00:00All right, everyone.
00:21Welcome back in to an emergency live edition of the Patriots Beat Podcast.
00:26Back like 12 hours after we were on early.
00:28We did an early show.
00:29We thought it was going to be a nice easy night and now we're back.
00:33But it is Brian Heinz with Alex Barth.
00:36We are powered by our wonderful friends over at prize picks for this emergency episode
00:41because we have reached the end of the Matthew Judon saga as the Patriots have traded him
00:46to the Atlanta Falcons for a third round pick.
00:50This has gone drawn out a while, right?
00:53As the Patriots have resigned and returned a lot of their internal free agents as they
01:00were checking all these guys off the list and even extending guys who are going to be
01:03up next year, which Judon's contract was the case.
01:07And Judon just never got his money.
01:09You know, it was six and a half base salary this year.
01:11Last year of his deal, no guaranteed money remaining.
01:15And then we had, you know, the incident with the with the padded practice where he was
01:19out there and no pads.
01:20He was talking to Gerard Mayo.
01:22He left, he came back out, you know, talk to Elliot Wolf, talk to Matt grow.
01:26He left again.
01:27We didn't see him the next day.
01:28And then ever since he's, he's really been a participant.
01:30I think he missed one padded practice, but he's been out there kind of flying around.
01:34But we finally, you've been saying that something has to happen until like before the start
01:40of the season.
01:41And something has happened as they trade them to the Atlanta Falcons.
01:45So we'll get to the return.
01:47We will get to the replacements.
01:50But like, how did, how did we get here?
01:53Right.
01:54Like something had to happen, but did it have to reach this point?
01:58Do you think?
01:59No, no.
02:00And, and both sides were at fault for getting this far.
02:02I wrote back in February headline, the big Patriots off season question nobody is talking
02:07about as we were all trying to figure out the quarterbacks and all that, that they were
02:11going to have to do something with Judon and the reality, maybe it still would have ended
02:15up with him getting traded, but guys, their best player.
02:20And there was an uncertain path ahead for him.
02:23They should have figured out, they should have gotten ahead of, I think what was going
02:31to happen here in either negotiating an extension early or earlier, or figured out a trade earlier
02:38because if they knew they were going to pay everybody, pay all these guys.
02:46Not having Jude on in that plan is weird to me.
02:47I've said this, I get what they were doing, re-signing all those players and trying to
02:52establish a core, but how is that the one guy that doesn't get paid a injury?
02:58They paid other guys who were hurt last year, 30 year olds, Hunter Henry and David Andrews
03:04got extensions attitude.
03:06They paid Devon gotcha.
03:07After he sat out of practice injury, they, uh, they paid Ramondry Stevenson, Hunter Henry
03:12was also hurt at the end of last year.
03:13So he's a little older than some of those guys, but like, I, I don't understand what
03:18that was.
03:19So they should have figured out it out earlier because he would have had more value.
03:22I think they could have gotten a second round pick for him back in March if they trade them
03:26before the draft.
03:27They also would have had, if they'd figured this out earlier, how nice would it have been
03:31to have this third round pick in this previous draft?
03:35Maybe they, they, maybe they're able to move up at the end of the first round and get that
03:38tackle or move up from the third into the second.
03:41Right.
03:42They tried and they didn't have the ammunition.
03:44So now look, this happens.
03:46The Niners are in the exact same spot with Brandon.
03:49They thought they were going to get a deal done.
03:51They didn't trade them at the draft and they had opportunities.
03:53Now suddenly things change.
03:54They don't get a deal done, but this is part of being a GM.
03:57It's not an easy part.
03:58It's part.
03:59I don't envy.
04:00I know people think we like to play GM on this show, but this is something I'm glad
04:03I don't have to deal with being able to project that far ahead and no, but they should have,
04:09he should have been one of the first guys that got a deal done with when it became apparent,
04:12they weren't going to get a deal done.
04:14They should have worked on a trade.
04:15Maybe it didn't become apparent until camp, but it's first time GM and he had a welcome
04:22to the NFL moment, gauge the situation better.
04:26And on Judon's part, I think when you got a little later on, was he being realistic
04:31in his ask?
04:32The reporting was, they were very far apart.
04:35I can't imagine the Patriots were trying to stiff him too much.
