00:00The Venezuelan government reopened the border with Colombia after it was closed on January
00:1810th on the occasion of the inauguration of President Nicolás Maduro.
00:25The governments of China and Granada agreed to strengthen cooperation in culture, education
00:30and tourism, as well as to deepen people-to-people exchanges.
00:37In Japan, authorities issued a tsunami warning after a 6.9 magnitude earthquake shook the
00:42country on Monday.
00:50Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Alejandra García from Telesur Studios in
00:54Caracas, Venezuela.
00:56We begin with the news, stay with us.
01:11The Venezuelan government reopened the border with Colombia after it was closed on January
01:1610th on the occasion of the inauguration of President Nicolás Maduro.
01:20The governor of the state of Tashira, Freddy Bernal, said the border was opened in complete
01:26peace and normality with the assistance of the United Civilian, Military and Police Forces.
01:31Bernal informed that the border was closed on January 10th after receiving information
01:36that an international military intervention against the Venezuelan territory could be
01:41in the making.
01:42In his speech during the border opening, Bernal condemned former Colombian President Álvaro
01:48Uribe's call for the military intervention and reiterated the peaceful atmosphere that
01:53can be breathed by the Venezuelan people who continue to work for its country's prosperity.
02:01It turns out that this mafioso from Colombia, mastermind of massacres and murders, partner
02:06of Pablo Escobar now dares to ask for an intervention against Venezuela.
02:13As Commander Chávez once said, you didn't lack time Uribe, you lacked balls.
02:19With Bolívar, with Chávez and with Nicolás, we are waiting for you, whenever you want,
02:26wherever you want and however you want.
02:29We will make you bite the dust of defeat.
02:33The Venezuelan government paid posthumous tribute Monday to former Attorney General
02:38and ex-Vice President of the country, Isaias Rodríguez, who died Sunday at the age of
02:4282.
02:43Isaias' body lied in state at the National Assembly building in Caracas, where the former
02:50Attorney General was honored by government officials and the Venezuelan people.
02:55The ceremony was presided over by Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, the Executive Vice
02:59President, Delcy Rodríguez, and the President of the National Assembly, Jorge Rodríguez.
03:04In a speech broadcast on national television, Maduro prized Isaias Rodríguez's revolutionary
03:10life, especially as first Executive Vice President of President Hugo Chávez Frías.
03:18He was always ready to teach lessons about everyday facts.
03:25He was a professor of everyday issues, every topic, but he was not a teacher that only
03:35talked, but he also listened, which is the most important thing, because in listening
03:41is the key to be able to teach, because if you don't know to listen and how to learn,
03:49you won't be able to teach, no matter how wise or intelligent you are.
03:56In his speech at Isaias Rodríguez Postum's homage, President Maduro thanked the deceased
04:01former Vice President for his services to the homeland, and sentenced that victory will
04:05always be on the side of the Venezuelan people.
04:09Isaias Rodríguez, fly high, the fight continues and the victory is ours.
04:16Thank you Isaias, we love you, thank you.
04:20In Venezuela, the Ministry of Interior and Justice arrested far-right militant Roalmi
04:25Alberto Cabeza Cedeño, dismantling the latest false positive attempt by the far-right.
04:31The ministry carried out an exhaustive investigation to clarify the facts after María Corina Machado
04:36said that a member of her trusted team was allegedly mortally wounded by the police during
04:41the demonstrations of January 9th.
04:44The alleged victim, Roalmi Alberto Cabeza Cedeño, was detained in a well-known hotel
04:49in Gran Caracas.
04:51Roalmi said he was hidden there under the direct orders of María Corina Machado.
04:57Cabeza is reportedly in excellent physical and health condition, with no wounds in any
05:02parts of his body.
05:04The far-right militant will be presented before the Venezuelan Justice to face the charges
05:09of association to commit a crime and simulation of a punishable act with the objective of
05:15generating anxiety in the country.
05:22In Venezuela, the Interior, Justice and Peace Ministry issued an official communiqué to
05:27debunk the unfounded allegations of far-right opponent María Corina Machado.
05:32The ministry stated,
05:33Various national and international websites spread María Corina Machado's serious allegations
05:39that a citizen of her trusted team had allegedly been fatally injured by the forces of law
05:44and order during the demonstrations on January 9th, 2025.
05:49As a result, the Public Prosecutor's Office and state security agencies, through the Interior,
05:54Justice and Peace Ministry, have conducted a thorough investigation to clarify the facts.
