00:00With Jacobs in the eye, he'll get it. Jacobs, suck it in. Touchdown number two of the day.
00:10Now, back to Stiney and Guru on 95.7 The Game.
00:16Kyle Shanahan received a multi-year contract extension right before the start of last year.
00:24Oh, so Shanahan and Lynch under contract through 2027.
00:36That's this year, and then next year, and then next year, and then next year.
00:45So he's got almost three and a half years left, both of them.
00:47Just some info for people.
00:51And they're probably most likely going to finish it out, right?
00:54I wouldn't say that.
00:55And we don't even know what this season is going to culminate in.
00:59But with all the bad, Stiney, I got to just point this guy back out, man.
01:04George Kittle, that catch in the end zone. Dude's in the zone right now, and I just...
01:08One guy can't win a game.
01:10I didn't say it. I'm just giving him his flowers.
01:13He's getting older, and it seems like he's getting better, man.
01:16Catching the rock. You can count on him, man.
01:19Let's go to Bob.
01:22Bob's in the city.
01:24What's going on, Bob? How you doing, man?
01:27Hey, how's it going? It's going pretty good, guys.
01:29I love the show, as always.
01:31Yeah, you asked about solutions.
01:32Yeah.
01:33So as far as I'm concerned...
01:34Yeah, I got three quick things.
01:36But first, the solution is, obviously, I would have these dudes hitting every day this week
01:41when they get back.
01:43Tackling, tackling, tackling.
01:46Because it seems like they didn't want to get hit.
01:48They didn't want to hit nobody.
01:50So, I mean, just like the other caller said, it's the eye test, right?
01:54And he made a valid point, I thought, for Dobbs and our running back.
02:00So I was like, wow.
02:01You know, I don't know what the...
02:03Why would they put the other guy, Allen, in?
02:05I mean, he looked okay, but with a broken finger?
02:08And plus, Dobbs' legs could probably hurt the other team.
02:12Because he can scramble.
02:12He can run.
02:14I mean, I remember he had a really good game against us when he was with Arizona.
02:18So I don't know.
02:18Oh, and then to get to Guru's point, Steve Kerr did the same thing with Draymond Green
02:26when he punched...
02:27What's his name?
02:28You know, it's like he made excuses for him.
02:31He didn't come out right away and say anything.
02:33So I think head coaches cover their star players, if you know what I mean, right?
02:38Yeah.
02:39Thanks, guys.
02:39No, thank you, Bob.
02:40Appreciate the call.
02:41Season-high three turnovers, missed tackles, Stiney.
02:45And I just don't remember a nine-er team missing that many tackles that early on in the ball game.
02:52And Jordan Love, Stiney, was only 13 of 23, 463 yards.
02:56Could have been more.
02:57Dude dropped a wide-open touchdown.
02:59Who was that?
03:00Watson.
03:01Watson.
03:01I mean, man, that ball was right there.
03:03But, man, you telling me you down 10 at half?
03:0614 at half?
03:07No, 10 at half.
03:09Debo gets that run and that is called back.
03:11But that's just like the microcosm of the year.
03:14So you're asking me for solutions.
03:16I don't know, Stiney, because I don't even know who's going to be on the field Sunday
03:20night against Buffalo.
03:21And when do you get to a juncture as an organization?
03:24I'm not saying they're not.
03:25Kyle doesn't strike me as the type of guy, i.e.
03:29Christian McCaffrey, that he's going to, oh, Bosa, we'll shut you down for next year.
03:33But, I mean, if this thing gets out of hand and the more losses you pick up...
03:38But they just don't seem buttoned up.
03:40Coaching and the play.
03:43Yeah, I mean, to me, the issue is if you think you're in a Super Bowl window, which they
03:49thought they were before the year, otherwise they wouldn't have caved in to Iuke and Trent
03:55Williams and McCaffrey, then you got to ride it to the hilt.
04:00And for everybody that's saying, well, let's get Mason in there for McCaffrey, I can't
04:05imagine that happening until the 49ers are essentially eliminated from the postseason.
04:10And that's the problem.
04:12When you have veterans that you think can get it done, now you just can't sub in the
04:17young players when you're 5 and 6.
04:20You have to let this team fail on its own with the veterans that you paid and the veterans
04:26who have been carrying you for so long.
04:28I don't see...
04:30I mean, hell, they're using six of the guys who they drafted this past year as rookies,
04:36so they're already playing a fair amount.
04:38And by the way, that may be an issue as to why they're not better than 5 and 6 is because
04:44their young guys used to not be able to get onto the field.
04:47Now their young guys are playing.
