00:00:00Halftime at the Metrodome in Minneapolis. The Minnesota Vikings leading by the measure of a mixed extra point.
00:00:07Chris Bonyol, the first miss of his career. It's 10-9 right now, and a really interesting defensive struggle thus far, Pat.
00:00:14Yeah, I think the fact that the Cowboys only have 27 yards rushing is a very telling statistic.
00:00:19I mean, they've been dominating the first two games, running football, but the Minnesota defense has really taken that away.
00:00:24There are going to be some conversations, I would think, about clock management. The Cowboys at the end of the first half.
00:00:29Yeah, they did not manage the clock well at all, and I think it was a big play by Broderick Thomas that really forced the expiration of time.
00:00:36Now, there was a clever little pitch play by Aikman, but that was really his third or fourth charge.
00:00:41He was trying to get the ball downfield into the end zone. That was taken away by good defense, and they pitched the ball to him, and he didn't pick up the first.
00:00:49Halftime now for the Writers game summary. Third down conversions, check that one out. Dallas hasn't made one yet.
00:00:57Time of possession, almost six and a half minutes in favor of Minnesota. Emmitt Smith with 27 yards. Robert Smith, 44 of his 53, came on one play.
00:01:07The Cowboys will kick off, and David Plummer has it at the 10. Heads to his right, comes back up, and is dragged down as he gets to the 20-yard line.
00:01:17You know, when you play the Cowboys, it's a measuring stick, you know? It's a measuring stick, and the first half, the Vikings have measured well.
00:01:27How about old Billy Bates, number 40, in his 13th year? I mean, he still has it? Still loves special teams? Bounces off a couple bodies?
00:01:35There you go!
00:01:38I talked to Bill before the game. He and his wife Denise have been friends for those 13 years. He said they had their fifth child last July. That's the end.
00:01:46That's it.
00:01:48That's the end. They've got five now, including triples.
00:01:52Oh yeah, the first three they had were triples.
00:01:57Here's Chris Carter.
00:02:01And the tackle is made by Dixon Edwards as Carter gets out near the 26-yard line.
00:02:07When they came in, you talk about balanced attacks. When Dallas came into this game, they were the most balanced team in football.
00:02:14But they're a little bit out of whack in the first half. They threw 19 passes and only 9 rushes, and you see what Minnesota did.
00:02:20And that's why they controlled the game. You know, 18 minutes possession to 11.
00:02:25And change for Dallas.
00:02:2810-9 is the score, second down and 5.
00:02:33Carter in motion.
00:02:37Leon Lett, Robert Smith.
00:02:41There have been some collisions, and Lett looks like he's hurt.
00:02:46Boy, you know, Haley went out for a while with a hamstring.
00:02:50Lett bounces up, but this underscores how the Cowboys are a little bit different.
00:02:56They do not have the proven depth that they've had in the past.
00:03:00They've got Chad Hennings, who's a good third tackle.
00:03:04He's over McDaniels right here, number 64.
00:03:07We'll see him.
00:03:11Now that's an all-pro guard he just shoved aside.
00:03:13Yeah, McDaniel weighs 275 pounds.
00:03:16They just kind of disposed of him. It was a pile, one of those pile-up things.
00:03:20Same kind of thing they had with Chris Henson.
00:03:21Second flower.
00:03:22Yeah.
00:03:23Third and six.
00:03:27F-J-L-O-U-R.
00:03:30They're fun.
00:03:34Flag is down.
00:03:35They may get a push-off here one way or the other.
00:03:39Let's see.
00:03:40This could go against Reed.
00:03:41That's what the Cowboys are arguing.
00:03:46Speaking of push-offs, you mentioned the anniversary of the past 20 years ago
00:03:51when Drew Pearson caught it.
00:03:53That was a classic push-off.
00:03:54Well, only now is Drew conceding that maybe he touched Nate Wright.
00:03:59Pass interference by the offense.
00:04:01It was kind of a mini-push, but he got busted.
00:04:04You know, if they're going to call defensive backs for all the little ticky-tack stuff,
00:04:07they should call the receivers from time to time, and they did there on Reed.
00:04:11You know, that game was played at the old Metropolitan Stadium in December of 1975.
00:04:17The Cowboys came up here as a wild-card play,
00:04:19and the Hail Mary pass is remembered by so many.
00:04:22But two plays before the Hail Mary, the Cowboys had a 4th-and-16,
00:04:27and Roger Staubach hit Drew Pearson for an 8-and-25.
00:04:32That was really a significant playoff.
00:04:35I think Drew may have pushed it.
00:04:36No, he did.
00:04:37Absolutely did.
00:04:41Moon.
00:04:42There's a penalty.
00:04:43We're going to get it back.
00:04:44Yeah.
00:04:45Larry Brown hit Jake Reed.
00:04:47But you know what?
00:04:48Not a bad penalty.
00:04:50I think Jake Reed is going to blow by Larry Brown on that one.
00:04:54He didn't tackle him, but he did the next best thing.
00:04:56He made sure he was not going to run by him cleanly.
00:04:59So second-half matchup, Jake Reed and Larry Brown going at it.
00:05:03Last time, Larry Brown won the matchup.
00:05:07That was an intentional interference by Larry Brown,
00:05:10and that is a smart play, Vern, because he was going to blow by him.
00:05:14He was beaten, and he knew it.
00:05:15He applauded himself.
00:05:16Yeah, he deserved to be applauded.
00:05:17He sure did.
00:05:18That is the first Dallas penalty tonight,
00:05:22and it gives the Vikings a first down at the 35-yard line.
00:05:2810-9, Minnesota.
00:05:33Carter comes left.
00:05:36Moon goes right.
00:05:37Pulls it back up, goes deep.
00:05:40Chris Carter and Larry Brown.
00:05:42Brock Merriam was back as a center fielder, but Larry Brown had good coverage.
00:05:48But you give Chris Carter a chance, and that's all you can ask for.
00:05:52I mean, he's come up with some big plays on third downs.
00:05:55This was a first down, and they're trying to get him right down the scene.
00:05:58Good rush by Tony Tolbert.
00:06:00I mean, that kind of disrupted the rhythm and didn't allow Moon to set up.
00:06:05Here's the coverage at the end.
00:06:06So Larry Brown has been involved in a lot of plays to start this second half.
00:06:12Three that we can think of.
00:06:13Yeah.
00:06:17You're on your game tonight, Bert.
00:06:19Oh, I tell you.
00:06:22Get me in the land of Lefse, and I just soar.
00:06:26There's a second down and there's no game.
00:06:31Ampley, number 32.
00:06:35Todd Stusse, who started every offensive down last year as a rookie,
00:06:39going against Haley tonight.
00:06:41He's number 73 there for the Vikings.
00:06:42That's a pretty good block by Stusse.
00:06:45And you mentioned it.
00:06:46Every single play as a rookie has a left tackle.
00:06:49I mean, he learned some valuable lessons.
00:06:50He came to camp this year and told Brian Fiddock, the offensive coordinator,
00:06:53hey, I don't need as much help this year.
00:06:56I'm going to help the other rookies.
00:06:59Second year out of Cal.
00:07:02Third down and nine.
00:07:05No blitz.
00:07:06Moon gets pressure.
00:07:07Fires it.
00:07:08Incomplete.
00:07:09Almost picked off.
00:07:10Larry Brown again.
00:07:11Larry Brown's had a pretty good quarter, Eddie, this far.
00:07:14In the first half, we saw him make some tackles, some physical plays.
00:07:18But the Vikings have been testing Larry Brown this second half,
00:07:21and he has responded.
00:07:24These guys have the cut on the nose the same place, I guess,
00:07:27because they're all wearing band-aids.
00:07:30Everybody's cutting themselves shaving in the same spot.
00:07:32I think they're making a fashion statement.
00:07:34I think you're right.
00:07:36It's hard to get off those things.
00:07:38Mark Saxon.
00:07:40Hey, if Jerry Royce does it, it's in both.
00:07:44Kevin Williams with a counterpunch off the Saxon punt.
00:07:48He's out to the 28-yard line.
00:07:54And time has been called.
00:07:55The Cowboys get it back.
00:07:56They trail by one.
00:07:57It's 10-9, Vikings.

00:08:49Now, about Harris Methodist Health Plan.
00:08:51Look, here's what their members say.
00:08:53More than nine out of ten are satisfied with their doctor's care.
00:08:56More than nine out of ten members are planning to renew.
00:08:59And over the past six years,
00:09:0296% of the companies who joined Harris Methodist Health Plan are still there.
00:09:07Kate, you've done your homework.
00:09:09Well, my health plan, too.
00:09:11♪♪
00:09:16♪♪
00:09:23Jaguars are young, untamed and unknown.
00:09:26That makes them dangerous to big game trackers.
00:09:29Like Reggie White and the Green Bay Tigers.
00:09:33Sunday night, the Jaguars stalk the Packers.
00:09:36But first, TNT wraps up the NFL's busiest day,
00:09:39one hour before the game with post-football tonight.
00:09:41And then, the Packers, the Jaguars.
00:09:44Next Sunday at 8, on TNT.
00:09:49We'll be in Jacksonville next Sunday night.
00:09:51We've still got a full half of football tonight at the Metrodome.
00:09:54Minnesota leads at 10-9.
00:09:56Mike Zimmer, the defensive back coach, talking with Larry Brown and his teammates.
00:10:00Brock Marion on the right side.
00:10:04Well, they have to be satisfied with the opening defensive series of this half.
00:10:09Troy Aikman, 11 of 18 for 108.
00:10:12And a touchdown to Michael Irvin.
00:10:16Irvin's caught five for 71.
00:10:18That's Kevin Williams in motion.
00:10:20Followed by Dwayne Washington.
00:10:24One hopper.
00:10:25Got some pressure that time.
00:10:27And is on the ground.
00:10:30Not injured. Just down.
00:10:32He has had, like, three one hoppers.
00:10:35And that's because of inside pressure.
00:10:37When you can't step up to deliver the ball, you've got that inside push.
00:10:41It's hard to throw the deep outcut.
00:10:43And that's why they've come up short a couple times.
00:10:45Because of some good inside pressure.
00:10:46That time he was Roy Parker.
00:10:48Here's Wade Wilson, who is the backup in Dallas now.
00:10:51And, of course, Wade, the starting quarterback for a number of years.
00:10:55Here at Minnesota.
00:10:58I can't believe they're going to make a change unless Aikman is hurt.
00:11:01Yeah.
00:11:03And it's him.
00:11:04Got down again.
00:11:05Well, they did it to Barry Sanders last week.
00:11:09The thing is, you say, hey, if you shut down Emmitt Smith, we can throw the ball.
00:11:16And you're going to watch right here.
