00:00Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro denounced a new attack on the country's electricity
00:12system, this time at the Simón Bolívar hydroelectric power station in Guri.
00:20The Palestinian-Israeli attack at the New Zerat refugee camp killed 20 civilians, bringing
00:25the total death toll in Gaza to over 40,600.
00:33And in Niger, after 11 years of occupation, German troops completed their departure from
00:37the African nation.
00:45Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Luis Alberto Matos from the Lesus Studios
00:49in Havana, Cuba.
00:50We begin with the news.
00:51In Venezuela, President Nicolás Maduro denounced a new attack on the country's electricity
00:56system, this time at the Simón Bolívar hydroelectric power station at the Guri Dam.
01:01President Maduro detailed the attack affected the 23 states of the country and the capital.
01:06The Venezuelan president highlighted that his team carried out a successful identification
01:11process of the mechanisms used to attack the Guri Dam.
01:14The Venezuelan president also informed that thanks to the authorities' work, the country
01:20is at peace.
01:30We now go live with our correspondent in Caracas, Gladys Quesada.
01:34Welcome Gladys.
01:35What are the latest updates from Venezuela?
01:37Hi Luis, thanks for this time and the opportunity to contact with you and with our audience
01:48through Telesur English and the screens.
01:50Currently, I'm at Petare, one of the most populous neighborhoods in all the town and
01:56also in Caracas, Venezuela.
01:58And this is one of the main zones in the western part of the city that was affected by the
02:03electric cut, the power grid attack suffered yesterday in early morning hours.
02:10As you know and our audience, yesterday the government had a full task force for repairing
02:18and also recovering the electric power grid here in Venezuela.
02:24But also I want to tell you that today, August 31st, the recovery of the coverage is 100%.
02:33I mean all the power grid is up, it's working, it's effective and everyone here in Caracas
02:39is enjoying the service once again.
02:42And the water bombing and the water pumping also is back because this is one of the main
02:46services that get affected when the electricity is out and the power is out here in Caracas
02:52and in all Venezuela.
02:54Currently, I'm at a farmer's market, which means that people is just here buying their
03:00goods for the week.
03:01They are buying, you know, the vegetables, the fruits, they are buying also whatever
03:07they need to be in storage in their houses in order to be prepared, to be ready for the
03:14week.
03:15But I want to tell you and I want to stress, the city is totally recovered in terms of
03:20transportation because as we were reporting yesterday, one of the main affectations here
03:25and the impacts of this electric cut is that the lines, the subway lines are out of power
03:31and also they are out of service.
03:34So they are not operative, which means that people had to mobilize using the landlines
03:39or using maybe the roads, which means crowded roads in every instance because out of the
03:47seven million inhabitants in Caracas, the metro line or I mean the subway line is one
03:54service for three million people here in the city, so it is a lot.
03:58But as I was saying yesterday, the government ensured the transportation means using two
04:04hundred and fifty buses, special buses that were summing up or adding up to the current
04:10means of transportation from the private sector.
04:13Right now, as you can see, there are some people in the streets, many people that are
04:18using the subway lines and they are coming here to these farmers markets here in Petare,
04:24which are more economic and they have better prices than other parts of the city, so people
04:29coming here to do their shops, to do their groceries.
04:34And as you can see behind me, there is a long line of people just buying and choosing and
04:39picking up their fruits, their vegetables, as I was saying.
04:42And there is music in the city.
04:44There is other services.
04:46People are just going to the beauty salons.
04:48They are going to buy some repair car parts.
04:52And also those are the ones that are going to the beaches, to the parks and enjoying
04:57the Saturday, because let's recall, aside from the attack yesterday on the national
05:03power grid and the electric system, aside from the sabotages, aside from maybe this
05:09kind of liabilities and difficulties, Venezuela is still moving on.
05:13And people are just working when they have to and enjoying their leisure time and their
05:17weekend and their free time as long as they can, no matter what happened here in the country.
05:23So today, the city is moving on with normalcy.
05:26As you can see behind me, people are just buying what they need.
05:30They're coming in here.
05:31And we are showing just one market, because we have to stay in a place.
05:35We have to be still.
