00:00:50truly one of the greatest military academies in the entire world.
00:00:53Established back in 1842, this great military academy, of course,
00:00:57rich in tradition, not only in athletics, but also in academics.
00:01:01And Missy Hyatt, good to have you with us on such a big night,
00:01:04the first round of the NWA World Tag Team Tournament.
00:01:06That's right, this tournament is gonna be really exciting,
00:01:09but I have great news from New Japan Pro Wrestling.
00:01:14New Japan awarded the tournament to crown a new NWA heavyweight champion.
00:01:20Now, the committee's here tonight, and I'm gonna go,
00:01:22and I'm gonna find out some more information about this big event,
00:01:26and then I will come back later and update everyone.
00:01:28Okay, Miss, thank you very much.
00:01:30Megham T.A. 16 teams, 32 of the greatest athletes in the world tonight.
00:01:33The greatest teams in the world are certainly here,
00:01:35and all vying for one big title, the NWA World Tag Team titles.
00:01:39We have the heavy hitters, the high flyers, the scientific wrestlers,
00:01:43the strongest men ever to step in a square circle,
00:01:46and there's gonna be some big upsets. I can feel it in the air.
00:01:49Okay, it's hosted at this tournament by World Championship Wrestling.
00:01:51I'd like to bring in right now the executive vice president
00:01:54in charge of wrestling operations at WCW, Cowboy Bill Watts.
00:01:57Bill, good to see you. It's a big night for all of us.
00:01:59It's a tremendous night, and I think you started it all off
00:02:01talking about the citadel and the tradition.
00:02:04Well, the NWA has unbelievable tradition in the wrestling world,
00:02:08and we're so proud as the WCW presents this NWA tournament,
00:02:12this tag team tournament.
00:02:13It'll be followed by the Great American Bash at Pay-Per-View on July 12th,
00:02:17but this is the most important opening rounds.
00:02:19It's under NWA rules. We're just happy to be here,
00:02:22and we hope that our champions, the Steiners,
00:02:24who were entered into this tournament before they won the WCW World's titles,
00:02:28we hope certainly that they do tremendously well representing the WCW.
00:02:32Okay, the Steiners are number one seed.
00:02:33Of course, Eric Bischoff is with us with some big interviews, we're sure,
00:02:36but down at ringside, the men who will call the action tonight,
00:02:39Jim Ross and Jesse The Body Ventura.
00:02:42Well, thank you very much, Tony, Shivani, and Dean.
00:02:44We've got a lively crowd here at the McAllister Fieldhouse here in Charleston.
00:02:47Jess, no doubt we're going to see some great tag team wrestling,
00:02:50but you've also got a very important interview,
00:02:52one with the WCW World's Heavyweight Champion, Sting.
00:02:55That's right, Jim Ross.
00:02:56I'm waiting because I got a hard question to ask WCW Champion Sting,
00:03:02and it concerns Big Van Vader, but I'm pumped up.
00:03:06This is my first clash with WCW, and I know I'm going to remember it forever.
00:03:11Fans, it's going to be a great tournament.
00:03:12Remember, all these matches contested under NWA rules,
00:03:16and it will be a single elimination situation.
00:03:18If you lose, you go to the house.
00:03:20But right now, let's get it started and go up to our ring announcer,
00:03:23Gary Michael Cappetta.
00:03:25Ladies and gentlemen, this is the first tag team event in this special tournament,
00:03:31the first round.
00:03:33It is set for one fall with a 20-minute time limit.
00:03:39Introducing team number one,
00:03:41representing Europe at a total combined weight of 420 pounds,
00:03:47the brother team of Joe and Dean Malenko.
00:03:58The Malenko brothers representing Europe,
00:03:59the number seven seed in this tournament.
00:04:01Very quick team.
00:04:03Tremendous athletes.
00:04:05We expect to see a lot of mat wrestling from them,
00:04:07but we want to remind our fans that we'll be in Kansas City this Thursday night
00:04:10and Topeka, Kansas, this Friday.
00:04:12But right now, we're going back to Gary Cappetta.
00:04:14And ladies and gentlemen, their opponents,
00:04:17first from Charlotte, North Carolina,
00:04:19weighing 241 pounds,
00:04:23Ricky, the Dragon,
00:04:26Steve Bowles.
00:04:29His tag team partner,
00:04:31120 kilos,
00:04:33originally from Lithuania,
00:04:35now residing in the United States of America,
00:04:39Nikita Koloff.
00:04:44Tremendous ovation for Nikita Koloff and Ricky, the Dragon, Steamboat,
00:04:48who come into the tournament unseated.
00:04:51But Jess, upon looking at the situation,
00:04:53we know that Steamboat is a five-time former NWA World Tag Champion.
00:04:58He's held the NWA title on two occasions,
00:05:01seven championships between them,
00:05:03and even though the Malenkos have been wrestling as a team for 13 years,
00:05:07they may not have the decided teamwork advantage that we thought going in.
00:05:11Well, I think the reason that Steamboat and Koloff are not ranked
00:05:15is simply they have not tagged up enough,
00:05:17so they cannot possibly seed them for this Clash tournament,
00:05:21NWA tournament.
00:05:23And we got Steamboat starting her off with Koloff on the apron.
00:05:27It's Joe Malenko starting out against Ricky, the Dragon, Steamboat.
00:05:31Quick go behind by Malenko,
00:05:34and Steamboat counters with a waist lock.
00:05:36The Malenkos, very proficient in mat wrestling.
00:05:39They're extremely quick.
00:05:41They like to use the German suplex, Jess,
00:05:43but right now it's Steamboat with a double-leg takedown,
00:05:45trying to go for a Boston Crab.
00:05:47Well, the Malenkos, as you said, Jim Ross,
00:05:49are going to try to keep the match down on the mat.
00:05:52They want to take away Ricky, the Dragon, Steamboat's aerial attack,
00:05:56but the key to the Steamboat-Koloff team is
00:05:58they pretty much know Steamboat's style.
00:06:01Koloff, you can never be sure of him,
00:06:03and he does possess the Russian Sickle,
00:06:05which nobody wants to get hit with.
00:06:07Or do I call that the Lithuanian Sickle now?
00:06:10That might be more appropriate.
00:06:12The Malenkos, the sons of former legendary competitor
00:06:17Professor Boris Malenko.
00:06:19Test of strength here now.
00:06:26And look at the power of the Dragon.
00:06:28He's coming back.
00:06:30Draco Roman knuckled like ooh, and he got caught with a knee.
00:06:35Malenko takes him over in a pitting predicament there.
00:06:38Referee Mike Gatkins has signed this first contest,
00:06:40and Steamboat with the head scissors,
00:06:42but Malenko got caught in that arm drag takeover.
00:06:47You know what the key is to the Dragon?
00:06:49He gets in so deep with that arm drag.
00:06:51He probably, in my opinion,
00:06:53has the best arm drag in the world of wrestling today.
00:06:56It's a simple maneuver, but it can be extremely effective,
00:06:59and nobody does it any finer than the Dragon Ricky Steamboat.
00:07:03Steamboat having his share of problems
00:07:05in recent days with Cactus Jack.
00:07:07We'll have more on that this Saturday
00:07:09on WCW Saturday Night.
00:07:16Nice hip lock takeover.
00:07:18Steamboat has tremendous quickness.
00:07:20And you saw Malenko wasn't going to get fooled twice there.
00:07:23Steamboat again setting up for that arm drag,
00:07:26but Malenko backed off, wouldn't let him get in,
00:07:28and there's Steamboat going for a quick arm bar.
00:07:31They like to use the German suplex,
00:07:33which is a belly-to-back suplex,
00:07:35utilizing a bridge, and there's the tag.
00:07:37Dean Malenko and the Red Boots will be coming in.
00:07:41Steamboat reversed it.
00:07:42Good hip lock takeover.
00:07:44Back into the arm drag.
00:07:45Lightning quick as a Dragon.
00:07:47Here in the first round, nice dip up.
00:07:50Well, the German suplex that the Malenkos use
00:07:53is the famous one that Chris Taylor, Dietrich of Germany,
00:07:57caught Chris Taylor in in the Olympics.
00:07:59Nobody thought Chris Taylor could be suplexed,
00:08:02but Dietrich did it.
00:08:03Steamboat again successful in taking Dean Malenko off his feet.
00:08:07Here comes the powerhouse of this tank, Nikita Kolov.
00:08:11120 kilos from Lithuania,
00:08:13now living here in the United States.
00:08:15Irish whip to the far side.
00:08:17And Kolov scoops him up into the bear hug.
00:08:20And when you said the power man of the team,
00:08:22that's exactly it, Jim Ross.
00:08:24Nikita Kolov putting the big squeeze on Malenko
00:08:27right in the center of the ring,
00:08:29and he's got that hug locked in.
00:08:31What's happening there now, he's gonna wear him down.
00:08:33He's gonna, you cannot take a full breath of air
00:08:36when somebody's squeezing your guts.
