00:39policies in Mar del Plata, where the president will close the 16th colloquium of the IDEA
00:44University Institute.
00:50Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in Havana, Cuba.
00:54We begin with the news.
01:12Israeli attacks against the Gaza Strip on Friday have killed at least 39 Palestinians
01:17amid an increase of ground assaults by the Zionist regime in the northern part of the
01:21enclave.
01:23According to residents of the northern city of Havalia, Israeli tanks attacked the center
01:27of the refugee camp located three kilometers north of that city by using heavy air and
01:33ground fire after pushing through suburbs and residential districts.
01:37They also reported that the Israeli armies destroyed dozens of houses on a daily basis
01:42from the air and the ground by placing bombs in buildings and detonating them remotely.
01:47The Havalia camp is the largest of Gaza's eight historical refugee camps and has come
01:53under repeated Israeli bombardment.
01:55It has also witnessed several ground assaults since Israel launched its war on the region
01:59in October last year.
02:05The Palestinian Islamic Resistance movement Hamas has officially confirmed the death of
02:09its leader Jadja Singwar, who was killed in combat fighting Israeli forces in Gaza.
02:14On Thursday, Israeli authorities announced that the leader had been killed in a battle
02:19that ensued when soldiers were searching an area in southern Gaza.
02:23Drone footage released by the military showed Singwar badly wounded inside a bombed building,
02:29still managing to fight off the Zionist regime attack.
02:32In this context, on Friday, the Hamas senior leader Khaled al-Hajja confirmed the death,
02:38stressing that Singwar battled and confronted weapon in hand, the Israeli army being at
02:43the forefront of the ranks until the last moments of his life.
02:47Hajja also stated that Hamas' conditions for truce negotiations would not change after
02:51the martyrdom of its leader.
02:58The Palestinians held Friday the funeral prayer in absentia for Jadja Singwar and all the
03:04Muslims killed and considered to be martyrs in the Gaza Strip.
03:12Of course, today on Friday, we prayed the funeral prayer in absentia for the master
03:16of the martyrs of Palestine, Abu Ibrahim, who was killed in action and was chosen by
03:21Allah yesterday while combating the enemy in the area of Tal al-Sultan in the Rafah
03:25city.
03:26Of course, we just say we belong to Allah and indeed to Him we return.
03:30In fact, he always used to say, the greatest gift the occupation can give me is to assassinate
03:35me.
03:36Today he died as a martyr.
03:38May Allah have mercy on Abu Ibrahim and grant him the highest paradise.
03:42We will remain, if Allah wills, faithful to the covenant and ask Allah to have mercy
03:47on all the martyrs, heal our wounded, and release our prisoners.
04:01Of course, as for the funeral prayer in absentia, it is a sign of prayer of the Prophet.
04:05May Allah bless him and grant him peace, and it is not compulsory and we have a reward
04:10for it from Allah, the Almighty, and Allah accepts all martyrs.
04:14The prayer is not only for Abu Ibrahim, but the prayer was for all martyrs, not for the
04:19martyrs of Gaza, but for the martyrs of the Muslims in general, and we hope that Allah
04:24accepts it.
04:25Of course, there were many sayings from people that it was this or that.
04:29The war is not due to Abu Ibrahim or any person, but it is a fixed and written term.
04:35Allah wrote for a person how to die.
04:37Of course, we felt sad when he was killed in action, and as a brother al-Jatib said,
04:43he was a mujahideen and a fighter, but Allah chose him and we consider him a martyr with
04:48Allah's permission.
04:52In Yemen, thousands of citizens mobilized in the streets of the capital to demand an
04:56end to the Israeli genocide against the Gaza Strip.
04:59Friday's mobilization rendered a tribute to the leader of Hamas, Jahjah Singwar, martyred
05:05in the middle of the Israeli bombardments against Gaza.
05:08The demonstrators raised their flags in support of the struggles of the Palestinian, Lebanese
05:12and Yemeni resistance against the occupation.
05:15The escalation of violence has reached a critical point, and since October 7th, 2023, more than
05:2042,000 Palestinian civilians have been killed in the Gaza Strip.
05:24In addition, thousands of people are agonizing in hospitals where Israel prevents them from
05:29receiving humanitarian aid.
05:36The Axis of Resistance is a fertile movement with great people and leaders.
05:41A greater leader will emerge and the Palestinian cause will remain a priority until Palestine
05:47is liberated from the clutches of the Zionist entity.
05:51We are on the path of those great martyrs and we are ready for martyrdom.
05:55How can you threaten a nation that loves martyrdom?
05:58The martyr Jahjah Singwar is nothing but a great man who tormented you.
06:02The October 7th operation was a curse on you and will remain a curse that will hunt
06:07you and shame you in front of the world that you are weak, humiliated and defeated.

