00:00I am joined by Robert Griffin, the third James White field.
00:11Yes.
00:12Mina Kimes.
00:13All right.
00:14So first play, we're going to look at second and two, one of the Patriots first offensive
00:17plays.
00:18Going on everyone, my hair, I was muted.
00:23Mike Taylor, Kyle's here for CLNS media, fresh, literally fresh off the practice field for
00:28day nine.
00:29No Patriots training camp, no, no standups today, a little technical difficulties here
00:34on the channel, but that's why we're here early.
00:36Again, we just got back day 19.
00:39We are powered by game time and prize picks.
00:42We'll hear from them a little bit more in a second, but we're today's practice.
00:47Here's the quick lowdown was the longest practice they've had all camp.
00:51They went for just almost two and a half hours, but it was a lighter one.
00:55They didn't have pads.
00:56They just had shells on nothing underneath.
00:58So although it was long, there wasn't a ton to take away.
01:01There's a couple, a couple of quick hitters that we're going to get to.
01:05And that's why we're here.
01:06So let's start with, I think we'll go with the quarterbacks because we heard from Alex
01:12Van Pelt before practice and he gave a little bit more insight, I guess, as to, you know,
01:18why they haven't given Drake May as much ones reps and sort of what their plan is.
01:23And basically my big takeaway was, was what he said about Drake May's chances to start
01:28week one.
01:29And that was that, yeah, he has a chance, but ultimately, first of all, Jacoby Brissett
01:34is QB one.
01:36But second of all, he mentioned that, you know, there's basically a right way to, to
01:41handle a rookie quarterback.
01:43And I don't know if I have that.
01:44I want to make sure I have that quote exactly because it was sort of telling to me that
01:49even though Drake is, um, I believe where he said, um, so I just looked it up, I actually
01:57tweeted it.
01:58It was, he was talking about the chances of Drake May playing week one.
02:01And he said, coach Mayo said it's an open competition.
02:04I'm sure there's a chance, but I think as you go in, there's still a process of how
02:08you bring a rookie quarterback along.
02:10So that tells me that even though Drake's coming along, they still want to use this
02:14process and this plan that they have in place and they don't want to, you know, speed it
02:17up a little bit.
02:19Um, so that was my big takeaway from van Pelt.
02:21And I will just add that Drake may did take more reps with the ones today.
02:25Um, he threw the ball with the ones today.
02:28It was more of in a game prep situation.
02:30They were working off cards as a defense, um, likely from Washington's defense to give
02:34them a little sense of, you know, how they're going to go into a game week and prep that
02:39way.
02:40Uh, but he also took some reps under center from David Andrews, which I thought was noteworthy
02:43as well.
02:44So with the first offensive line, which we'll get to that first offensive line in a minute,
02:49but let's start with the quarterbacks.
02:50What'd you see from May today?
02:51What do you think of this next step?
02:52Yesterday?
02:53He took reps with the ones today.
02:54He froze with the ones.
02:55So a little bit there.
02:57It's slow, but you're starting to see those steps in development take place, the development
03:01plan take place.
03:02Yeah.
03:03So I'll start with, uh, the pressers at the beginning of practice, we spoke to Alex van
03:06Pelt.
03:07We also spoke to TC McCartney.
03:08Yeah.
03:09My biggest takeaways from those availabilities is one Alex van Pelt reiterated, which Rod
03:13Mayo said yesterday, which is Drake may is a hundred percent ready to lead a huddle.
03:17You said he can get the play calls out.
03:19He can make the cans and make all the adjustments.
03:21We saw that once against the Eagles last week, where he went from under center, then went
03:25into the shotgun and they wound up going with the play action pass, wound up checking down
03:29to Jalen Polk due to guys looked really cool, but it seemed like the biggest thing keeping
03:34Drake may off the field is the fact that I don't think he's seen is enough defenses for
03:40them to be comfortable putting him out there.
03:42Now personally, that was something that I kind of downplayed because we actually talked
03:46about it on the drive to practice today that when it comes to coverages and shells, obviously
03:51defenses can throw so much at you where, you know, like big banjo, like we saw last week
03:54where they'll start in too high and there's any number of things they can do, whether
03:58it's dropping the single high or playing a two high shell or split safety shell that
04:03is half one thing, half another, and just kind of try to throw you off.
04:06I think that Drake may, it seems like he plays an attack space and leverage more than he's
04:11saying, okay, they're in cover three.
04:13I'm going X, Y, Z.
04:14Although of course there's always a progression, but the big thing was going to be picking
04:18up the blitz.
04:19And a lot of that is on the offensive line at David Andrews, where they call the protection
04:23and they make sure that they've got everybody blocked up.
04:25And if there is a free rusher, then Drake may has to know, okay, I'm either throwing
04:29hot because this guy's unblocked, you know, all the different permutations that can happen
04:33when defenses throw certain pressure looks at you, Alex, Dan Pelt ended up actually touching
04:39on those things.
