00:00Insomnia recovery is about finding the balance between courage and kindness.
00:05What do I mean by that?
00:07Well, insomnia is a sleep disorder where you're either unable to fall asleep or stay asleep.
00:13Now, there could be many physical reasons for it as well, like being in pain or some kind of hormonal fluctuations.
00:22But the major reasons for insomnia tend to be psychological in nature.
00:26It could be some kind of pre-existing mental illness or health conditions like depression, anxiety, PTSD,
00:37or sometimes it's just about the fear of sleep itself.
00:41We experience sleep disruption for a day or a couple of days,
00:46and then we start associating a lot of negative meanings associated with it,
00:51and that itself keeps the cycle of insomnia going.
00:55So we need to have the courage to be able to delve deeper within ourselves
01:00and to face those thoughts and emotions which we have buried deeper in our subconscious mind
01:06so that we can finally make peace with it and move on.
01:09While we might have to take meds to deal with the symptoms in the short term,
01:15but they will not resolve what is going on in your subconscious mind.
01:20Whatever past incidents which are leaving you in turmoil,
01:26anything where you felt hurt, where you have some thoughts of regret or anger,
01:32you are the only person who can give closure for that.
01:35And I know it can be very scary to look into your own heart and into your own mind.
01:42It feels like opening a Pandora's box because you don't know what's going to come up,
01:46and it can be very scary to go at it alone.
01:49So that is why I would always recommend to do this kind of an inner journey,
01:53along with the help of a counselor or a therapist who is equipped to help you in this journey,
01:59who knows how to help you manage your emotions when something difficult comes up to keep you safe.
02:07That is the most key important thing.
02:09The only way to break out of the fear is by going through the fear.
02:15Unfortunately, there is no other way.
02:17I'm sure in your own life, there would have been many things which you might have avoided.
02:22But the moment you actually faced it, you might have realized,
02:26Oh, this is not actually as scary as I thought it was.
02:29And you would have emerged as a stronger person.
02:31Just take a minute to pause right now and think of those instances to find that courage.
02:39Now, what is the thing about kindness?
02:42So in this journey of recovery from insomnia,
02:45there are going to be times where we slip back into the old patterns once in a while.
02:50We might have a couple of good nights of sleep and again, something might happen.
02:54Or some new issue which we had not even dealt with earlier,
02:58which we weren't aware of, has popped up to the surface now to be healed.
03:03And the whole cycle repeats, becoming aware of the issue, making peace with it, moving on, and so on and so forth.
03:11So which is where you need to be kind and compassionate towards yourself.
03:15Sometimes we tend to be very harsh and critical about ourselves,
03:20trying to do so many things, trying to force sleep upon us,
03:24doing so many evening routines or blaming ourselves.
03:29Oh, my God, I'm so stupid. I can't even fix my own sleep issues.
03:32Such kind of harsh, critical words towards yourself are the worst.
03:38And they will only keep the cycle of insomnia going, which is where you need to find that compassion.
03:45If there are certain days where you noticed a negative thought,
03:50but you did not take action to reframe it and because of which you had a disturbed sleep,
03:57then you first need to be compassionate enough with yourself to say,
04:01you know what, I goofed up last time, but I'm going to do better today.
04:06You need to be loving and caring towards yourself,
04:10unless and until you are able to accept yourself exactly as who you are right now.
04:16I know we all want to reach that ideal stage of where we are happy,
04:20we are getting perfect sleep every night.
04:22But the only thing which is available to you right now is who you are, the version of you right now.
04:28So you need to fully make peace with it.
04:31And it's not just about understanding logically, but from your heart.
04:35And only then we will be able to break the cycle of insomnia.
04:40So when it comes to insomnia recovery,
04:44you need to have both courage to face your innermost thoughts and feelings,
04:49as well as the kindness and compassion towards yourself to cut yourself some slack
04:55when things are not going as you would like them to be.
04:59And be patient with yourself.
