00:00What constitutes a successful season for the Giants this year and and and we put
00:05that out to you as well. 888-957-9570. That's the number. What
00:10constitutes a successful season for the Giants this year? Just make the playoffs.
00:14That's all. That's it? Yep. Yep. I mean, make the playoffs. Win the division? No,
00:22that's not realistic. Like, host a playoff series? No, I don't think that's fair.
00:27Just make the playoffs. Be one of the, what, three or four wildcard teams? Three
00:34wildcard teams? I don't know. I don't even know anymore. No, I do. I mean,
00:38baseball has become something where, you know, if you can just be a
00:43little bit above 500, you have a chance. So, just make the playoffs. That's all. See,
00:48my answer is a little bit more abstract. And again, we'll take your phone calls
00:52right now. What constitutes a successful season for the San Francisco Giants?
00:57888-957-9570. Will Clark in 15 minutes. My answer is not so much about the
01:05standings. It's not so much about the playoffs. It's not so much about their
01:09their final record. Do you know what I have just had enough of when it comes to
01:15Giants baseball? Is this damn inferiority complex. Wow. Like, I am physically
01:23rejecting it. It is nauseating to me. What has happened to us? What has
01:30happened to this fan base? And I'm not blaming us. I will blame the Giants
01:35largely. But to me, it is positively nauseating. The way that this market, as
01:43large as it is, this team with the financial resources it has. Wow. The
01:49financial resources it has. They have it, but do they use it? Not is not enough.
01:54Okay. No. Yeah. No. And that's part of what I'm getting at. I get it. Yeah. The
01:57fact that this franchise with its history, its market standing, its fan
02:02base is literally going into seasons where its fans are looking at the
02:08framework of baseball and going, we have no chance. We have no chance. I hate that
02:15that's true in any market. I hate that it like in NFL, Wisconsin and Jacksonville,
02:21Florida could meet in the Super Bowl someday. And it's realistic. Like it's
02:24not a crazy thought, but not in baseball. So I know there have always been
02:29franchises like this that either claim small market or actually are small
02:35market and they feel like they don't have a chance. But we've arrived at a
02:38spot in baseball where almost all of the fan bases feel that way. And so what
02:44ends up happening is the conversations that we have around baseball have
02:48nothing to do with like who should be their first baseman this year or what
02:53happened in that game last night with that pitching change that the manager
02:58made in the seventh inning, the conversations get more into, is there a
03:02Jersey that I would buy my kid? And the conversations get into, are you excited
03:08at all about spending money to go to a game? This is where we end up. It
03:13nauseates me. Yeah, it's not our fault. It's theirs. But it has got that has to
03:19be their focus. It has got to go away. They have got to find a way to where the
03:25Dodgers are in town and people aren't like, I'm not going there to watch that
03:30display and watch all the Dodger fans show up. Yeah, because that's where we
03:34are. And I do think that it takes more time than just one year for you to shed
03:39that inferiority complex. And right now you are inferior. So the complex of the
03:45fan base, I think matches with what you are as a team because, you know, we
03:49talked about it and you mentioned it during the crossover, like the odds to
03:53win the World Series right now and the Giants are at 60 to one or, you know, the
03:59Reds were 70 to one and the Giants are kind of in that same ballpark. And you
04:03look at the Giants roster and the Giants roster is inferior and you have an
04:09owner who wants to break even and you have a new president of baseball ops who
04:14wants to do better but it takes time. And your farm, you have one player in the
04:20top hundred according to MLB in their farm rankings and that's Bryce Eldridge.
04:25And beyond that, you've got nothing. So your farm is weak, your roster is
04:30mediocre. So in terms of inferiority, yes, you are inferior. Right, but I don't I
04:37don't even know if it's necessarily about that. Like those are very fair
04:41baseball reasons. To me, this is this is more ideology. Yeah, this is about
04:46confidence. Yeah, it's it's about even what we were just talking about with the
04:51guys with with the Warriors right now. Like do you allow yourself to be a
04:55dreamer or not? And some people are built that way where it's like they always are.
05:00That's kind of me. Some people are built to where they never are. Some people are
05:04a little bit more like functional with it where it's like, yes, I will here. No,
05:08that's not realistic. I can't stand that there's ever a season where the Giants
05:14before they even start, people are like, now, yeah, I hate it. That that should
05:19never happen. That should never, ever, ever happen. I mean, let me ask you this
05:24and and and and to our listeners as well at 888-957-9570. Have they fixed the
05:30jersey problem? By the way, I hate that I can even just say the jersey problem
05:34and you probably all know what I'm talking about. Maybe. But for those of
05:37you who don't know what I'm talking about is this constant conversation. Do
05:40the Giants have anyone where you'd go buy a jersey for your kid or for
05:46yourself? Right. I mean, your kid turned 11 yesterday, which is prime jersey
05:51wearing age. And if he came to you and said, Dad, I want a Giants jersey and you
05:56would have said, which one? Yeah. What do you want? And he would have said, in
06:01this moment, Logan Webb, Chappie. It might be Adamas. Might be. Which is, you
06:08know, he's never taken it about as a Giants. Exactly. But there's some
06:11excitement because he knows who that is. But that's my point to your question.
