00:00In this world, there is real evil, in the darkest shadows and in the most ordinary places.
00:13These are the true stories of the innocent and the unimaginable.
00:20Newlyweds Bill and Icy Spencer are elated when they find the perfect apartment in a
00:24quaint Seattle neighborhood.
00:26Their hopes for the future are soon shattered when they are confronted by the supernatural.
00:33Intruders of a dark history hold them captive, making them the victims of their violent rage.
00:45Between the world we see and the things we fear, there are doors when they are opened.
00:54Nightmares become reality.
01:07The famous Space Needle towers above Seattle, Washington, a symbol of the hopes and dreams
01:14of those mariners and mill workers who founded this city more than 150 years ago.
01:20It was a place where people came to make a fresh start, escape from the past.
01:27But for some, the past is not easily buried.
01:31It clings like a lonely shadow and reappears when least expected.
01:42October 2004.
01:43I'm never going to pass this midterm.
01:44What's with the negativity?
01:45You've got to have a positive attitude, my friend.
01:46I have a positive attitude.
01:47I'm positive I'm going to fail.
01:55Marissa Spencer, known to her friends as Icy, is a graduate student working toward a master's
02:00degree in mental health.
02:02So, how is married life?
02:04You know, we've been so busy.
02:06Icy's been married for a couple of months now and eagerly welcomes this new phase in
02:10her life.
02:11It's been really great.
02:12Everything's exciting.
02:13Everything seemed to be in that stage that you're trying to get to know all these things
02:17about this person.
02:19We were having a lot of fun.
02:21It was an adventure.
02:22Speak of the devil.
02:23Hey, honey.
02:24Her husband, Bill, is also a student, studying for his bachelor's degree.
02:32At night, Bill works as a contractor for a local courier company.
02:35I didn't mean to tear you away, but I found this apartment and it looks great, so I set
02:39up an appointment for us to see it later.
02:41Wow, this does look promising.
02:43Yeah.
02:44Is it okay if I steal it away from you?
02:45Please.
02:46Maybe when I see you next, you'll have a new apartment.
02:47Let's hope.
02:48I'll see you later.
02:51Bill is anxious to leave the university district, having grown tired of the rowdy college lifestyle.
02:57It's more of a party atmosphere.
02:59It's not really the best atmosphere for a young married couple.
03:02This almost looks too good to be true.
03:05A little jinxing now.
03:06I know.
03:07I'm just so ready to start our new lives in some new place, away from all of this.
03:13I got a good feeling about this one.
03:14I know.
03:15I'm so sick of our apartment now.
03:16We wanted to go to an area that was more quiet, more of a traditional family setting.
03:24When the Spencers arrive at the apartment complex, they notice a pile of debris right
03:29in front of the building.
03:38Hi.
03:39You must be the Spencers.
03:40Yeah.
03:41Hi, I'm Bill.
03:43And I'm your wife.
03:44It's Marissa, right?
03:45Yes, but everybody calls me Icy.
03:46Well, Bill, Icy, I really apologize for the mess out front.
03:49It's not normally like this.
03:50We're finishing up renovations on the apartment today.
03:52What, the apartment for rent?
03:54Yeah.
03:55The previous tenants...
03:56The building manager told us that the former tenant left it in a bit of a, in a hurry,
04:02and it wasn't looking very nice, so they decided to rip everything apart and just basically
04:09rebuild it inside.
04:10It says in the ad, all new fixtures.
04:12Oh, yeah.
04:13Whoever gets this gets a brand new one-bedroom apartment.
04:15Shall we go have a look?
04:16Yeah, sounds good.
04:17Come on.
04:24The renovations will be complete today, and after that, the place will be ready for new
04:28tenants.
04:29To get a nice, you know, newly remodeled apartment in a great area of town for not a lot of money
04:40was truly a stroke of luck, it seemed at the time.
04:44The place has everything the young couple is looking for, yet Bill can't help but feel
04:59apprehensive.
05:00There was something about the apartment that didn't seem right to me.
05:04So how does it look in here?
05:07Everything seems to be okay.
05:09That's it?
05:10Don't you think this place is perfect?
05:14It's pretty good.
05:15Pretty good?
05:16It's going to be like we're living in a brand new place.
05:19It's in our price range, too.
