00:00Will insomnia go away on its own?
00:03Yes, it is possible.
00:05Let's look at first what is insomnia?
00:07What are the different kinds of insomnia and when it will go away on its own?
00:12Insomnia is a sleep disorder where you're either unable to fall asleep or stay asleep
00:17during the entire night.
00:19And there could be many causes for this.
00:21Some certain times it's just, you know, some kind of, you know, physical causes like hormonal
00:27fluctuations or vitamin deficiencies or physical pain that you are in like fracture, something
00:33of that sort.
00:35And then there are also mental causes for like, you know, anxiety, worry, depression,
00:41any of these things.
00:42So when we look at insomnia, broadly it can be classified into two types.
00:47One is short term and the other is chronic.
00:50So short term insomnia is something which is tied to a specific event.
00:55So sometimes, you know, we have an exam coming up or there is a big presentation coming up.
00:59And because of it, you know, we tend to feel anxious naturally, oh, I want to give my best.
01:04I hope, you know, I remember everything which I have prepared for.
01:07And once that event passes, most people would, you know, return back to their normal sleeping
01:13patterns.
01:14And this thing can even be for a positive kind of an event.
01:19For some people, it's, you know, like kids get so excited about Christmas or some kind
01:23of their birthday and they're expecting presents and because of which they're unable to sleep.
01:29And for adults, it could be like, you know, a trip which is coming up, you're excited
01:33about it or perhaps you're getting married and you are thrilled about the whole new journey
01:39of life and because of which you're not able to sleep.
01:41But once that event, you know, moves away, then, you know, you would be able to go back
01:47to your typical sleeping pattern.
01:50The second case where it's chronic insomnia, that is where you need more help.
01:55So chronic insomnia is typically, you know, diagnosed as, you know, you're unable to sleep
02:00for more than three nights in a week for over like three months or so.
02:06That's typically what is called as chronic insomnia.
02:09So in that case, then we need to do a deeper investigation of what is it that is happening.
02:15Is it some other mental health issue because of which you're unable to sleep?
02:19Or is it just a fear about sleep itself which has happened?
02:23For a lot of people, this is a much more common reason.
02:26You know, initially it starts off as some kind of a sleep disruption for a day or a
02:31couple of days due to some kind of an event and then we associate a lot of other negative
02:37meaning to staying up.
02:39Oh my God, what if I don't sleep?
02:40Oh my God, am I getting enough hours of sleep?
02:43And because of which we have associated a lot of negative meanings and emotions with
02:49this event of staying up and that in turn keeps the cycle of insomnia going.
02:55That fear based thought loop is going on and because of which we are unable to sleep.
03:00So in that case, you need to work with a sleep specialist, a therapist or a coach to find
03:05out what is the root cause for it and, you know, treat that.
03:10And in some instances, you know, you might also need to consult a doctor and take some
03:14medications to manage your symptoms.
03:17But you know, I've always found that doing therapy along with medications, if you're
03:22taking them, is quite beneficial because while meds are important to, you know, for the short
03:29term relief, but they would, of course, only be able to work at the physical level and
03:33the symptom level and not at the root cause level.
03:37So I hope this was helpful.
