00:00A number of ASEAN member nations, to include the Philippines, are among the fastest-growing
00:04economies in the world, and ASEAN has been a model for the creation of trade blocs like
00:09the APEC and RCEP.
00:11This success is owed in large part to each nation's policies and the shared values
00:16and goals that have led to a rock-solid commitment to cooperation among all members.
00:22Our Klais Elpardilla has more on the President's trip next week to attend the ASEAN Summit
00:28meets in Vientiane, Laos, to hash over a number of regional and global issues and national
00:34interests.
00:39President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. is scheduled to attend the 44th and 45th ASEAN Summits
00:44and related summits in Vientiane, Laos People's Democratic Republic next week.
00:49According to the Department of Foreign Affairs, the President's participation is in response
00:54to an invitation from Laos Prime Minister Sonechai Siphandong.
00:58The theme of this year's ASEAN Summit is ASEAN Enhancing Connectivity and Resilience.
01:04The summit will serve as a platform for the leaders to exchange views on key regional
01:08and international issues, build consensus on matters of common concern, and provide
01:13policy directions for the ASEAN community for the years to come.
01:18President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. is set to participate in 16 leaders-led engagements
01:23with various global leaders from October 9 to 11.
01:27During the summits, the President will push for the Philippines' interests within ASEAN.
01:33The Philippines will continue to uphold and promote Philippine interests in ASEAN.
01:38He will highlight our advocacies in connectivity and resilience, especially in strengthening
01:42the digital economy, supporting MSMEs, the promotion of renewable energy development,
01:48and addressing the impacts of climate change.
01:51The Chief Executive will also emphasize the country's sovereignty and rights in the
01:55West Philippine Sea in accordance with international law.
01:59This engagement follows recent incidents of Chinese incursions into Philippine maritime
02:04territories in the West Philippine Sea.
02:07The President will continue to defend the Philippine sovereignty and sovereign rights
02:11and jurisdiction in accordance with international law, including the 1982 UNCLOS and the 2016
02:18Arbitral Award.
02:19The Marcos administration remains committed in advancing a code of conduct in the West
02:24Philippine Sea.
02:25The desire to conclude that as soon as possible is always there.
02:29In fact, during the last summit and in the subsequent meetings, there has been this thrust
02:36to possibly conclude it in three years as a part of the initiative of Indonesia and
02:44the other members.
02:45Of course, it's not conclusive either.
02:50We've been working on the COC for the past 20 years.
02:54So let's see.
02:55The meetings are also expected to discuss regional and international issues impacting
03:01the Indo-Pacific region.
03:02Topics will include situation in Myanmar, the Korean Peninsula, Ukraine, and Gaza.
03:09The President will witness the signing of a Treaty of Amity and Cooperation by the Foreign

03:19international law.
03:20He will also participate in the ASEAN Zero Emission Community Leaders' Meeting, which
03:25advocates for a green economy.
03:27Additionally, there will be bilateral meetings involving Canada, New Zealand, Vietnam, and
03:33Japan.
03:34Despite a busy schedule, the President will find time to express his love and support
03:39for the Filipino community at a pre-arranged event in the Laotian capital, Kelay-Zalpardilla,
03:46for the new and better Philippines.