05:23What's wrong?
05:24You don't like it?
05:25No, no, it's not that.
05:28You know what, you're right.
05:29I just can't believe we found a place this nice this soon, that's all.
05:32But you're right, it's perfect.
05:34So you like it.
05:35I didn't say anything because I, well, it kind of seemed silly to turn down a perfect
05:40apartment for, you know, a feeling.
05:43What are we waiting for?
05:56The following week, the Spencers move in.
06:01Icy works on transforming the apartment into a home.
06:13I felt like I wasn't alone.
06:34It just felt so eerie.
06:43Icy convinces herself that her mind is just playing tricks on her.
06:53I thought, we're just moving in, we have all this stress, I'm just tense, I haven't
06:58slept in days, so maybe I'm just not used to this place.
07:03Days pass, and Icy, preoccupied with her new role as a wife, puts the incident out
07:16of her mind.
07:20That weekend, Bill tells Icy that they deserve a much-needed break and announces that he's
07:25taking her out for the night.
07:33What are you doing?
07:43Well, you are full of surprises, aren't you?
07:45I told you we could afford it.
07:46Get the blanket.
08:03To us.
08:10You were right.
08:11About what?
08:12You did get us the best table in town.
08:17I felt very fulfilled at that time.
08:19It just signified a new beginning for me.
08:25I was so happy.
08:26I was so happy.
08:27I was so happy.
08:28I was so happy.
08:29I was so happy.
08:30I was so happy.
08:31I was so happy.
08:32It just signified a new beginning.
08:33We were very excited about it.
08:39The next morning, Bill rises early and lets Icy sleep in.
08:45For the first time in weeks, the couple has no classes, work, or unpacking to worry about.
09:02Just out of the corner of my eye, some figure was moving.
09:12Whoa.
09:13Chuffy this morning?
09:14No, he didn't hear you come in.
09:15You startled me, that's all.
09:16So, what's going on outside?
09:17It's nothing.
09:18So, what do you want for breakfast, huh?
09:19Coffee sounds good.
09:20You're too good to me.
09:21I'm not a good cook.
09:22I'm not a good cook.
09:23I'm not a good cook.
09:24I'm not a good cook.
09:25I'm not a good cook.
09:26I'm not a good cook.
09:27I'm not a good cook.
09:28I'm not a good cook.
09:29I'm not a good cook.
09:30I'm not a good cook.
09:32You're too good to me.
09:37I really wasn't that concerned with it.
09:39There didn't seem to be anything to it other than just creepiness.
10:02A month after they move in, the Spencers finally feel settled in the apartment.
10:16Icy can now concentrate on her schoolwork.
10:29Honey?
10:30You're home early.
10:31I'll have dinner ready in a second.
10:32I just have to fire off this email to my professor.
10:44Bill?
10:46What are you doing?
10:52There was somebody in front of the door.
10:54In front of me.
11:00In front of me.
11:01In front of me.
11:02In front of me.
11:03In front of me.
11:04In front of me.
11:05In front of me.
11:06In front of me.
11:07In front of me.
11:08In front of me.
11:09In front of me.
11:10In front of me.
11:11In front of me.
11:12In front of me.
11:13In front of me.
11:14In front of me.
11:15In front of me.
11:16In front of me.
11:17In front of me.
11:18In front of me.
11:19In front of me.
11:20In front of me.
11:21In front of me.
11:22In front of me.
11:23In front of me.
11:24In front of me.
11:25In front of me.
11:26In front of me.
11:27In front of me.
11:28In front of me.
11:29In front of me.
11:30In front of me.
11:31In front of me.
11:32In front of me.
11:33In front of me.
11:34In front of me.
11:35In front of me.
11:36In front of me.
11:37In front of me.
11:38In front of me.
11:39In front of me.
11:40In front of me.
11:41In front of me.
11:42In front of me.
11:43In front of me.
11:44In front of me.
11:45In front of me.
11:46In front of me.
11:47In front of me.
11:48In front of me.
11:49In front of me.
11:50In front of me.
11:51In front of me.
11:52In front of me.
11:53In front of me.
11:54In front of me.
11:55In front of me.
11:56In front of me.
11:57In front of me.
11:58In front of me.
11:59In front of me.
12:00In front of me.
12:01In front of me.