05:59The entity further ensured,
06:01After the corresponding inquiries, we inform Venezuelans that citizen Roalmi Alberto Cabeza
06:06Cedeño, CIV-18-021-776, has been detained in a well-known hotel in Greater Caracas,
06:16Venezuela, who confesses that he was in custody by order of citizen María Corina Machado.
06:23Likewise, the competent authority argued,
06:25It should be noted that citizen Roalmi Alberto Cabeza Cedeño is in excellent physical and
06:31health condition, with no wounds in any part of his body. The aforementioned citizen will
06:37be presented before the justice entities for both criminal association and simulation of
06:42a punishable act, which were aimed at generating anxiety in the country.
06:48The Comunique kept on saying,
06:50The Interior, Justice and Peace Ministry reaffirms its commitment to the warranty of human rights
06:57as it is enshrined in our Constitution of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela,
07:01international treaties and other laws in force.
07:09In Venezuela, Attorney General Tarek William Saab denounced and condemned the calls for
07:13military intervention against Venezuela made by Álvaro Uribe and other five red figures.
07:19Tarek William Saab said that an investigation was opened on this matter and announced an arrest
07:25warrant for Leopoldo López and called for red notices to hold these people accountable for their
07:30crimes. The Attorney General said that Venezuela's public ministry will always act and uphold the
07:36Venezuelan Constitution.
07:39So I am just referring to a mental disorder man who has Álvaro Uribe, who on January 12th
07:49he launched that criminal and that criminal summoned to a military fighting intervention
07:58here in Venezuela. And that serial killer, who is recognized as a serial killer, who just
08:10in a preliminary investigation, it was found out that he killed
08:16lots of innocent people who wanted to call them as guerrilla through the false positive.
08:29And so he made Colombia a cemetery.
08:37Referring to the detained extreme right-wing militant Roalme Alberto Cabezas Cedeño,
08:41the Attorney General said the following.
08:43We opened this investigation and the person appeared safe and sound. And he told that there
08:54wasn't such an arrest. And he confessed that, and he said that the moment in which the Bolivarian
09:06police officers approached him was to protect them. And it was like that.
09:14It was clearly said by this citizen. The famous bloopers appeared there.
09:22We could see that on the video. And the investigation is underway.
09:28In Ecuador, President Daniel Novoa canceled his campaign rally in the province of El Oro on
09:38Monday after armed groups killed a major of that province. Novoa also resumed his position as head
09:44of state ahead of schedule, for which he withdrew an executive decree assigning Cynthia Gelibert as
09:49acting president. Violence continues to worsen in the country as armed groups launch a campaign
09:55to attack state officials in order to generate chaos in the population. It is expected that in
10:00the next hours, President Daniel Novoa will lead a meeting with security forces in the
10:05capital city of El Oro to coordinate efforts to confront organized crime.

10:51Welcome back to From the South. The Palestinian government asked the United Nations Security
11:00Council to put an end to the Israeli genocide in the Gaza Strip. In a communique, the Palestinian
11:06authorities condemned what the failure of the international community to stop Israel's actions.
11:11In this regard, they urged the United Nations Security Council to force the Zionist regime
11:16to stop its genocidal offensive in the Gaza Strip, where more than two million Palestinians
11:21live. They also demanded the implementation of the Security Council resolutions, especially
11:27those stipulating a ceasefire and the entry of humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip.
11:36The Israeli occupation forces continued their massacre against the Palestinian people
11:40in several areas of the Gaza Strip. During the last 24 hours, the Israeli army bombed
11:45the Salah al-Din school, home to thousands of displaced Palestinians in the west of the enclave,
11:51leaving five people dead and several injured. In east Gaza, several injured citizens arrived
11:57at the Baptist hospital after an airstrike on a house. While to the south of the city,
12:03several Israeli ships attacked the area of al-Azba, located on the al-Mawassi coast in Rafah.
12:09We were sleeping at home, and suddenly, we heard the sound of bombing,
12:19and we did not know that the strike hit the same place where we live.
12:27We came here and found about six, seven collapsed houses and more than 11 martyrs,
12:35most of them children. Suddenly a barrel fell. This is a residential area full of simple people,
12:44and there is no resistance or anything here. As you can see, two, three, four,
12:50five houses, more than six houses destroyed, and they are all children and simple people.
