00:00:00Okay, happy hump day.
00:00:15If we are still saying that here in the discourse from the Pat's interference podcast, it is
00:00:19Wednesday afternoon Patriots are playing tomorrow.
00:00:21I said this at the end of the last episode.
00:00:23It's a different schedule this week.
00:00:25This is the last time I'm going to have an episode until next week.
00:00:29So we will not have the traditional game after review, film notes, mailbag, everything like
00:00:34we did on Monday.
00:00:35That will be next week, a couple of guests, not as much film, but certainly some takeaways
00:00:39from whatever happens Thursday night in New Jersey with the Pats and the Jets.
00:00:43In the meantime, another heater of an episode.
00:00:47This time with James White.
00:00:48Again, I told you last week would be coming on.
00:00:50We go for an hour diving deep, not only the Patriots offense versus the Jets defense and
00:00:54the Jets offense versus the Patriots defense.
00:00:56We talk about why he's still laughing about Sam Darnold seeing ghosts.
00:01:00At the time, though, I should tell you, we did not have the injury report.
00:01:03So as you know, you know, there's not a whole lot of practice time between, you know, Sunday
00:01:07game going into Thursday and the injury report is really going to be significant because
00:01:11as we just found out before I started recording this intro, not only is Juwan Bentley out
00:01:16probably for the season, they're still listening as a shoulder, but we know it's a torn peck.
00:01:20The Darian Lowe is out.
00:01:21The Patriots second starting left tackle not playing Thursday against the Jets, which means
00:01:26Caden Wallace, third round rookie, it's been all college, a right tackle will probably
00:01:31be starting on the blind side.
00:01:33Aside from that, O'Shane Zemanis is out on the knee and here are the guys who are questionable.
00:01:37Three captains are here.
00:01:38David Andrews, questionable with a hip.
00:01:40Mike Gunwinew, questionable with a wrist.
00:01:42Jabril Peppers, questionable with shoulder injury and so is Deitrich Wise.
00:01:45For the Jets, Jermaine Johnson out, huge help from a pass rush standpoint because he's the
00:01:50only guy who's been winning up front for them.
00:01:51They talk about that more with James.
00:01:53CJ Mosley is questionable with the toe injury.
00:01:56Bill Belichick's favorite opposing linebacker to toss bouquets at when we had him in press
00:02:00conferences and I would say deservedly so.
00:02:03Mosley is not practiced this week and that could be key for an offense that we know of
00:02:06course wants to pound the ball down their opponent's throats, but I think also this
00:02:10week we'll see a little bit more of play action.
00:02:14Now, you need to throw the ball to someone for play action because that's how it works.
00:02:18It's a passing concept and we know the Patriots have obviously been dismal with that when
00:02:22it comes to the receiving.
00:02:23Did a lot of breakdowns with the Seahawks game and who got targets, who didn't, why
00:02:28that happened.
00:02:29I do think the Patriots will make adjustments, not only just because you would hope so, right?
00:02:34But there is something to be said for an offense that right now through two weeks has to make
00:02:38a foundational shift from this downfield deep play action passing game that was built off
00:02:44of their run game, which has been established properly to more quick game, which, you know,
00:02:49the old regime majored in, that's what they did was their bread and butter operate and
00:02:53throw within 10 yards of the line of scrimmage.
00:02:55And we don't know if Alex Van Pelt can do that, especially on the fly, but James White
00:03:00tells us in a little bit, you know, even with a limited amount of practice time, there may
00:03:04be a way to incorporate more of those concepts, which we've hardly seen weeks in the Patriots
00:03:10need to incorporate because they can't protect right now.
00:03:13So I will leave all the commentary about pass protection because we belabored it last
00:03:17time and end it right there.
00:03:19One more thing I do want to say, and we're going to get to our prize pick picks of the
00:03:22week on Monday night.
00:03:24I did TV the last segment closing in on 11 o'clock Eastern after watching and writing
00:03:30about film for 10, 11 hours doing this podcast generally long weekend.
00:03:34This is not to claim or excuse anything, but I argued for playing Joe Milton ahead of Drake
00:03:38May it's Wednesday.
00:03:40I've slept since you look back and sometimes when you talk into a microphone for long enough,
00:03:44you say things you're like, yeah, it probably wasn't, it wasn't the smartest take, but my
00:03:48concern for the state of the offensive line is really what that was about.
00:03:52It's not because I'm rushing to put Joe Milton in the game.
00:03:54It's because I don't want Drake May in this situation.
00:03:56And the question was predicated on the, the idea that Jacoby Brissett would get hurt.
00:04:01What do you do after that?
00:04:02There is a way.
00:04:04And I should have said this at the time to put Drake May in and have a very simple, safe
00:04:08game plan.
00:04:09And if you don't move the ball downfield, but he gets real NFL reps, uh, and even if
00:04:14you go scoreless, that's valuable experience that goes beyond the 30% of snaps he's seeing
00:04:18in practice with the starting offense, which are also valuable, but it still frightens
00:04:23me because you're trying to build new habits again, from the literal ground up with his
00:04:28footwork and putting them in this situation and only having to read different defenses
00:04:32of aid defenders to get, he's more athletic, but avoiding sacks is about more than just
00:04:36how fast you can run or how quickly you can react.
00:04:40It's about anticipating where that rush is going to come from and all the experience
00:04:43sliding and moving within the pocket, especially when the Patriots put them under center, which
00:04:48is going to happen.
00:04:49He was never under center really in college.
00:04:51Okay.
00:04:52Jacoby Brissett has done that for the last decade.
00:04:54He's worked at all of those things, reading defenses, the footwork, evading rushers, getting
00:04:58out and got much better at when his first year really is a starter with the Colts.
00:05:02He was a sack machine.
00:05:04It was a vending machine for sacks.
00:05:06You just had to get close to him and push him like a button.
00:05:09He went down a lot and now he's not doing that as much.
00:05:12To me, again, I talked about that's really key.
00:05:15Anyway, I would not start Joe Milton.
00:05:17This isn't a backtrack.
00:05:18It's just to say the couple of times that you go, all right, that was a little too far
00:05:21late at night, but you get it here.
00:05:23This is the podcast and we're going to move forward with James White, but not until capability
00:05:29here, which you know, being real all the time, we are ice cold with the prize picks, picks
00:05:34of the week.
00:05:36I'm a huge supporter of the podcast.
00:05:37You should be good to them.
00:05:38And here's why.
00:05:39Not just because they're America's number one daily fantasy sports app where it's you
00:05:43against the numbers.
00:05:44But right now through September, as you build a stat projection lineup, just more or less,
00:05:49you pick the player, they'll give you a stack.
00:05:51You think more or less and boom, you pick them.
00:05:52They're giving you a free square.
00:05:54It's Caleb Williams, a half a passing yard.
00:05:57If Caleb Williams has one passing yard on Sunday, boom, you win.
00:06:01So you're really just up to whatever picks come next.
00:06:03And we're going to be a couple of winners coming later.
00:06:05This is the simplest and fastest way to win money while you watch sport.
00:06:08Again, you just pick two or more stat projections for players in the NFL or MLB or basketball,
00:06:15wherever it might be, and see if you win.
00:06:16That's it.
00:06:17And you can win up to a hundred times your money.
00:06:18If you have four correct picks, I've used it before.
00:06:21We've talked about this.
00:06:22We're going to give you some on football, but until Sunday rolls around until Thursday
00:06:25night rolls around, download the price pick app today and use code CLNS for 50 bucks instantly
00:06:32once you play $5 and that's win or lose.
00:06:34That's code CLNS on price picks.
00:06:36You get $50 instantly when you play $5.
00:06:39You don't even need to win.
00:06:41It's guaranteed.
00:06:42Price picks run your game.
00:06:44Okay.
00:06:45Time for these two new price picks picks of the week.
00:06:46We're going to stick with the Patriots because supposedly that's what I know best.
00:06:51We are 0 for 4, but here's the thing.
00:06:54Given the record, what it is and it's early season, we've got a lot of season to go.
00:06:57Anyone who's giving out tips like this or winners or whatever, you know, they can't
00:07:02be celebrating in September because everyone gets humbled over time.
00:07:05I think we are going to feel better once we get to December and January, but if you want
00:07:09to fade these to the opposite, take the Costanza approach of the opposite of every instinct
00:07:14you have, every instinct I have and take the opposite five, but these are my picks and
00:07:19here they come.
00:07:20Antonio Gibson, more than 32 and a half combined rushing and receiving yards short week, which
00:07:27means more rotations.
00:07:28You saw what he could do last week with a 49 yard run.
00:07:31That single run would have covered this and then some.
00:07:34He's a guy who's going to see more snaps than usual on a Thursday night.
00:07:37This is a bad Jets run defense.
00:07:39It's bottom 10 by any metric worth its salt.
00:07:41They're going to get him involved.
00:07:42I believe in the screen game that leads to Antonio Gibson having more yards than you
00:07:46expect more than 32 and a half, which leads us to our second pick and I know we all got
00:07:52burned week one pop Douglas best receiver in the summer leads the team and catches and
00:07:56training camps and then whoop just two against the Bengals and up zip against the Seahawks.
00:08:01This is over.
00:08:02They're going to get him the ball or at least try.
00:08:04So I would say more than three targets for pop Douglas in this game, but the Jets think
00:08:09it tackling.
00:08:10They're going to put them in motion.
00:08:11I think they'll get them in quick game concepts and they're going to get the ball to him and
00:08:15he'll do the rest, but at the very least, more than three targets for tomorrow, Douglas.
00:08:19So those are the price pick picks of the week Antonio Gibson, more than 32 and a half combined
00:08:24rushing and receiving yards tomorrow.
00:08:26Douglas more than doesn't matter catches doesn't matter yards more than three targets
00:08:32over at price fix.
00:08:33Okay, here comes James White who you might have mentioned.
00:08:36I might have mentioned this before.
00:08:38He is coaching a part-time role with the Northern Illinois football team that upset Notre Dame
00:08:43on the road a couple weekends ago.
00:08:45So he is coming to us live from Illinois as you'll see for the YouTube folks and I tried
00:08:52to get him to open up a little bit how he celebrated because we were supposed to actually
00:08:55hang out that night and he had a delayed flight yada yada.
00:08:57Anyway, here comes James White Notre Dame Conqueror former Super Bowl champion on the
00:09:02past interference podcast.