12:02In front of me.
12:03In front of me.
12:04In front of me.
12:05In front of me.
12:06In front of me.
12:07In front of me.
12:08In front of me.
12:09In front of me.
12:10In front of me.
12:11In front of me.
12:12In front of me.
12:13In front of me.
12:14In front of me.
12:15In front of me.
12:16In front of me.
12:17In front of me.
12:18In front of me.
12:19In front of me.
12:20In front of me.
12:21In front of me.
12:22In front of me.
12:23In front of me.
12:24In front of me.
12:25In front of me.
12:26In front of me.
12:27I just didn't think it could be true.
12:29It's not rational.
12:30But I know in the back of my mind that there was something there.
12:33I just didn't want to admit it.
12:46Hey, how's your day?
12:48Huh?
12:50I said, how's your day?
12:53What's the matter?
12:58I need to tell you something.
13:00But I'm afraid you're going to think I'm crazy.
13:02Anything's possible.
13:04This isn't funny, Bill.
13:06Alright, alright, try me.
13:08Something's going on in this apartment.
13:11I don't know exactly what it is, but I've got the strangest feeling that...
13:16That what?
13:18That we're not alone.
13:19What are you talking about?
13:21I've been seeing things through the corner of my eye, like shadows or something going past the doorways.
13:26She was certainly afraid and certainly concerned about what she had seen.
13:31And a little panicky.
13:33As soon as I look up, they're gone.
13:35I don't know what you're seeing, but I'm sure everything's fine.
13:38I thought initially that it was an overreaction.
13:41I thought it might have been just a run-of-the-mill, typical, standard story where things go bump in the night.
13:48Have you considered the fact that you're at a computer all day?
13:51I kind of downplayed everything, thinking that it's not that big a deal.
13:55It's just my imagination.
13:56No, no, what I'm saying is your eyes are tired and they're probably playing tricks on you.
14:00I'm sorry. It's silly, I know.
14:03No, it's not silly. It's just, you know, I'm here, so don't worry about it, okay?
14:08He was so reassuring.
14:10He wanted everything to be okay.
14:12So I felt like I was over-dramatizing.
14:16October turns to November.
14:19And Icy is still on edge.
14:23She doesn't like to be in the apartment alone.
14:26But Icy no longer feels that she can talk with her husband about it.
14:31I didn't feel like he was really listening to me.
14:34He was just, oh, it'll be okay, it'll be okay.
14:38She avoids going home after class, killing time at a local coffee shop until Bill gets off work.
14:46I tried to stay out as much as I could because I just could not bear the feelings I was having in that apartment.
15:04Eventually, Icy has no other choice but to return to the apartment.
15:45What's for dinner?
15:47Don't sneak up on me like that.
15:49Sorry, I thought you heard me. I got off work.
15:52Oh, you're not even going to say hello?
15:58You know, I thought about your work today.
16:00The funniest thing happened when we started laughing so hard that we all started to remember.
16:04When you...
16:05Excuse me.
16:06Excuse me.
16:07Excuse me.
16:08Excuse me.
16:09Excuse me.
16:10Excuse me.
16:11Excuse me.
16:12Excuse me.
16:13Excuse me.
16:14When you...
16:15Could you just give me a little room here?
16:17What's the matter with you?
16:19I've got to finish making dinner.
16:21And I've got this huge exam that I still haven't studied for, but I think it's just great that you're having so much fun at work.
16:26Her attitudes seemed to change.
16:29She went from being, you know, fun and outgoing and cheerful to being more withdrawn, kind of moody.
16:36You know, it was quite disturbing.
16:38That's a little obnoxious, and I think you're overreacting a bit.
16:41That's your answer for everything.
16:43I'm overreacting now just like I'm overreacting about whatever the hell is in our house?
16:47Is that what this is about?
16:48Yes, that's what this is all about.
16:50I thought we were past all this.
16:52That's easy for you to say.
16:53You're never home.
16:55I don't know what you want me to do.
16:57I want to know that you're taking this seriously.
17:00Why can't you just let this drop?
17:03Fine.
17:05You know what? I'm not hungry anymore.
17:07You want dinner, make it yourself.
17:10It seemed like my wife was blaming me for not having answers or solutions for what was going on.
17:17It was very frustrating to not be able to come up with something.