04:49And while they're all having nice little rookie years, there's a difference between having
04:53a nice rookie year and being a championship-type team.
04:57Well, look at Poonie.
04:58He's had one.
04:59He had three penalties yesterday.
05:03He had one on the season coming into that game.
05:07Nobody's going to sit here and say he's not been better than Trent Williams.
05:10He's been more reliable than Trent this season.
05:12So when you talk about the youth aspect of it, Stony, I mean, they are making contributions,
05:16but it sounds like you've been saying you got problems with the guys that got paid that
05:20have not even come close to hitting their target in regard to production.
05:24Well, what I'm saying is if Dominic Poonie's having, okay, let's say he's having a good
05:30rookie year.
05:31I said it.
05:32Okay, he's having a good rookie year.
05:34For a rookie, he's having a good year.
05:37But he's lined up on the offensive line, and they, as a group, have not been good.
05:44Now, I'm not saying it's Poonie, but he's part of it.
05:47So is Trent Williams, and so are all the other guys.
05:49But you can go down the line and see who's playing.
05:51The numbers will tell you who's playing better and who's not.
05:55A guy that came into what?
05:56But do you understand, like, if you're a rookie having a good year, you're having a good year
06:00for a rookie.
06:01It doesn't mean you're an all-pro.
06:03Well, we don't know if he's not going to be an all-pro.
06:06We can't rob him of that.
06:07And some rookies will be an all-pro on a team that's five and six and can't block anybody.
06:11It's not a team award.
06:12It's about people can hone in on you doing your individual job.
06:17Okay, so Poonie's been among the best linemen in all of football?
06:20I'm not saying that at all.
06:21I'm not saying don't lump him in with Trent Williams.
06:23It's like Brandon Pajemski.
06:25He had a really, really good year for a rookie last year.
06:29It doesn't mean he was an all-pro or an all-star.
06:32And I don't want to pick on Poonie, but I'm sure he's going to be a lot better in three
06:36or four years than he is now.
06:37No doubt about it.
06:38Who's to say he's not on his way to...
06:41Yeah.
06:42Let's go to Leroy.
06:43Leroy's in Oakland.
06:45Oh, Leroy.
06:45What's up, Leroy?
06:46How you doing?
06:48What's up, Steini?
06:49What's up, Goo?
06:49How y'all feeling?
06:50Better than your team, man.
06:53Oh, man.
06:54You know, when we spoke last week, I knew it was going to be brutal.
06:59And y'all remember last week, I was like, I don't have any hope.
07:03But here's the thing.
07:06And this is a bad thing.
07:08The division, our division is allowing me as a 49er fan to have hope.
07:18And that's a shame, man.
07:19And that's a shame because I really do think that, and you guys know I think that dysfunction
07:26has set in with this team a long time ago.
07:30And I think the players were, you know, character enough guys to not want to throw Kyle Shanahan
07:38under the bus and say anything bad about him.
07:40But I think, you know, he lost the team along with all those losses he's had in big games.
07:50You know what I mean?
07:51Going back to the Atlanta days when he was offensive coordinator and lost the Super Bowl
07:56to New England.
07:57I think the players are like, we're trying to do it your way.
08:00We're trying.
08:00We're trying.
08:01We're trying.
08:02And we're coming up short.
08:04And you see the players losing focus, man.
08:07That's a sign of internal dysfunction amongst the players when you have all those penalties.
08:13And a lot of these guys are deboned and these are veterans on the offensive line that are
08:20having all these penalties.
08:22And it's a lack of focus.
08:24Like they're tuning Kyle out.
08:26Because I know they practice hard, but the lack of focus.
08:31I mean, it's so unprofessional.
08:33All these penalties.
08:35And to me, it's just a sign of dysfunction.
08:38They're tuning Kyle Shanahan out silently.
08:42And I don't think Kyle Shanahan knows it.
08:44Because, you know, again, we got character guys as players where they don't want to talk
08:51bad about him to the media or throw him under the bus.
08:53But I think it's set me in where, because the lack of focus and then losing all those
08:59leads that they lose in the fourth quarter is a sure sign of dysfunction.
09:05And I hate it.
09:07But we're still in this thing.
09:09In last place.
09:11But one game out of first.
09:13This is incredible, man.
09:15Yeah.
09:16With six left, Leroy.
09:19I mean, what do you want as a fan?
09:21You want a chance, right?
09:22You want a chance?
09:24I'd take it.
09:26You ain't got to apologize for getting in.
09:28I'm just.
