00:11All day long.
00:12Don't forget what happened last year.
00:13All day long.
00:14Let's hit, stick, and bust it.
00:15Let's hit, stick, and bust it.
00:36Here we are faced with an opportunity to win a third Super Bowl in four years.
00:41Something that's never been done before.
00:43And that's the motivating thing for me.
00:48You can't make history losing.
00:50But you can make history winning.
00:52And we want the glory.
00:54We want it all.
00:55We're greedy.
00:56We're selfish.
00:57We want it all.
00:58It's no way in the world that they're going to let this little bit of glory slip out.
01:25And I'm going to tell you, I'm going to be right there.
01:27Because this is a chance for me to get five Super Bowl games.
01:31They want me in a hill of beans, man, if we don't win the Super Bowl.
01:34When you get to the final game of the season and win it, hopefully win it,
01:38it makes all your personal goals worthwhile.
01:41Handoff Emmitt Smith at the 15 to the 10.
01:43He'll score.
01:44Emmitt Smith dances to the end zone.
01:47And Dallas, your team, is about to return to a Super Bowl.
02:04Aikman to pass on first and goal from the three.
02:06Wide open.
02:07Daynovatek.
02:08Touchdown.
02:14Here's a pass in the flat.
02:15Kicked off by the Cowboys.
02:16Larry Brown may score at the 30, 20, 10.
02:19Out of bounds at the six-yard line.
02:22The Cowboys need one more play to win their fifth Super Bowl.
02:26Handoff Emmitt Smith on the right-hand side.
02:28Touchdown.
02:29Emmitt Smith scores.
02:30And Dallas, you can celebrate because your Cowboys are world champions again.
02:45American League Soccer
03:04Back to throw again is Aikman.
03:05Some pressure gets the pass away.
03:07Eric Davis takes it off.
03:09He's gonna land down the left side, 20, 10, 5.
03:12Touchdown 49ers.
03:15We were in the conference championship game, and I wished we'd played our best game of
03:24the year instead of our worst game of the year, and not at self-destructive like we
03:29had.
03:30But we were a good football team, and we'll be a good football team next year because
03:32of our core talent base that we have.
03:37We will be playing with new faces.
03:39There is a transition.
03:40There is a change.
03:43But it sweeps all NFL.
03:47There are 26 players that were not on the Cowboy roster two years ago.
03:52It will be a different football team than 95.
03:56We would have liked to, over the last two years, kept every free agent we've lost.
04:00But the good news is we've had people step up there.
04:02But the people that are our heart, the people that have the work ethic, the people that
04:06we look to to make the big plays, we're going to continue to build around them.
04:12The spark plug of the 1995 Cowboys Super Bowl machine was Emmett Smith, as he emphatically
04:20reminded a national TV audience on opening night at the Jersey Meadowlands.
04:25If there were any concerns about Emmett's hamstring problems of 94, they were quickly
04:30dispelled the very first time he touched the ball.
04:33He's going to score!
04:34Touchdown, Cowboys!
04:35A 60-yard ramble by Emmett Smith.
04:36Is he back?
04:37I would say so.
04:39Smith clocked in with 163 yards while tying a club record with four touchdowns.
04:48Meanwhile, the Dallas defense posted its first shutout since 1992.
04:53But their New York counterparts had no answer for Michael Irvin, who torched the Giants
04:58for over 100 yards and his first score of the season.
05:04Dallas made it all look easy in what proved to be its most decisive win of 1995.
05:09The following week, in their home opener, the Cowboys were more severely tested by the
05:14visiting Denver Broncos.
05:17South and pit bulls.
05:18Let's go, boys!
05:19Get on your ass!
05:20We'll double it on three.
05:21One, two, three.
05:22Double it!
05:23There's nobody going to beat us on our ground!
05:26Denver put the ball in the end zone three times, but that still wasn't enough to offer
05:31the precise passing of quarterback Troy Aikman, who also punched in his first and only rushing
05:37touchdown of the season.
05:39Foot leg to the right.
05:40Still running.
05:41Cuts it up at the five.
05:42It's good!
05:43Oh!
05:44It's good!
05:45A degree of difficulty you wouldn't believe.
05:48We ain't giving up nothing.
05:49Shutout, baby.
05:50Shutout.
05:51We ain't giving up nothing.
05:52We ain't giving up nothing.
05:54We ain't giving up nothing.
05:55We ain't giving up nothing.
05:58The Dallas defense was led by number 94, Charles Haley, who sacked John Elway twice.
06:06And when Elway himself wasn't sent in reverse, his passes were.
06:11Elway.
06:12Short drop.
06:13Pass thrown.
06:14Blocked by Henning.
06:15Intercepted by the Cowboys.
06:16At the 20.
06:17Down to the 10.
06:18Down to the 7.
06:19Larry Brown on the tip drill.
06:21The Cowboys' on-field performance and off-field dealings only added to their fans' lofty expectations
06:27for 1995.
06:39Indeed, Dallas finally did have Deion Sanders signing him to the NFL's most generous contract.
06:46I haven't been listening to anything on television.
06:48Nothing at all.
06:49I sit in the hotel room.
06:50Who else comes on TV but Jerry?
06:53Jerry said, Deion, if you're out there.
06:56I said, yeah, Jerry.
07:00Dallas is the place for you.
07:02And that was the first time I really seen it in his eyes that he was really sincere
07:06and this could be a beautiful relationship.
07:09And that's when I made my decision.
07:10I want to be a Dallas Cowboy.
07:12Arthroscopic surgery would sideline Sanders until late October.
07:16But his new teammates created some prime-time excitement of their own against Minnesota.
07:22We can't give them any slack, any pressure, baby.
07:25They're disrespecting our ass.
07:27All red.
07:28All red.
07:29We ain't even kicked the ball off.
07:30That's enough to piss anybody off.
07:31Let's whip the ass of the old house and take it back to Dallas where we can enjoy it.
07:39Straight back to pass at time.
07:41Throws for Irvin in the end zone.
07:43Touchdown, Cowboys!
07:44After Dallas scored first, the defense created problems for the Viking coaching staff.