17:24That night, Bill and Icy go to bed angry at each other and do not speak until the following evening.
17:37Hey, Mrs. Spesser.
17:39Are you all right?
17:40No, I'm sorry.
17:42I've just been off lately.
17:44Not myself.
17:46You were right.
17:47No, no, look. You were right.
17:48I've been kind of a jerk lately.
17:50No.
17:51No, I have, all right?
17:52You don't have to sugarcoat it for me.
17:53I can take it.
18:09Much better, isn't it?
18:10Much.
18:12Was it our first fight?
18:14Ah, the first ugly domestic squirm, yeah, I think so.
18:18And hey, we survived.
18:20I suppose we did.
18:22Hey, why don't you take a break from your studying tonight, okay?
18:26And we can get some leftovers for dinner and pop in a movie and just relax.
18:31What do you say?
18:32Well, okay.
18:40Bill, what is it?
18:43Stay here. I'll be right back.
19:39What is it? What happened?
20:04I saw somebody go down the hall into the bathroom and whoever it was,
20:08it just disappeared.
20:10I saw a tall, thin, dark figure.
20:14It was unnerving because I went into the bathroom and it wasn't there.
20:19What did he look like?
20:21I don't know. It was like a shadow of a person.
20:24Oh, my God.
20:25That's the same thing that I've seen.
20:28What are we going to do?
20:30What can we do, all right? It was nothing.
20:33Oh, God, Bill.
20:35You know there's something in this apartment with us.
20:37God.
20:38I wasn't that sure that I really believed in ghosts at that time.
20:41It just didn't seem, it doesn't seem rational.
20:46I can't keep pretending that there's nothing wrong.
20:50You're making me feel like I'm crazy and I know I'm not.
20:57Where are you going?
20:59I don't know. I've got to get out of here.
21:02All right, I'm going to come with you.
21:14That night, the Spencers find refuge at a local coffee shop.
21:19There, Bill finally realizes that Icy's fears are valid
21:23and agrees that they must do something.
21:27There was certainly no denying that, you know,
21:30we had both seen figures in the apartment
21:33and we quickly realized we both wanted out of that apartment.
21:38No matter how much Bill and Icy want to leave their apartment,
21:42they know they are tied to it.
21:45We had nowhere to go.
21:47We needed help.
21:49So we went online and searched
21:52and we found the Washington State Ghost Society.
21:55Seattle.
22:00The next day at the Washington Ghost Society,
22:04Shannon Stidman comes across the email from the Spencers.
22:09Stidman has been a paranormal investigator for over six years
22:12and has witnessed supernatural events.
22:16Even still, she broaches each message with caution.
22:21A lot of things can be mistaken for paranormal phenomena.
22:25So we like to take our time and make sure that they're credible
22:28and that we're really dealing with a ghost.
22:31In her response, Stidman outlines the basic steps
22:34that she gives to all potential clients.
22:37Our advice initially was for them to keep logs of the activity,
22:40to keep in touch with us so we could monitor the situation,
22:43see if things would get worse, get better, stabilize.
22:47If there is indeed a presence in their home and the activity escalates,
22:50Stidman knows that it's only a matter of time
22:53before they will hear from the Spencers again.
23:00Oddly enough, over the next month,
23:03Bill and Icy no longer sense a presence lurking in the shadows.
23:12Promise me next time you're going to try really hard not to cheat.
23:15Cheat? Are you calling me a cheater?
23:18You better believe it.
23:20I think someone's just a sore loser.
23:22Can't take being beat by a girl.
23:24Oh, yeah, yeah, it's killing me.
23:39Leave us alone!
23:41This is our home!
23:43We're trespassing! Go away!
24:13Please, please, don't kill me!
24:44I saw him. I saw his face.
24:47A teenage boy.
24:50It really looked like he had been hurt pretty bad.
24:53It looked like his face had been severely damaged by something.
24:58What do you mean, a boy? How?
25:01I saw him. I saw his face.
25:04A teenage boy.
25:07It really looked like he had been hurt pretty bad.
25:11What do you mean, a boy? How?
25:14I don't know. Somehow I could see him.
25:17You're going to think I'm crazy, but I don't think that he's evil.
25:23Well, it doesn't make it any less creepy.
25:26I don't want this thing in our home.