00:11:17You're going to watch Jack Del Rio come right through this hole and make a play.
00:11:21As soon as Del Rio sees the guard leave, he didn't overrun it.
00:11:25See, he didn't overrun it.
00:11:26He was very patient play there by Jack Del Rio.
00:11:29And a good one.
00:11:31And the Cowboys still searching for their first third down conversion of the night.
00:11:36They are over six.
00:11:38They're looking at third and nine.
00:11:40And Jack Del Rio looks at them.
00:11:42Four-man rush, no blitz.
00:11:44Aikman.
00:11:47That will be enough for the first down at the 40-yard line.
00:11:50That's the first conversion of the evening.
00:11:52Yeah, and only the second catch for Jay Novacek tonight.
00:11:57And he's a guy that, you know, over the course of a game can really hurt you.
00:12:02He's on the right side, the tight end over here.
00:12:04That's Jay Novacek.
00:12:05And again, if he can give Troy Aikman some time.
00:12:08Barry Switzer said, if we just protect him, we can eat these guys up.
00:12:11That time, it was pretty good protection.
00:12:14They didn't jam Jay Novacek.
00:12:16And when he does that, he runs free and he catches a lot of balls.
00:12:19First and ten on the Cowboy 40-yard line.
00:12:22Back to the yard.
00:12:25Blitz.
00:12:26Aikman pumps once, goes deep.
00:12:29Good coverage downfield.
00:12:30Almost picked off.
00:12:31They doubled.
00:12:33Michael Irvin and Dwayne Washington and Charles Mincy were in pretty good position.
00:12:38Did you see Emmitt Smith, though?
00:12:40I mean, Emmitt Smith made a heck of a block on the blitzing linebacker.
00:12:44I mean, sometimes you worry about running backs protecting your quarterback on a blitz.
00:12:49But Emmitt is a good blocker.
00:12:52He's a tough football player.
00:12:54He's the Barnett, the strong safety.
00:12:56He destroys him.
00:12:57He just blows him up.
00:13:00And that allows Aikman to follow through this time and get the ball downfield.
00:13:03Now, it was an incompletion.
00:13:05But that pass would have even gotten off had it not been for Emmitt Smith's block.
00:13:09One of those tiny things you sometimes don't notice.
00:13:12Look at the average in the first two games.
00:13:16Here's Smith.
00:13:18Mincy.
00:13:20Roderick Thomas.
00:13:25You're right. They're off, Vern.
00:13:27But to beat the Cowboys, it is a 60-minute ballgame.
00:13:31You can't play them for 56 or 58.
00:13:34You have to play them for 60 minutes.
00:13:36Otherwise, they'll beat you.
00:13:38So, as well as it's gone thus far for Minnesota, I mean, it's a one-point game.
00:13:43And with the weapons that the Cowboys have, if they get in rhythm,
00:13:46they can put up a couple touchdowns quickly.
00:13:49Third and two.
00:13:57Emmitt Smith.
00:14:00Smith.
00:14:01One man to beat.
00:14:06The one man is Corey Fuller, and he tackles Emmitt Smith.
00:14:10But you just knew you couldn't contain him all night long.
00:14:15Well, he got some good blocks right up the middle by Larry Allen,
00:14:19his right guard, number 73, who dominates Randall that time.
00:14:23Ray Donaldson blows his guy away.
00:14:26Almost fumbled that ball. Almost fumbled it.
00:14:29But you keep feeding him the ball.
00:14:31Picked up an extra 8, 10 yards after a very forceful straight arm as well.
00:14:3745-yard game for Emmitt Smith.
00:14:39He's got 81 on 11 carries, and just like that.
00:14:44Backs in the eye. Here's Smith again.
00:14:47This time the penetration comes from the defensive line and linebackers.
00:14:53And Smith is caught for a loss back at the 9-yard line.
00:14:57John Randall. We haven't mentioned him a lot tonight.
00:15:01This is what Emmitt Smith has seen a lot of tonight, Vern.
00:15:05A lot of purple jerseys right when he gets the ball.
00:15:09Ed McDaniel, number 58, gets some help from Randall.
00:15:13And Harlan Barnett, the strong safety.
00:15:16We come to you from the Metrodome in Minneapolis.
00:15:18Here's the campers, Vern Lundquist and Matt Hayden.
00:15:20The Cowboys trailing by one.
00:15:22A missed extra point. The difference, they've got a second to go.
00:15:25Here's Akron Pritchett.
00:15:27This time he gets it down to the 4-yard line.
00:15:34Is he alone?
00:15:36I mean, he should have been stopped about 6 yards prior to where he did.
00:15:41We talked about Johnston doing the subtle things to help you win football games.
00:15:46The man in motion, number 48.
00:15:48It's a simple little pass.
00:15:50The accurate throw allows him to do something with the ball after the catch.
00:15:55If you force the running back to adjust the ball, he can't do anything.
00:15:59When it's a perfect throw, he can do something with the ball after the catch.
00:16:03Third and goal from the three.
00:16:12They were going to try to run that one in.
00:16:15There's Ed Hockley.
00:16:17Timeout Minnesota before the ball was snapped.
00:16:19That's their first charge team timeout.
00:16:25Not sure why they did it, but they did it.
00:16:28We'll be back.
00:16:33We're proud to announce that lease terms on the 1995 Trooper are not only the lowest they've been all year,
00:16:38but at $2.99 a month and zero down, they're really something to think about.
00:16:44Like, how do you actually put zero down?
00:16:46And if you put zero down, how does anyone know you really put it down?
00:16:51And if you wash your pants with zero down in the pocket, will you find it later in the dryer?
00:16:57It's a paradox inside of a riddle wrapped in an enigma.
00:17:02At Riders Jeans and Casual Clothes, we studied hundreds, thousands of regular folks to learn their shapes and sizes.
00:17:20And then designed jeans that give them a great-looking fit.
00:17:25You'll find it's like we knew your size exactly, somehow.
00:17:29Riders Jeans. Cut to make real people look real good.
00:17:32So, the Nittany Lions and the Fighting Irish have given us another great college football game.
00:17:37And here are two tired generals looking for each other at midfield.
00:17:41Tough break, Joe.
00:17:43Yeah, I know. The tie's too much.
00:17:45It's nice, but maybe next time, something in a crew neck.
00:17:48How'd you think that'd be too casual?
00:17:50Collect a Burger King Legends of College Football Cup.
00:17:52Free when you upsize your Whopper value meal for just 39 cents.
00:17:56Look, Joe, it's not the end of the world.
00:17:58Next Cup, thank pastels.
00:18:058.06 to go, third quarter, and the Cowboys facing a third down and three.
00:18:08They got here on the legs of Emmitt Smith, a 45-yard scamper.
00:18:12Gave them a first and goal.
00:18:14They're now looking at third and goal from the three.
00:18:17In a week ago, against Denver, they ran a little pick play,
00:18:20and Darrell Johnson caught the ball out in the right flat and scored on it.
00:18:298.06 to go.
00:18:39Aikman dropped to the goal line.
00:18:42It's fourth down.
00:18:45Coach Fazio.
00:18:48Minnesota defensive assistant looks on.
00:18:51Pretty good play there by Corey Fuller again, Vern.
00:18:54They tested the rookie, and Corey Fuller responded one more time.
00:19:00First, you try to put the pressure on Aikman, but it was very good protection.
00:19:05Throwing darts.
00:19:10And the reaction on the sideline of the Cowboys.
00:19:14Kendall Watkins.
00:19:16Back up tight end.
00:19:18Here's Boniol. He missed the extra point.
00:19:21Whoa!
00:19:23Whoa!
00:19:26Boy.
00:19:31Uh-oh.
00:19:34My goodness.
00:19:36That's two of them.
00:19:38He missed an extra point.
00:19:40Looked like a good snap.
00:19:42It was a good hold.
00:19:44That's on the kicker.
00:19:46That's not the snap for the holder. That's on the kicker.
00:19:50It's still 10-9, Vikings.
00:19:55We're proud to announce that lease terms on the 1995 Trooper are not only the lowest they've been all year,
00:20:01but at $299 a month, and zero down, they're really something to think about.
00:20:06Like, how do you actually put zero down?
00:20:09And if you put zero down, how does anyone know you really put it down?
00:20:13And if you wash your pants with zero down in the pocket, will you find it later in the dryer?
00:20:19It's a paradox inside of a riddle, wrapped in an enigma.
00:20:25Roger, command, target confirmed at 0-5.
00:20:28Located, launching on my mark.
00:20:30This guided missile is brought to you by Ken Norton and his Reebok NFL Pro-Line jacket.
00:20:35It'll remind you that players are made ...
00:20:37in the preseason.
00:20:43How to achieve success.
00:20:45For me, it's the details.
00:20:47In golf, that means taking it one stroke at a time.
00:20:50And at Jiffy Lube, we do it one car at a time.
00:20:54And we offer the quality of Pinswell.
00:20:57So even though we've serviced almost 100 million cars,
00:21:00the one that matters most is the one we're working on now.
00:21:05If it doesn't say Jiffy Lube, it just isn't Jiffy Lube.
00:21:11Time now for the Azuzu Play of the Day.
00:21:14It's courtesy James Hastie of the Chiefs.
00:21:16In the Raiders-Chiefs game at Arrowhead, tied at 17 in overtime,
00:21:20Hastie steps in front of a Jeff Hospitler pass,
00:21:23and he is gonna go 64 yards down the sideline for the game-winning touchdown,
00:21:28the practically amazing Azuzu Play of the Day.
00:21:34Well, right here, the practically amazing Dallas Cowboys have self-destructed.
00:21:38We've had three or four drops, a fumble from Emmitt Smith,
00:21:41and Chris Boniol with a missed extra point and a missed 20-yard field goal.
00:21:4610-9, Minnesota.
00:21:50First-ten Vikings, Warren Moon, will hand it off to Robert Smith.
00:21:56He does have that glider style, doesn't he?
00:21:59He does. And again, because of that, and that long stride in the angular body,
00:22:05people just really, I think they're fooled by his speed.
00:22:08And because of that, they don't take the right angle, and they miss him.
00:22:12He overruns, or people overrun him, or underrun him.
00:22:15And what the Vikings desperately need this year is a runner they can depend upon all season.
00:22:20And tonight, or actually this season, Robert Smith has been that guy.
00:22:23And if they can develop him as a threat, this could be a pretty good Viking team.
00:22:27Smith at 60 yards on 13 carries now, second and one.
00:22:32He goes right.
00:22:35Clayton Holmes.
00:22:38And Dixon Edwards decide to treat him like he's in a rodeo.
00:22:43It's kind of surprising, speaking of Clayton Holmes who made that tackle,
00:22:46that the Vikings really haven't tried working on him.
