00:00Man, it's fun.
00:00All right, let's get into it.
00:02Kang, we got six questions.
00:04Gator won the toss, he'll go first.
00:05All right, here we go.
00:06Week zero question, guys.
00:07Big 10 quarterbacks.
00:09The conference has been depleted of top talent.
00:11Who would you bet would be the best quarterback
00:14in the Big 10 this season?
00:16You know, this is amazing
00:17because the Davey O'Brien watch list
00:20for the top quarterback in the country
00:22came out the other day,
00:24and there's like 30 quarterbacks on the list,
00:26and only two were from the Big 10,
00:28and neither are the quarterback that I went with.
00:31Those two quarterbacks were from Purdue
00:34with Hudson Card and Penn State with Drew Allard.
00:36And I'm gonna go with Will Howard at Ohio State.
00:40And until Ohio State throws out a quarterback
00:43that sucks at college football,
00:46you gotta go there
00:47because they're always gonna have the guy.
00:48And, you know, Will Howard comes from Kansas State,
00:51played four years at Kansas State,
00:52actually played in parts of all four years there,
00:56got better as his career went on,
00:59and the last couple years he was pretty effective.
01:01And now he's going to a school like Ohio State
01:04that has a ton of talent.
01:05I just think he's gonna have a chance to shine.
01:07I was really surprised Dylan Gabriel at Oregon
01:08was not on that watch list,
01:10but it's pretty amazing
01:11that there are only two Big 10 quarterbacks.
01:13There's one Big 10 quarterback coming back
01:14that's won a Big 10,
01:16Cade McNamara at Iowa.
01:18Problem is, is can you put up any numbers at Iowa?
01:21And they are getting their tight end back,
01:24and they do have a good offensive line,
01:26so I think there's a chance there.
01:28Couple of sleepers,
01:30Ethan Kaligmanis at Rutgers,
01:32and the Altmire kid at Illinois,
01:34but I'm gonna go Dylan Gabriel.
01:35I think he's probably the best quarterback in the Big 10.
01:38Kang?
01:39Yeah, I think the smart choice here is Dylan Gabriel, Doug,
01:42but I wanna be dumb.
01:43I didn't listen to a word you said last segment,
01:45so I'm gonna go Alex Orji.
01:47I don't care what you said.
01:48This is either a boom or a switch positions pick,
01:51and so I just, I'm hoping for a boom there.
01:53I'll go Orji.
01:55All right, make a bold prediction for September.
01:59All right, super bitter matchup.
02:01This is one that's a rivalry that already was bitter,
02:04and I think one school is really, really pissed.
02:09The number three ranked team in the country
02:11will go on the road and face a bitter rival
02:14Saturday, September 14th,
02:16with the Big 10's best quarterback, Dylan Gabriel.
02:19Final score from Corvallis, Oregon,
02:21Oregon State 28, Oregon 24.
02:24Wow.
02:26There you go.
02:27You want a bold, I gave you a bold.
02:28Think about how you'd feel
02:29if you were Oregon State right now.
02:31Pissed?
02:32Yes.
02:33Everything goes into that game for them.
02:35Man, that's, that's.
02:37Plus, they have a running back named Jam Griffin.
02:40Can you get on board with that?
02:41It's better than jelly.
02:42Yeah.
02:43Always.
02:45That's a lot bolder than what I'm gonna say,
02:46but maybe this is bold, maybe not.
02:48You guys can be the arbiters,
02:49Alabama and Michigan will each have a loss in September.
02:53Alabama's gotta go to Wisconsin.
02:55Michigan plays in September, Texas and USC.
02:58I wanted to do Wisconsin over Alabama,
03:00but Wisconsin lost so much.
03:01I thought about it.
03:02Yeah, they lost so much.
03:03So I kind of hedged it by saying
03:04they're both gonna have a loss
03:05because Alabama has to play Georgia still,
03:07and Michigan's obviously got Texas.
03:09What's so weird about the new dynamic of college football,
03:12that's not crippling anymore.
03:14Right.
03:14Yeah.
03:15Kang?
03:16All right, my bold prediction for September is
03:18Arch Manning takes over as Texas' starting quarterback.
03:21Ooh.
03:22Wow.
03:23Now, obviously, everyone knows who Arch Manning is,
03:25so that's not crazy that he could be good enough to start.
03:27The problem is Quinn Ewers is ahead of him,
03:29and he's pretty damn good.
03:30So, but that's my bold prediction for September.
03:33Arch starts.
03:35All right, if you could be at one
03:38non-local college football game this year,
03:40what would you choose?
03:42Okay, so I'm gonna say,
03:43I'm gonna say, I'm gonna say,
03:44what would you choose?
03:46Okay, so.