00:08:41Malenko trying to, oh, good move there.
00:08:43Coming right off the top.
00:08:44Remember, top rope in the NWA is still legal.
00:08:47Kolov refusing to be pulled out of the corner.
00:08:50Nikita Kolov will be on our broadcast this Saturday night,
00:08:53WCW Saturday night,
00:08:54to respond to the offer by the Dangerous Alliance.
00:08:57Great quickness there by Dean Malenko,
00:08:59avoiding Kolov.
00:09:00Comes off the top, but he's caught.
00:09:02And a dropkick.
00:09:03That's teamwork for the Malenkos.
00:09:05And an earful, the first of the contest.
00:09:07And what power by Kolov.
00:09:09Now, I would question the referee,
00:09:12Now, I would question the referee's decision
00:09:14to count right there.
00:09:15That was an illegal double team move,
00:09:17and possibly the referee should not have counted on that.
00:09:23A 10 count still in effect.
00:09:25As we said, these are NWA rules,
00:09:27and I mentioned Kolov being offered employment
00:09:30in the Dangerous Alliance,
00:09:31and we'll get his reaction to that
00:09:33this Saturday on WCW Saturday night,
00:09:366.05 Eastern time, two hours for you fans.
00:09:39Great dropkick by Dean Malenko.
00:09:42The Malenkos, originally from Budapest, Hungary.
00:09:47Their heritage.
00:09:49And a beautiful snap suplex,
00:09:51but look at how quick Kolov is up.
00:09:58Kolov has a very high threshold of pain,
00:10:00no doubt about that.
00:10:03Kolov with a heavy-handed blows here.
00:10:06He's a high-impact wrestler, no doubt about that.
00:10:09Malenko missed the clothesline.
00:10:11Kolov, waist lock, tried to roll him up,
00:10:13but Malenko holds on.
00:10:15Again, that's Dean Malenko.
00:10:23Tremendous strength on display here.
00:10:26And now, another change of pace.
00:10:28Here comes the ultra-quick,
00:10:29Ricky the Dragon Steamboat,
00:10:30keeping the Malenkos off balance.
00:10:32Takes him down.
00:10:33Wow.
00:10:34And did you see him hold on to that arm bar?
00:10:36That'll snap the shoulder, snap the elbow.
00:10:38A man can get hurt and a career with a move like that.
00:10:42Tremendous elbow.
00:10:43Caught Steamboat flush in the face.
00:10:45Dropped toehold.
00:10:46And Steamboat again using his great quickness.
00:10:51Arm bar, wide base established by the Dragon
00:10:54here in this opening contest of the NWO.
00:10:57Here in this opening contest of the NWA World Tag Team Tournament.
00:11:00Thanks for being with us, fans, here on TBS.
00:11:10Dean Malenko right above us here,
00:11:12bearing those knees into the midsection of the Dragon.
00:11:14Tremendous European form.
00:11:17Many of our long-time NWA fans remember Dory Funk Jr.
00:11:20using that move to perfection in his NWA championship reigns.
00:11:25Side headlock applied by Steamboat.
00:11:27Very pugnacious in his attack here.
00:11:31Good shoulder lock by the Dragon.
00:11:34As we said, Steamboat a five-time former NWA Tag Champion.
00:11:39And fireworks beginning to ignite here
00:11:42with Dean Malenko and Nikita Koloff.
00:11:45And Steamboat dropped over the top.
00:11:47Wow.
00:11:49Malenko made a smart move right there.
00:11:51Steamboat going up for a flying head scissors maneuver.
00:11:53And he got caught on that one.
00:11:54Now some double team action.
00:11:59Double team offense.
00:12:00And the Malenko's big high impact move.
00:12:02This could be an upset.
00:12:03Could be over right here.
00:12:07Lateral press, a near fall.
00:12:09The number seven seed in the tournament.
00:12:11The Malenko Brothers representing Europe.
00:12:14You know, you speak about representation.
00:12:16You look around ringside.
00:12:18The international flavor here.
00:12:20You got photographers from Europe, from Japan.
00:12:22The Far East, America.
00:12:24All over the world as well as South America here.
00:12:31Dean Malenko taking Steamboat down now into a submission maneuver.
00:12:36Look at the position, Jess, of his knee.
00:12:37Right into the lower back.
00:12:40Absolutely.
00:12:41This is an arm bar, leg bar, double maneuver right here.
00:12:44Driving the knee into the lower back.
00:12:46And you know, Steamboat is a tough, tough wrestler.
00:12:49But this is definitely a tough submission hold.
00:12:52Steamboat may have to give it up.
00:12:54The Malenko's said that they were going to Matt Russell
00:12:56as much as they could in the contest.
00:12:58They felt like that was their strength going into the contest.
00:13:03That's exactly what we're seeing here now.
00:13:05So their game plan offensively beginning to unfold here.
00:13:08And quite frankly, Jess, this is the first time
00:13:10they've had the opportunity to sustain any offense.
00:13:14And Steamboat is tied up right now.
00:13:16You know how I'd get out of this, Ross.
00:13:18I'd thumb him in the eye.
00:13:20Break any hold.
00:13:21Headbutt by Dean Malenko.
00:13:23And he makes the exchange with his brother Joe.
00:13:29Another European forearm.
00:13:31Steamboat in trouble.
00:13:35Short clothesline and down goes the Dragon.
00:13:37Lateral press.
00:13:38He's got the leg hooked.
00:13:39And Steamboat able to kick out.
00:13:41Another near fall situation.
00:13:43The Malenko's now going for another cover.
00:13:46They hook the leg of Steamboat again.
00:13:48Able to kick out before three.
00:13:50Well, the Dragon showing a lot of resilience.
00:13:52You know, my estimation of the Dra-
00:13:55Oh, and he caught him there.
00:13:57My viewpoint of the Dragon has raised tremendously
00:14:00in the last couple of weeks.
00:14:01You know why, Jim Ross?
00:14:02What is that?
00:14:03Because in his profile, he named me his favorite movie star.
00:14:07I saw that.
00:14:09Very interesting.
00:14:10I'm his hero.
00:14:11Steamboat dazed in the wrong corner.
00:14:13Dazed in the wrong corner.
00:14:15Needs to make the tag, obviously.
00:14:17You notice the tag team ropes in effect here.
00:14:19He makes a tag to Nikita Koloff.
00:14:23Dean Malenko and Nikita Koloff, the legal man.
00:14:25And this is Nikita style right now, fighting.
00:14:28That's what he does the best.
00:14:30He's like a caged animal.
00:14:32Big elbow.
00:14:33Coming with nothing but power here.
00:14:37Irish rips into the ropes.
00:14:39The big shoulder block.
00:14:42And Dean Malenko down.
00:14:43His brother, Joe, in.
00:14:46They've burned an atomic drop.
00:14:48And a clothesline.
00:14:50And he's got him right there.
00:14:52He caught him with that sickle.
00:14:53He got it all.
00:14:54The leg is home.
00:14:55That's it.
00:14:56The winners, the team of Ricky, the Dragon Steamboat,
00:15:01and Nikita Koloff.
00:15:05The unseated combination of Ricky, the Dragon Steamboat,
00:15:09and Nikita Koloff have advanced to the second round
00:15:12in the NWA World Tag Team Title Tournament.
00:15:15Of course, that will be held on Sunday, July 12th
00:15:18at the Great American Bash pay-per-view.
00:15:20Here you see the replay.
00:15:21There's the Russian sickle that Nikita Koloff lands.
00:15:25And we would have to rate this somewhat of an upset,
00:15:28because the team of Koloff and Steamboat, unseated,
00:15:32beat the seven-seated, advanced forward here
00:15:34in the NWA Tournament.
00:15:35Fans, when we come back, it's Z-Man and Marcus Alexander
00:15:38taking on Rude and Austin, the Dangerous Alliance,
00:15:41next on PBS.
00:15:43♪♪
00:15:57Ladies and gentlemen, the following tournament match,
00:16:00it is set for one fall with a 20-minute time limit.

00:16:12weighing 235 pounds, the Z-Man!

00:16:35This Saturday night in Milwaukee at Mecca.
00:16:37This Sunday in Chicago at the UIC Pavilion.
00:16:41♪♪
00:16:47And ladies and gentlemen, their opponents,
00:16:49representing the Dangerous Alliance
00:16:53and accompanied by Medusa.
00:16:56First, from Robbinsdale, Minnesota,
00:16:59weighing 252 pounds, the United States.
00:17:04Heavyweight champion, Ravishing McGoose!
00:17:12His tag team partner, Hollywood, California,
00:17:15weighing 258 pounds, the world television champion,
00:17:20Stunning Steve Austin!
00:17:25♪♪
00:17:35♪♪
00:17:42I gotta think that Austin and Roode
00:17:45have not been seated correctly.
00:17:47They got him at number six.
00:17:49You're talking about the world TV champion
00:17:51and the United States heavyweight champion,
00:17:53only seated number six?