09:30But again, like the question I have is what give me give me one or two things that you've
09:35seen through either 11 games or the last 17 games that that leads you to believe that
09:42a flip, a switch will be flipped.
09:46Nothing.
09:46But who told me Friday, Sandy hopes not a strategy.
09:50But if you're telling me I get another last chance at that finally manifest and who wouldn't
09:55take it?
09:56Of course you take it.
09:57But I don't know that you can count on it right now.
09:59Do you think they tuned him out?
10:01Why would they tune him out?
10:03I think unless they don't believe this season has been agenda city from the start, just
10:11like the Warriors all won and got their way.
10:14They didn't win and they got their way.
10:17Well, they were paid to negotiate champions before they won a championship.
10:23They were paid like they won the Super Bowl, but they didn't win the Super Bowl.
10:28How can you like think about this?
10:30You don't win the Super Bowl.
10:32You get what you get rewarded.
10:34Well, I'm sorry.
10:36It's going to make the next trip to the Super Bowl harder.
10:39But when you look at Brandon, I, you can and where his career was going and the year he
10:44had last year up into the Super Bowl, right?
10:47And he got paid.
10:48No, I was a shell like I'm not.
10:50OK, he got hired.
10:52You wouldn't have money for seven weeks.
10:56I'm with.
10:57OK, now the guy is gone and the offense steals the offense.
11:02Stunk with him.
11:03OK, but is there a bigger thing going on on why there's an odor?
11:08Because he can't be blamed.
11:10Yes, he can be blamed.
11:12Brandon, are you?
11:13Absolutely can be blamed.
11:14Tiny stop.
11:15Oh, so now my cat and I, you does not.
11:18OK, let's talk McCaffrey now.
11:19He can't be all dried up.
11:21Is he done?
11:22I don't know.
11:23Maybe is there something going on with the offense as a whole to where everybody's looking
11:29dysfunctional.
11:30If you want to say that Brandon, I you was not a part of this lost season.
11:35I'm not saying that.
11:37I see how you ran from the McCaffrey question.
11:39I'm terrible.
11:41What do you want me to say?
11:43I've said it a million times.
11:44I don't know why it doesn't register.
11:47Their big boys have not played well.
11:51If you want to blame that on Shanahan, you can.
11:55I'm just saying, since when does Trent Williams need to be motivated or since when does Trent
12:00Williams need to be coached a certain way?
12:02That's fair.
12:03When does Christian McCaffrey need to be motivated, need to be coached a certain way?
12:09I'm just saying I look at their big.
12:12It's like you can't win if you're supposed best players are all having bad years.
12:19And then the guy that becomes one of your best players can't get on the field.
12:24That makes no sense.
12:25All right.
12:26But I'm not telling you.
12:27Well, then you know what?
12:28You understand that he's not NBA.
12:30If you got a center, you can't plan to center a car.
12:33You can figure out a way, especially when you're supposed to be one of the brilliant
12:37minds in this game.
12:38And you know how you floored me?
12:40You just brought up Detroit.
12:42They're running back you.
12:44That coach is figuring out Ben Johnson, a way to use all the talent in the world.
12:48Why is Kyle?
12:50Why is it all just come down to either or and now the secrets out like your offense needs
12:58a jump and you got to jump?
13:01What happened to the sideline?
13:02What happened to all the weaponry?
13:04Well, this was a team with more weapons than any team in football.
13:06I'm starting to question the cook.
13:08Well, I mean, I'm starting to question the cook.
13:10You know, it's it's.
13:12Yeah.
13:13OK, George, kid, all I want is people told me he was average.
13:16You know what?
13:16He's been the best thing going.
13:18You keep everybody keep just throwing out.
13:20Oh, best roster in football.
13:22And nobody questions it like nobody questions.
13:25There was no reason.
13:26That's why I've been last nine weeks.
13:29People are going to hate me.
13:30The dude is hurt and he's not saying anything.
13:33OK, well, then just say he's the least of my problems.
13:36Then say, let's just chalk this season up to injury.
13:40That's not how it works.
13:42Well, I know it's not how it works, but if you truly believe that,
13:45then you believe that next year you bring back everybody and they should be fine.
13:50But I don't think people believe that.
13:52Let's go to J-Dog in Boston.
13:54Oh, boy.
13:55What's up, J-Dog?
13:58Oh, what's up, guys?
13:59Long time.
14:00Thanks for taking my call, man.
14:02I mean, I'm not even starting your day.
14:05I'm not even going to try to convince you.
14:07I know you got the bad case of the Shanahan virus.
14:13And it's almost like I could get a Halloween mask and steal your car.
