day
47:02as CBS Sports will bring you
47:04an NFC Central matchup,
47:06the Bears and the Lions.
47:08Traditional game in Detroit,
47:09the NFL's leading rusher, Barry Sanders.
47:11Matt Summerall and John Maddow
47:13will call the action from the Silver Dome
47:15and our special holiday coverage
47:16begins with the NFL Today
47:18at 12 Eastern Time.
47:21Well, we are live in Atlanta, Georgia.
47:23You're looking at the Georgia Dome.
47:25Saturday Super Bowl coming up in January.
47:28Second and seven.
47:30Falcons.
47:32Hegram's got room on the corner.
47:34Good reaction by the Cowboys.
47:36Marion.
47:38Brock Marion, the rookie from Nevada, Reno.
47:42He was in for Kenneth Gant.
47:44Gant, we told you, had to leave
47:45with that shoulder re-injured,
47:47a shoulder or an arm, it appeared.
47:51And the Cowboys take a timeout
47:53with 2.22 left.
47:58In uniform today.
47:59And I spoke with Troy before the game
48:01and he said next week,
48:02he said he's going to go.
48:03He said, as a matter of fact,
48:04I'm going to go
48:05and if I tear the thing in half,
48:06I don't care,
48:07but I'm sick of standing on the sidelines.
48:12The hamstring, uh,
48:15bothering him,
48:16but he did throw some this week.
48:19And he's the emergency quarterback today.
48:23Hegram on first on third down, pardon me.
48:28Got maybe a yard.
48:30That's Jerry Glanville again right there.
48:32Jerry Glanville said,
48:33we will come out with our four wides on third down,
48:36but if you give us a look
48:37that we think we can run on,
48:38heck, I'm running a trap.
48:40I could trap my grandmother if I could.
48:42And he just tried to trap inside.
48:44And we'll be right back at 13 up in Atlanta.
48:54These are the best records in the NFC.
48:56And I guess what we're looking at these four really
48:58is to see who can beat the Dallas Cowboys.
49:00Where's your competition going to come from?
49:02Well, I'll tell you,
49:03you can take this record right here
49:04and you put a question mark next to it,
49:06you know, with the Detroit Lions.
49:08Then you take San Francisco
49:09and you know they are on a roll right now
49:11and they'll be playing New Orleans Saints.
49:13I have a feeling that San Francisco
49:15is going to come out on that one.
49:16The Giants play as well as their competition,
49:19except when they play the Cowboys,
49:21they don't match up well with them.
49:22Minnesota, Sean Salisbury coming on
49:25and Green Bay really is the team
49:27that I'm going to have a lot of interest in watching
49:29because when they're playing well,
49:31they're a pretty good team.
49:33Lions fans won't want to hear you writing them off,
49:35but I know what you're referring to is the fact
49:37that they've had the weakest schedule of that lot
49:39by compiling the 7-2 mark.
49:41I like the Detroit defense, though, Tim.
49:44Flags fly everywhere,
49:46somebody moving on the Dallas offensive line.
49:51All-star, number 79 offense,
49:56before the snap.
49:57That's Eric Williams.
49:58We reward the defense.
50:00Tim, you remember at the beginning of the game
50:03I mentioned to you that Bernie Kosar said
50:06that he wanted to get the offense
50:08comfortable with his cadence.
50:10Now what's happened is you get a quarterback,
50:12new quarterback in, Troy Aikman,
50:14comes up to the line of scrimmage
50:15and his cadence, everybody's used to.
50:17New guy comes in, he comes up,
50:18has a pause at a place he's not used to,
50:20then he starts to get the jump.
50:22Kevin Smith said that was a bit of a problem last week.
50:31Kosar had time and good coverage downfield
50:33and he just has to slide back
50:34near the original line of scrimmage.
50:37Picked up about five of the lead,
50:38second and ten when we returned
50:40at the two-minute warning.
50:42That's the two-minute warning.
50:44He was hurt, seems to be favoring his right leg.
50:47Well, Tim, what happened is he ran into Pierce Holt
50:50who was running a stunt with Jumpy Gathers inside.
50:52You're going to see the loop.
50:53Smith will step up and he gets whacked
50:56right on the right side by Holt's knee.
50:58See this? Boom, right there.
51:01We will get an update for you
51:03and keep you posted what's going on.
51:05But that looks like it's a very ginger walk.
51:08Sure is, and yet the impact in that picture
51:12was a little very difficult, really,
51:14to see where he was hit and what was hurt.
51:17But we will get you a report on Emmitt Smith.
51:19So all kinds of things going badly for Dallas
51:22in this first half here in Atlanta.
51:24They trail 13 to nothing, two minutes remaining.
51:28They have the ball at their own 35-yard line.
51:30Derrick Gaynor has come in
51:32to replace Emmitt Smith at the running back spot.
51:39Kostar intended for Harper incomplete.
51:44The coverage by Melvin Jenkins.
51:47Tim, remember we spoke about Norm Turner
51:50being nervous prior to the game
51:52because of all the adjustments that they had
51:54to make to the game plan.
51:56When you have Troy Aikman,
51:58you don't have to worry about the cadence.
52:00You don't have to worry about guys picking up the signals.
52:02And you also have that deep threat.
52:04And you know the ball's going to get there in a hurry.
52:06When Kostar comes in, you have to scale back the offense
52:09because you can't learn as many plays.
52:11And then you have to do the work
52:13to what your quarterback does well,
52:15which is an intermediate game.
52:17So far, they've not gotten it on track.
52:19Third and 11, three wide receivers.
52:21Kevin Williams joining Harper and Irvin.
52:24Kostar flushed and intended for Williams incomplete.