04:38And some of the other contracts they gave out, it just would be uncharacteristic.
04:44So to me, both sides are fault that it got this far.
04:47It should not have gotten this far.
04:48That should have been resolved back in March or April before the draft.
04:53Somebody pointed out we're on the opposite sides.
04:54We usually are.
04:55That's true.
04:56There we go.
04:57It should.
04:59It should not have gotten this far.
05:00It should have been figured out before the draft.
05:02That being said, and this kind of, we laid out four points before the show, Brian, how
05:06did we get here?
05:08Was this the right move for where they are?
05:09Did they get enough and what happens next?
05:12So I, or I guess before I give my next point of, you know, now that we're here, I don't
05:17know if you feel any differently about getting to this point, but I don't think, I think
05:21it got too far and I think both sides are at fault.
05:24Yeah, it was just, I mean, if you go back to that 21 spending spree, he was the hit,
05:30right?
05:31Like he was the best player.
05:32He's been the best player post Brady.
05:33He's been probably the face of the franchise.
05:37Like if it wasn't bill, I know bill was getting thrown on like Thursday night football graphics,
05:41but it was, it was probably Matt Judon, right?
05:43Like he was the face of the franchise.
05:44So it was a little weird that everyone gets paid except for him.
05:51Now we don't know, like, I don't think nothing's come out from Atlanta side about a contract.
05:57Like unless they pull the jets move with a son, radically you'd imagine they're trading
06:01for him and giving him money.
06:03So maybe we'll get a better read on what that contract is going to look like and what
06:06his demands were.
06:07But we don't know that.
06:09And, but yeah, it probably shouldn't have got to this point.
06:12So I would just add to Brian, sorry to something you just said about it.
06:15He was the face of the franchise post Brady.
06:17Yeah, he was like, I mean, bill was, but as a player, he was faced the fan chat franchise
06:23post Brady.
06:24He bought into the program.
06:25I know people are going to remember him as a guy that shot his way out of town, but I
06:30think for a long time he bought in and, and he was at the forefront of trying to establish
06:34something new.
06:35I remember the Brady game when they came back and he was the tone setter that week.
06:40And he was kind of relaying what worked for his Ravens teams when they came in and played
06:47Brady and talking about things he learned from Ray Lewis and Terrell sugs.
06:51And he like, I don't know, I, I, the signing in 2021 was still a good signing.
07:00It sucks.
07:01It ended this way, but I would call Matthew Judon's career as a Patriot on the whole positive.
07:06It just sucks.
07:07The two sides couldn't get out of their way at the end here.
07:09Yep.
07:10I mean, you go on patriots.com and they have five players on the top of their website and
07:14he's in the middle, so they're going to have to change that obviously.
07:18But yeah, night for some people down there, I think.
07:22Yeah.
07:23But the trade itself, we did get to this part, this point.
07:26So was it the right or wrong move?
07:29You know, it's going to hurt them on the field and we'll talk about the replacements, but
07:34you saw last year without him, their pass rush dropped significantly.
07:38I think two years ago, I don't have the numbers exactly, but, but they were either fourth
07:42or fifth in the league in sacks and then he gets hurt last year and they kind of dropped.
07:46I think they were like 27th or 28th.
07:48They finished.
07:49And there were some other factors that went into that, but Judon obviously played a big
07:53role in that.
07:54So the pass rush is going to take a hit, but he's 32.
07:58He's coming off the injury.
08:00Patriots aren't competing for a Superbowl this year.
08:02Probably not competing for a playoff spot.
08:04Like he's not in your next contention window.
08:06He's not on your next contending team.
08:09So it is trading him right now.
08:12Do you think this is the right reasons for that or the wrong that, you know, we're going
08:16to lose the pass rush and maybe as we just, uh, you know, lay the floor, lay the foundation
08:21that Gerard Mayo keeps saying, we're losing a locker room guy and maybe a guy that might
08:25make our defense a little bit worse, which is going to be supposed to be the strength
08:28of this team.
08:29I think it's the right move for where things got again.
08:32I would have paid him back in March.
08:34And I don't know if I said that before with my whole rant about figure it out back then
08:37paid him or pay him or trade him, trade him.
08:39I would have paid him back in March.
08:40I would have given him the money to get through this year.
