00:00 Supes may have to stop at a prison for penance-seeking Zod.
00:04 Here's your look at the brand-new McFarlane Toys DC Page Puncher Ghost of Krypton Kryptonian Armor Superman.
00:10 [music]
00:31 Haunted by the vision of a spectral General Zod seeking salvation, Superman embarks on a perilous journey into the Phantom Zone,
00:37 where a Kel-El discovers an army of deadly Brainiac drones.
00:40 Superman soon learns that Val Zod, the Superman of Earth-2, has also been lured into the zone by ghosts from his past.
00:47 Although powerless in the Phantom Zone, the Men of Steel donning protective Kryptonian armor suits,
00:51 vow to vanquish Brainiac and the menacing Mechanical Army.
00:55 Goes to show that sometimes even the Man of Steel needs more steel.
00:58 Just before, of course, we get a closer look at the armored Kryptonian suit Superman from the Ghosts of Krypton,
01:03 I'd like to thank the folks over at McFarlane Toys that did provide this sample we could have a look at.
01:08 Thanks to them, in fact, we're going to be looking at the rest of this figure line, but we wanted to start things off first with Superman.
01:13 The figure of Superman is going to stand about 7.5 inches in height, or the figure is going to be 19 centimeters tall.
01:20 As for scaling Supes, the scale might be a little bit off, bringing one of my favorites right now.
01:24 This is the action comic Superman that, more importantly, got packed along with Atomic Skull,
01:28 so it's the lighter color version of him, but he isn't going to be the same size.
01:31 You could say that he's got the Kryptonian armor, but the thing about it, though, is that his soles are only just that thick,
01:36 so he really shouldn't be that big.
01:38 It's, though, until you compare him with another armored Superman in a suit, that he's more scaled in size.
01:44 Here's what he looks like with the unchained armor Superman, and you can see that this version of Superman, yes, still has thicker boots,
01:50 but he's a little bit more, at least in scale, with this one than he is the action comics version.
01:54 This figure is a bit of an oddity.
01:56 Normally, when you get an armored Superman like this, the armor is all permanently attached onto his body.
02:01 With the Kryptonian armor, though, this version of Superman, you can actually take it off.
02:06 Before we get down to the details on Superman's armor, let's first look at the fact that the figure is a page puncher,
02:11 so he does get himself an issued comic, this one entitled Ghosts of Krypton.
02:15 It was probably perfect that I did start with Superman. It just happens to be one of four.
02:19 And flipping through the beginning of the pages, at least we get treated to a classic-looking Superman with his red trunks.
02:24 As we continue, though, through the pages, first of all, Superman is greeted, not by the Ghost of Marley, but the Ghost of General Zod.
02:31 He comes to Superman, basically telling him that he repents all his sins, and Superman decides to go into the Phantom Zone to retrieve him.
02:39 Most of that will then be carried on to the remaining comics, but at least at the end of it, you see a pretty neat-looking armored Superman.
02:45 Also, as well, on the back, it's advertising some of the page punchers.
02:49 I'm not sure if they're even still doing the slightly smaller page punchers. I kind of feel like they did stop doing those, didn't they?
02:55 That's also the back of the comic. If you did like, though, the front of the comic, you're also treated to it again with the trading card.
03:00 The only thing I don't like about the trading card, though, is if you're looking at it, it is literally just a part taken from the front of the cover.
03:07 Unfortunately, though, the part that's also been taken over is the bottom of the "S".
03:11 I just wish, though, that... I mean, obviously, if you're looking at the trading card, the trading card's fine. The artwork looks good.
03:16 But just having a little bit of a curly Q at the bottom there just seems a little out of place.
03:21 You'd think that they would have gone in there and just digitally removed the bottom of the "S".
03:24 Anyways, though, the nice-looking card. On the back, it's still the same read-up I read at the beginning of this review.
03:29 So, you can pause it, really, and read it if you want, but I beat you to it. I've already done it.
03:34 Putting it off to the side, the figure also comes included with a display stand.
03:37 Yes, it's the same display stand as we're normally treated to, with the DC logo printed down below. One peg.
03:42 We know, obviously, the details of these figures stands by now. So, we can move that off to the side.
03:46 The figure actually stands fine on his own, although with the back heaviness, I mean, he's got a lot more weight on the top of his shoulders as well.
03:52 You want to make sure you kind of keep this on the ready. I'm just going to put it over there in the meantime.
