00:00The United Nations General Assembly voted on the proposed resolution presented by Cuba
00:16against the blockade imposed by the United States, with an overwhelming majority of votes
00:21in favour.
00:25In Palestine, Israeli forces killed 150 civilians in the last 24 hours in the northern Gaza
00:30Strip.
00:34And in eastern Spain, flash floods disrupted rail lines, highways and swept away all vehicles,
00:40bringing about 70 deaths so far in Valencia.
00:49Hello and welcome to From the South.
00:51I'm Alejandra García from Telesur Studios in Javín, Caracas, Venezuela.
00:55We begin with the news, stay with us.
01:14In the United Nations, member states voted this Wednesday on the draft resolution against
01:19the US blockade on Cuba, as well as the request to exclude the Caribbean nation from the list
01:24of countries that allegedly sponsor terrorism.
01:28Once again, the World Forum of 193 countries reviewed and voted on the document presented
01:34by the Caribbean nation.
01:36187 countries voted in favour, at the same time Moldova absent, while Israel and the
01:42United States voted against the resolution.
01:45The US blockade on Cuba has been widely condemned by the world's majority.
01:50In recent years, successive US administrations have made it worse, despite the overwhelming
01:55rejection of the international community.
02:02At the United Nations General Assembly session, Foreign Minister of Cuba Bruno Rodríguez
02:07gave an account of the damages caused by the US blockade against Cuba, highlighting that
02:11Cuba's birth mortality has increased, while life expectancy has declined.
02:18The human right to health should be sacred.
02:25Cuba is capable of producing around 60% of its basic, either adjusted or essential, drugs
02:35list.
02:36In recent years, it has been impossible for Cuba to guarantee this production due to the
02:42extreme ratcheting up of the measures imposed against our government.
02:45These measures have taken a toll on people's lives.
02:49Infant mortality has increased, and Cuban life expectancy has decreased.
02:55The Parliament representative of Belize in the United Nations stressed the need to stop
02:59the US coercive policies on Cuba, particularly its inclusion in the state's sponsoring
03:04terrorism list.
03:23In this regard, the representative of Angola, during his intervention, pointed out the trading
03:28system integration limitations that the Caribbean nation faces due to the blockade.
03:34The restrictive and discriminatory measures and unfair barriers prevents the implementation
03:41of macroeconomic programs and the country's full integration into the international trading
03:46system.
03:47Therefore, this embargo has severe implications on Cuba's ability to achieve sustainable
03:53development goals by 2030, risking the country to be left behind.
04:11United States presidential candidate Donald Trump visited Allentown, Pennsylvania, this
04:16October 29th, after escalation in controversies over Puerto Rico remarks made days before.
04:23Former President Donald Trump returned to a majority Hispanic city in eastern Pennsylvania
04:28after a comedian at Trump's Madison Square Garden rally sparked controversy by making
04:33racist jokes about Latinos, including calling Puerto Rico a floating rubbish island.
04:39Trump's most recent rally took place in Allentown, a city where the Hispanic population
04:45makes up 55 percent of the total.
04:47The visit was an opportunity for the former president to appeal to Hispanics after different
04:52groups called racist jokes made at the New York rally disrespectful.
05:01In this context, dozens of floating American people protested in the streets of Allentown,
05:06Pennsylvania, in rejection of the racist comment made by Tony Hinchliffe, a comedian hired
05:12by Donald Trump calling Puerto Rico a floating island of garbage.
05:16Pennsylvania is one of the key states to determine the triumph of one of the two opponents in
05:20the U.S. elections due to the strong presence of Hispanic residents, 450,000 of whom are
05:27from Puerto Rico.
05:28In the face of the controversy, dozens of Puerto Rican artists spoke out on social networks
05:33repudiating the comments made by Hinchliffe and expressing their support for the election
05:39of Kamala Harris as president of the United States.
05:46In the United States, Democratic Party candidate Kamala Harris delivered her closing statement
05:51before the presidential election, urging the country to move beyond violent division to
05:56a future of shared responsibility.
05:58From the vicinity of Washington Park, the candidate said that for too long the American
06:03people has been consumed with too much division, chaos and mutual distrust, adding that they
06:09must go beyond that for a peaceful future.
06:13Harris also emphasized that if she wins the election, unlike former President Donald Trump,
06:19she plans to give people who disagree with her a place at the table.
06:23In addition, Kamala Harris stated that Trump has spent a decade trying to keep Americans
06:28divided and fearful, which is why he should not be president of the country again.
06:39In Georgia, the Central Electoral Commission has formally requested an investigation due
06:44to allegations of electoral fraud following the parliamentary elections held last October
06:4926th.
06:50This request arises amidst escalating political tensions, particularly involving President
06:55Salome Suraj-Bishli and various political parties that have raised concerns regarding
07:01potential irregularities in the electoral process.
07:05However, the commission maintains that the allegations are unfounded.
07:10In a statement, it was expressed the frustration over the intense criticisms and accusations
07:15since the election results were announced.
07:17The commission further asserted that the claims seem aimed at undermining its credibility.
07:27On Wednesday, Botswana went to the polling stations for one of the most hotly contested
07:32general elections in its history.
07:34In the elections, the current president of the country, Mark Guetze Macisi, will seek
07:39re-election for a second five-year term representing the ruling party that seeks to extend its
07:44nearly six decades in power.
07:46The citizens will elect 61 members of the National Assembly, who subsequently will choose
07:51the country's president and 609 local councillors.
07:56More than one million registered voters are summoned out of a total population of 2.5
08:01million and affected by inequality and unemployment.