00:09:03So, you know him as three times Super Bowl champion Patriots legend future Patriots Hall
00:09:08of Famer James White.
00:09:10I know him as Notre daddy because he is a member of the Northern Illinois football team
00:09:15that took down Notre Dame a couple weekends ago.
00:09:18James, I told the folks afterward of the pot.
00:09:20I'm starting to do this like behind the scenes road trip what it's like to be in my shoes.
00:09:24It's not as interesting as yours.
00:09:25Of course on the games.
00:09:26I mentioned we might have connected with me that well, thank you, but we might have connected
00:09:32and it turns out, you know flight delay, whatever we were going to celebrate your program.
00:09:36You've been working with the seasons big win top five win.
00:09:40How did you celebrate because I never asked you that once you find landed in Cincinnati
00:09:43for the opener and called the Patriots game on the radio.
00:09:46I mean, it was awesome just to see the guys the way they went out and fought just to see
00:09:50the preparation that they had throughout the week going up against a tough tough environment
00:09:55tough opponent, you know, where most people thought they would have been outmatched.
00:09:58They truly believe that they were going to win the football game all along and you could
00:10:02tell from the beginning of the football game, they faced some adversity throughout the game,
00:10:06but withstood the storm and they fought hard and that's what it's all about.
00:10:09But when it comes to it, you've seen it you can you can win that game, but you have plenty
00:10:13games left ahead of you.
00:10:14So you have to keep that same energy and same momentum throughout Mac play in the rest of
00:10:19the season.
00:10:21Okay, so the folks on YouTube can see that you are in the Northern Illinois football
00:10:24facility right now.
00:10:25You got the background, but I want you to speak as if you're at home and tell me the
00:10:28honest truth.
00:10:29Like I can tell you're a coach by that answer.
00:10:31That was very forward-looking.
00:10:32We got to stick around.
00:10:33We got to play hard.
00:10:34But did you have a cocktail?
00:10:35Did you have a beer?
00:10:36Take us as much as you can inside James White's hotel room that night before, you know, you
00:10:39had to go to work Sunday.
00:10:40No cocktail, no beer.
00:10:41It was a late night.
00:10:42I mean, I basically just got there and I watched the rest of the game, you know, in the airport
00:10:54before before I got, you know, on my airplane to, you know, Cincinnati.
00:10:59But this said to the message to all the guys, you know, and a little team works at just
00:11:03to congratulate them on the victory and just to keep building.
00:11:06Like I said, it's a as a program shift and win.
00:11:09And, you know, this type of program, when you beat those types of teams, it means something
00:11:14and it gives those guys confidence going forward.
00:11:16Awesome.
00:11:17So that's another reminder, you know, again, as much as he's three times Super Bowl champion
00:11:21James White, he's also a regular guy using the team works app like many folks do to make
00:11:26sure you look visible and then go back to not working during the week.
00:11:30Shake works to make it look like you've been there and then go back.
00:11:32All right.
00:11:33We are not here to talk college football.
00:11:34We are not here to talk about apps.
00:11:35We're here to talk about Patriots playing on a Thursday night.
00:11:39We are playing the Jets.
00:11:40You and your career, James, were ten and one.
00:11:42So before we get to the new era Patriots, we get into this game against the Jets, who
00:11:46sadly have snapped the Patriots winning streak that dated back to 2015, the second year of
00:11:50your career.
00:11:51I just want to know when you were getting ready for this team that more often than not,
00:11:55again, you didn't just beat you like obliterated and your head coach then well-known, well-documented
00:12:00hated his old team in the Jets.
00:12:03What was preparation like in Jets week and how it was different from, you know, you were
00:12:07playing?
00:12:09Well, the preparation is always the same just as far as practice and the mentality.
00:12:13But I feel like when game day rolls around, it's just like you don't want to be the team
00:12:17to lose to the Jets.
00:12:18You know, you don't understand, you know, how much, you know, Bill Belichick despised
00:12:22of them.
00:12:23And then you start to despise of them some yourself, you know, when you're part of the
00:12:27organization for some time and no matter what their record was, you know, no matter how
00:12:32competitive they might have been, for some reason, a lot of those, we beat them pretty
00:12:36handily sometimes.
00:12:37But even when they weren't good, we had some matches to where it came down, you know, to
00:12:41the fourth quarter because they always had a ton of talent.
00:12:43Maybe they didn't always, you know, play together, but yeah, you always want to, you know, be
00:12:47up and be ready to play the Jets.
00:12:49And I said, never want to lose to.
00:12:52Okay.
00:12:53So what is competitive hate look like for James?
00:12:55But like I get the, okay, I have to play.
00:12:58You're trying to take my head off.
00:12:59That's the defensive job.
00:13:00And you're the one carrying the balls, running back or catching passes.
00:13:02Was that the team you quote unquote hated the most?
00:13:04And if so, what did it look like?
00:13:05Like how pissed?
00:13:06I mean, like I said, I'm a pretty even keeled person.
00:13:11So I would never say I was directly, directly pissed at him, but I just wanted to perform
00:13:18at a high level.
00:13:19And like I said, I wanted to do my job, you know, at the highest level possible, you know,
00:13:23even though the one game that I did lose to him in 2015, like scoring the touchdown, you
00:13:28know, to take the lead or tie it up or whatever it was, you know, towards the end of the game,
00:13:33that meant something to me.
00:13:35I remember was called as soon as the play was called in the huddle, got alerted to it.
00:13:38I knew the ball was coming to me.
00:13:39I had to win in a one on one situation, just taking the onus of that.
00:13:43And you know, that's, that's what it's all about in those type moments in division games.
00:13:47I would say I wouldn't say they were the team that I myself probably hated the most, you
00:13:52know, during, during my career, just because, you know, we didn't lose to him too much,
00:13:56probably have to be in the division, probably Buffalo, because towards the end of my career,
00:14:00they started to, you know, start to get a little bit better.
00:14:03They started to get a few wins on it.
00:14:05So that started to build as far as that rivalry.
00:14:08Okay.
00:14:09Um, is there any moment really quickly, I'm not going to belabor this, but as you said,
00:14:12you're an even killed guy.
00:14:13And that's how it comes across like one moment, like, you're just, you know, you talk smack
00:14:18to the bills, like, was there any, like Matt Milano get something out of you or anybody
00:14:21like that?
00:14:22Um, I never really got anything out of me, but me and Milano will go at it quite a few
00:14:27times because we were matched up a ton, him, Jermaine Edmonds, you know, we would kind
00:14:31of go back and forth or route to pass block and all that.
00:14:34Never, never anything really like chirping, but not, I caught a, what year was that?
00:14:40Might've been 2018, 2018, 2019, one of those years, I caught a, like a wheel route on them,
00:14:47like close by the end zone and Brandon Bolivar scored like the next play, but I caught it
00:14:51on him.
00:14:52I didn't really say it, like say in this space, but I started talking to the crowd a little
00:14:54bit.
00:14:55I don't even know what I said, but you know, just, just being in the moment, you know,
00:14:58playing in Buffalo is always a cool atmosphere.
00:15:00Yeah.
00:15:01They have, they have great fans over there.
00:15:02You know, they're, they're always into it, no matter how good or bad they are.
00:15:05They, they have, they have a different breed of, yeah, yeah.
00:15:08I think everyone is aware of the, uh, events in the parking lots, the fires, jumping out
00:15:12of the tables.
00:15:13Yeah.
00:15:14Yeah.
00:15:15It's also a lot closer on the sidelines.
00:15:17Like people don't realize that for you as players, you know, even when you go sit on
00:15:21the bench, the sideline is supposed to be a safe space.
00:15:24You are 10 feet, 15 feet away from whoever is in the first row, however many tables they
00:15:29broke and fireball shots they've taken anyway, Buffalo's a lot closer and even close to
00:15:33the Met life.
00:15:34One of the thing I wanted to ask you about the jets and just kind of, um, taking this
00:15:36time machine story time here with James white 2019, you guys go on the road, play the jets.
00:15:43It's Monday night game.
00:15:44I second year in the beak.
00:15:45Okay.
00:15:46They steamrolled everybody.
00:15:47This is historic defense, boogeyman, all that.
00:15:49This will be their first real test.
00:15:50Huh?
00:15:51What do I know?
00:15:52Cause Sam Darrell that night, we know seeds ghosts, you guys win 33 to nothing in this
00:15:57game that you dominated becomes more known in the public memory for just that clip that
00:16:02ESPN aired later and caught Sam Donald saying on the sidelines, I'm seeing ghosts out there.
00:16:07What do you remember being in the middle of it?
00:16:09And then afterward, when that clip kind of goes viral in that moment,
00:16:11Well, me in the middle of it, I thought we just, we just controlled the game the entire
00:16:15time and defensively, it's just an excellent performance.
00:16:19And, you know, Bill Belichick always had, he has a great record against rookie quarterbacks
00:16:23and they smell blood in the water, you know, dialing up cover zero, which he couldn't seem
00:16:27to figure out, which I don't see why it's so hard to, to know that there's nobody, nobody
00:16:33in the middle of the field.
00:16:34I mean, most likely a lot of people that were going to be blitz and I don't think, I don't
00:16:38think it's that hard to figure out, but Hey, in that moment in time as a rookie, no things
00:16:44are spinning.
00:16:45Your wheels are turning.
00:16:46You're the top quarterback drafted high expectations going up against a tough defense and yeah,
00:16:51he's going through it at that point in time and it's cool to see him now he's grown from
00:16:55that moment.
00:16:56Look, and he's having a resurgence and that's, that's a cool part about football.
00:17:00Maybe it doesn't work out early on during your career.
00:17:02You bounce around some, you know, probably one of his final opportunities to be a starting
00:17:06quarterback and he's, he's capitalizing on that situation with us as a different topic,
00:17:11which I talked about on Sirius XM early this morning about throwing these young bucks in
00:17:16there too soon before they're actually developed and ready to play.
00:17:20I think Sam Darnold is another great example of that similar to what's happening with Bryson.
00:17:24Yeah.
00:17:25You need, you need to protect him and I, you know, uh, I've since gotten this weird flack
00:17:29from a, just the weirdest corner of Pat's Twitter for praising Jacoby percent for doing
00:17:34a good job of diagnosing defenses, knowing when the blitz is coming, even when he doesn't
00:17:38escaping that pressure because I just don't think I want to throw Drake may behind an
00:17:41offensive line.