07:49We're not blocking them.
07:50I know what you're saying, Brian, but the last three runs have gotten less than a yard.
08:08We got them, baby.
08:09We got them.
08:10They can't fool us.
08:11Smith behind Johnson with Novacek in motion to give to Emmitt.
08:14Smith backs and slides.
08:16The Cowboys forged ahead 17-10 when Jay Novacek scored the first two-point conversion in team history.
08:23The lead seemed safe with only seconds to play, but it wasn't.
08:27We coming to get you.
08:29Let's go, baby.
08:30Keep it up.
08:31Keep it up.
08:3233 seconds.
08:33All we have left.
08:34Back goes Boone.
08:35Fires to Chris Carter.
08:36Touchdown!
08:37Diving in the end zone.
08:39Chris Carter against Clayton Hull.
08:41I can't believe it.
08:47Check me out, baby.
08:50Just keep fighting.
08:51No big play.
08:52Just keep fighting, baby.
08:53We'll win this thing.
08:54In overtime, Dallas won the toss.
08:57Then Troy Aikman navigated through the Viking defense with two crucial completions.
09:04On the fifth play of the series, Aikman turned the keys over to Emmitt Smith,
09:09who promptly drove right to the winner's circle.
09:12To Emmitt Smith.
09:13Left tackle running.
09:14We're in 30.
09:15To the 10.
09:16To the 5.
09:17Touchdown, Dallas.
09:18This game is over.
09:20The Cowboys have won it.
09:21A 31-yard run by Emmitt Smith in overtime, and Dallas wins in a thrilling
09:27come-from-behind fashion here in the Metrodome tonight.
09:40Barry Switzer was still smiling a week later
09:43when Buddy Ryan's Cardinals came calling to Texas Stadium.
09:47Arizona's defense never did quite figure out a way
09:50to stop the Cowboy triumvirate of Aikman, Irvin, and Emmitt
09:54as Dallas rolled to its fourth straight win.
10:02A lot of backs have played this game a lot of years
10:05who would like to have had a year like Emmitt's had in September.
10:09Smith was just as deadly in the air,
10:12posting his season high in reception yardage.
10:15And when Emmitt finally got a breather,
10:17his understudy Sherman Williams virtually covered the earth
10:21with the first touchdown of his NFL career.
10:25Quick count for Aikman.
10:27Hand off Williams.
10:28He gets the first down.
10:2935-30.
10:30He scores.
10:31To the 20.
10:32To the 15.
10:33To the 10.
10:34To the 5.
10:35Touchdown, Sherman Williams.
10:36Next, Dallas tried to muscle in on Washington.
10:39What's the Redskins are going to do?
10:41Right there to the Cowboys.
10:42Right there.
10:43Power.
10:44The power.
10:45The power.
10:46The power.
10:47I can't keep you with that.
10:48You got the power.
10:49Right there.
10:50Right there.
10:51That's right.
10:52Shock the world day today, baby.
10:54Shock the world day.
10:56The Redskins indeed had some surprises for their guests,
11:00but the Cowboys were also victimized by a run of bad luck.
11:05Lobs it over the middle.
11:06Incomplete.
11:07Intended for Darrell Johnston.
11:08And Aikman looks like he's hurt.
11:10Looks like he might have hurt his knee or ankle.
11:12He's shaken up.
11:13He's having some trouble.
11:15He's standing up, but they're going to have to come get him.
11:18A calf strain sent Aikman to the sidelines,
11:21but the Cowboy defense seemed ready to step up in his absence.
11:25Touchdown by Woodson.
11:2635-30.
11:2725-20.
11:28Down to the 15.
11:29To the 10.
11:30Darrell Woodson to the 5.
11:31Touchdown, the Cowboys.
11:33Woodson's score put Dallas ahead,
11:36but it would be their last lead of the afternoon.
11:39Touchdown, Washington Redskins.
11:46The Redskins have done it.
11:47Upset the Cowboys at RFK.
11:50Field team observers felt Aikman could even walk to the team bus,
11:55let alone start the following week at home against Green Bay.
11:59Much to the Packers' dismay, number eight was in uniform
12:03and in the lineup the entire afternoon.
12:13Aikman shredded the Packer defense for over 300 yards
12:16and a pair of scores to Jay Novacek and Michael Irvin
12:20as Dallas raced to a 21-point advantage.
12:23Now it's a 48-yard line in Green Bay territory.
12:26Deep drop for Aikman.
12:27Steps up.
12:28Going for the bomb.
12:29Michael Irvin wide open.
12:30Touchdown, Cowboys.
12:32Oh, what a play.
12:34Yeah.
12:35Green Bay couldn't stop Aikman in the first half
12:38and couldn't contain Emmitt Smith in the second
12:41as number 22 scored his 11th touchdown of the young season
12:45to put the game out of reach.
12:49Next up for the Cowboys was an all-expenses paid weekend
12:53in San Diego against the depending AFC champion Chargers.
13:08Cowboys are headed for a major wipeout.
13:11From San Diego's Jack Murphy Stadium on a beautiful Sunday
13:15the Chargers are coming off the road.
13:17America's team is in town.
13:19Troy, Emmitt, Michael.
13:21The Dallas Cowboys are here to meet the Bulls.
13:25It was a meeting the Chargers probably wished they had never attended.
13:34Gilbert to throw.
13:35Here comes the blitz.
13:36He gets sacked.
13:37The ball is knocked loose.
13:38Hot football.
13:39I think they're going to say the Cowboys may have recovered
13:43The Cowboys' first scoring drive followed a script
13:46that had become painfully familiar to their opponents.
13:49Troy Aikman to Michael Irvin,
13:51setting up an Emmitt Smith touchdown plunge.
13:59Then the Cowboys altered their cast of characters
14:02but wide out Kevin Williams and pull-back Dillard
14:05were the only ones to score.
14:07The Cowboys altered their cast of characters
14:10but wide out Kevin Williams and pull-back Darryl Johnston
14:13got the same results.
14:19Hand off Johnston.
14:20He just walks into the end zone.
