00:00 Hello, my name is Lawrence Smith and this is your Sussex World News Bulletin for Wednesday, March 6th, 2024.
00:07 Artists of all ages have a chance for their work to be exhibited at Wakehurst this spring.
00:11 East Sussex College, in collaboration with Wakehurst, is set to launch the Spring Inter-Community Art Competition on Monday, April 1st.
00:18 Organisers said the contest is a celebration of the connections between nature, community and the season of spring.
00:24 A spokesperson said, "Whether it's painting, drawing, photography, lino cut, collage, print or any other 2D artwork,
00:31 participants are encouraged to convey their heartfelt sentiments about this inspiring theme."
00:36 A battle by residents to save a wartime village airfield near Horsham from development has ended in victory, at least for the time being.
00:43 Fifteen airmen lost their lives at the historic airfield at Coolham during the Second World War,
00:48 and there has since been a long-running campaign to preserve the area as a permanent memorial.
00:52 But plans were put forward last year to demolish a barn on the airfield site and build two houses, which sparked huge local opposition.
00:59 Horsham District Council this week turned down the development plans,
01:02 saying that insufficient information had been provided over water neutrality and that the development "failed to reflect the rural character of the site".
01:11 An upfield man is aiming to raise charity money by taking an ice bath every day for a year.
01:16 Variety, the children's charity, has announced that Josh Smith, 32, began the unique challenge to support them
01:23 after his seven-year-old daughter was hospitalised with chickenpox, which then developed into sepsis.
01:29 She made a full recovery.
01:31 Josh now has fewer than 100 days to go for his ice bath challenge, and people can support him at www.justgiving.com.