14:18As long as I got a Kyle Shanahan costume and you'd probably look the other way.
14:23So I'm not going to I'm not even going to try that.
14:25But I just want to say, like, we're not playing Mason,
14:29not putting your best players on the field.
14:32The Roderick Campbell is still on the field.
14:34And the head defensive coordinator and special teams coordinator.
14:41And what is it going to take for you and these Kyle Shanahan supporters and the media,
14:50the Bay Area media with the lollipop questions of Kyle Shanahan was in Boston,
14:55he would be barbecued.
14:57Like, what's going on with the accountability out there?
15:00And now it's getting weird with the people like you,
15:03Scotty, that defend Kyle Shanahan.
15:06And it's like, what is it going to take for you to really even consider moving on?
15:11You walk with your best players on the field.
15:14Yes.
15:15What you really have to understand is,
15:16what I don't know if I heard or not what anybody's saying is,
15:20Kyle Shanahan can't coach if he doesn't have an all-star team.
15:24So this is a time when you got aging players,
15:27what you really need to coach.
15:28And when you got a guy like Isaac Correndo and a guy like Mason that is not getting any time at all,
15:36like, how are you supposed to improve it?
15:38Where's the development at?
15:40I thought McCaffrey was the best running back in football.
15:45Well, guys get old.
15:46Guys take a step back.
15:47Okay.
15:47That's part of the game.
15:48That's part of life.
15:49You know what I mean?
15:50I'm not the same shade off I was in game 25.
15:53Then surely he'll tell you that.
15:55You know what I mean?
15:59You got to hold him accountable.
16:00And I just want to call you.
16:01And I'm glad to hear from you guys because it's been a little while.
16:05But I just want to say, man,
16:07some of the responsibility has got to go on the Bay Area media
16:10that's serving Shanahan the softball questions.
16:14And you're lucky you're not in Boston, Massachusetts,
16:16because you would be barbecued.
16:18And Debo Samuel, that's Bushley.
16:20You'd be barbecued as well.
16:22Thanks for taking my call.
16:23I love you guys, man.
16:24I mean, the bottom line is for eight games,
16:26they played without McCaffrey.
16:28And during those two months, everybody said,
16:31well, maybe when McCaffrey gets back, things will turn around.
16:34So McCaffrey comes back and they use him like they've used him
16:37and things haven't turned around.
16:39And maybe now they'll do something different.
16:41I don't know how many games, you know, I mean,
16:47were you going to bring McCaffrey back and only use him half the time?
16:50I guess that could have been a solution.
16:53But again, I'm just what I see,
16:58the difference between this team and a winning team isn't
17:01spreading carries out to Mason and McCaffrey more.
17:06I mean, it might help.
17:08Maybe.
17:08I'm not saying it won't.
17:10But to me...
17:10Well, you scored 10 points yesterday,
17:12and your offense has been impotent before McCaffrey
17:15and since McCaffrey's come back.
17:17Well...
17:17And now you got people questioning, Stiney,
17:19is McCaffrey finished or does he need...
17:22He's nowhere to run.
17:24I don't know how you could say he doesn't look the same.
17:26Maybe a step a little bit slower.
17:28But you think Kyle's running him out there if he thought that he wasn't the same?
17:33And the bottom line is, had they used Mason,
17:36let's say half the time or whatever,
17:38and they go one and two since he's come back,
17:41which they would have,
17:43because I don't believe that any substitution or any amount of Mason carries.
17:49So now they're one and two and Mason's still involved.
17:53Let me tell you what people would be saying.
17:55How come we waited eight weeks for Christian McCaffrey to come back
17:58and now we don't use him like we're using him in the past?
18:02Well, you're getting that now with Mason
18:04and especially on top of the fact that you're losing these games.
18:07So the bottom line is,
18:09you have a player that touches the ball 25 times a game.
18:12Well, he touched it 14 yesterday.
18:14And okay, so what's the problem?
18:15No, I'm wondering why were the other 11?
18:18Well, when you get down 17-0, you can't run 30 times.
18:24And again, let me reiterate that.
18:26Something's broken, I don't believe it's the players.
18:29If they would have kept you, you don't believe it's the players.
18:32No, they take some ownership, but I believe that all of a sudden...
18:36Well, then don't go halfway and...
18:38What's halfway?
18:39Halfway is just absolutely lambasting Kyle,
18:42but then saying, but we shouldn't do anything.
18:45He's fine.
18:46If you really think Kyle Shanahan's the problem,
18:49like J-Dawg in Boston, then get rid of him.
18:51We don't know where this is going.
