00:00:00All right, we are close.
00:00:14We are less than two weeks away from Patriots Training Camp, which officially opened July
00:00:1824th.
00:00:19It's Wednesday.
00:00:20Be there or come another day because other practices will definitely be more entertaining.
00:00:25And as we get closer, I've teased this, I want to say the last couple of months, new
00:00:30segments, new guests.
00:00:32We're just taking it to a whole nother level.
00:00:34But today we have to throw up a stop sign because we cannot myth bust, which was the
00:00:38plan for today's podcast episode.
00:00:39So instead, shout out to Amit, shout out to Joey, shout out to Jackson, who are the producers
00:00:45of this podcast for stitching together a best of.
00:00:48So you are going to hear snippets of some of our best stuff over the last three to four
00:00:52months.
00:00:53You're going to hear from Devin McCourty and James White, Bob Soce, scheduled talk, breakdown.
00:00:57What are the Patriots look like two years from now?
00:00:59So if you did not listen to every single episode over the last three, four months, first of
00:01:03all, I forgive you.
00:01:04Second of all, this is everything that you missed.
00:01:09And I want to shout out Amit, Joey and Jackson again, because, you know, I thought about
00:01:13this a lot when I first started doing TV around here, is that it's the producers, it's the
00:01:18camera guys, it's the freaking satellite in space that really acts like the offensive
00:01:22line.
00:01:23When we talk about running the football, you've heard me say this a billion times.
00:01:26The guy holding the ball is both the one who gets the yards and is probably the least important
00:01:31in that equation because running the football is a function of how many people on defense
00:01:35are in the box and how much ass is your offensive line kicking.
00:01:39So you watch me like you watch the running back hold the ball and go through the hole
00:01:43or bounce it out or kind of spin out, do whatever he does.
00:01:46But the only reason that that running back goes anywhere, the only reason this podcast
00:01:50reaches anyone is because those guys, again, Amit, Joey and Jackson, thank you very much
00:01:53for stitching this together.
00:01:55And so without that, any further, I'm going to take a knee here.
00:01:58This is the intro.
00:01:59The best of Pat's Interference from the last three, four months.
00:02:02We'll be back next week.
00:02:03Two episodes.
00:02:04Aaron Schatz is coming on Monday, founder of the now debunked, defunct, I always screw
00:02:10that up.
00:02:11Something is debunked if it's a theory, it's defunct if it's no longer in existence.
00:02:13Anyway, Football Outsiders, now FTN Fantasies, Aaron Schatz coming in with the almanac by
00:02:19the FTN almanac.
00:02:20You'll hear me say that a lot next week.
00:02:22And I think we might have Doug Kide back at the end of next week as well.
00:02:25If not, we'll do a mailbag segment.
00:02:27So without further ado, the best of then we are moving on and moving upward.
00:02:31Have you have you talked to Reverend Slate lately?
00:02:33Can you give us an update more either?
00:02:35Either you guys like what he's been up to in his new role, because it sounds perfect
00:02:38for him is what you just described.
00:02:40Yeah, I mean, that was my when I went up there for most of the time I was there.
00:02:44I was just in the office with Gerard and Slate.
00:02:48Honestly, like it was it was a little bit about what they're doing, but I mean, we all
00:02:51that we've known each other since, you know, my rookie year in 2010.
00:02:54So a lot of it was just like catching up and talking, talking trash.
00:02:59And I think the unique thing is for both of those guys is you were in something for so
00:03:04long and now they're both in brand new roles.
00:03:07So I think both of them are like, man, I'm handling a lot of things that have nothing
00:03:12to do with football.
00:03:13And that's every coach I've ever talked to when they go from being an assistant to a
00:03:17head coach or for Slate being a player to now being, you know, coach slash everything
00:03:24else. And in between, it's the how many things we deal with that don't necessarily on
00:03:30paper help us go win a football game, but it helps in the grand scheme of things.
00:03:35Like we were talking, it was like we're like we're talking about child care.
00:03:39We're talking about the weight room and this thing and that thing is like we haven't
00:03:44even gotten to the three technique, the why we like the why we see with Stan.
00:03:49So the new kickoff, we haven't done ball.
00:03:52So that was that to me.
00:03:54It was was fun getting to talk to them about that because I've heard, you know, being
00:03:58back at Rutgers in college.
