00:00What did you think of Brock Purdy's play last night?
00:02Because I've heard everything from what Dibs said,
00:05which is like everything short of a perfect game.
00:08You were uber, uber impressed.
00:10I actually, and maybe this is a sliding scale
00:13based on just the way I view Brock.
00:16Like I view Brock as elite.
00:18So that changes the grading system.
00:21You know, you can't be impressed when you think,
00:24okay, this is an elite quarterback.
00:26Well, I don't want to say expecting elite,
00:29but like when you're really good, I'm like, yeah.
00:32I don't go, whoa, what a throw.
00:35I'm like, yeah, he does that every week.
00:36But if you go to a really good restaurant
00:38and you have a really good meal,
00:40if it's Michelin star and you go there, it's like,
00:43yeah, and it's like, that meal was awesome.
00:46It's okay to say that meal was awesome.
00:49You ain't got to tell me that, brother.
00:50I know, and you're a big time fine diner.
00:52But I'm gonna eat it.
00:53My point is, is I don't think that yesterday
00:57was like his even creme de la creme performance of the year.
01:02I was actually in the moment, maybe the context matters,
01:07but I was more impressed by the Rams game.
01:09Maybe because we went into it and you're like,
01:11oh, no Debo, no George, no Christian, half a Brandon,
01:15all of that stuff, and there goes Juwan Jennings
01:17for a buck 75 or a buck 80 or whatever it was.
01:21Like I was more impressed in the moment by that.
01:23This one, I'm like, yeah.
01:25I watched Brock go into Seattle
01:26and look like a baller every year.
01:29He's done it three years in a row.
01:30But the way they did it in a spot where they needed it
01:34and they went three of five in the red zone.
01:36No doubt.
01:36Three touchdowns in the red zone?
01:38Are you kidding me?
01:39I know, crazy.
01:40Who are these guys?
01:40Listen, I give them a very good grade,
01:43but it's not an A,
01:44because there were a couple of inaccurate balls
01:47and that's the way we grade.
01:49It's an A minus.
01:50It's not, I mean, it's a very, very good performance.
01:52I get that.
01:53But I've also heard people be like,
01:55eh, it was good.
01:56You know, like the tone.
01:57Not like it was good.
01:58Eh, Brock was good.
02:01I was more impressed today watching it
02:03than I was last night,
02:04and it's because of maybe the notes I took
02:06and I'm looking at the incompletions.
02:09There was the first one, Poonie got beaten
02:12and it was incomplete to Mason.
02:14And then the next one, another empty set,
02:16and we'll get into that in the coaching grade.
02:18I didn't like the empty sets in the deep red zone.
02:21It's not an empty set.
02:23It was empty and I would dare Cosell to tell me otherwise,
02:26because there was no running back back there.
02:28But a lot of the incompletes,
02:31there's one where Seattle blitz seven
02:33and it was a scramble and he threw it away.
02:36That to me is a winning play.
02:37I agree.
02:38When you're facing a seven man blitz
02:40and you scramble and you throw it away,
02:43you don't throw a pick, you don't get sacked,
02:45you don't fumble.
02:46That to me is a win,
02:47because the defense was better than you.
02:49They rushed seven, you had five blockers,
02:53you are in trouble.
02:54So what do you do about it?
02:55You throw it away.
02:56That kind of play I don't think shows up
02:58unless you really do your homework like Greg and I do.
03:01Yeah, I mean, you guys are lockstep, that's clear.
03:04888-957-9570.
03:07How would you grade Brock?
03:09What did you think of his play just specifically last night?
03:12Fred in Richmond.
03:13Hi Fred, thank you for calling Willard and Dibbs.
03:18Hey Dibbs, hey Willard.
03:20I'm waiting on my invite now, Willard,
03:21because we just straight real deal Niner fans.
03:25Hey man, the house is open.
03:27Overall, all right.
03:28Overall though, Brock was a B plus.
03:31You know, that's just more motivation
03:33for this next week against KC.
03:36A minus is a B plus from when I was in high school.
03:40It just all depends on the A or the B,
03:43but minus or the plus.
03:45So it's all the same to me,
03:46but it's just more motivation for him next week
03:49against Kansas City.
03:51Overall, it was a good game.
03:53I did have that PTSD for a hot second.
03:56You know, I guess this season is just gonna be
03:58a little bit of up and down for the Niners
04:01until they get 100% healthy.
