00:00Yes.
00:01Okay.
00:05Hi, first of all, I'm very happy to meet you.
00:24So, how was the journey from Mustard Fields to Mumbai Spotlight?
00:28You mentioned that word.
00:29Yes.
00:30Well, first of all, to all the audiences,
00:33Andhiri ki namaskaram.
00:36Well, from Mustard Fields to Mumbai Spotlight,
00:40I always say this, that my journey has been anything but conventional.
00:45I have, being a farmer's daughter,
00:48I was raised in the fields of Rajasthan,
00:51where my father never knew how to drive.
00:54But he made sure that his daughter would drive a 40-foot harvester and a tractor.
00:58Not because in his eyes we were just, we were, we were equal to sons, but we were unstoppable.
01:04And every day from fields to Mumbai to Telangana now.
01:11And my journey has been quite commendable.
01:15I am proud of myself, of where I was and where I am.
01:18From a 19-year-old girl with a childlike demeanor to a 21-year-old woman who is holding responsibilities and love of 1.4 billion people in her heart.
01:27That's what's something I always wanted and that's what I'm living.
01:30But as a farmer's daughter, when that sparkle of being into the beauty presence that comes to India, into your brain?
01:38I was 10 years of age when I first saw Aishwarya Raya Bachchan on television in her movie Devdas.
01:44She, she's beautiful.
01:46When I saw her eyes first, I was like, Mama, who is she?
01:51To, to, to which my mother replied, she is Miss World.
01:55Earlier I was, I was not familiar to the concept of, of Miss World.
01:59I was 10 years of age.
02:00I asked my mother, what is Miss World?
02:02What do they do?
02:03So my mother told me that as a Miss India, you go on to represent India at Miss World.
02:08Miss World and if, if you win Miss World, then you get the title of Miss World.
02:14And then I first, when I saw, when I started to follow, I realized that it, okay, we have to wear a crown and we'll get to wear glittery, glittery gowns and it'll be very pretty.
02:28But when you start to prepare about it, you get to know that, you know, to stand pretty and to stall, stall that confidently on stage.
02:36That requires a lot of resilience.
02:40I always say that success is a series of small wins and that, that small win come to different battles of, that you face each and every day.
02:48I first was a girl who never knew how to hold a mic.
02:52I was, my hands used to tremble as if, what would people say if I have my own opinion?
02:58But pageantry changed that aspect for me.
03:01I always say that for me, it has, it has changed my narrative and the narrative of other people around me, for me.
03:09And now I hold my mic with the same confidence as I do to my makeup brush.
03:14So have you ever practiced in front of the camera to be, to walk like a person who is in the beauty pageant?
03:22Isn't that what everyone do?
03:24Actors practice their dialogues.
03:26We as pageant, you know, pageant aspirant and pageant girls, we do practice our walks in front of the mirror, our postures, how we, you know, speak while we hold our mic.
03:36No, no, it is when you are in childhood.
03:38Yes, definitely.
03:39Even I do till now.
03:40Because, you know, it gives you a reflection of how you would see or portray yourself as in front of the mirror.
03:46And, you know, you are your best teacher.
03:47You can understand it in a very good way.
03:50So, standing in front of the mirror, I used to do it as a child with a lehenga on and now I do it in the gowns before stepping onto the stage.
03:59And even while coming to this interview, I did so.
04:01So, yes, you know, some habits don't leave you.
04:04You just mentioned that you dreamt of fascinating gowns.
04:08Yes.
04:08So, so many people thought that these beauty pageants are only about the physical appearances and the beautiful gowns.
04:15Is it that or is beyond that?
04:18It's beyond that.
04:19And I'm representing India at a pageant which is the oldest and a pageant which has the ethos of beauty with a purpose.
04:28And which actually combines with India's value of cultures of compassion where each and every value has the ability to change life.
04:38And that is what pageantry is about where you see the beauty in yourself but you also see the beauty in your purpose.
04:45And this world believe in pretty is as pretty does to which in Hindi we say sundar vahi hai jo sundar karta hai aur jo sundar karta hai vahi sundar hai.
04:53So, your external beauty will evolve but your internal beauty will stay forever with your character.
05:00So, in pageantry we do, people look onto the only external beauty but it's mostly the internal beauty, the beauty of your words, the beauty that you stand and the beauty how you make others stand tall next to you and the way you share your spotlight with them.