00:04:00And I remember when Chris Ash took over as a head coach and he was like, I put out fires
00:04:04all day like I don't get to watch ball to the end of the day.
00:04:08So I think that has been pretty unique for both of them being into that.
00:04:11So it's fun being able to be there.
00:04:13And I think for me now being in media, same thing with James is you learn and see so many
00:04:19things from like you step back and you can just watch and enjoy the game of football.
00:04:23So I get to talk to them about conversations I have with like my coworkers, like Jason
00:04:28Garrett to me has been a guy that has I've learned a ton from because the organization
00:04:33he was in was the Dallas Cowboys.
00:04:35Everything, all eyes on you, decision making, all the things that he would look at and review.
00:04:41So whenever I get a chance to sit down with Gerard, I just like to pass on that knowledge
00:04:45and tell him the different things I've learned.
00:04:46So I always try to do that, whether it's in person or we're catching up on the phone or
00:04:51anything like that.
00:04:52But he never he doesn't come to me to help be the head coach of the Patriots.
00:04:56I don't have those answers.
00:04:57Not not to buffer on your guy, but have you shared any clapping techniques that Jason
00:05:04had on to anyone else?
00:05:05You get a lot of love on Twitter spaces when you were playing for just this constant on
00:05:09the sidelines.
00:05:10You aware of that?
00:05:11It was always this.
00:05:12Down 30, this.
00:05:13Up 30, or this.
00:05:14You gotta keep it the same, man.
00:05:15One real quick thing, because you mentioned putting out fires, and this isn't a fire,
00:05:25but it's not to make light of a rookie being anything more than a rookie.
00:05:29But when you talk about things off the field that don't talk to winning that he might have
00:05:32to handle.
00:05:34Jayvon Baker's Zoom.
00:05:35I don't know how much either of you saw that.
00:05:37Making people stand up out of wheelchairs.
00:05:38The first thought that hit my head was Bill would have traded his ass for a future fit
00:05:43as soon as the Zoom was over.
00:05:45Is that something that you're talking about?
00:05:47And this goes to either of you, where it's like, I have to deal with this in a leadership
00:05:50position.
00:05:51You guys have been around other head coaches, even if it's not football.
00:05:53And if so, what was your reaction to hearing that?
00:05:55If I talked about it with Judon on my podcast, that's a guy you got to take under your wing
00:06:01100%.
00:06:03I like the confidence though.
00:06:04He's going to come in motivated, like he said, he wants to bring the hard work, the winning
00:06:08mentality back in there.
00:06:09So I think he has the right mindset.
00:06:10I think it was more about where he got drafted.
00:06:13He thought he should have got drafted higher than what he is.
00:06:16And now that's like the new thing with the kids.
00:06:18They jump on Instagram Live as soon as something happens, and they share their thoughts and
00:06:23feelings versus in the past, you wait till the media calls you.
00:06:27You talk about it.
00:06:28You can do it all by yourself.
00:06:29Yeah, he was still fresh, asking for drink, where the drinks at and all that.
00:06:33So he didn't get portrayed in the greatest light.
00:06:36But like I said, you see the videos of him working out against some of the top corners
00:06:40from the draft and all that.
00:06:41So he's putting in the work.
00:06:43It's all about when he shows up into the building, I don't think it'd be necessarily a big deal.
00:06:47I'm sure Mayo, I'm sure Mayo have some cooked up for him the day he steps into the building
00:06:51for the team meeting.
00:06:52I'm sure they'll get a big kick out of that, especially if he not winning some raps early.
00:07:00I thought it was hilarious.
00:07:01That first day, like MF and Liquor.
00:07:02It wasn't just where the drinks at, it was where the MF and Liquor at one o'clock on
00:07:06a Saturday.
00:07:07And you need, like they need that.
00:07:10You need, I always tell people, James and myself, Slate, we were all a certain way.
00:07:16But the truth is you can't have a team full of-
00:07:19Why you ain't say me?
00:07:20Yeah, what's up?
00:07:21I'm just showing up at my house.
00:07:22All day.
00:07:23Just walking around, just walking around his big crib.
00:07:24I like this, man.
00:07:25What's up, James?
00:07:26What's happening?
00:07:27Yo, we're doing a podcast, bro.
00:07:28All right, podcast.
00:07:29Come on in.
00:07:30Get what Jay say about Jayvon Baker's comments the other day.
00:07:31Oh, I love it, man.