04:03At the end of the day, it was still a great victory.
04:06Three and three on top of the division.
04:11And once Green Bay beat Arizona on Sunday,
04:14we'll own first place completely.
04:18And then I don't think we have anything else
04:20to worry about.
04:21Thanks for having me on, y'all.
04:22Right on, Fred, thank you.
04:23Thank you, appreciate it.
04:24Yeah, like again, I don't know that the season's
04:28gonna be up and down.
04:29I know where they are right now,
04:31and I can have two emotions at the same time,
04:34which is, with all the adversity that you've faced
04:37and all the injuries that have happened,
04:39to sit here after week six and be three and three
04:44and have been able to do that on a Thursday night
04:47on the road against a divisional opponent,
04:50those are all good things.
04:52Like, you're hanging in there.
04:54And I firmly believe it's gonna be okay,
04:56and there is gonna be a healthier day this season,
04:58I hope, I think.
04:59So that's all good.
05:01But at the same time, I can look at it and be like,
05:03good Lord, you should be five and one.
05:04Like, I mean, that's.
05:05Yeah, I don't even look at it that way.
05:08Look, it's ancient history.
05:10It's ancient history.
05:12But it's just kind of, it's tough to feel great
05:17about three and three, even though you're in first place,
05:21knowing the way two of those three losses happened.
05:23Of course.
05:24But at the same time, maybe if the view is from 10,000 feet,
05:29you're like, look, with everything they've been through
05:31and losing their identity and trying to figure this out
05:35and a new coordinator and rookies being thrown in
05:37on Thursday night, it's like, geez,
05:39I mean, it could be worse.
05:41Right.
05:41Two of the top 100 players, as voted on by NFL.com,
05:45are yet to play one snap for you.
05:47That's Christian McCaffrey and Drake Greenlaw.
05:49So neither of them has played.
05:51And then another one of the top 100, Trent Williams,
05:55has needed IVs in multiple games
05:57because he came in out of shape.
05:59So you start to look at what you've been dealing with.
06:01And I'm looking at last night's game as a great example.
06:04You had Isaac Garendo as your leading ball carrier
06:09in carries and in yards.
06:11And you had somebody by the name of Patrick Taylor Jr.
06:14Get five carries and a catch as well
06:16because you had gotten down to that point.
06:19Brandon Iyuk was not much of a factor in the game plan.
06:22I'm okay with that because I'm kind of like Stiney
06:25where you don't need to have your $30 million guy.
06:29He doesn't need to have 110 catches for us to be okay.
06:33They definitely spread it around,
06:35but I look at the run game
06:36and you lost one of your offensive linemen, Banks.
06:39He got hurt in the second half and you lost,
06:42you're running back.
06:44You had to go to RB4 and RB5 and all the rest of it.
06:47Through all of it, you're three and three.
06:49There's definitely a bright side to all of this, I think.
06:52How many times so far in this Niner season
06:55have you either gotten a text
06:57or a comment from someone sitting next to you
06:59when a Niner running back gets the ball
07:01and someone goes, who's that?
07:03Yeah, a lot.
07:04It happened twice last night.
07:05Who are you?
07:06Okay, and I got a text from my buddy in a different league
07:09who I'm playing in fantasy,
07:11who goes, who is Isaac Gorendo?
07:15Who is that?
07:17And I'm like, well, we're about one questionable tag
07:20away from him being the number one waiver wire target
07:23of the entire NFL next week.
07:25Exactly.
07:26Like, that's who he is.
07:28Well, and think about what we've gone through
07:30in the Shanahan era.
07:31Raheem Mostert was not a household name.
07:34Matt Breida, Jeff Wilson Jr.
07:36Keep going.
07:37Isaac Gorendo.
07:38You can play this game all the way through
07:40the history of running backs with Kyle
07:42and by the way, Mike Shanahan.
07:45It's kind of the Shanahan way.
07:46And even this year where JP Mason,
07:50okay, Jordan Mason's gonna play
07:52because Christian McCaffrey week one at the last minute,
07:55we were live on the air from the Hilton in Santa Clara.
07:57And it's like, wait, McCaffrey's not gonna play?
08:00Geez, we know Jordan Mason, but what could Jordan Mason do?
08:04I mean, maybe he can get 50 yards on 12 carries
08:07if we're lucky.
08:09Just don't fumble, kid.
08:09Do whatever you can do to avoid a disaster.