04:40And there's pressure looks.
04:41He hasn't seen there's defenses he hasn't seen.
04:43And he mentioned wanting Drake may to have the answers.
04:46TC McCartney reiterated this.
04:47He said, there's a bunch of different looks he's going to get.
04:50We want to make sure that he has all the different answers to all the looks he's going to get.
04:54So I'm guessing that from what it sounds like they're open to Drake may starting at some
04:58point, but I think maybe it is like, all right, let's give him a month because we're going
05:03to play all these really good defenses.
05:05Maybe he can see, you know, Lou Anna Ramos defense, Mike McDonald, how Jacobi responds
05:10to these defenses on the field.
05:12Because obviously he kept reiterating Jacobi has been in this system.
05:15He has experience in the NFL.
05:16He has the answers to all these different pressure looks.
05:19And that's one thing.
05:20If you look at the film, when Jacobi was with Cleveland, his ability to go through his reads
05:24efficiently, make the right choices and quick game where it's especially hard because everything
05:28is so split second.
05:30And when things get thrown off, some young quarterbacks can get nervous and they can
05:32make the wrong decisions.
05:35Maybe they just want to have enough tape where it shows Jacobi trying to solve all these
05:38problems with their supporting cast and with everyone around them.
05:42And then Drake may can learn from what Jacobi does before he tries and applies it on the
05:47field.
05:48Now I even asked TC about Gerard Mayo's quote, where he said the best way to learn football
05:52is to play football.
05:53And he said, I agree, but you also want to put your quarterback in the best position
05:57to succeed.
05:58So while I have been of the mindset that I think Drake could play week one from an outsider's
06:03perspective, knowing there's a ton that I don't know, at the same time, I have been
06:07adamant that I don't think they should rush him out there or need to necessarily rush
06:10him out there.
06:11So for them, it seems like that last step is for Drake to understand it's you're not
06:15just playing the Pats defense, but it's not everything you're going to see.
06:21And you're going to play these defenses where you get a lot of experience and you're going
06:24to get more examples of stuff you're going to see from other opponents.
06:27Now that you know what those answers are, can you repeat them back?
06:31Do you know what they are?
06:32If we put it up in the VR simulator and all these things.
06:36So it sounds like that's the last roadblock, which as a Patriots fan, I think that's encouraging
06:40because Drake is a smart guy.
06:42So you're hoping he can see these things and be able to learn from them and potentially
06:46start sooner than October or something like that.
06:49But once again, we have more clarity on what it is exactly that's keeping Drake May from
06:53being the starter other than Jacoby being the guy that they're most comfortable with,
06:57obviously.
06:58Yeah, for sure.
06:59I think it makes a ton of sense to like, yes, you want to put this guy out there.
07:03I'm basically just reiterating kind of what you just said, but you want to put this guy
07:06out there.
07:07You want to see him play.
07:08You want to see him start.
07:09He looks awesome.
07:10But taking a little bit, I guess, of a step back where like, OK, he had a good game the
07:15other night and I'm not taking anything away from Drake May, but he had a good game.
07:18It was against the Eagles twos.
07:19They made it nice and easy for him.
07:22Nice and easy may be strong, but they made him comfortable.
07:24They ran kind of things he ran in college.
07:26They they they set it up for Drake May to succeed, I would say, and I think that's what
07:30anyone wants to do.
07:31And Van Pelt even said that today where he talks to these quarterbacks before games.
07:35They're involved in the game plan.
07:36He tells them there.
07:38He asks them what what plays they're comfortable with and those are the plays they're going
07:41to call.
07:42I love that quote.
07:43There are some coaches who try and fit like a square or a plug into a round hole, whatever
07:48the hell that saying is.
07:49It's like you're going to run my offense and I don't care what your skill set is.
07:52And I think that's BS.
07:53You have to, you know, curate what you're going to run to the skill set.
07:56And I thought that was encouraging to hear from Van Pelt today as well.
07:59And that's another thing that we've recently talked about Mike and I, when we're going
08:02to work and from work, we always have our little like, you know, we talk about things
08:06that are on our minds.
08:07And that was one thing about Alex Van Pelt as a play caller where, you know, how bad
08:12would he have to be for him to really fail?
08:14Because that's the one big question mark, because a lot of being a good offensive coordinator
08:18is one being able to know, okay, I want to stack things on top of each other, which I
08:22think in Cleveland, that often did a great job of where they give you so many looks and
08:26run actions and things that look the same and you can build off it and give the defense
08:30a lot to think about.
08:31But when it comes to like the raw play calling, a lot of it is just communicating with really
08:35your quarterback, especially what do you like?
08:37What do you not like?
08:38What are you comfortable with?
08:39Because that's where there's disconnect when the quarter, when the offense play caller
08:43and a lot of people give lip service to, oh, we're so versatile, we are going to adjust
08:47our personnel.
08:48A lot of people can say that not a lot of people are going to do it.