00:17:54Some of the scenes were a little bit unusual
00:17:57from the NWA officials.
00:17:59It's going to be the United States heavyweight champion,
00:18:01Ravishing Rick Roode,
00:18:03starting out against Marcus Alexander Bagwell.
00:18:07Roode starting out very aggressively here
00:18:09with a succession of knee lifts,
00:18:10follows him to the clothesline.
00:18:12Obviously trying to get it over early,
00:18:13and a quick tag made
00:18:14to the reigning television champion,
00:18:16Stunning Steve Austin.
00:18:19And I'll tell you what,
00:18:20Roode and Austin are going to work
00:18:22with the young Bagwell.
00:18:23I guess you can't really call him a rookie anymore.
00:18:25He's pretty well-tested.
00:18:27He's maybe a second-year man.
00:18:28Maybe he's going to suffer those second-year blues.
00:18:31Big right hand by the television champion
00:18:33to find their mark.
00:18:34Working on the lower body.
00:18:36You hear those blows into the ribcage.
00:18:38Bagwell up in the second row.
00:18:40Comes off the double axel
00:18:41and nailing Austin.
00:18:43Bagwell and C-Man have looked tremendous
00:18:45in tag team action in the last few weeks.
00:18:47As a matter of fact, this Sunday,
00:18:49on the main event,
00:18:50they get their opportunity to wrestle
00:18:51for the U.S. tag title
00:18:52against the Freebirds.
00:18:54Great quickness as the Z-Man,
00:18:55former U.S. tag team champion,
00:18:58in there has great quickness and agility.
00:19:04Side headlock by Austin.
00:19:05Z-Man trying to turn away
00:19:06in the overhand wrist lock.
00:19:08But Z-Man quickly just moved away
00:19:10from the corner.
00:19:11Well, Z-Man saw that there was going to be
00:19:12a tag being made,
00:19:13and he didn't want to get caught
00:19:14in the wrong corner.
00:19:15You know, there's so much technique
00:19:17in wrestling of cutting the ring off,
00:19:19getting your opponents to wrestle
00:19:21in your half of the ring
00:19:22and making those frequent tags.
00:19:24That's what's important
00:19:25about tag team wrestling,
00:19:27taking advantage of situations.
00:19:31Austin wants to test his strength
00:19:34with the Z-Man.
00:19:35Well, Z-Man's given up a few pounds.
00:19:37He's in great shape,
00:19:38a former Mr. Minnesota,
00:19:39but I'm not sure if he wants to do
00:19:41a Greco-Roman knuckle lock
00:19:42with Stunning Steve.
00:19:43Austin muscles Z-Man back into the corner
00:19:45and makes a tag to Ravishing Rick Rude.
00:19:47Rude, a native of Robbinsdale, Minnesota.
00:19:51An all-Minnesota contest right now.
00:19:54Minneapolis and Robbinsdale being represented.
00:19:57Irish whip, far side, center ropes.
00:19:59Got a great drop kick.
00:20:00Full extension of the legs
00:20:01by the arrogant...
00:20:03Oh, yeah.
00:20:04...United States champion,
00:20:05doing a little bumping
00:20:06and grinding there.
00:20:07Imagine three or four women
00:20:09just fainting.
00:20:10Front face lock.
00:20:12Setting up for the suplex.
00:20:15Oh, he hit it.
00:20:16Tremendous vertical suplex.
00:20:18Executed perfectly.
00:20:19Lateral press.
00:20:20The leg is hooked,
00:20:21and he got two.
00:20:24Hammering away now at the back,
00:20:25shoving Z-Man into the corner.
00:20:27And so far,
00:20:28the Rude-Austin team
00:20:30is definitely showing their experience,
00:20:32and they're showing better
00:20:33tag team wrestling ability.
00:20:35They've cut the ring off.
00:20:36Inside cradle and a near fall.
00:20:39Z-Man showing...
00:20:42Great ring savvy.
00:20:43Good counter move there
00:20:44that inside cradle.
00:20:48I understand Ravishing Rick Rude
00:20:49very upset
00:20:51with Nikita Koloff's comments
00:20:54about the Dangerous Alliance
00:20:55regarding their offer
00:20:57of employment.
00:21:00Rude took it very personally,
00:21:01I should say.
00:21:02Rude shouldn't take it personally,
00:21:04but I can't believe Koloff,
00:21:06given an opportunity like that,
00:21:08why he wouldn't take advantage of it.
00:21:10Bagwell Irish whips him in,
00:21:12and Austin caught the youngster
00:21:14from Marietta, Georgia,
00:21:15Sprayberry High School
00:21:17with a kick right to the face
00:21:18and double ax handle
00:21:19right to the spine.
00:21:21What high school?
00:21:22Sprayberry High School.
00:21:24Sprayberry?
00:21:25Home of the Yellow Jackets.
00:21:26Sprayberry.
00:21:28I'd be embarrassed
00:21:29to go to a school named that.
00:21:31Double judo thrust
00:21:33by the U.S. champion.
00:21:36I talked to Rude
00:21:37before we went on the air,
00:21:38and his choice of words
00:21:41regarding Nikita Koloff
00:21:42are not...
00:21:44I'm not able to mention it
00:21:45on television.
00:21:46Even cable?
00:21:47Even cable.
00:21:48They were that bad.
00:21:49Bagwell trying to come back
00:21:50with some right hands,
00:21:51but Rude, that washboard,
00:21:53knock abdomen,
00:21:54certainly no effect there.
00:21:56Nice suplex.
00:22:01Rude and Austin, I'm sure,
00:22:02want to keep Bagwell in
00:22:04as long as they can.
00:22:05Rude perhaps sitting a little early.
00:22:06Bagwell does make the tag
00:22:07to the Z-Man.
00:22:12And Z-Man made a mistake there.
00:22:15He dropped his head.
00:22:16He took his eyes off
00:22:17Ravishing Rick,
00:22:18and Rick drove him headfirst
00:22:20into the canvas.
00:22:21Rude trying to set him up
00:22:22for the pile driver,
00:22:23and he got him.
00:22:25I believe this one can be over
00:22:27if they want it to be.
00:22:28Compressing the vertebra there.
00:22:30Very arrogant cover,
00:22:31and the Z-Man got a shoulder up.
00:22:34What?
00:22:35Rude was very lax
00:22:36in his technique, Jess.
00:22:38Well, when you hit a pile driver
00:22:40like that, chances are
00:22:41you can be a little lax.
00:22:42I don't know how he got out of that.
00:22:47Austin nailing Bagwell
00:22:48with a cheap shot there
00:22:49on the apron,
00:22:50bringing Z-Man back
00:22:51to the center of the ring,
00:22:52far from his corner,
00:22:53and drops him
00:22:54over the top rope.
00:22:55Modified stun gun-like maneuver
00:22:58by the television champion,
00:22:59Lateral Press,
00:23:00and Austin got two,
00:23:02a long two that time.
00:23:05Goes right back
00:23:06to the front face lock.
00:23:07And you notice how smart
00:23:09the veteran Stunning Steve
00:23:11is right there.
00:23:12He realized he doesn't have
00:23:13Z-Man wore down enough
00:23:14to get the pinfall.
00:23:15Goes in with a tough front face lock.
00:23:17Look at him putting his weight.
00:23:19Now, Z-Man not only
00:23:20has to pick himself up,
00:23:21he's got to pick up the weight
00:23:23of Stunning Steve Austin
00:23:24and work against it,
00:23:25trying to get to his corner
00:23:26to tag Marcus Bagwell.
00:23:28I'm sure the fans
00:23:29are very anxious
00:23:30about the big rematch
00:23:31with Barry Windham
00:23:32and Stunning Steve Austin
00:23:33that has been signed
00:23:34for the television title.
00:23:35And now referee Randy Anderson
00:23:38conferring, oh my,
00:23:40with Bagwell
00:23:41while the Dangerous Alliance
00:23:42really doing a double team number
00:23:45on the Z-Man here.
00:23:46And there was no tag made.
00:23:48And the referee did not see the tag.
00:23:52I'm wondering if he's going
00:23:54to allow the tag to stand.
00:23:56Well, if he didn't see it,
00:23:58he can't call it.
00:23:59He's got to make a decision.
00:24:00I think he's sending
00:24:01Roode out of the ring.
00:24:02Well, apparently not.
00:24:07Roode working on the lower back
00:24:09of the Z-Man.
00:24:10That has been their focus
00:24:11in the last few moments
00:24:13offensively here.
00:24:14Another exchange
00:24:15with Roode and Austin.
00:24:16And Austin quickly
00:24:18makes sure that Z-Man
00:24:20does not make it to the corner
00:24:21for the tag.
00:24:22Takes him up.
00:24:23Z-Man's quickness up and over.
00:24:25He caught him
00:24:26with that super kick.
00:24:27And now can he make the tag?
00:24:29Austin, he does.
00:24:33Bagwell coming in
00:24:34like a house of fire,
00:24:35firing Stunning Steve in.