08:43And then I would have parted ways after this year.
08:45He is a, he was important locker room presence and a guy that does help you remain competitive
08:50because you don't want losing to become habitual.
08:52But I don't know at this point, was he still going to be that positive locker room presence
08:59given what was happening with his contract?
09:01Were they going to be able to get him for just a year?
09:02Were they going to have to sign him to like a three or four year deal that kind of changed
09:05the numbers on it.
09:06So once, once you hit that, that Monday practice that he walked out of, they had to make a
09:12move.
09:13I think at that point they had to make a move.
09:14It is a big blow to this year.
09:16And I don't love it because again, you don't want losing to become habitual.
09:20You don't want to essentially tank.
09:22They have other veteran leaders in that room.
09:24They re-signed a bunch of guys, guys like Devon Godshar are going to need to step up
09:28Jabril Peppers, Kyle Duggar.
09:31But yeah, I just don't think, I just think they're past the point of no return.
09:36I think they're past the point of no return.
09:39And I think this had to happen.
09:40Yeah.
09:41I mean, it's tough.
09:42Like you're already down Christian Barmore.
09:44So taking Matthew Judon off that, that pass rush, like that, that's, that hurts.
09:50There's no easy way to say that, like that, that hurts.
09:52And it's going to make your defense worse this year.
09:56And again, like your defense was going to be, if you were going to try to squeak five,
10:00six wins and build some positive momentum, it was probably going to be your defense unless
10:03it's like a late season surge by Drake May or something.
10:05So you don't want losing to become, you know, habitual.
10:10You don't want that to be a thing that, that, you know, is into your team.
10:14So, and Judon was going to help not make that happen.
10:16But I think with the, with the age and again, not being in that next contending window and
10:23with the, you know, episode on the early padded practices probably had to happen.
10:29And then with the return, which we can get into a third round pick top 100 pick, maybe
10:34even Atlanta, like in that 80, 85 range, like mid third round, that's a pretty good return.
10:39I think we were thinking maybe it's fourth, fifth, when we were talking about this earlier.
10:44So I think the third round pick there is great value.
10:47And I'm sure, you know, Atlanta lost Braylon Trice, their rookie edge rusher a few days
10:52ago for the season.
10:53So that probably maybe bumped this up and it seemed like they had a healthy market too.
10:57I know Chicago was involved and I believe Jeremy Fowler said the Texans were involved.
11:01So it seems like a few teams were interested on Judon, but you know, I think when you're
11:05deciding right or wrong move, the third round pick definitely makes this a little more enticing.
11:11And it was probably around round and a half higher than I was expecting this to be at
11:15this point.
11:16Yeah.
11:17So some number, I actually, this is about right.
11:21This is about what they should have gotten.
11:22And they didn't have to pay the late in season tax.
11:24I was initially Judon's worth the top 100 pick.
11:27Yeah.
11:28Judon's worth the top 100 pick.
11:29I was expecting a fourth or fifth, not the six with Stefan Gilmore.
11:32They avoided that situation, but I'm going to give you some numbers, Brian.
11:35I posted this on Twitter earlier.
11:39So Matthew Judon, the last three seasons, keep in mind he turns 32 tomorrow, by the
11:44way, happy birthday to Matthew Judon.
11:45Happy early birthday.
11:46Hopefully he gets paid for his birthday.
11:48He deserves it.
11:49He deserves it.
11:50Yes, he does.
11:51Matthew Judon entering his age 32 season, coming off a season ending injury.
11:56The previous three seasons, 38 games, 32 sacks, 62 quarterback hits, 33 tackles for
12:05loss.
12:07Here's another player entering his age 31 season.
12:11So when you're younger, does have a contract, Judon didn't have, doesn't have a contract
12:15right now.
12:16Essentially.
12:17This player has a long-term contract also coming off a season ending injury, 39 games,
12:2323 and a half sacks.
12:25So that's nine fewer, eight and a half fewer, 34 quarterback hits, almost half fewer, 25
12:33tackles for a loss.
12:34That's eight fewer in one more game.
12:38That's Khalil Mack right before he got traded to the chargers.
12:43So not the first time he got traded and he went for the hall to the bears.
12:46This is from the bears to the Raiders.