08:50And with Van Pelt, having been a quarterback, having seen how so many people do it, with
08:55Aaron Rodgers, with Andy Dalton, he understands that you can't give these guys plays they
08:59don't like because you're putting them in a bad position, they're not sure of themselves,
09:03that may affect their on field performance, and maybe there's a trickle down.
09:06So again, another thing we talked about with Van Pelt that we actually got confirmation
09:10on from him, where it is a very collaborative process, which I feel like is one of the biggest
09:15parts of being an effective play caller.
09:17For sure.
09:18All right.
09:19So we're going to go over at game time, and then we'll get into Drake May, kind of what
09:23they did at practice today, the offensive line, and then the rest of our stuff.
09:27So game time, let's talk about them because college football, NFL football are back.
09:33And frankly, I'm ready to get to a game.
09:34I know I get into these Patriots games as a media member, but BC's here, Bill O'Brien's
09:39over there.
09:40So that's going to be super fun.
09:41And you can use game time to get into those games.
09:43They have a new feature over at game time.
09:45It's called Game Time Picks, and it makes getting tickets to these games that much easier.
09:50There's no fluff.
09:51There's no, you know, there's no crap.
09:52You just click Game Time Picks and they give you the best deals.
09:54There's super deals, awesome deals, and I'm not just saying that that's what they're called.
09:58That's literally what they're called in the app.
10:00So and I noticed the other day, even with Patriots Seahawks, you could get into the lower
10:04bowl at Gillette Stadium for as low as 270 bucks, which, yes, this is a rebuilding team,
10:09but that ain't bad for a week two game with still some hope around the Patriots.
10:13So that's game time again.
10:15Game Time Picks makes curation easier to save more on sports, concerts, comedy, theater,
10:20and more.
10:21I know Taylor's going to a concert tonight.
10:23I don't know if he used game time.
10:25However, you can, of course, Taylor used game time for the for the concert tonight.
10:30And so, yeah, you can get into not just sporting events, but concerts as well.
10:34So download the game time app today.
10:36Create an account over there and use code CLNS for $20 off your first purchase.

10:46Download game time today.
10:47Last minute tickets, lowest price guaranteed over at game time.
10:51All right, let's before we get into the offensive line shuffle, which I've teased twice now
10:55because it's pretty important.
10:57What did you see on field from Drake May and Jacoby Bursette today?
11:00Who was better?
11:01Who was worse?
11:02Any any highlight plays that stood out from the day?
11:04Yeah, I tried not to read too much into this because they weren't in pads and, you know,
11:08a lot of these were slower paced, more walkthroughs.
11:11I thought both guys had impressive throws and also both ironically had plays that were
11:16either turnovers or near turnovers or they targeted Jaheim Bell and Del Pettis was the
11:21guy who wound up breaking up the play.
11:23Jacoby Bursette had one like again, that's the thing that they were both forced, even
11:27though maybe they in themselves weren't turnover worthy plays.
11:30I know Jacoby came kind of close where Del felt like he could have maybe intercepted
11:34him on a throw then Drake.
11:37There was a difference of opinion.
11:39I know Mike Reese thought that maybe it was on Bell because it hit his hands.
11:43I think you could argue that the play itself from Drake wasn't turnover worthy because
11:47it was deflected and then intercepted, but it felt like he forced it into a window because
11:51I remember before he let it go, I'm like, I don't like that.
11:54I hope that's not where the ball is about to go.
11:56And then it did pops up in the air because Del Pettis was all over it.
12:00Really great day for Del Pettis.
12:01Stock up for him.
12:02He was going to be in my MD in the notebook section at the end.
12:05No, that's OK.
12:06You can go.
12:07Let's do it.
12:09I just had a really good day.
12:10Two pass breakups.
12:11One on Brissette, I believe.
12:12One on Drake May.
12:13One was in 11s.
12:14One was in 7 on 7s.
12:15But Gerard Mayo talking on Monday or Wednesday.
12:18I think it was Monday, but he's making a real push to make it 53.
12:22And when you continue to have good training camp practices, you have a game coming up
12:25still.
12:26He's making a really solid push for himself to make this team.
12:29Yeah.
12:30Gerard Mayo acknowledged it too yesterday.
12:31He said that Pettis was going to make the decision very difficult.
12:34So keep an eye on him.
12:35I sneak peek.
12:37I'm going to have a post-preseason roster projection.
12:40As of right now, Del Pettis is on it.
12:42This comment, Drake May, I'm assuming you mean, is having trouble in these two-minute
12:46drives, which is a fair point because I'm guessing you know from our reporting, Jacoby
12:50Brissette was able to lead a drive and put the Patriots in field goal position.
12:54That has been pretty consistent this summer.
12:56He is really almost every time been able to move the offense down and put them in a field
13:00goal range.
13:01Drake May has had trouble, but I'll also acknowledge the fact that, one, the pass rush was a bit
13:06of a big issue for a lot of the times that he's had to run this drill where, you know,
13:10like against the Eagles where he would have been sacked on almost every drop back.