00:24:36Big back body drop.
00:24:38As we said, Bagwell and Z-Man
00:24:40to meet the Freebirds this Sunday
00:24:42on the main event
00:24:43for the U.S. Tag Title.
00:24:44Cross body.
00:24:45He may have it.
00:24:46Two and a half.
00:24:47We almost had a major upset
00:24:49right there, Jim Ross.
00:24:50Stunning Steve going
00:24:51for a side back breaker.
00:24:53Hooks the leg.
00:24:55A long two.
00:24:57Bagwell in trouble.
00:24:58Another tag.
00:25:00The television champion
00:25:01tags in the U.S. champion.
00:25:02And Roode now back in.
00:25:05Roode hammering away viciously
00:25:07at Bagwell.
00:25:08Sends him in.
00:25:09But Bagwell counters.
00:25:14Oh, and Medusa's got
00:25:15the referee tied up.
00:25:18Z-Man and Austin
00:25:19hooking it up outside.
00:25:21Bagwell missed the drop kick.
00:25:25And you know,
00:25:26I can totally understand.
00:25:27Oh, and there's
00:25:28the Roode Awakening.
00:25:29The Roode Awakening.
00:25:31Z-Man and Austin outside.
00:25:34Roode got the one, two, three.
00:25:36Ladies and gentlemen,
00:25:37the winning team advancing
00:25:38in this tournament,
00:25:39the team of Ravishing Rick Roode
00:25:42and Stunning Steve Austin.
00:25:46Yes, sir, sir, sir!
00:25:48Oh-ho-ho!
00:25:51Yes, sir, sir, sir!
00:25:53Oh-ho-ho!
00:25:55Oh-ho-ho!
00:25:58Oh-ho-ho!
00:26:02Oh-ho-ho!
00:26:07Welcome back
00:26:08to the clash of champions, everybody.
00:26:10I'm Eric Bischoff
00:26:11along with Terry Bam Bam Gordy
00:26:12and Dr. Death Steve Williams.
00:26:14A lot of action so far,
00:26:15and stunning Steve Austin have advanced to the tournament as has Nikita Kolov and Ricky the Dragon
00:26:20Steamboat. But Terry Bam Bam Gordy, Dr. Death Steve Williams here at the Clash of the Champions.
00:26:24You're going to be facing the father and son team from Australia, the O'Day's.
00:26:28Australia? Who cares about Australia? Away down under. Nobody cares about Australia. Hey, come on,
00:26:34let's face it, man. The whole world, everybody's sitting out right there. They want to see Dr.
00:26:41Death Steve Williams, Terry Gordy go against the Steiners. They don't want to see Terry Gordy and
00:26:47Steve Williams go against a bunch of Australians, man. Come on, let's get it together, Steiners.
00:26:52We're ready. Let's do it. But wait a minute, the Steiner brothers are going to be facing
00:26:56the Puerto Rican team. Steiner, Steiner. All I get to hear is Steiner, Steiner. I'm starting
00:27:02to get a headache, Terry. You know what? I'm from Oklahoma. And when we're from Oklahoma and you hear
00:27:08about somebody who plays for Michigan, some kind of athletic sports, all you think about is queers.
00:27:16Well, I can't say that on TV, but I'm just tired of it. It just gets me going.
00:27:22Steiners, Steiners. We're going to see who's the number one tag.
00:27:28Dr. Death Steve Williams and Terry Bam Bam Gordy fired up here in this NWA
00:27:32World Tag Team Tournament first round competition. Now let's get back to the ring.
00:27:38Ladies and gentlemen, the following contest in this tag team tournament set for one fall
00:27:44with a 20 minute time limit. Introducing team number one, representing Australia
00:27:52from Sydney, Australia. Total combined weight 452 pounds. The father and son team of Larry and Jeff
00:28:03O'Day. Well, fans, as the O'Day makes their way to the ring, I want to remind you that
00:28:07the 1992 Great American Bash Tour will begin on July 1st. It will end on August 16th. Big events
00:28:14coming July 1st in Macon, Georgia, July 3rd in Chattanooga, Tennessee, July 4th in Baltimore at
00:28:19the arena and a big one in the Omni in Atlanta, Georgia Power Safety Night on Sunday, July 5th
00:28:25at 730. And for our fans in Atlanta, tickets on sale for that event now at all Ticketmaster outlets.
00:28:30And let's go back up to Gary Capetta. And ladies and gentlemen, their opponents
00:28:35currently residing in Nagoya, Japan. Total combined weight 540 pounds. The team of Dr.
00:28:44Jeff Steve Williams, his partner, Terry Bam Bam Gordy. Well, Terry Bam Bam Gordy and Dr. Jeff
00:28:55Steve Williams have one thing in their mind, obviously, Jeff, and that is to eventually face
00:28:59the Steiner brothers if they are victorious in this contest. And the Steiners are victorious
00:29:04against the Puerto Rican team that they will meet in the second round at the Great American Bash
00:29:09on July 12th. And I think Dr. Jeff said it all when he said that's what the people are waiting
00:29:14for. The Steiners against Bam Bam Gordy and Dr. Jeff Steve Williams. Now, I don't want you to be
00:29:20biased, Ross, because I know you're from Oklahoma, too. Well, I'll try to keep it right down the
00:29:25middle. It's going to be Larry O'Day, the father of this duo and real veteran over two decades in
00:29:32the sport. At 11 years, he was the Australian heavyweight champion. The side headlock on Terry
00:29:38Bam Bam Gordy. Who did he beat for that title? Crocodile Dundee? Could have, I'm not real sure.
00:29:44Good drop toe by Bam Bam Gordy. Gordy and Williams, multi-time All Japan Tag Team Champions.
00:29:52And interestingly enough, on their bios, Gordy says his toughest opponent that he's ever faced
00:29:57was Dr. Jeff Steve Williams. Williams says the toughest opponent he's ever faced, Terry Bam Bam
00:30:02Gordy. Well, then it seemed only natural that the two of them ought to team up. Tag made. Here
00:30:07comes Dr. Jeff, a four-time All-American in wrestling at the University of Oklahoma. Started
00:30:13in football four years for the Sooners. Played in four bowl games with most magnificent athletes
00:30:18in the game today. Tell me, did they ever beat Texas when he played? You better believe it.
00:30:23Don't you lie to me now, Ross. Documented. Here comes young Jeff O'Day, only a two-year pro,
00:30:29just 21 years of age. And man, his baptism under fire here with Dr. Jeff may be something
00:30:34this youngster never forgets. Suplex time. And look at Dr. Jeff, I'll tell you what,
00:30:42these guys are focused, you can tell it. There's a tag in the exchange with Gordy,
00:30:48Doc and Gordy in tremendous condition. But again, their focus is just on one thing,
00:30:53who is the better team, them or the Steiners? And they were rather upset. What a move there,
00:30:57what a clothesline. Almost took his head off, that they were the number four seed in this event.
00:31:01Irish whip far side. Gordy, good counter move by Jeff O'Day, and he got two out of them. Near
00:31:08fall by the young man from Sydney, Australia. Well, I just think Jeff O'Day lacks too much
00:31:14experience against Bam Bam Gordy. They also give up a lot of weight and a lot of strength.
00:31:18They better try to double team Gordy and Williams, keep him in the- What a suplex.
00:31:24Right on the back of the neck. I think he knocked him out. He folded up like an accordion with that
00:31:29suplex. And now it's not going to get any better as Dr. Death is tagged in. Irish whip far side.
00:31:36Gold Devil shoulder block. Williams and Gordy are a brutal physical team. And Doc now has him up.
00:31:46Larry O'Day, the veteran is helpless. Look at this. And there it is, the Oklahoma Stampede.
00:31:53Yes. Ladies and gentlemen, here are your winners, the team of Terry Bam Bam Gordy and Dr. Death,
00:32:01Steve Williams. Well, half of our dream tag team matchup has been set. Now, can the Steiners
00:32:08defeat the Puerto Rican team to meet Dr. Death and Terry Bam Bam Gordy at the Great American Bank?
00:32:14There you see Bam Bam Gordy. Look at, there's the suplex right there, putting O'Day right on
00:32:21the back of his neck, knocking him out. And look at the power of Dr. Death, Steve Williams. Wham,
00:32:25into the turnbuckle. Holds that power, dives through the air. Big power body slam. Look at
00:32:31that. The bodies come up six, seven inches off the mat. One, two, three. Big victory for the
00:32:36team from Japan. As we come back, Jesse, the Body Ventura Toss to the WCW World Heavyweight
00:32:41Champion, The Stinger. That's next.
00:32:56It is always my pleasure to conduct interviews here in WCW and nothing excites me and pumps me
00:33:03up more to know that I am going to interview the one and the only, the WCW World Heavyweight
00:33:11Champion. This is Sting. Well, ladies and gentlemen, while the WCW Heavyweight Champion
00:33:18of the World, The Stinger, makes his way to the ring, how can any of us look at this
00:33:24splendid look possessed by the champion? We have to take a look at the infamous night
00:33:32when he met Big Fan Vader. Vader, a 450-pound monster, almost ending Sting's career.