06:16Like right now, if you had a 10 or 12 year old and they were like, you know
06:20what? The Giants this year, I want a jersey. Do you want, who do you want? Do
06:25you want Logan Webb? You want Chapman? You want Adamas? Do you want Bailey? You
06:30want Jung-Hoo Lee? What do you want? Well, but I do think at least there are options.
06:35Yeah. Like I see a better or maybe, you know, like they've got, it's interesting
06:39that we talk about all the farm system rankings, which they're not wrong. Bryce
06:44Eldridge is the only thing right now that's resonating, which is kind of
06:50frightening, by the way. There's a lot, a lot, a lot of people who've already
06:53decided the Giants have their first baseman for the next 10 years. The guys
06:56never had a big league at bat. Yep. That's terrifying in and of itself. Also
07:01though, there's just been some, there's kind of been a brick wall in terms of,
07:07of, of people coming out of there and creating excitement. On the other hand, I
07:13can sit here and pick up a Giants roster right now and go, wait a minute. How can
07:18you tell me that there's, the farm system isn't producing anyone? Elliot
07:23Ramos just made the all-star team. Hayden Birdsong busted his way into
07:28potentially a rotation when no one was even thinking about him. And Patrick
07:34Bailey is, I mean, halfway point last year, he was flirting with being a
07:38national league all-star catcher. And then there's a list of others. Ryan
07:43Walker's going to be their closer this year. He has beaten out Camilo Duval.
07:47That's, that's already done. They're four days in. Yep. And there are people
07:51who are like, I don't know if Yaz is going to hold down right field or might
07:55it be Matos or Grant McCray or fingers flipping crossed Marco Luciano. That's
08:02funny. And Tyler Fitzgerald is going, like he came up last year and went, Oh,
08:06how about double digit bombs as a middle infielder? Why don't you go take second
08:10base? I don't know how any of those things are going to play out. My point
08:14is, is I think you're, it's a hard argument to sit here and say the Giants
08:18farm system's not producing anyone. Well, they did. They just did. Sure. But if you
08:23wind up 81 and 81, and those are your guys who are actually regular players
08:28and they all have okay years, did you really produce anything? You produce
08:33people who can play baseball, but if you don't make the playoffs and if you again
08:37are mediocre, did you really produce anything in the farm? And that's the
08:41counter-argument where, okay, Ryan Walker, closer, good. And Fitzgerald,
08:46sure. You hit 18 home runs and the team's not very good. And you know, Matos
08:51and Ramos and all the rest of it. And Luciano, we've all been waiting for and
08:56holding our breath. And Patrick Bailey had apparently fitness issues last year.
09:01If you ask people close to the team. So if you want to go through all the rest of
09:05it. And yeah, Hayden Birdsong, good little 12 start, start to the career. But
09:11if all that nets another mediocre year, did you really produce anything? No, but
09:16I mean, we don't know that answer. You don't know that answer yet. I'd be, I
09:21would be pretty surprised if every single name you just mentioned all played poorly
09:27this year. Right. But I mean, it'd be fair to say that half of those guys will
09:31be like, okay. And maybe a quarter of them would be good. And a quarter of them
09:35would be bad. That's kind of the way that that all breaks when you look at
09:39prospects. I mean, maybe, yeah, like, but, but to a certain degree, we're not
09:43actually even talking about prospects anymore. Like the list that I just
09:46mentioned, they're all big leaguers. They're here. Yeah, they're here. And to
09:50a degree had some sort of success last year. You know what I mean? I don't even
09:55know who the hell the starting right fielder is. I don't know. I don't know
09:59who that is. Uh, Grant McCray, some of you may not know who that is, but he's
10:04an interesting player with a lot of speed and some surprising pop and maybe
10:09more confidence than I realized. I don't know if you heard what he said earlier
10:12today, but he sort of was like, man, I like the way I look at our outfield. If
10:19you stick me, John, who and Ramos out there? Well, good luck hitting the ball
10:24into the gap, right? We're chasing everything down. And this guy's like, I
10:28mean, he's acting like, dude, that's, that's the outfield of the future here
10:32in Major League Baseball. And all of us are sitting here going, dude,
10:36collectively, that whole group has what one season. I mean, young, who had a
10:40quarter of a season. Ramos had three quarters of a season. McCray barely even
10:44came over. Yeah. But who knows what we're going to see from them? Maybe he's
10:48right. Maybe he's got something. Maybe he has becomes the, uh, the D H or, you
10:53know, McCray does or who knows, but long way to go. It's only February, but you
10:57look at the roster and you look at what could be in, it's exciting right now in
11:02February.