00:22:49He's a replacement for Kevin Smith.
00:22:52Played very well last week against Denver.
00:22:54John Elway did test him three times. He responded all three.
00:22:58But the Vikings have been working on Larry Brown and not Clayton Holmes.
00:23:01They did get the touchdown off Clayton Holmes.
00:23:04Jake Reed caught it in the first half.
00:23:0710-9, 644 to go.
00:23:10Rob Clay Smith.
00:23:13Robert Smith, the number one draft choice two years ago in 93,
00:23:17suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament late in the rookie season.
00:23:22And so was really limited last year in his year of recovery to third downplays.
00:23:28He then had a contract holdout this summer.
00:23:30Something new in sports.
00:23:33And something unusual.
00:23:35And came in late.
00:23:37But really has played very well in the first three games.
00:23:39Here's Dixon Edwards getting helped off.
00:23:42Robert Smith is kind of an interesting guy.
00:23:44Has a lot of off the field interest as well.
00:23:48There is life outside of football.
00:23:50Knows the difference between a gerund and a participle.
00:23:55Good, he can teach me.
00:23:58That pass is good to the 40.
00:24:01Ampley, number 32.
00:24:03Robert Jones, the middle linebacker.
00:24:05A part of the tackle.
00:24:06You don't know gerunds and participles?
00:24:09I was absent that day.
00:24:10Okay, I wasn't paying attention.
00:24:12And Ampley is kind of the receiver out of the backfield.
00:24:15He has to fight through his own guys.
00:24:17And then find the window to the quarterback.
00:24:19I mean, that's a small little game.
00:24:21But Ampley had to do quite a bit to gain those few yards.
00:24:26Dangling participle.
00:24:42That should be enough for first and ten Minnesota at their own 45.
00:24:46Darren Woodson made the tackle.
00:24:48Hey, we've got five minutes to go in the third quarter.
00:24:51And if you just tune in, Minnesota leads this thing by one.
00:24:55Yeah, and they deserve to lead this thing by one.
00:24:57Because they have played very well.
00:24:59Their defense has played well.
00:25:01And when they've had to have these tough little inside runs,
00:25:04they've either gotten it from Robert Smith or this time Ampley.
00:25:07Breaks an arm tackle.
00:25:11And they convert on another first down.
00:25:13Or they get another first down.
00:25:14And the time of possession becomes more and more of a factor for the Vikings.
00:25:20David Palmer is in the lineup, number 22.
00:25:22They fake the reverse to him.
00:25:25Flips it out to Robert Smith.
00:25:28And it's incomplete.
00:25:31Now let's take a look at the Coors White scoreboard.
00:25:3449ers roll in the second half.
00:25:37Denver.
00:25:38Rod Smith with a great catch off an L-way pass.
00:25:42San Diego.
00:25:44Comes back and defeats Philadelphia.
00:25:46Green Bay wins in a tussle with the Giants.
00:25:51Arizona came up behind to win.
00:25:53A day by Harrison Hurst.
00:25:5522 yards.
00:25:56Biggest day as a pro.
00:25:58Emmitt Smith.
00:26:00Resting for the moment.
00:26:01Second down and 10-9 Minnesota leads.
00:26:05Into the flat front by Andrew Jordan, number 89.
00:26:11And that'll bring up another third down.
00:26:13The Vikings are 6 of 11 on third down conversions tonight.
00:26:17Well, and part of that is because of what they've done in first and second down.
00:26:20They're not getting themselves in a lot of third and longs.
00:26:23I mean, they're dinking the ball here, running the ball there.
00:26:25And to find themselves a lot, I think, in third and four or less.
00:26:29Now here's a third and probably about five or six.
00:26:31But they've won the first and second downs.
00:26:34And that's the big reason.
00:26:36Third and five.
00:26:3710-9 Minnesota.
00:26:41Straight four-man front.
00:26:44Moon back.
00:26:46Hit.
00:26:48Robert Jones, number 55, the middle linebacker.
00:26:51Got a hand up.
00:26:53And that's a good play.
00:26:55Because I think Warren Moon had something going down the middle.
00:26:58That ball was thrown with some velocity.
00:27:00It was thrown with some direction.
00:27:02And Robert Jones, who's 6'2", gets a hand on it.
00:27:06Yeah, he had a hand on it.
00:27:08Gets a hand on it.
00:27:10Boy, that could have been a touch.
00:27:11That could have been a touch to Ampley.
00:27:14Big play by Robert Jones.
00:27:17That brings on Mike Saxon.
00:27:20Kevin Williams waits for the return at the 10-yard line.
00:27:30Mike Saxon leaves the league and busts down inside the 20.
00:27:35It was Brock Marion who almost got there
00:27:39and who is stretched out in an injured position at the 40-yard line.
00:27:44Here's how close Marion came.
00:27:47Time has been called. We'll be right back.
00:27:54Look at him. That's my generation.
00:27:57They call us baby boomers.
00:27:59We lead every generation in American history
00:28:01in such things as power and money and position.
00:28:04We also lead every generation in American history
00:28:07in such things as divorce and suicide,
00:28:10drug abuse and loneliness.
00:28:12Many are finding that the something they've looked for within
00:28:15to fill the void of life is really someone.
00:28:18It's never too late for a new beginning.
00:28:23It's not so much the heat.
00:28:25It's the humidity.
00:28:27Get wet and cool down this summer at J. Pepe's Tex-Mex
00:28:31with happy hour daily from 11 to 7
00:28:34and 5.99 pitchers of margaritas every Monday.
00:28:37And if you're too hot to sleep,
00:28:39we're open late every night with food till midnight
00:28:42and drinks till 2.
00:28:44J. Pepe's hot Tex-Mex in a very cool environment.
00:28:58She's got me going sideways, upside down, in and out.
00:29:02I don't want to hear any details.
00:29:04Oh, come on, chief. I wasn't gonna tell you what's going on.
00:29:07Love is crazy.
00:29:08And TNT turns up the southern charm with two episodes of Bubba
00:29:12every night this week, Monday through Friday.
00:29:14He's quite a hunk.
00:29:16Get a hunk of Vernon Bubba Bubba
00:29:18beginning tomorrow at 6 on TNT.
00:29:24I must admit there are times
00:29:26when I'm a little nervous.
00:29:3610-9 Minnesota, 325 to go third quarter.
00:29:39Sometimes I talk when I shouldn't
00:29:41and sometimes I don't talk when I should.
00:29:44I'm gonna learn.
00:29:45Here's Johnny Lever.
00:29:46I've known John as an assistant coach
00:29:48for four different teams in 15 years.
00:29:51He says the Cowboy offensive line
00:29:53is the best offensive line he's ever seen in the NFL.
00:29:57Pretty good catch.
00:29:59That catch is made at the 24-yard line.
00:30:01John was a coach at New Orleans,
00:30:03the Chicago Bears,
00:30:05most recently with the Denver Broncos.
00:30:07He just came over as the new line coach
00:30:09of the Minnesota Vikings,
00:30:11and before the game he said this offensive line is out.
00:30:14And I think one of them's injured.
00:30:17Gap muscle. That's big Eric Williams.
00:30:20Big is right.
00:30:22All 322 pounds of him.
00:30:28And that is a concern Barry Switzer.
00:30:32Things thus far have not gone the way he'd like.
00:30:35We'll be right back.
00:30:41We're out of here.
00:30:42No, please keep your hands in the cart.
00:30:44We'll come back for that later.
00:30:46That one needs batteries.
00:30:47You're gonna get Daddy in trouble.
00:30:48Excuse me.
00:30:49No, that one definitely has too many parts.
00:30:51We gotta go.
00:31:04Right now we're offering some of the best prices of the year
00:31:06on our 1995 rodeos.
00:31:10I got it, I got it!
00:31:12Daft Rockies!
00:31:15Coors Light!
00:31:18Daft Rockies!
00:31:21Coors Light!
00:31:24Coors Light, the silver bullet.
00:31:26It's shipped cold to tap the clean taste of the Rockies.
00:31:29Daft Rockies!
00:31:32Coors Light!
00:31:39Wow, how'd they do that?
00:31:41Pennzoil introduces Performax 100.
00:31:43100% synthetic at a breakthrough price.
00:31:46100% synthetic at a price this low?
00:31:49How'd they do that?
00:31:50Leave it to Pennzoil to make synthetic affordable.
00:31:53How'd they do that?
00:31:55Hey, there's more.
00:31:56An extra $6 rebate on a case.
00:31:58Or $6 off on an oil change by the pros.
00:32:01How'd they do that?
00:32:03Engine problems?
00:32:04Before you try a tune-up, try gum out first.
00:32:06The solution could be less than $5.
00:32:09This telecast is presented by authority of the National Football League
00:32:12and it is intended for the private use of our audience.
00:32:15Any rebroadcast or other use of this telecast
00:32:17without the express written consent of the Minnesota Vikings
00:32:20and the National Football League is prohibited.
00:32:23Daft Rockies!
00:32:25Now, Beth, they know the difference between a gerund and a partisan belief.
00:32:28That's right.
00:32:29That's probably what they're talking about.
00:32:31Eric Williams.
00:32:33On the sidelines, Juan Stone.
00:32:36On the sidelines, Juan Stone has taken his spot to the 65.
00:32:43To the 25, maybe the 26.
00:32:45It'll be third down, 240 to go.
00:32:47Third quarter, Ed McDaniel, number 58.
00:32:50The Cowboys, as this third quarter winds down,
00:32:53have always been a very good fourth quarter team.
00:32:57And a lot of that is because they've had great depth
00:33:00and they're fresh in the fourth quarter.
00:33:02Some of that depth is gone.
00:33:03And it remains to be seen if they're going to be as good
00:33:06as a fourth quarter team this year.
00:33:08Now, Ron Stone is one of those backups.
00:33:12Torrey Fleming is in on third down and two.
00:33:16Four-man Viking rush.
00:33:18Pass is caught by Novacek to the 35.
00:33:21That's another first down.
00:33:22Well, Ron Stone did his job on Roy Barker that time.
00:33:28I mean, if you don't have, you know,
00:33:3115 guys in offense that can come in and fill in at spots,
00:33:34at tight ends, that's number 65 at Stone.
00:33:37Again, granted, he's just going to push Roy Barker
00:33:39right past the quarterback, but that's all he has to do.
00:33:41Barker's momentum really took him out of the play.
00:33:44Ron Stone, a third-year man from Boston College,
00:33:47a fourth-round draft choice in 93.
00:33:49First and 10, Dallas, after the nine-yard game.
00:33:5210-9, Minnesota.
00:33:54Johnson, a rare moose call.
00:33:58And Nate Newton helps lead the way.
00:34:02Newton, who told us yesterday that he is the sexiest,
00:34:07prettiest 320-pounder in the league.
