00:00Heat's turning up down in Santa Clara.
00:02What are you doing, Brendan Iyuk?
00:03By the way, we haven't even mentioned Trent Williams.
00:05He's out in East Texas chilling.
00:08We're going to Tennessee Saturday
00:09to play week one of the preseason.
00:12And without Big Trent, I'm saying,
00:14hey, Brock Purdy, only work you're gonna get
00:17is in scrimmages where I know the team can't hit you.
00:20That's the only work you're gonna get.
00:21You're not playing in the game
00:23and we're not gonna risk you getting hit
00:25because Jalen Moore is out there
00:26playing left tackle or whatnot.
00:27So the 49ers, man, they got some things to do,
00:30but what do you do about Brendan Iyuk fans?
00:31888-957-9570, Shaski, the segment is sponsored
00:35by Go To St. Lumber, serving the Bay Area

00:40Yesterday's show was just wild.
00:42Just absolutely wild.
00:44I had something to call, it was just wild.
00:47It was one of the ones for the morning roast.
00:48It was one I would never, ever forget.
00:51But where are we at now today?
00:53Because, you know, we jumped to go
00:55with the breaking news, Sanders.
00:56It's not my guy's fault.
00:56Matt DeHeag was on him.
00:58Andrew Filippone's been all over it,
00:59but it was a report and he said the contract
01:02and the details aren't getting ironed out.
01:03And then Jordan Schultz said,
01:04yeah, there's nothing happening quite yet.
01:07So he's still a member of the 49ers.
01:10And I think you and I both agree.
01:12We want Brendan Iyuk to be a 49er.
01:14So at this point,
01:16Pittsburgh has nothing they can give us, right?
01:19They're not gonna give up a first round pick.
01:21They're not gonna give up multiple first round picks.
01:22They're not gonna give up a first and a second, right?
01:24It's too much compensation.
01:26So if they're not gonna give me what I want,
01:28I'm holding on to Brendan Iyuk
01:29and I'm daring him to try not to play this season.
01:33You sure you don't wanna play week one
01:34against the New York Jets?
01:35You sure you don't wanna play on Monday Night Football
01:37and get introduced to the crowd at Levi's Stadium
01:39wearing that number 11?
01:40You sure you don't wanna go up against Saul Skarner?
01:43I will call his bluff.
01:44I'm not trading Brendan Iyuk right now.
01:46I think Ricky Pearsall's out,
01:49dinged up again with a shoulder injury
01:51and Deebo's already, listen to Deebo, Shaski.
01:53He's still, he's like,
01:55it's weird not having Iyuk out there.
01:57You know, it's kind of weird for sure.
01:58I remember last year when we played the Giants,
02:01I had went to him, I was like, bro,
02:03I never knew how weird it was for you
02:04not to be on the field at the same time.
02:06And you know, the time that I was out
02:07and he was out there by himself
02:08and it was just like, I kind of see what you feel like,
02:11kind of feel awkward with, you know,
02:12being with somebody out there
02:13for four years straight or whatever.
02:14Business is business and you know how it goes.
02:17Business is business, Shaski.
02:20Here's the issue with playing hardball.
02:23It sounds great, but we don't understand
02:25what the ramifications are, right?
02:27So there might be a feeling amongst other,
02:31again, I'm speculating, I meant this on the front end,
02:34but there might be a sentiment from other people
02:37like, well, wait a minute,
02:38like this is how you treat players who have,
02:41you know, that you think are very, very, very good players
02:45that you say you wanna, you know, keep long-term,
02:48this is how it goes?
02:49Like that could, he could be a malcontent.
02:54Look, Antonio Brown is clearly just whack job,
02:58completely insane, but the wide receiver position
03:02as a by-product of the way it's set up
03:05feels like it creates more malcontents
03:07than maybe any other position in that sport.
03:10And Ayuk has been nothing but professional
03:13his entire career.