03:56 Like I said, though, the figure does actually have removable armor, which was a really interesting thing to see.
04:00 The other Superman that we will be looking at also as well, Valzod, does also come in two versions.
04:06 He's going to come with the version that doesn't have the armor.
04:09 I believe there's also going to be a release where he's going to have the armor already on his body.
04:13 This is actually something that is going to be removable. I didn't want to remove it just yet.
04:17 Obviously, though, there's so much time and so much effort that they put into sculpting the suit.
04:21 I did want to spend a little bit of time talking about that.
04:23 For Superman's face, at least what face we see right now, reminds me a little bit of a Morton Joe from Fury Road.
04:30 You can see a little bit of that as well. The paint is really nicely done here, not only on his face,
04:33 but for what little at least we see right now, as well as his mouthpiece. Looks really cool.
04:38 It is a little on the looser side, just because again, this is going to be eventually removed.
04:42 He has a Superman emblem there still on the front.
04:44 So even though Superman has to go into the Phantom Zone, he has to still represent the Kal-El, the House of El symbol.
04:51 He's also got a little bit of a decorative detail there on his other shoulder.
04:53 It's not the same one that actually has on this side. Some really cool sculpting going on here.
04:58 The use of the silvers, the use of the golds work really well for this particular suit.
05:02 Even though, again, it's not a classic looking Superman armor, it does look really neat on the figure.
05:07 The parts that he does have that are red at least, aren't even really red either.
05:10 They're kind of almost more of a lighter, I want to say like pinkish red,
05:14 but they've painted nicely some additional silver on there as well.
05:16 I suppose there is always the opportunity that they probably could have gone in there and added just a little wash of paint,
05:21 just to bring out some of the details.
05:23 Especially like things like his skirting, for example, or even like his arm guards.
05:27 I mean, it looks great, but just think how much better it could have looked if they just added a wash.
05:31 Just a clear, very thin out finish of black paint, just brushed it over across the surface.
05:35 I'm sure really talented customizers out there could easily go in there with a little bit of paint,
05:39 a little bit of time, a little bit of patience,
05:41 and really jazz up this armor a lot more than what it's looking like right now.
05:45 The neat thing is also about this figure is the fact that he's also sporting a cloth cape.
05:49 More and more it seems to be the case when we're getting these DC Multiverse and Page Puncher figures from McFarlane
05:53 that they're now going the direction of cloth capes.
05:56 I don't know how you feel about cloth capes.
05:58 Based on really the fact that most of my majority of the earlier DC Multiverse figures tend to have molded plastic capes,
06:04 I normally would have been on the fence of saying, "Okay, I like more sculpted capes than fabric capes."
06:10 But now it seems to be the trend that they're going to more fabric cape.
06:13 I gotta say, it does make the figure feel a little bit more of a higher grade.
06:16 Am I the only one who thinks that? You can let me know down below.
06:19 The material that they use by the cape, though, isn't as elastic-like as normal capes would be.
06:25 It's actually a decent quality of fabric that they end up using.
06:27 And when it's attached, it's not attached actually to the armor.
06:30 It's attached to his shoulders underneath the armor.
06:33 With the way the figure is right now, he still retains decent levels of articulation,
06:38 although things like his head, for example, is going to be a little bit more limited.
06:41 His arms still manage to move out. You can move them forward and back.
06:44 The figure does have still bicep swivel and still a double hinge on the elbow.
06:47 The things that you can't really get as much access to is his hands, for example.
06:51 Now, again, these are going to be sliding off in a second, as well as his torso armor here.
06:55 But he still has pretty decent levels of articulation.
06:58 Upper torso ball joint, lower torso ball joint, all the stuff that normally goes along with DC Multiverse figures.
07:03 The legs go forward, the legs go back. The figure does have a double hinge on the knee.
07:07 And then he does have your standard level of articulation here, an ankle pivot back and forth.
07:11 And you can also move it up and down, as well.
07:13 And, yes, in case you're curious, the figure does have toe articulation,
07:16 although it's a little harder to kind of get in there and move his feet.
07:19 Okay, so if you wanted to start to dismantle Superman here,
07:22 the first thing you really would want to do is remove the head.
07:25 It's a little harder to do because there's just so much going on around him.
07:29 Unfortunately, though, you have to kind of really remove the head,
07:33 just because in order to get everything off of him, this has to basically slide over his body.
07:37 So the head is the only thing that's really getting in the way.
07:40 You're going to have to remove that first.