14:22There's a moose scoring a touchdown.
14:25The fierce pass rush led by Antonio Tober tallied six sacks
14:31and four Dallas takeaways.
14:34Hey, get Tober, guys.
14:35That's the hero right here.
14:38Say hi to little Tober.
14:40Say hi to little Tober.
14:42Say hi to little Tober.
14:44That quarterback had a long day.
14:47Four interceptions.
14:49I don't know how many sacks.
14:50Good job, man.
14:54Need to go and soak in the ocean or something.
14:58A healthy Deion Sanders made his first appearance of 95
15:02against some former teammates.
15:04That's right, Deion, hold it.
15:08Hey, Dallas.
15:09All right, Deion, it's all you now, baby.
15:11It's all you, 2-1.
15:13Prime time wasted little time
15:16letting the Falcons know he was back in town
15:19and more than ready to defend his turf.
15:26Third down and goal.
15:27George with all day to throw.
15:28Airs it out in the end zone.
15:30Knocked down by Deion Sanders.
15:32Intended for Bert Emanuel.
15:35Sanders got most of the attention
15:37but was more than happy to share the glory
15:39with another Cowboy cult figure, Darryl Moose Johnston.
15:45Johnston to the five.
15:46Hey, yeah.
15:47Knocked down.
15:48Darryl Johnston, an eight-yard run.
15:51Also itching for a spot at center stage was Michael Irvin.
15:55I got to go deep.
15:56I got to go deep.
15:59Here's a deep drop for Aikman, first in.
16:01Humpback going way down the field for Michael Irvin.
16:03Bumping and grinding at the five.
16:05He's got it.
16:06Touchdown, Cowboys.
16:08No flag.
16:10The game was all but over when Deion made a long-distance attempt
16:14to give the Cowboys an extra dividend on their investment.
16:18Goes right to Deion Sanders at the five.
16:21He bobbles the ball incomplete.
16:23I don't know how.
16:25I don't know how.
16:27I didn't think I could out-throw Brian Tyler.
16:30I know.
16:31He's lost his speed.
16:34But he was so wide open.
16:36That's the way he was last time, too.
16:40Naturally, Deion's debut became a hot topic of post-game conversation.
16:45Cowboys are selfish, man.
16:47Why they try to beat people by big margins?
16:49Had them down and took Deion deep anyway.
16:52Mm-mm-mm, mm-mm-mm.
16:56Primetime's next opportunity came where else?
17:00In primetime, during his Texas Stadium debut on Monday Night Football.
17:05Sanders showed a nationwide audience that, yes, he could tackle.
17:10And he had a few other tricks up his sleeve the Eagles weren't expecting.
17:16And reverse Deion Sanders at the 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40.
17:21Sanders to the 45, 50.
17:23Gets a blocker.
17:24Somehow, Deion Sanders snuck on the field.
17:27The only player more anxious to touch the ball was Emmitt Smith,
17:31who always seemed to save his best performances for the Eagles.
17:35And off Emmitt Smith.
17:36Up the middle.
17:3725, 30.
17:38One tackle to break it down.
17:3925, 20.
17:40Right to the end zone to the 10, to the 5.
17:42Touchdown, Cowboys.
17:45Troy Aikman and Michael Irvin gave the crowd even more to cheer about
17:48with their customary scoring hookup.
17:51And so did cornerback Larry Brown,
17:53who had never notched an NFL touchdown until Philadelphia
17:58unintentionally ended the drought.
18:01Big rush.
18:02Goes to the glass.
18:03Intercepted by Larry Brown.
18:05He'll score from the 20-yard line.
18:07Touchdown, Cowboys.
18:08The Cowboys were thriving under all the media attention.
18:11Actually, they had no other choice.
18:14We got radio.
18:15We got TV.
18:16We got the beat writers.
18:18I mean, you got like 50,000 different opinions,
18:21where in the average town you only got about 10.
18:23Now we get all this thrown in on top of ESPN and everybody else,
18:28and we just don't know which way we're going sometimes.
18:31There always seems to be other things going on around the outside.
18:34This year in particular, though, I think there definitely was a lot more.
18:39We had the signing of Dion, the things with Nike and American Express,
18:43the lawsuit against us, the countersuit by us against the NFL.
18:47I think the players and everybody within the organization
18:50did a very good job of staying focused.
18:52We felt we had something to prove coming out this season.
18:56There's such a thing as creating some negative vibes at times
19:00when the expectations are so high.
19:03But at the same time, our team is used to those kind of distractions.
19:08In fact, when they don't have any distractions,
19:11it's probably a distraction to them.
19:14The media glare was especially bright
19:16for the Cowboys' midseason showdown with their most hated rival.
19:20One, two, three.
19:22Woo!
19:23♪♪
19:25Kerr back to throw.
19:26Over the middle and it's caught.
19:27Here's Wright.
19:28He's off and running.
19:30He's to the 40.
19:31They can't catch him.
19:32He'll beat them all.
19:34Touchdown, 49ers!
19:37The quick strike was a body blow
19:39from which Dallas simply could not recover.
19:43Quick slam in.
19:44Ball is caught at fumble.
19:4549ers pick it up, bring it back.
19:47It's Hank.
19:48He's going to go.
19:49He'll go in.
19:50Touchdown, 49ers again.
19:52Unbelievable.
19:54Are we in San Francisco again now?
19:55Have we not seen this before?
19:57Flashback from last year.
19:59The Cowboys were stunned but had little time to lick their wounds.
20:03Ahead lay two games in 10 days against the best teams in the AFC.
20:07America's team, Raiders!
20:10Raiders!
20:11Raiders!
20:12Raiders!
20:13America's team, Raiders!
20:15Going to take him down.
20:16He's going down.
20:20Let's make some plays.
20:21We need them this weekend.
20:24Play action.
20:25It's going to be the bomb.
20:26It's a 45.
20:27It's intercepted by Deion Sanders at the 40-yard line.
20:30He waves the ball in the air.
20:32It's like, I've got it, boys.
20:33Turn around.
20:34Let's go the other way.