05:37But in other markets, you know, the fish market, the shoe stores, they have also many, many
05:44customers doing lines, many people who are taking advantage of the offers of Saturday.
05:50And they're just living their lives as long as they can and as long as they have the opportunity
05:56to do so, despite, as I was saying, this kind of liabilities and this kind of attacks.
06:01This morning, there was this news that they had the 100 percent coverage of the electric
06:07system once again back in the city.
06:10But I want to tell you that the president yesterday was saying that Venezuela is ready,
06:15is prepared for this kind of attacks.
06:18And in all times, they have contingency plans.
06:21They are ready.
06:22They are already planning in advance to face this kind of issues, this kind of attacks
06:26and liabilities.
06:27And as yesterday he was saying, in the nighttime and today in the morning, other authorities,
06:34they were stressing that there are also other actions by the national police, like the one
06:40that had place in Tashira before the elections on July 28, and they deactivated one criminal
06:46ban that intended to do the same thing that happened yesterday, an attack, a sabotage
06:51against the electric system.
06:52Also, I want to tell you that the first vice president of the country, Delcy Rodriguez,
06:57she mobilized to Bolivar State and mobilized with the minister of electricity here in Venezuela.
07:04Together they assessed the recovery tasks, and together they gave some addresses this
07:10morning.
07:11They were saying that the hydroelectric plant of Guri is reestablished, and they were saying
07:17that the service is 100% again back in the city.
07:22And some commercials, some market owners, they were saying that yesterday was a difficult
07:27day because they don't have or they lacked yesterday the means of doing the digital financial
07:33transactions, but that today they are full in tax, they are working at 100% capacity,
07:41and that yesterday they, the first thing they did was selling the freeze or the frozen
07:47goods because they were fearing, you know, that they came to be robbed in cash transactions.
07:57This is the reality of Venezuela, a resilient country that is facing every impact, every
08:02attack with creativity, with a joyful spirit, and as you can see behind me, they are just
08:08prepared for this kind of attacks that they have been suffering since 2019, when they
08:13were one week, a whole week without electricity because one of these sabotages.
08:19So Luis, this is the information we will be reporting from different points of the city,
08:24so we can show you the situation today on Saturday noon, because this is noontime already
08:30here in Caracas, in Caracas hours, and we will be reporting for you and for our audience.
08:36So Luis, now we are back to you, we are giving you the signal.
08:40Thank you, Gladys.
08:41We are going to stay tuned with you to continue following up on the situation in Caracas,
08:44so we will be in touch in upcoming news briefs.
08:48Yeah, we will, we will, Luis.
08:52Well, let's move on to other news related to the topic.
08:55Early Saturday morning, Diosdado Cabello, the Minister of the Interior, Justice and
08:59Peace of Venezuela, gave a detailed report on the situation in the Bolivarian nation
09:04after suffering what the executive has described as one of the largest attacks on the national
09:09electricity sector.
09:10Accompanied by representatives of the security forces who guaranteed, together with the courage
09:14of the Venezuelan people, that the brutal attack would not affect the peace of the nation,
09:18Cabello gave details about the situation in the capital and at the national level after
09:22an intense, highly technical and coordinated operation disarticulated the operation led
09:27by the national far-right in coordination with its agents abroad.
09:34After today's terrorist attack, which is intended to scare, they think they are going
09:50to scare our people, but our people have a lot of conscience.
09:56The people are in the streets sharing with their families.
09:59The security agencies are deployed and the people feel safe and calm.
10:05They can walk calmly because there is the police, their police, imperfect civic police
10:12military union.
10:15The Bolivarian National Guard is also deployed and it is part of the doctrine.
10:24The Minister of the Interior, Justice and Peace assured that the state security forces
10:28guaranteed peace throughout the country.
10:30Today, they preserved the peace of this country all day long.
10:36All day long our people felt safe and calm and we saw it right now when we stopped somewhere
10:41and the people felt safe.
10:43They enjoyed with their children, with their wives, with their families.
10:48For all the tour we did, we went to the Barral, to the National Assembly, peace and tranquility.
10:56Let's now take a short break, but remember you can join us on TikTok at Terrestrial English,
11:00where you'll find news in different formats, news updates, and much more.
11:04We'll be right back, stay with us.
