00:00Steph Curry became eligible for an extension, a one-year extension in 26-27 for $63 million.
00:10Now he's been at the Olympics and now he's apparently taking a lot of time off.
00:15And I went back and I listened to a Mike Dunleavy clip when he was asked about Steph being extension
00:22eligible.
00:23Mike Dunleavy talked about how it's important for the Warriors to get Kaminga and Moody
00:27re-signed and they asked him about Steph and Mike Dunleavy said, obviously we'll talk
00:33about that too, whatever he wants, meaning whatever Steph wants.
00:39So it makes all the sense in the world.
00:41Anthony Slater's story centers on whether or not Curry wants an extension right now
00:54in the offseason, between now and October 21st.
00:58And my question to Warrior fans is, A, why wouldn't he want an extension right now for
01:0726-27?
01:08And then I guess my second question would be, well what if he doesn't sign an extension
01:17in 26-27?
01:19Would there be a reason for that other than something that would make you panic?
01:26And I don't know the answer to that, but the one thing I do agree with is, depending on
01:32what happens, I do think it will indicate something about the way he's feeling, about
01:40the way the Warriors are feeling, and about the direction of the team in the near future.
01:48You know, if I may, Stiney, I think this is leverage, and I understand it, and I don't
01:53think he'll make that decision, like he'll just let it go.
01:58I don't think we'll know anything by October 21st.
02:03So they're not going to be 20 and 30, because that's not the deadline.
02:07I just feel like, Stiney, this is like part two of, again this is in his contract, of
02:14him saying, I have to look around and believe that you guys are doing everything for the
02:18team, but mainly my window, because I'm not going to be here forever at this level.
02:25And again, he's not thirsty for the cash, so he can prolong it, but other than that,
02:30that's the only thing, on top of what he said in Vegas about things changing quickly in
02:34this league, there's no other explanation.
02:39In fairness, it's a little like Brunson, though not altogether like Brunson.
02:44Well, Brunson gave money up, but he can recoup that money.
02:48And he's at a point in his career where he's younger than Curry.
02:52So Steph Curry can not sign an extension this offseason, and then sign a two-year extension
02:59next offseason for more than 63, and then whatever that second year is, no doubt.
03:08But why wouldn't you take a bird in the hand?
03:11And 60 birds.
03:14Here's the part that I think is legitimate.
03:21There's too much going on to not believe that Steph is thinking about the next year or two.
03:35No doubt about it.
03:36This is just natural, right?
03:38It's natural.
03:39It so happens that this is in his contract with Stani.
03:42What if you were Steph?
03:43Again, I know I keep going to what he said in Vegas, but that's shit the world, and only
03:50the Steph Curry-like way.
03:51I totally get it.
03:53You think he wants to ride out not being in, let's just take a laugh, not playing meaningful
03:58basketball after what he just experienced?
04:01So I totally get him taking this to the two-minute warning.
04:07Is there any chance the Warriors, even though Mike Dunleavy and a general manager is going
04:14to say what a general manager is going to say, is there any way the Warriors don't want
04:20to offer Curry that extension for one year?
04:24Nah.
04:25When you just played that soundbite, and I heard it from over here, Stani, and you got
04:28me remembering it, and you called me, you didn't say you disagreed, but you're like,
04:33you're crazy if you think they're doing everything and bending over for Steph Curry.
04:37They are.
04:38He's earned it.
04:39And as crazy as this sounds, it wasn't another title last weekend, but Stani, it was just
04:45a reminder, not that they needed it, that this dude has built what we are.
04:51He's been the maestro of this dynasty.
04:54We'll do what he says, and we'll acquiesce as simple as all outdoors.
05:00You know, the one thing, and tell me if you agree with this, Gou, when we talk about the
05:05greatest players in the game, LeBron, let's say Durant, Giannis, Curry, Jokic, it feels
05:15like we always know what LeBron's contract situation is.
05:20Always.