00:17:42It's giving a pressure 45% of the time.
00:17:44I don't know.
00:17:45Does that sound weird to you?
00:17:46No, it does not.
00:17:47I actually posted, you know, something from, from my podcast last night saying like the
00:17:52Bryce young situation is just a great example why that's what the pages were not starting
00:17:57Drake may.
00:17:58You don't, there's a lot of uncertain, uncertainty still on that opposite side of the ball.
00:18:03Yeah.
00:18:04Maybe Drake may is a little bit more athletic.
00:18:05Maybe he has a stronger arm than Jacoby, you know, and all that, but no, he hasn't seen
00:18:09some of this stuff.
00:18:10He hasn't dealt with some of these issues and to throw them out there with a line that's
00:18:13not necessarily protecting and a passing game.
00:18:16That's very inconsistent.
00:18:19I think that's hard for me to think he's going to go out there and start shredding, shredding
00:18:22guys that maybe he shows flashes and things of that nature, but I would see it being tough
00:18:28and I could see his confidence being knocked some throughout his rookie season, which I,
00:18:33I wouldn't want.
00:18:34I like the little sample size will be soft from during the preseason.
00:18:38But as we can tell, like some of those other guys had some solid preseasons as well.
00:18:42And listen, no touchdown passes, not throwing for a ton of yards.
00:18:45So it's going to be some growing pains.
00:18:47I'd rather let the guy sit there, compete against the starting defense, which our defense
00:18:51is going to give you, you know, probably more looks than most teams are going to.
00:18:55And you're going to learn a lot of covers, you got to get that figured out so you don't
00:18:59see those out there.
00:19:00You're going to get that, get that handled.
00:19:03And when his time comes, whether it's this season or next year, I think he'll be more
00:19:07quick versus starting week one.
00:19:09Yeah.
00:19:10I mean, look, there's, I am a full Drake May believer was on the record before the draft.
00:19:15Super excited when they drafted him in a way that's not even like I'm rooting for the team
00:19:18on Sunday.
00:19:19It's just, I think that was a wise move and he's a ton of fun to watch.
00:19:21And my job now is to watch him and study and analyze him.
00:19:24You mentioned go.
00:19:25So, and then we'll move on and look ahead to this game.
00:19:27The days after you guys had a good, must've had a good giggle in the locker room about
00:19:31that, right?
00:19:32Cause that had some legs, that story, that line, that idea, that clip.
00:19:35Yeah.
00:19:36I mean, I, I still laugh about, you know, that whole clip that went off of this.
00:19:41It's funny, man, because it's really not that complicated, you know what I mean?
00:19:45It's like you get hit with it once or twice.
00:19:47I mean, look, I mean, it happens all the time and I've seen Lamar Jackson struggle with
00:19:51it.
00:19:52Some would cover zero either last year or the year before, like some teams just don't
00:19:55have an answer for it.
00:19:56But to say you were seeing ghosts and just saying like, we couldn't define an answer
00:20:01for cover zeros.
00:20:02Like he wasn't sure what he was saying, which that's, that's not very good at the court.
00:20:08Yeah.
00:20:09Uh, agreed.
00:20:10Not great.
00:20:11When you can't solve a defense that you're going to see a lot from a team in your division,
00:20:14you're at least going to see twice.
00:20:15Okay.
00:20:16Looking ahead to Thursday night, the difference about this game is not only that the Patriots
00:20:19are coming off a loss, the Jets, their season finale last year, we're not going to talk
00:20:23about that game that was in the snow, but I want to know about the game planning process
00:20:27because there's a lot of calls from people in the media, self-included, Hey, you got
00:20:31to change the offense and whether it's, um, you know, personnel usage or it's protection
00:20:35schemes or it's the amount of quick game that you're running as opposed to these longer
00:20:38developing five-step set drop passing concepts.
00:20:42How much time do they have to do that?
00:20:44Like it's a Thursday night and Jacoby preset made his, you know, basically NFL debut starting
00:20:48debut on a Thursday night and it was a whole new offense, 2016.
00:20:51You remember that game, but is that possible to replicate here?
00:20:53Like how much, how much can you do from your experience playing Thursday night?
00:20:57I mean, it's, it's possible.
00:20:58The coaches just have to stay, you know, extra time at the facility, you know, maybe
00:21:03keeping the quarterbacks or whoever may be to work on that new game plan.
00:21:07But I feel like it's going to be a lot of carryover from the previous week.
00:21:10A lot of the same concepts, unless they truly feel what they did last week, you know, didn't
00:21:14work whatsoever.
00:21:15Then they kind of have to scramble and figure out, you know, what's going to work best against
00:21:19New York Jets.
00:21:20Also, I mean, they could have prepared, you know, two weeks ahead too.
00:21:22They could have worked on the Seahawks, you know, and worked on the Jets last week to
00:21:26where they have no kind of sort of some place that they already had in mind to go up against
00:21:30his jets defense.
00:21:31So it all depends on the coaching staff.
00:21:33I feel like with Mayo, you know, he coached under Bill, I'm sure they worked ahead and
00:21:37were prepared for this.
00:21:38I know for us, it was just walkthroughs all the way up through Wednesday, then, you know,
00:21:43the games on Thursday, just to make sure guys body can recover as much as possible by their
00:21:47performance performance your best on Thursday.
00:21:49Gotcha.
00:21:50Yeah.
00:21:51It's interesting too, because you know, there is that balance of doing too much, but also
00:21:57having the right answer.
00:21:58It's like Alex van Pelt from the opener.
00:21:59I asked him a couple days after you called that game in Cincinnati Patriots win.
00:22:03When you reviewed your first play calling game, you did it a couple times at the Browns,
00:22:06but really since 2009, what did you learn?
00:22:08What did you think?
00:22:09And he says, well, without getting into the details, I need more answers.
00:22:13There were stuff I wanted to call.
00:22:14We just had not practiced or used and he expanded his game plan in week two.
00:22:19So I'm curious what that balance is, but I never thought like, did you do that on occasion
00:22:23install and run stuff for not the next game, but the game after knowing that was a Thursday
00:22:27night?
00:22:28Yeah.
00:22:29I mean, you have a ton of plays at your disposal.
00:22:31You're not going to be able to work on them all.
00:22:33You know, during the practice week, there's only going to be a select few.
00:22:36What I, what I will say with Josh McDaniels, the day before the game, we walked through
00:22:40every possible play, you know, what possible defense you think they might run what they
00:22:45usually run.
00:22:46So there's, you work, you work through it all.
00:22:49So you made sure we were prepared and ready to go for anything that might possibly happen,
00:22:53which they can still throw some different things at you that you might not prepare for.
00:22:56You got to make those adjustments on the sidelines.
00:22:58So there's always a chance that they worked on stuff last week for Seattle.
00:23:02Didn't call it, can call it this week against the other jets.
00:23:05Maybe they have a similar type of look or similar type coverage that you can run out
00:23:08there, run a play or concept to run against that type of defense.
00:23:12So there's always carry over from week to week.
00:23:15You just have to make a slight adjustment, you know, based on the specific thing that
00:23:19that defense does.
00:23:21Gotcha.
00:23:22Yeah.
00:23:22You know, it's funny because we talk about may and percent when to start them.
00:23:26And like you try to find the week or the opponent and yada, yada.
00:23:30And I think an under sold or, you know, discussed point about not just the quality of the opponents
00:23:35and the defenses is the different styles of them, right?
00:23:37Like it's very different going from Cincinnati to Seattle.
00:23:40And now the jets, we're going to play, you know, a lot of too high, like defenses we're
00:23:44doing now, but they're much more quarters based than the Seahawks, the Bengals were.
00:23:47So having the ability from a quarterback standpoint, just to digest that.
00:23:51And then secondarily, the offensive coordinator's ability to script new plays to counter their
00:23:56base defenses, you know, you're going to get, it does feel like it might be a new game plan,
00:24:00which we'll get into here, you know, in 30 seconds.
00:24:02One last question though, about Thursday night, because I look and go, okay, the Patriots
00:24:06have a Thursday night game week three.
00:24:08That is so much better than what they had last year going in a short week.
00:24:13So I think it was Pittsburgh.
00:24:14And so is there anything else we're missing?
00:24:17Is that right?
00:24:17Like, did you care that much playing a Thursday night game early in the season?
00:24:20Just from a physical standpoint, you don't have as much wear on your tires.
00:24:22Well, for me, I, I, I personally, I'm probably in the minority here.
00:24:27I never minded, you know, Thursday night games just because we knew with Belichick,
00:24:32we were getting walkthroughs Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday.
00:24:34So, you know, by Thursday rolled around, I felt like my body, you know, was back.
00:24:38Right.
00:24:39I know everybody's body reacts a little bit differently when it comes to Thursday games.
00:24:43Turf, not turf, grass and all that and travel.
00:24:46I feel like traveling for the game makes it a little bit tough when you're not playing
00:24:49a home game.
00:24:50Maybe, you know, for the Jets.
00:24:52So is it the game in New York?
00:24:53Is that?
00:24:55Yeah, it's in New York today.
00:24:57Yeah.
00:24:58So it's not, it's not far, far travel.
00:25:00So that shouldn't be that, that big of an issue for the Patriots.
00:25:02I feel like that can be a factor if you have to travel, you know, pretty far on a short
00:25:06notice, but yeah, I never really minded it as long as you did whatever you could to make
00:25:11sure your body was getting back.
00:25:12Right.
00:25:12And the coaches gave you enough time to prepare.
00:25:15They draw up a pretty solid game plan.
00:25:18I never really had too many issues with Thursday night games.
00:25:20I feel like I typically perform pretty, pretty well.
00:25:24Yeah, you bounce back.
00:25:25I know we're talking to slate, you know, not a fan and he's also the PA rep.
00:25:30So what his words carry a little bit more, he's representing the locker room and this
00:25:33is part of, you know, CBA negotiations.
00:25:35And then Gerard this week was like, I don't really care like Thursday night games are
00:25:39fine by me.
00:25:40I like them.
00:25:40You got to go.
00:25:41And I don't know if that's the player in him still speaking as we get deeper in his coaching
00:25:45career.
00:25:45Maybe that changes.
00:25:46Maybe it doesn't.