12:48So Judon across the board, better numbers, not the same pedigree Khalil Mack had been
12:54a defensive player of the year, not within that three-year window, but he'd been in defensive
12:57player of the year.
12:59Mack went for a second and a future Mack went for a second, but it was also, I'm butchering
13:05this.
13:06It was Mac and a future six for a second in March, June on went for a third in August
13:14and did so without a contract.
13:17Mack already had a deal.
13:18The bears were just shedding cap.
13:21Those are comparable trades to me.
13:23They got it when you, now, if you moved, if they moved them in, in March and got a
13:27third, I'd say they didn't get enough.
13:29I'd give up the six and get the second, but for the time of year, all things considered
13:34actually think of return.
13:36The return is right.
13:38Still think it's still sucks.
13:39They had to trade them.
13:40They still should have figured this out and paint a months ago, but to get to where they
13:42got trading a third round, getting a third round pick for him.
13:47I had Falcons will probably be a playoff team.
13:49Maybe not.
13:50That could be a top 70 pick.
13:52So that's a, that's a very good return from Elliot Wolf.
13:56Yep.
13:57He's going to be a really good fit there too.
13:59I think they need it.
14:00Yeah.
14:01Yeah.
14:02He, they, they need an, an edge rusher.
14:03So he's going to be a good fit.
14:04Him next to Grady Jarrett.
14:05Come on.
14:06Yeah.
14:07But, um, yeah, I was kind of with you, like Jude on is worth a top 100 pick, but when
14:12you're at August 14th, right, like you don't see these guys move this late in the year
14:16like that.
14:17So I was, that's where it kind of maybe fourth, I wouldn't say fifth, but the fringe fourth
14:23round range I thought.
14:24So I thought a third round pick, uh, was good value an hour.
14:27And now they have, uh, I believe nine picks in next year's draft.
14:31They have their own first, their own second, their own third, and now the Atlanta third
14:34in the top 100 there.
14:35So, uh, there's not a ton of, um, comp picks their fourth could be like 100 or one Oh one
14:41too.
14:42Yeah, definitely.
14:43So some extra capital there will maybe next year they want to move around the board, right?
14:48They have their quarterback and, you know, maybe next year they can trade down if they
14:52were there high up and they don't need a quarterback or if they want to move up for one of those
14:56offensive tackles, they have an extra third round pick and some ammunition, uh, in order
15:00to do that.
15:01So, uh, nine picks next year, that's, that's how it's looking right now.
15:06More fun for us in our live mock drafts, we'll have an extra third round pick to play with
15:09as well.
15:10So, um, that is getting traded to move up, to get Will Campbell, I'll tell you that right
15:14now.
15:15It's getting traded to get Will Campbell.
15:16It's getting traded to move back up into the end of the first, there we go.
15:20I would look at that pick more as, or one of them, maybe the Patriots third ends up
15:23getting moved.
15:24But because I had a text from a friend who freaked out, dude, the hell are they getting
15:28in the third round?
15:29Are they going to get an FCS tackle?
15:31I'd look at this a lot more as a trade chip than I would as a selectable traffic.
15:37Like you look at, you know, next year, if they're trading for a receiver, if it's CD
15:42glamor, it's DK Metcalf is the extra third they can offer maybe the difference and them
15:46landing him versus another team, getting them.
15:48So yeah, I'd view it as a, as a, as that, yeah, this is, it's probably going to be annoying
15:54for the first month or two in the season, not having Matthew Jude on out there.
15:58But then once we get December or that part of the year where we're like, okay, we have
16:02that extra third round pick.
16:04That's going to be nice to have in a couple months, right?
16:06That'll, that'll be, that'll come in handy.
16:08So yep, third round pick and return before we get on replacing Matthew Jude on and how
16:14that might look up front very quickly.
16:16Price picks is America's number one daily fantasy sports app with over 5 million active
16:20members.
16:21And it's the easiest and most exciting way to play daily fantasy sports because unlike
16:24other apps on price picks, it's just you against the numbers as you pick just more or less
16:29on two to six player stat projections and watch the winnings roll in.
16:33And price picks is the best way to win real money this football season, which players
16:37are going off, which ones aren't make your picks in less than 60 seconds and turn your
16:41sports opinions in the real money all season long on price picks.