06:32Welcome back to From the South.
06:39The failure of one of Cuba's main power plants left the entire nation without electricity
06:44on Friday.
06:45The disruption happened at around 11am local time when the Antonio Guitera's power plant
06:50abruptly switched itself off from the national power grid, shutting down the country's
06:55entire electrical system.
06:57Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel informed The Nation on X that the government and the
07:02electrical system authorities are giving absolute priority to solving as soon as possible the
07:06contingency and that they will not rest until the power service is fully restored.
07:12On the other hand, the electricity director of the Ministry of Energy and Mining, Lázaro
07:16Guerra, informed that a gradual process for the re-establishment of the national electric
07:21system has already begun and is moving forward as planned.
07:25The causes of the plant's failure are being investigated.
07:32In this context, Cuba's director of energy from the Ministry of Energy and Mining, Lázaro
07:38Guerra, offered statements as the government is doubling efforts to solve the energy contingency
07:43the country is facing.
07:45The start of the power plant of Santa Cruz is in this moment starting.
07:51We are working in the failure of the Guitera's power plant, we are working in the solution
07:57of this failure and also in the eastern part we have power supply in another power plant
08:05which will allow us to start to carry out the work that is needed in this unit to start
08:13again with these units in our system.
08:17And the floating power plant of Santiago de Cuba, we started a motor with the fuel that
08:23is not normally needed to start, but we could supply fuel to the motor of this unit which
08:30will help us to provide energy to this power plant to start from there a restoring process.
08:38And the same happens in the Moa power plant, we have energy there that will allow us to
08:44start a process of a micro system there and therefore we are going to apply the same in
08:52each of the territories of the country.
08:55We have a problem in El Centro and we are working right now in that and we are working
08:59another system in Camagüey to solve and provide energy to the Navitas power plant.
09:06What we are doing in the whole country is look for ways to reach the power plants to
09:13start the processes of putting them to work in the power supply plant of Mariel and in
09:21the eastern part and fundamentally to reach Felton power plant this way, which is also
09:28available in the eastern region, which is the number one power plant.
09:33Felton power plant was not affected, it's available right now once we reach with the
09:41energy to the Felton power plant.
09:43We can start with the work of this unit, we have a system working in the central region
09:50of the country and the distributed energy we have in a central area and we are close
09:57to provide in Varadero gas, which is another important power plant that are available and
10:04from there we can improve the conditions of our system.
10:09We are working in the restoring process and we will continue to work the whole night and
10:16the early morning in this process so that we can process in the re-establishment of
10:21the service and strengthen the micro-systems so that we can gain strength and integrate
10:32micro-systems to win strength in the interconnected systems and have the interconnected national
10:40system, which is the main objective that we have right now.
10:44I would like to tell you that we have all of the power and strength and specialists
10:51which are qualified as operators of the power plants who are focused.
10:59Venezuela expressed its absolute solidarity and unconditional support to Cuba in the midst
11:04of the energy crisis suffered by the Caribbean nation besieged by the U.S. blockade.

11:30through the application of the illegal blockade.
11:33The communique adds that Venezuela supports Cuba for all the efforts made by its people
11:38to confront the coercive measures imposed by the United States.

14:04Seven people have been killed and six injured after a suicide bomber detonated an unidentified
14:10device at a café outside a police training school in Somalia's capital Mogadishu.
14:15According to the police, both officers and civilians were among the victims, who had
14:20been drinking tea outside General Khadjiyeh Police Academy.
14:25An eyewitness assured there were people who found the suicide bomber suspicious due to
14:29the item he was carrying, questioning his intentions.
14:33After they voiced their worries, he blew himself up.
14:37According to witnesses, rescuers quickly arrived after the explosion.
14:40A paramedic at Medina Hospital said several injured people were receiving treatment.
14:45Al-Shabaab, the armed group linked to Al-Qaeda, claimed responsibility for the attack.
14:55Ivory Coast's government bans all student unions following the death of two students
15:00at the arrest of 70 suspects during a raid at a powerful student association's housing.
15:06The ban came after a government raid on a student housing controlled by a student union
15:11known by its French acronym FESCHI that the government says was connected to the deaths.
15:18The National Security Council said that officers discovered large caches of weapons as well
15:23as several illegal businesses within the student housing complex on the main campus of the
15:28University of Abidjan.
15:30The arrests targeted FESCHI's leadership, including the General Secretary Sierre Cambeau,
15:35who was arrested in connection with the killings.
15:41France's Prime Minister Michel Barnier said on Friday that firefighters and other
16:03rescuers have been involved in about 2,300 operations, some of them life-saving, in what
16:08appears to be the biggest flooding for 40 years in central France.
16:12Barnier visited French authorities' crisis centre in Paris and stated there had not been
16:20such violent rains in many people's memory.
16:23More than 1,000 people were evacuated, however, most of them were able to go back home on
16:28Friday.
16:29French weather agency Météo France declared that as much as 700mm of rain fell in 48 hours
16:35in some local areas in the regions of Ardèche and Lauserne.
16:39In addition, the national railway operator SNCF announced that local train services will
16:45remain disrupted for several days.

17:01In India, New Delhi's air quality plunges into the very poor category, with a hazy
17:06layer of smog blanketing the city.
17:09As northern India's Delhi prepares for Diwali celebrations, rising pollution levels have
17:14raised alarms, with toxic foam visible on the Yamuna river and the air quality index
17:20plunging into the poor and very poor categories.
17:23The capital's annual struggle with hazardous air intensifies every autumn, driven by seasonal
17:29stubble burning in neighbouring agrarian states.
17:32The Central Pollution Control Board has noted that an ache in the poor category can cause
17:39breathing discomfort with prolonged exposure, while levels in the very poor category can
17:45lead to respiratory illnesses.
17:47As Diwali, the festival of lights, approaches on 31 October 2024, these pollution levels
17:54pose a significant health risk for residents.