00:07:32You talk about superior confidence right there, and they're going to have to tamper him down.
00:07:33Who knows, though?
00:07:34Mayo's in office now.
00:07:35They're always out the window.
00:07:36Let him talk his trash.
00:07:37Well, I text Slate.
00:07:38I text Slate right away.
00:07:39I'm like, yo, what's up?

00:36:20But you want the predictions?
00:36:22I'm giving you a prediction.
00:36:23That's a prediction.
00:36:24There you go.
00:36:25Okay, as far as big changes, I can see the vision for a change to offensive coordinator,
00:36:29because if you're a head coach who's presided over a losing team and you're going into Year
00:36:343, that's the make or break year.
00:36:36And if you're gonna make a change, you need a scapegoat.
00:36:39And we saw this in Chicago.
00:36:40Matt Iberflues fires his offensive coordinator, Luke Goetze, who goes elsewhere and gets a
00:36:44job.
00:36:45And they make a change.
00:36:46And then they draft, obviously, Caleb Williams.
00:36:47And they're going on.
00:36:48underwhelmed this year. It's Matt Eberflus, who's next. So if Gerard Mayo is feeling any kind of heat,
00:36:52which is hard to imagine right now, as we're in, as I don't know if you've heard, the honeymoon
00:36:56period. Really? Softballs, as you said, we're throwing them softballs. Yes, 4-13 to, you know,
00:37:046-11. We'll change that pretty quickly. And that could be what's ahead of them. I, however, think
00:37:10AVP is going to stay. The more I've learned about him, the more I believe a little bit,
00:37:14not necessarily he'll ever be a top 10 offensive coordinator here. But he's the right guy for where
00:37:19they are now. And if you're going to make another leap, I think that development piece is key.
00:37:24Continuity. And I think he's more flexible schematically than we're giving him credit for.
00:37:28And it's also a style that's going to suit, not just Drake May, but Javon Baker, Jalen Polk,
00:37:33and the way they want to play offense. Can we just stop scheduling games, two games,
00:37:40against the same opponent in a three-week stretch? I know it's my job. Like you said,
00:37:43I try to be professional in these press conferences. I think largely I succeed.
00:37:48I don't, I'm so glad I have six months to think about this. What are we going to ask Gerrard
00:37:53and players about the bills and tell me about their defense, what the test is in this matchup?
00:37:58If the game doesn't matter to the bills, you just saw them less than two weeks ago,
00:38:01and now you're going to go play them again, a team that you know so well and study. Like fans,
00:38:05no way can you get that excited about seeing the same opponent that, again, was two weeks earlier
00:38:11playing you in their own place, and then they come to visit.
00:38:14Can we at least spread this out to four weeks, NFL, if we're going to accommodate requests for
00:38:18travel and timing and bye weeks? And not fulfill all of them, by the way. The Patriots wanted to
00:38:22stay out West for the Niners and Cardinals game, and not because you, Bob Sosey, called them a
00:38:26million times. The league offices told me this. But can we just spread this out a little bit?
00:38:33Andrew, I said the same thing earlier today.
00:38:35Really?
00:38:36Someone, yeah, absolutely. And I don't want to be redundant here.
00:38:39Now, from a selfish standpoint, it does make the job of preparing one spotter charts. I know that's
00:38:44a great concern to the fan base and to you writers on the beat. It does make that part of the job,
00:38:50for me, easier. It's just a matter of updating a few numbers. But nonetheless, I hate it.
00:38:55We've been in this situation before, preparing for the Patriots and the Jets
00:38:58twice in a three-week span, I think. To have the schedule fall the way it does, too, I hate the
00:39:05fact that, okay, they play the Jets twice in the first half of the season. You don't see them again
00:39:09as a division. You don't see the Bills, like last year, until the end of the season. Now you get
00:39:15them twice in three weeks. I hate that part of it. My wildcard thought does relate to the Bills as
00:39:20well. What happens if Buffalo doesn't fare well, as well as expectations going into the season
00:39:29and accompanying them? Have everybody believing Sean Burnett comes in to Foxborough week 18,
00:39:37game 17. There's a former Patriots head coach who's out in the media. Hey, I'm just saying.
00:39:48No, say the whole team.