07:42 Stepping back for a second, I can actually get the head removed.
07:44 I found it was actually easier if you pull it off from the back.
07:47 Sort of just use the leverage of the front face to kind of pry the peg off.
07:51 You can remove the ball joint, of course, there.
07:53 And then from there, you can just--I'm just going to put the figure down here for a second.
07:56 We're going to remove his face plate.
07:58 You can also take that off, and you get a pretty good-looking Superman underneath.
08:02 Now, while we're not going to put the head on just yet,
08:05 the other thing we're going to want to obviously address is the fact that you can take the entire torso piece off.
08:09 It's not, again, attached at all by the cape.
08:12 The cape is still something that's going to stay behind, and that basically just detaches completely.
08:16 I mean, these side shoulder pieces are only attached by ball joints,
08:19 which is one thing I actually forgot to mention when we were talking about the articulation on the figure.
08:22 This actually is on ball joints, too, so you can move these around.
08:26 Taking the armor piece off from the top of his torso,
08:29 we can then really go back and retrieve Superman's head.
08:32 We're going to pop it back in place.
08:34 Now, again, I've done this only once, but in both times that I was doing this,
08:37 I ended up having to heat the head in hot water, because it was really hard to get that back in place.
08:42 Taking my own advice, I ended up heating it back up again,
08:44 just so I could easily pop the head back onto the neck.
08:47 With Superman's head back onto his neck, let's go ahead and now address his gauntlets.
08:51 The gauntlets, you would assume you'd have to remove it by the wrists, but they made it a lot easier.
08:55 If you look at the side of the gauntlet, here's the interior of it, by the way,
08:58 you only need to detach it. They're attached, actually, by pegs.
09:02 So, once you're free on the one side, you're basically just going to pry this around his forearm,
09:07 and it just slides off like this.
09:10 While I do really like the look of Superman's armor underneath,
09:12 what it basically then leaves me behind is all these extra pieces that are just ultimately going to be going back into a bag somewhere.
09:18 We'll do the exact same thing on this side. We're just going to detach the peg.
09:22 I found, if anything, the hardest thing was just remembering which side was the peg,
09:26 but I think it's the closest to the cape.
09:28 We're just going to unpeg it that way and slide it off of his forearm.
09:32 For his skirt, you'll spin the figure around, and the skirt is attached here and here.
09:37 So, you're just going to remove it on one side, remove it on the other.
09:40 The skirting for his armor is the easiest to remove, and just going to remove that completely.
09:44 His legs work somewhat the same way as his gauntlets.
09:48 So, if you look at the back, these will detach.
09:51 And again, you want to make sure you figure out which side goes first.
09:54 Just detach it. I think it's actually the outside. Is it the outside?
09:57 It maybe is the outside here. There we go. It was the inside.
10:01 Just detach that, and then you're going to remove the entire calf piece.
10:05 And then we'll do it on this side as well.
10:08 So, just again, get that cape out of the way.
10:10 Just going to remove it.
10:11 The only thing, unfortunately, by removing all these pieces, it's a little bit more obvious with the skirting,
10:15 is that it leaves behind... I'm going to just remove this. It's a little bit more stubborn.
10:20 One thing, unfortunately, though, is it does leave behind these notable slots on the back of his body.
10:24 I mean, obviously, the cape is going to be covering over that anyway, so you're never really going to be able to see it.
10:28 And that's what Superman looks like with the armor now all removed.
10:31 Again, I've got now all these extra pieces that just will ultimately go back in the bag.
10:35 Val Zod, again, we are getting a standalone release of him.
10:38 So, he's essentially going to be using a very similar body here as Superman.
10:41 And then when we look at him, we're going to be bringing back in Superman for comparisons.
10:44 He is also going to be getting an armored version.
10:46 So, I wonder if we are going to be getting just a Superman in a standalone looking like this,
10:50 without all the extra pieces over top of it.
10:52 From his body, it kind of looks a little bit like New 52 Superman, which I was a big fan of.
10:56 The higher notable collar here on Superman's body, not to mention all the additional armor detailing that he has.
11:02 Yes, there probably could have been opportunities that they probably could have gone in there and washed a little bit more,
11:06 just to bring the details out a bit.
11:07 But being that Superman's body, at least his armor suit here, primarily is blue,
11:11 I think by adding anything over top of that would probably make it a little bit more muddier.
11:15 He has a slight variation of his Superman shield here, where now has all these little tab pieces on the side.
11:21 It's not removable, by the way.