00:33:42But they will meet again. Vader about to deliver the Vader Bomb, 450 pounds.
00:33:49Look at this impact as we prepare to go back up to Jesse, The Body Ventura.
00:33:57Champion, let me say this. I can tell you're fired up. I can tell you're pumped up. I can
00:34:06tell the people love you, but I got to be the bearer of bad tidings because we all know
00:34:13you got hurt a while back. We all know who hurt you a while back. And I'm going to tell
00:34:19you right now, the man is back. The man that feels no pain. The one, the only, Big Fan
00:34:27Vader, and he's looking for you. Well, you know something, Jesse? The Big Fan Vader story is a bad
00:34:39story for The Stinger when you look past and you see what he's done to me. But you know something?
00:34:45I feel like telling a story tonight myself, and I feel like telling a David and Goliath kind of
00:34:51a story. And I know what you're all out there thinking, including you, Jesse, and including
00:34:55you, Van Vader. You're thinking that poor little Stinger is little David, aren't you? I got news
00:35:01for you. All I do is look over there, and then I look over there, and then I look over there,
00:35:07and then I look over there, and before you know it, I don't feel like little David. As a matter
00:35:13of fact, I feel like Goliath. I feel like King Kong. I feel like Godzilla. Am I getting the point
00:35:21across? I hope so, Van Vader, because The Stinger is ready for you.
00:35:33Well, there you got it. The Stinger getting ready for his showdown with his number one contender,
00:35:39Big Van Vader, the man who feels no pain.
00:36:05Welcome back, ladies and gentlemen, to the Clash of the Champions here on TBS.
00:36:08Jim Ross and Jesse The Bodyguard are back with you here at ringside. Sting and Big Van Vader
00:36:13on pay-per-view Sunday, July 12th. Sting has Vader in his backyard, but he's still got 200 pounds
00:36:20weight difference to make up. I got a feeling that Sting's reign as champion is gonna come to an end
00:36:25in the early part of July, Jim Ross. Fans, if you can't be with us in Albany, Georgia on Sunday,
00:36:30July the 12th, hope you'll be with us via pay-per-view. Call your local cable company.
00:36:34Starts at 7 o'clock Eastern time. Sting and Big Van Vader showdown, the rematch on pay-per-view
00:36:40Sunday, July 12th. But we've got more of this great tournament to go here from the McAllister
00:36:45Fieldhouse, and let's go back up to Gary Michael Capetta. Ladies and gentlemen, the following
00:36:51tournament match, it is set for one fall with a 20-minute time limit. Introducing first,
00:36:58from Austin, Texas, weighing 261 pounds, The Natural, Dustin Woods. His tag team partner,
00:37:10from Sweetwater, Texas, 274 pounds, Barry Wendell.
00:37:29And ladies and gentlemen, their opponents, accompanied by the chief executive officer
00:37:45of the Dangerous Alliance, Paul E. Dangerously, first, from Huntsville, Alabama, weighing 235
00:37:54pounds, Beautiful Bobby. And from Minnesota, 254 pounds, The Enforcer, Arn Anderson.
00:38:10Arn Anderson, who I'm sure listened very closely to Sting's interview, because Anderson has made
00:38:16it very clear, Jess, that he also has his sights set on being the next WCW World Heavyweight
00:38:21champ. Well, I guess that's the enjoyment of being the champ. Everybody gets in line,
00:38:26and when you're done with one competitor, the next contender is waiting for you.
00:38:32Paul E. Dangerously huddling with his team. Those two men have held more tag titles than
00:38:38any team in this tournament. Former WCW World Tag Team Champions, but they have also
00:38:44been the World Tag Team Champions with multiple partners in their career. Beautiful Bobby,
00:38:48one-time member of the Midnight Express. Arn Anderson, one-time member of the Horsemen.
00:38:53You know, I'll tell you something too that bothers me. Why has Windham still got the
00:38:57hand taped up? Give me a break. That thing was hurt six months ago. And it was hurt by
00:39:04one of the men in there right now, Arn Anderson. These two men, former tag team partners,
00:39:08and a great team at one time. Windham, certainly looking forward to his rematch with Stunning
00:39:14Steve Austin for the World Television title. That rematch, as I mentioned earlier, has been
00:39:19signed. But I'm sure his sights are set right now as we take a look at that taped fist.
00:39:26Sights set on advancing in this single elimination tournament. Anderson eating the number three seed,
00:39:33but surprisingly Rhodes and Windham were unseated. I find that a bit shocking. As we stated earlier,
00:39:40Jim Ross, it's very interesting how the NWA set up their seeded procedures. Because
00:39:46how on earth can Dustin Rhodes and Barry Windham be unseated, the two big Texicans?
00:39:51Side hit lock takedown and counter to the head scissor. Boom, Barry Windham caught it.
00:39:57He nailed it for the right. And what did he hit him with? A taped fist.
00:40:03Referee Mike Atkins admonishing Windham for using that fist. Windham with four arm this time.
00:40:10Irish whip right into the corner and he was met there. A knee right to the abdomen.
00:40:16Anderson now going up top. It is legal in the NWA rules when he comes down.
00:40:22Drop kick by Windham brought Anderson all the way down. You know, it's not often that you see
00:40:29the enforcer Iron Anderson make a mistake, but he made one there. He tried to go up to the top
00:40:35too soon. He didn't have Windham hurt. Windham catches him with the drop kick all the way out
00:40:41to the floor. And if you'll notice Jim Ross, there are no more pads outside the ring here in WCW.
00:40:49Anderson would like the referee to disqualify Barry Windham for throwing Anderson over the
00:40:55top rope. That obviously was not the case. And the tag has been made. Beautiful Bobby.
00:41:01He didn't throw him, he drop kicked him over the top.
00:41:06Beautiful Bobby in and Barry Windham. And Iron Anderson outside the ring nursing that knee.
00:41:13He may be incapacitated for the remainder of this match. Young Dustin Rhodes in.
00:41:20With a wrist lock applied to beautiful Bobby. Dustin Rhodes will meet the tailor-made man
00:41:24this Saturday on WCW Saturday night. And after what Taylor has said about Dustin in the last
00:41:29couple of weeks on TBS. You know the one thing I'm thankful for in Dustin Rhodes?
00:41:34He's so much better looking than that old man of his. Beautiful Bobby running distance.
00:41:42Jesse Ventura documented handsome features into the top turnbuckle.
00:41:47Oh, beautiful Bobby with a stutter step there. Got Rhodes in the air and then buried the
00:41:53foot right to the midsection. Bobby off the rope. Oh, and Rhodes caught him with the elbow. A second
00:42:03one. A third one. Get some momentum. Now there he kicked him over the top.
00:42:12Is this referee going to make a ruling or what? Well, it's a judgment call there.
00:42:18And the referee in his judgment, much like you'd call a pass interference penalty or a no call in
00:42:24the NFL. Look at Paulie. He's irate. This is two times now. Not once, but twice. His men,
00:42:32the Dangerous Alliance have been tossed over the top.
00:42:41He making his way back in the ring after getting instructions from Paulie dangerously.
00:42:47What are they saying, Paulie? What? I can't quite make it out. I'm sure it's not very
00:42:58complimentary. Beautiful Bobby makes a tag to the enforcer. Arne Anderson, the southpaw entity
00:43:06buried that left into the midsection of Dustin Rhodes comes back with another heavy handed right
00:43:10left hand rather to the side of the head. And Arne Anderson, they got the leg and the knee was hurt
00:43:16earlier. And a brilliant maneuver there by Arne Anderson, the veteran. He got in trouble. He got
00:43:35back to the corner where beautiful Bobby was waiting to protect him. Now they're back in
00:43:40there consulting with Paulie and nobody knows more about wrestling than Paulie Dangerously
00:43:45and how to win matches. He said, go to plan number two. So we'll see how that one unfolds.
00:43:50Tag has been made. Barry Windham will be in. So far, it hasn't unfolded too well.
00:44:01Oh, Bobby got it from the outside. Bobby caught Windham from the outside.
00:44:05I stand corrected. Plan two worked real well. Quick tag now. Eaton comes in.
00:44:09Wrestlers have a count of five to leave the ring after they made the tag.
00:44:16Irish whip, center of the ropes, high elevation and that back body drop.
00:44:22Eaton going for the cover here. He has the leg hook. It's going to be over. No, it's not. He
00:44:26got two out of it. Well, big Barry Windham in trouble right in front of us right now is beautiful
00:44:33Bobby going after the eyes, choking him on the ropes. It looks like Paulie plan two means
00:44:39turn him loose. Anything goes. Anderson snapping Windham's neck off the top turnbuckle.
00:44:47Beautiful Bobby in control here. Tags in Arn Anderson.
00:44:54Remember, if the Dangerous Alliance win this match, they will meet their teammates
00:44:58Brood and Austin at the Great American Bash on July 12th.