18:52I'm talking about the end of the year.
18:53I think we know where it's going, don't we?
18:56I think we know where it's going.
18:57You never know with sports, man.
18:59The reality is that if McCaffrey would have come back
19:02and they kept Mason involved
19:05and they won one out of the three games where McCaffrey's back,
19:08we would all be complaining that McCaffrey isn't being used
19:12like he normally is being used.
19:14And why not?
19:16If he's healthy, he's got to play.
19:18I don't know.
19:20Again, I think the problems are bigger than
19:23Mason needs eight to 10 carries a game.
19:25I think that, again, the problems to me are comprehensive.
19:30The line is not very good.
19:32The defensive line is not very good.
19:34Well, in fact...
19:35What's their best position group?
19:39Receiver.
19:42Okay, so it's receiver and you don't have IUC.
19:45And Debo Samuels had a terrible year.
19:48And Ricky Pearsall hasn't caught a ball in three weeks.
19:51But that's your strength.
19:53So I don't know what to tell you.
19:57I can just go by what's going on on the field.
20:01And there are five and six teams.
20:04And if you want to make a change,
20:07the change probably has to be Kyle Shanahan.
20:10It does.
20:11I mean, I'm not saying don't fire him.
20:15I'm just saying if you really think he's the problem,
20:20then you got to move on.
20:22Let's go to Will in the East Bay.
20:24What's going on, Will?
20:24How you doing?
20:26I'm doing well today, Stiney.
20:28How are you and Google?
20:30Hey, doing well.
20:31Hanging in there, man.
20:33Yeah, you guys, you sound good.
20:35Always cool to talk to you.
20:37I'm going to try to make this point as well as I can.
20:42And I'm going to date myself now, okay?
20:44There used to be a time in football and baseball
20:47where you had players who were very well paid,
20:50but they had a hunger.
20:52And the reason they had a hunger,
20:53because they didn't have these huge guaranteed contracts
20:57with a lot of, like I said, the money guaranteed.
21:00These guys were playing with a certain hunger to achieve,
21:03but it was also a hunger to keep their job next year.
21:07And let me just state,
21:09I think all these players are worth
21:11as much as they can get from ownership.
21:13I believe 100% full enterprise.
21:16But when you got a guy hanging around camp
21:19who is trying to get an extension,
21:21but he's not practicing with the team.
21:23And then you got another prominent player
21:25who's holding out.
21:28The rest of the team sees this.
21:31And then the team, the ownership capitulates.
21:33They get their money.
21:34They get their big bag.
21:35They get, and more important,
21:36they get the guaranteed contract.
21:39So as good as they are,
21:41and they've been in the past,
21:42they're very comfortable.
21:44And my problem is the rest of the team sees this.
21:46And this kind of comfort can breed complacency.
21:50And I wouldn't bring this up,
21:52except it seems like all of their weak spots,
21:56all the penalties, the turnovers,
22:00it's just lack of effort.
22:01It's across the board.
22:03And I can't help think
22:06that maybe it's a much bigger problem, okay?
22:09There were players in the past like Brady.
22:11And you got a guy playing over there in Kansas City,
22:14the best quarterback on the planet.
22:16He's not making the most money.
22:17He doesn't have the most.
22:19But this guy, he's playing to win.
22:22He's playing for more Lombardis.
22:24He's playing for his legacy and the team's legacy.
22:28And it seems now that the money is getting centralized
22:32to a few different players find they're happy.
22:35Well, one of those guys is out for the season.
22:37The other one's injured right now.
22:39And it seems like a team whose big stars are not there.
22:44And there's a certain complacency
22:47that exists over the rest of this team.
22:51I know I'll think of something else later
22:52after we're off the line, but I can't help but think that.
22:55I appreciate the call.
22:57And maybe, you know what?
22:58Maybe it's as simple as this.
23:01You know, McCaffrey has been a workhorse for the Niners.
23:05We've known that.
23:06And then he gets hurt.
23:08And he misses eight games.
23:09And so maybe you got to put him back in there
23:11to try to be a workhorse for two or three games.
23:14And now maybe Kyle says, you know what?
23:16McCaffrey's not really McCaffrey anymore.
23:18And now we'll give Mason more of a shot.
23:21But I don't think it's like too late.
23:24I don't think like, McCaffrey's played three games
23:27since he's come back.
23:29You really think that you're going to allow McCaffrey
23:32to play one or two games, try to get back in his groove
23:36and take him off the field that quickly.
23:39Yet you had to try to give him a chance
23:41to be a big part of why this thing would turn around.
23:44And he hasn't been able to help.