03:14I also saw Terrell Owens, you know,
03:17start off as a yes sir, yes ma'am kind of a person
03:20in all of his press conferences
03:21and then he evolved over time.
03:24We watched Colin Kaepernick evolve over time.
03:25So who's to say that Brandon Ayuk remains the same,
03:29evolves, who knows?
03:30But maybe he's a malcontent
03:33and maybe that seeps over to other people.
03:35I'm not saying, like, I don't even like saying that out loud
03:37because I don't think it's fair
03:38because his track record is spotless.
03:41But you just never know.
03:43You never know what it,
03:44introducing this to the sidelines, the locker room,
03:47how that seeps in.
03:48All right, let's play this out.
03:50He goes a month and instead of getting
03:52his typical eight, nine targets,
03:54he's getting three or four targets.
03:56He's only seen 41% of the snaps
03:58as opposed to, you know, 85% of the snaps.
04:01How does he react?
04:02You know, they're phasing in the young players
04:05and now he's in a contract walk year.
04:08You know, you're playing with his money.
04:12It sounds great.
04:13I would like them to do it.
04:14In Madden, I know it works.
04:16I just think the practicality of it,
04:19of the logistics of going through it every day,
04:21it's a little different.
04:22It might be a little different.
04:23It might be a little different.
04:24And maybe I'm being too big of a hater.
04:25I don't know.
04:26No, no, no, it's not being a hater.
04:27It's just trying to look at the situation.
04:29You have to look at the situation
04:30if you do bring them back.
04:32But I think Brett and I,
04:33you can, I think this locker room,
04:34this is where I trust the locker room,
04:36with guys like Fred Warner,
04:37with guys like Debo,
04:39with guys like Brock Purdy,
04:40with guys like Christian McCaffrey,
04:42that once it's time to play football,
04:45and if you do keep him on his team
04:47and he doesn't have his deal
04:48and he's playing on a 14, 15 million,
04:49then obviously he's not gonna be happy about that.
04:52But I do think he'll be able to compartmentalize,
04:55okay, they didn't pay me,
04:57I'm gonna go out there and try to prove it to them.
04:59And if I don't get the targets,
05:00it is what it is,
05:02I'm just, hey, I'm just crossing out the calendar.
05:04Huh, another day passes by
05:06to where I can get closer and closer to free agency.
05:08But I do think,
05:09once he puts that helmet on in a regular season,
05:11that be it, go out there and be a total professional.
05:13And then he'll do what he's gotta do
05:15to help this team win football games.
05:16Because at the end of the day,
05:17I do believe that Brendan Aiyuk
05:19wants to win football games.
05:20He wants to win at a high level.
05:22I saw his body language out there at Superbowl.
05:23That didn't look like a kid
05:24that was just all about his money.
05:26That guy was distraught,
05:27losing the biggest game of his life.
05:29When you lose a Superbowl,
05:30we remember Duke Bosa, his rookie year,
05:32when they lost in Miami.
05:34He was sobbing left and right.
05:35Deebo Samuel, hell,
05:36I remember Frank Gore walking off the field
05:38in New Orleans with the confettis
05:39coming down from Baltimore
05:41and Frank Gore's tearing up left and right.
05:43So I do, I hear what you're saying.
05:45I understand it completely.
05:47It could become a factor.
05:48Now, I think that becomes a factor
05:50if you're losing games.
05:52If you're winning, okay,
05:54he could be able to check that.
05:55But if you're losing
05:56and you're only getting four to five targets
05:58and you're messing with my value and my numbers,
06:01then yeah, then we got a problem.
06:02And I'm recklessly speculating there.
06:03But this is what a front office is doing
06:05is they're playing out these scenarios.
06:07This goes back to KYP, right?
06:09Know your personnel.
06:10They know him, obviously, much more than I do.
06:14But players do evolve and they mature
06:16and their personalities change over time.