00:34:10Well, I wasn't going to argue with him.
00:34:12No, nor agree with him.
00:34:14But you know what?
00:34:15Everybody makes fun of his size.
00:34:17He's a very quotable, likable guy,
00:34:19but he's a pretty good football player, too.
00:34:20Yes, he is.
00:34:21He really is.
00:34:22He's part of that offensive line that's been playing together
00:34:25for a long time.
00:34:26Part of this unit that's played together for a long time.
00:34:29Second down.
00:34:31Second and six.
00:34:33Eight-two.
00:34:34Across the middle.
00:34:36Oh, what a sandwich.
00:34:37Man.
00:34:38They popped Novacek pretty good.
00:34:41Harlan Barnett, who played last year in New England,
00:34:44and Charles Mincy, who played last year at Kansas City.
00:34:47Well, Vern, this is only the third game we've done this year,
00:34:50but this is the best defensive effort I have seen this year,
00:34:53and that's by the Minnesota Vikings.
00:34:54I mean, they're shutting down some pretty good weapons
00:34:57of the Cowboys.
00:34:59Emmitt Smith had one big run, but other than that,
00:35:01they've done a pretty good job on Emmitt.
00:35:03They've taken away Novacek.
00:35:05Michael Irvin did catch the touchdown,
00:35:07but he only has six catches.
00:35:08And it's third and six now.
00:35:11Final minute, third quarter.
00:35:15Aikman, right side for Kevin Williams.
00:35:17Incomplete.
00:35:20Corey Fuller, who's done a dandy job at left corner tonight.
00:35:25How about the rookie?
00:35:27He has played great.
00:35:32Never intimidated.
00:35:33Bottom of the screen, number 27.
00:35:36They're going right after him, and they want it all on this play.
00:35:40Stumbles a little bit early in the play.
00:35:43They didn't call that pass interference because they felt it was not catchable.
00:35:46And Kevin Williams has not caught a ball tonight.
00:35:49I think this team right now misses the big plays of Alvin Hartman.
00:35:53John Jett is on the punt.
00:35:57Farmer waits for it.
00:35:59That one sails.
00:36:01Farmer with a fair catch.
00:36:04Huge punt by John Jett.
00:36:07And the Vikings take over following the Farmer fair catch
00:36:10at their own ten-yard line.
00:36:15Right after the game, TNT presents a tribute to a quarterback
00:36:18who led the 49ers to four Super Bowl victories.
00:36:21Watch a special encore presentation of Joe Montana, the fire inside,
00:36:26tonight on TNT.
00:36:30Best I ever saw Joe Montana.
00:36:32I mean, this guy was so good in big games.
00:36:35And I think he measured quarterbacks by the number of championships they win
00:36:39and how many times you bring your team behind, and he did as well as anybody.
00:36:45First and ten, Minnesota.
00:36:47And between us, we've won four Super Bowls.
00:36:50And one round of scholarship.
00:36:55Reed.
00:36:57Wow, somebody got a hand up, and Larry Brown makes the tackle.
00:37:01I thought it was going to be blocked.
00:37:03Jake Reed.
00:37:04That is a first down, Jake.
00:37:06And that's a big play.
00:37:08You know, everybody's so concerned about Chris Carter,
00:37:10you forget that they have another big play receiver on the other side.
00:37:15Hands up with Charles Haley, gets his hands up.
00:37:18But he had Larry Brown beaten early in that route.
00:37:23And he uses his, you know, you have to use your size and position as well.
00:37:27And he did.
00:37:29That's a big play by Jake Reed.
00:37:31They needed him tonight, and he has been there tonight.
00:37:34Reed has caught five.
00:37:36The Vikings lead with a quarter to play.
00:37:39We'll be back in the Mentor Dome after this.
00:37:45Good news for the Chris Hinton family.
00:37:47The injury, the x-rays, rather, were negative.
00:37:50He went to the bench in the locker room in the first half with a knee injury,
00:37:53but looks like he's going to be okay.
00:37:56Chris Hinton, the right guard of the Vikings.
00:37:59His team leads it 10-9 as we start the final quarter.
00:38:02Here's Robinson.
00:38:04There's a tough run of five yards.
00:38:08Eric Williams, strained left calf.
00:38:11He will not return for the remainder of the night.
00:38:14You mentioned Chris Hinton being out.
00:38:16His replacement is Everett Lindsey, and he's playing over Russell Maryland.
00:38:19Now, Dave Campbell, the defensive coordinator for the Cowboys,
00:38:23was saying to us this week that Russell Maryland is his best fourth-quarter player.
00:38:31David Dixon is now in number 71 at right guard.
00:38:38He's an interesting story.
00:38:40Flags are down.
00:38:41Robert Smith out to the 46th.
00:38:43Got the better of Russell Maryland there.
00:38:46There's David Dixon, number 71, Pat, from New Zealand.
00:38:50Came to the States.
00:38:52He was a rugby player.
00:38:53He played at a Mormon school, Rick's College in Idaho,
00:38:57and then transferred down to Arizona State.
00:39:00He hasn't played football all that much.
00:39:02He was on the practice squad of the Cowboys in 1993.
00:39:05As a defensive player.
00:39:06Right.
00:39:07Yeah.
00:39:08David Dixon.
00:39:09Now, he is, as they say, or we are saying more often, yes,
00:39:12he is a gerund and a participle together.
00:39:23A gerund is a verb that acts like a noun and ends in I-N-G.
00:39:27A participle is a verb that acts like an adjective
00:39:29and ends in several suffixes.
00:39:31You are welcome to the continuing education.
00:39:33I just thought you'd be interested.
00:39:38Now you know.
00:39:39Of course, I do.
00:39:40I hope I don't forget because I'll hear about it again.
00:39:43First attempt.
00:39:45Moonwatch goes deep for Reed.
00:39:48Over throws him.
00:39:49Clayton Holmes covering.
00:39:54Jake Reed.
00:39:55There it is.
00:39:56Ah, which is boil, boil, double trouble.
00:40:00Yeah.
00:40:01Right?
00:40:02I see you wanted to know how you make lutefisk.
00:40:04This is it, huh?
00:40:05Well, it's codfish soaked in lye for a long, long time.
00:40:10Then you boil.
00:40:11You put it in ice.
00:40:12You bring it indoors.
00:40:14And what do you do with it?
00:40:15You put a newt's eye in there.
00:40:17And what do you do with it?
00:40:19If you're stupid, you drink it.
00:40:20If you're stupid, you eat it.
00:40:24No thanks.
00:40:27Second attempt.
00:40:33Ah, boy, it'll be third and ten at the 50.
00:40:36Jake Reed's made a lot of big plays tonight, but he probably should have had that one.
00:40:39And one of the few times that the Vikings find themselves in a third and long, a third and ten.
00:40:46And this is where Charles Haley and Tony Tolbert on the outside can really put some heat on the quarterback.
00:40:54So, on third and ten, you better make sure you get Haley blocked.
00:40:58Even if it means keeping it back in the chicken.
00:41:01Todd Stusse goes against Haley.
00:41:03Corey Stringer against Tony Tolbert.
00:41:06Third attempt.
00:41:08Shotgun.
00:41:09They stun.
00:41:10Poor man runs.
00:41:12Moon goes deep with it.
00:41:14Carter overthrows him into the cowboy bench area.
00:41:18The key thing here, Noah, for Mike Saxon, the punter of the Vikings, do not punt this ball in the end zone.
00:41:24You know, you can pin him back there inside the 20 and give your defense good field position.
00:41:29But do not give him a freebie to the 20-yard line.
00:41:33Mike Saxon was a cowboy punter for a long time when he came to the club from San Diego State in 85.
00:41:38He still lives in the Dallas area.
00:41:40Has some golfing buddies up here as a matter of fact.
00:41:43Watching the game.
00:41:48Ten-man front.
00:41:50The cowboys are coming.
00:41:52Saxon.
00:41:53Oh, they got him.
00:41:54They got him.
00:41:55That's going to be rough for the kicker.
00:41:57It goes in the end zone, but it doesn't matter.
00:42:03The cowboys have blocked 13 punts and kicks over the last five years.
00:42:08They really did not take a good angle on that one.
00:42:12If you come up the middle, you got to make sure you're going to block it, Vern,
00:42:16because if you don't, you're going to run into the punter.
00:42:18Joe Avezzano, the special teams coach, said to us last night,
00:42:21we are a special teams unit in a state of transition.
00:42:27Number 87, Billy Davis.
00:42:30And number 42, Charlie Williams.
00:42:33That's only the five-yard variety.
00:42:35Charlie, it's an adolescent penalty and not the adult version,
00:42:38so it will not be a first down.
00:42:41Wow.
00:42:43There's Billy Davis.
00:42:44I thought it was kind of the adult version.
00:42:46I did, too.
00:42:50One guy goes low, another guy comes high.
00:43:00He could have really hurt his left leg there, actually,
00:43:02but they're going to putt it again.
00:43:05And I don't think they'll come after him this time.
00:43:10Mike Saxon.
00:43:13Kevin Williams waits at the 10.
00:43:23That's going to be too far.
00:43:28That's a bad punt.
00:43:29Can't putt at the end zone.
00:43:31That's a bad punt.
00:43:32That gave the Cowboys 20 yards.
00:43:38Well, if you're a lip reader, you know how Mike Saxon feels about it.
00:43:42If you're not a lip reader, you probably know as well.
00:43:45It ain't good news.
00:43:49Lower your right foot and repeat after me.
00:43:52I promise to be free.
00:43:55I promise to be different.
00:43:57I promise to take the other path.
00:44:00I promise to be unique.
00:44:02I promise to drive an Eldorado with a 300-horsepower Northstar V8,
00:44:07a suspension that reads faster than Evelyn Wood,
00:44:10and a body that parts traffic.
00:44:13Eldorado with the Northstar System by Cadillac.
00:44:20Dearly beloved, we have gathered here today.
00:44:23It doesn't have to be.
00:44:26And now the starting lineup.
00:44:28From Texas, Billy Clyde Humphrey.
00:44:30And at pride, a 5'6'' debutant from Alabama, Nell Peterson.
00:44:35The Humphrey Wedding brought to you by Miller Lite.
00:44:37When you've got the great taste of an ice-cold Miller Lite, life is good.
00:44:41The Vows are up.
00:44:42I do. I do.
00:44:43And they're good.
00:44:44Whoa, Nellie!
00:44:46That was beautiful, man.
00:44:5213.32 remaining in this one.
00:44:54Dallas and Minnesota, Week 3, and the Cowboys up 10-9.
00:44:56Missed field goal, missed extra point for Dallas.
00:44:5820-yard field goal, fumble.