05:18So, you're from Rajasthan.
05:19Yes.
05:19So, this is the place of arts, artists and crafts.
05:24There's just so much culture there.
05:26So, are you going to represent all these on the stage of Miss World?
05:31I always say that I come from Rajasthan but from Rajasthan I carry the warmth of the deserted sun, the strength of its historical forts and the richness of its traditions.
05:45So, yes, I'm looking forward to represent the Rajasthan, the largest desert state of India to the world state.
05:54So, can people see that a girl who was from Rajasthan living in the city of storytellers is now in Telangana which is the heart of Deccan.
06:03And, you know, it's India, it's diverse and a woman who holds that, I think there's someone that they should know that she's unstoppable and she's India.
06:13So, you're looking gorgeous in this saree.
06:15Actually, so many people thought that the persons who are into the beauty pageants, they'll only wear modern dresses.
06:20But you're in the saree. Last time also I saw you in this saree only.
06:24I love saree. They're timeless.
06:25What kind of sarees would you really love?
06:28I love, I come from Rajasthan.
06:30I really love the chiffons, the georgette.
06:35But, you know, I've worked a lot in the Tamil TV commercials and even in Telugu.
06:40I've started to love the Kanji Aram sarees and the temple jewellery.
06:44You can't, if you are here, you cannot miss them.
06:48And Telangana has a long history of weaves where each and every, people tell me that here each and every piece is a handcrafted heritage.
06:57From Garwal sarees to Pochampalli ikkat weaves, intricate bidri wear and also Kalamkari sarees where stories are painted on the piece of fabric.
07:07So, yes, I always say here it's what hospitality in every heart, history in every corner and each fabric is a handcrafted heritage.
07:19Where it's not only the experience and the centuries of hard work of the artisans, but it's also the love, care and the warmth they've put into it.
07:27Yeah, this time Miss World event is going to be organised by Telangana.
07:30Yes.
07:31So, you have been in city from last one week I hope so and previously you visited so many places.
07:36So, this time you already went to the Charnar.
07:39Yes.
07:39Now, how was the place and you have gone through so many bangle shops, right?
07:43Yes.
07:43So, how was the experience?
07:45I bought a lot of bangles, a lot of glass bangles and I happened to be at the shop which is 250 years old who used to, they, I met with the fifth generation who's working in the shop.
07:56And all the five generations have served for the Nizams and they told me that it took one, one month to get their bangles ready.
08:06And I was so fascinated that, oh, would they ask you to get it made of gold?
08:10I was so, I was so into it that I used to ask them this question and they were very, very patiently telling me that no, it was not of gold but we do it of the material called luck.
08:21And I saw a lot of women buying bangles from there.
08:27I ate a lot of food around Charnar, the Malai Ban Maska and the Irani Chai, the Karachi Biscuit, Shadood.
08:35And, you know, Charminar is the iconic place in Hyderabad.
08:40It is timeless and it is in the old part of Hyderabad.
08:47So, when I saw people, some of them were having a poetic jam.
08:53And Talangana has long been a cradle of poetic brilliance and Mirza Galip, artists like Mirza Galip, they have been tied to its legacy.
09:02So, around Charminar, it was poetry, it was timeless, it was, it was, it was, it was full of grace and it was, I think, the best experience I've ever had.
09:13And you're going to visit Ramappa Temple, which is a historic place, an iconic place.
09:17Yes.
09:18So, what you are expecting and what about the architecture, have you been there before?
09:22No, I haven't been there but what I'm looking forward to is to witness, witness the architecture from, you know, from, from, from very close.
09:31We always, I saw Charminar but I saw it from afar because, you know, it's very huge.
09:38When I, what I'm looking forward to visit at Ramappa Temple is to see the intricacies of the architecture.
09:44The, I've heard that, you know, the, the, the, the scriptures and the, and the statues are made by, by, by, I think it's a expression of real-time models
09:56who are standing, some are playing an instrument and it's made on floating bricks.
10:01It is shaped, it is made on a star-shaped platform.
10:04To be able to witness that with my naked eyes on that platform, I've never touched or never been to such iconic place.
10:12And to visit Telangana's first UNESCO World Heritage Site which was built in 1213 AD and I'm looking forward to it.
10:21And I'm sure that I take back a lot of memories, a lot of strength of that temple and a lot of blessings from there.