11:24Welcome back.
11:25Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel expressed his support and solidarity with the people
11:29of Honduras and its President Xiomara Castro in the context of her accusation to the United
11:34States government's interference in the Central American nation's internal affairs.
11:38Through a statement on his social media, the head of state expressed, stop all interference
11:42in the internal affairs of Honduras, all our support and solidarity to President Xiomara
11:47Castro, her government, and the Honduran people in the face of the attacks on the sovereignty
11:51of Honduras and our America.
12:00Meanwhile in Brazil, the Federal Supreme Court issued an order to suspend the use of the
12:04social media X in the country due to legal violations by Elon Musk's company.
12:09The judge ordered the immediate and total suspension of the social media until all the
12:14court orders issued by him are complied with, the fines are paid, and the company appoints
12:19a representative in the national territory.
12:22He also expressed that there is an imminent danger due to the actions of extremist groups
12:26and these militias that use the social media to spread nasty, racist, fascist, hateful,
12:31and anti-democratic speeches, which undoubtedly create an environment of total impunity in
12:36the Brazilian social networks.
12:38In this sense, it is expected that X will gradually cease to function in the coming
12:41hours depending on the regions of the country.
12:49And also in Brazil, two people lost their lives and dozens were injured after the collapse
12:52of a roof of a Catholic church in Recife on Friday.
12:56The action occurred at the Morro da Conceição Sanctuary, where worshippers were distributing
13:01food baskets to the needy.
13:03Authorities reported that 22 people were injured, some of them seriously.
13:07The mayor of Recife, Joao Campos, decreed three days of mourning and announced an investigation
13:12to determine if the collapse is related to the recent installation of solar panels in
13:16the church or if there were structural failures.
13:19Videos on social media showed the collapsed roof and injured people on the ground, some
13:24with bloodstains.
13:46In Palestine, more than 40,600 civilians have been killed by the Israeli Occupation Forces
13:51as part of the continuing attacks on the Gaza Strip.
13:53In the last 24 hours, the Occupation Forces carried out five massacres in the Gaza Strip,
13:58leaving at least 89 Palestinians killed and 205 others wounded.
14:02Health authorities warned that the number of those killed and injured could be even
14:06higher as many of the victims remain trapped under the rubble of the infrastructure affected
14:11by the bombardments due to Israel's impediments to the entry of ambulances and civil defense
14:15teams.
14:16At one of the most recent assaults, at least 20 people have been killed by Israeli attacks
14:20in New Zerat, central Gaza.
14:26We stay in context.
14:27In the Middle East, a brutal Israeli attack on a humanitarian convoy on Friday has left
14:31four people dead.
14:33An Hezbollah convoy, a U.S. organization, departed from the Karen Shalom border crossing
14:37with the authorization of the occupying troops.
14:40Its members were of Palestinian origin and they had all the controls imposed by Tel Aviv.
14:45They were carrying out food, medicine and fuel for the Emirate Hospital.
14:49However, the occupiers claimed that the vehicle was controlled by armed assailants.
14:54Al-Nahra denies the serious accusation and reiterates that they have a strict agreement
14:59with the Move1 company to use only unarmed guards.
15:09Also in this context, Norway has strongly condemned the recent Israeli attack on the
15:13humanitarian convoy in Gaza, joining the other countries that have expressed concern for
15:18the safety of aid workers in the region.
15:21International Development Minister Anne Beth Winterim called the attack totally unacceptable
15:26stressing that aid workers must be protected while providing vital assistance to civilians.
15:30The situation has led to an urgent call to investigate the attack and ensure respect
15:34for international humanitarian law as the humanitarian crisis in Gaza deepens.
15:45At least seven U.S. soldiers were wounded in the western desert of Iraq after a clash
15:49with suspected Daesh militia members.
15:52The events occurred on Thursday, but it was not until Friday that the Central Command,
15:56in an unusual statement, confirmed them.
15:59According to the U.S. military office, the soldiers were participating in a joint operation
16:03with the Iraqi army in the Anbar desert.
16:06In the raid, in addition to the wounded foreigners, 15 terrorists were neutralized, who, according
16:10to the Central Command's report, were heavily armed.
16:12The Iraqi government has not yet made a statement on this incident.