05:22Maybe because he always has an opt-out.
05:24And he's moved more than Steph.
05:26Steph's been one spot, but go ahead.
05:28I feel like Giannis, we all know he's under contract for another two or three more years.
05:33I feel like throughout Curry's career, we've never really cared.
05:39I mean, we've cared, but it's never been a focal point because he's never been the kind
05:43of player like LeBron or like Giannis, who apparently got Drew Holiday traded and got
05:51Lillard in there, or even like Durant, who's tested the waters.
05:58It's never been that important to know Curry's contract situation, because he's always been
06:02wrapped up, and he's never been the kind of player that says, I want out if I'm not winning.
06:08I feel like you're describing Frisky.
06:11Like those dudes have been Friskies.
06:13Definitely.
06:14You're right.
06:15Now I think Steph is Frisky.
06:17Maybe he is.
06:19Maybe he is.
06:21What I'm getting to is like, for the last year, when the Warriors were struggling, what
06:28do you do?
06:29Can we trade Wiggins?
06:30Can we trade Kaminga?
06:31Can we trade this?
06:32Can we do this?
06:33Can we get Paul George?
06:34Can we get Mark?
06:35And da da da da.
06:36The reality of this situation is, we're going to have to talk about this.
06:43We are going to have to talk about it.
06:46The deadline is October 21st.
06:49It's the day before the season starts.
06:51That's amazing.
06:52So if he doesn't sign an extension for 2026-2027, by the start of the season, then he can't
07:00sign one until the end of the season.
07:02That's news.
07:03So I agree with Slater.
07:07What would it mean if he doesn't sign an extension this summer for 2026-2027?
07:16To me, it means he put the Warriors on the clock.
07:21That's all.
07:22Am I wrong, Stein?
07:23I don't think so.
07:24He put them on the clock.
07:25I don't think so.
07:27I don't think you're wrong there.
07:28He turned down $60-plus million to put his team on the clock to get the team back in
07:36what he deems championship contention, or Steini, at this point, just a chance.
07:40And when you don't make the playoffs, I don't have to tell you, you don't have a chance.
07:44And that's what happened last year.
07:46I just hate it.
07:47Not that he wouldn't.
07:48I just hate that Steph didn't play big-time basketball and we got robbed of that.
07:53He didn't play a playoff game.
07:55Now, I do got to do, hey, we're on the radio, you know it's Warriors on mine all day.
08:00Steini, I'm being real here, and you're rubbing off on me.
08:05In a crazy world, do you think Joe Lacob would look at that decision like, hey, Steph, I
08:11love you like a son, but somehow, knowing I'm not or we're not tied to you for that
08:18$60-plus million, in a crazy world, do I dare say it wouldn't be the end of the world for
08:25Joe if somehow that, if you kind of get my drift, Stein, they're going to try.
08:30No, no, no, I get it.
08:31They didn't have, like, and that's what scares me about this, like, I could kind of see you're
08:38not, you don't want it to happen, Steini, but you're not going to jump off the Bay Bridge.
08:45I hear you.
08:46I absolutely hear you.
08:49And the 6-5-0, and I'm taking your word for it because I don't have the numbers in front
08:53of me.
08:54The extension he would sign next offseason would be for $130 million for two years.
09:01Well, that's $65 a year.
09:03So yes, he could wait, but the raise he would get by waiting isn't that significant.
09:12So and it's not about money at this point.
09:16It would be about if your man, if the chef feels like they can still cook.
09:21And then the other thing becomes, yeah, what does Joe Lacob want to do?
09:27I think he's in a position he could never tell us, you know, unless you gave us some
09:32truth serum.
09:33And he wants curry, Steini.
09:34But if they saw that, man, we don't have a chance, even with them, right, right, right.
09:44Just how human the mind works.
09:46I'm not, you know.
09:47If on October 21st, Steph hasn't signed that extension, they're going to have to tell us
09:52why.
09:53That is why.
09:54Wow.