00:39:56I think the wildcard thought is, what if the Bills, in the minds of Bills fans,
00:40:00in the minds of Bills owner Terry Pegula, are underachieving by that stage of the season and
00:40:05aren't set up to have a successful playoff run? I don't think this is going to happen,
00:40:12but wind up missing the playoffs. This team has gone through some substantial changes.
00:40:18Going into that stretch, twice with the Patriots in three weeks, what's it going to be like for
00:40:26McDermott and the Bills at this stage for him if they're not seemingly poised to make a deep run
00:40:33in the postseason and finally win that Super Bowl for Buffalo? Oh my God. I'm ashamed of my wildcard
00:40:41thought. I thought I was just fair, complaining about games. You are suggesting that the Jets,
00:40:48in a snowy regular season finale, knock out the Bill Belichick era. And then the Patriots,
00:40:53a year later, possibly back in Foxborough, in a game that is likely to have inclement weather or
00:40:57at least freezing temperatures, play the Bills and then usher in the Bill Belichick era in Buffalo.
00:41:03The Buffalo Bill Belichicks is what you just proposed. This is the spiciest thing that has
00:41:07been said of this podcast. Spicy Bob has to be here to stay. I want to get him to be the fifth
00:41:12or sixth co-host on Rich Sirleaf's new show. Move over Michael Hurley and Mike Giardi and
00:41:17everybody. Definitely move over Mike Giardi. But that was outstanding. And I had not thought of
00:41:22that before. And I'm ashamed that I didn't, but I'm so glad you brought it to my attention.
00:41:28It's outrageous. Don't back away now. I've got to reel this back in now.
00:41:35The genie's long gone. I felt this way last year, and I don't know if I said this publicly,
00:41:41but I think people look at the Cowboys as a potential destination still for Bill. Because
00:41:47I think Bill is still a great coach in that kind of team. And I've thought this since last year,
00:41:53and I know I'm not alone. If you're Terry Pagula, you watch the Patriots against the Bills,
00:42:00the way you reference the Patriots win against Buffalo. And we'll even go back to that wind and
00:42:05snow game in late December for Matt Jones' rookie season. And you're in the division,
00:42:14butted your head against his teams for years and lost, and finally thought you got over the hump,
00:42:18but you can't win that Super Bowl. Maybe the McDermott era is winding toward an end. I think
00:42:26he's a good coach. I think he's done a tremendous job there. But the expectations are what they are
00:42:31in Buffalo because of the success that he's established. But if the Bills were to fall
00:42:35short of that bar this season, then I think the wild scenarios could be in play by week 18 of this
00:42:44season. And maybe they're not so wild. Maybe they are. It's funny you mention Gonzalez, because we
00:42:49talked to him yesterday. I'm recording here Wednesday morning. It's gray. It's rainy. It's
00:42:53somehow May in New England. It was the first time he spoke to us since last year, since before the
00:43:00injury. And he spoke as if he thought Bill was still the head coach because he wouldn't give
00:43:05details on anything injury-related, which is fine. We know to keep it general. Do you think you'll
00:43:10practice in OTAs? I'm not looking for a guarantee. Are you cleared yet? How's the shoulder? He said
00:43:14he was healthy. But I looked up not only just his age. He's only two months older than Drake May.
00:43:20Let's say May hits. Gonzalez hits. Far more. You've got three cornerstones under 25 right there.
00:43:25Throw in Polk or Jayvon Baker if you're feeling optimistic. If not, here's my second point.
00:43:31He played against Polk in college. And Polk went for three catches in 91 yards. And I asked him
00:43:35about that play. It was a post-route against cover four. First of all, he made clear it was not his
00:43:39fault. But just to say that the guys that they brought in, yes, we don't know about Jaylon Polk,
00:43:43have had success against NFL defenses. That Oregon defense had a lot of NFL defenders on it,
00:43:49even though we haven't seen them at this level. And so he's got a lot of respect for Polk.
00:43:53The guy goes back to Texas and just a little tidbits here and there. Because it was good
00:43:57to hear from Christian Gonzalez, even if he didn't really want to talk to us too much.
00:44:00So he did say he was, quote, a little sick that the rookies this year won't have to wear numbers
00:44:04in the 50s and 60s. I'm not sick. I'm very glad for that. It's time to move on from all the old
00:44:11ways. I mean, even the good and bad, it's just time to start new and fresh and something different,
00:44:18a different look, a different vibe. Like I said, not expecting them to go out and win
00:44:22five, six Super Bowls, but it's time to move on from the old. And I think Brady's roast was
00:44:28the opposite, the exact ending we needed to everything old with the Patriots. They clowned
00:44:33each other and got it all out the way. And now we can move on to something new.
