00:00:13Last week, the Dallas Cowboys fought off an enormous challenge for Minnesota, only to
00:00:17survive in overtime.
00:00:19For Dallas, it will be an enduring journey and an attempt to relive memories of their
00:00:23glorious past.
00:00:26And Arizona Buddy Ryan has made promises yet to be delivered.
00:00:30Veteran leader Dave Craig has not reached expectations, and always stingy defense has
00:00:35been vulnerable with injuries proving costly.
00:00:39But with a healthy Garrison Hearst, the Cardinals hope to make some noise in Texas today.
00:00:56Texas Stadium sold out, the home of the Dallas Cowboys, as the Arizona Cardinals come to
00:01:05town.
00:01:06The Cowboys' heavy favorites, good afternoon, I'm Pat Summerall with John Madden.
00:01:10You know, when Buddy Ryan came to the Arizona Cardinals, he promised a lot of things, things
00:01:15that haven't seemed to materialize.
00:01:17What do you think, in your opinion, went wrong with Buddy's philosophy?
00:01:20Well, I don't think he had enough players early, and then I think he went to change
00:01:25him, and he started with one group last year, and he's starting with a totally new group
00:01:30this year, and he doesn't seem to have as much confidence this year.
00:01:34You know, over the years, Buddy's had success against the Dallas Cowboys because his head
00:01:37coaching record is eight and four, but I don't think he feels as good about it, and he knows
00:01:43that he has problems here, because what he likes to do is take someone or something away,
00:01:48and then gang up on the other thing.
00:01:50Now ideally, he would like to take Emmitt Smith out of the game.
00:01:53He would like to gang up on the run, stop Emmitt Smith, and then be able to blitz, go
00:01:57after Troy Aikman, shut out Michael Irvin, but the Cowboys are too smart for that.
00:02:01I mean, they aren't going to play into that.
00:02:03I think on first down, you're going to see some passing.
00:02:05I think Ernie Zampezi, the offensive coordinator, is smart enough that he's not going to play
00:02:10into Buddy's hands.
00:02:11In other words, if he's supposed to pass, he may run.
00:02:13If he's supposed to run, he may throw the ball.
00:02:15John, this is our first look at the Dallas Cowboys, Fox's first look.
00:02:19They seem, after losing the championship game last year to San Francisco, and losing
00:02:23in the regular season to the 49ers, they seem to have come back this year rededicated.
00:02:27How have they accomplished that, or have they?
00:02:29I think they have.
00:02:30I mean, you know, we got that feeling when we saw them in preseason and in training camp.
00:02:34This just looks like a different group of guys.
00:02:35I think last year, they were, you know, they had the new coach thing, they had the thing
00:02:39that they were the defending champions, everyone was going after them, every game was a championship
00:02:44game, and I think that they, you know, kind of took it for granted that, you know, we've
00:02:48been there the last couple years, we're going to be here every day.
00:02:51And then that 49er game, that championship game against the 49ers, that took a lot out
00:02:56of them.
00:02:57Then I think they really did rededicate themselves.
00:02:58I mean, look at Troy Aikman, he lost weight, he looks like a different guy.
00:03:02Emmitt Smith, every time he runs the ball, he looks like he's the most determined guy
00:03:07that I've ever seen.
00:03:08I mean, he looks like he's trying to run through and around everything, and Michael Irvin's
00:03:12working harder than he's ever worked.
00:03:14He's in great shape.
00:03:15Charles Haley is probably, right now, the best defensive lineman in football, and this
00:03:19is a team on a mission.
00:03:22And the question certainly remains, are the Cowboys, faced by the Cardinals today, are
00:03:26they better than the 49ers, or are the 49ers better?
00:03:29Time will tell.

00:04:23Let's have a look at the Dallas offense, led by the quarterback, Troy Aikman.
00:04:27As John Madden mentioned, much lighter this year than in previous years.
00:04:31In front of him, the biggest, they're not lighter, the biggest offensive line, I think,
00:04:35in baseball.
00:04:36Two and eight, Newton, Donaldson, Allen, and Ron Stone, starting in place of Eric Williams
00:04:40today at right tackle.
00:04:43Emmitt Smith, Darrell Johnson, the two backs, Kevin Williams, Michael Irvin, and Jay Novacek
00:04:47to find tight end.
00:04:50He's lined up left.

00:05:40Well, that's Buddy Ryan's idea, is that you take away the run.
00:05:45If you can take away the run, and I don't know that you can ever do that against the
00:05:49Dallas Cowboys and Emmitt Smith, but if you can take away the run, then you can get him
00:05:53in these situations, these third and long, then you can make your substitutions, you
00:05:58can get your nickel defense in there, get your pass rushers in there, mix up your blitzes,
00:06:03and just make the team one-dimensional.
00:06:07And that one dimension would figure to be passed right here, three wide receivers for
00:06:11the Cowboys.
00:06:13That'll be Corey Fleming, the other one.
00:06:16Eggman.
00:06:18Kevin Williams, and up for a first.

00:06:25One of the things the Cowboys were talking about is going to Kevin Williams more.
00:06:29In three games, he's only caught two passes.
00:06:32And they know that everyone's thinking about Michael Irvin.

00:06:35They kind of start on a double of Michael Irvin, and they let Kevin Williams come underneath
00:06:40and get that first down.
00:06:43Cowboys get a little breathing room.