08:12And now he's the NFL's leading rusher.
08:14So this whole Niner thing has been built on
08:18who is that running back?
08:19No doubt.
08:20888-957-9570.
08:22We're asking, what did you think
08:24of Brock's performance last night?
08:26Because we've heard a lot of different answers.
08:28Let's go to Alamone Richmond next up.
08:30Hi, Alamone.
08:30Thanks for the call.
08:32Hey, how's it going, guys?
08:34What's up?
08:35Good, good.
08:36I give Brock a B last night.
08:38I made a before mention that the game
08:41when they played the Cardinals,
08:42he ran around like he was Fran Targenton.
08:44But yesterday, it seemed like he had the game more manageable.
08:46He was more in control of what he was doing.
08:49He was very vigilant of what he was doing.
08:51And you can tell that veteran motif in him
08:54came out last night.
08:56So I don't know if it was one of those games
08:58where he had to be laser-focused, a lot of pressure on him.
09:02Whatever the case may be, the man delivered last night.
09:04So big kudos to him.
09:07Alamone, I think that's fair.
09:09Let me add one other thing to the conversation.
09:13And this is not all on him,
09:14but we do look at the quarterback
09:16more than everyone else, obviously.
09:18So if we go into the game and you're worried
09:21about their red zone offense,
09:24and their red zone offense is better,
09:26but wasn't great, what was the tail of the tape on red zone?
09:30Was it three or six?
09:30Three or five, I believe, yeah.
09:32Okay, three or five, that's good.
09:34That's a good, that's a better percentage, obviously.
09:37They've been-
09:38Not as good as they were last year.
09:39What was last year, 70?
09:40Almost, yep, they led the league.
09:42Okay, and they were 60,
09:43but they've been doing 40 so far this year.
09:46We're not doing 40.
09:47When you drive all the way down on your opening drive,
09:49Mustafa gets the interception
09:51and you have to start inside your own five-yard line.
09:53At the three.
09:54Right, but Debo gets the tipped catch
09:56to convert on third down.
09:58And then Mason gets, I think, a 38-yard run at one point.
10:02So you flip the field and now you're moving downhill.
10:05And I can tell you what all of us were thinking.
10:08Debo for five, Juwan for 13,
10:10Mason gets three on first and goal to go at the 10.
10:13All right, and so now you're at the seven-yard line,
10:15second and goal.
10:17And I know those two plays don't work.
10:19And Matthew Wright has to come in and kick a field goal
10:22and we're all going.
10:26Here we go again.
10:27Here we go again with the freakin' field goals
10:29from inside the 10-yard line.
10:32And I'm not even gonna tell you that on those two plays,
10:35Brock did anything wrong.
10:37But if we're gonna hand out A's, A pluses,
10:42whatever for Brock's performance,
10:44that has to be a part of the conversation.
10:47Like that's, those are the plays that need to work.
10:51And that's not just on him,
10:53but there's still a little bit too much of that
10:57meat on the bone, if you will,
10:59of the red zone struggles
11:00for the 49ers offense so far this year.
11:02Well, the opening possession, that's on Kyle.
11:04And having watched the tape again today,
11:07it was them going to an empty set
11:10on second and goal from the seven,
11:11which takes away any possible threat of the run.
11:14And that's where I criticize Kyle
11:17because you had Jordan Mason,
11:19who had already had a pretty good drive.
11:22He had a 39-yard run or 38 on a toss
11:25where Trent Williams absolutely demolished
11:28his Seahawk opposition on the play.
11:31And so you get second and goal at the seven and we go empty.
11:34We're not even gonna threaten a possible run.
11:37That's where I think Kyle's trying to get too cute
11:40and too smart for his own good.
11:41And on second down, Poonie got beaten
11:43for maybe the only time in the game.
11:45And so Brock's got a scramble.
11:47And on third down, they went empty again
11:50with Juszczyk as the only running back.
11:52You didn't even have Jordan Mason
11:54and he threw for Debo and he didn't convert it.
11:56So that for me is less about Brock
11:58and more about Shanahan and a head-scratching approach
12:02for me in the lower deep red zone.
12:05Yeah, that's fair.
12:06I mean, the other side to it is,
12:09as we always kind of talk about,
12:10is the micro versus the macro.
12:13And the micro was going into this game,
12:16this drive, this throw.