16:42Welcome back.
16:52In Niger, after 11 years of occupation, German troops completed their departure from the
16:56African nation.
16:57This was confirmed by the Hermann Nikolai, ambassador of Germany in this country, who
17:02stated that the last troops left the territory on Friday.
17:05The diplomat assured that the process was carried out in an orderly and conciliatory
17:09manner with the government council and within the established deadlines.
17:12Yemen ratified the conditions of the peaceful and respectful withdrawal and reiterated the
17:17security of the country's and internal matter, referring to the damage caused by the colonialist
17:21logic of other governments.
17:26Meanwhile, the United Nations announced on Friday the creation of a new office against
17:32racism dedicated to addressing this cause in the workplace.
17:37The head of the organization, António Guterres, called on governments to take the initiative
17:41to promote and implement policies and laws to guarantee inclusion on the occasion of
17:46the International Day for People of African Descent, which is commemorated every August
17:5031st.
17:51Guterres considered it essential to accelerate global efforts to end racial discrimination
17:56against people of African descent, calling the legacies of slavery intolerable.
18:01In this sense, he also advocated for restorative processes to address the crimes accumulated
18:06in decades of slavery, with a call to build a world of equality, opportunities and justice
18:11for all.
18:12In other news, South Korean President Jun Suk-gyo has called for an investigation into deep-fake
18:20pornography following reports of chat rooms on telegrams sharing explicit images of minors,
18:26which has sparked public outrage.
18:28Despite having the fastest internet speeds in the world, the country faces a serious
18:31epidemic of digital sex crimes, such as spy cameras and revenge porn, due to insufficient
18:37legislation.
18:38Recently, college students were found to be operating an illegal chat room on telegram
18:42where they shared deep-fake pornographic material of female classmates.
18:46Jun stressed that many of those affected are minors and called on authorities to address
18:50these digital crimes effectively.
18:53Activists have expressed concern about the difficulty of removing such online content
18:56and urged the government to declare a national emergency in the face of this crisis.
19:05When I saw the deep-fake sexual crimes at the level of a national disaster, I felt so
19:09sad and angry thinking about the feelings of the victims, whose names and faces I don't
19:14even know.
19:15I was so angry at the society that created this situation that I couldn't stand it.
19:20I think that the culture that finds pleasure in sexually humiliating women and the distorted
19:25sexual awareness is really problematic.
19:27And I also think that it is a big problem that the investigative and government agencies
19:31are not properly punishing or investigating even when it is repeatedly happening.
19:47In Poland, a drone show commemorates the 80th anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising.
19:51The activity had a total of 615 drones, formed a series of pictures of symbols of Warsaw
19:56and the Polish resistance.
19:58Among these representations are a bridge with the inscription COMMUNITY, a heart with the
20:02number 44 precisely for the year the uprising took place, a Polish flag with the symbol
20:07of the Polish resistance, a picture of a shell soldier during the Warsaw Uprising with the
20:11inscription RECOGNITION, a mermaid with a shield and a sword, the symbol of Warsaw,
20:16among others.
20:23This game, this drone dance was superb.
20:27It was colorful.
20:28Someone who doesn't know what happened 80 years ago would be able to discover it in
20:32the sky.
20:38It was a very good idea to show that it can be done differently, a beautiful show without
20:45fireworks and with a message.
20:47I thought it was great that there were symbols of Warsaw, resistance and patriotism.
20:55An In Panama ship that can carry 17,640 containers broke the record on Friday as the vessel with
21:01the largest capacity to cross the Panama Canal in its 110 years of operation.
21:07According to the Canal Authority, in a press release, the container ship MSC Marie transited
21:12through the canal, paying a total of $1,361,742.
21:20The Liberian flag merchant ship Vessel became the first with the largest cargo capacity
21:24able to cross the inter-oceanic waterway, surpassing the mark of the Evermax, which
21:29held the title with a capacity of 17,312 containers in 2023.
21:34A canal recurring from a drought that forced a reduction in transits to the end of 2023
21:40projects a record revenue of $5.6 billion in 2025 when some 13,900 ships with 520 million
21:49tons of cargo are expected to pass through.
21:52We have come to the end of this newsbrief.