25:29I know, I know, but I just get the feeling he's trying to tell us something.
25:40Although the presence does not threaten the couple, Icy feels trapped.
25:46I had nowhere else to go, and it was pretty horrible to live that way.
25:51It just felt really desperate.
26:10Bill?
26:40Please! You've got to help me!
26:55There's something in my apartment. Please, you've got to believe me!
26:59I was living in a nightmare.
27:25Icy begins to feel helpless and desperate,
27:28believing there is no way out of this apartment.
27:33I'm a strong person, but I felt like I was losing control over everything in my life.
27:38I just felt like death was all around me.
27:41The whole apartment felt like it was a huge crypt.
27:52By December, only two months after moving into the apartment,
27:56Icy becomes physically and emotionally exhausted.
28:00I totally felt like I was becoming somebody else.
28:05Like I was moving under a spell.
28:11She is unable to keep up with the demands of school,
28:15sending her deeper into depression.
28:18I would be thinking these horrible things.
28:22I felt like hurting myself.
28:25I was always sad. I felt like it was so unbearable.
28:30Hey, Icy.
28:33I'm sorry.
28:35How did it stay on the funnel?
28:37Let it go.
28:41At that point, I wasn't really talking much to anybody.
28:44I was avoiding people.
28:47I didn't want them to think that I was nuts.
28:54That night.
28:59Where have you been?
29:00You know, you should have been home hours ago.
29:01You could have at least called, told me where you were.
29:03I've been worried sick.
29:11I just flunked my exam, okay?
29:13That means I flunked the class.
29:15Icy.
29:16Oh, Icy, on what exactly?
29:33Get out.
29:34Get out of our house.
29:35Leave us alone.
29:36Do you understand me?
29:37I said get out.
29:52My chest.
29:55All of a sudden, it was as if somebody had put out a lit cigarette on my chest.
30:01Ugh.
30:24Bill and Icy flee the apartment, terrified by the violent intruder.
30:30Both of us were only concerned with getting out of that place right then and there.
30:35It could strike any time.
30:37There was nothing that we could do to defend ourselves against whatever this was.
30:42They contact the Washington Ghost Society again.
30:45But this time, the Spencers hope to convince them that they are truly victims of the paranormal.
30:52That day, investigator Shannon Stidman meets with the frightened couple.
30:57It certainly seems like a lot has gone on since that first email you sent.
31:01What struck me most about Bill and Icy's story was that events were escalating.
31:06It was becoming dangerous to live there.
31:09So that's when we got involved.
31:11I have a few theories about what I think might be going on, based upon what you've told me so far.
31:17One of the first things that you mentioned was that the apartment had been renovated.
31:21That stuck out to me from the very beginning.
31:23Is that important?
31:25Stidman believes that any entities trapped in the apartment could have been unleashed during recent renovations.
31:31Any time you tear apart a structure, it disturbs the psychic energy.
31:36Renovations in a haunted house either make the hauntings go away entirely, or they make them worse.
31:42And in this case, it seems to have contributed to the activity.
31:47A common theme in hauntings is that something traumatic happened.
31:56The image seen by Bill was a sign that there was something definitely going on in there.
32:04Something very powerful, something very strong.
32:10Why attack Bill? We've been there for weeks and nothing like this has ever happened.
32:15Stidman explains that some entities feed on emotions such as fear and anger.
32:22You should have been home hours ago. You could have at least called and told me where you were.
32:27The negative energy gives them the ability to intensify the activity.
32:32Is that what this is about? Yes, that's what this is all about.
32:35I thought we were past all this. You're never home. Just let this drop.
32:39If they start to become afraid of it, their energy will feed the entity.
32:45It will do something more dramatic, and it's just a matter of time before something harms them physically in some way.
32:51So what do we do now? We go back.
32:54No, no, no, no, no. I can't go back there.
32:58But we need you there in case the investigators have questions.
33:02Icy is scared, but she realizes that this may be the only way to take back some control.
33:09It's like I was at their mercy. I just didn't want these things to defeat me.
33:15Okay, we'll go back. But I'm not setting a foot in that apartment.
33:29Hours later, the ghost hunters arrive.
33:34They hope to document any strange activity, so they can better understand what is occurring in the Spencer's apartment.