00:25:47Or he just takes the line to bill off and did.
00:25:49Hey, whatever it is, it is like, yeah, right.
00:25:55Yeah, it's nice.
00:25:56You get like a mini bye week too.
00:25:58So you play Thursday.
00:26:00Yeah, a few days off over the weekend.
00:26:02So you get a few extra days on the back end, watching football, relaxed at home.
00:26:06So that's what I like about it as well.
00:26:08Okay.
00:26:08So as I mentioned, the Patriots are playing at the jets and I've got some family in town.
00:26:14They might go to the game.
00:26:15And if they do, James, I'll tell you, there's one place that I'm going to go.
00:26:18Just like the Patriots had with you when it came to a two minute drill for me.
00:26:21I don't have James.
00:26:22I have game time because game time right now is offering you the ability to basically find
00:26:25$20 in your pocket with code CLNS.

00:27:02You get incredible deals.
00:27:03So go to game time right now, as I have before again, family to football games.
00:27:07Myself in the socks, going to the Celtics when I'm out going to the finals as a media
00:27:10member.
00:27:11This is where I go and you should too.
00:27:12So download, download the game time app today, create an account, use code CLNS for that
00:27:17free $20 off in your pocket with your first purchase terms do apply.
00:27:20You can just create an account, redeem code CLNS for $20 off, download game time today.
00:27:26What time is it?
00:27:27Game time.
00:27:28Okay.
00:27:29Almost 24 hours till the Patriots will have game time against the Jets.
00:27:32In case you missed it, they're a one in one.
00:27:34They're playing their third game in 11 days.
00:27:36Their last game, 2417 win at Tennessee before that they lose 32 to 19 at San Francisco on
00:27:43Monday night football.
00:27:44The game that wasn't that close by DV away.
00:27:46And it's still early in the season.
00:27:48Numbers don't matter a whole lot.
00:27:49Here are their rankings.
00:27:50They're 19th and offense, 23rd in defense, 11th and special teams.
00:27:56Patriots by comparison, 15th and offense, 17th on defense and their special team.
00:28:00So it took a hit, excuse me, because they had a field goal block.
00:28:04Obviously Aaron Rogers is a story 31 to 51 so far, 343 yards, three touchdowns, a pick
00:28:10pass rating of about 92.
00:28:13So when the Jets have the ball, James, I want to start here.
00:28:18There's going to be a big player in the middle of that defense.
00:28:21It's missing strong Bentley.
00:28:22You played with for a little bit at the end, and I didn't really discuss his absence last
00:28:26time out because the news had just broken and I was doing a film episode on Pat Seahawks.
00:28:32But without him, I see your second most important defender.
00:28:35When it comes to defending the run, one of your most instinctive players, one of your
00:28:39smartest and a guy that's on the field for almost 100% of the snaps.
00:28:43What am I missing?
00:28:44And what will the Patriots be missing without him moving forward?
00:28:47Yeah, they're missing a physical player, a great mental player, a leader, a guy who's
00:28:51been there playing a lot of big football games.
00:28:53Juwan Bentley is a very good football player.
00:28:55So they're definitely missing an important piece of the two people that are going to
00:28:59be filling in sort of his spots July to buy and Rayquan McMillan, which I have full confidence
00:29:04in him when he's healthy.
00:29:05He's a good playmaker, a little bit smaller than Juwan Bentley, maybe a little less physical,
00:29:09but he's a little bit more of a sideline, a sideline player.
00:29:12But I know he's a guy who's excited to get this opportunity has missed the last couple
00:29:16seasons.
00:29:16So I think he'll take full advantage.
00:29:18It has to go beyond those two.
00:29:19Then that's when the question marks kind of has to arise for me.
00:29:22If any of those other linebackers have to step in, I haven't seen too much of those
00:29:27guys.
00:29:28So, yeah, and it just has some solid backs, too.
00:29:31And you got Breeze Hall.
00:29:33You got my guy, Braylon Allen from Wisconsin, the bigger dude.
00:29:35So, yeah, I think it's going to be very important for those linebackers to make sure they get
00:29:39downhill, get those guys on the ground because they have some talent in that backfield.
00:29:44Raylan Edwards, youngest NFL player.
00:29:46I think I read ever to score a touchdown week one.
00:29:48Yeah, yeah, like 20.
00:29:50It's crazy.
00:29:51How does that make you feel?
00:29:53It makes you feel pretty old, man.
00:29:55And he's a lot bigger than me, too.
00:29:57He looks like he's 30 years old.
00:30:00As it was once said to me, and I was covering Penn State, I don't know which player.
00:30:03They were describing your offensive line 16, to be fair.
00:30:06And you obviously weren't there anymore.
00:30:07But they said they got a lot of these homegrown, corn-fed Wisconsin boys.
00:30:12Like, you know, that's just there's something in the water.
00:30:17Yeah, they feed them, including Edwards there.
00:30:19What's interesting, though, is, you know, I talk about Aaron Rodgers is back and he
00:30:22deserves a grace period.
00:30:23I think like any player coming off of a catastrophic injury.
00:30:26He's also 40.
00:30:27We know the deal with Aaron.
00:30:28Well, we don't.
00:30:29We generally don't know the deal with Aaron.
00:30:30But on the football field, he's taking time to come back.
00:30:34So the Jets on offense, I mentioned, you know, by DVOA so far, it's only through two games,
00:30:3819th in offense.
00:30:39That comes down to a split of 20th and passing and 23rd rushing.
00:30:44So neither side, whatever they choose to do, is overwhelming teams.
00:30:47The surprise to me, though, in addition to that running game, Brees Hall is an excellent
00:30:50back, is their offensive line has been pretty good in pass protection.
00:30:53It's just not knocking people back in the run game.
00:30:56So when you look at the run game aside from, OK, we're going to play Raekwon McMillan more.
00:31:00Is this a game understanding Rodgers is still coming back?
00:31:03Are you more inclined to stack the box or which area are you more comfortable with defending
00:31:07the Jets against the pass or when they want to run the ball?
00:31:09Yeah, I'm more inclined with stacking that box.
00:31:12I think got Christian Gonzalez.
00:31:14He's a guy who can hold his own who I think you hold his own against, you know, their
00:31:17guy on the outside over there, Garrett Wilson.
00:31:20Maybe maybe you double him some.
00:31:22But everybody else, I'm going to let those guys try and beat me.
00:31:24I like Alan Lazar has had a rough start.
00:31:26Mike Williams has had a rough start over there.
00:31:29They drafted Malachi Corley.
00:31:30He hasn't done too much yet.
00:31:31So I don't have a problem leaving, you know, Gonzo one on one.
00:31:35I mean, Garrett Wilson is going to win some and Gonzo is going to win some of those matches
00:31:39or you try and double up sometimes to try and take him away because nobody else is really
00:31:42proving himself.
00:31:44And Brees Hall, he's a guy he's he's a home run hitter at any given time if you give him
00:31:48a crease.
00:31:49So I just be sure to slow that run game down and make it tough on Aaron Rodgers and create
00:31:54some pressure on him.
00:31:55You know, the one guy on our team who's created pressure is Keon White.
00:31:58Everybody else hasn't necessarily done too much in that aspect.
00:32:01So I hope for somebody else to, you know, come off the other side or up the middle to
00:32:06create some some pass rush to make it tough on Aaron Rodgers tomorrow night.
00:32:11Yeah, I'm with you.
00:32:12I think, you know, not only just because they can run the ball, they can use your formula
00:32:16against you, right?
00:32:17I would test your run defense to Thursday night.
00:32:19You're down your your best linebacker.
00:32:21Your defensive tackles are playing 70% of more of the stamps, which is an exceedingly
00:32:25high number for the tackles.
00:32:27And so I want to probe that because then if I get an early lead and control the game,
00:32:30you can't play catch up right now the way that the Patriots are built in their adjustments,
00:32:33which we'll get to when we talk about the Patriots offense.
00:32:36But aside from, you know, I think we're in silent agreement here like Christian Gonzalez,
00:32:40Shadow and Garrett Wilson is where you would start in the passing game.
00:32:43Yes.
00:32:43Yep.
00:32:44Okay.
00:32:45All right.
00:32:45Good.
00:32:46Done with that.
00:32:46The next part you mentioned pressure is the biggest one with Rodgers, right?
00:32:49Because, you know, if you let him know Gonzalez is shadowing Garrett Wilson, the Patriots
00:32:55have shown they've got changeups to say, okay, even when he's in the slot, we could be in
00:32:58zone.
00:32:58We can disguise that a little bit.
00:33:00What they did not do, though, last week against Seattle was disguised their blitz.
00:33:04And I say this for two reasons, one of which is to say that Gino Smith was never really
00:33:08bothered.
00:33:08Yes, he was set three times his numbers against the blitz, 10 of 12, 171 yards, a touchdown
00:33:14in the sack, and they spun the dial.
00:33:16Like if you rewatch that game, you're seeing cover two creepers, simulated pressures, a
00:33:21couple of traditional zone blitzes.
00:33:22And again, I mentioned that the Jets are good in pass protection.
00:33:25So I don't think you can count on a standard four man rush to get to Rodgers and certainly
00:33:29not confuse him.
00:33:31Are you blitzing him?
00:33:32What do you need to see to disguise and maybe things that made it hard on you as a running
00:33:36back going?
00:33:37I don't know where the blitz is coming from because they're doing X, Y or Z.
00:33:40What can the Patriots do there?
00:33:42I mean, I think they just continue to do what they do.
00:33:44Just spin the dial a little bit.
00:33:46Sometimes it's line it up, run it.
00:33:48Sometimes it's line it up, show the blitz, drop out of it.
00:33:51Sometimes it's, you know, show the blitz.
00:33:53Maybe he thinks you're not blitzing, but you're actually blitzing.
00:33:56He's got to spin it up a little bit.
00:33:58Sometimes I hear some of the good defenses like sometimes you're going to disguise.
00:34:02Sometimes you just show it and make him think you're disguising, but it's exactly what you're
00:34:06showing him.
00:34:06So I think that's what you could do for some of these good quarterbacks.
00:34:09Obviously, he's going to get you some.
00:34:10He's played this game at a high level for a very long time.
00:34:14I'm sure more than half the time he's going to know what the defense is in.
00:34:18At the end of the day, you just got to go out there, cover, rush, stop the run, do whatever
00:34:23you can because the good quarterbacks are going to know.