12:18The macro, and maybe my favorite part of Brock Purdy,
12:22and this is where I hope everyone's ready,
12:25because numbers are numbers and numbers are numbers.
12:28When you say them, they are.
12:29Unless they're my numbers.
12:31And then they're numbers, okay?
12:33Brock Purdy, this is what you want to see.
12:37For the third consecutive year,
12:39when you pan back and just look at the whole thing,
12:43the numbers kind of always sort of kind of look the same.
12:47And I think that's what you want.
12:48You want consistency.
12:50You want to know that this is not fluky.
12:53You want to know that this is going to happen year over year.
12:55And right now, it's not a stunning touchdown
12:59to interception ratio.
13:00It's nine to four.
13:02It's nine to four.
13:03But again, the rating is over 100.
13:05Again, the touchdown to interception ratio
13:07is better than two to one.
13:09And again, he is sitting near the top, currently second,
13:13and I know that he's got an extra game.
13:15But he's currently second behind Geno Smith
13:17with overall yards, and he'll stay.
13:20Even after this weekend, he'll be in the top five
13:23in terms of total yards passing.
13:26And then there's all of those other metrics
13:29such as average per attempt,
13:32where he was number one last year,
13:34and he is, check's notes, number one again this year.
13:38So that's where you, you know,
13:41when I get stuck is when someone goes,
13:43oh, only 222 yards and one touchdown and two picks?
13:48It's like, well, that was yesterday.
13:50Just pan out at the end of the season,
13:53and Brock's doing the exact same thing again.
13:57And so if you wanna grade it from that perspective,
14:00he's an A.
14:01He's an A quarterback.
14:03Right, and he was an A last night, I thought,
14:05because if you wanna go through all of the incompletions,
14:08the majority of them were protection breakdowns
14:12or they were passes that he just threw away
14:15because he was running out of time.
14:17Now, the red zone, I do think,
14:18still is something that they have to get better at,
14:21and I'm looking at their next trip
14:23where it was first and 10 at the 13,
14:26and he threw it to Debo, and it was incomplete,
14:29and then he threw it to Juice on that little screen,
14:32which it was nice to actually see him
14:33run some screens, by the way.
14:35And they ran the screen to Juice, and he lost three yards,
14:37and so it was then fourth and 14,
14:41and that was gonna be it for that red zone drive.
14:44But I do think that Brock Purdy, for the most part,
14:46on his 10 incompletes, the majority of them
14:49were either he was heavily pressured
14:53or they were throws that just were not good enough
14:57to complete the pass into coverage.
14:59Here's some thoughts from Purdy after the game last night
15:02on how he was able to sort of avoid mistakes.
15:06Well, I think just going into the game,
15:08if they run this, this is my answer, and simple as that.
15:11I just try to keep it simple,
15:12and obviously check the ball down when I needed to
15:14and hit my number one or number two in my progression.
15:17I just tried to play as efficiently as I could,
15:17and I just kept it simple.
15:19Last year in that game, I feel like I just got out of rhythm
15:21and I was trying to force stuff,
15:22and I just wasn't playing in the right mindset
15:24of being aggressive, being smart,
15:26and taking what the defense gave me.
15:27So I learned my lesson in that game,
15:28and then coming into this game,
15:29obviously new personnel, it's the Seahawks, not the Ravens.
15:32And so for me, it was a similar scheme, yes,
15:35but this is what we're trying to attack,
15:36and how can I be efficient as best as I can?
15:38So that was my mindset.
15:39So there again, he's comparing it,
15:40when we compared it to last year's game,
15:42he's not talking about the one in Seattle,
15:43which was on Thanksgiving night
15:44and the Niners were fantastic.
15:46Right, I didn't hear him say that.
15:47No, he's comparing it to the Ravens game last year
15:50because the head coach for the Seahawks,
15:53the defensive coordinator last year for the Ravens,
15:55obviously much made about it.
15:57You, for example, thought that was a bad game for Brock.
15:59You got schooled by Greg Cosell,
16:01who thought it was the great performance of all time.
16:03And Brock confirms what I thought about it,
16:05quite frankly, Greg,
16:06and I hope you're out there listening,
16:08because even though they did go up and down the field,
16:10and that's not the way Brock saw it,
16:12and Brock definitely forced some things
16:13that he didn't need to force.
16:15So last night he let the game come to him,
16:17and I thought that that is why I gave him an A,
16:20because when there were plays that were not there,
16:24he didn't try to make a play.
