00:00When is a successful apprentice like a reissued toy line?
00:04When they're molded in the original image.
00:06Here's your look at McFarlane Toys DC Direct, the new Batman Adventures, The Riddler.
00:30One of the Dark Knight's most infamous villains, Edward Nygma, enjoys flaunting his intellectual superiority by conducting crimes and leaving clues for Batman to piece together.
00:39While his habit constantly leads to the aptly named Riddler failing his criminal endeavors, his puzzle problem actually stems from not only his own narcissism and ego, but also from a deep-seated psychological compulsion.
00:49Because of this, the Riddler often finds himself a resident at Arkham Asylum following his inevitable capture.
00:54I don't know about finding him at a tennis court, but certainly if you are looking to find the Riddler and add him to your collection, he's available right now in stores or online.
01:01I'd like to thank, if I can, the folks over at McFarlane Toys that did provide this sample of the brand new Batman Adventures Riddler that we could have a look at in this review.
01:08The figure is, again, going to be using the same mold as the original DC Direct Riddler, which I'll be bringing in in a second.
01:13In the meantime, though, when it comes to his height, Edward Nygma stands at almost 6 inches in height, translating, though, to a figure 15 centimeters tall.
01:21Well, yeah, apparently a Riddler in a hand is worth two in my collection.
01:25Here's what the figure looks like with the original DC Direct Riddler.
01:28Now, right away, you may notice some considerable color changes between the one that we get from Taunt and his team to the one that we originally got from DC Direct.
01:35The colors seem a little sharper, I will say, on the original DC Direct one, but if you like the brighter colors of Nygma, the one that we're getting here from Taunt and his team definitely work a little bit better.
01:44Here's also what the figure looks like with also the Batman that we've already had a look at.
01:48In fact, we actually looked at him during this week.
01:49Let's bring in another one of the cohorts, one of the ones that he would probably meet at Arkham Asylum.
01:53Here's what the figure looks like.
01:55We're not with one of the more popular designs of the Clown Prince of Crime, but here's what he looks like with the DC Direct Joker.
02:00I did also want to bring in Mad Hatter here.
02:03My God, what have you done, my man, to this Mad Hatter?
02:06You know, one of the things I have noticed, though, with some of my DC Direct figures, and I've had Mad Hatter stored away in a bag for a while,
02:11and I noticed a lot of my figures when I was kind of going through my totes and pulling them back out,
02:15that they have all of this dust now settled on them.
02:18It's not the fact that they were in dusty conditions.
02:20I think it's some condition that the plastic tends to go after a while of having in your collection.
02:25Again, I've noticed this with the Mad Hatter.
02:27I mean, you can just wipe away the dust.
02:29It's not like it's permanently there.
02:30But it's something I have noticed with certain plastics, specifically certain plastics that DC Direct were using in the day.
02:37What also seems so funny is it's only the DC Direct figures I've stored away in bags.
02:41Riddler, for example, I've had out on display for a while, and I've never had any of the issues with the plastic starting to change that dusty look.
02:47It seems to only be affecting the figures that are sitting inside of freezer bags.
02:51Anyways, though, looking at the accessories that come in clue with Riddler, one can't help but notice, though, it comes in clue with a framed image.
02:56Now, this is a reproduction cell image from the Batman Adventures, specifically one starring, of course, the Riddler.
03:03If you look on the back of this, it tells you everything you need to know.
03:06The animation cell reproduction comes from Judgment Day Season 2, Episode 9.
03:11Synopsis has the new vigilante is on esprit to serve his own brand of justice to Gotham's rose.
03:16Batman must apprehend the mysterious assailant before he crosses the line.
03:21I remember that. That was the judge.
03:22Oh, man, I would love it if we could get ourselves the judge.
03:24But, air date is October 31st on Halloween.
03:27Oh, that's a bummer.
03:281998.
03:29Directed by Kurt Gaeta.
03:31Storyboard by Rich Fogel and Alan Burnett.
03:34Animation services by Coco Enterprises again in Dong Yang.
03:38And music by Michael McCostian.
03:40I think it's McCostian.
03:42You can also notice, too, that it does have a little flap on the back.
03:45So, if you're looking to have this displayed on the shelf, you can easily display that on your shelf.
03:48I've already got my Batman, actually, on the shelf as we currently speak.
03:52And I'm sure I'll be adding Riddler to that as well.
03:55Let's move that off to the side for at least right now.
03:57Something also that was shared with Batman, too, is that the figure does come in clear with a display stand.
04:00A brand new style of stand.
04:02Here's Batman's.
04:03I had a hard time holding on to that.
04:05Here's Batman's.
04:06Here's Riddler's.
04:06I mean, not that it really matters.
04:07You can see that they're identical to one another.
04:09They're not at all, though, identical to the original display stands that the DC Direct days had.
04:14Now, I'm still, again, using the example of Batgirl.
04:16I have a whole bunch of these stands sitting in bags, but I just decided to grab, like, Batgirl's.
04:19And you can see, like, while the stand itself is the exact same shape, the type of waist clip, again, is differently used here.