00:44:37Yeah. I have to keep focused. I would love to talk Brady bro. My first tweet was like,
00:44:45I can't quote any of this. Not that I felt obligated to, but you're participating in it.
00:44:48And then of course I said a couple of quotes out there. So those were the highlights to me
00:44:52or thoughts or whatever. Okay. Really quickly. You have four best moves. I have four best moves.
00:44:57You have the Patriots, three worst moves to the off season. I expect there to be some overlap.
00:45:01I've already hinted that Drake May will come up in this conversation. So for the first,
00:45:06the best move, your top out of these four that they made this entire off season really quickly
00:45:11was what quarterback getting Drake May. That's my number one getting Drake made because everything
00:45:16revolves around the quarterback. If the quarterback's not right, none of it, none of it's
00:45:19right. None of it's going to matter. It's a, they've made sure that it's a QB league and everything.
00:45:24Success is all determined about that QB. They went and got them a quarterback. They got their guy,
00:45:29you know, it wasn't the guy I wanted initially, but it's all good, but they got their guy and
00:45:33they got their quarterback and they started building around them. So getting Drake May
00:45:37was my number one off season move that I, you know, number one on my list for the best
00:45:41offense off season moves. So, and another thing that will not put any points on the board,
00:45:46but because it's May and these are the things that we talk about, what, what's your impression
00:45:50been of May when he's met the media here so far, a couple of interviews here and there.
00:45:55He sounds like, he sounds like he's nervous. First of all, it sounds like he's real nervous
00:45:59talking real fast. I mean, he is a country kid, so he's going to, he's going to kind of talk fast
00:46:03like that real excited, but I think he's genuinely like enthusiastic to be a Patriots quarterback.
00:46:10I mean, the whole idea of, is he happy to be here? Does he want to be in the North,
00:46:14all this other stuff? I think the dude's real excited about being an NFL quarterback
00:46:19and he's happy to be, you know, to be a Patriot. I'm pretty sure they're embracing it. They were
00:46:24impressed by having the one-on-one meetings with him and interviews, whatever. So, I mean,
00:46:29I think people up in new England are going to have to adjust to him, but to me, he sounds like every
00:46:36other player in the South when they do interviews, but it's, it's, it's going to be a, it's going to
00:46:41be an adjustment, but I think he's, I think he's more, how can I say, he's more excited than what
00:46:47we got from, from Mac Jones. He's showing you a little more. He seems like a young kid that's
00:46:51just happy to play ball. But one thing I can take from the things he said is he's a baller.
00:46:57He's a gym rat. He likes to play football. Football's all that matters to him. Maybe
00:47:02said the whole thing with his brothers and being in a house full of athletes, his pops,
00:47:06where competition and playing ball is all that really matters and everything else gets put to
00:47:10the side. And I genuinely, genuinely believe that's going to accelerate his growth and his
00:47:16talent in the league because he could tell he's really about hard work and getting better. So
00:47:21hopefully that doesn't change about him, but I think, I think the fans are going to grow to
00:47:25like Drake May. Yeah. They haven't already. You know, it's funny you mentioned the family
00:47:29because that's something that I came close to dismissing in the whole process, right?
00:47:34Like if you're, if you're going to what the house was like when this kid brought up as a reason to
00:47:38believe in him as a prospect, I'm like, you just skipped over, I feel like a hundred things that
00:47:42matter a little bit more. The way I saw him interact, obviously all the success of his
00:47:48brother said he's had the only way to survive in that kind of family is to obviously compete
00:47:53and win and hold your own. And what that has led to from what I've seen in these media appearances
00:47:57is just a real sense of self and sense of comfort in your own skin. Something certainly I didn't
00:48:03feel at 21 or know what I wanted to do and how I was going to do it and whether I even could
00:48:08this kid might bust out, but he at least will go into that locker room with the kind of security
00:48:12that not only just attracts people to you in any line of work or any line of place, but especially
00:48:16for leaders and in a room of guys who grew up similarly alphas or people having to fight for
00:48:22their own playing time on a team or within a family. And so I think those things work in his
00:48:25favor where it is authentic, it's genuine. But it also gets me thinking of like, you know how
00:48:31those families, especially like if you own a beach house or if you rented a beach house,
00:48:34you have those signs that hang that are like, live, laugh, love. What do you think was on the
00:48:39main family household? It's like, compete, kick some ass, if you lose, take a lap. Like, I'd like
00:48:46to say something deeper than that, but what am I missing?