16:45And I know we're all excited to see Drake may eventually, but another rookie quarterback
16:49is going to start week one out in Chicago and one Caleb William passing yard gets you
16:54one win on price picks every week in September.
16:56That's right.
16:57Only one yard gets you an automatic win every football season or weekend in September.
17:02So that's four weeks of free W's don't miss this deal on price picks because it's gone
17:06when September ends.
17:08Great song.
17:09Shout out Green Day.
17:10But download price picks app today and use code CL and S for a first deposit match up
17:13to $100.
17:14That's good.
17:15See L and S on price picks for deposit match up to $100 price picks.
17:20Run your game.
17:21Um, all right, last thing again, just quick emergency pod here.
17:27So last thing they have to replace Matthew Jude on now.
17:30And I said it earlier, you know, you saw last year without him when he was out with the
17:35bicep injury, uh, the sack totals fell down, uh, Josh Uche's production took a hit and
17:41that was with Christian Barmore in there.
17:44And now we, we might not have Christian Barmore.
17:46So I think a, you're hoping for a monster kind of second year jump from Keon white two.
17:53You're hoping there'll be, I'm going a, and then two that's, that's our nine o'clock show
17:58for you.
17:59But, uh, secondly, uh, Josh Uche, you know, he might be getting more attention now, but
18:05you hope he can kind of get back to what he was two years ago with double digit sacks.
18:08And then some of these depth guys were talking about O'Shea and as a men, as a lot this summer,
18:12he's looked really good, um, can provide some juice on the edge as a pass rusher.
18:16So I think those are your kind of your main three guys, you know, Uche was always going
18:21to be on his own side.
18:22So it's more white and as replacing Jude on, but, um, is that just the main guys you're
18:27looking at and how are you replacing Matthew Jude on here now that he's gone?
18:31Yeah, it's going to have to be by committee and they're already placing, replacing Christian
18:34Barmore by committee.
18:35So it's going to be a lot, but I think the one guy you look at is, is Josh Uche.
18:40He took less money, came back here, bet on himself.
18:43He's been circled as that next guy to be that pig, pin your ears back and go pass rusher.
18:49Um, like he, he wants to get paid like a, like a primary pass rusher.
18:53Here's his chance to show that's who he is.
18:55Cause I think most of it's going to fall on his plate.
18:58I think you'll see some of it from O'Shea and Zemenez, Keon White will certainly get
19:02some, especially on the earlier down some, some more work.
19:04But to me, Josh, you chase the guy, Joshua chase guys, that's got to step up here.
19:08Joshua Uche is the guy that you're looking to, to elevate his game and give you that,
19:15give you that real down in, down out sack threat.
19:20He's got to be your one-on-one winner, right?
19:22Like he, unless you see it from Keon White, like it's gotta be Josh Uche to win, win as
19:28one-on-ones and get pressure on the quarterback.
19:30Cause you know, as good as O'Shea and Zemenez has been, uh, the, the summer, like he's not
19:36Matthew Judon.
19:37He's not Josh Uche.
19:38Like, can you consistently count on him to win one-on-ones?
19:42Probably not.
19:43So it's gotta come from Uche.
19:44Uh, but yeah, a year or two Keon, Keon White leap, uh, we've been talking, maybe that could
19:49be kind of a luxury.
19:51Now it's might be a necessity up front there.
19:53You want to see him take a leap.
19:55Um, so yeah, those are the big two guys and then Anthony Jennings, you know, not a pass
19:58rusher, but he's still going to have a big role that early down kind of edge setter.
20:03Um, so that's kind of your edge, edge depth and replacement.
20:06So, um, anyone in the draft for next year, edge was probably already going to be a need,
20:12but yeah, now maybe more, I know, I know it's a Pierce, James Pierce from Tennessee.
20:17That's a top guy, but if you're picking offensive tackle, uh, first, you're probably not getting,
20:23uh, James Pierce.
20:24So quick look ahead, sorry, can you pull up?
20:29I'll pull up the, the, I have some of the edge guys.
20:33Can you pull up to free agents?
20:34Cause I, that may be more realistic.
20:38I know that they won't draft the guy on the edge, but I think that's going to be more
20:42of a little more of a, not a project, but I, if you want instant impact, you're doing
20:47that through free agency.
20:48So James Pierce is the top guy.