16:25He either ran it, he had four scrambles,
16:28or he threw the ball away.
16:29Look, bottom line for me,
16:31and this is mainly on Brock
16:33because he's the one who gets the ball
16:34in his hands on every play,
16:36when the Niners do what they did last night
16:39and come out of a game with zero turnovers,
16:42you are going to win that game 98% of the time.
16:46Yeah, you should.
16:47You have more talent, you have all of the stuff.
16:50If you go in and play clean, you're gonna win.
16:55And I think that's an important thing
16:57to sort of stress to Brock,
16:58who's still a young quarterback,
17:00and is now starting to feel himself a little bit
17:03in terms of how he can extend plays
17:06and run around and make plays down the field
17:10and use his legs.
17:11And so that's great.
17:13I love seeing him extend
17:15and learn more things that are in his chamber,
17:19but at the same time,
17:20understand that if you come out of the game
17:23without turning it over,
17:24you are almost assuredly going to win.
17:26Almost assuredly.
17:27I feel.
17:28Or you'll be in the game anyway.
17:29At that minimum.
17:30Like, you know, nine times out of 10,
17:32you've got the better team,
17:34you've got the better players.
17:36So don't make mistakes.
17:38If you don't make mistakes, you'll win.
17:39Yeah.
17:40And that's what they did last night.
17:42Well, and you talk about mistakes last night
17:43and the special teams made a mistake
17:45and they gave up a touchdown,
17:46and that's really the only reason
17:48why Seattle got back in the game.
17:49Sean in Petaluma wants to weigh in.
17:51Hi, Sean.
17:52Thanks for calling.
17:54Hey, what's going on, guys?
17:55How are you?
17:56Good.
17:58Good.
17:59So I just really just wanted to just talk about Brock
18:01and just say, like, really, how good he really is.
18:04I mean, we think about, you know,
18:07all these other, you know, quarterbacks
18:09that, you know, are scrambling
18:10and stuff and make plays like that from homes.
18:11He really, to me, looks like that sometimes.
18:15I mean, he's really, like, scrambling
18:17and getting, you know, the yards he needs to.
18:20And I really just, I trust him at this point.
18:22You know, I don't think there's any, like, you know,
18:24doubt that he is great, you know?
18:27And if he's great now, he can only be greater, right?
18:30So it's been a long time since we've had a quarterback
18:33that we can really trust.
18:34And I just think that the sky's the limit for him.
18:36And, you know, you can see the way he talks
18:39and just his passion for the game.
18:40He really is just an all-around go-getter.
18:43And I just think that he's proven that.
18:45And, you know, as far as grades go and stuff,
18:48it's gonna change week to week, right?
18:51But I'm happy with him as an overall quarterback,
18:53you know, for us.
18:55And, you know, just the dimes he throws,
18:57like the one to Kittle right in the corner of the end zone,
19:00I mean, that had to be placed perfectly.
19:02I don't know many quarterbacks that can do that,
19:04you know, consistently like I've seen him do it.
19:06That's all I got.
19:08Thank you very much for the call.
19:09Yeah, I think this is sort of, to me,
19:11this is the arc of the emotions
19:12in watching Brock Purdy play.
19:14Year one, he comes in, you're expecting nothing,
19:17and it's kind of like, oh, he can play a little bit.
19:20And then year two, he comes in.
19:21And his arm fell off.
19:22Yeah, and his arm fell off.
19:23So then year two, you're wondering about,
19:25can you come back from the injury?
19:27But also like, all right, can you corroborate your story?
19:31Is it real?
19:32Right, and then they go to the Super Bowl.
19:35And then this year, I think the thought is,
19:38all right, we know you're good,
19:41but with the contract as the backdrop,
19:44you're like, can you tighten the screws
19:47and confirm for us that you're truly
19:50one of the best QBs in the league?
19:53And that's what I found or have found very comforting
19:56about these first six games,
19:58even though they're just three and three,
20:00and they haven't been perfect, obviously, and all of that.
20:04But to see him go out there and play games
20:06without a lot of his weapons,
20:08what I think this year has shown is sustainability.
20:13You see quarterbacks or athletes pop and then regress.
20:18This year, to me, makes it feel like he is regression-proof.
20:23Well, I don't think that we've seen the ceiling, so.
20:25Agreed, agreed, but I think we've seen the floor.
