00:00I think Buster needs to kind of un-Farhan this team,
00:05and it's not fair.
00:08I'm not saying these guys can't be on the team next year,
00:11but I mentioned it in the crossover.
00:12I think there are three guys who have what I would call
00:16kind of the Farhan regime residue, and that's not fair.
00:21It's not even bad, but it's just something
00:23that I think for fans, for whatever reason,
00:26they want to shake free of this kind of a player.
00:30It's not a bad player, but it used to be
00:32sort of presented to the fans as like
00:36the thing that Farhan does.
00:38And again, that's not bad.
00:41It just can't be your calling card.
00:43If your calling card is, hey, look,
00:47what I found in the dollar bin,
00:49it's something that's worth three dollars,
00:52and I only had to pay a dollar for it.
00:54And that's your calling card.
00:56That's great if you can find a three dollar player
00:59in the dollar bin, that's wonderful
01:02if you then tuck him next to all of the $100 players
01:06that are in the middle of your order.
01:08But then when you take the three dollar player,
01:10and you literally line up one through four,
01:14or one through five in your batting order
01:16with your Yaz, and with your Lamont Wade,
01:19and with your Tyro Estrada, that's a problem.
01:23And so I'm not saying these guys can't be on the team,
01:25but they cannot be relied on on such a level.
01:28And I know you said it to me earlier, you're right,
01:30they've already started to move the ball
01:31down the road on Estrada in those terms,
01:34but right field and first base, I'm telling you,
01:38I really, and Soto's not happening, so forget that.
01:42And I know I threw out the Bo Bichette
01:45acquisition idea before, that works.
01:48You could also do a Ha Sung Kim in free agency.
01:51You need a shortstop, a major league shortstop,
01:55who can either hit, or at least hit a little bit,
01:59and then also be really reliable over at shortstop.
02:02But then, obviously, you're gonna need some boppers.
02:06And you hope that Bryce Eldridge is everything
02:08that you think he can be.
02:10You have to create a runway for him,
02:11while also making first base relevant.
02:14That's why, to me, Pete Alonzo is in play.
02:17Alonzo is in play, because he can play first base
02:19until Eldridge is ready, and then if Eldridge is ready,
02:21now Alonzo can be your DH.
02:23And then, why not Teoscar Hernandez in right field?
02:27Like, you're not getting Juan Soto.
02:31But how would you feel about the lineup?
02:34Chapman is at third, Bailey's behind the plate.
02:37I like Tyler Fitzgerald over in second.
02:39Jung-Hooley's in center, and Ramos is in left.
02:42If you wanted to do a Teoscar Hernandez flanked by Yaz,
02:47if you wanted to do an Alonzo flanked by Wade,
02:50waiting for Eldridge to come up, all good, all good.
02:56A Bichette or a Hasan Kim at shortstop.
02:59I think you can, that's a lineup the Giants can play with,
03:03and Buster needs to make a big,
03:05very non-Farhan feeling type move by January, by January.
03:14Before the Niners are done playing football,
03:17Buster needs a headline that feels non-Farhan-ish,
03:21which is either a big name, or just,
03:24dude, use some of your minor league players in a trade.
03:29You know, I think Doval and Matos,
03:33and if you want to talk Luciano,
03:36I don't know what the value is anymore.
03:38But those three players.
03:39That, for me, if I'm another team, is a buy low value,
03:43because he's still a young player,
03:44and he's shown an ability to hit at times,
03:47and he's just lost right now.
03:48He's lost in the fog.
03:50Shout out the great racehorse at Golden Gate Fields,
03:53but Luciano does not have a position,
03:55and he's not been given, like you say,
03:57a clear runway to be a major league player.
04:00And I like the names you were throwing out there,
04:02and everything that I'm thinking about with Buster Posey now
04:05as baseball president of ops,
04:07is he's looking for everyday players.
04:10And Hasan Kim, forget this year where he got hurt,
04:13but last year he played 152.
04:15The year before, he played 150.
04:18That, for me, is the kind of player you're looking at.
04:20And he played second, and a little bit of third,
04:22and a lot of short.
04:23That, for me, is the kind of guy
04:25that Buster Posey and the Giants are looking for.
04:27They want to have, of their nine positions,
04:30you want to have, forget the pitcher,
04:32I guess the DH would be one of the nine,
04:34but you want to have six guys who are the guy.
04:38Chapman is the guy, and Bailey is the guy,
04:41and Ramos is the guy.
04:42Jung-Hooley is the guy.
04:43I think that he's the guy.
04:44And Tyler Fitzgerald looks like he could be, should be.
04:48The second baseman.
04:49The guy.