00:45:00They've really sputtered offensively, and yet they're only down one.
00:45:03Yeah, and the Cowboys are one of those fourth-quarter teams.
00:45:05You know, you let them hang around for long enough,
00:45:07and they've got enough weapons, they can knock you out.
00:45:09So, you know, you still, even though Evan Smith has struggled,
00:45:12I wouldn't be surprised to give him the ball a bunch of times this fourth quarter
00:45:16and let something good happen.
00:45:17And he's that kind of player.
00:45:18You want to give a guy like that the ball now.
00:45:21Cowboys take over following the Saxon punt at their own 20-yard line.
00:45:25Troy Aikman for the night, 15-27 for 139 yards.
00:45:32One touchdown, he's been sacked only once.
00:45:36Total yardage now, 219 for the Cowboys, 210 for Minnesota.
00:45:41And two big plays, one for either team,
00:45:44a 44-yard run for Robert Smith of the Vikings,
00:45:47a 45-yard run, Emmitt Smith of the Cowboys.
00:45:56Aikman under immense pressure.
00:45:59Wow.
00:46:00Harlan Barnett came on the safety blitz.
00:46:06This is a really good defensive game plan that Tony Dungy has put together, Vern.
00:46:12I mean, they did it last week against one player, Barry Sanders.
00:46:16This week, they've done it against a whole bunch of great players.
00:46:20Aikman, Smith, Johnson, Irvin, J. Novacek.
00:46:25I mean, this is as good a defensive game plan as you're going to see
00:46:28and as well-executed defensive game plan as you're going to see.
00:46:32Second and ten.
00:46:36Blitz is threatened.
00:46:37Aikman, back, left side, caught by Moose Johnson.
00:46:41He's got Donaldson in front and Johnson all the way out to the 45-yard line.
00:46:47And they changed the pace.
00:46:49The Cowboys, for the first time tonight, run a finesse play.
00:46:52I mean, they've been a power team most of this evening.
00:46:54They changed the pace.
00:46:55Ernie Zampezi calls a little screen pass to the left.
00:46:59Perfectly timed.
00:47:01And Darrell Johnston.
00:47:02Watch the thing how he makes the last defender miss, too, Vern.
00:47:05He picks up an extra eight yards, but he kind of jumps over the last defender
00:47:10and picks up an extra eight yards.
00:47:13There.
00:47:14Puts his hand down, and that's a nice play.
00:47:16Very good play.
00:47:1824-yard gain.
00:47:19First and ten.
00:47:20Novacek in motion.
00:47:21Here's Emmitt Smith.
00:47:24What does he do?
00:47:25He breaks a tackle, breaks another, and scoots through for a gain of 14 yards.
00:47:31Devane Washington makes the tackle.
00:47:33They're going to take care of the nose tackle, number 98, Ezra Tuololo.
00:47:38They just double him, destroy the nose tackle, and that allows Emmitt to jump through.
00:47:44Smith combines power and grace, but it's always the power that comes first.
00:47:49Emmitt Smith is now four yards away from his 36th, 37th 100-yard gain.
00:48:02Wides are down.
00:48:03I'll tell you, though, it has been a tough 96 yards thus far.
00:48:07I mean, he's had two big runs, and he's been kind of stuffed 12 other times.
00:48:12Before the ball was snapped, false start by the offense, number 65.
00:48:16The five-yard penalty remains first down.
00:48:19But that's okay.
00:48:20I mean, I think when you talk about Emmitt Smith, great quarterbacks bring their team from behind,
00:48:24and great running backs exert themselves in the fourth quarter.
00:48:27Emmitt Smith has been a great fourth-quarter running back in his career.
00:48:33Chatting with him last night, he's such a fun man to talk to about his art or his craft.
00:48:41And he said he looks at his effort as a painting.
00:48:48Here's the pass to Johnson, and they get it down inside the 45 of the 43.
00:48:54Just to wrap it up about Emmitt, and we'll be talking about him for the rest of the night.
00:48:58But he said he sees his runs as a series of brushstrokes,
00:49:02and then at the end of the night he gets great pleasure when it's gone well to look back at the hole
00:49:07and realize that it is a thing of beauty.
00:49:10That's a rather eloquent way of talking about what he does for a living.
00:49:15He's probably hung up very nice pictures in his den
00:49:19because he's had a bunch of beautiful artwork in his six-year career,
00:49:23and this has been a tough one, but one you will appreciate, too.
00:49:29Eighth and back, play action, blitz coming.
00:49:32They go across the middle.
00:49:33There's another jab, first down at the 28.
00:49:37They are an outstanding fourth-quarter team.
00:49:42And this drive began at the 20 following the Saxon punt.
00:49:47J. Novacek, number 84, no jam, gets off cleanly.
00:49:52If you're going to slow J. Novacek down, you've got to jam him at the line of scrimmage.
00:49:56Nobody does.
00:49:57It's he against McDaniel.
00:50:00It's an athletic catch of a well-thrown ball by Aikman, and the Cowboys are on the move.
00:50:05J. Novacek, four catches, 42 yards.
00:50:07First and 10 at the 28.
00:50:10They fake the toss, and Aikman wants a screen pass left.
00:50:13A flag is down near Novacek.
00:50:15He's got Rogers in front and leads his way inside the 10 to the 5 down at the 1-yard line.
00:50:22Oh, boy, that was a nice play.
00:50:23Second screen, and there are two flags down.
00:50:26The second screen, they've run to their left on this drive,
00:50:29and both of them have worked magnificently.
00:50:33It's going to be a penalty against the Vikings, so they'll have a first down inside the 5.
00:50:39Offside by the defense, number 93.
00:50:41The penalty is declined.
00:50:43First down.
00:50:44They give the Cowboys some credit for adjusting.
00:50:47The fake to the pitch to Emmett.
00:50:49He attracts a crowd.
00:50:51They threw the earlier screen to Johnson, this time to Novacek.
00:50:54You get Michael Irvin screening his guy off, Ray Donaldson powering his guy,
00:50:59and the Cowboys have first and goal.
00:51:01Emmett Smith has rushed for a touchdown in nine consecutive games.
00:51:05That is a Cowboy Club record.
00:51:07The Cowboys have a first and goal at the 2.
00:51:12With Emmett Smith to deep back.
00:51:17Smith.
00:51:19Touchdown, Dallas.
00:51:20Make it 10 games in a row.
00:51:25They're going to go for 2.
00:51:26I think they should go for 2 here.
00:51:30You know, he was upset ever since he fumbled the ball in this football game.
00:51:35Fumbled on Emmett Smith.
00:51:37But he atoned for it here in the fourth quarter, where he's been a dominant player during his career.
00:51:46That offensive line, this is where you need guys to stay low, just give you a little freeze.
00:51:51A good lead block by Johnson.
00:51:54And even though he gets hit, he didn't take the clean shot, spin in midair,
00:51:59and gets the ball in the end zone.
00:52:00And now they go for 2.
00:52:03Cowboys have never converted a two-point play.
00:52:13Smith in motion.
00:52:17Now they have.
00:52:18Boy, is that a good throw.
00:52:20And a good catch.
00:52:23This guy was covered.
00:52:25Novacek was covered.
00:52:27And it starts with a touchdown.
00:52:30They gave him the chance, the two-point play.
00:52:32A great fourth-quarter drive where the Cowboys have always been tough.
00:52:38And the Cowboys have a 17-10 lead.
00:52:43He was cool and uncanny.
00:52:45But with one tick left on the clock, Joe Montana was the comeback kid.
00:52:49He started young, hating to lose.
00:52:51Joe Montana, the fire inside.

00:54:15Hey, I wanna make movies you gotta see.
00:54:18When it comes to movies you gotta see, it doesn't get any better than this.
00:54:21And you can only see them on TNT.
00:54:24Starting Tuesday night at 8.
00:54:31Galvoys go 80 yards in seven plays.
00:54:34It took only three minutes and 35 seconds.
00:54:37Emmitt Smith gets the touchdown and he is now scored 77 rushing touchdowns in 80 games.
00:54:42Take a look at the rushing ratio.
00:54:45Jim Brown had 106 and 118.
00:54:48Emmitt's in that category.
00:54:50Walter Payton, of course, the leader with 110 in 190 games.
00:54:55Here's the kick by John Baker.
00:54:57Galvoys up by seven.
00:54:59David Palmer at the five.
00:55:03Watch out!
00:55:05Watch out!
00:55:08He was kind of fun to watch, isn't he?
00:55:14Let's go back to the two-point play, because I think this is a remarkable throw and a great catch by Jay Novacek.
00:55:19Now he is covered.
00:55:20Right there, he's gonna be in the middle of your screen right now.
00:55:24He's covered by Roger Thomas.
00:55:26And the ball was thrown away from the defender.
00:55:28He caught it all hands.
00:55:30That is pretty good.
00:55:32That's throwing darts.
00:55:34And that's catching a pass when you're well covered.
00:55:37And that's two points for the Cowboys.
00:55:47Out of the backfield with the catch at the 41.
00:55:49That's a two-yard pickup.
00:55:51And the defensive job done by Robert Jones.
00:55:54I think this is an important part of the game for the Vikings.
00:55:57I mean, everybody knows how good the Cowboys are.
00:56:00But the Vikings are in that mass of teams in the NFC.
00:56:03They're trying to prove themselves.
00:56:05And being able to come back against the Cowboys right now,
00:56:08I think would give them a big lift for the rest of the season.
00:56:11And be a real, could be, one of those turning points.
00:56:24Just behind him.
00:56:27In front of Clayton Holmes.
00:56:31It'll be third down and eight.
00:56:36Twice now in this fourth quarter, Vern,
00:56:38they've gotten themselves in third and long.
00:56:40First three quarters, they weren't in third and long.
00:56:42But twice this time, they have.
00:56:44In this half, only 25 yards on the ground for the Vikings.
00:56:47Only 45 yards passing the ball.
00:56:49They led 10-9 at the half.
00:56:51Total of 82 yards now.
00:56:53That's current.
00:56:55And you see Dallas is going up to 175 yards.
00:56:59In this half.
00:57:00Third and eight.
00:57:01Foreman rush.
00:57:03Moon, right side for Reed.
00:57:06And again, pretty good coverage by Clayton Holmes.
00:57:09His coaching staff says Clayton Holmes is the best athlete on the ball club.
00:57:16Boy, did Tony Tolbert get a hold of Warren Moon.
00:57:20I mean, one of the reasons Clayton Holmes was able to cover Jake Reed that time,
00:57:26and do it pretty well,
00:57:27is because of the rush of Tony Tolbert.
00:57:29But, you know, Elway tested Holmes three times deep last week.
00:57:34Didn't really convert.
00:57:36They test him here.