10:28So, not only Ramappa, Telangana government is planning to take all the Miss World Presence to so many places.
10:33Yes.
10:33So, which one you are awaiting very excitedly?
10:36Well, I'm looking forward to Yadagiri Gutta Temple and Buddha Vanam.
10:40These are the two destinations where the list goes endless.
10:44But, I'm a spiritual person but when it comes to temples, I'm the most excited one to visit there.
10:49So, when I was told that we are planning to go to Ramappa Temple, I was the first one to cheer that, let's go!
10:55So, when it comes to your personal things, so every girl look up to you, like you are a Miss India.
11:03So many want to become a Miss India or Miss World as you were once you were imagined.
11:10So, everyone want to have their skin very good and hair care routine.
11:15So, what are your hair care routine and skin care routine?
11:18What you eat actually?
11:19Well, I always tell it to everyone that it is better to eat your skin care rather than applying it on the skin.
11:27It is and we always believe that going to gym, it's only for fitness but no, it is for lifestyle.
11:34You build a lifestyle.
11:35You eat healthy, you breathe healthy, then you look healthy.
11:40It comes with a lifestyle.
11:42You can't just not eat anything and then go to the gym because it affects your lifestyle, it affects your mental health.
11:49So, stay good, eat good, stay fit and stay resilient.
11:55So, this time Miss World has a theme, like with a beauty with purpose.
12:00So, what is your purpose?
12:01What is the purpose you are carrying?
12:02It has long been a history that Miss World is associated with the noble mission of beauty with the purpose.
12:10Where not only each and every candidate gets an opportunity to represent themselves, but also their country and also the people who they are voicing for.
12:18And I always think about it, Nandini, if you were a girl who is 19 years of age, going to college, would you have a purpose in your life?
12:26No, but you are going to college and you happen to enter Miss India, you won it.
12:32You are the nation's chosen Miss India, but your purpose chose you.
12:36And now I live my beauty with the purpose project, Ekta.
12:40And thank you to the Miss World organization and my Miss India organization for imbibing those values.
12:46That, you know, when you get the spotlight, make sure that you give the people who are often remain unheard, whose voices often remain unseen and the causes that often go ignored.
13:00And my project is project Ekta.
13:03Ekta means oneness.
13:05And it's about building an incredible and independent and an inclusive community.
13:11And it is inspired from my uncle, my paternal uncle, my cha-cha, who has polio in his tongue, has developmental delays and intellectual disabilities.
13:23Growing up, I always saw that he's struggling to live in the world because opportunities were not offered.
13:29Love is always conditional and there's struggles in each way where people, how the people even see him, how they make him feel awkward.
13:36They always saw him with the lens of pity or fear instead of respect.
13:42My aim from project Ekta through project Ekta is to see people, look them with the lens of respect where inclusion is not just about charity or sympathy or, you know, or just sympathizing with their disability.
14:00But it's empowering them.
14:01It's telling them, you know, you can do it.
14:03And, you know, in English, there's a concept like trust fall.
14:08When you know that someone's sitting behind you or standing behind you, if you fall, there's someone to catch you.
14:13Yes.
14:14They have the belief that I'm there.
14:16They know that Nandini Didi is there to protect them, to help them, to empower them, to make them financially independent.
14:23I'm doing everything in my power to make sure that, you know, no one sees them with the lens of sympathy.
14:31No one, everyone changes their perception towards them because, you know, at the end, when we change our perception to see them the way they are, they change the perception.
14:40They think that we are unstoppable.
14:41Our dreams could, can be real.
14:43I recently hosted a sales kiosk at a corporate office.
14:47There were two girls who had come with stuff that they make.
14:51There were ceramics.
14:52There were jute bags.
14:53And everything was handmade, even chocolates.
14:55And I remember that the girls were so scared that they told me, Didi, can you please come with us?
15:03We are scared.
15:04What if no one buys it from us?
15:05What if people shy away from us?
15:08Or what if we are not able to speak to them properly?
15:11When I spoke to people about encouraging them, they were willing to do so.
15:15And because they said, we have never experienced such thing.
15:18And when they went to the stall and when they start interacting, they realized that not only that they got the exposure, not only that they are earning, but they are getting the hope that their dreams of running a business could be real one day.
15:36And that's where I saw that Project Take That is coming to life.
15:41And I hope that I am able to build a world where ramps are built without reminders and dignity is not debated.