13:14Also there's not a ton of separation.
13:15Like was the throw to Jaheim Bell forced?
13:17Yes.
13:18Not a great play by him.
13:19Also, he forced it because nobody was open and it feels like that's the case a lot with
13:22Drake May where when he tries these end of half situations, there just aren't a lot of
13:26good options for him to throw to.
13:28So it's hard to know how much is on May and how much is on Brissette.
13:31It doesn't feel like Drake is just like, oh no, you know, an end of half situation and
13:35his brain falls out.
13:37It just feels like he doesn't ever have a lot of great options.
13:39Do you want to make that distinction?
13:41But Drake did also have a missed throw to KJ Osborne, who he's had really good rapport
13:45with recently.
13:46It was the first time they haven't had a deep connection in the past few days.
13:49Really good double move from KJ Osborne.
13:51Got open.
13:52Drake overthrew him.
13:53Not the worst thing in the world.
13:54But even still, both guys had good throws.
13:55I had Jacoby Brissette at a really nice corner to Jalen Rager where Christian Gonzalez was
14:00in coverage.
14:01Rager did a great job high pointing it.
14:03I think Gonzalez makes that play in a game, right?
14:06I think so.
14:07I think he makes it more competitive, but I also was impressed by Jalen going up to
14:11get it.
14:12It wasn't like a bad throw.
14:13I just think Gonzalez could be more competitive.
14:15But also Jalen Rager and Jacoby Brissette had a little bit of chemistry today.
14:19There was a one minute drill where the first two passes went to Rager on looks like comebacks
14:24or curls.
14:25Really tight coverage.
14:26But Rager came back to the ball and attacked it in the air.
14:28Showed the kind of hands we don't see from him very consistently.
14:32I really like that.
14:33Just going through my notes here.
14:35That was really.
14:36I like the way Jacoby hit a backside dig to Jalen Polk.
14:39Another guy who was very, very busy today.
14:41So I like those throws from Jacoby Brissette.
14:43Thought he had a better day overall than he did yesterday.
14:46And then Drake May.
14:48The throws that I liked from him.
14:49Oh, the shallow cross to Jalen Polk where it looked like he started on his right, got
14:53kind of deep in his progression.
14:55Jalen Polk was the backside receiver on a crossing route.
14:58And then he had a really nice touch throw to Polk who caught it and would have probably
15:01ripped off a big play.
15:03So both.
15:04Oh, also a glance route.
15:05Same day in a row.
15:06We've seen this.
15:07It's his concept.
15:08We're basically like Drake will have a backside isolated receiver and it'll be an RPO where
15:12he kind of fakes it, reads a defender and then has a layer throw.
15:16I love those concepts because it gives receivers an opportunity to get big plays because you're
15:21behind the zone defense.
15:22There usually isn't anybody there to tackle you and you have space.
15:26So yeah, both guys had plays that I didn't love.
15:29Drake had maybe one more that I didn't love, but they both had impressive throws.
15:32Not taking too much away from this one.
15:34I had my headline is solid day for both top quarterbacks in walkthrough practice.
15:39So yeah, I agree.
15:42I asked the question because it's what the people want.
15:44But at the end of the day, on a day like today where, again, like I mentioned off the top,
15:48long practice, not too much to take away because again, it's slower.
15:51It was not as competitive.
15:53But you're right.
15:54I thought a solid day from both guys overall.
15:56All right.
15:57Let's talk about the offensive line because Badarian Lowe was out today.
16:01He suffered a minor oblique injury, according to Mark Daniels, who tweeted that out prior
16:06to practice.
16:07So it was the middle of practice, but regardless, we know what's wrong with Badarian Lowe.
16:11And it caused a major shakeup along the offensive line.
16:14Chooks of Corifor ends up as the left tackle.
16:16Siddy So is back at left guard.
16:18David Andrews at center.
16:20Layden Robinson at right guard.
16:22And Mike Onwenu, big Mike Onwenu, gets some reps at the right tackle position.
16:27Elliott Wolfe called Mike Onwenu a right tackle after they signed him.
16:31They then did not really play him all that much at right tackle.
16:34He has been inside a guard.
16:35Greg Medard held his feet to the fire a little bit the other day when Elliott Wolfe spoke
16:41to us.
16:42Basically said, you told us he was a right tackle.
16:43You haven't played him there.
16:44Why?
16:45But now, due to injury, big Mike gets bumped out to the outside.
16:49I know you are of the mindset that Mike should be, or Mike Onwenu should be a guard.
16:53He's a better guard.
16:56Was this the right move, though, with him because of the depleting tackle depth?
17:00The way I look at it is, with tackle, again, you have Vardarian Lowe and Calvin Anderson
17:06both hurt, right?
17:07So now it's just getting really thin.
17:09You have Caden Wallace, who yesterday, right away, after the Vardarian Lowe injury, comes
17:17in and plays left tackle.