09:55I think the story they would come up with would be, you know, Steph is the greatest
10:03team player of all time, and he's going to, you know, he's going to wait to sign the extension
10:09so as to give us, you know, a sliver of more wiggle room or just a hair more flexibility.
10:18But I'm not sure that, I'm not sure that it would give him more flexibility or it would
10:26make him any like I, I really do believe is Steph.
10:32Let me ask you this.
10:33If Steph Curry's got two more years left in his deal at 55 and 59, is he significantly
10:41more valuable to another team than if he's got one more year left in his contract at
10:4663?
10:47I don't know.
10:49He's so great.
10:51I want to say no, because you know what you would be getting and you already know that
10:55you got action and he would put you over the top.
10:58But numbers do matter, Stony, and so does the finances.
11:02But I got to believe, I'm changing my answer, I'm saying yes.
11:07That would have to be a part of it, right?
11:09What?
11:10Him not, him being more attractive if he doesn't do it.
11:13Yeah, I don't know.
11:14I don't know.
11:15It would be how he's playing, obviously.
11:17And it looks like if he's betting on himself, if he goes down this road of, hey, guru Stony,
11:2238 Steph is going to be just like I am at 36, baby.
11:25Right.
11:26And who knows?
11:27He might be.
11:28Who knows?
11:29He might be.
11:30There's a lot of miles in between that when you get there, Stony, from where he's at now
11:35to that juncture.
11:36Yeah.
11:37I don't know.
11:38I do think it's, you know, as the Warrior season approaches and we're going to obviously
11:42get to some Niners and things like that.
11:44But as the Warrior season approaches, that to me is the next telltale sign.
11:51No doubt about it.
11:53It's the next telltale sign.
11:55And what did Joe Lankov text you about this when we talked?
11:58I said, I'm overanalyzing it.
12:01Yeah, that's what he said.
12:02And I think what he means is, Stony, he says, Stony, here's the thing.
12:12Here's why you're overanalyzing it.
12:15Because we're going to offer him $63 million for that one-year extension and he's going
12:19to take it.
12:20No doubt.
12:21Nothing to see here.
12:22And it may happen August 15th.
12:23It may happen the 20th.
12:24It may happen in October.
12:25But when you talk about this much cheddar and in the article Slater was like he's unplugging
12:30for basketball, getting away, but it's like, you kind of get a margarita based on after
12:36you tell the team, hey, I want to exercise that.
12:39Hey, Aisha, we got another 60.
12:41Like, to not do that, Stony, to me is like, I feel like he's telling us what he's doing
12:48already.
12:49Yeah.
12:50Oh, no.
12:51Just me.
12:52Rembry6 on the YouTube chat.
12:53Lankov is a businessman and trading Curry would be bad for business.
12:59I agree.
13:00I don't necessarily agree.
13:03If he's still playing at a high level.
13:06Oh, thank you.
13:09And that's a big part of it.
13:11And I know people don't like to hear this, but let's face it.
13:16Steph has more value now, probably, than he'll have at the trade deadline.
13:23No doubt about it.
13:24To the Warriors, to the Warriors.
13:27And I agree with that.
13:28I'll tell you what, what situation I wouldn't want to get into is you play that you start
13:34playing the season and God forbid, oh my God, he's not the same player.
13:42Well now, what can you get for him?
13:44Not as much.
13:45Oh, man.
13:46If that's the case.
13:47Now, I'm not anticipating that happening, but I've also got to be realistic about his
13:53age at 36.
13:56I mean, here's the other thing.
13:57And he's got a lifetime.
13:58What is it?
13:59One billion dollar contract with Under Armour.
14:01Yeah.
14:02A life.
14:03Oh my God.
14:05So that, this 60-study is chump change.
14:08I don't know if I'd say that.
14:09I mean, wow.
14:10Not sure if I'd say that.
14:11Give me half a million.