00:34:26You're not going to confuse him more than half the snaps.
00:34:30I'd imagine he's going to know a lot of the times based on watching tape and going up
00:34:34against a Bill Belichick type of defense.
00:34:37I feel like he'll have a good beat on it.
00:34:39But if guys handle their assignments and when they're one-on-one matches, it doesn't
00:34:43really matter if he knows what we're in.
00:34:44If you cover those guys up.
00:34:46Right, right.
00:34:47I know that was something I would say even before I got to do this professionally.
00:34:51Like I was so focused on that mental game, right?
00:34:54The X's and O's and the disguise and the covers, the different blitzes.
00:34:56And it's like that's all well and fun.
00:34:58And this was how I described it last week.
00:35:01Gino Smith looking at the defense, doing all these different things.
00:35:04He's like, OK, cool.
00:35:05I'm going to throw it to DK Metcalf where you can't cover.
00:35:07That's my plan.
00:35:08And you probably know that's coming.
00:35:10It's going to work anyway because he's a 6'5 freak who's got the strength of two men.
00:35:15And it's just going to body out Christian Gonzalez.
00:35:17He did like an OK job against him.
00:35:19It wasn't great.
00:35:20But I think Garrett Wilson is someone that Gonzalez has shown that he can cover a little
00:35:22bit better.
00:35:23I mean, even Steph, right?
00:35:24You remember 20.
00:35:25This is a tough time for you.
00:35:26But 2020, Steph Gilmore gets bodied by a younger DK Metcalf.
00:35:29And all of us are like, oh, my God.
00:35:32Like he's just he's just a different guy.
00:35:34Speaking of the blitz, though, Aaron Rodgers escorted PFF.
00:35:37I think they have a little trouble identifying blitzes at PFF because their numbers never
00:35:41align with mine.
00:35:42And I am very simple.
00:35:43Are you rushing five or more?
00:35:45But here are their numbers when they identify blitz.
00:35:48Rodgers so far this year is 5 of 10 for 47 yards.
00:35:50And that's it.
00:35:52It's a tiny sample.
00:35:53It's only two games.
00:35:54But I do wonder if you do have the confidence like you and I have in Gonzalez and Garrett
00:35:58Wilson that you do bring a little bit more pressure.
00:36:01Understanding Tyron Smith's at left tackle.
00:36:02He's doing a good job.
00:36:03There are no weak spots between Elijah Vera Tucker, the young center.
00:36:07They got out of Minnesota not long ago.
00:36:09I can't remember their other guard.
00:36:10But like Ken White's not going to have a matchup he can pick on.
00:36:13Are you OK blitzing Rodgers maybe more than the Patriots would want to blitz Aaron Rodgers?
00:36:18Yeah, I'm OK with doing this because those other receivers just haven't shown me enough
00:36:23just yet for them to really threaten me.
00:36:25I fly the other corners on the team.
00:36:27Jonathan Jones, whoever may be Marco Wilson, Marcus Jones.
00:36:30I feel like they can hold up and coverage if we decide to blitz.
00:36:34And I think it creates one on one for those other guys who haven't been able to create
00:36:38pressure on the defensive front.
00:36:39Now you get one on ones.
00:36:40Maybe you have a better opportunity to win.
00:36:42Keon White, like I said, he's been that one guy who's been disrupted in every single game.
00:36:47Teachers hasn't been out there.
00:36:48Has the teachers just banged up?
00:36:51Yeah, he's a little banged up playing between like 30 and 45 percent of stamps.
00:36:54Yeah.
00:36:54So I know when he's back healthy, he's a guy who can, you know, get edges and make plays.
00:36:59And you know, if he's out there, he can make plays too.
00:37:02But, you know, we'll see if those guys step up and can create some havoc as well,
00:37:07because you're going to need it.
00:37:08They have some solid offensive linemen, some veteran players.
00:37:11And, you know, Aaron Rodgers is great at getting the ball out of his hands
00:37:14extremely quickly, too.
00:37:15So that's that's kind of the trick match that you kind of have to fight because
00:37:20the Russian five, a lot of one on ones on our side of a guy gets a step on.
00:37:24Aaron's going to probably hit him.
00:37:25And hey, who knows how big of a play that can turn into.
00:37:29The other, you know, tactic or point I would make in coverage, because, again,
00:37:33I think the Patriots, if this is a draw up front with the running game,
00:37:37you can survive with that, especially if you hold free, halted, you know,
00:37:41no explosives, whatever it is in the ground without Juwan Bentley.
00:37:43That's a big win.
00:37:43I think that kind of goes without saying there's not a lot of intrigue there for me.
00:37:46But in the back end, we'll go to the tactic that everyone loves to cite
00:37:50when it came to Belichick's genius is that this has not been known for a while.
00:37:53They didn't really do it a lot at the end where you double the number one
00:37:56and then put your number one corner on their number two receiver,
00:38:00which in this case would be Alan Lazard, who is not playing good football,
00:38:03but has seen the same number of targets or he might be one off or two from Garrett Wilson,
00:38:08which is to say when we double Garrett Wilson,
00:38:11that would probably going to discourage Rodgers more than even Christian Gonzalez would
00:38:15from taking a one on one shot downfield and giving his guys a chance because
00:38:17you're just not throwing one on two.
00:38:19But if he looks at the other side and he's encouraged by Lazard,
00:38:22who clearly has his confidence, well, your Patriots feel great about that.
00:38:26To me, I like that also as a coverage change up,
00:38:29doubling Wilson and then putting Gonzalez on the opposite side.
00:38:32No, I like that as well.
00:38:33I know we've done that a ton ever since my rookie season.
00:38:36I know exactly the clip that Bill was talking about.
00:38:39He said we would put Rivas on number two receiver and whatever,
00:38:43go double up number one receiver with, hey, whether it was Logan Ryan,
00:38:47Brandon Brown or Malcolm Butler, whoever it may be.
00:38:50That's a great strategy as well.
00:38:52I think you just continue to throw different looks at it.
00:38:54I don't think it can continue to be the same thing every third down or
00:38:58every time you do it.
00:38:59I would just try and mix it up some, give those receivers some different looks.
00:39:03And I think that gives those receivers a little bit of trouble.
00:39:06So they don't know who's going to be matching up with them every time.
00:39:09Throw some different body types at them to throw them off.
00:39:11So yeah, yeah, it happened.
00:39:14It's one in 2014.
00:39:15You hear people cite it all the time.
00:39:17Like, oh my God, this is genius.
00:39:18I'm like, yeah, we saw it a ton, like it happened.
00:39:21But at the end, you know, 18 and 19, aside from Sammy Watkins,
00:39:25I could say big Tyreek was a different, different beast.
00:39:27I was in the AFC championship game.
00:39:29It was more often.
00:39:30He just blanketed the number one.
00:39:31And that was that because ideally that's what you want to do.
00:39:34Devote minimal resources to getting maximum effect.
00:39:36Like that was great value.
00:39:37Anyway, people love that tactic.
00:39:38I think it could come back.
00:39:39I think it'd be a good weapon on Thursday.
00:39:40Anything else you missed Jets offense versus Patriots defense.
00:39:43So you're keeping an eye on.
00:39:46I think that's about it.
00:39:47Just don't give up any explosive plays in the run game.
00:39:50I think that that'll give the Jets a lot of relief
00:39:52because they're passing aim is kind of similar to ours right now.
00:39:55They know they have one big one big time weapon who
00:39:59he definitely can make a big play at any given time.
00:40:01But everybody else, I said, has been very inconsistent.
00:40:04And it seemed like Rodgers gets a little frustrated,
00:40:06especially with Lazard, you know, one of his former teammates.
00:40:08When he tends to drop the ball or something, he shows his frustration.
00:40:12So they're trying to get it going.
00:40:14So don't give up any explosive plays in the run game.
00:40:18All right.
00:40:18Well, the Patriots have the ball.
00:40:20You might have missed this or just didn't sink in when I said
00:40:23the Patriots right now are 15th in offense by DV away,
00:40:27which is not even necessarily carried by the running game,
00:40:31because by DV away, which is now probably all of your
00:40:33confidence is going to be sucked out of the statistic.
00:40:35I'm going to keep citing when I tell you they're only 16th and
00:40:38rushing and they're actually 17th and passing when you account
00:40:41for opponent and yards and situations, everything else
00:40:43that goes into, I would say the best catch all stat that we have.
00:40:47The Jets defense, 26th against the run, 22nd against the pass.
00:40:52Now the storyline, because the Patriots lost and the receivers
00:40:55only caught three balls against the Seahawks has been, oh my
00:40:57God, what do you do?
00:40:58The passing game, yada, yada, yada.
00:41:00I care more about the pass protection than the passes being
00:41:03caught at this point, because you can feed Hunter Henry as
00:41:05they did and still win.
00:41:06They almost did.
00:41:07But what is your chief adjustment to get the receivers going
00:41:10to get this passing game in a place where you can damn up
00:41:13pressure a little bit better and spread the ball around?
00:41:16I mean, it's just design a few more plays to get guys like
00:41:19Pop Douglas and and poke involved.
00:41:22I think whether it's RPOs, whether it's screen passes, just
00:41:25get the ball in their hands, you know, as quick as possible.
00:41:27The office line is not going to hold up.
00:41:30I'm going to try and get those guys the ball as quick and as
00:41:32soon as possible.
00:41:33Like I was at, I was at two training camp practices.
00:41:37I saw the way Pop Douglas was catching almost every pass in
00:41:40the team drill.
00:41:41So to me, I mean, it seems like he had a good camp and he's
00:41:44proved that, you know, he could be that, you know, Julie
00:41:46Edelman type guy where move them all around, shift, motion
00:41:49them, you know, get them some different looks, get them some
00:41:51easy access zone catches and let them let them go out there
00:41:54and run.
00:41:54That's what our offense was predicated off of.
00:41:56And when I was there, it wasn't, you know, a bunch of shots
00:41:59down the field or anything.
00:42:00I mean, we had them, we hit them.
00:42:02But the majority of it was, you know, 5, 10 yards and under
00:42:05get the ball, the guys and let them work.
00:42:07So I love to see a ton more of that.
00:42:09I said, those guys, like it doesn't have to be 30, 30 pass
00:42:13completions a game or anything like that.