11:22 And he also has a very New 52 Superman looking belt area there as well.
11:26 The only thing that he's actually absent in is a little bit of red down below in his boots.
11:31 But, I mean, again, if you really wanted to, I suppose you probably could go in there and paint it.
11:34 I'm fine just to leave it really as the blue.
11:36 It looks really good.
11:37 I like also the choice of blue that they decided to go with here with Superman.
11:40 The red, I don't know if I would say works as well with the blue, especially with the color of his cape.
11:45 I feel like it probably could be a little bit darker than what it actually is.
11:48 But the cape, again, is attached here on this side and this side here.
11:51 And again, it's a really good quality cape that he has.
11:54 For the articulation, obviously, we're not going to run through that now,
11:56 because the figure is going to retain all the same levels of articulation at the very most.
12:00 He would have even more motions in his body, just because now he doesn't have the cumbersome armor in the way.
12:05 All in all, though, it's a nice looking Superman.
12:07 Even if the armor wasn't removable, I think the armor on the suit does look good on him.
12:12 I don't feel like I would be disappointed by it.
12:14 The added kind of surprise to that was the fact that you could actually take the pieces off.
12:18 I don't think it was actually even advertised anywhere on the packaging.
12:21 But then, looking at the things that were on Superman, I started to kind of flick and move things around.
12:26 And I thought, after a while, "Hey, wait a minute. His mouthpiece does seem loose, as well as the top of his shoulders."
12:31 I started again to kind of move things around, and eventually found out that all the pieces were coming off.
12:36 And again, a really pleasant surprise.
12:37 Because generally, again, when you get Superman in armor, the armor is something that's permanently molded to his body.
12:42 This time around, McFarlane and his team decided to do something a little bit more clever,
12:46 by making the armor pieces removable.
12:48 And I think that was a really nice touch for the figure.
12:50 Believe me, it's not lost on me that my love for this figure might have something to do with the fact that the suit looks very similar to New 52.
12:56 The higher collar, not to mention the color of blue that they went with, are all very much things you would check off when you think of New 52's Superman.
13:03 The only thing that's missing, though, is the Superman emblem on the back of his cape.
13:06 Which, really, if you are displaying the figure anyways with his armor, you would never really see.
13:10 The thing I really like about the armor, obviously, is the fact that it's removable.
13:13 I mean, if you want to commit to the idea of having the armor always on Superman, it does, though, limit a little bit of movement for him.
13:19 But he still has some decent levels of posability.
13:22 He's just, though, a lot more posable when he starts to shed some of that armor.
13:25 The armor underneath looks to be very similar to the one we're getting with Val Zod.
13:29 So when we do eventually look at that figure, I will be bringing back in this Superman so you guys can see the differences between the two.
13:35 The head sculpt for what we saw originally from Superman with the mouth plate on does, yes, look a little like a Morton Joe.
13:40 But once the face guard is off, I think it's a decent head sculpt for what we got with Superman as well.
13:45 He doesn't have, obviously, any interchangeable hands, so he's always going to have closed fists.
13:49 I mean, obviously, a lot of the cost of producing this went into the armor that was removable.
13:54 So I can excuse the fact he doesn't really have any other accessories than his armor, than his trading card, and, of course, the included comic.
14:00 Which just, again, happens to be issue one of four, with the remaining issues we will be looking at in the upcoming reviews.
14:06 What do you guys think of the figure? Let me know down below in the comments section.
14:08 And if you do decide to pick this figure up for yourself, do you plan on displaying it with the armor on, or do you decide you want to display it, as I've got displayed right now in the rotisserie, with the armor all off?
14:18 Big thank you, once again, to the folks over at McFarlane Toys that did provide the sample of the brand new Page Punchers Ghost of Krypton Kryptonian Armor Superman, that we had the chance to have a look at in this review.
14:27 If you guys did enjoy this video, I want to throw out a like.
14:29 If you guys are loving the content you guys are seeing, and you're on board to see the remaining reviews of Ghosts of Krypton Superman figures, definitely make sure you're coming back here on a regular basis.
14:37 If you also want to check out other things I've looked at from McFarlane Toys, well, hey, you're in luck.
14:41 Popping up at the very end of this video, everybody, there'll be playlists. One for McFarlane Toys, one, hey, maybe for even Superman.
14:48 So feel free to check those out if you have a little bit of time on those hands of yours.
14:52 As always, guys, thanks for watching. See you guys next time.