00:48:49Yeah. I mean, I agree with you with your father being a college quarterback or whatever. I think
00:48:54he played in the Canadian league or something like that, but you got your pops there, you got
00:48:58your older brothers and you can tell they're ultra competitive. But I mean, the one thing I will say
00:49:04about him, I would, you know, when that comparison to what you had with Mack Jones, back when things
00:49:10got tight for Jones, you see him on the sidelines looking like he didn't know how to handle himself
00:49:14mentally, what to do next, man, how do I get out of this? And you can already tell the minute that
00:49:21May feels that way, he can see his brothers in the back. Like, dude, if you don't get it together,
00:49:25I'm going to come down there and get you together. Like you can already tell he's not going to dwell
00:49:30on a negative play too long or a negative quarter or a bad game. And you can see he's going to want
00:49:36to bounce back, get everybody involved. We're still in this. We're good. You know, you can
00:49:41kind of see he has that mentality. And I think that does come from playing with, you know,
00:49:46growing up with a brother who won a national championship on a baseball field, basketball
00:49:51pops, being a quarterback, just being in that household. He's not going to dwell on down moments
00:49:56too long. And we, we have seen here in the past that you need a quarterback that can handle those
00:50:01moments playing in, in New England area. So I think that's going to be a big, you know, feather
00:50:06in the cap for Drake May going forward. Yeah, absolutely. All right. Let's let's pivot the worst
00:50:12out of your three moves and Patriots made this off season was what this is weird. I might be
00:50:16the only one here not addressing the running back situation. I didn't think, I didn't think they,
00:50:23I wanted to see them get a younger running back in the draft. I think they need a horse and not
00:50:30in the old school guy, get 35 carries kind of way, but I do think they need to replace what you lost
00:50:36from Zeke Elliott, maybe a little more than that because Stevens is coming off an injury.
00:50:41He's getting a little older. I think they could have went and got a younger, a young running back
00:50:46a burner kind of, and I'm going to say a third down guy, but to kind of do it all running back,
00:50:50but somebody with some burst. And I think the way you protect the young quarterback,
00:50:55if you're going to play him early on, I hope they do, but I think you run the football.
00:50:59I think you find a way to not put the, put your young quarterback, putting me in a position.
00:51:04We've thrown it 45 times by running the football. Now they might address it as time goes on and
00:51:10might believe in the guys they already have there, but I was really looking for them to
00:51:14address the running back situation. And I would say get a pro bowler, but get a really good
00:51:18running back to help help out your young quarterback. So are you out on Antonio Gibson?
00:51:23No, I think he'd be a good third down back for them. I think it's something they've been missing.
00:51:27And I think that's what's with, uh, Mack Jones had his rookie year,
00:51:31the running back, the production in Mack Jones' first year was crazy. I think they had like
00:51:362,500 total yards or something like that. Third down back, I think it was a Bolden had like 500
00:51:41yards of offense that year as a third down guy. And just having a guy to dump the ball off to,
00:51:47if you want to run those screen plays on third, then you have a guy who can legit do it on an
00:51:52elite level. But I think having a third down guy will help you young quarterback out.
00:51:56But I just wanted another guy in the backfield to go along with Stevenson
00:52:00in case he starts to wear down as time goes on.
00:52:04That did not make my list. So I'm glad we're talking about it. And I, you know, it's interesting
00:52:09too, right? Because Stevenson's in a contract year and we have all of these extensions coming
00:52:13up. Barmore gets a big bag, you know, Dugger re-signs on when he re-signs and you're looking
00:52:18around and going, okay, who's next? And Stevenson's eligible, right? All those 2021 draft picks.
00:52:24I don't think it's good business to re-sign running backs to big money, particularly in
00:52:27second contracts. You have to be an outlier in a way that as good as I think Stevenson is,
00:52:31just hasn't proven to be that way. Not to mention the workload, the Patriots have voiced it upon
00:52:36his shoulders these last two seasons, which will accelerate a decline, which might be years away,
00:52:40but you just don't know until it happens. And so I, like you, I'm in on Antonio Gibson and
00:52:45wrote up a scouting report on him for the Herald a couple of months ago. Soon after he signed,
00:52:50branded by someone within the league who was like, okay, this makes sense. It's a little
00:52:55wordy, trim this, but just really underscore the fumbling part because that's where everything
00:53:00breaks. If you can't trust the guy to hold onto the ball, he's not going to see the field.