06:20Some stay the same.
06:21Some change.
06:22And so, I don't know.
06:23B, I don't know how that would work.
06:25I do know this, that if I was the quarterback, right?
06:29And let's say I'm Brock Purdy.
06:30The beauty of this system is
06:32I'm never really exactly told who to throw to
06:35on any given play
06:36because we have such a balanced offense.
06:38I do think when you have a high-priced wide receiver
06:41who's an apex player,
06:42there is a tendency to tunnel vision,
06:45look that guy down the road.
06:46But the same can be said about a guy like,
06:48hey, I know BA needs to get looks
06:49because if he doesn't, he's going to get frustrated.
06:52Like, it just, I don't need any of that.
06:54Like, I don't need that.
06:56But you, I don't think that would happen
06:58because BA's a damn good player.
07:00I don't want to lose him.
07:00You know what I mean?
07:01Yeah, yeah, no, I hear you.
07:02I don't want to lose him.
07:03And I don't think he'll force it.
07:04I think Brock's going to do what Brock does
07:06and he's going to do what's best for the offense.
07:08But I think Brock realizes BA's a damn good player.
07:11You don't want to get him involved in a game plan anyway.
07:13He's a top wide wide receiver.
07:16Obviously, the Pittsburgh Steelers think that,
07:17the Patriots think that.
07:19Now, listen to Ross Tucker and he was talking about,
07:21you know, thank God the Patriots didn't do that.
07:22Why would they do that
07:23when you could just draft a wide receiver?
07:25Patriots haven't drafted a good wide receiver since 2002.
07:28Like, it sounds, it's easier said than done, right?
07:31Everybody says, well, there's receivers
07:32coming out left and right.
07:33There's receivers coming out left and right.
07:35As good as the receiver class has been,
07:38there's a lot of bust in these receiver classes.
07:40Let's just go position by position.
07:41Forget receiver for just a second.
07:43When the Niners tried to replace
07:45Deshaun Golsan with Eric Reid,
07:47I thought it went okay.
07:49It did.
07:50I think he got, like, I think he was one-time Pro Bowler.
07:52I could be wrong.
07:53Yeah, he had a really good rookie season.
07:54No, but-
07:54He did solid.
07:55But I think looking back, like,
07:57it didn't go as well as they wanted, right?
08:00And even then, he was solid.
08:01Coaching staff changes, regime changes.
08:05And remember, they tried to play a bit middle,
08:06linebacker.
08:07It was-
08:08To succeed against the Dallas Cowboys,
08:09it was an absolute train wreck.
08:10I like Eric Reid as a player.
08:11I like him a lot.
08:12I actually like him as a person.
08:13But they tried to do that, right?
08:15They tried to do that.
08:16They tried to do that at D-Tackle,
08:18and we all know how that went.
08:20Yep.
08:21Right, it was very difficult.
08:22They tried to do that at quarterback with Trey Lance.
08:25How'd that work out?
08:26It didn't work out.
08:27You're trying to replace Jimmy Garoppolo with Trey Lance.
08:29Now, to their credit, they did it with Lakin Tomlinson.
08:32They had Lakin Tomlinson in the fold,
08:34and they drafted Aaron Banks to be his replacement,
08:36but they gave him a red shirt year.
08:38Yep.
08:38Right?
08:39So, like, that's, to me, that matters.
08:40Like, having that red shirt year,
08:41and then, like, setting him up for success,
08:44and Banks has been really good.
08:45Now, we'll see if they end up paying him.
08:47To your point, it sounds easier than it looks,
08:51and I look at the Ricky Pearsall situation,
08:53and I'm like, look, I think Ricky Pearsall
08:55will be fine next year.
08:57I don't know if I want him being my starter day one,
09:00and I don't think you drafted him in April
09:02to be your starter day one.
09:03Well, just look at the Niners' history.
09:05Going back to Chio.