00:06:51This is what the Cardinals are worried about.
00:06:54If they can stop their first drive, they'll be in pretty good shape.
00:06:56The Cowboys are always scoring that first drive.

00:07:17That's one thing about Michael Irvin, he is so big and so strong that he is going to get
00:07:23And then after he gets open, he's going to catch the ball, and then he's going to be tough to tackle.
00:07:27You see right there, Brent Alexander, number 46, he runs right by Alexander.
00:07:32And then he's so strong in the shoulders up there that he just kind of shrugs him off.
00:07:36Boom, and Alexander goes flying off him, and he picks up another 10 yards.

00:07:48That was a real touch pass by Eggman to Irvin.
00:07:52Johnny Greer, the referee, called against the Cowboys, Nate Newton.
00:07:59Well, big Nate there got a little anxious to get out there and start getting some locking done.
00:08:08He is a heck of a guard.
00:08:10Everyone talks about Nate, and how big he is, and he is all that, and how quip he is, and he is that.
00:08:16But also, he has a lot of speed and a lot of quickness and a lot of strength, and he is a heck of a football player.
00:08:22And arms that look like legs, reverse coming.

00:08:30He got back just about a yard past the line of scrimmage stopped by Seth Joyner.
00:08:36This is going to be against the Cowboys, probably holding.
00:08:40Yeah, that's one of the problems with running reverses is that happens so many times.
00:08:44You seem to see so many penalties on reverses because you're trying to get them going one way and then bring them back the other way.
00:08:53And you seem to get a lot of holding and a lot of clipping penalties on reverses.

00:11:14You know, I know that they had to be expecting a blitz here because they were just going to go to the up to Michael Irvin.

00:11:38They didn't get the blitz, but when you have a guy like Troy Aikman throwing to Michael Irvin,
00:11:43it doesn't make any difference what the defense is.

00:11:54You know, Troy Aikman was saying the other day, I think it's so true,
00:11:57that he bets that he leads the leagues in passes that get down to the one-yard line.

00:12:06That's the way, if you look at Dallas scoring or anyone in these fantasy leagues,
00:12:10it's always Emmitt Smith gets the touchdown, but Troy Aikman throws a lot of long passes.
00:12:16And that was a perfect strike to Michael Irvin.
00:12:19If you had Emmitt Smith, what would you do?
00:12:21You'd throw it.
00:12:23You'd throw it.
00:12:24Fake it to him.
00:12:26The Novacek touchdown.
00:12:31That's not a bad thing.
00:12:32You jam him in there, and then you fake it to him on second half
00:12:36because they all believe that when you get down in the goal line,
00:12:39they're going to give it to Emmitt Smith, fake it to Emmitt Smith,
00:12:42throw it out there to Jay Novacek.
00:12:44One of the things the Cardinals said to us yesterday is we just can't afford to get behind.

00:12:53The other thing he said is they always seem to score on that first drive, and they did.

00:20:11As Buddy Ryan and the Cardinals were talking about yesterday,
00:20:14one of the things we can't let happen is
00:20:17let them get that first drive in the end zone,
00:20:19score early in the first quarter.
00:20:21And that's what they've done this year and last year.
00:20:24You can see last year they scored 100 points to 34 of their opponents.
00:20:29So far this season it's 27 to 3.
00:20:33First and 15.
00:20:36Aikman a throw.

00:20:42Novacek in the area, but that was too high for him.
00:20:46And a lot of that has to do with the offensive coordinator, Ernie Zampezi,
00:20:50and having a quarterback like Troy Aikman.

00:20:58Ernie never gets into a rut of just doing one thing.
00:21:01For example, they haven't been able to run the ball yet.
00:21:04Emmitt Smith has only carried the ball three times for three yards,
00:21:07but they're going to get to that.
00:21:09So what they're trying to do now is loosen up this Cardinal defense.
00:21:14Ernie's not going to run out of pencils either.

00:21:28And, you know, again, that's a Buddy Ryan defense,

00:21:35In other words, they're going to let Troy Aikman beat him
00:21:37or Michael Irvin or Jay Novacek.
00:21:39But right now, initially in this game, they are going to stop Emmitt Smith.
00:21:45That's an all-day job.
00:21:48Well, that's what Buddy's always pleased.
00:21:49You take away the run, make them pass, make them one-dimensional,
00:21:53then go after them.

00:22:06You know, get that long yardage and then be able to blitz or not blitz,
00:22:10but, you know, really put the heat on the quarterback,
00:22:13and that was a perfect Cardinal secondary.
00:22:16And you've got to catch this.
00:22:19I mean, that's the thing that happens.
00:22:21When you do go on that blitz, you do cover one-on-one,
00:22:26and your cover guy has to be able to do it.
00:22:28And then if you get the ball away, you've got to catch it.

00:23:48Yeah, when you have, you know, Russell Maryland in there playing a run
00:23:51and Big Cat Leon Lett and Robert Jones in there, you aren't going anywhere.

00:24:13You know that old experiment somewhere in psychology, remember,
00:24:17where you would go and a rat would go in, and if he'd go left,
00:24:20you'd hit him over the head, and if he'd go right, he'd get the cheese.
00:24:23After a couple times, he'd go in and go right all the time.
00:24:27I think Garrison Hurst, when you go in the middle, that doesn't work.

00:24:35I mean, that was.
00:24:36That's like Pavlov for some way.
00:24:37I mean, that's one of those things that, you know,
00:24:39even a rat, if you hit him in the head, won't go that way.