17:18But you sit on it, you watch the film, and you realize, okay, Caden Wallace is going
17:22to be our left tackle and then our backup right tackle.
17:25You're stretched really thin at the position.
17:27So more guards in play, Nick Leverett's back at practice.
17:30You bump big Mike out, you take away a guard, but you add depth to the tackle position.
17:34Long story short, Taylor, what do you make of it?
17:37What did you see today?
17:38Do you think this is potentially their best lineup moving forward, or do you think this
17:42should be more temporary until Vardarian Lowe comes back?
17:44Well, I mean, it's a team that has a lot of good guards and not a whole lot of tackle
17:48depth.
17:49So I know my buddy Andrew DeSilva on Twitter was saying, oh, I don't know, Mike Onwenu,
17:53I don't know if they'll want to kick him outside.
17:55It would take a worst-case scenario, and I said, there's about one worst-case scenario
17:59away from that reality.
18:01And then we walk onto the practice field, and like you mentioned, we have Lane Robinson
18:04next to Mike Onwenu.
18:05I have mixed feelings about this.
18:07Because one, based on the offseason the Patriots had, it feels like their future offensive
18:13line, the way they see it, obviously Andrew's in the center position or kind of up in the
18:17air long-term, although he'll probably be around the next couple of years.
18:20But it is left to right, Caden Wallace, Sidney So, Layton Robinson, and Mike Onwenu.
18:26Now I understand the idea of putting Onwenu in tackle, and I love him next to Layton Robinson
18:33as a run-blocking duo.
18:34Like, I think they're going to put some defensive linemen in a lot of linebackers' laps.
18:39I love using that phrase, but it's exciting.
18:42That was definitely something I was pumped about.
18:44Sidney So showed that he could be good at left guard.
18:46He's been inconsistent this preseason.
18:49But here's the thing.
18:51I'm excited to see Caden Wallace finally start and learn from his mistakes and all that good
18:55stuff.
18:56But based on this preseason, Layton Robinson has been the significantly better rookie of
19:00the two.
19:01Caden Wallace has had good moments, but he's also had his struggles.
19:04Sometimes he's let guys get into his chest and then stand him up, and he's gotten kind
19:08of tossed to the side or lost control of certain blocks.
19:12And then with his hands, sometimes his strike timing or placement is off, and that'll lead
19:17to his block not being as effective or him not being able to sustain.
19:20Whereas Layton hasn't had as many of those problems, I will say for him what worries
19:24me is his change of direction.
19:25You can really see where if he makes a glaring mistake, which he doesn't really, but if he
19:29does, it's going to be hard for him to recover.
19:31He just doesn't really move like that.
19:33But he's long, he's got strong hands, and kind of like Mike and Wenu, he still also
19:37takes up a lot of space.
19:38So he can make up for those things.
19:41All that said, Chooks has shown that he can be a solid starter, also has stuff he has
19:46to improve.
19:47So him going to the left over Kane Wallace right now does make sense the same way that
19:51it seems like Chooks is still going to start at right tackle if everyone's healthy.
19:55Sidney So back at left guard where we know, obviously, again, last year he is comfortable
19:59being.
20:00Then you keep Layton Robinson at his college position where he's the most comfortable next
20:04to Mike and Wenu, who is a veteran, who's very smart.
20:06So you give him a little bit of help there.
20:09I don't like Mike and Wenu with tackle, he's 350 pounds.
20:13And I just don't think it's where you put your best, maybe your best offensive player.
20:18You're just taking him from a spot where he could be a pro bowler and putting him somewhere
20:21where he's just solid.
20:23So I think it's fine.
20:25I understand why this is the combination right now.
20:27I think it probably is better than putting Wallace out there if Scott Peters and company
20:31aren't ready for him to start.
20:34Just again, I just don't like the idea of him winning with tackle, and he's 350 pounds.
20:38I don't know if there's another 350 pound right tackle or tackle on either side in the
20:42NFL.
20:43So less than ideal, but understandable given the circumstances.
20:47I agree with you.
20:48I think it, originally when they trotted it out there, I was like, come on, give Caden
20:52Wallace a chance.
20:54You want to see him out there.
20:56He's your left tackle of the future.
20:57It's one of the most important positions on the offense.
21:00But taking a step back, taking a little bit of reason into account, like yes, he's a rookie.
21:07You don't want to have to just throw him into the mix just because of an injury.
21:11And too early, and then you want him out there.
21:12It's kind of like the Drake May thing where, you know, with, with, with reset, right?
21:17Like we, we talked about Zappi being a guy who you could throw out there if Joe Corey
21:21was stuck on her, because he could just basically take some reps, you know, until Drake Bay's
21:27ready to cover sets back.
21:28It's similar to that, where if they're not ready to put Caden Wallace at left tackle
21:32full time, then use true Sakura for, for now, this isn't, there's no rush for these guys.