20:35Oh, yeah.
20:36Oh, yeah.
20:37Like Babe Ruth pointing to the outfield fence.
20:40Sanders then turned matters over to Michael Irvin,
20:43and number 88 ripped the Raiders secondary to shreds.
20:47First down from the 17.
20:48Deep drop.
20:49Throws.
20:50Michael Irvin wide open.
20:51Touchdown, Cowboys.
20:52Oh, man, was he wide open.
20:55You know, now, if I was playing Deion, I'd get so proud of my mouth.
20:58I'm going up every play, every set.
21:00Oakland stayed in single coverage against Irvin and paid dearly.
21:04But the Cowboys' cash register was Emmitt Smith,
21:07who rang up three touchdowns in one of the most pivotal victories of the season.
21:12A contest to Emmitt Smith.
21:14Leading to the left has a block by Johnson.
21:16At the 10-yard line.
21:17Still free at the 5.
21:18Down to the 3.
21:19Touchdown, Cowboys.
21:20Oh, man, what a run.
21:21First and goal from the 4.
21:22Hand off Emmitt Smith.
21:23Corner of the end zone.
21:24Easy touchdown for Emmitt Smith, his third of the day.
21:28Four days later,
21:30the Cowboys were rude Thanksgiving hosts for the visiting Chiefs.
21:34Let's play with poise.
21:36Let's play one play at a time.
21:39Every play won't go our way.
21:41Let's play with poise, with purpose.
21:44Hey, 11-1.
21:48First down at the Kansas City 15.
21:50Hand off Emmitt Smith again.
21:5115 big.
21:52To the 5.
21:53He scores.
21:54Emmitt Smith.
21:55Touchdown, Cowboys.
21:56And all at a hole.
21:57You found the 88.
21:59You found the 88.
22:01You found the 88, baby.
22:02Let's go.
22:03Aikman on third and 13.
22:04Going for the bomb again for Michael Irvin in the corner of the end zone.
22:07He bobbles the ball.
22:08Oh, what a catch.
22:10Oh, man.
22:11Dale Carter was there.
22:12The ball was there.
22:14And Michael Irvin stayed with it.
22:16So let's keep our poise.
22:18Let's keep our poise.
22:20One play at a time.
22:21We've got a lot of football left.
22:22Let's call it a day.
22:24Come on, come on, come on, come on.
22:27Second down and 8.
22:29Pass over the middle wide open.
22:30Novatek 25-20.
22:31He races to the end zone.
22:32Oh, look at that.
22:33He's got the score.
22:34Dane Novatek hurdles a player at the 15 and goes 33 yards for the touchdown.
22:41Kansas City tried to stage a comeback, but the Dallas defense had other ideas.
22:47Bootleg to the right.
22:48Oh, boom.
22:49Oh, no.
22:50That was a fumble.
22:51Fumble picked up by Darren Smith at the 40 to the 50.
22:55It's a race to the end zone with the guard giving chase.
22:58To the 30.
22:59Down to the 20.
23:00It's Darren Smith.
23:01Down to the 13.
23:03Down to the 5.
23:06Having disposed of the AFC's elite,
23:08the Cowboys turned their attention to a rematch with the Redskins.
23:12Emmitt Smith showed warm love for former teammate James Washington
23:17when he ran into him before the game.
23:20But it turned into tough love when he ran over him a few minutes later.
23:25He smacked into James Washington and carried J.W. right into the end zone.
23:33But the Redskins continued their winning ways against the Cowboys,
23:37sweeping the season series for the first time since 1987.
23:43The footsteps heard off in the distance belonged to the Philadelphia Eagles
23:47who were closing the gap in the division race.
23:50Entering brutally cold Veterans Stadium to an equally chilly reception,
23:55the Cowboys were about to play in one of the most controversial games
23:59in franchise history.
24:02Let's get some respect, man.
24:04We have no respect for our running game, fellas.
24:07They say that we have to take away our receivers,
24:09Let's just keep doing what we're doing.
24:11Led by Larry Allen's crushing block,
24:14the Cowboys took early control on the line of scrimmage.
24:18To the 5, pushes to the end zone.
24:20Touchdown, Cowboys.
24:22Darryl Johnston showed the way.
24:27Emmitt bounces outside like he did twice against Oakland
24:30and scored, pushing Taylor into the end zone.
24:33This is an amazing run by Emmitt.
24:36I'll run in the building.
24:38They're starting to say we can't run the damn football.
24:41They want a last stand made up in that second there.
24:43We'll run on them all day.
24:45All day, all day.
24:47I mean, all night.
24:48Let's go, brother.
24:49Keep it going.
24:50Second and seven.
24:51Here comes the Cowboys on a blitz.
24:53Throw to sideline.
24:54Intercepted by the Cowboys.
24:55The Cowboys are down.
24:56The Cowboys are down.
24:57The Cowboys are down.
24:58The Cowboys are down.
24:59The Cowboys are down.
25:00The Cowboys are down.
25:01The Cowboys are down.
25:02The Cowboys are down.
25:03The Cowboys are down.
25:04Sideline.
25:05Intercepted by Larry Brown.
25:06He may score a 40.
25:0745-50.
25:0845-40.
25:09He will score.
25:10This is a touchdown.
25:11Larry Brown has his second TD of the year.
25:13Touchdown, Dallas, on the interception by Larry Brown.
25:18But the quick lead evaporated as the Eagles tied the game at 17 late in the final period.
25:24Deep in his own territory, Barry Switzer gambled on fourth and short
25:29in hopes of keeping possession.
25:33Barry Switzer makes the call.
25:35Eagles completed it.
25:36They stopped the Cowboys here.
25:38They give it to Smith.
25:39He doesn't make it.
25:40They stop him.
25:41The Eagles take over on bounds.
25:43The Eagles take over on bounds.
25:44Dallas lost, and critics nationwide angrily called for the head of the beleaguered Cowboy coach.
25:51After the Philadelphia game, I think the criticism got to its peak level during the course of the season.