04:27Now, the original ones, essentially, basically what it was, was these pieces here would just peg in place.
04:32From what I remember, at least, you had to actually install these when you got them out of the packaging.
04:37But these waist clips never stayed intact.
04:39I mean, a lot of times when I was moving and fitting these around the waist of the figures, more times than not, usually these things would pop off.
04:45And I'd always have to go back and go, let a big, loud sigh that the entire household could hear.
04:50Then usually we just plug those back in place.
04:52The new stands, however, though, do the job much better.
04:55I mean, obviously, you can see it just uses a spring clip.
04:58It opens and closes, and you can easily fit this around Riddler's waist.
05:01Just unlike Batman, who had more of a struggle because he had to get it around his cape, Riddler, if I can, I don't know why I'm having such a hard time here.
05:07Riddler, you basically just clipped around his waist, and now the figure can be displayed this way.
05:11The one thing he doesn't actually have, though, as you can see right now, the one thing he doesn't have, though, and I'm kind of surprised to see that they didn't do this, Riddler doesn't have pegles on the bottoms of his feet.
05:21For that matter, though, the DC Direct one never had that either.
05:24But Batman did.
05:25Kind of leads me to believe, like, why couldn't they have just put a little peg right here as well?
05:29Maybe go back to the mold and add pegles on the bottoms of the feet.
05:31So if you don't like a waist clip necessarily, they could have used a peg instead on the display stand.
05:38Stop that.
05:39Let's move that off to the side.
05:41Now, for the accessories, I can't really go back and say like for like.
05:45Apples to apples, oranges to oranges, Riddler's to Riddler's.
05:48Some of the accessories, I'm sure, have stored away in, like, one big bag.
05:51That was probably not a good idea.
05:52Probably would have made more sense to have the accessories dedicated to each of those figures that I had in my collection.
05:57But back then, I was stupid.
05:58I was basically throwing everything into a big bag.
06:00So I got like a big bag of just random accessories.
06:03Good luck trying to go through those.
06:05From what I understand, I think these are exactly the same accessories that the original DC Direct Riddler would have also had as well.
06:11So he does have a couple of gripping hands.
06:14Actually, let's reset that a little bit.
06:16The figure does also already have closed fists on the ends of his forearms.
06:19I got to make sure I put that in there as well.
06:20But in addition to that, the figure does also have some C-clamp hands.
06:24Good for holding the cane.
06:26He does also have these hands, too.
06:28Now, the strange things about these hands is that they're not really specifically designed to hold the cane all the way down.
06:33However, though, if you take the cane and you sort of wedge it in between his finger and his pointer, you can have him holding the cane that way.
06:41If you actually look at it, though, there's no real way that the cane would fit all the way through.
06:45It's not really designed that way.
06:46But basically, yeah, you just take that and fit it on the edge of his hand and his finger, and Riddler can hold the cane that way, too.
06:53Changing out the hands, again, is very easy on these figures.
06:56The new plastic that they're using, actually, on these figures are a lot nicer than the DC Direct.
07:00It goes, you know, with some negatives and positives points.
07:03Obviously, the positive points are the fact that these figures are less likely to break.
07:06They're also a lot easier, I find, to change the hands out.
07:09So let's just grab a hand that we can use to hold the cane.
07:12We'll put that hand in place.
07:13Because even though they're long pegs, the plastic that they're using, I have less worries about any of these breaking.
07:18Says the guy that then will end up breaking.
07:21Let's not.
07:21Let's hope that we're not going to be breaking those.
07:23Just plug, though, the cane into his hand.
07:26Just like that.
07:28Yeah, if you may feel the need, you may also need to pry the hand away from it.
07:31There we go.
07:32I don't know why I was having a hard time there.
07:34Yeah, you can get the cane easily in his hand.
07:35I say easily.
07:36Easily get into his hand.
07:38And, of course, you can also swap the hand on the other side as well.
07:40Kind of really wish that this guy could have also had a dynamic hand.
07:43And, like, you know, something just to add a little bit of pizzazz.
07:45Some jazz hands.
07:46Jazz hands.
07:47Maybe had those also included with the figure as well.
07:50Those are all the accessories.
07:51Let's bring back, though, the original DC Direct Riddler.
07:54Now, you may look at this and already probably think the same thing as I was thinking.
07:58Like, while I do think that the plastic and the brighter of the green jumpsuit works a little bit better to look more like he did in the cartoon,
08:05the sharper features certainly are more apparent here on the DC Direct release of Riddler.
08:09A much darker skin complexion.
08:11You can also see as well his eyes were a little bit more beadier than the one that we're getting here from McFarlane Toys.
08:16Also, too, I've noticed that the question mark, is it maybe just my own eyes, but it does seem like it's a little bit bigger, more swollen than the original one.
08:24Some may still like this version of Riddler, and I still do.
08:27I will say, though, I do think I like the greener a little bit more, the green on the suit a little bit more on the newer release,
08:31but I wish, though, that the head was painted more like this, or molded in this kind of plastic.
08:36The bolder cap, as you can see, is also exactly the same.
08:39So there's nothing really at all changing from one figure to the other.