12:58In Lebanon, President Joseph Aoun appointed Nawaf Salam as the country's prime minister
13:04with the task of forming a new government cabinet. The appointment of the nation's new

13:14out of 128 voted in favor of Salam, while 34 abstained and nine members of parliament
13:21advocated for the current head of interim government, Najib Mikati. In this context,
13:26Salam's candidacy was also supported by several western and Arab states. Nawaf Salam, 71,
13:33was Lebanon's permanent representative to the United Nations in New York between 2007 and 2017.
13:44Thousands of Belgians went on strike across the nation on Monday, crippling air and rail traffic
13:49and shutting schools in the country's capital. Almost half of all flights at Brussels airport
13:55were reportedly canceled as luggage handlers, security and other ground staff joined the
14:01workout, while national train operator NMBS said it was running only a limited number of trains
14:07throughout the country. On the other hand, schools were shut with tens of thousands of teachers
14:13expected to join a national rally in Brussels. The demonstrators rejected the pension reforms
14:18that are being discussed by parties trying to form a new government following the June 2024
14:24election. The protesters are also demanding better working conditions, company social contributions
14:30in proportion to their needs and an end to unconditional donations.
14:38The governments of China and Granada agreed to strengthen cooperation in cultural education
14:43and tourism as well as to deepen people-to-people exchanges. The information was made known

16:12Welcome back to From the South. In the United States, search teams continue looking for bodies
16:40in the Los Angeles neighborhoods devastated by the still uncontrolled wildfires hitting
16:45the area for a week now. As the disaster entered its seventh day, with more than 90,000 people
16:51still displaced and swathes of America's second biggest city in ruins, the first glimmers of
16:56normal life began to emerge. However, local officials say they are braced for new problems
17:02as the National Weather Service is forecasting winds of up to 110 kilometers per hour to return
17:09on Tuesday. On the other hand, local police and California's national guards have placed
17:14roadblocks around evacuation zones in an effort to prevent looting.
17:20As we've mentioned, the National Weather Service is predicting close to hurricane force
17:25level winds and so we're making urgent preparations. My top priority and the
17:31priority of everyone else is to do everything we can to protect lives. As these winds approach,
17:38L.A. City firefighters and firefighters from across the county, state, and nation,
17:44and even overseas are in a proactive and strategic posture to save lives. We are still, for the
17:51Altadena area, we are in the third day of grid searching. It is a very grim task and we,
17:59unfortunately, every day we're doing this, we're running across the remains of individual
18:06community members. That is not easy work, very sad to report, and I believe that work is not
18:13only going to continue, but I believe we'll continue to find remains. So please be patient
18:19with us. People are saying, I just want to go look at my house and I want to see what's left.
18:23We know that, but we have people literally looking for the remains of your neighbors.
18:29Please be patient with us.
18:33Climate activists targeted Charles Darwin's grave with shock paint on Monday in the
18:38latest controversial disruptive action by protesters against the UK government's
18:43environmental policies. Two supporters of the Just Stop oil group have spray-painted
18:491.5 is dead in shock on the tomb of the 19th century biologist in Westminster Abbey,
18:57central London. It follows last week's announcement by Europe's climate watchdog
19:02that average global temperatures over the past two years have, for the first time,
19:06exceeded the critical 1.5 Celsius warming limit. London's Metropolitan Police said officers had
19:13arrested two women on the suspicion of causing criminal damage with what is believed to be
19:18paint at Westminster Abbey.
19:25In Japan, authorities issued a tsunami warning after a 6.9 magnitude earthquake shook the country
19:31on Monday. According to the nation's meteorological agency, the quake was recorded after 9pm local

19:43meteorological agency warned about the arrival of a tsunami with waves of up to one meter high,
19:49which will affect both Miyazaki and Kochi prefecture. In addition, authorities urged
19:55residents to stay away from the coastline and river mouths after waves up to 20 centimeters
20:02high were recorded in the affected area. In southeastern Brazil, landslides caused by
20:11torrential rains left at least 11 dead and several people missing, particularly in the state
20:16of Minas Gerais. The landslides occurred early on Sunday morning in the cities of Ipatinga and
20:22Santana do Paraíso, which were hit by flooding after a sudden downpour of 80 millimeters of rain
20:29per square meter fell in less than an hour. In addition to the fatalities, the natural disaster
20:34destroyed several houses, leaving at least 150 people homeless. Meanwhile, in the state of Santa
20:41Catarina, heavy rainfall washed away sectors of highways, causing two deaths and leaving one
20:46person missing. In response to the catastrophe, local officials declared a 180-day state of public
20:53disaster. And we have come to the end of this news brief, but you can find this and many other
