00:00Are you scared of closing your eyes when you go to sleep? Well, it's possible that you are
00:06suffering from nyctophobia. Nyctophobia is an extreme fear of the dark. It's quite common in
00:13children. We see it all the time. Children want to have some kind of night lamps or action figures
00:21by their bedside because they are scared of monsters or invisible creatures like
00:28hurting them when they sleep. And most children do outgrow them. But it is common even amongst
00:35adults and there is nothing to be ashamed of. So, when we look at this fear of the dark,
00:42it can either be a literal fear of the dark of being in a dark room or it could be kind of like
00:50a metaphorical fear of the dark where darkness is the unknown. You don't know what is out there,
00:57fear of uncertainty, fear of the future. So, regardless of whether it is about a physical
01:07darkness or a metaphorical darkness, it can be treated. So, first thing is, if having a night
01:15lamp is all that you need, then go ahead. So, what if you're an adult and you need to have a night
01:21lamp? It is all right. As long as you're able to sleep and whomever is sharing the bed with
01:28you is comfortable with having a little bit of light, that's totally fine. But this condition
01:36is common among adults who have had some kind of trauma in the past, any history of mental
01:43illness like anxiety, depression. So, in that case, merely having a night lamp might not be
01:50the solution for you. My recommendation is to work with the therapist to understand those root causes
01:58and make peace with those emotional wounds that are keeping you up at night, literally,
02:05so that you are able to move on in life. It's not just about having sleep, it's about
02:11enjoying life as well. And there are many different therapy modalities out there and
02:18hypnotherapy is really effective at doing it. As a hypnotherapist, I've guided a lot of
02:24folks who have struggled with trauma or anxiety to go back to those scenes from where it all
02:32originated and once they figure out and they see for themselves what happened in the past
02:37when they're two years or five years old and then it makes sense to them that fear breaks. It's like
02:44how as a child we were scared of invisible monsters but when we grow up we are not,
02:50at least for the most part of the day. So, it's kind of like that. So, my suggestion to you is
02:56do not be scared, do not be afraid. There are so many options available to you
03:01and this is something which can be easily overcome.
