00:00As always, breast cancer is a complex disease to deal with.
00:08The numbers in Italy speak of more than 800,000 people affected.
00:12To play a crucial role in prevention, but also during the treatment period,
00:16the quality and lifestyles.
00:18In Italy, 48% of women affected by breast cancer
00:21judge tiring but satisfying their quality of life during and after therapies.
00:27The IOMA Foundation presented in Milan a survey
00:30made with the contribution of Gilead,
00:32conducted on over 300 women affected by the disease
00:36with a new educational campaign to sensitize patients, relatives and caregivers.
00:42For us, Gilead has this mission to create a better world for everyone
00:47and with this commitment we have on solid oncology,
00:52with the support of all stakeholders,
00:56in particular the medical society, the scientific research society,
01:01the association of patients, the institution, but also the media,
01:04we can bring innovation to all patients who need it.
01:08I believe that this campaign is a sign of this,
01:11a sign of innovation, because it is the first time
01:14in this setting of the metastatic breast cancer,
01:19but also a partner among all those who are here today.
01:23However, I tell them that I am proud to be on the side of IOMA in this initiative.
01:27The fundamental role is assumed by the medical-patient communication,
01:31which must be characterized by empathy and listening skills, but not only.
01:35From the moment of diagnosis to the entire treatment process,
01:41especially when the treatment can be heavy,
01:44because it may require significant therapeutic procedures,
01:49the fact of having a doctor on your side, but also a psychologist,
01:55who accompanies you from the moment of diagnosis onwards,
01:58is really part of the treatment.
02:01Last year we published a catalogue with five requests
02:07regarding women with metastatic breast cancer.
02:11The first is to have specific paths,
02:15to have a psychologist or a good relationship with the doctor,
02:19nutrition and therefore the whole part of lifestyle,
02:24but not least to have an acceleration on new drugs.
02:29But how much impact do the side effects related to therapies
02:33on the daily life of patients?
02:35Therapies guarantee a greater amount of life
02:39and today we also know how to improve the quality of life
02:44because they better control the disease.
02:46However, side effects related to therapies
02:49accompany and impact on the daily life of patients
02:53and we need ancillary treatments and support
02:57to focus on this aspect,
02:59so that a greater quality of life can be gained
03:04together with the advantage in quantity of life
03:07obtained with new treatments.
03:09New drugs allow us to improve the maximum line
03:13of most of the toxicities experienced in the past
03:16and today we need to focus more and more
03:19on support treatments and on communication with patients
03:23to try to improve these goals more and more.
03:27In oncological patients it is necessary to do a screening
03:30and go to detect the sixth vital sign,
03:32i.e. the psychological and emotional state of the patient.
03:35It becomes important for the oncologist
03:38to work on what the patient was before.
03:44Very often we hear that there is a need to go back to a before.
03:49Actually, that before led us to where the disease came.
03:54As an oncologist, I also support the promotion
04:00of a self-change that allows me to face life,
04:05that allows my patient to face life in a different way
04:09compared to how he faced it before the disease.