03:47Hi.
03:48You're going first.
03:49Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.
03:52Maybe I'll steal your thunder,
03:53maybe I won't, you just don't know.
03:55For me, it's easy.
03:56It's the aforementioned Georgia-Alabama game.
03:58Georgia's gotta go to Bryant-Denny Stadium.
04:00It's in September.
04:02They gotta play Alabama.
04:03I love it, and that's one I would kill to be at.
04:06I got a buddy of mine who's taking his kid to the game.
04:09They're going on a big, like, father's trip out there.
04:11It sounds like a ton of fun.
04:13I would love to see that one.
04:15I'm a little uncomfortable,
04:16but trying to focus on the stuff that I love
04:17about the new world order of college football.
04:19One of them is match-ups
04:21that you only saw in video games, right?
04:24That the fans in EA Sports College Football
04:26would put together these match-ups
04:28that would never happen in the real world,
04:29or rarely happen, and you could do them every week
04:32in video games.
04:34I'm going with Oklahoma at LSU, November 30th.
04:38Those are two schools.
04:39It doesn't feel like they should be playing
04:40at each other's stadiums,
04:41and I wanna be in Baton Rouge someday,
04:45so I'm just choosing this match-up
04:45that we've never seen before,
04:47and if it's a non-local one, that's the one.
04:49I like it.
04:50Normally, on a question like this,
04:51I would just look at LSU's schedule
04:52and pick the best game out of it,
04:54because I wanna go there, too,
04:55but Georgia and Alabama's hard to pass,
04:57but I like yours.
04:58Yeah, I was looking at LSU's schedule, too, guys,
05:01but I went with what you picked there, Gator.
05:03Georgia at Alabama, huge game.
05:05Would love to be there, as well.
05:07I know your buddy has a father-son trip.
05:09I'll be your son for the weekend, Gator.
05:10We can go down there, all four of us,
05:13and have a great time, but that's a huge game.
05:15Great game, Georgia, Alabama.
05:17Can't wait.
05:19Okay, Oklahoma State is putting QR codes
05:22on the back of their helmets.
05:23It's to link fans to the players' NIL donation pages.
05:27You think everyone's gonna be doing this?
05:30Yep, I do, and this is one of those things
05:33about the New World Order that's hard to adjust to.
05:37It's small, it's unobtrusive,
05:40it's on the back of the helmet,
05:41kind of where the numbers are.
05:43I mean, look, I don't have to love it,
05:46but ask yourself this, whatever your favorite team is,
05:50do you want them to fall behind
05:51because you're not doing this?
05:53It seems like a small price to pay
05:55to put a QR code on the back of the helmet.
05:58I think it's real simple to do,
06:01and every school should do it.
06:03I'm not sure how successful it's going to be
06:05beyond a couple years, or is that gonna be the way to go,
06:08because that's just an easy donation,
06:11and you don't even have to worry about quote-unquote NIL
06:14and having the players earn the money.
06:16Now it's just a flat-out donation to the program.
06:20Yeah, I don't know if everyone's gonna do it.
06:22I can't see Notre Dame doing it, that type of school,
06:26but I do think it's gonna happen a lot more, of course.
06:29Will it work?
06:30I think that's the question, how effective will it be,
06:32whether other schools will do it,
06:33but NIL and all this QR code stuff
06:36and all this craziness that we're not used to seeing
06:39is just gonna happen more and more,
06:40and we gotta get used to
06:42the ever-changing college football, unfortunately.
06:47All right, Doug's son, who's 22 years old,
06:49recently told Doug that Fox's big noon kickoff
06:53is ruining college football,
06:55because no one wants the marquee game at noon.
06:58Do you guys agree with Doug's 22-year-old son?
07:01First of all, I could see B. Shizzle saying this,
07:04so I love that he's got that strong of an opinion on it.
07:07Yeah, right?
07:09Ruining it!
07:10I don't know if it's ruining it,
07:12but the way that I look at it is,
07:14I've always looked at the game,
07:15as long as it doesn't conflict with Michigan State,
07:18which is the team that I'm gonna watch most often,
07:21and the ones that I'm gonna make,
07:22that's appointment viewing for me,
07:23as long as it doesn't interrupt that viewing,
07:26I don't care, you know?
07:27But there is something that kinda takes away
07:29when the best game of the week is already done with
07:31before the second games get going.
07:33It's funny, because this is the perspective of the world
07:36through a 22-year-old's lens, right?
07:39Big noon kickoff is ruining college football.
07:42I actually told him we were gonna talk about this,
07:43and he was like, okay, ruining's a bit strong.
07:45But he's like, Ohio State-Penn State
07:48should be the whiteout game at State College,
07:50but it's probably gonna be a noon game.
