00:00What's up guys? Today we're going to be doing a unboxing and testing out the Galaxy A14.
00:05So this is a phone that I've had someone requesting for quite a bit. You guys know that we typically
00:10look at older flagship phones, but I saw this at the store for $100 and I was like, why not pick
00:18it up and sort of show you guys why I recommend older flagships. Now I know that these phones are
00:23very popular overseas. So we're just going to test it out. I'm honestly going to see if it can do
00:29anything. If it can do anything without lagging or I just want to see what it's all about. It's
00:34been a very long time since we looked at a budget device here, but this is a very popular phone.
00:39And I think, I think this is one of Samsung's best selling phones that they're A13s and 14s
00:45and 12 line like that line. This is like 200 bucks unlocked around that price range. But like I said,
00:51if you get this locked to a carrier, then it's like, you know, this was like a hundred bucks.
00:57So let's go ahead and see what this is all about. All right, guys, let's go ahead and dive into it.
01:02I've been using this phone all day and surprisingly not as bad as I thought it was. Would I get this
01:07over an older flagship? No, but if you did, you know, get this phone for a hundred bucks as a
01:12backup phone, or even, you know, if you want to use it as a main phone, it's not the most terrible
01:17phone for a hundred bucks. I actually was very surprised at a lot of things with this phone.
01:22So let's go ahead and just dive in here. I think the thing that stood out the most,
01:26I was expecting the screen to be really, really bad. And that actually surprised me. It's not as
01:31bad as I thought it was going to be. So this is Samsung's PLS display and it's basically an LCD
01:37display, but it's actually a 90 Hertz. So it does feel pretty smooth. It's a big phone at 6.6 inches
01:44and it's actually 1080p with 440 PPI. You could definitely tell it's a budget phone here with
01:50these massive bezels here. But the overall screen quality is actually pretty good. Now, the view and
01:56angles aren't the best on this phone. As you can see, it kind of like dims out. But yeah, I was
02:01really surprised. Looking at it head on, it's very bright and vibrant and colorful, which again,
02:07surprised me. And I did not expect this phone to have 90 Hertz on it. So for a hundred bucks,
02:11I think the screen actually is pretty decent. Like I said, it's fairly sharp at 1080p. It's 90 Hertz
02:17and it's a fairly big phone as well too. So you can sort of watch content and play games on here.
02:22No problem. It's not the brightest phone in direct sunlight, but it does do fine in terms of being
02:29outdoors. It's just, if you're in direct sunlight, something like the S23 Ultra, you'll notice
02:35immediately. But again, that's a much more expensive phone here. But overall, the most
02:40surprising thing about this phone is actually the display. It's actually a pretty decent display.
02:44It's got sort of the old school water drop notch here as well too. So no punch hole. But yeah,
02:51I'm actually not too mad at the display. I actually think it's pretty decent. It's fairly,
02:55like I said, smooth as well too. So when I first picked the phone up, you can pretty much
03:00immediately tell that it's a budget phone based off of how it feels and the weight. It feels like
03:07almost like a little dummy phone at the store. Very, very light, what I noticed. But you may
03:13like that for its size. But definitely, you can tell it's a cheaper phone hardware-wise. It's got
03:19this cool rubber texture at the back, if you guys can hear that. But it does kind of pick up
03:25fingerprints, kind of. But overall, the hardware, I think it looks actually pretty good. It doesn't
03:31look like a $100 phone. So that's pretty cool. And it's kind of a thicker phone too, actually.
03:38But very smooth and easy to hold. It's not uncomfortable to hold too. There are some
03:42really cool perks here with the hardware. It does have one of my favorite implementations,
03:48a fingerprint scanner. And it's built into the side. It's very easy to get into this phone.
03:53Extremely comfortable. You can use face unlock as well too. But also what's cool about this phone,
03:58the headphone jack is on board as well too. So you do have a headphone jack on here
04:02that you can take advantage of. And also, you do have micro SD card support on this phone too,
04:08which is pretty cool. So I'm a big fan of that. So headphone jack, SD card support,
04:12I think it's pretty cool. Now, you can get that on some older flagships like the LG V60. So that's
04:17why I say it's always better to go with the older flagship and some of the older Galaxy phones
04:23as well too. But the cool thing about this is that it is running technically Android 13. And
04:29that's sort of the thing about this phone, right? It's running like this watered down
04:33version of Android 13. It's the One UI Core version. And basically, it's basically stripped
04:40back. So all the features are not here, basically. So yeah, you're missing quite a bit. NFC is here,
04:51of course. Yeah, you're just missing a lot of the multitasking features and stuff like that.
04:58So it's One UI, but it's like a stripped back version of it. And also, the One UI runs
05:03surprisingly smooth on here, not laggy at all. There are some animation stutters here and there.
05:10And I think that's the one thing you'll notice. Watch this, swipe over, you kind of get that
05:16animation stutter thing sometimes. But as far as the app drawer, swiping down from here,
05:23it's actually pretty smooth. So I was actually pretty surprised. Now, my thing about these older
05:28phones is that in time, right, a year from now, will this thing be still smooth and not lagging
05:35all over the place? I don't know. I doubt it. So I'm going to keep this phone, actually. And I'm
05:40going to see for myself. But surprisingly, pretty smooth here. All right, so the A14 5G, this one
05:46does have the MediaTek chip in it, and it's the 6833 here. So basically, this is not a powerful
05:54chip by any means, guys. For PUBG, we're at like a balanced ultra. That's the highest, you know,
06:01settings that we can get. And like I said, for, you know, if you look at older flagship, it just
06:07will run circles around, you know, this chip basically. So again, not a super powerful chip.