00:45:02Windham makes the tag to the natural. The youngster from Boston, Texas.
00:45:07A big time right hand. Nellie, Eaton, and Anderson. Sends Anderson for the ride. Caught him with a lariat.
00:45:16Dangerously up on the apron. And Anderson hooks him up. Went for the DDT but ropes, held over the
00:45:23rope but he was caught with the right hand. What action. What a succession of of offense and moves
00:45:31here, Jess. I'll tell you what, Paulie's plan didn't work that time. He figured by tying the
00:45:36referee up, the Dangerous Alliance would get the ring. But the win, I should say, but it backfired
00:45:42on him. Anderson makes the tag to beautiful Bobby. Eaton in now. Oh, Eaton with a right hand. He's
00:45:51got a right hand, he said, for Larry the Crunch of Zabisco because they've got a one-on-one matchup
00:45:55signed. And we'll talk to Zabisco this Saturday. And Dustin Rhodes took a big chance there. A big
00:46:01chance that did not pay off. He tried to go for the cross body block coming off those ropes.
00:46:07Beautiful Bobby ducking out of the way. Rhodes landing on the mat and then going all the way to
00:46:11the floor. And Upaulie delivers a shot to the kidney. With that darn telephone. Dangerously
00:46:18with a cheap shot. Expect none the less from him. Rhodes nailed in the kidney area. Hey,
00:46:26you gotta hand it to him, Ross. Paulie does what it takes to win. Snapmare by beautiful Bobby.
00:46:34And beautiful Bobby now. The master of the Alabama Jam. Going up top. Remember, it's still legal in
00:46:40the NWA. The knee, he caught him with it. Oh, he caught him. He drove the knee right to the heart.
00:46:46This is over. No, he didn't. I can't believe that Rhodes got out of that. What tenacity
00:46:53and desire by young Dustin Rhodes after having that knee jammed right into his chest.
00:46:59Snapmare by Anderson, who is now the legal man. Oh, Anderson stomping away.
00:47:08Stomping the kid right in the head. And Barry Windham actually not helping his partner by
00:47:13coming in the ring. Ties up the referee and is now allowing Aaron Anderson to choke Dustin Rhodes.
00:47:25Rhodes in a tremendous amount of trouble now.
00:47:29It's almost as if the combination of Anderson and Eaton in a feeding frenzy,
00:47:35like a shark attack here. They sense that the kid has been wounded. He is hurt.
00:47:39And look at Barry Windham. Oh, he fought his way out of that reverse chin lock.
00:47:47Anderson, lucky for him, he fell back into his corner, able to tag beautiful Bobby.
00:47:55Eaton now. Setting Rhodes up with Rhodes on Bulldog. He used Rhodes on finishing maneuver,
00:48:02the Bulldog hip hop. And he got two and a half. Is that insult to injury or what?
00:48:08Can you imagine beautiful Bobby beating Dustin Rhodes with his own move? He's gonna do it again.
00:48:14This time, Dustin shoved him off right into the corner chest first. Dustin trying to extend that
00:48:21six foot five inch frame to tag in his big partner, Barry Windham. Ref didn't see it.
00:48:29They made the tag and this referee is not going to allow it. He did not see it.
00:48:35And that's correct. The referee has to stand by that. Oh, he's got it. He's got it.
00:48:43The referee outside trying to break up the fight. Beautiful Bobby back in. Dustin Rhodes
00:48:49was spine buster. And oh, he got a shot.
00:48:54That delay, the delay with the referee outside cost a dangerous alliance there.
00:49:00But beautiful Bobby up on top. We'll put him away now if he hits. And no, he doesn't hit it.
00:49:06He did not hit it. Bulldog. Rhodes caught him with the Bulldog. And he's got it.
00:49:14Ladies and gentlemen, the winners of the match, the team of the natural Dustin Rhodes and Barry
00:49:21Windham.
00:49:51Welcome back to the class of the champions. I'm Eric Fischhoff along with Missy Hyatt.
00:49:56A lot of things developing here at the class, including an injury to the Puerto Rican team
00:50:01outside of the wrestling ring. We're going to talk more about that in just a few moments. But
00:50:05Missy, I understand that you've got an update for us. That's right, Eric. I broke the story
00:50:08about New Japan Pro Wrestling's tournament to crown the new NWA heavyweight champion.
00:50:14Now it's going to start August the 6th in Shishakiawa and be covered all throughout
00:50:19Japan with the finals being August 10th, 11th, and 12th in Tokyo at the Sumo Hall.
00:50:25But you know what's really interesting? I just found out is that Aaron Anderson,
00:50:29beautiful Bobby, stunning Steve Austin, and Ravishing Rick Rude, all four members of the
00:50:34dangerous alliance are going to be competing in this event. Very interesting indeed. Thank you
00:50:39very much, Missy. Thank you. All right. Now we understand. Well, making their way now.
00:50:43Terry Bambi has been a bad wreck and I'm talking about a nasty, nasty wreck. There's people out
00:50:49there. I mean, they're all twisted up and they got their arms behind their neck. Messed up.
00:50:55What kind of a wreck are you talking about? Right outside this building right here,
00:50:59and it looked like a couple of Puerto Ricans. Now listen, you know what I'm saying? It's been a bad
00:51:05wreck, huh, Steve? I'm telling you what, some guy come running in, doctor, doctor, where's the
00:51:11doctor? Is there a doctor in the house? And we screamed out, yes, and we make house calls. No,
00:51:17we're the ones that called the 911. You had Mexican Puerto Ricans stretched all over.
00:51:22Looked like a semi hit them. You know, look at this right here. You got Williams and Gordy with
00:51:28the win. You got the Steiner brothers. I guess they get a forfeit. Hey, you know, this right
00:51:38here is what the whole world's been waiting on, man. Let's get it on. Let's cut the butter and
00:51:43let's get it on right here. There ain't no Puerto Rican team to wrestle. Let's get it on, cut through
00:51:48it all and let's do it. All right. The Puerto Rican team not able to meet the Steiner brothers
00:51:54because of the injuries. We'll talk more about it as the class of the champions returns here on TBS
00:51:59right after this.
00:52:16Welcome back to the first round of the NWA World Tag Team Tournament
00:52:20on World Championship Wrestling's Clash of the Champions.
00:52:26Ladies and gentlemen, the following tournament tag team contest. It is set for one fall with a 20
00:52:33minute time limit. Introducing team number one at a total combined weight of 430 pounds
00:52:44representing Mexico. Number one and number two, the Silver Kings.
00:52:54Outstanding team, the UWA Tag Team Champions from Mexico. Fans, don't forget to join us this weekend.
00:53:01WCW Saturday night, 6.05. Michael P.S. Hayes will be my guest co-host. Dustin Rhodes, tailor-made
00:53:07man, one-on-one. We'll hear some comments from the former member of the Dangerous Alliance,
00:53:11Larry, the Crunch of the Hibiscus, and some comments from perhaps a potential member of
00:53:16the Dangerous Alliance, Nikita Koloff. Hope you'll be with us this Saturday, WCW Saturday night
00:53:22at 6.05 Eastern Time. And now back up to Gary, Michael, to miss.
00:53:52The fabulous Freebirds, the United States Tag Team Champions, this Sunday on the main event,
00:53:57will defend their title against the new men, Mark and Alexander Bandwell. And I can tell you,
00:54:01Terry, from talking with them, they're very upset that they're unseated in this tournament.
00:54:06Well, they got a right to be, and you know who else I met as angry as these two Mexicans
00:54:10after that Supreme Court decision that any of us can run down to Mexico now and kidnap
00:54:15any Mexican and bring them back here and try them. Great dropkick by Silver King Watt,
00:54:21in there with the blue boots and with Michael P.S. Hayes.
00:54:29Irish whips reversed. Oh, he went for Hayes, but he got his own partner.
00:54:36Silver King 2. I gotta ask you, Ross, how do you tell the difference between Silver King 1 and 2,
00:54:43which is which? I've done my research. Tell me. Silver King 1's in the ring. He's just a little
00:54:49taller than his partner. Are you sure that ain't 2? Wristlock applied by Jimmy Jam Garvin.
00:54:59Great move there. Countered into the wristlock. That makes the tag, and Silver King 2 in.
00:55:05We understand a lot of chaos reigning in the back of the arena here, near the locker room area. Oh,
00:55:13what quickness. The Puerto Rican team will be unable to compete against the Steiners.
00:55:18Eric was a little unsure, and rightfully so, what's going on.
00:55:22Hey, that accident might have did him a favor. Who'd want to compete against the Steiners?
00:55:27Nice go behind. Silver Kings, great quickness and agility. As you can see, their style, very unique,
00:55:34very high risk. They take a lot of aerial moves. They'll take a lot of chances and put their own
00:55:41bodies at risk. Good slam there. And now number two, going up top. One half of the UWA Tag Champions
00:55:48in Mexico, and nobody there. Whoa. And I'll tell you what, that's a quick trip to the chiropractor
00:55:55when you miss one like that. Garvin on top of the lateral press, but he couldn't hold him down.