21:37There's still no, as much as we want Drake May out there, there's no rush for him to
21:41be out there.
21:42As much as we want Caden Wallace out there, don't just put them in there just because
21:45of injury.
21:46Put them out there when he's ready.
21:47And so I think it makes sense.
21:49And big Mike sort of is the trickle down to right tackle as the stop gap, because you
21:54have to take chutes away from the right side.
21:56So I don't hate it.
21:58I want to see Caden Wallace out there just as much as the rest of us.
22:01But at the end of the day, you got to do what you got to do.
22:04I wish this, you know, I wish we were able to talk to the offensive coaches after practice
22:09instead of before, because we weren't able to ask Scott Peters much about this.
22:14But it was very popular today.
22:15I've never seen that many people around an offensive line coach.
22:18Yeah, he was.
22:19He was very popular.
22:20I'm surprised he didn't get 15 questions in about the strike system today, Taylor.
22:24But I figured he would.
22:26That's why I was like, you know what, like I another time, another time.
22:30Yeah.
22:31But that's the, that's the real offensive line news.
22:32Not too much to take away from practice itself today, because again, it wasn't as higher
22:37intensity.
22:38So we're going to see some injuries with Darien Lowe out troops of core for moves to
22:41the left side and Mike on one who bumps out to right tackle.
22:44So we'll see how that plays out moving forward.
22:45Again, Mark Daniels reporting that it's a minor oblique injury for Darien Lowe.
22:50So expect him to be back sooner rather than later.
22:52I would think.
22:53And we'll see how that hinders with the rest of it.
22:55All right.
22:56Quick word from our friends at Price Picks.

24:11Um, all right, let's empty the notebook here again.
24:14Like I mentioned a, a, a quicker practice today, so it turns into a quicker rundown,
24:19but we did still see, um, a couple of things on the practice field that were noteworthy.
24:24Um, I'll just say wide receivers continue to look like Tyquan Thornton, KJ Osborne,
24:28and Demario Douglas as sort of their top trio in 11 personnel.
24:33They're working Jalen Polk in there a little bit more too.
24:36Um, I thought he had a solid day.
24:37He was targeted a lot.
24:38Two days in a row, Jalen Polk's been targeted a lot.
24:41They're still putting, uh, excuse me.
24:45They're still putting Osborne out there first, but Jalen Polk continues to roll in.
24:48You there?
24:49Oh, I'm sorry.
24:50Oh, I'm sorry.
24:51No, that's fine.
24:52I was sending you something in our private chat to be honest.
24:56But it does feel kind of like KJ and Jalen Polk are really splitting reps because we've
25:02seen times where Jalen Polk's the first guy out there and then we've seen times where
25:05it's actually KJ.
25:07So it does feel like there's a little bit of a mix there.
25:09Um, Jalen Polk, I'd say his best catch of the day was that crossing route.
25:13It's more the quality of the way he catches passes more than what actually happens on
25:17those catches because a lot of the time, like he'll rack up receptions and then you kind
25:21of look and you're like, Oh wow.
25:22He's got more than anybody else.
25:24Yes.
25:25But really he's a quiet killer.
25:26Exactly.
25:27But he always attacks the ball and a lot of what he does, I feel like is going to be more
25:30appreciated.
25:31It's like a chain mover where like we kind of discussed this, I think as a downfield
25:35option, it's going to take a lot of chemistry because he's someone who I think is going
25:38to win on a lot of back shoulder balls.
25:40I think his type of speed is something where he gets late separation.
25:44So they were just going to have to kind of give him air to run under it a little bit.
25:47Kind of like Taekwon, but just a different type of style.
25:50Yeah.
25:51It's pretty much my big observations on the receiver's busy day for Jalen Polk.
25:54Like I said, Jalen Rager had a few catches, looked impressive.
25:58KJ Osborne didn't really do much.
26:00Demario Douglas, I didn't really notice him much at all.
26:02Taekwon Thornton got a lot of praise from Tyler Hughes, the wide receivers coach from
26:08Demario Douglas.
26:09He was someone we spoke to after practice and really it just sounds like you're impressed
26:13by his shorts.
26:14Yeah.
26:16And Taekwon mentioned that just not as much sloppiness, which we try to do as respectfully
26:22as possible.
26:23I asked him about last year.
26:24I remember I was like, how much freedom do you have in your routes?
26:26He said, oh yeah, coach Brown wants me to use my speed and I'm like, but you don't know
26:30how to do that yet.
26:31You barely played in the NFL.
26:33So like, where is that coming from?
26:35But he said like attention to detail and it's really cool.
26:37I'm excited for Taekwon, man.
26:39It's kind of like Vardarian Lowe, a little bit where it's a guy who you can tell works
26:42hard.
26:43He doesn't do anything wrong.
26:45It's just for Vardarian Lowe, it's that he was in a tough spot.
26:48He got traded here.
26:49The offensive line situation was a mess.
26:50His coaching wasn't very good.