00:42:15But I very well think Pop Douglas should be getting at
00:42:18least six or seven targets a game.
00:42:20I think he's he's earned that right.
00:42:23I agree.
00:42:24And here's some good news on that front.
00:42:26One, you know, drive has been public about we need to get the
00:42:29ball downfield.
00:42:30I would say when I look at the Seattle game, I just see it.
00:42:32It was probably obvious to obvious time and space, right?
00:42:35After sudden change, you get to midfield.
00:42:36Those are times that people take shots.
00:42:38You can replace the explosive plays of 30, 40 yards a chunk
00:42:42if you get them, not through the year, but after the catch.
00:42:45Right.
00:42:45That's what Pop Douglas is good at.
00:42:46Like that, that I think is easier to manufacture.
00:42:49And to that point, it's not just calling what I said for more
00:42:52quick game screens, picker out combinations.
00:42:55RPO is something I didn't even mention.
00:42:56I think is a good point by you.
00:42:58The Jets right now are not a good tackling defense.
00:43:00They've with 27 times and are the sixth worst tackling
00:43:05defense in the league right now.
00:43:06Something I don't think is going to be helped by one, two
00:43:09practices this week going into a Thursday night.
00:43:12So what age did you see?
00:43:13Because you watch Jets Titans, too, in that regard.
00:43:15And how else do you exploit a bad tackling defense?
00:43:19Yeah, I mean, I think it's getting the ball to your
00:43:21playmakers in space.
00:43:22As we just kind of said, Calvin really had a jet suite where
00:43:25he just got to the edge and scored.
00:43:27No Tony Pollard made some plays in the flat where he got 10
00:43:30yards after the catch before somebody even touched you.
00:43:33So to me, as simple as that short week, they're not
00:43:35correcting that.
00:43:36You're not probably going to have any pads on.
00:43:38You're not working on any tackling.
00:43:39That's not changing very, very quickly.
00:43:42And if you watch the game the first week when they play
00:43:45San Fran, I mean, San Fran is not taking a ton of shots
00:43:48down the field.
00:43:48They're bread and butters.
00:43:49Hand the ball off.
00:43:50Get the ball to your guys.
00:43:51Debo, you know, use check.
00:43:53Kittle, get it to him quickly and let him work.
00:43:55See if those guys can tackle you.
00:43:57So I think there's just defense.
00:43:59I know I've come into the year.
00:44:00I had him being like one of the top defenses.
00:44:02But right now it doesn't, you know, it doesn't look like
00:44:05that so far.
00:44:05So I think offensively, you guys, they should be looking
00:44:08at their chops.
00:44:08Romandre should be looking at his chops.
00:44:10I told him you should be looking at his chops.
00:44:12Are you getting me getting that overfield, man?
00:44:14You gotta gotta make a pay.
00:44:17Yeah, now we're going to get to the run game in a second
00:44:19because there are more numbers that you dive just a little
00:44:22deeper.
00:44:23Just check certain rankings that are helpful, including
00:44:25the fact that, again, they're just they're missing tackles.
00:44:27The other part I want to say is this because the Patriots
00:44:30have not called a lot of play action.
00:44:32Their rate in Cincinnati was 17 percent.
00:44:34It was 20 percent against Seattle.
00:44:36That's low for an older, I don't want to say older
00:44:39offense, but an offense that had the bones of an old school
00:44:42Shanahan offense.
00:44:42Wide zone boots off of that.
00:44:44It's lower than expected.
00:44:45I think it's because they knew they couldn't pass protect.
00:44:48The Jets passers right now is not very good.
00:44:50Like you just lost Jermaine Johnson, who started all last
00:44:53year, former first round.
00:44:54Only got a green brush.
00:44:56Exactly.
00:44:57And then Hassan Reddick's not walking through that door.
00:44:59Quinton Williams right now is the only guy on defense that
00:45:02I'm worried about that identifies, OK, we need to
00:45:04double team him.
00:45:05We need to use trap blocks.
00:45:07We need to use wham runs.
00:45:08We need to use whatever draws screens, et cetera, to worry
00:45:11about their 26th at PFF, their 25th by pass rush win rate.
00:45:15That to me is like we can run play action and not be worried
00:45:20about Jacoby reset, turning his head around and being like,
00:45:22oh, shit, I have to run away right now.
00:45:24You know what I mean?
00:45:25I think it's helpful here.
00:45:27Yeah, definitely.
00:45:27And I thought that was going to be their M.O.
00:45:30throughout the years.
00:45:30Run the ball, play action, whether that's shots or just
00:45:33play action, get the ball five to ten yards past the line of
00:45:36scrimmage.
00:45:37I thought they were going to do a ton of that.
00:45:38You know, maybe that's a lack of confidence in the offensive
00:45:41line.
00:45:41You know, but I mean, if you're running the ball that well,
00:45:44you would think that that will work.
00:45:46You know, when you run and play action, it makes the defenders
00:45:50think it's run.
00:45:50This makes it a little bit more of a easier pass block for
00:45:53those guys.
00:45:54I think they need to mix that in a little bit more because the
00:45:56amount of success you have in the running game, I would just
00:45:59imagine there's got to be, you know, making those linebackers
00:46:02step up and get some easy action.
00:46:04We should do it a ton.
00:46:06You know, any tight end, like bring up, make a little power
00:46:08play, rather than ride the scene, you know, fifteen, twenty
00:46:11yards or sometimes he'll break it for a touchdown.
00:46:13So you got Hunter Henry, you got guys like that.
00:46:16They can make it make plays or send your slot guys across the
00:46:19middle too.
00:46:20I think there needs to be a much heavier dose of that
00:46:23throughout the year.
00:46:25Would you, you know, someone who's watched the Patriots
00:46:27knows the offensive line struggles.
00:46:29I've said it.
00:46:29I'll say it again.
00:46:30Forty-five percent pressure rate, and this is not just
00:46:34standing back, patting the ball, cradling it, trying to burp it
00:46:37like a baby, and then getting rid of it.
00:46:38This is instantaneous right in his face.
00:46:41Whatever the past plays, would you open?
00:46:43Do you have enough confidence to open with enough play action
00:46:46plays like this feels to me, James, when you guys were
00:46:49struggling to throw the ball, your better run teams under
00:46:53Bill, it'd be like, we're going to do the opposite of what you
00:46:55expect right away.
00:46:57And that to me would be a lot of play action in this opening
00:46:59draft.
00:47:00Yeah, I'd be open to doing that.
00:47:02Like I said, teams are going to be anticipating the Patriots
00:47:05run the ball probably 60, 60, 65 percent of the time until,
00:47:09you know, they really prove they can throw the ball down the
00:47:11field and teams are going to start to stack the box or just
00:47:14commit to the run until maybe you throw the ball over our
00:47:17heads or at least try to.
00:47:19So yeah, play action early on the football game.
00:47:21I believe it'll work.
00:47:22You'd be able to create a chunk play early on the football
00:47:25game to, like I said, either a Hunter Henry popped up with
00:47:28Jalen Polk.
00:47:29You think outside zone, send somebody on a cross or double
00:47:32move, whatever it may be.
00:47:34I think that's a very viable option early on this football
00:47:37game against the Jets, especially a team that can't
00:47:39create pressure.
00:47:40I mean, I wouldn't be worried too much about the edges this
00:47:43week and the interior is what I'd be worried about with
00:47:45Quinn and Williams.
00:47:46Everybody else, I think they can hold their own.
00:47:48Yeah.
00:47:49And we'll see about Caden Wallace who might start at left
00:47:51tackle again.
00:47:51We don't have the final injury report here, but it doesn't
00:47:54look good playing, playing tomorrow and having a bad
00:47:57mispractice yesterday when it was walked through.
00:47:58And that's exactly what happened to the area.
00:48:00Low.
00:48:00One other point on that that I wanted to make CJ Mosley was
00:48:04also on the injury report for the Jets.
00:48:06One of linebackers that I know Belichick respected and talked
00:48:08about more than anybody that you guys face.
00:48:11If you have a replacement there who has to combat play action,
00:48:14but has been told all week they want to run the ball.
00:48:16They want to run the ball.
00:48:17They had a 76% run rate on first down of the opener.
00:48:20It was above 60 again against Seattle like this.
00:48:23The team first down neutral downs wants to run the ball.
00:48:25I think that could help a little bit more too.
00:48:28But pounding the rock does as well because the Jets run
00:48:30defense is not very good.
00:48:32Their fifth worst run defense right now.
00:48:33According to PFF, like these numbers are shocking.
00:48:36James, I was with you going.
00:48:37This will be one of the best defenses in football.
00:48:40What beyond just the Patriots loading up in big bodies like
00:48:43how do you attack this run defense with the run schemes
00:48:47that they have because they're they've shown they can run
00:48:49wide zone and plenty of other stuff too.
00:48:51Yeah, I mean just continue to do what you're doing.
00:48:53Wide zones killed them the first week with San Fran.
00:48:56Like Jordan Mason was having a field day.
00:48:58Obviously, just getting down here, breaking tackles,
00:49:01running through arm tackles.
00:49:02It just seems like the sense of urgency and the discipline
00:49:06when it comes to the Jets isn't there as of right now.
00:49:09You can take full advantage of that.
00:49:10I think the offensive line should play aggressive.
00:49:12They should play with confidence.
00:49:14Even if Cade Wallace is the guy that starts the left tackle,
00:49:16I feel like he should play confident as well.
00:49:18Seeing some of the clips that he has played in to a physical
00:49:22and a tough football player.
00:49:24I feel like he has a great opportunity to go out there.
00:49:26If you get the start at left tackle, go out there
00:49:29and pose your will.
00:49:30I think for them, I said outside zones, draws,
00:49:33inside zones, downhill runs, make them defend it.
00:49:37I mean, even I know CJ Moses is a great football player.
00:49:40Got to compete against him quite a few times,
00:49:41but even him, Quincy Williams, they haven't impacted
00:49:44the game as much as what they've had
00:49:46in the last several years.
00:49:47So even if they're in there, I'm still,
00:49:50I'm going straight at them.
00:49:51I said, we can start with play action early
00:49:53just to keep them on their toes.
00:49:54But then once we get into it, I'm going to see
00:49:57if you guys are going to slow this run game down.
00:49:59So I'm going to ask you a question for me
00:50:03because I want to nerd out with you for a second.