33:44The investigative team includes two paranormal specialists and medium Lois Lee.
33:50I first started suspecting that I had psychic abilities when I was in my late teens.
33:55When I got a little bit older, I was able to describe ghosts that were in houses.
34:03Is that the psychic? Yes, but I prefer that you stay right here and have no contact with her until after she's finished her investigation of the house and grounds.
34:10We want her to be totally unbiased.
34:12The psychic goes in knowing nothing. We do not want her to be influenced by what we already know.
34:18We want to be sure that any vibes she gets, any impressions she gets, are from her, not from things that she's been told.
34:26Can I have the key?
34:40Lois aids investigators by providing a shortcut to the past, sometimes even communicating with the spirits.
34:56My procedure is to go into a place and start putting my hands on the walls or objects in the room to try and be able to see into the past.
35:06The images come to me pretty naturally.
35:10If I'm focusing hard enough, they can become so real that it's almost like they are there.
35:20I didn't feel anything.
35:22I didn't have my usual sensations that there was a spirit there.
35:35Please, don't hurt me.
35:50He was such a pathetic figure, young, maybe about 18, 17 years old, and I felt so sorry for him.
35:59Please don't kill me. Please don't kill me.
36:01Don't worry, I won't hurt you.
36:06Then, another feeling, menacing and dark, begins to overwhelm her.
36:13I started to feel myself changing.
36:15I was kind of getting the sensation of being in the body of somebody watching him.
36:24Please, don't hurt me. Please, don't hurt me. Please, please don't kill me.
36:33I could feel in my hand a gun.
36:35Please don't kill me.
36:57Please, don't hurt me.
37:00Please, please don't kill me.
37:07The smell was just horrible.
37:10The next thing I know, I was running.
37:21I've never really seen that much physical human gore in a vision before.
37:27It's kind of like your first time in a morgue.
37:29Oh, my God! Lois! Lois, are you okay?
37:33I'll be fine. I just need to catch my breath.
37:36Of all the investigations we've done, she's seen a lot of things.
37:40She's heard a lot of things.
37:42She's felt things, but she's never been...
37:45I'd never seen her that badly shaken before.
37:48What happened in there?
37:50I don't know.
37:51I've never experienced anything like this. Never.
37:54What did you see?
37:56I saw a young boy.
37:58That's exactly what I saw.
38:02She had the very same impression of that youth that I did.
38:07It was kind of a validation that we were not crazy and that we weren't just, you know, overreacting.
38:14You two got out just in the nick of time.
38:16We don't know what's going to happen next. You can't go back in there.
38:19Stidman believes it unwise for the couple to return to their home.
38:23If Bill and Icy had decided to stay in the apartment, it would have just continued to escalate.
38:28How bad it would have gotten, I don't know.
38:32Lois has a psychic impression of what may have occurred in the apartment.
38:38My conclusion on what I saw was that it might have been drug-related.
38:42It seemed like there might have been some gang activity involved.
38:46It felt like a retribution crime.
38:53Do you mind if I take it?
39:23Get out of here, Lois.
39:53Get out of here.
40:13Please, please. Don't kill me.
40:24Although there are no clear-cut answers to what occurred in the apartment,
40:29the Spencers are satisfied with the outcome of the investigation.
40:34I don't know if I could go on in life asking myself time and again
40:38what was haunting that apartment and why.
40:41A lot of pieces fit in together, and that was basically enough for us.
40:48Soon after moving out, the Spencers find a new home.
40:53I would have to say that was one of the happiest days of my life.
40:58The apartment we got was still in Seattle, but not as good as where Ballard is.
41:04But somehow, I felt like it was a refuge for me.
41:09At least I could have peace of mind there.
41:12Say cheese.
41:13Cheese.
41:17In May 2007, Bill Spencer graduates from college.
41:22Thanks.
41:23No problem. See you at the graduation party?
41:25You bet.
41:27See you.
41:28Bye, guys.
41:29Despite the trauma they've endured,
41:31the Spencers have come to terms with their experience with the supernatural.
41:36But it has also forever changed how they view the world.
41:41I used to not believe in anything supernatural.
41:43I always thought that if I can't see it, if I can't touch it, it doesn't exist.
41:49There are some things in this world that cannot be seen.
41:56Don't kill me!