25:57One of the first things he did was address the team in the meeting on Monday
26:00and told us that he had had to deal with adversity throughout his life
26:04and gave us some indications of things that had happened during his personal life
26:08that I myself was not aware of and I'm sure some of the other players.
26:11He said that those were much more difficult to overcome than what he was going to have to face here.
26:16Because of that, he had kind of built up a rough exterior.
26:20He took a lot of criticism.
26:22I mean, stuff that he probably didn't have nothing to do with, he still had to feel it.
26:28It kind of touched, you know, this man out trying to do his job and not giving a fair chance.
26:34It's going to be hard for him.
26:35I don't care who you are.
26:36You know, when there's change, there's always resistance to change.
26:39And finally, the last thing is acceptance.
26:41And when you go through a spectrum of emotions, that's the final emotion you have to deal with
26:45is that finally there's an acceptance.
26:47I'm here.
26:49And that's what Jerry wants, what I want, that's what it's going to be.
26:54The players quickly closed ranks behind Switzer.
26:57But their on-field performance was not nearly as steadfast as the allegiance shown to their coach.
27:05Against the lowly Giants, Dallas trailed for most of the day.
27:09And only a record-tying five field goals from Chris Bonio saved the Cowboys.
27:15His last kick, the game-winner, came with only one second left on the clock.
27:20Cowboys to win it.
27:21Snap, spot, kick on its way.
27:24And it was good.
27:29The losing streak was finally over, but the Cowboys remained a troubled team.
27:35The intensity was there, but it wasn't as high as it was at the beginning of the season.
27:41And it's hard to keep that intensity up week after week after week.
27:45But it's expected of us, and we expect it of ourselves.
27:49I think our guys had gotten to the point where they had just about had enough of the
27:54they're done, they're finished, they're not the Cowboys of old, there's no Cowboy Mystique anymore.
28:00We should feel like there's no Cowboy Mystique.
28:03We ought to just line up and play our game of football the way we know how to play it.
28:09On Christmas night in the Arizona desert,
28:12Dallas resurrected the season with its best performance since opening day.
28:16Losses by the Eagles and 49ers meant that the Cowboys could clinch the division crown
28:22and play off home field advantage with a victory.
28:25And it would be supporting player Kevin Williams taking the leading man's role
28:30with nine catches for over 200 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
28:36Here's a pass to Kevin Williams to clean at the 50, turns a curl at the 10, to the 5, touchdown Cowboys!
28:43Aikman drops wide open, down the middle, boom, caught Kevin Williams.
28:4925, 20, 15, 10, 5, he's caught from behind, he grabs himself and pushes himself into the end zone.
28:56Boy that's a great effort by Kevin Williams.
29:01The Dallas defense, healthier than it had been in weeks, shifted into high gear,
29:07aggressively hounding the Cardinals into three sacks and as many turnovers,
29:11blowing the game wide open well before halftime.
29:16Here's a pass picked off by Brock Marion at the 30, 25, 20, 15, 10, 5, touchdown Cowboys!
29:22Now only one issue still remained unresolved, a record score for Emmitt Smith.
29:29And off Emmitt Smith at the 5, up to the 3, to the 1, touchdown Emmitt Smith, yellow record.
29:35The 25th rushing touchdown of the year for Emmitt Smith.
29:41Just weeks before, Dallas had been left for dead.
29:44Now they were the Super Bowl favorite.
29:46In little more than a month, the Cowboys would return to this same stadium
29:50and prove they were indeed the very best team in the world.
29:55Prove they were indeed the very best team in the NFL.
30:01What a game expected this afternoon.
30:03The Eagles, who beat the Cowboys at the vet, beat them dramatically,
30:07up against a tremendous challenge.
30:09Down with the Eagles! Yeah!
30:12Dominate! Dominate! Dominate! Dominate! Dominate!
30:18It's all now! In the house! We're gonna take it away from them!
30:22We're gonna bring them down! We're gonna bring them down!
30:25Bring them down on three! One, two, three!
30:30It was the Eagles and not the Cowboys who fell, as the Dallas defense stuffed the run,
30:36limiting Philadelphia to a miserly 74 yards.
30:41Once the legs were chopped off, the body was sure to follow.
30:45The Cowboys sent quarterback Rodney Peet packing from the pocket,
30:49where he became an inviting target.
30:54With one jarring open field hit, safety Darren Woodson knocked Peet out of the game,
30:59all but classifying the Eagle offense D-O-A.
31:04Using number 54, Kurt Covea, the Eagles tried to blitz Troy Aikman,
31:08who coolly avoided the rush.
31:16With prime receiver Michael Irvin taken away by coverage,
31:19Aikman directed his focus toward Kevin Williams,
31:22who responded with six runs and a touchdown.
31:25The Eagles were on a winning streak,
31:28The Cowboys ultimate, but not so secret weapon was launched early in the second quarter.
31:33Here's a reverse to Deion Sanders,
31:35cuts up field at the 25, now reverses direction,
31:38finds a blocker at the 20, to the right, to the 10, to the 5,
31:42touchdown, the Eagles win!
31:45The Eagles win the game, and the Cowboys win the game.
31:49The Cowboys win the game, and the Eagles win the game.
31:52The Cowboys win the game, and the Eagles win the game.
31:55To the right, to the 10, to the 5, touchdown, Deion Sanders!
32:00Sanders sparkled as he read the offensive script,
32:03then totally re-rolled it.
32:06Started left, was stopped, went to the right, and ran all 21 yards.
32:10Oh, that's only Deion Sanders who can get that one in.
32:15Here he goes, here he goes!
32:18Deion Sanders scores on the offense,
32:21the Sanders shuffle in the end zone.
32:26Deception had broken the ice,
32:29now sheer cowboy muscle would brutally overpower the Eagles.
32:34Harold Johnston, in motion, handoff Emmitt Smith,
32:37he dives to the pile and scores, and Emmitt Smith is in the end zone
32:41to give the Cowboys a 16-3 lead.
32:44Randall Cunningham replaced Pete,
32:47and Barry Switzer sent his pass rushers
32:50at the ill-prepared quarterback from every angle.
