00:00What's next for Suckyhall Street?
00:03This street was once one of the most buzzing places in the city,
00:07lined with busy and bustling shops,
00:10from smaller independents to a hub of major department stores.
00:14There were theatre houses, cinemas, dance halls,
00:17music venues, restaurants and cafes.
00:21If you were in the business of retail or hospitality,
00:24this was the place to be in Glasgow.
00:26Fast forward to today, it's barely recognisable from what it used to be.
00:31It's a shell of the past, a rummage of empty, decaying buildings,
00:35where lots of life used to be.
00:38It was a change in consumer habits that knocked the frame in the early 2000s,
00:42when online shopping triggered a cultural shift,
00:46and there was less of a need to come out here.
00:48The decline was gradual, until the impact of COVID-19 almost wiped it out for good.
00:53Well, you may have noticed, much of the street has been closed off,
00:58under construction for months now.
01:01This is part of Glasgow City Council's Avenues project,
01:04where Suckyhall Street will receive £5.7 million for a revamp.
01:10Roads, pavements and footways are to be reconstructed,
01:13with more greenery, street lighting, rain gardens and improved pedestrian access.
01:18It is hoped, this will attract more people to the area,
01:22and with that, more business owners.
01:25While physically visiting a shop isn't as necessary anymore,
01:29there still is a yearning for the sociability it offers.
01:32Suckyhall Street has a lot of nostalgic value for a lot of people.
01:37The street once thrived, and it is hoped it can return to its former glory.