00:53:04And I can talk about how he's a rare power pass catching back, right? You can trust him
00:53:09for being a tackle. He's an excellent pass protector according to PFF or any stats you
00:53:13want to find. He's a good one cut zone running back. There's going to be a zone running scheme,
00:53:18but if he busts, then it's Stevenson and Kevin Harris. And so I I'm, I'm with you.
00:53:25I think it would have made my list. Have we gone to five or six, but it's a fair point because,
00:53:30you know, whether it's injuries or the bumbling issues, this is something that could crop up a
00:53:33lot faster than any people anticipate. Yeah. And I think it's going to be important. I mean,
00:53:37look at the, what the, the coaching staff, the guys they brought in from Cleveland,
00:53:41we all seen what the Browns have been doing the last few years. They run the football.
00:53:45They, I mean, that's, that's what they do. They run the football and the protected all 10
00:53:49quarterbacks they use last two years. And, but they still wouldn't win 11 games or something
00:53:53like that last year, but they ran the football. They kept bringing in veteran running backs and
00:53:58it kind of protected Flacco through last season and the other three quarterbacks that played.
00:54:03So I expected them coming in to be more of a run heavy offense than what we've seen in the past,
00:54:08especially with a young quarterback and young receivers. You want to run to your strings.
00:54:12Okay. We can run the football. We got decent tight ends. Okay. We can, we will play that way
00:54:16and play off play action through that. But I was expecting them put it like this to go out and get
00:54:21one of those young running backs, especially through the draft when all the good running
00:54:25backs started fading later and later into the draft. I'm like, wait a minute. You can get an
00:54:30all American here late, but they decided to go with the receivers and show up their offensive
00:54:35line, which I don't have no issues with that. But I was still waiting and looking for them to
00:54:39somehow some way land a running back. Now some kids can pop in training camps and got to bring
00:54:44in, but I was expecting them to get a running back out of this. And that, that was my biggest
00:54:48disappointment with this Patriots team in this off season. Okay. Your second favorite move.
00:54:52The second best thing the Patriots did this off season was what a window, bringing the window
00:54:57back offensive line. We saw the importance of the offensive line or lack thereof, you know,
00:55:02last year or so. So I think retaining him, keeping him in the building and good for him for wanting
00:55:08to stay and go for them for bringing them back and realizing how important he is. And I'm glad
00:55:13they got that done and got him signed. So I would say bringing a window back is my second, second,
00:55:18biggest off season move for them. I think this is obvious. Um, and I agree completely. I mean,
00:55:24you could make an argument. This is number one, just if you're against the idea that a quarterback,
00:55:28you know, uh, at the top of the draft guarantees anything, which obviously it doesn't, but you
00:55:32know, at some point you have to take the swing. They did because of when it was their best player
00:55:35in offense last year, he plays a premium position now that he's a tackle and it's not, you know,
00:55:41a matter of left versus right anymore. Cause the guys on the right side are getting paid just as
00:55:44much because the pressure in your face, as it turns out, is just as bad as pressure. It might
00:55:52not result in a strip sack as often, but it's going to affect the play and it's pretty valuable.
00:55:55So on whether he's at right tackle or right guard based on his last comments, doesn't seem,
00:56:00you know, particularly key in the idea of going to let tackle, uh, which I know we'll get to a
00:56:04little bit later. You just have to keep your best players. Like he's, he's professional. He's in his
00:56:09prime. He plays a premium position. This was simple. And just imagine for a second, because
00:56:13again, the left tackle situation is vastly different. Yeah. Had on when he walked and
00:56:18they balked at an extra couple million and he goes to someone like the giant. So I know who had
00:56:22interest. What are we saying now? Like you can't play Drake. You're not going to run the ball.
00:56:28You don't have any tax. You don't have anything. Yeah. Yeah. It's now you're looking at it as a
00:56:32tank here. You're looking at your situation where you could be this year's Carolina Panthers,
00:56:36just go from bad to worse. You know, you, you don't want that not around here.