32:53The Cowboys win the game, and the Eagles win the game.
32:56The Cowboys win the game, and the Eagles win the game.
32:59The Cowboys win the game, and the Eagles win the game.
33:03Cunningham, who was sacked four times,
33:06had missed several practices witnessing the birth of his first child,
33:10and while that delivery was successful,
33:13most of the others were not.
33:33The Eagles had finally hit the wall,
33:36a wall made up of Cowboy All-Pros
33:39who capped the round with one last brilliant moment.
33:45Pump fake, lob to the end zone for Michael Irwin.
33:48Touchdown, Cowboys!
33:50Oh, man, that's good stuff! Really good stuff!
33:53Touchdown!
33:55Touchdown!
34:01By crushing the Eagles,
34:03the Cowboys reached the NFC Championship
34:06for the fourth straight year,
34:08but for the first time this decade,
34:11it would be played against Green Bay and not the 49ers.
34:15We got one more game,
34:17and we hope that we can play our best game.
34:19I mean, everybody was focused.
34:21We had a good week of practice. Everything was solid.
34:23You know, we was looking good, smelling good, feeling good,
34:27so everything went good.
34:29Luckily, I don't think anybody really got injured because of this game.
34:33Everybody's still pretty fresh, I believe,
34:36and hopefully Green Bay is a little tired.
34:42From Texas, Maine, deep in the heart of the Lone Star State,
34:47Ladies and gentlemen,
34:50let's get ready to rumble!
35:01Let's go, Dad! Let's go! Let's get it on!
35:05With the Playmaker and primetime leading the cheers,
35:09Texas Stadium was roaring with noise that could wake the dead.
35:15We don't kick some tails.
35:17Personal battles, right?
35:18It's like a quarterfinisher.
35:19Knock the seven, get off, make tackles, play ball.
35:22That's all. That's all.
35:29After holding the Packers to an early field goal,
35:32the bright lights of Dallas flashed neon.
35:36Pass over the middle, caught by Deion Sanders.
35:3840, 35, 30, 25, down to the 20,
35:41still running, 15, to the 10,
35:43out of bounds at the nine-yard line.
35:45Sanders doing the dance all the way down the field.
35:47He's hard to keep up with.
35:49And it was hard to defend against a team loaded with
35:52big-name, big-game players,
35:54who continually come through when they are needed the most.
35:58Michael Irvin!
36:07Barb on the screen, throws,
36:09intercepted by Leon, landed at the 11-yard line,
36:11and the Cowboys have the ball, the big catch!
36:14We rollin', baby!
36:15We rollin'!
36:16Are we rollin'?
36:17We rollin'!
36:18No matter, we rollin'!
36:19We rollin'!
36:20We rollin'!
36:21Brett Barb's got to settle down.
36:22He's just making some terrible throws right now.
36:24Come on, positive yards now.
36:26We need the six!
36:27We need the six!
36:34Close to Michael Irvin,
36:35caught by Michael Irvin,
36:36touchdown, Michael Irvin!
36:38The Cowboys have taken a 13-to-3 lead.
36:45Green Bay absorbed the early punches,
36:48then responded with two long touchdowns
36:51to climb back in the game.
36:55Keith Jackson!
36:56Touchdown!
36:57And a bullet down the middle,
36:59and the Packers have come back to lead the ballgame.
37:02There's always a spark in the eyes of the Great Ones,
37:06and with the Cowboys pinned on their own one-yard line,
37:09Emmitt Smith showed why he is pro football's
37:12best big-game running back.
37:24The drive was vintage cowboy offense,
37:27powered by the talented Dallas Trinity
37:29of Smith, Aikman, and Irvin.
37:42On second and goal,
37:43Dallas finished off their 99-yard masterpiece.
37:49Smith again, blocking again,
37:51and Emmitt scores this time,
37:53and the Cowboys have taken the lead
37:55with the Emmitt Smith touchdown,
37:57with 24 seconds remaining in the first half.
38:01But by the end of the third period,
38:03the Cowboys trailed by three.
38:05Yet while the visitors held the edge on the scoreboard,
38:08they were losing ground in the trenches.
38:11The Packer defenders were fading fast,
38:13pounded by the Cowboys' talented offensive line,
38:17and conned up by Jay Novacek,
38:19who ran through and over the Green Bay secondary.
38:28Translated to English, it means touchdown.
38:32To the end zone, touchdown Cowboys.
38:34Oh, look at that hole.
38:36They went on the left side that time.
38:38Eric Williams, Larry Allen, and Mark Tuanae
38:41all held their blocks.
38:43Nate Newton rolled off a combination block
38:45to pick up one linebacker,
38:47while fullback Daryl Johnston nailed another.
38:52And the Cowboys are back in front again.
38:56My goodness, what a hole was opened up.
39:00Nothing more than precise timing and teamwork.
39:04After all, it was the fourth quarter,
39:06the business end of the football game.
39:09And that's when the Cowboys did their best work.
39:12Time for the knockout punch.
39:13Time for the knockout punch, huh?
39:15Time for the knockout punch.
39:19Roll to the right for Favre, he sets up, pump fake.
39:22Now goes way down the field, intercepted by the Cowboys.
39:25Larry Brown to the 30, 40, 45, 50.
39:29Well, this is a strange decision by Brett Favre,
39:32but he kind of flies it back to the old Brett Favre.
39:35When he gets out of the pocket,
39:36that's what the Cowboys were concerned about,
39:39and then he just telegraphed it.
39:40I mean, there wasn't any doubt where that ball was going.
39:45Allen will have the ball at midfield,
39:47and that is a big hurt right there.
39:50Nail in the coffin. Nail in the coffin.
39:53We'll see if it's the play of the game.
39:55Aikman first down for the Cowboys, 47.
39:57Going for a punch to Michael Irvin.
39:59They're dancing. Irvin catches the ball to 25,
40:01to the 20, to the 15, and out of bounds.
40:04One more scope in. One more scope.
40:10The Cowboys are in the running formation
40:12with Kendall Watkins in motion, out of the eye.