00:56:02Got two out of him. We're going to try to get Tony Schiavone and Magnum T.A. to find out
00:56:08more about this situation, as they will be checking on it now, we're told. So we'll hope
00:56:13that report a little bit later here. Suplex by Garvin, and another near fall, Rick of the Eyes
00:56:19by number two, trying to work on the hamstring. Tag made. Here comes Michael Hayes, who will be
00:56:26my broadcast partner this Saturday on WCW, Saturday night. Hayes with a forearm to the back of the head.
00:56:31And that's silver cape number two in there, right? You got it.
00:56:38Tags in number one, Lee coming in momentarily. Tag was made. Sounds like a Dr. Seuss book.
00:56:44Whoa. Number one and number two. Great offensive display here. Another tag made.
00:56:51Number one tagging number two suplex. Hayes in a lot of trouble. The elbow off the top,
00:56:57and that could be all. And I'll tell you, he's going for the cover. He almost had it. He got two
00:57:01and a half. Great combination moves there by the Mexican team, international competition here at
00:57:06WCW and the NWA Tag Team Tournament. Silver Kings. Oh, they got Hayes front and back.
00:57:15Man, these guys are perpetual offense. Take a lot of chances, but remember three words or three
00:57:22letters, and that's DDT. It's universal. Back body drop by Hayes. Oh, Hayes is going for a leg drop,
00:57:30it looked like. These guys are quick and unorthodox, to say the least.
00:57:42They call it Lucha Libre in Mexico. And what does that mean? Rough wrestling, I think.
00:57:56Rough wrestling. Okay. Beautiful move there. Greco-Roman knuckle lock into a quick
00:58:05standing drop kick. I'll tell you, this Mexican team, very quick in the ring.
00:58:09Drop toe hold. Very nice. Nicely done indeed. Trying to get on top of the lateral press.
00:58:16Hayes trying to roll off his shoulders. Double leg pick up by Michael Hayes, sags in Jimmy Jam Garvin.
00:58:27Garvin sent him to the turnbuckle, snapmare, and to the reverse chin lock. I wonder if that
00:58:35turnbuckle tastes like an enchilada to this guy. Probably not.
00:58:41Not nearly as appetizing. Garvin rakes the eyes. And both men tag out. Apparently,
00:58:48they both had enough of each other. Hayes rakes the eyes, and it's countered. Silver
00:58:58King's working on the hamstrings, trying to get Hayes or Garvin off their feet.
00:59:01Drop kick. Got him kind of low there in the ribs. And Hayes comes back with a forearm.
00:59:07Very unorthodox match because the styles are so diverse here. Tag made.
00:59:17And, oh, Hayes drop kick from the top. This could be an upset,
00:59:22and it took Jimmy Jam's interference to save the Fabulous Freebird. Spinning kick there.
00:59:28Like watching the Flying Walindas or somebody. These guys take more chances. Hayes came up and
00:59:33tripped the man. Garvin catches him from behind, and Hayes got him with that left jab, and he's
00:59:39stuck it in there. And now the Freebirds stomping away, and all four men in there now.
00:59:46Freebirds run together. Referee Randy Anderson obviously losing control. Freebirds outside. Now,
01:00:02keep your eyes on these guys. Here they come. Whoop, U-turn. Up and over, cross body,
01:00:10but Hayes and Garvin, well, they were ready for that one. Oh! Whoa! And Hayes hit his partner
01:00:16Jimmy Jam. Hayes hits his partner, and Hayes moves, and the Silver Kings run together.
01:00:25The referee counting. Two of them have got to get back in the ring, and here comes
01:00:29P.S. Michael Hayes. Hayes with the inside cradle. He's got him. Ladies and gentlemen,
01:00:35the winners of the match advancing in this tournament, the United States Tag Team Champions,
01:00:41the Fabulous Freebirds! Well, it was two very diverse styles, and the Freebirds taking advantage
01:00:52of that mistake made by the Silver Kings, as they were trying to put the birds away
01:00:57coming off the top. There you see the Silver Kings coming across. Two Freebirds there to
01:01:03catch him from a few feet away. Right there. Now you see right here, Jimmy Jam throwing a
01:01:08forearm hook at the Silver Kings. Michael Hayes with the left hand literally drops his partner
01:01:14outside the ring, and here's Silver King two coming off. Freebird moves out of the way. Michael
01:01:20Hayes hits his partner, and at this point, P.S. Michael Hayes firing the Silver Kings back in
01:01:27the ring. An inside cradle move hooks the Life Knights into a small package. One, two, three,
01:01:33and a big win for Freebird. Ladies and gentlemen, as we mentioned, the Puerto Rican team will be
01:01:38unable to compete with the Steiner Brothers, and that really puts a fly in the ointment,
01:01:44as the old cliche goes, Jess, about the Steiner's match later tonight. I don't think it's a fly in
01:01:49the ointment. I think it's what we all hope for, the dream match. Bam Bam Gordy, Dr. Des Steve
01:01:54Williams against the Steiner Brothers. That match is scheduled for the Great American Bash on
01:01:59pay-per-view. Remember, that event is on Sunday, July the 12th, and we hope to have a report from
01:02:04Magnum T.A. and Tony Schiavone. As a matter of fact, we'll hear from Magnum and from Tony when
01:02:09we come back from this time out.
01:02:12The Clash of the Champions continues here on TBS. Tony Schiavone and Magnum T.A. back with you. We have two
01:02:29semifinal matches now with the Great American Bash. The Steiner's against Dr. Des Steve Williams and
01:02:34Terry Bam Bam Gordy, and we have, of course, the team of Ravishing Rick Roode and Stunning Steve
01:02:37Austin against Barry Windham and Dustin Rose. But what about the situation we heard Eric Bischoff
01:02:42talking about in the Puerto Rican team and that emergency that they are no longer here with us
01:02:46right now? A very serious violent confrontation took place. There was no witnesses to the fact.
01:02:51I have some very strong suspicions myself as to what actually happened, but I think it's gonna
01:02:56be a long time before we get to the real bottom of the root of this problem. I think we see somebody
01:03:01over here might maybe have some answers. Okay, it's Ole Anderson. Ole, of course, is the senior referee
01:03:05for World Championship Wrestling. Ole, what is going on? Tell us what you know about this Puerto
01:03:09Rican team and what has happened. Well, all I can tell you right now is we get a little confusion.
01:03:12The Puerto Ricans aren't going to be able to continue. They're both hurt very badly. They'll
01:03:15be taken care of at the hospital. That means, of course, the Steiners will be getting a bye,
01:03:20and right now what I'm concerned about is getting with the referee staff to determine the order of
01:03:24the matches. All right. Okay, so there it is. Ole Anderson, the head of the referees of World
01:03:28Championship Wrestling, and the Steiners now to face Dr. Des Steve Williams and Terry Bam Bam Gordy
01:03:32in the Great American Bash. What a match that's going to be. Well, I know the Steiners are itching.
01:03:36They're chomping at the bit to get hold of Dr. Gordy. A lot of accusations have been made,
01:03:41and I, for one, would like to see that match take place. Okay, our next match in the NWA World Tag
01:03:46Team Tournament continues on TBS right after this timeout.
01:04:07Ladies and gentlemen, the following Tag Team Tournament event, it is set for one fall with a
01:04:1320-minute time limit. Introducing first, at a total combined weight of 415 pounds,
01:04:21first from Cincinnati, Ohio, Brian Bryan, and from Tokyo, Japan, Jushin Thunder Liger.
01:04:35Two tremendous light heavyweights, both men that have had great matches against the other,
01:04:42have phenomenal respect, and they're teaming for the first time. You're going to see it right here,
01:04:48fans, on the Clash of the Champions here on TBS. Yes, this is a tremendous team,
01:04:53but they really had their work cut out for them against a number eight seed who's about to be
01:04:57introduced. And ladies and gentlemen, their opponents, representing Canada, from Calgary,
01:05:05Canada, total combined weight 435 pounds, the team of Beef Wellington and Chris Benoit.
01:05:16Beef Wellington on your right, Chris Benoit on your left. Benoit is a former IWGP Junior Heavyweight
01:05:23Champion. Of course, the IWGP with New Japan Pro Wrestling had a tremendous feud with Jushin
01:05:29Thunder Liger and Wellington, the current Western Canadian Champion. And he was competing there in
01:05:35Calgary when Brian Bryan left the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League
01:05:40and started wrestling in Calgary. So all four of these men know each other very, very well.
01:05:47Well, I'll tell you what, this, you talk about a dream team of light heavyweights,
01:05:51Jushin Thunder Liger and Brian Pillman. What a better team that you could find in the world.