07:52And he's like, I think the biggest game of the week
07:55should be the night game.
07:56He also is coming back with all his buddies
07:58from Michigan-Texas, and he's like,
08:01we don't wanna be there at noon, we wanna tailgate!
08:03And I'm like, yeah, got it, you're 22.
08:06But I don't think it's ruining it.
08:08In fact, I kinda like that we can count on
08:11a huge game at noon, there's usually a huge game at 3.30,
08:14and a huge game at night.
08:15We got great games all throughout the day.
08:17I love night games, and I understand what he's saying.
08:19Like, that is the game he's saying is the night game.
08:22Ruining it is a bit strong, of course.
08:25Ruining college football, I think there's other things
08:27that might be quote-unquote ruining it.
08:29But I tell him, don't worry.
08:31I think the nooner games will no longer be the marquee.
08:33It is gonna be the night game,
08:35but there'll be other good games spread throughout the day,
08:37but the night game will become the marquee game,
08:39because nothing is sacred in college football anymore.
08:42And as long as the teams that are coming in,
08:45like Oregon, Washington, USC, UCLA,
08:48as long as these teams pull their weight
08:51and they're still really good programs,
08:52we're gonna have plenty of big noon kickoff games,
08:56I guess, that the bigger game will be later in the afternoon
08:59because you're not gonna have a noon start
09:00in Washington.
09:01That's a good point, that's a good point.
09:05All right, final question, guys, before the season starts.
09:08Conference expansion, 12-team playoff, NIL, Portal.
09:13Bottom line, do you think you'll enjoy college football
09:16more than the old system?
09:21I'm trying to focus on the stuff I love.
09:23I'm really trying, because I'm not sure that I will.
09:26I'm scared that the expanded playoff is gonna take me.
09:29Yeah, exactly, the week-in, week-out intensity
09:31of college football, because you're gonna have
09:33two, three losses and get into the postseason.
09:36But I've talked about the matchups, Oklahoma at LSU,
09:39that wouldn't have happened as much in the old system.
09:42Texas at Michigan, Ohio State goes to Oregon,
09:44Georgia goes to Texas.
09:45That stuff is great, and I imagine the playoff
09:48is gonna be a ton of fun.
09:49March Madness is a ton of fun, but I've always contended
09:52it's a silly way to determine a champion,
09:54and it's also watered down the regular season.
09:58I think I'm still gonna like it.
10:00I'm gonna be as open-minded as one can be,
10:03but there's so much about the new world order
10:04that makes me uncomfortable, but I think I'm gonna like it.
10:07Yeah, there's a lot that I don't like.
10:10I don't like where NIL is going.
10:12I've said it a million times.
10:14No problem having a side hustle in college,
10:16and you make money off that, and you should be allowed to,
10:18but just the flat-out, now it's just donating.
10:21I do still have a problem with that.
10:23But the saving grace for all of it, to me, is the playoff.
10:28I like having 12 teams.
10:29Don't go beyond that.
10:31I think it's a nice round number to have, because-
10:35And on-campus games, too.
10:36Well, that's the thing.
10:37That's what makes it great, too, is because you have
10:38those on-campus games in the first round,
10:40and then you adjust, and then you move on past that.
10:44Is there gonna be bickering about who should get in
10:47and who shouldn't?
10:47Of course there is, but no one's gonna bitch
10:50about the top teams haven't been picked.
10:54The top teams are 100% gonna be in there.
10:56It's the teams that are fringed at 12.
10:59Have that debate.
11:00That's fine, but I think it's gonna be healthier
11:01and better in the long run.
11:03Plus, it makes the bowl games better.
11:04There's more of them.
11:06I wish the line wasn't so gray anymore
11:08between college football and pro football,
11:10but unfortunately, this is where we're at.
11:13I love the differences, and there's just not
11:15as many differences anymore besides the helmets.
11:19I feel like I'm going to like it more,
11:20because I'm just more of a pro football guy,
11:22so it's gonna, for me, who's not a huge,
11:25as much of a college football fan as you guys are,
11:27I probably will end up liking it more,
11:28because it resembles what I like, pro football,
11:30but I feel for the college football purists
11:32and the game that you used to watch and love,
11:34but I just don't think that's ever gonna go back that way.
11:37So, in the end, for me, it's gonna be yes,
11:39but I'm a pro football guy.
11:41And there it is, the first edition
11:43of the Transfer Portal Marching Band Live Animal Mascot
11:46targeting thingy.
11:49It's back.
11:50Love it.
11:52We'll debut the pro version, the NFL version, tomorrow.
11:55Yes.
11:569 Omaha 4 down around the league blitz thingy.
11:59That is Thursday here on 97.1 The Ticket.