26:51He kept getting thrown out as a starter when everyone knew he wasn't a starter at that
26:55point.
26:56Maybe yet he has to prove that still.
26:57But yeah, that's kind of the case with Taekwon, where obviously him not being on the field
27:01has been completely outside of his control, but this offseason Demario Douglas mentioned
27:05how they've trained a lot together.
27:06We all know.
27:07We saw the videos.
27:08But Taekwon seems like a dude who puts all the work in.
27:10Now he's been available.
27:13It doesn't seem like he's going to start the season on IR, which is awesome.
27:17Throw my freaking roster projection from pre-preseason into the sea because Taekwon's around.
27:22The on-field product hasn't been maybe what we wanted because there's not a whole lot
27:26to talk about.
27:28But they clearly like what they see.
27:29They like his skill set and his athleticism.
27:31So that's been really cool.
27:33And also, if you want a reason to get excited for Taekwon, look at him as a blocker.
27:36I know it's like Taekwon or Nikhil Harry kind of territory, but for all the crap he gets
27:41about his frame and all that, he's a guy who gets locked in and is very aggressive.
27:46He knows no block, no rock.
27:48So yeah.
27:49I was just going to say it.
27:50The no block, no rock.
27:51That's what they say in the wide receiver room over there.
27:52Yeah.
27:53Just excited for Taekwon, man.
27:54He deserves it.
27:55He puts the work in.
27:56Now he's on the field.
27:57They're priming him to be a starter.
27:58Hopefully he can take advantage.
28:00For sure.
28:01One last observation from me before we get out of here.
28:03I noticed a lot of Jermichael Hastie in team drills with the starting offense.
28:07He was rotating in behind Antonio Gibson before Kevin Harris today.
28:11Now, I'm not sure if they were primarily passing reps.
28:15I couldn't exactly tell because the way I was watching it, I was back and forth on both
28:20fields.
28:21But I did see Hastie out there a lot.
28:22Again, talking about our rides to and from work.
28:25We talked about Jermichael Hastie this morning and kind of how and if they get him on the
28:28roster.
28:29They have bugs in your car.
28:30I swear.
28:31Literally.
28:32Yeah.
28:33So we didn't know what was up with Jermichael Hastie, if he was going to be on our roster
28:37or not.
28:38But he got some work today with the offense.
28:40He's obviously a good special teamer.
28:41So he's the guy who I noticed getting a little bit more extra run on offense.
28:46Any more observations from you, Taylor, before we get out of here, out of this quick hitter
28:49from day 19?
28:50Yeah.
28:51One with Jermichael Hastie.
28:52He's someone who I'm trying to decide whether it's him or Kevin Harris on the roster.
28:56I think either could be cut and find a way back.
28:58But Jermichael has been one of the top guys on the special teams units.
29:01He does look like their top backup as a receiving back.
29:05He does also bring some wiggle and some juice to a runner.
29:08And Romandre Stevenson said he has improved a lot.
29:11So I would definitely keep an eye on him.
29:13Kicker competition, Joey Sly continues to really be the guy who stands out most there.
29:18Looking at the numbers, Chad went three for five.
29:21Joey Sly went three for four.
29:23Chad Ryland did cap a one-minute drive for Kobe Brissette in the starting offense with
29:27a 47-yard field goal.
29:28Give him credit there.
29:29Bailey Zappi, I mentioned yesterday, had maybe his worst day of the summer.
29:33Really bounced back today.
29:34It was, you know, he was the scout team quarterback, but there were a bunch of tight window throws.
29:39They were short to intermediate, more underneath, but still tight windows that he was hitting,
29:44putting it right where his receiver could get it, and it couldn't be contested.
29:47So you got to give Bailey Zappi his flowers, man.
29:49I hope whatever happens works out for him because he's had a good summer, I think, overall.
29:54Done everything that's asked of him.
29:55No one's had a negative thing to say.
29:58So that's all I got on Bailey Zappi.
30:01Liam Thornedale was the backup center, or replaced, I'm sorry, Lynn Robinson at right
30:06guard when he was with the starters.
30:08I thought that was kind of significant because he's often the backup center.
30:12Thornedale did struggle today when he did get backup center snaps.
30:17They were like, there was a botch snap.
30:19There were three that were either high or low.
30:22Not a great day for him.
30:23I think there was also an everyone but the center penalty that he was responsible for.
30:27So, you know, that's not really great.
30:30I'm also just want to, there were some things in the chat I wanted to acknowledge too, to
30:33make sure I'm not ignoring anybody.
30:36What was about Javon Baker?
30:37He looked good today.
30:38No drops.
30:39And I saw.
30:40It seemed like he had, you know, some strong hand catches.
30:42I had him on a nice quick in-breaker on one play.
30:45I thought he went up and got it, and, you know, he was pretty open, but it was a nice
30:48throw, nice catch.
30:49You're getting him involved, so.
30:51That's another example of these days blending together.