00:50:05But the Patriots ran, I talked about this Monday,
00:50:07but I didn't show it.
00:50:08A couple of pin and pulls that went for a good distance
00:50:12and you saw your guy, number 60, haul ass around the corner
00:50:15that you did not see a whole lot when you were playing with him.
00:50:18Yeah.
00:50:19Did that catch your attention?
00:50:20Do you care about that anyway?
00:50:21Because I was like, oh yeah, of course, David Andrews
00:50:24can pull, you know, and he was good.
00:50:26Get my guy on the move, man.
00:50:28He's versatile.
00:50:28He can get out there in the open field and hold his on me.
00:50:31He's done it plenty of times for me,
00:50:33catching screen passes, getting out there in front of me.
00:50:35Now, so it's a similar type thing.
00:50:37You pull them, get them on the edge, get an angle,
00:50:39you know, get fit up on linebacker, safety corner,
00:50:42whoever may be, you know, do more of it.
00:50:45I mean, that's what like Sam Fran does.
00:50:46They pull all different types of people.
00:50:48They give you different looks.
00:50:49I feel like the more runs you can have in your arsenal,
00:50:52it's hard for the teams to game plan against you
00:50:54versus just running outside zone, inside zone.
00:50:57Teams can start to get a beat on that.
00:50:58You start, you know, pulling different guys.
00:51:00Then teams really had to think.
00:51:02Linebackers hesitate just a second.
00:51:04Then, hey, you know, David Andrews is right up on you.
00:51:07Ramond Drake gets up underneath it
00:51:08or bounces outside, however it may be.
00:51:11I like it, man.
00:51:12And I talked to David during, you know,
00:51:15the training camp practice that I went to.
00:51:16He's like, it's cool.
00:51:17The different amount of run plays that they have
00:51:19to just seem a little bit more, you know,
00:51:21simplified or to the way he likes to play
00:51:23compared to the last couple of years.
00:51:24So I think that they're confident, you know,
00:51:27in the plan that's being put in there,
00:51:28especially as far as run game,
00:51:30as it is the passing game.
00:51:31It just has to, has to evolve and be more consistent.
00:51:34Yeah. You know, I don't think it's a hot take
00:51:37to say a lot of guys on the offensive side
00:51:39are much happier than they were the last two years.
00:51:41And we still have 15 games to play.
00:51:44Yeah. No mystery.
00:51:46Yeah. Yeah.
00:51:47Last thing I'll say.
00:51:48And then if there's anything else we missed,
00:51:49you know, we didn't talk a lot about Hunter Henry
00:51:51and Austin Hooper and the Patriots
00:51:52have had better success rates going to tight ends
00:51:55than they do with three receivers.
00:51:56But for the most part, as you and I just called on,
00:51:58Pop Douglas has to be a part of this plan.
00:52:00So if you don't trust them to win outside
00:52:01and that I would understand a little bit,
00:52:04then you have to play more 11 personnel versus 12,
00:52:06which is going to lead me to my other point
00:52:08of sometimes they'll just go with one receiver
00:52:10because their most successful groupings
00:52:12have all had a six offensive linemen.
00:52:14And then if you include them as a tight end,
00:52:15sometimes it's two, other times it's three.
00:52:18And I look at this and go,
00:52:19just keep it simple, stupid.
00:52:20You know, like when you beef up
00:52:21and run behind all these guys,
00:52:23their success rate was over 71% against Cincinnati.
00:52:26It was even higher against Seattle.
00:52:27It's all bad run defense.
00:52:29Beef up, have some counters off that,
00:52:31you know, some play action and boot stuff.
00:52:32To me, that just seems like not low hanging fruit,
00:52:35but something you at least have to test out.
00:52:37The Jets stand you up fine.
00:52:38Like you have other counters to go to,
00:52:40but I think they're going to go more six offensive linemen
00:52:42and frankly should.
00:52:44Yeah, it's worked.
00:52:45It worked against Cincinnati, it worked last week.
00:52:47I know, I think they said they've run it
00:52:4925 out of 26 plays out of the big personnel.
00:52:52So teams are going to be anticipating the run.
00:52:54So have some play actions off of it.
00:52:56Maybe have what we used to call a pistol route
00:52:59for the single receiver that's in that formation.
00:53:01Get them isolated on a safety break
00:53:03to whatever pylon, create a shot that way.
00:53:06So I think the way they've established it so far,
00:53:09I think that's going to pose a threat
00:53:11for teams throughout the entire year
00:53:12because not many teams are doing this anymore.
00:53:14So it gives them a little bit of an edge
00:53:16when it comes to that.
00:53:18A pistol route.
00:53:19I never heard that phrase before.
00:53:21Is that you talking like it's just a corner?
00:53:24Essentially what Randy Moss used to run with Tom Brady
00:53:26is essentially they run my end up at the safety
00:53:30and then you put your hand up
00:53:32whatever direction you decide to break
00:53:34to the right pylon, left pylon
00:53:35and the quarterback knows where to throw it
00:53:37based off of that.
00:53:38So, I mean, I don't know if Alex Van Pelt
00:53:40has that in his office.
00:53:42But yeah, if you're running big personnel
00:53:44and you got a guy, whoever it may be,
00:53:47whether Polk can do it,
00:53:49whether, you know, I don't know if Pop Doug was doing it.
00:53:52He's probably a little bit small to be doing that
00:53:54like down the field like that.
00:53:56I'm sure he can run it though.
00:53:57Yeah.
00:53:58Just look for the hand up.
00:53:59I love how we can get so into the weeds
00:54:01and all the success rates
00:54:02and the different techniques
00:54:03and the pinnacles and this and that.
00:54:04And we can also just go back to this backyard approach.
00:54:07Find the dude, far downfield, wide open.
00:54:10Got his hand up.
00:54:10Throw it at me.
00:54:14Let's see what the hand goes up.
00:54:15You got to let it go.
00:54:17All right.
00:54:18It's time for 3-2-1 breakdown.
00:54:19We do this every week.
00:54:20Three matchups we're looking for.
00:54:22Two keys, one wild card thought.
00:54:24And if you want to do a game pick, you can.
00:54:25We'll get you out of here.
00:54:26So, what's one matchup?
00:54:28Of all the things we just highlighted,
00:54:29you're looking at this as the battleground
00:54:31that could really kind of swing this game for you.
00:54:33For me, it's the Pagers offense line
00:54:35versus the Jets defense line and pass protection.
00:54:38Like I said, they gave up a ton of pressure so far this year.
00:54:40Jets don't give up,
00:54:42no, don't pressure the quarterback very well.
00:54:44So, I think this could be an opportunity
00:54:46for us to take that passing game to the next level.
00:54:48I know it's a short week.
00:54:50So, I don't know.
00:54:50You know, you're not getting really too many live reps
00:54:52when it comes to the passing game.
00:54:54I feel like it could be.
00:54:55I know they have Sauce Gardner
00:54:56and a couple other guys back there.
00:54:58But those guys have given up some plays
00:54:59even last week against Tennessee.
00:55:01So, let's give those guys some opportunities
00:55:04that the offensive line decides to protect this week
00:55:06versus a team who's struggling
00:55:07to get pressure on the quarterback.
00:55:09I like it.
00:55:10I think that's absolutely the battleground
00:55:12that if the Patriots win, you'll look and say,
00:55:14okay, they won there.
00:55:15And that allowed them to get a little bit more
00:55:17of an edge than you expected.
00:55:19I'm going to go defense here.
00:55:20Christian Gonzalez against Garrett Wilson.
00:55:22This is another keep it simple, stupid.
00:55:24You know, like he did a good job last year against Wilson
00:55:26and Wilson's changed and grown.
00:55:27Same with Gonzalez,
00:55:28but like that's the only real receiver that scares you.
00:55:31Put Gonzalez on him or double him.
00:55:32But I think what the Patriots have shown so far,
00:55:35they trust Gonzalez to be their number one
00:55:37against whatever number one.
00:55:38And so I would expect that to continue.
00:55:40Number two is going to be Raekwon McMillan
00:55:43tackling, playing 60 plus percent
00:55:45or 60 plus snaps on defense against Breeze Hall.
00:55:48That's a dude no one really wants to tackle.
00:55:50And if you miss, as you said, he can go to the house.
00:55:53So I'm not saying McMillan is going to miss the tackles.
00:55:55It's just different when third, fourth quarter,
00:55:58you've got all this wear and tear on you
00:55:59and you got to go bang heads again in the A gap.
00:56:02And we'll see how he looks.
00:56:04He's a veteran.
00:56:04I'm sure he'll be fine, but you just need to see it,
00:56:07especially in short rest because missed tackles.
00:56:09Again, that's where teams win and lose in September.
00:56:12And the Patriots have been winning there,
00:56:14but you've got a new linebacker
00:56:15in the middle of your defense.
00:56:16All right, two keys to victory.
00:56:17What's your key?
00:56:19Oh, key number one, I would say offensively
00:56:23is not letting any of the other.
00:56:24I mean, defensively, not letting any other receivers
00:56:27on the Jets beat you.
00:56:28That's that's the big thing for me.
00:56:29You can't let Lazar.
00:56:30You can't let Mike Williams have a big day.
00:56:33I think Gary Wilson will be handled fairly well.
00:56:36I'm sure he's going to make some catches,
00:56:37but you can't let Mike Williams go out there,
00:56:39have a big day.
00:56:40You can't let Alan Lazar get behind the defense
00:56:42because then I think Aaron Rodgers
00:56:44could have a field day, you know, if that happens.
00:56:46And the other thing, other thing defensively,
00:56:48just don't give up the big runs.
00:56:49Like I said, Reese Hall is a home run hitter.
00:56:52Now you get the tendency to put the ball on the ground
00:56:54to try and get the ball off him.
00:56:55But guys have to tackle him if he gets in the open field.
00:56:58He ripped one off down the right sideline
00:57:00against the Titans last week.
00:57:02He's able to run through those arm tackles
00:57:04and he has the speed to take it to distance.
00:57:06So don't let him off the hook.
00:57:08So I have two prepared.
00:57:10Just I didn't know where you were going to go.
00:57:11We don't discuss these before the pot.
00:57:13And one I had was, you know,
00:57:15whether it's Wilson or Lazar or Mike Williams or whomever.
00:57:18And this is not my key, but I'm going to share it anyway.