15:47And that world is possible through Project Take That's a great idea and great initiative, actually.
15:53So, Nandini, I just want to ask you one thing as you are into the beauty pageants.
15:58There are so many young girls who are worrying about their color, their body structure and all.
16:04Is it really that important to excel in any career or to achieve anything?
16:10So, is our color or your personality really need a great personality, a great color, white skin?
16:17Is that important?
16:18Definitely, no, ma'am.
16:19I stand by it.
16:21And, you know, there's a saying that says, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.
16:26I always say that beauty is everywhere.
16:28You are an important person.
16:29You are an inspiring person.
16:31I swear that I also mentioned that somewhere.
16:34I must have missed it somewhere.
16:37But I always say that beauty is not in the eyes of the beholder, but it's everywhere.
16:42It depends upon the person who is beautiful inside to see the beauty outside.
16:47And I'm sure that I see the beauty in you.
16:49You are stunning.
16:50And I'm sure that you see the beauty in me.
16:52And that's how we make this world beautiful.
16:55We don't look...
16:57I told you that, as I always say, that beauty evolves.
17:02But the purpose and the character stays.
17:04If your character is strong and if your purpose is strong, no one can take it away from you.
17:10People ask me, Nandini, how do you survive in the spotlight?
17:13I always tell them, you know what?
17:15I'm not a product of pageantry.
17:17But I'm a product of purpose, passion and a lot of pride of my farming background.
17:23So when I come to the platform where I'm representing India, I'm not only representing the pageantry,
17:29but I'm representing the women, the hearts of 1.4 billion Indian individuals
17:34and the people who are living around the world at that platform,
17:37who once believed that they could not.
17:39And now I'm living their dream.
17:41I'm living my dream as well.
17:43So no, nothing is on the face.
17:45Everything is in the heart.
17:45It's just...
17:46It depends on the other person's heart to see the beauty in you
17:49and in your heart and in your purpose and in your life.
17:52It's great words, actually.
17:54So finally, your contest is going to win.
17:57Yes.
17:5710 days away.
17:58Oh my God.
17:58So how you are preparing and how confident you are.
17:59You're giving me a countdown.
18:01How confident you are as around 20 countries are going to participate.
18:05120 countries.
18:06120 countries.
18:07So how confident you are and what the message you want to give for the young girls
18:13who really want to become a Miss India or Miss World.
18:17I'm looking forward to, for all the countries to come down to India
18:22to experience the richness, the beauty and the magic that India has within itself.
18:27And Hyderabadis are known for their legendary hospitality.
18:31So I am sure that they will love the city.
18:34They love the state.
18:36They'll get to learn more.
18:38I come from India.
18:39I come from India and I come from the northwest coast of India.
18:43And to be here in south, I'm learning a lot about India.
18:46I never knew that what Hyderabadis speak, it's known as Dakini.
18:50Dakini.
18:51And I'm getting to learn a lot more about India, about Hyderabad,
18:56about Telangana while staying here.
18:58So I think 25 days would be a little less amount of time for them to understand
19:03and witness the beauty and the magic of this country.
19:07But I'm sure that they will take a lot of memories.
19:11And we are coming by the motto and the quote of Telangana Zarurana.
19:15But I always say that please make sure that you go by with the memory of Telangana Zarurana.
19:20And the one message that I would want to give to all the girls
19:27who come from different backgrounds, different cultures, different walks of life
19:31is that don't let others' perception be a perception of you.
19:36I was once mocked for my dreams that you come from a small village,
19:40you come from a small town.
19:41Do you think that your dreams will hold the value to make their own shape
19:46or make their own place in the city of storytellers or the city of dreams?
19:52And I was mocked because I like to dress up.
19:55Now I've changed the narrative.
19:57I've changed the perception.
19:58Not only I come from a patriarchal society,
20:01but a place where having two daughters in a family is always taken as tension.
20:07Yes.
20:08But my father, his resilience and my success, my milestone has proved that
20:14we are not equal to tension.
20:17We are equal to ten sons.
20:19And it doesn't matter where you come from, but it truly matters where you want to go.
20:24And no matter where you come from, what is your background,
20:27but if you hold the beauty of your dreams,
20:29I'm sure that you can live the beauty with your dreams.
20:33It's great and all the best.
20:34Thank you so much.
20:35So, thank you.