20:50He's gonna be a first round pick.
20:52Maybe you traded the backend of the first round.
20:54Um, is it Tia Malalu JTT Malalu is how you pronounce that from Ohio state, Jack Sawyer
21:01from Ohio state, Patrick Peyton from, uh, Florida state, Yaya block from Iowa, Josiah
21:08Stewart from Michigan.
21:09These are some of the top, uh, like the day two edge guys calling all over from Oklahoma
21:13state.
21:14Those are some of the guys I like that are going to be day two.
21:16I think Tia Malalu might Sawyer, even Peyton might sneak into the backend of the first
21:20round there, but maybe they'd be trade up candidates.
21:23Um, but yeah, I, I, they'll draft a guy and they'll probably draft a guy on the top 100.
21:30But if you're looking for like instant impact, chewed on replacement, I think you're going
21:33to have to do that through free agency.
21:34So free agents on the edge, uh, Cleo Mack is the top guy, but he's going to be, he's
21:41going to be almost 36 future Tennessee Titan.
21:44Um, Hassan Reddick is the next guy who knows where he's going to be playing any, any time.
21:50Uh, and then he's going to get, he's going to get a contract, a long-term contract.
21:53So he won't be a free.
21:54Yeah.
21:55And then it's Matthew Jude on, uh, then it's DeMarcus Lawrence.
21:58Who's going to be like 34.
22:00And then it's some younger guys.
22:02Josh sweat.
22:03Uh, he's 28 currently from Philly chase, chase young, uh, Jerome Baker from Seattle, Marcus
22:11Davenport in Detroit.
22:13So those are kind of your top edge guys.
22:15Josh sweat, chase young.
22:16Those would be the two guys I'd look at.
22:18Let me see.
22:19Defensive ends.
22:20Uh, it's all the same list.
22:23Is it pretty much, uh, that was just spot track real quick.
22:28Okay.
22:29Um, or maybe you get a, a Matthew Jude on situation where there's a guy or a, um, Hassan
22:37Reddick situation where there's a guy in the last year of his deal and you trade a third
22:42round pick for him.
22:43Yeah.
22:44Yeah.
22:45That's also what the jets gave up.
22:47Yeah.
22:48It was like a conditional third or something like that.
22:49So yeah, it was a conditional third or could it become a second, which if the guy signs,
22:52that's, that's fine.
22:53And that's a year down the road, you'd be giving up the pick in 2026 when you should
22:56be more, um, uh, solidified.
23:00Yeah.
23:01Yeah.
23:02All right.
23:03So that's it.
23:04Right.
23:05Nothing else.
23:06I think that we hit on everything there.
23:09I mean, I guess I would just add, I think you kind of touched on it.
23:11Judon's a great fit in Atlanta.
23:13Yeah.
23:14So, all right.
23:15Let me ask you this.
23:17Let me ask you that.
23:18Um, I think it was Schultz who initially reported this, who had this, that it came down to the
23:22Falcons and the bears, assuming they both offered a third, did the Patriots make the
23:28right decision?
23:29Taking the Falcons pick over the bears pick.
23:32Ooh, yes, yes.
23:39I'll say yes.
23:40I think the Falcons pick is safer because they do seem like a playoff team, but they're
23:44going to be one and done in the playoffs.
23:46So the bears could be that, that pick could be, you know, the very bottom of that round.
23:49So, um, they, there's also a chance they don't make the playoffs.
23:52They're in a better division, but, um, they could also be a playoff game.
23:56Bears are like higher floor ceiling.
23:58Almost.
23:59Right.
24:00Falcons are kind of steady in the middle there.
24:01So, uh, yeah, but, all right, uh, we'll wrap it up there unless you have any Drake May
24:09Drake May takes, you didn't get off in any of your other four shows.
24:11We don't need to talk about Drake, but it'll be our first show since I'll say this.
24:16I'm sure Drake May's glad that that's one less guy he has to deal with behind this offensive
24:18line and practice.
24:19That's my Drake May take on all this.
24:21There you go.
24:22But it will be our first show since like October that we won't go into detail on Drake.
24:27Nice refresher there.
24:28So, uh, we'll call it here.
24:30Uh, Mike and Taylor are coming up in a couple of minutes right here on the channel.