09:07Chio's the third-round pick.
09:09Yeah.
09:10Third-round pick, right?
09:11Third-round pick.
09:11Tennessee Chattanooga.
09:12Yep.
09:13J.J. Stokes was the first-round pick,
09:14and I remember J.J. Stokes at UCLA.
09:16Trade it up!
09:16He was a monster at UCLA.
09:19Never quite panned out in the pros.
09:21We talked about Rashawn Woods at Oklahoma State,
09:24and it's just, that was just a,
09:25A.J. Jenkins' first-round.
09:26We all remember that pick.
09:28There's a lot, Michael Crabtree, first-round pick.
09:32Had a great year, couple seasons.
09:34One great year.
09:35One great year, decent year, tours at Keely's,
09:38but that was that.
09:38I know.
09:39That was that.
09:40It is really hard.
09:41Like, we keep saying, oh, man, you can go get this player.
09:43Receivers come a dime a dozen.
09:45Do they really?
09:46Like, you can pop here and there,
09:48and they'll pop here and there,
09:49but it's really, really hard.
09:51So for people to just say,
09:52well, you can just draft another receiver.
09:53Receivers are rich.
09:54Well, there's adjustment.
09:56What about the system?
09:57What college system are you playing in?
09:58Are you playing in the spread system?
09:59Are you just running bubble routes?
10:00Are you just running go-routes?
10:02Are you just running comeback routes?
10:03Can you run crossers?
10:04Can you run block?
10:05There's so many complexities to the pro game
10:08as compared to the college game.
10:09It's a tough adjustment for a lot of these guys.
10:12And look, Ricky Pearsall, from when I'm here,
10:14can beat man coverage here and there,
10:15but how physically,
10:16can he hold up physically in this league?
10:18We'll see.
10:19Now, you play in the SEC,
10:20and the SEC is as close to the NFL
10:23as you'll get in college football,
10:24but obviously, he's getting nicked up early in camp,
10:27and it's like, can you really count on Ricky Pearsall?
10:29I know he's a first-round pick,
10:31but boy, I don't know.
10:33Bonte, they tried to do the same thing.
10:35They had Trent Brown on the roster.
10:37They traded Trent Brown away,
10:39and they tried to draft his replacement in McGlinchey.
10:44I always thought McGlinchey underwhelmed.
10:46He did.
10:47He did underwhelm.
10:48And he ended up being, basically,
10:49a four-year starter for you,
10:50or a five-year starter,
10:52and he walked in free agency.
10:53Still one of the craziest contracts I've ever seen.
10:5650 million guaranteed from the Broncos,
10:58but they're still chasing right tackle.
11:00Colton McKivitt's fine for one year,
11:04but I think a lot of people would say,
11:05yeah, if they can upgrade right tackle,
11:07boy, they've been chasing that since Trent Brown.
11:10Since Trent Brown, no doubt about it.
11:12To your point, I think it's really hard
11:14to just draft and replace a position.
11:16And then when you develop somebody-
11:16Drafting's hard in general.
11:18Yeah, it really is,
11:19but when you finally pop on one,
11:21and Deebo Samuel, I see the 5-1-0 here
11:24in the Xfinity mobile text line.
11:25Shout out to the Xfinity mobile text line.
11:28When you do finally get a receiver to pop,
11:30like Deebo, and then Brendan Aiyuk,
11:31it makes up for drafting Dante Pettis in the second round.
11:34It makes up for waiting on Jalen Hurd to get healthy.
11:37It makes up for Danny Gray not contributing nothing.
11:42That's a sunken cost.
11:43I mean, Danny Gray can't even get on the damn field.
11:45And you took Ronnie Bell last year,
11:47even though it was late, it was very late,
11:48you took Ronnie Bell.
11:49They've taken a lot of receivers, man.
11:51And we'll see about him.
11:52Let's go to Nathan Virginia.
11:53Nate, what's happening?