00:56:41Anyway. I mean, folks would end up losing their jobs with the outcry after that, but
00:56:45yeah, that one move, I think I wouldn't say gave them all hope, but it, I think once he was
00:56:51re-signed, it kind of opened the door for them to re-sign other guys in the building and guys
00:56:55wanting to stay, stick around. And I think that was a vibe that I don't know if the fans are
00:56:59feeling, but how many of these guys want to stay after Belichick left after last season,
00:57:04any of these guys going to re-sign here and then sure enough, they, they re-sign him and guys start
00:57:09sticking around. But I think he was, he's important to this offense. I think, like you said,
00:57:13probably the most important guy, this offense right now until they figure out on that left side,
00:57:17but I think keeping him around was huge. It allows you to throw the football,
00:57:22allows you to run the football. And it's, it sends a message to your team that we'll,
00:57:27we will take care of our own. If you're good here, you produce here, we're going to pay,
00:57:32you're going to stick around and not really throwing a shot at the old regime, but that
00:57:36never really was a guarantee. So I think signing him was a big sign to everybody on many different
00:57:42levels. And again, just, just to get ahead of what I think some people would counter,
00:57:46what does it matter that you're sending this message to the locker room? If you're good,
00:57:49we'll keep you like, but you might just want to go get it back elsewhere. That's great.
00:57:52Um, the, the re-signings of internal free agents is so much higher in terms of the success rate,
00:57:59because you know what you have in the player. There's no projection of how is Johnny Smith
00:58:03going to fit into this offense more. Can we get Nelson Aguilar, the ball downfield,
00:58:07or what's it going to be like for Jalen Mills? If he just doesn't want to play corner anymore,
00:58:11then we have to move him to safety. And this is to not to knock any of those guys personally,
00:58:15but it used to be in free agency. You remember these guys would take visits and they would go
00:58:20see multiple teams and then they would weigh their contract offers. And then they would sign.
00:58:25They talk behind closed doors, agents and GMs, whoever at the combine, and then they swap
00:58:30contract offers in the days leading up to the legal tampering period that opens and the deals
00:58:35are done. So you don't have time to get familiar to erase some of that uncertainty. And if you know,
00:58:40you feel good about a guy, Ty goes to the guy you already have. Now there's a little more
00:58:44complicated than that, but I think it speaks to a more sound strategy for players. Again,
00:58:49as I've said, play premium positions. I did not name my worst move of the Patriots off season,
00:58:54but I hinted at it just there. They still surround somehow after last season in 2022,
00:59:01when there was a black hole and right tackle have an established proven starter
00:59:05on the left side. And this is crazy to me. Did this make your list?
00:59:08Yep. It left tackle. I mean, I had it. It wasn't my second one, but yeah, it was his third. I had
00:59:17left tackle on there. They still didn't address it. I mean, they, they, they took the kid from
00:59:21Penn state. Can he play left tackle out of time? We'll tell, I don't know, but like you said,
00:59:27they still didn't get an established left tackle. I think that's, that's the move that would have
00:59:32kept a lot of people from giving this team an a in the off season, a plus, if they would have went
00:59:37out and landed a legit left tackle, it changes the way we look at how they're going to handle May,
00:59:44how they're going to run the football, what kind of offense they're going to be.
00:59:47All these things change when you have a stable left tackle on the field, on the team, whatever,
00:59:52but they didn't really address it directly. I don't know if they're going to move guys over
00:59:56or not, but now it's, it opens the door for guys like you to write more articles and do more
01:00:02homework and training camp about how this guy looks at left tackle. They played this guy.
01:00:06They rotated this guy in this guy's going to play the second preseason game. You're going
01:00:11in a week one, so-and-so was named the starter at left tackle and you're playing that game all
01:00:16over again. So I really wish they would address that and solidify that left tackles, but maybe
01:00:22they tried and this is what they ended up with. But I would have loved to see more effort with
01:00:27that left tackle position. And I think a name, you know, maybe not this week because Chris
01:00:32price, the Boston globe front of the podcast did an excellent job detailing the malaria case that
01:00:38Calvin Anderson dealt with. And that was a guy before he got sick again, three days before
01:00:42training camp, go read Chris's story, 105 degree fever. I don't know how high you've gotten in
01:00:47the fever department. I think I topped out at like one Oh two something as a kid. Yeah.
01:00:52One Oh five is near death.