04:49So then, if you want to add in a Casey Schmidt,
04:52who can be utility, and if you want to add in Yaz,
04:55who can be your fourth outfielder,
04:57Lamont Wade can be first baseman-ish.
05:00You get another catcher to back up Bailey.
05:02Now you've got a lineup, and you've got a real order
05:05that feels like it can go one through nine and turn over.
05:08Yeah, I mean, look, I would even add Schmidt
05:12into the group I was talking about.
05:14I don't-
05:15The trade possibilities.
05:16Yeah, again, I don't know what the value is.
05:17I don't know what people outside the organization
05:20are looking at with players down on the farm.
05:23Casey Schmidt, to me, I hate doing this.
05:28He's such a nice dude.
05:28He doesn't look like a Major League player to me.
05:31He doesn't look like a Major League player to me.
05:32He looks like a Major League player to me,
05:34but he doesn't look like a Major League starter.
05:36He's a Major League player, but he's not,
05:38I don't think that he's an everyday starter right now.
05:40I don't see it yet.
05:42I really don't.
05:43He can't hit, and the question about him was,
05:45could he just hit a little bit,
05:46because he was supposed to be a superstar with the glove?
05:48And I would argue, he doesn't look like a superstar
05:51with the glove either.
05:52He's passable, he can play with the glove,
05:56but he does not look like the generational glove
05:59that we were told that he was,
06:01and he swings at flipping everything.
06:03For those of you out there that watched Giants baseball
06:06this year and said, boy, the situational hitting.
06:08Yes, yeah.
06:09He's the worst situational hitter on the team.
06:13Like, he would go up there,
06:14and if he knew it was a big moment,
06:16he would just try to beat the pitcher to the spot,
06:19meaning, I'm gonna try to hit the ball in play
06:21as quickly as possible before he strikes me out.
06:24So he would swing at everything, absolutely everything.
06:28And like, you just,
06:29you can't play Major League baseball that way.
06:33And Casey's now been around for a couple years,
06:36so to me, there needed to be more movement
06:39from last year to this year with Casey Schmidt
06:41than there was.
06:42Well, the beauty of this offseason for Buster Posey
06:45is that you've got Yaz, Estrada, Wade, Tyler Rodgers,
06:50they're all ARB players.
06:52And then you've got Luciano, and Sable,
06:55and Villar, VR, and Meckler, they're all pre-ARB.
06:58So Duvall is an ARB player.
07:02You have all these guys who are still under
07:04some team control, so you can trade them,
07:07and even though their value may not be as high as it was
07:10based on their ability, the team control aspect
07:13makes them coveted, I think, on the open market.
07:16Let's go to Mac T in Union City real quick on this.
07:18Hey, Mac T, thanks for calling.
07:21Hey, what's going on, guys?
07:22Yeah, I'm excited about the Posey thing.
07:24He's a great leader, he's a great baseball mind.
07:27I think we're very lucky to be in this situation.
07:31But historically, athletes have not always
07:34been the best executives or coaches.
07:37I think Derek Jeter flamed out pretty quickly,
07:39and there's a lot of others.
07:41Again, I think he projects really well.
07:44My concern with him is just the time commitment.
07:47Like, is he gonna really wanna grind
07:48in the office or whatever?
07:52Although, on second thought, now I think about it,
07:54if he's like the rest of us and he wants to get away
07:56from his family, it might actually be a pretty good fit.
07:58So, that's my thought.
07:59Mac T, thanks.
08:00Buster does not strike me as somebody who wants
08:02to get away from his family, but I also don't think
08:04you need to worry about him putting in the work
08:06and putting in the grind.
08:08A very smart person who will remain nameless
08:11said to me at the press conference just a couple hours ago,
08:13one of the beautiful things about Buster Posey
08:16taking this job is you can look at what his motivation
08:20must be and immediately eliminate all the things
08:23you don't want it to be.
08:25Buster's not doing this for money.
08:26Nope.
08:27He's not doing this for attention.
08:30He's doing it literally for one reason and one reason only.
08:33There's only one reason that makes sense.
08:35He wants to fix it.
08:36He cares about Giants baseball to his core.
08:42That's it.
08:43That's it.
08:44That can only be the reason.
08:47He cares about Giants baseball even more than you or I do.
08:53That's the only reason.
08:54And that, like, so I-
08:55And that's why he bought a part of the team, right?
08:57Right.
08:59I mean, he bought a piece of the team
09:01and now he sees his team that he co-owns,
09:04he has a piece of it and he thinks, you know what?
09:06I think I can fix what ails him.
09:08I'll do it.
09:09No worries about him putting in the work.
09:10Exactly.
09:11Absolutely none.