00:57:37That's pretty good coverage again by Clayton.
00:57:39Mike Saxon on to punt.
00:57:41The return is on all the way.
00:57:43Saxon.
00:57:44Kevin Williams at 22.
00:57:52Nice return.
00:57:54Maybe should have punted in the end zone.
00:57:578.45 remaining in this one.
00:58:00And the Cowboys have assumed command.
00:58:03They are up by seven.
00:58:09Only one has the moves of Barry Sanders.
00:58:14Only one has his acceleration.
00:58:19Only one has his control.
00:58:21Only one has such breathtakingly perfect balance.
00:58:27Seville STS with the North Star System.
00:58:30A great performer creates a higher standard.
00:58:52Over 25 years ago, Honda built the first ATV.
00:58:57Now we've built our most powerful, the Foreman 400.
00:59:02Where do we go from here?
00:59:04Just about anywhere we want.
00:59:14At Riders Jeans and Casual Clothes,
00:59:16we studied hundreds, thousands of regular folks
00:59:19to learn their shapes and sizes.
00:59:24And then designed jeans that give them a great looking fit.
00:59:29You'll find it's like we knew your size exactly, somehow.
00:59:33Riders Jeans.
00:59:34Cut to make real people look real good.
00:59:388.45 remaining in regulation play.
00:59:40You see one of the number of NFL Films photographers
00:59:44documenting what's going on in this game.
00:59:46They began their efforts in both Dallas and Minneapolis
00:59:49earlier this week for a special 90-minute show
00:59:52that'll be called Six Days to Sunday.
00:59:54It'll air on TNT on November 8th.
00:59:57They've had complete access to both the ball clubs.
01:00:01And I think Denny Green is mic'd during the game.
01:00:04I'm not sure if Barry Switzer is.
01:00:06That'll air November 8th, 1st and 10th.
01:00:11Dallas Aikman.
01:00:16Michael Irvin.
01:00:18And here's where the Cowboy offensive line, I think,
01:00:21can make the difference in the ball game.
01:00:23Both in the pass protection, as they did there for Aikman,
01:00:26and in running the ball for Emmitt Smith.
01:00:28This is the time when this offensive line can worry you down.
01:00:33Good cut block there by Ron Stone.
01:00:36Allowed the ball to get unimpeded to Michael Irvin.
01:00:40Michael with 7 catches from 84 yards now.
01:00:43Closing in on a 100-yard break.
01:00:46That's in the open.
01:00:49Emmitt Smith.
01:00:53He's gone over 100 again.
01:00:58Ed McDaniel with a tackle.
01:01:00A good trap block there.
01:01:02Real good trap block by Larry Allen, the right guard.
01:01:07What he doesn't see, he feels.
01:01:11He just has a great sense of where people are,
01:01:13where his guys are, where the enemy is,
01:01:16and that's what makes him a sensational back.
01:01:20The best running back in football today.
01:01:23Third straight 100-plus game.
01:01:26He's got 109.
01:01:32Aikman Chase.
01:01:36John Randle.
01:01:42They get a big play on defense.
01:01:44They need a turnover.
01:01:49Number 93 beats Nate Newton quickly.
01:01:52It's a speed rush.
01:01:54And once he gets the speed rush going, look out.
01:01:57I mean, Nate Newton had a pretty good day so far against John Randle,
01:02:01but that time John Randle just blew right by him.
01:02:04That's a loss of 8.
01:02:05It's 2nd down and 18.
01:02:06It's the 2nd sack of the season for Troy Aikman.
01:02:102nd tonight.
01:02:13Irvin and Fleming are in.
01:02:171st, 2nd and 18.
01:02:18Vikings!
01:02:21Viking football.
01:02:22We said at the very beginning of this show,
01:02:25the Vikings needed 2 or 3 defensive turnovers to win it.
01:02:29Tony Dungy teams create turnovers.
01:02:33Now that ball was just a mishandled snap,
01:02:36but nonetheless, the Vikings come up with their 2nd turnover again.
01:02:40I don't think Aikman ever touched that ball.
01:02:42It went right through his hands.
01:02:44Ray Donaldson hiked it right through Troy Aikman's hands.
01:02:49See that?
01:02:50Never hit him.
01:02:51That was a strange snap.
01:02:54Very strange.
01:02:55And Del Rio comes up with it.
01:02:58That's the 2nd turnover for the Minnesota Viking defense.
01:03:03They trail by 7.
01:03:04They have the ball with the Cowboys.
01:03:0648.
01:03:10Robert Smith starts right, comes back inside,
01:03:13and runs into Tony Talbert, number 92.
01:03:17Boy, has he been good as a coordinator here.
01:03:21Look what's happened since 1992 when Tony came here.
01:03:2517 defensive touchdowns over the past 3 seasons.
01:03:30Interceptions, sacks, takeaways.
01:03:33It's incredible.
01:03:35Absolutely incredible.
01:03:37Someday there will be a head coaching job.
01:03:39Yeah, open for him.
01:03:41And it's no accident that that's good coaching and good playing.
01:03:44James Harris, 99, gets credit for the FOMO recovery
01:03:47in 2nd down and 9.
01:03:496.25 to go.
01:03:52Warren Lerner comes right.
01:03:54Caught and dropped.
01:03:55Charles Haley.
01:03:58Tough time to take a sack.
01:04:002nd sack tonight for Haley.
01:04:02Yeah, down by 7 points.
01:04:04And you go from 2nd and 10.
01:04:06If you throw your ball away to 3rd and forever,
01:04:09and you have to account for him.
01:04:12You have to know where he is, and you have to double team him.
01:04:15That was a single block it looked like on Charles Haley.
01:04:18And he is a sack waiting to happen.
01:04:21It's Stusie.
01:04:23Gets the single on him.
01:04:24And that's not good.
01:04:25Like a good running back, Charles Haley.
01:04:26Just kind of gave him a hit, took it away.
01:04:28Takes the sack.
01:04:293rd and 19.
01:04:305.55 to go.
01:04:37That was just furious pressure from Leon Lett and friends.
01:04:42You're right, and it was friends.
01:04:44First you take care of Charles Haley.
01:04:46This time they double teamed him with Stusie in the back.
01:04:49Tony Tolbert is going to raise some havoc first.
01:04:52And then he gets some help from Leon Lett.
01:04:54There's Tolbert.
01:04:56Lett finishes him off.
01:04:59But it started because of the concern with Haley.
01:05:021 on 1 on Tolbert.
01:05:031 on 1 on Lett.
01:05:04The result, a sack.
01:05:07And nothing out of the turnover created on the missed snap.
01:05:10Here's Saxon.
01:05:11Here's Saxon.
01:05:12That's another returnable punt.
01:05:17Kevin Williams at the 21.
01:05:22He's knocked out of bounds at the 25-yard line by Robert Griffith, number 24.
01:05:28They were looking for a block on the back.
01:05:31I thought it was maybe Anthony Fieldings, number 54 for Dallas.
01:05:38Right there.
01:05:41That is a block in the back.
01:05:43It should have been a penalty against Fieldings.
01:05:45Time has been called.
01:05:51What you see here is a busy business traveler getting a new telephone.
01:05:55That's because he's staying at Courtyard by Marriott,
01:05:58where when you apply for a new AT&T True Choice calling card,
01:06:02you'll be sent an AT&T Design Line phone.

01:07:15So come to Pep Boys and drive away happy.
01:07:215.35, remaining in regulation play.
01:07:23The Minnesota Vikings and Warren Moon find themselves trailing by a touch.
01:07:27And they've not had much offensive success the last seven times they've had the ball.
01:07:32A lot of Mike Saxon. A lot of punks.
01:07:35And a missed quadruple-phase field goal that ended his streak of 31 in a row.
01:07:40Here's Emmitt Smith.
01:07:42Moves it out from the 25-yard line to the 28-yard line.
01:07:46That's his 17th carry.
01:07:49The rushing leader.
01:07:51He was talking with us yesterday.
01:07:53We had an engaging conversation with Emmitt because we laid down ground rules.
01:07:57No Deion Sanders. No discussion of the hamstring.
01:08:00And no mention of November 12th when they play the 49ers.
01:08:03He said, folks, I got an hour.
01:08:07He's coming. He is coming.
01:08:21Vern, you know you're a good football team when you can run the ball when the defense expects it.
01:08:26And the Cowboys have been able to do that.
01:08:28They won two of their games last year in the fourth quarter.
01:08:31We talked about them being a good fourth-quarter team.
01:08:34And the best fourth-quarter runners right there.
01:08:37Actually, they won three in the fourth quarter last year.
01:08:42What's Ernie doing?
01:08:43There's some concern here.
01:08:44He's nervous.
01:08:46I think that may be a cigarette.
01:08:48Oh, there it is.
01:08:51Do I know Zampezi?
01:08:52Oh, you know smokers.
01:08:54I used to be one.
01:08:55Used to be one.
01:08:58Third and four.
01:09:00That was an extra long.
01:09:03Oh, that might be a free one.
01:09:05Now it's a stub.
01:09:13They're going to get Larry Allen, I think.
01:09:15False start. Prior to the snap by the offense, number 73.
01:09:18Five yards penalty. It remains third down.
01:09:22You're going to see.
01:09:23What happens, you want to point first in this thing.
01:09:26When this happens, you've got to start pointing first.
01:09:28Barker got the first point in.
01:09:30And the hang-dog look there of Larry Allen.
01:09:32When you've got that hang-dog look, you know you're guilty.
01:09:36Larry Allen from Sonoma State developed a hang-dog look out there.
01:09:42Third and nine.
01:09:44Four-ten to go in regulation.
01:09:50It's in into the flat for Emmitt Smith.
01:09:52The way in Washington.
01:09:53It'll be fourth down. The Vikings will get it back.
01:10:03Well, we're going to have a pretty good finish to this thing.
01:10:06Again, a good pass rush.
01:10:09Good coverage because it was third and long.
01:10:11And it forced Aikman.
01:10:13They forced Aikman to dump the ball off to Emmitt Smith.
01:10:17And as good as Emmitt is, that's what you want to have happen on third and very long.
01:10:21A pass in the flat.
01:10:23David Palmer back to return the John Jeff punt.
01:10:38Nice and high.
01:10:40Fair catch call by Palmer.
01:10:42Grabs it at the 44-yard line.
01:10:44So the Minnesota Vikings have three minutes and 14 seconds left.
01:10:49And they find themselves 56 yards away from tying this one up or going in front.
01:10:55Well, we called it a measuring stick game for the Vikings.
01:10:59And you have an experienced quarterback on Warren Moon who's done this before.
01:11:03And if you don't think Warren Moon is a good player,
01:11:06look at the collapse of the Oilers last year after he left.