14:12I mean, if somebody's going to rip me off that, I'm probably going to take it unless
14:17there are extenuating circumstances.
14:21And the last thing I want to say about Curry is, you know, of all the players out there,
14:28and I absolutely mean this, and it goes back to what I've always felt about Curry and playing
14:33with Curry.
14:35Of all the players out there, if there's a team or teams that think they need a piece
14:41to put them over the top, to me, Curry would be the guy.
14:45Whether it would be, even if it would be coming off the bench, he could be the difference
14:51between winning a title and not winning a title.
14:54And to me, the reason why is, is because Curry's still great, but he also can go into any situation
15:03and figure out the best way for that team to be successful, and then fit whatever style
15:10of play he needs to play into it.
15:13And how valuable is that?
15:14I think it's hugely valuable.
15:16I mean, think about this for a sec.
15:19How many teams right now, if you just dropped Steph Curry onto their team, could win a title?
15:25OKC.
15:26OK.
15:27Memphis.
15:28OK.
15:29Boston.
15:30OK.
15:31I'll repeat.
15:33OK.
15:34Philly.
15:35OK.
15:36Philly.
15:37I don't know about Sachs, but whatever.
15:38They got DeRozan.
15:39Dallas.
15:40Dallas.
15:41Dallas has Curry, Kyrie, and Doncic.
15:42Oh my gosh.
15:43They're probably pretty good.
15:44Minnesota.
15:45Exactly.
15:46Like, I really believe that.
15:47Exactly.
15:48And I think maybe that's what this thing kind of leads to, is if you're not playing well
15:53at the trading deadline, would there be a team out there that looks and says, we get
16:00Steph Curry.
16:01We can win it.
16:03And I think there could be eight or ten teams that absolutely think that and would be right
16:07in thinking that.
16:08And then at that point, you're the warriors and you say, we can get back in business in
16:14a hurry right now.
16:16Wow.
16:17It's going to hurt, but we can get back in business.
16:19Oh man, because remember I told you that haul for Steph would be, oh my goodness, I got
16:24to read something to you.
16:25Right now.
16:26Yeah.
16:27Right now.
16:28Yeah.
16:29John Sally.
16:30John Sally.
16:31There you go.
16:33This whole offseason and the Clay departure.
16:36Clay Thompson.
16:37I think I omitted something and I want to read this to you.
16:42And it goes back to what I keep harping on in his comments in Vegas.
16:46Any chance Curry is mad about what they did or how they handled Clay Thompson.
16:51So this is why he's the delay.
16:55I never really, I talked about it, Stony, but we say, oh, the warriors do what they
17:00want to do.
17:01Is there any merit to that in your opinion about Steph being mad the way that they handled
17:05clay?
17:06Cause I think I blew past if they wanted clay and he wanted clay, he would still be here
17:12or maybe he wanted that.
17:13And clay was the part that he could control, but tough to answer that tough to answer that
17:19question because to me, yeah, you got the big three, Steph, clay and Draymond, but we
17:26all know that within that big three, the rules are still different for Steph.
17:33And so, so on the one hand I could see a fan or somebody saying, I'll tell you what, what
17:42is, if Steph saw the, what, you know, how they handled clay, maybe he's thinking, I'm
17:47just a commodity too.
17:48And they'll, they'll do the same thing to me.
17:50I don't think he needs to worry about that because he is Steph Curry.
17:57But if he's, if he's not happy with their whole approach to the way they handled clay,
18:04I do wonder, yeah, maybe, maybe, and clay's on record as saying, Steph, I don't need you
18:10to vouch for me as I'm good, but I don't know.
18:15And maybe that deal vanishing for clay maybe has Steph a little irritated that that's how
18:20that went, that the two for 48 went away.
18:24Exactly.
18:25I don't know that.
18:26I don't know.
18:27I think it was, we get further down the road, we'll find out.
18:32And here's the other thing about kind of where, where Curry is and where the Warriors are
18:36is what happens to stars as they, as they get older.