09:03Strip.
09:04Local authorities said that the city of Beit Lahya has been devastated due to the continuous
09:09Israeli bombardments and blockades.
09:11They also warned that the city lacks food supplies, water and health and communications

09:48warned that the Tel Aviv regime is threatening the peace and security of Middle Eastern nations

10:26and blockades committed by Israel against thousands of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
10:32The apartheid regime continues to use starvation as a weapon.
10:37For over two weeks, all humanitarian aid to Gaza has been halted.
10:41The blockade has suspended efforts to deliver essential vaccination and other life-saving
10:48services indefinitely.
10:51These actions are more than a denial of aid.
10:54They are a direct attack on the dignity and rights of Palestinians, an attempt to undermine
11:01their fundamental right to life.
11:04Gaza must remain whole and its people must not be forced into displacement or subjected
11:10to this calculated oppression.

11:50to return to China by mid-November.
11:56The Russian defence ministry reported that army units liberated the strategic territories
12:01in the Kharkov region.
12:03The defence ministry pointed out that the armed forces took control of Kuglia-Kovka

12:12Authorities detailed that Kaif lost at least 410 soldiers to combat vehicles, an armoured
12:19vehicle and a multiple rocket launcher system, among other military equipment.
12:24The defence ministry added that Russian aircraft, artillery and strike drones targeted the infrastructure
12:30of Ukrainian military airfields and an oil depot supplying fuel to Ukrainian armed forces
12:35units in the Zaporozhye and South Donetsk regions.
12:43The Ukrainian armed forces reported the military desertion of more than 100,000 soldiers in
12:49the midst of the conflict with Russia.
12:51The National Security and Defence Council established a goal for new recruits to cover
12:55the decreasing numbers resulting from mass desertion and battlefield losses.
13:01Although they detailed that there's no exact number of soldiers who left the ranks without
13:05authorisation, the agency highlighted the increase in complaints due to the forced recruitment
13:11of young and adult men.
13:29In eastern Spain, flash floods disrupted rail lines, highways and swept away all vehicles
13:34bringing about 70 deaths so far in Valencia.
13:37Over 1,000 soldiers from Spain's emergency response units rescued many people that were
13:43trapped by the floods.
13:44In this context, the Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez chaired on Wednesday a crisis

15:51Welcome back to From the South.
15:53The Argentine government announced this October 29th that fuel prices will rise by at least
15:594% from November 1st.
16:01It was also reported that the value is defined taking into account the rate of crawling peg
16:06applied by the central bank and the tax component to match the movement of the official dollar,
16:12which rises monthly by 2%.
16:14Moreover, it is estimated that petrol and diesel prices will be adjusted by an average
16:20of 4%, although there may be some items with slightly higher increases.
16:25This increase is related to the movement of the exchange rate and the rise in the international
16:29price of oil.
16:35Following in Argentina and amid a national transportation strike, different social movements
16:40and unions launched their plan of struggle in protest against President Javier Millet's policies.
16:45On Wednesday, planes, trains, ships and trucks were out of service in the country due to
16:50the struggles of the different social unions as a result of the worsening of the economic crisis.
16:56The transport strike is added to other measures of force that are being carried out by the
17:00different social sectors that are victims of the economic model of Millet.
17:04The protest on Wednesday and on Thursday will give continuity to the mobilizations of the
17:09state workers, where they denounced the closing of the negotiations by the national government
17:14after barely increasing the minimum salary of this sector by 1%.
17:25In Brazil, the trial of those involved in the murder of Consulwoman Mariel Franco and
17:30her driver began after almost seven years without justice.
17:34The Rio de Janeiro Public Prosecutor's Office will ask the jury to impose the maximum sentence
17:39of 84 years in prison against the suspected perpetrators of the crime, Reni Leza and
17:46Elcio Queiroz.
17:47The Mariel Franco Institute described the trial as a decisive moment in the search for
17:52justice for those who, like Mariel, fought against the abuse of power in Brazil's poorest
17:58neighborhoods.
17:59The murder of this political activist, which took place on March 14th, 2018, in the city
18:04of Rio de Janeiro, unleashed a wave of protest across the country and shocked the international
18:10community who, for years, have been demanding justice.
18:19In Peru, in the context of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit and in the face
18:24of a 72-hour strike, President Dina Baluarte asked Congress to authorize the entry of foreign
18:30military troops.
18:31The administration said that this would help to preserve security through the summit.
18:36The Baluarte government emphasized that planes, helicopters, weapons, refueling trucks, as
18:42well as various support equipment for planes and helicopters would be brought in.
18:46In addition, the project allows for the arrival in the country of 600 military personnel from
18:51the United States Army, Air Force, and Marines who will be deployed to Lima, Pisco, and Chiclayo.
19:02And in other news from Peru, the transport union joins a 24-hour strike for the closure
19:07of the Xalapalca prison.
19:09The transport union mobilizes to condemn the central government's intention to expand
19:13the Xalapalca prison.
19:16Also the carriers urge the radio taxi companies not to charge them for the use of the radio
19:21frequency since they want all taxi drivers to be able to participate as they are one
19:26of the sectors most prone to be assaulted.
19:29On the other hand, they demanded police presence and more security cameras to avoid cases of
19:34assaults and robberies against cab drivers.
19:41In Puerto Rico, given the failure of the privatization of the electricity service, the Union of Electrical
19:47and Irrigation Industry Workers proposed on October 29th the restructuring of the public
19:52corporation.
19:53The organization's president, Gualberto Rolon, said that in view of the failure of the United
19:58States companies, Luma Energy and Genera PR, the time has come to reorganize the Puerto
20:05Rico Electric Power Authority, moving towards a system that abandons the use of fossil fuels
20:11while ensuring an accessible service for all.
20:14The union has pointed out that the privatization of electricity system has led to an extremely
20:20costly operation, which has resulted in a much higher bill and a deficient and failed
20:26service quality of modernization of the system.