52:29Yeah, Pierce Holt got the pressure on him.
52:31Kostar felt it.
52:33He had Williams open, just overthrew him.
52:36Watch 95, Pierce Holt right here.
52:39He's going to go with the full rush
52:41on another 320-pounder, Kevin Cogut.
52:43Now he has him on his heels.
52:45Work to the inside. He feels it. Comes back.
52:48Incomplete.
52:51Atlanta's defense has been superb in this first half.
52:55Jett standing at his 20-yard line.
53:00Tony Smith back at the 20 of Atlanta.
53:04151 to play.
53:13And a flag down.
53:17They've run out of time there.
53:201-1.
53:26Delay of game. The ball against Dallas.
53:34Well, coming up at halftime on the NFL Today Halftime Report,
53:37Greg and Terry will have all the scores and highlights,
53:40plus a look back at the Jetts' shocking upset
53:42over the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III
53:45as they gather this weekend to celebrate the silver anniversary.
53:51Stay with us through halftime and we'll bring you up to date
53:54on all of the other action around the league.
53:56And Smith on his feet at the sideline,
53:58but obviously still in some pain and some difficulty.
54:01They've already lost Kenny Gant,
54:03apparent arm or shoulder injury.
54:06Jett's second punt.
54:08And again he gets a good bounce,
54:10and Smith had to chase it down.
54:12And Smith gets out over the 16-yard line.
54:17And apparently it's his right quadricep we're told,
54:20and it must have just been from that hard blow
54:23in his collision with Pierce Holt.
54:26Well, Tim, I'll tell you what happens on television.
54:29Television, you watch the game and it's on that little screen,
54:32and it makes everything relative.
54:34But when you're down on the field,
54:36a little bump like it looks like to us is a collision,
54:39and you can see Evan Smith's face.
54:41He's not only disappointed, he knows that hurts.
54:47Well, at the very least, it'll be a bruised leg.
54:50We would think if it's a quadricep muscle
54:52that took a real shot from a huge guy.
54:54Pierce Holt.
54:57Well, that's a tough guy,
54:59and it's got to be more than a bruise
55:01to get him busted off with that little John Deere tractor.
55:04Atlanta has a first down at their 16-yard line
55:07with 1.39 on the clock.
55:09Higram running straight ahead.
55:11And look at that effort.
55:13Boy, he's a tough guy.
55:15You can take Eric Higram, in my opinion.
55:18Now, don't forget, he missed the first two games,
55:20and he's still up there in the leading pressures.
55:22You can take him, put him right in the pro bowl.
55:24I think that guy has had an outstanding year.
55:29Certainly there with the guys that are up there with him,
55:31Sanders and Emmitt Smith.
55:35Second and two.
55:37At least in terms of his productivity,
55:39he has launched himself into the elite of the running backs,
55:42showing that he's got plenty of skill.
55:44It's funny, I mentioned to you earlier, Tim,
55:46oh, it's 10-10 now, Detroit-Green Bay.
55:48I mentioned to you earlier, he used to be number 41,
55:50and he didn't like the number
55:52because his favorite player was Tony Dorsett,
55:54so he asked for 33.
55:58He's from Dallas.
56:01Higram stopped that time behind the line.
56:04Darren Woodson coming up to make the tackle.
56:07Time counting down here in this first half.
56:10It has been a literally flawless first half
56:13performance by Atlanta.
56:15And Tim, I think this is one of the games,
56:17if you would have asked me prior to the game,
56:19what has to happen for Atlanta to win,
56:21this is what has to happen.
56:22First of all, they can have no mistakes.
56:24They have not.
56:25You have to be able to convert third down.
56:27They have.
56:28And Dallas has to be able to not play their best game,
56:31and they are not.
56:37So Atlanta just going to let this clock wind down here
56:41and go happily to the locker room,
56:43having played an excellent first half,
56:45getting some boos from the Dallas fans
56:48that are in attendance here.
56:49And there's a goodly number of them.
56:52That's the end of the first half with the score,
56:54Atlanta 13, Dallas nothing.
57:03CBS Sports coverage of the National Football League
57:05is sponsored by Oldsmobile.
57:09Burger King and its everyday value menu.
57:11Have it your way.
57:12I love this place.
57:14AT&T, we help put your world within reach.
57:17And by Heineken, just being the best is enough.
57:23This is Roger Stoddard.
57:25The injury.
57:26Pierce Holt will be running this stunt.
57:28It runs right into the right thigh.
57:30See this right here?
57:31A point right there of Emmitt Smith.
57:33Now what does that mean for the Dallas Cowboys?
57:35Well, you got Derek Lastic on the bench.
57:37You also have a big running back who they brought in,
57:39Lincoln Coleman, number 44, who they like.
57:42But most important, you're down by 13.
57:45You have not got your passing game going.
57:48You can see right here, 5 on 11, only 20 yards.
57:51You've not got your passing game going,
57:53and you've now become one-dimensional.
57:55So they have a tough road to go,
57:58but they are defending Super Bowl champions,
58:00and this will be a fun position for them to be in,
58:03just to prove how good they really are.
58:06Cowboys also lost Kenneth Gant,
58:08who had been playing as a regular in the secondary
58:10against the Red Gun of Atlanta in the first half.
58:13He's gone with what is an apparent shoulder injury.
58:16Kevin Williams returning the kickoff on the Dallas 5.
58:20Closed off at the sideline by Jeff Donaldson.
58:28Jeff Donaldson made the stop for Atlanta.
58:30If you look at the halftime, look at this.
58:3215 first downs to one.
58:3420 to 195, and then down here.
58:37See the bottom line is the Dallas Cowboys...