40:14Hand off Emmitt Smith at the 15, to the 10, he'll score.
40:17Emmitt Smith dances to the end zone.
40:20The Cowboys have taken a two-score lead.
40:23Boy, the Cowboys just stick it at them.
40:26They just stick it at them after the Larry Brown interception.
40:32Two minutes, baby. We there. Two minutes.
40:36In the final moments, Brett Favre collapsed under a sea of sacks,
40:40three in a row.
40:51Green Bay's season was over,
40:53but not that of the Super Bowl-bound Cowboys.
40:56We're going again. We're going again, baby.
41:04You said it the best, Terry. They're not mine.
41:06If we get three, they're this team.
41:08They're Aikman's and Emmitt's and Harry Quinton's.
41:13Perhaps the conference title was cherished most by Barry Switzer,
41:17who saluted his players for both their hard work and their loyalty.
41:22Y'all are a beautiful, beautiful football team.
41:25Let's go.
41:26Y'all are tremendous, and I really appreciate some of the things
41:30that you guys said to me personally, some of you players in the ballgame.
41:33It really means a lot to me. It really does.
41:35And I want to thank our coaching staff.
41:37I want to thank these guys that all we have to put up with
41:41and all the people outside.
41:43Hey, they're loyal.
41:45They stuck with me and fought their rear ends off,
41:47and I believe in them, and they believe in me.
41:50Hold on. I got something to say, man.
41:52I ain't said nothing all year.
41:54You know, man, I went last year. It ain't the same.
41:59That's right.
42:00Y'all dudes are unbelievable, man, the way y'all have accepted me
42:02and embraced me, let me be me.
42:04This team is unbelievable, man.
42:06Ain't no jealousy, ain't no envy from nobody.
42:08How you been?
42:10How you been?
42:13How you been?
42:23Dallas! Dallas! Dallas!
42:29Here we go, Steelers! Here we go!
42:32Here we go, Steelers! Here we go!
42:35In a battle of four-time Super Bowl champions,
42:38the Steelers charged into Super Bowl XXX,
42:40hoping to recapture past glory,
42:43while the Cowboys looked to make history
42:46with their third Super Bowl title in four seasons.
42:52With Dallas' cast of stars taking center stage,
42:55this would surpass all other Super Bowls
42:58as the most watched event in television history.
43:09We've come too far. We've overcome too much.
43:12Remember what we say.
43:14Toys, 60 minutes, and physical.
43:18Hey, it's been a long time coming,
43:20but we're finally here.
43:22Let's go out here and play a complete game.
43:24Let's go from the Alpha to the Omega.
43:27Let's go out here, kick these Pittsburgh Steelers' ass
43:30up and down the field, and go home and enjoy them for a full year.
43:34Hey!
43:39In the opening quarter, the Cowboys' dynamic offense
43:43came out firing with power and precision.
43:49Lineman-like guard Larry Allen
43:52overpowered Greg Lloyd and the Steelers.
43:55Big hole, 50, down the middle of the field,
43:5830, 28-yard line, big run for Emmitt Smith.
44:02That hole was wide open over Nate Newton and Mark Tewoday.
44:07Well, the game's starting out just the way the Cowboys wanted it to, obviously.
44:11They've got the pass to Michael Irvin for big yardage.
44:14They run Emmitt Smith on that left side.
44:16It just pops open.
44:20Lloyd and the Steelers looked overmatched and outmanned.
44:25Deion Sanders, wide right. Michael Irvin, wide left.
44:28Aikman straight back to pass in the middle of the Super Bowl XXX insignia.
44:31Throws the bomb to Deion Sanders.
44:34And prime time makes a 47-yard prime catch of a Troy Aikman bomb.
44:41Novacek is a flanker right and Johnston in motion.
44:43Fake handoff, Aikman to pass on first and goal from the three.
44:47Wide open, Jay Novacek, touchdown!
44:50And I think the one thing the Steelers didn't want to have happen has happened.
44:54They're down 10-0.
44:56A lot of football left. Let's go. Let's go. A lot of football.
45:00The Cowboys nearly took a 17-0 lead midway through the second quarter.
45:05Throws down the middle to Michael Irvin.
45:07Touchdown, Cowboys! There's a flag on the play.
45:10It is against Dallas.
45:12Grabbed the shirt. He grabbed the shirt.
45:17Michael Irvin did grab Carnell Lake's shirt.
45:20And though the Cowboys had to settle for a field goal,
45:23Irvin had no dispute over the call.
45:27I grabbed it. Boom.
45:29He was going for the ball.
45:31I knew. I knew. I came after the ball.
45:33I knew that. You know what I'm saying?
45:35I'm saying a good call. Thank you.
45:36I'm on your side, baby.
45:39With Dallas ahead 13-0, the Steelers' defense finally tightened.
45:44Come on, defense. Let's go, baby. Let's go.
45:47It spurred corralled Emmitt Smith and the Cowboys' running game
45:51as the two defenses began to set a physical tone for the day.
45:57All right. Hey, hey, hey.
46:00Let's go now. Come on.
46:06O'Donnell's getting a lot of pressure,
46:08and he's not getting rid of that football to get out of trouble.
46:13O'Donnell and the Steelers were down but not ready to be counted out.
46:17We can still run it now. We got some time.
46:20We just got to get a score here, and we'll be in good shape.
46:22With twilight approaching at the end of the half,
46:25the Steelers finally began showing a spark of life.
46:38Come on, Steelers.
46:43Bam Morris dancing, skipping, gliding off that right side.
46:47He gives him a little bam-a-ram, a little niftiness does he,
46:51and he takes a nine to the 30-yard line.
46:53Let's go.
46:56Four-man rush.
46:57O'Donnell fires for the end zone, and the pass is caught.
47:04With the football is Ernie Mills.
47:06That was a sweet catch, was it not?
47:09With 13 seconds left in the half, the Steelers finally got on the board.
47:14First and goal at the six. Slant pattern for the goal line.
47:17Touchdown, Steelers!
47:18Steelers pulling the ball in.
47:20It's Gatsy Thickpen, his first playoff touchdown reception,
47:24and this place is on fire.