30:52I said the glance was to Booty.
30:54That was yesterday.
30:55Today, it was Javon Baker.
30:57I also asked Tyler Hughes about something that's been bothering me about his game, where
31:01I'm like, obviously, he's super talented, but it seems like he's leaving his feet a
31:04lot when he doesn't need to.
31:05Is that something you guys are working on?
31:07He clearly was trying to stick up for his guy.
31:09He mentioned that, you know, Baker's an aggressive guy.
31:12He likes to high point and attack the ball in the air, which they do love about him,
31:15but he did slightly acknowledge at the end that they are working on him.
31:19You know, he said they want guys to run through the catch, where it's not like Brendan Lloyd,
31:23where you grab it and then you're like this in the air and it's like, no, there was so
31:26much room.
31:27Just keep running.
31:28So we did kind of acknowledge that's something that Javon Baker is working on.
31:32So awesome for him.
31:33That was definitely an area of improvement.
31:34I thought that was, I'll just say too, like that was a, a perfect question to answer like
31:39in the media.
31:40I thought really, cause like, this is what's happening.
31:42Tell us about it.
31:43And he was like, well, he, his game is going to get the ball as high as possible.
31:48And you can't do that if you don't leave your feet and jump, but you have to use that, you
31:53know, like you have to use that skillset in certain ways where if it's a go up and
31:57get it play, then go up and get it.
31:58If it's a run through the football and just let it come to you, you have to let it come
32:01to you.
32:02So I thought that was something, I don't know, it was almost like an obvious makes it sound
32:08like it's, it's, it's obvious, but it was like a, you know, a question and answer that
32:12just made, made a ton of sense.
32:13I heard his answer.
32:14I was like, Oh yeah.
32:15Like, you're not going to teach him to not leave his feet because that's his game.
32:18But there are, there are definitely plays, even like the one, the, the drop he had in
32:25the game to make.
32:26Now he granted he was, he was leaving his feet and diving forward.
32:29But I thought if he was just on his horse and ran through that, I could've been a touchdown,
32:32like run right through it and go get the ball.
32:34It was a little outside of him, but those are the plays where instead of leaving your
32:37feet just run through the catch.
32:38But that's my soapbox on day one.
32:40Yeah.
32:41I always think of that play in the back of the end zone where he jumped and they pushed
32:44him and he got his foot down, but I'm still like, you lose control and you no longer dictate
32:48whether you're in bounds.
32:49So it's just stuff like that.
32:50But yeah, no, I, I did think this was a better day for him.
32:53Give Jaylon Baker his flowers when he deserves them.
32:55Nothing on the ground, a positive day for him.
32:57That's all I got.
32:58Perfect.
32:59Sounds good.
33:00I will throw one last thing up here.
33:02This is from, uh, nope, wrong one.
33:04Sorry.
33:05Sorry, TJ.
33:06We love you.
33:07But you know, it wasn't the comment I was talking about.
33:08Josh Behringer was MVP.
33:09Bryce had a good day today.
33:10Again, he had the, he had the good day in the game.
33:13He had the nice pun.
33:14He had the mic'd up thing and he put it, put together another show today.
33:17A lot of, uh, quality hang times.
33:19Check out Alex Bart's Twitter for that.
33:21Uh, he, he had a good day today.
33:23Yeah, bro.
33:24There was a period where he was just dropping punts right outside of the end zone.
33:29It was crazy.
33:30He was just practicing, basically coughing corners and like punting.
33:32So it dies right before it bounces into the end zone.
33:35And it was just so easy for him.
33:38That dude, I really do think I would love to ask Gerard Mayo how Bryce has been.
33:43Cause I, even though he's the head coach, I feel like he probably doesn't know.
33:47But it definitely seems like Bryce has been one of their best players this off season.
33:52I'm not sure if anybody's necessarily close cause he's just been so freaking consistent.
33:56When the Patriots were not very good in 2020, uh, it felt like Jake Bailey was their best
34:01player because he punted the ball all the time and he was really good at flipping the
34:04field.
34:05Bryce Behringer has a chance on this team to be one of their best players.
34:07Like there's a huge question mark at kicker, but Bryce is a great punter and he's going
34:11to be a great punter.
34:12It feels like for a long time.
34:13He has the confidence, he has the swag for it and he's really damn good.
34:16So, uh, on that note, that's going to do it for our day 18 recap here on Patriots.
34:23They 19.
34:24They're all blending together.
34:25Taylor, as we know today, it was 19 tomorrow's 21 last recap of training camp before we get
34:29into Sunday's game and then we get into our normal, uh, season schedule and normal Patriots
34:35daily schedule.
34:36We'll keep you updated.
34:37Uh, what's coming next on the feed on Twitter.
34:39Um, and yeah, that's going to do it.
34:41So we'll be back tomorrow.
34:42Uh, until then take care of yourselves, take care of each other and we'll see you next
34:46time.
34:47Peace out, everyone.