01:11:09I mean, it kind of proves how long he carried that team.
01:11:13But right now, second year with a new team, 3-14 left.
01:11:16We've got to get the ball in the end zone.
01:11:17We've got to stick it in the end zone.
01:11:20From the 44, first and 10.
01:11:22Amp Lee is in the backfield.
01:11:24He is the pass-receiving specialist.
01:11:36Oh, boy.
01:11:37Brock Marion battling Jake Reed and knocked it away.
01:11:41They had three guys on Charles Haley that time, including Chris Carter.
01:11:45And they had Stusey.
01:11:47They had Carter.
01:11:48Watch.
01:11:49And then they had a tight end.
01:11:51And he still gets through them.
01:11:53I mean, that is one determined pass rush.
01:11:57And Tony Tolbert was also in the vicinity.
01:12:00Yeah.
01:12:01Number 92, second down and 10.
01:12:11Tony Tolbert.
01:12:12Well, they read that one early.
01:12:14You hear the defensive guys calling, draw, draw, draw.
01:12:16Russell Maryland.
01:12:18Yeah, the fourth-quarter player, Russell Maryland.
01:12:23Coming up next, the Steel postgame report.
01:12:25We'll have scores and highlights from all the third-week action
01:12:28around the National Football League.
01:12:30Ben Cellini and Mark May have the stories covered,
01:12:32and Ernie Johnson is with us.
01:12:34He'll have tonight's stars from Minneapolis.
01:12:36And with 2.40 remaining in the ballgame,
01:12:39I think the Vikings have to think about,
01:12:41hey, they have two downs to pick up this 10-yard.
01:12:43You don't necessarily need to get it all right here.
01:12:50More man rush.
01:12:53Reid almost broke it open.
01:12:57First down at the 34.
01:13:00Boy, has he had a good game.
01:13:02His sixth catch of the afternoon and evening for Reid.
01:13:0887 yards.
01:13:09He's caught a touchdown.
01:13:11And that was a perfect read and throw by Moon.
01:13:17It's R-E-A-D, not R-E-E-D.
01:13:19I gotcha.
01:13:21That's good offense.
01:13:24O-F-F-E-N-S-E.
01:13:27Time has been called.
01:13:29D-I-M-E.
01:13:33Rarely does someone go where no one has gone before.
01:13:39Rarely does someone accomplish what has never been accomplished before.
01:13:46Rarely does an automotive system achieve a combination of advantages never achieved before.
01:13:53But when it does, the world tries to follow.
01:13:57The Northstar System by Cadillac.
01:14:00Creating a higher standard.
01:14:03A bowling ball.
01:14:05A pineapple.
01:14:06An apple.
01:14:08A birthday cake.
01:14:10A Nokia cellular phone.
01:14:13One of these objects wouldn't make it easier for me to juggle my schedule.
01:14:21He's a juggler. You're not.
01:14:23Pick up a Nokia cellular phone to help you juggle your schedule.
01:14:28Nokia. Largest European cellular phone manufacturer now in America.
01:14:33No matter where I park, it draws a crowd.
01:14:35It's a 55!
01:14:36It's a 55.
01:14:3755.
01:14:3955.
01:14:40This is one of the last real classics of our time.
01:14:43What do you think of the bumper, huh?
01:14:44Everything's original.
01:14:45And I take care of it myself right down to the oil and the purolator filter.
01:14:48Pure oil now.
01:14:50It's a 55!
01:14:51So when someone asks me how I've kept up the engine, I just show them the purolator.
01:14:54Pure oil later.
01:14:56I don't think it all fit.
01:14:58Legends live.
01:15:0055!
01:15:01Pure later.
01:15:03Two minutes remaining in this one.
01:15:04Warren Moon and the Vikings have a first down and ten at the 34 of Dallas.
01:15:08They used a timeout earlier, so they have two remaining.
01:15:13The Cowboys back home against Arizona next week.
01:15:16The Vikings' tough road continues.
01:15:18They go on to Pittsburgh.
01:15:19They're hoping to go in with a victory.
01:15:21And they need a touchdown.
01:15:27Now the guy's looking for himself on television.
01:15:29And he doesn't realize he's already been on.
01:15:33David Palmer is in at wide receiver.
01:15:37Wide to the right side.
01:15:38This is Chris Carter in motion.
01:15:40Again, a four-man rush.
01:15:42They go deep left side.
01:15:44They catch Larry Brown.
01:15:45It's interference.
01:15:46No flags?
01:15:47No.
01:15:48Wow!
01:15:51Whoa!
01:15:52Unless Larry Brown had his head turned, it looked like interference.
01:15:56But he has his head turned, and he called incidental contact.
01:15:59Watch Larry Brown.
01:16:01This was a good matchup.
01:16:02He sent a guy in motion.
01:16:06No, that's not.
01:16:07That's good defense.
01:16:08Yeah, it sure is.
01:16:09Jake Reed had a little claw action there.
01:16:11He got his head turned.
01:16:12Yeah, right there.
01:16:13There's the claw.
01:16:14Put on the Drew Pearson on him, wasn't he?
01:16:16They're paying him back after 20 years.
01:16:18It's Nate Wright and Drew Pearson.
01:16:201975.
01:16:21Take off the leisure suits.
01:16:26I noticed.
01:16:27Second and ten.
01:16:29Left side.
01:16:30Part of the 33.
01:16:31It'll be third down.
01:16:34Dixon Edwards with the tackle.
01:16:36Again, Bert, in that third down situation where you'd like to get the first down,
01:16:40but you don't have to.
01:16:41You don't have to.
01:16:42Third about six.
01:16:45But if and when they get an X first down,
01:16:48I think they want to take a couple shots at the end zone
01:16:50because it gets very, very difficult to score on the Cowboys inside the 25.
01:16:5686 seconds to go.
01:16:58Third and six.
01:17:05Moon.
01:17:06What a pass!
01:17:08What a dandy pass!
01:17:10Moon to Reed.
01:17:11That's beautiful.
01:17:14Dandy, beautiful, whatever you want to call it.
01:17:17That was absolutely spectacular.
01:17:20Clutch play.
01:17:23Battling the Cowboys.
01:17:25Knowing Haley's coming in on you.
01:17:27You know Haley's going to get single block.
01:17:29And he finds the big old 6'3 Jake Reed,
01:17:33a perfectly thrown ball in between two defenders
01:17:36working on Larry Brown as they have this second half.
01:17:41Still running.
01:17:4240 seconds to go.
01:17:44First and goal from the 10.
01:17:48How about that?
01:17:49Now will they use the timeout?
01:17:51Timeout, yes.
01:17:53Well, I don't like to see that play.
01:17:55You know, I just don't think they're going to run it in from there, Vernon.
01:17:58Now they have three downs left.
01:18:00I would have much rather seen them use the timeout early before that play
01:18:04and then take four throws in the end zone if necessary.
01:18:07Because the key players are Jake Reed and Chris Carter.
01:18:10It's not that run from that far out.
01:18:14Yeah, they tried a little deception with the draw play on first and 10.
01:18:17Brian Billick, Chris Carter.
01:18:19See, Carter just said to Billick, I could run a fade.
01:18:25The fade route is when you get bump and run
01:18:27and just kind of run by him, you throw the jump ball.
01:18:29Chris Carter's made a living running the fade route.
01:18:31He has.
01:18:32He's about as good at that, or was and has been, as anybody in the league.
01:18:37Well, you know, he's one of those great loose ball receivers.
01:18:41You know, you throw it up and he's going to have a pretty good chance
01:18:43of going up and getting it.
01:18:45Now the Cowboys know that too.
01:18:47I mean, the Cowboys and Dave Campbell, the defensive coordinator.
01:18:50Here's Dave Campbell.
01:18:51You're going to take Chris Carter away.
01:19:03But you know what?
01:19:04Again, if you're the Dallas Cowboys, the first guy you're looking at
01:19:08is Chris Carter.
01:19:09Force someone else to be a juggler.
01:19:10Jake Reed has done a great second half.
01:19:14Watch for Carter in the fade.
01:19:18There's the fade.
01:19:19There's Chris Carter.
01:19:21Touchdown!
01:19:23Oh, man!
01:19:29Well, he came to the sideline and we saw him say to Brian Billick,
01:19:33I can run a fade.
01:19:35And that was the little fade adjustment.
01:19:37They got the bump and run, the good throw.
01:19:41They gave him the chance.
01:19:42You give great players a chance at big moments,
01:19:45and oftentimes they come through.
01:19:47And Chris Carter has been doing that virtually his entire career.
01:19:50On Clayton Holmes, you see the bump and run?
01:19:54So he fakes the fade and then he kind of works his way outside.
01:20:00And that's a great catch and a clutch catch.
01:20:03And they'll go for one in the tie.
01:20:05Mike Morris is the center.
01:20:07Mike Saxon is the holder.
01:20:09Claude Revais will try and tie it up.
01:20:12Wow.
01:20:13That was one clutch drop.
01:20:16Great pass.
01:20:17Moon to Reed.
01:20:18Terrific pass.
01:20:19Moon to Carter.
01:20:21Saxon to hold.
01:20:23Mike Morris snaps it.
01:20:25This is from the top.
01:20:29We're notched at 17.
01:20:33There were two overtime games today in the NFL.
01:20:36New Orleans, Atlanta, and the Raiders, and the Chiefs.
01:20:43And here's the pass.
01:20:44You're right.
01:20:45This was a real good throw.
01:20:47The one to Jake Reed was even better than the play earlier.
01:20:50But that's a heck of a catch.
01:20:52That's not a bad catch at all.
01:20:56Not bad coverage, but sometimes you're just going to get beaten.
01:21:01And Warren Moon threw it away from the defender,
01:21:04and Chris Carter made an adjustment while the ball was in the air.
01:21:07That's fun to watch.
01:21:09That is fun to watch.
01:21:10He's kind of a low-key guy, isn't he?
01:21:13Cut from the Philadelphia Eagles, where he played for Buddy Ryan.
01:21:16He told us again yesterday that Buddy Ryan did him a favor.
01:21:20He bears no ill will.
01:21:21He said he grew up a lot after he was released.
01:21:24He had no place to go.
01:21:25He signed in Minnesota, thought it was going to go well here.
01:21:28They told him it was going to go well.
01:21:30First thing they did was put him behind Anthony Carter.
01:21:33And he was told at one time by coaching staff that he's no longer here.
01:21:37As long as Hassan Jones and Anthony Carter were here, he would not be a starter.
01:21:41Now he is.
01:21:42122 coach catches last year, and he's got five tonight and the touchdown for the time.
01:21:48And that touchdown, though, that opportunity was set up because of Jake Reed.
01:21:52Right.
01:21:53The big night that Jake Reed has had,
01:21:55and they couldn't double Chris Carter on that play.