08:42This one also doesn't have visible joints like the Batman from before,
08:45so it's hard for me to also say, well, they've improved at least the build of the body,
08:49because in the case of this, the builds of the bodies are exactly the same.
08:52For the figure's articulation, going back to Riddler's head here,
08:56the head's going to obviously rotate all the way around.
08:58I keep saying obviously, like you guys are all in on this.
09:01The head does move up and down.
09:02You can also rock it back and forth as well.
09:05He doesn't have any waist swivel in this case, though.
09:08Riddler basically has one entire torso piece, and then all the limbs are attached to that.
09:12He does, though, successfully pull off almost a T-pose.
09:15I don't want to say successfully and then say almost.
09:17He pulls off almost 90 degrees of a bend.
09:19You can rotate those arms all the way around on this side, and obviously this side here, too.
09:24As a bend in the arm, obviously the forearm does rotate all the way around,
09:28and whatever hand you decide to display with Edward does rotate all the way around.
09:32The legs split out.
09:34They seem to be on hinge joints, obviously, and you can take the legs and move forward.
09:38You can move them back.
09:39Not much in the way of swivel at the top.
09:41There is, however, though, a single hinge in the knee down below.
09:43It doesn't really rotate necessarily, but you can move the ankle up and down and rock it back and forth as well.
09:48So, the figure doesn't have, and again, peg holes on the bombs of the feet.
09:52I do kind of wish, though.
09:53I know that's a small bit of quarters to have to work with, but had they only put peg holes on the bombs of the feet,
09:58you could also double up the display stand to make it also as a peg stand, too.
10:03Getting this guy, of course, the stand, bringing back in the original DC Direct Riddler.
10:08Still, I think there's merits to be made when it comes to the original DC Direct.
10:11Maybe some, again, some may prefer the darker color scheme of Edward Nygma.
10:16I think, like, I like the lighter green for the jumpsuit, but I do think I like the skin complexion a little bit more on the original.
10:22But one thing that I did mention when we looked at the new adventures of Batman that I'll say again when we look at Nygma here
10:27is that one of the benefits now of having McFarlane toys go back to the molds again for the DC Direct figures
10:33is it gives an opportunity to new-time collectors to try to pick up these figures now without breaking the bank in the process.
10:39Not so much a riddle, but more of a question if you are curious as to the price difference between the original DC Collectibles DC Direct Riddler
10:45and the one that we're getting from McFarlane toys.
10:47From what at least I can see on listings on eBay, there's only like one or two of them.
10:51There's about a difference of $20.
10:52Now, you would have to also keep in mind as well that what we're getting now from McFarlane toys
10:57would greatly affect any listings that would be there for the original ones.
11:00Because people that obviously are selling their ones now realize that there's other options available out there.
11:05$45 from what at least I can see for the listings.
11:08These figures are now selling for $25.
11:10So there's, again, about a $20 difference between the two.
11:13In the end, though, it still means that you're getting the exact same mold.
11:16Although the colors of the jumpsuit here on the Riddler are notably brighter than the one originally from DC Collectibles.
11:22You're getting a brand new, better-looking display stand.
11:24And I think you're getting the still lay of the land, the same lay of the land,
11:27when it comes to the accessories that the original Edward Nygma would have had as well.
11:30For me, I had opened up all my original DC Collectible figures,
11:34and in fact had looked at all of them here on this channel.
11:36And through the stupid decision-making on my part,
11:38I put everything in a big bag of just random accessories.
11:42I should have just had everything in separate dedicated bags.
11:45But I have all the original figures.
11:46I still feel I want the upgrade.
11:48I like the idea that they're now using a better-looking quality of plastic.
11:52The plastic does, though, seem brighter in some of the cases.
11:55And obviously with Batman, it made also from a shinier-looking suit.
11:58But one thing that maybe went for the DC Collectibles in a positive way was that the plastic that they were using,
12:03though being a more brittle kind of plastic, it made for a matte-colored plastic.
12:07And the suits themselves didn't have the sheen that we're getting here with now.
12:10You can obviously let me know down below in the comments section between this one and the DC Collectibles Riddler,
12:15which one do you think is the better-looking Nygma?
12:18Like I said, the Riddler right now, this version of Riddler is available right now either in stores or online.
12:22I'd like to, again, thank the folks over at McFarlane Toys that did provide the sample.
12:26If you guys certainly would like to weigh in your thoughts of what you think is the better-looking Riddler down below.
12:31And also, if you guys did enjoy this video, do it a solid.
12:34Throw it a like.
12:35If you guys want to stick around for more so.
12:37If you're taking a tally, by the way, we've now done the reviews for Batman.
12:39We've now wrapped up things for Nygma.
12:41There is one other review that's going to be coming your way from the new Adventures of Batman.
12:45Anybody want to take any guesses?
12:47I already told you.
12:48But yeah, make sure you hit the like.
12:49Make sure you turn on the subscribe.
12:50Make sure you hit that subscribe.
12:51Make sure you turn on the bell.
12:53Make sure you do all those things.
12:54But the most important thing is that you're coming back.
12:56As always, thanks for watching.
12:58See you guys next time.