06:14I was able to play PUBG and Subway Surfers, you know, fine. But like I said, if you're an actual
06:21competitive gamer, or you game for long periods of time, definitely want to get an older flagship.
06:27I would definitely avoid these $100 phones, $200 phones, because it's just, you know,
06:34you're just not going to get the best deal here. But so far, you are able to play like a match of
06:41PUBG on here, fine. But like I said, the frame rate, you're not going to be able to play at 60
06:45frames. But games like Subway Surfer and games that aren't really graphically intensive, right,
06:52those games actually work fine. I didn't have any issues with that. I didn't see Subway Surfer
06:56lagging or anything like that. So those games were played fine. But definitely, this is not like a
07:01super powerful phone. It's not necessarily, you know, going to be a good budget gaming option.
07:08So the phone does have 64 gigs of internal storage and four gigs of RAM. Now, like I said,
07:12what's really cool about this phone is that you do have the SD card support. So I'm actually,
07:19you know, surprised that they even put that in, put that in here because, you know,
07:22Sam Samson's been taking stuff out phone. So I wouldn't be surprised if next year's model,
07:28they take out the headphone jack because they typically want to sell you on wireless earbuds
07:33and all that stuff. So I wouldn't be surprised eventually they sell you and make you get the
07:38128 gig version and take away the SD card support. Would not be a shocker at all.
07:44But yeah, so for gaming, again, you know, it does fine. You can casually kind of game on here.
07:51But if you're somebody who's looking for the best, you know, value for your money,
07:54I would go with like an S20 FE or iPhone 11, even, you know, around this price range around
08:02like 200 bucks. And again, but this, if you get a lot for a hundred bucks, I think this is pretty
08:06decent. Actually phone has one loud speaker here. So no stereo speakers. Let's go ahead and hear
08:12what it sounds like.
08:30Oh yeah. So the speaker, it sounds flat. Like it just lacks any type of bass.
08:35I mean, it is loud enough for you to hear, like for an alarm, but definitely it lacks a lot of
08:41bass. And if you, the thing about single speakers, if you cover the bottom, then, you know, you just
08:48can't really hear that well. Right. But the speaker, like I said, just, it sounds flat to me.
08:54And again, so, you know, not surprising. All right. So let's talk about the cameras on this
09:00camera. The cameras on here were kind of, sort of not terrible, but definitely not good. It's got a
09:0850 megapixel standard, which I was really surprised by that because when you turn the 50 megapixels
09:13on, it does take some somewhat detailed shots. So I can't, I can't really hate on it for that.
09:18When you zoom in, you do get a pretty good amount of detail. You have a two megapixel macro camera
09:24which is, you know, okay. It's not really that impressive. And a two megapixel depth sensor, again,
09:30you know, it did a pretty decent job with the 2x zoom. So I can't really knock it for that.
09:35My biggest issue is that you have 1080p30 on here, so you can't do 1080p60 on the main back camera,
09:42which is kind of a bummer. And the same thing for the selfie cam, 13 megapixel and then 1080p60.
09:50And the same thing for the selfie cam, 13 megapixel and then 1080p30. My biggest issue is the color is
09:57just all off on this phone. It makes everything way too vibrant and just way, the color is just
10:05way out of whack on this phone. And, you know, if you're, it takes pretty decent photos, it's just
10:12the color is kind of out of whack. And I would, you know, just judging it based off of like a
10:16hundred, two hundred dollar phone, it does take decent photos, but I definitely wouldn't say it's
10:22like a great camera. Again, for the price point, I couldn't say it's a bad camera. I think it's
10:27somewhat decent. The image processing, dynamic range, everything is just kind of okay. Low light
10:33photography, again, not crazy. Yeah, if you're outdoors, it takes a decent photo, but like I said,
10:41you would be much, much happier with like an older flagship. It still takes better photos in this
10:47phone. All right. So one of the highlights with this phone is that I think the battery life is
10:53pretty decent. I'm able to get all day battery life on this phone pretty easily. So I wouldn't
10:58worry about this phone dying. It has a pretty big battery at 5,000 milliamps. The only thing about
11:03this phone, of course, is that it does charge slow. And of course it's not going to be any
11:07wireless charging or anything like that, but it does charge kind of slow at 15 watts. So yeah,
11:13but battery life is not bad at all. It's pretty decent. So I was pretty impressed with that.
11:20Overall, the A14 5G is pretty, I thought was pretty surprising. Actually, I thought this,
11:27my biggest issue I thought I was going to run into was the screen was going to be terrible,
11:31but the screen actually was not terrible. It has headphone jack, SD card support. It has this
11:37stripped back version of One UI, so you can't really take advantage of a lot of the features.
11:42So that kind of sucks. The cameras are kind of like, eh, the exposure is kind of off sometimes.
11:50The color is kind of meh. The cameras are decent, right? Hardware, you know, it is what it is. It's
11:57a, you know, it's a cheap phone, so I can't knock it for that. The overall phone actually is not as
12:02laggy as I thought it was going to be, surprisingly. Sometimes you get a little animation stutters here
12:07and there, but it's pretty smooth for the most part, which that was a, I think the biggest
12:13surprise here is that it's not completely lagging all over the place. I think that's kind of the
12:17biggest thing here. But again, in a year from now, is this thing going to be still as fast,
12:24right? So, you know, I doubt it, but not bad at all. I didn't think it was a terrible experience
12:31using this phone. What do you guys think?