01:21:5830 seconds to go on regulation.
01:22:00Brock Merriam, Kevin Williams are deep.
01:22:02Quadreves.
01:22:06We'll kick it off.
01:22:07And he launches one.
01:22:10He launches one.
01:22:13Oh, boy.
01:22:15You know, I was just going to say, because Kevin Williams last year returned two kicks for touchdowns.
01:22:22So the launch was needed there.
01:22:2430 seconds to go.
01:22:26Aikman.
01:22:30Well, they have three timeouts remaining.
01:22:33And 30 seconds.
01:22:34And you wonder how Barry Switzer is going to play this.
01:22:38Because Barry Switzer this year is the pitcher of record.
01:22:41Last year he was kind of filling in.
01:22:43But he is the pitcher of record, and it's his decision now.
01:22:46Do you play in the overtime, or do you give your experienced players a chance with the touchdown?
01:22:51Do you play in the overtime, or do you give your experienced players a chance with 30 seconds and three timeouts?
01:22:55He said the second year is a lot easier than the first.
01:22:58He's adjusted to his players, and they to him.
01:23:02First down and 10.
01:23:04Screen pass.
01:23:06Oh, Emmitt Smith is wrapped up and dropped with the 15.
01:23:09Jack Del Rio, the one-time cowboy.
01:23:14Now I think they're going to let the time go.
01:23:16Yeah, absolutely.
01:23:17You know, you can fool Jack Del Rio once, and maybe you fool him twice, because they did on two screen plays.
01:23:23But on the third one, you don't.
01:23:26And Roger Thomas, I think, was a part of that as well.
01:23:31We're going to overtime.
01:23:34These two teams came into the NFL.
01:23:36They were awarded the franchises in 1959.
01:23:39The Cowboys played first in 1960.
01:23:43Minnesota started its play in 1961.
01:23:46The first game the Vikings ever played was an exhibition game against the Dallas Cowboys in Sioux City, Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
01:23:554,000 people showed up.
01:23:57We've got 60,000 on hand tonight.
01:24:01They've seen a little bit of everything.
01:24:03I mean, they've seen some good defense.
01:24:05They've seen some real good special teams.
01:24:07I mean, some good plays, some bad plays.
01:24:10It's been an entertaining night for football fans here in Minneapolis.
01:24:14Jack Del Rio and Billy Bates.
01:24:17One guy's got blood on his elbow.
01:24:19The other guy's got sweat all over him.
01:24:21And even though they're playing indoors, it looks pretty good.
01:24:31The Cowboys win the toss.
01:24:35They will receive.
01:24:40We're going to commercial.
01:24:41Commercial.
01:24:42And then we're coming back and going into overtime.
01:24:4417-all.
01:24:48Lower your right foot and repeat after me.
01:24:51I promise to be free.
01:24:53I promise to be different.
01:24:56I promise to take the other path.
01:24:59I promise to be unique.
01:25:01I promise to drive an Eldorado with a 300-horsepower Northstar V8.
01:25:06A suspension that reads faster than Evelyn Wood.
01:25:09And a body that parts traffic.
01:25:12Eldorado with the Northstar System by Cadillac.
01:25:19Dearly beloved, we have gathered here today.
01:25:22It doesn't have to be.
01:25:25And now, the starting lineup.
01:25:27That groom from Texas, Billy Clyde Humphrey.
01:25:30And at bride, a 5'6'' debutante from Alabama, Nell Peterson.
01:25:34The Humphrey wedding brought to you by Miller Lite.
01:25:36When you've got the great taste of an ice-cold Miller Lite, life is good.
01:25:40The vows are up.
01:25:41I do.
01:25:42I do.
01:25:43And they're good.
01:25:44Whoa, Nelly!
01:25:45That was beautiful, man.
01:25:48How do you know if something is fruit?
01:25:51Well, is it wholesome?
01:25:54Is it natural?
01:25:57What about variety?
01:26:00Is it homegrown?
01:26:02Is it sweet?
01:26:05Is it fresh?
01:26:10Did you wash it?
01:26:12Then it's fruit.
01:26:13Fruit of the loom.
01:26:14Always in season.
01:26:20Back under glass in downtown Minneapolis, Dallas and Minnesota, 17-17.
01:26:25Two timeouts per team, and the first team to score wins the ballgame.
01:26:31This is the third time these two teams have gone into overtime.
01:26:34Dallas won at 16-10 in 1977.
01:26:37The Vikings won at 44-38 in 1988.
01:26:40We looked at the touchdown a couple times, Chris Carter, but here's what set it up.
01:26:44A throw under duress, as good a throw as you can possibly make.
01:26:48Catch by Jake Reed.
01:26:50Carter came off and said, I can run the fade.
01:26:53I can run the fade.
01:26:54He ran the fade.
01:26:55He scored.
01:26:56Tie ballgame.
01:26:57Extra point by Ravese, with 30 seconds to go.
01:27:00Warren Moon composed.
01:27:01Yeah, really.
01:27:04Michael Irvin composed for Michael.
01:27:06That's right.
01:27:07That's the way he always is.
01:27:12These two teams, as we said, came into the league 35 and 36 years ago.
01:27:17Dallas leads the overall series 11-7, and the Cowboys have only lost in Minnesota twice in all their years.
01:27:27If I'm the Vikings, I'm trying to kick the ball away from Kevin Williams.
01:27:33Don't let Kevin Williams beat you this early in overtime.
01:27:38Well, Quadravales got the touchback last time out, a 72-yard kick.
01:27:44This is a good one, but it will be returned.
01:27:47Williams at the 4.
01:27:51Out to the 26.
01:27:52All in all, pretty good coverage.
01:27:54Yep.
01:27:56And Troy Aikman and Emmitt Smith and the Dallas Cowboys come back on the field.
01:28:03Well, we talked about Aikman.
01:28:05He can struggle some, as he has tonight.
01:28:08This has not been his best performance, but with one play, he can end the game.
01:28:13I mean, he has that kind of ability.
01:28:15He's that tough, and he doesn't get discouraged.
01:28:18And he doesn't get discouraged.
01:28:22Eric Williams on the bench with a full calf muscle.
01:28:25Juan Stone at right tackle.
01:28:27The rest of the offensive line remains intact.
01:28:30And Aikman will throw.
01:28:32Deep right side, Michael Irvin.
01:28:36Just like that.
01:28:38And again, you know, the toughness of Troy Aikman.
01:28:41I mean, he just was under duress again and took a shot.
01:28:44I mean, he is part flannel suit, or shirt, and part tuxedo.
01:28:49I mean, he can be tough, and he can be classy and play with finesse.
01:28:53And very few guys can do this.
01:28:55I think you just composed a country-western song.
01:28:57Did I?
01:28:58Part flannel shirt, part tuxedo.
01:29:00Lyle Lovett will put it to music next week.
01:29:03Maybe, maybe.
01:29:06First and ten at the 49.
01:29:14Aikman left side.
01:29:17At the feet of Daryl Johnson.
01:29:24You know, for the Cowboys, they have to be concerned a little bit about the kicker, Chris Bonio.
01:29:29I mean, missed an extra point, missed a very short field goal.
01:29:34And now he may be in a situation to win the football game.
01:29:37He's had one in his career a year ago against Cincinnati.
01:29:41John Baker is the kickoff specialist.
01:29:43Bonio has been suffering from a strained quadricep muscle.
01:29:48I don't know if that affected him tonight, but that's one reason John Baker is still on the roster.
01:29:52Here's second down, Emmitt Smith.
01:29:56Gets to the 47-yard line.
01:29:59Ed McDaniel, number 58, with a tackle.
01:30:01It'll be third and a knee probably of seven by the time they spot the football.
01:30:06Now here's where the offensive line has to give Troy Aikman some time.
01:30:10Where he has been under duress almost this whole game.
01:30:14Barry Switzer said to us yesterday.
01:30:16He's wishing now.
01:30:17He's very close his eyes and wishes.
01:30:18Right.
01:30:19He said to us yesterday, if we can protect Aikman, we have a chance on their corners.
01:30:24Fleming and Novacek come near side.
01:30:26It's 36.
01:30:29Irvin, right in his right side.
01:30:32Aikman back.
01:30:33Right in his right side.
01:30:35Aikman back across the middle.
01:30:37Corey Fleming.
01:30:39Corey Fleming to the 30-yard line.
01:30:42And that's a big play for the Cowboys.
01:30:45And Corey Fleming's a guy last week against Denver.
01:30:48Dropped a Hail Mary pass at the end of the half.
01:30:50And Ernie Zampezi was saying, hey, we need Corey Fleming to play better.
01:30:55Well, here and over time, he did.
01:30:58But it started with a protection burn.
01:31:00Very good protection there for Aikman.
01:31:03It's an easy throw there to Fleming.
01:31:05A gain of 17 yards.
01:31:08And now Ponyo is going to start facing the sidelines.
01:31:14First and 10, Dallas.
01:31:1517-17 in overtime.
01:31:19Watch out.
01:31:20This could be over.
01:31:24Touchdown, Dallas.
01:31:34A 31-yard scamper for the guy that Pat feels is the best running back in the league.
01:31:40What a comeback from a fumble that angered him for much of the night.
01:31:44150 yards for Emmitt Smith for the evening.
01:31:48And now, the Cowboys.
01:31:50And now, the Cowboys.
01:31:52And now, the Cowboys.
01:31:54And now, the Cowboys.
01:31:56And now, the Cowboys.
01:31:58And now, the Cowboys.
01:32:00And now, the Cowboys.
01:32:01Emmitt Smith for the evening.
01:32:03And he wins it for the Cowboys with a 31-yard run in overtime.
01:32:10He's the best. The best runner.
01:32:12And he's the best fourth quarter player, too.
01:32:15And now, maybe the best overtime player.
01:32:17Watch the left side of the offensive line.
01:32:21And you're going to see a guy that has made one big play after another, even though he struggled.
01:32:27He had three big runs. Long runs.
01:32:29You don't even have to have his belt thing done.
01:32:31Maybe his belt thing is his belt or whatever it is.
01:32:35Oh boy, the fashion police in the league are going to find him for that.
01:32:38Absolutely.
01:32:39Yeah.
01:32:40But you know, watch the left side.
01:32:41At least it's not a swoosh.
01:32:42It is.
01:32:43Here you go.
01:32:442 and 8 sealed off the inside.
01:32:47And Emmitt saw it.
01:32:48He felt it.
01:32:49And then he outran Charles Mitchell.
01:32:52It was a close call, which would come first, the touchdown or the possibility that his pants were going to fall down.
01:32:58Emmitt Smith, 31 yards.
01:33:01Toughest tackle provided by Michael Ervin.