00:57:20Be physical with them
00:57:21because you need to buy that pass rush time.
00:57:24And if you disrupt the timing of their passing game,
00:57:27that'll give the rush an extra second,
00:57:29an extra beat to get to Rodgers,
00:57:30who's certainly not as mobile as he once was
00:57:32pre-Achilles tear.
00:57:33So that to me is going to be huge.
00:57:34Even if you're going to give up catches,
00:57:36make sure you win at the line of scrimmage
00:57:38or in the first two yards to disrupt that timing.
00:57:40My real key now for the second one,
00:57:43three matchups, two keys is going to be
00:57:45expose the Jets tackling.
00:57:47Like this is an offense that survived
00:57:49on Raimondre Stevenson being Superman in week one.
00:57:52They got very close because Jacoby Brissette
00:57:54was escaping a lot of sacks and pressures in week two.
00:57:57That's a lot for players to create on their own.
00:57:59Everyone needs to do that now in week three,
00:58:02the two of them,
00:58:03Pop Douglas that we talked about,
00:58:04maybe Jalen Polk, whatever it is,
00:58:06Antonio Gibson, who's good at this too.
00:58:08Break tackles, get in space.
00:58:10That needs to be something the Patriots win
00:58:12in order to get out of there with a win on Thursday night.
00:58:15All right, a wild card thought.
00:58:17So this could be X's and O's, could be matchup,
00:58:19could be something totally unrelated to the game
00:58:21as long as it's Pat's Jets.
00:58:23What's on your mind, James White?
00:58:25Ooh, Pop Douglas was frustrated this past week.
00:58:28So look, my wild card thought he go,
00:58:31he has close to, I won't say over a hundred yards.
00:58:35That'd be my kind of, kind of a stretch.
00:58:37I think, yeah.
00:58:38Come on, James.
00:58:39Okay, he has over a hundred yards receiving this week.
00:58:42I feel like they feed him, give him, you know,
00:58:44about eight catches over a hundred yards.
00:58:46I think he can win that matchup in the slot on a short week.
00:58:49I'm sure he's chumming at the bit after,
00:58:51well, he had no catches last week.
00:58:53So I'm sure he's hungry.
00:58:54He's ready.
00:58:55I said, I've seen it in practice already.
00:58:57I know this kid's ready for the moment.
00:58:58You got to feed him.
00:58:59Oh, I love it.
00:59:02For me, let's say they win, right?
00:59:05You're two and one.
00:59:06You got this long layover.
00:59:08You're going to play San Francisco next.
00:59:09Christopher Caffrey's not going to play.
00:59:10It sounds like Debo Samuel might not.
00:59:12You have a lot of people in the media going,
00:59:14okay, if you're three and one,
00:59:16you have to be pushing for the playoffs.
00:59:18I would argue you win two and one
00:59:20and you're in that locker room.
00:59:22You say we won as an eight and a half point underdog.
00:59:24This is a six and a half point spread right now.
00:59:26And we were a field goal away from beating the Seahawks
00:59:29at home again as an underdog.
00:59:30It's going to be really, really hard
00:59:32to convince team leadership in that locker room
00:59:35to not make a push for the playoffs at two and one.
00:59:37Because we know organizationally, right?
00:59:38Like Gerard Mayo has embraced this idea.
00:59:40Elliot Wolfe is the same.
00:59:42We just want to get better.
00:59:43We want to compete.
00:59:44It's not about wins and losses.
00:59:45We'll try telling that to David Andrews
00:59:47and Dietrich Wise and Jacoby Brissett.
00:59:50If you start two and one and beat the Bengals
00:59:53who might go to the playoffs
00:59:54or you lose to a good Seahawks team
00:59:56and then topple Aaron Rodgers.
00:59:58Aaron Rodgers and Joe Burrow.
00:59:59And you're saying, oh, we can't make a run at this one.
01:00:01Two is out as well for at least the next four or five games.
01:00:03Another player you're going to miss in week five.
01:00:06It's going to be huge for locker room.
01:00:08And I don't know if they win.
01:00:11I'm not going to pick them to win.
01:00:12But we can imagine what it'll feel like in there
01:00:15just to be that upstart of a team.
01:00:17Even if September, it's not a mirage.
01:00:18There's just not a lot you can count until mid-October
01:00:21to know what a team is.
01:00:22But that's for us on the outside to take the big view.
01:00:25When you're in the weeds and you're in the day-to-day
01:00:27and you've worked for eight months to this point,
01:00:29now you're beating teams
01:00:30that many people didn't think you would.
01:00:32That does a lot for confidence and belief.
01:00:34And obviously should raise the bar, I think, in that locker room.
01:00:38Is that how you would feel, you imagine?
01:00:39No, I think it's realistic,
01:00:42especially on the state of the division currently.
01:00:45Who knows what happens with the Dolphins with two out?
01:00:47Jets are trying to figure it out.
01:00:48The Bills look good so far.
01:00:50But look, man, everything you won
01:00:53or what you thought you couldn't get is right out in front of you.
01:00:56Go out here, beat a division opponent, the Jets,
01:00:58you're two and one.
01:00:59Go play against San Fran,
01:01:00which I think we can compete with those guys as well.
01:01:03Obviously, they've been one of the top teams in the league
01:01:05over the last several years.
01:01:06But they're beatable.
01:01:07The Vikings went out and handled them pretty well.
01:01:08And they run a similar type scheme defensively
01:01:11as what we're going to run.
01:01:12So you just got to man up and bow up.
01:01:14But I said, I think they can win this football game.
01:01:16The Jets, I said, I thought they would be much better
01:01:19at this point than what they currently are.
01:01:20They're a beatable football team.
01:01:22But it's all about just how they come to play.
01:01:24They play the way they've played the last couple of weeks.
01:01:26I think they'll be right there in it.
01:01:28And like I said, it's can that passing
01:01:30and there will be a challenge in the passing game
01:01:32with this secondary.
01:01:33It's can guys like, can we get guys like Pop Douglas involved
01:01:36and not give up any big plays to those guys?
01:01:38Because they have some big playmakers on offense.
01:01:41So they haven't created them, you know, really just yet.
01:01:44But I said, they're good enough to make them.
01:01:46If you, if you slip up, I will say that.
01:01:48Yeah. All right.
01:01:50Prediction time. I'll go first.
01:01:52I already, I already tease this.
01:01:54I think the Jets win 20 to 19.
01:01:56I think this is another heartbreaker at the end.
01:01:59And it's not because of any character choking
01:02:01or courage that the Patriots lack.
01:02:03It's just the Jets are home.
01:02:05They've got more talent.
01:02:06And I think there's just going to be just a small gap
01:02:08where the Patriots took off.
01:02:10And we could talk about this as like another loss
01:02:12to feel good about.
01:02:14But I think this will be more of an accurate representation
01:02:18of where both teams are.
01:02:20But for a six and a half point favor to lose by one
01:02:22on the road, if this happens as I foresee it,
01:02:2420 to 19, the score I'm going to pick is not that bad.
01:02:27It's just, it's just going to sting nonetheless
01:02:29because it's a Jets.
01:02:29Do you think the Patriots win?
01:02:32I picked against them, you know, week one and they won.
01:02:35So I think I have to, I might have to flip my script.
01:02:37I think they, they go on the road and beat the Jets.
01:02:41I just think the Jets just, they don't quite
01:02:43have it figured out just yet.
01:02:44I think it's a one score game.
01:02:46I got the Patriots 17-14, one of those close,
01:02:50close football games, four quarter game,
01:02:53probably last possession, whether we got to go down
01:02:54and win a field goal or stop them, you know,
01:02:56them trying to drive down to tie it up.
01:02:59I think they have a great opportunity.
01:03:00Short week too.
01:03:01And like I said, we've been able to run the football.
01:03:04Jets haven't been able to stop the run.
01:03:06So I think they're going to get a whole heavy dose
01:03:08of Andre Antonio Gibson.
01:03:10And maybe that, maybe them trying to stop our run.
01:03:12Maybe that, maybe that opens up that pass game.
01:03:15That popped out of the hundred yard game
01:03:17is what I'm talking about.
01:03:17And we know you love that because you watched
01:03:20Northern Illinois basically do that to Notre Dame.
01:03:22Sit on the ball, run, run, run, run, run, run, run.
01:03:24Just kind of hang in and do it.
01:03:25And look, we said it after the opener.
01:03:28This is the Patriots formula moving forward.
01:03:30Control the ball, play good defense.
01:03:32It's old school, but lucky for them,
01:03:34the whole league has gone back in time
01:03:36because you see scoring's down.
01:03:37A lot of too high defenses.
01:03:39These are the games you're digging in.
01:03:41I don't know if it's ever going to get back to college that way
01:03:44for a variety of reasons, but hey, it worked for you.
01:03:46It could work for the Patriots.
01:03:47Any final thoughts before we get you out of here?
01:03:49No, man.
01:03:50Just excited for this team.
01:03:51I thought they're, I think they're off to a great start.
01:03:53Very easily could be two and O, one on one,
01:03:55sitting in a good, this way.
01:03:57I said, and they're a very unfinished product.
01:03:59I said, still, still a lot of unknowns,
01:04:02still guys like, you know, Kendrick Bourne,
01:04:03still on IR and things of that nature.
01:04:06They find a way just to get the receivers
01:04:08involved consistently, man.
01:04:09I think they're going to be competing with every single team
01:04:12they step on the field with.
01:04:13So I said, I'm very optimistic about the season.
01:04:17Yeah.
01:04:18A proud Patriot, a proud Husky.
01:04:19Keep up with him.
01:04:20We're going to check in whenever we see you next.
01:04:22We're always appreciate the time here,
01:04:23but Northern Illinois has another big win.
01:04:25You need to have a drink, a party, go out, do something.
01:04:28Then just go to the work app and say like,
01:04:31oh, keep at it, fellas.
01:04:32Because we got to, they don't come around that often, James.
01:04:35I need, you know, a happy hour or something
01:04:38that we'll get in there for you.
01:04:40We go out there, we win the Mac, man.
01:04:42You know, maybe I'll have me a shot or two or something.
01:04:46All right.
01:04:46We have this recorded now.
01:04:48I'm going to hold it to this.
01:04:49Go Huskies.
01:04:50Thank you, James White.
01:04:51Awesome as always.