47:26We might have something now.
47:28This Super Bowl game is on.
47:32In the second half of Super Bowl XXX,
47:34a quiet Dallas cornerback stepped into a primetime spotlight of his own
47:39and produced the game's first turnover.
47:42Out of the shotgun, O'Donnell on third and nine.
47:44Here come the Cowboys.
47:46Intercepted by Larry Brown to the 50, to the 40, down to the 30.
47:50High stance, still on his feet to the 20 with a helicopter move,
47:53and he goes out of bounds.
47:55And the shame of it is O'Donnell threw it right to him.
47:57There was no receiver out there.
47:59And that is a real harmful play to the Steeler cause.
48:04That's how you play, Larry.
48:06That's how you play, baby.
48:07Put confidence.
48:08Ball just sailed a little bit.
48:11Hot, hot.
48:13Emmitt Smith behind Aikman.
48:14Fakes to Smith.
48:15Play action.
48:16Roll to the right.
48:17Aikman has all day.
48:18Fires.
48:19Caught.
48:20Michael Irvin out of bounds.
48:21And what a throw by Aikman on the dead run.
48:23And Dallas is knocking at the door.
48:24Shane Novacek tied in on the left.
48:26Hand off Emmitt Smith.
48:27He gets close to the plane at the goal line.
48:32Touchdown, Cowboys.
48:34Hey, let's go.
48:35A lot of football.
48:36A lot of football.
48:37Let's go.
48:38Here we go, Steelers.
48:40Here we go.
48:41I'd like to hammer it right down him right now.
48:43Right down the face.
48:45Let's go.
48:46Right down the mouth.
48:51Bill Cowher's Steelers did hammer away with Bam Morris, the basher.
48:58And they also mixed things up with Cordell Stewart, the slasher.
49:03Cowher was the youngest head coach in a Super Bowl.
49:06Yet he was wise enough to know that to beat Dallas, he had to take chances.
49:11Well, now we'll see how Bill Cowher decides to play it.
49:14Don't tell me about punting it, because we're going to do it.
49:17And it's hooked.
49:18It's hooked into Ernie Mills.
49:20Hand off.
49:21Goes to Bam Morris.
49:22He didn't make it.
49:23He did not make it.
49:24No, it's my decision not to punt it.
49:28It's all on you.
49:31You can't make up yards if you're down by 13 points.
49:36You don't deserve to win a championship.
49:39Two shots.
49:41Cowher refused to second guess himself.
49:44Is that the right thinking?
49:46I don't know, but that's my thinking.
49:48Instead, he shifted strategy.
49:50Neil O'Donnell threw 32 times in the second half,
49:53but the Cowboys are a team accustomed to protecting a lead and their turf.
50:07Dallas' defense forced Pittsburgh to settle for a field goal.
50:13Good snap.
50:14Ball down.
50:15A normal kick is on its way.
50:16That kick has height.
50:18It's got distance, and it's got accuracy.
50:2146-yard field goal.
50:23Hey, Dick, I'm going onside here.
50:28Don't leave anything in the bag.
50:31Kevin Williams and Brock Marriott are the two deep.
50:33And the Steelers try an onside kick.
50:36And they got it.
50:37And a man running with a football at the 50.
50:39It is out of bounds on the far sideline.
50:41Daring strategy by the Deerfield Cowher.
50:45Cowher power.
50:46Let's go.
50:47Let's go.
50:48Come on, baby.
50:50Yeah.
50:51We're going to win this, baby.
50:52We're going to win this.
50:53It's a great call.
50:54It's a great call.
50:55Hey, you got nothing to lose.
50:57You know what?
50:58You know why?
50:59Because I trust you guys are deep.
51:00That's why I want to throw a fourth down here.
51:02I trust you guys are deep.
51:03I trust you guys are deep.
51:06Cowher's gamble yielded dividends.
51:08But everything gained against Dallas comes with a punishing price.
51:14The Steelers absorbed a season's worth of hits in the second half.
51:17But their resiliency helped pull them within three points late in the fourth quarter.
51:21Hands off for the Steeler touchdown.
51:23And we got a dandy in Super Bowl XXX.
51:26That was a gutsy call on the onside there, right?
51:29Great call.
51:30Great.
51:31Close.
51:33Got us into the game.
51:35And so did the Steelers' defense.
51:38Their second half resurrection limited the Cowboys to just 61 total yards.
51:44The colorful spectacle that is the Super Bowl was developing a black and gold hue.
51:49But eventually it would turn brown.
51:51Larry Brown leaving the terrible Towles to dry tears.
51:55Midway, baby.
51:56Midway, dude.
51:58Out of the shotgun and four wide receiver.
52:00Here's a pass in the flag.
52:01Picked up by the Cowboys.
52:02Larry Brown may score at the 30, 20, 10.
52:14If you get one more, you can run for mayor.
52:17I'll vote for you, Doc, as long as you give me a job.
52:21Second and goal from the four.
52:23Watkins in motion.
52:24Hand off Emmitt Smith on the right-hand side.
52:26Touchdown.
52:27Emmitt Smith scores.
52:28And Dallas, your Cowboys are world champions again.
52:31The Dallas Cowboys and their fans can celebrate being the team of the 90s now.
52:42For the Cowboys, this game was symbolic of their season.
52:46They dominated early with their superstars.
52:49They struggled and faced adversity as they went along.
52:52But they always believed in themselves.
52:55And they triumphed.
52:56Winning their fifth Super Bowl title and third in the last four years.
53:06The 1995 Dallas Cowboys are an honor to the team's glorious past.
53:12And the world champions of football's present.
53:27Oh, what fun it would be, by the dawn's early light.
53:41What so proudly we hailed, at the twilight's last gleaming.
53:52Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight.
54:01O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming.
54:10And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air.
54:20Gave proof through the night, that our flag was still there.
54:32Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave.
54:43O'er the land of the free, and the home of the brave.
55:13Star Spangled Banner
55:43Star Spangled Banner
56:13Star Spangled Banner
56:23Star Spangled Banner