01:05:57Nowhere could you find a team like that. It's Chris Benoit starting out with Jushin Thunder
01:06:01Liger. Benoit celebrated his 25th birthday yesterday. And what a great president would
01:06:07be to advance and represent his country on July 12th at the Great American Bash pay-per-view,
01:06:13great takedown. Benoit firing Liger over with a nice fireman's carry.
01:06:19Greco-Roman knuckle lock here. Both these guys, very powerful for light heavies.
01:06:29Meanwhile, the stronger of the two. I'm not so sure.
01:06:36Great leverage displayed by Jushin Thunder Liger got underneath his opponent and took him down.
01:06:42Liger, one of the most popular public figures in Japan, a phenomenal athlete.
01:06:50Good shoulder block takedown by Chris Benoit. Gets the momentum. Oh, what an RPA takeover.
01:06:56Another one. Irish whip. It's reversed to the center of the ropes this time. Takes him up and
01:07:03over. Benoit goes for the dropkick. Nobody there. He swats away the dropkick from Liger.
01:07:08As we said, these two men have had some tremendous battles in Japan for the IWGP
01:07:12light heavyweight title. And here comes two men. Two old adversaries from western Canada.
01:07:20Beef Wellington and flying Brian Pillman.
01:07:28Whoa. And I'll tell you what, it's been a while since
01:07:33Pillman's been hit with a tackle like that, especially without pads on.
01:07:43Fans, we're going to keep you updated on what's, there's a lot of meetings going on right now.
01:07:47The NWA officials, WCW officials, Cowboy Bill Watts. Oh, what a takedown. Up and over goes
01:07:53Wellington and a dropkick. Outside goes Wellington. No mats out there.
01:07:58As we said, a resounding thud on the concrete. And Pillman with a dropkick. And again,
01:08:03Wellington on the outside. We understand Ole Anderson is now conferring with Bill Watts about
01:08:11this Puerto Rican situation, the Steiners. And Pillman met this time. Tremendous move by
01:08:17Wellington coming from the outside, back in. Well, Pillman went to the well once too often.
01:08:23He thought he could get away with it, but he didn't. And now he's back in.
01:08:28He thought he could get away with it a third time. Wellington caught him with his own clothesline
01:08:32coming back into the ring. Beautiful snap suplex right there. And as we all know,
01:08:36Flyin' Brian has had a history of some minor back trouble and that's not going to help it.
01:08:45Pillman tossed outside.
01:08:49And Wellington waits as a referee uses his 10 count. Referee Bill Alfonso.
01:08:53Tremendous amount of international experience. From facelock. Oh my! He brought him from the
01:09:03outside. And that's not a disqualification. He was on the outside when he brought him over,
01:09:09so it's not a disqualification. And we'll add it again. There are no pads outside this ring.
01:09:15Suplex from in the ring, over the top, outside to the concrete. And Pillman makes the tag
01:09:22to Jushin Thunder Liger. Liger, those martial arts clothes. And Wellington slowing things down,
01:09:33working on the legs. Which is a smart move. He can't match up with aerial tactics with
01:09:38Jushin Thunder Liger. His key, get this guy down on the mat and torture him down there.
01:09:43And that's what they're going to do. Headbutt. And a chop by Benoit. And another on Liger.
01:09:58Whoa! What a vicious clothesline by Benoit and Jushin Thunder Liger. And Liger in trouble.
01:10:04Another football block that pays his quickening here. Oh, he got him. A big roundhouse karate
01:10:18kick there. And Benoit has gained the offensive advantage here on his nemesis from Japan.
01:10:28Thunder Liger in trouble. His head rammed into the top turnbuckle. And Benoit tags in Wellington.
01:10:35Wellington, very, very strong. And he threw him over the top. Referee Bill Alfonso was
01:10:45putting Wellington out. Or excuse me, Benoit out. That should have been an automatic
01:10:49disqualification. And now, well, he took a chance. And my God, there's no padding, Jess,
01:10:55all the way over the top. This is unbelievable. They're going from the top rope. That's about
01:10:59an eight or nine foot drop down to cement. No padding here in WCW outside the ring. Just cement.
01:11:11Chop made. Irish whip, far corner. Liger trying to get him up and over and does. He's successful.
01:11:21Wellington tried to fight it as long as he could. And Liger makes a tag. And the fly in Brian.
01:11:26Brian Brian's got one thing on his mind. That's a rematch with Scotty Flamingo as the tag has been
01:11:33made. And why? Right hand top helmet and a job. Hillman now in trouble. Another effective football
01:11:45block by Benoit Hillman. Oh, he took him all the way outside. Sidestep and took him outside. Yes.
01:11:54And I'll tell you what, the concrete seems to be getting more used than the mat in this match.
01:11:59These guys are going up, down, around and always seem to end up out on the concrete floor when it's
01:12:04all said and done. And while I'm top and goes up with him, Hillman is up there and a suplex.
01:12:13From the top. Benoit in trouble. Brian Brian goes up the ladder again. Up on top. It's legal by
01:12:23N.W.A. rules. Unfortunately for Benoit, he went outside. Here comes flying Brian.
01:12:39What high risk offense we're seeing right here from these four.
01:12:52And they are exchanging right hands outside the ring. They better be aware of the referee's count.
01:12:58Thank you. Both both teams would be eliminated if a double count out occurred. Tag made. Benoit
01:13:06tagging in Wellington. As we mentioned, Wellington, the Western Canadian champion.
01:13:12Hillman tags in Jushin Thunder Liger.
01:13:19Irish with far side and nobody there this time. And Wellington went over the top.
01:13:25Now look at Liger. He's up on top. Crossbody off the top turnbuckle to the concrete.
01:13:36And Liger makes it back in. Wellington's going to have a tough time returning to the ring.
01:13:42Jushin Liger needs to go to a neutral corner so the ref can begin the count.
01:13:47All four of these athletes really putting it on the line here. Remember, it's single
01:13:53elimination. You lose, you're out of it. He tried to take him down, but that was a good
01:13:59counter by Wellington. Now he's going for the cover. He hooks a leg and he got two.
01:14:04An excellent counter move by Wellington on a patented move by Jushin Thunder Liger.
01:14:09Apparently Wellington watching the film, knowing Liger's move, dropped him flat on his back and
01:14:14hurt him. And here comes the tag and Benoit back into the ring on Jushin Thunder Liger and a double
01:14:20team going on in the corner. Benoit trained in Japan for one year before turning pro.
01:14:26So he knows the Japanese style very well. And as we mentioned, he and Liger feuded for quite some
01:14:31time in some historic IWGP Championship matches. And now it's Benoit putting Liger up on top.
01:14:40They're both on top. Oh, he turned it in midair. He went into a crossbody from a suplex,
01:14:47to a crossbody, and Wellington prevents the three count. What an adjustment made in midair
01:14:53by Jushin Thunder Liger. Tremendous move, but great thinking on the part of Wellington. He
01:14:57got in there and made this thing. Whoa, what a beautiful karate kick by Jushin Thunder Liger.
01:15:03Look at this move. Unbelievable. The moonsault for the middle rope. It's a breathtaking move
01:15:10and Liger and Pillman now have regained solidly the offensive advantage. The tag made and here
01:15:16comes Pillman back in. What a breathtaking offensive display we're seeing here on TBS.
01:15:23And I know we're beating it to death, Jim Ross, but the mats outside the ring have been removed.
01:15:29All that is happening on concrete floor. Benoit with a forearm to the ribs there.
01:15:39Comes back with a right hand. You got to hand it to Benoit. Man, he is a double tough customer.
01:15:45Waist lock and this time Pillman viciously ran into the foot. His face struck by Wellington there.
01:15:53I'll tell you, Wellington's a thinker in that ring because Pillman was going for a roll up
01:15:58right there and Wellington came by and caught him with the leg and now it looks like he's
01:16:01going up to the top. Wellington didn't take a chance. No, he went for the drop kick. But Pillman
01:16:09quickly adjusted and rolled out of the way. Now Pillman crawling. He needs to make the tag.
01:16:14It's closer and closer to his corner. We got a race to see who can get to the corner first to
01:16:19get the fresh man in and Pillman's done it. Here comes Liger. Liger suplex. Benoit illegally pulls
01:16:29Liger off of Wellington and now Pillman in. All four in the ring, but Liger and Wellington are
01:16:35the legal man. The referee should pay attention to the guys in the ring and forget about the ones
01:16:45outside the ring. Pillman and Benoit are beating the heck out of each other outside. The referee
01:16:56should not concern himself with the two combatants outside the ring. His job is the guys in the ring.
01:17:03They've got him set up. Oh, the Canadian team ran together. Drop kick by Pillman knocks Benoit
01:17:09outside. Watch Liger up on top and the moonsault. He hit him with it. He's got the leg hook and he
01:17:16got three. Pillman and Liger have upset the Canadians. Ladies and gentlemen, here are your
01:17:22winners, the team of Jushin, Thunder Liger and Brian. What a memorable match. We may never forget
01:17:33the offensive display and the chances they have taken here on TVM. Here you see it here. Here's
01:17:39the moonsault outside the ring. Unbelievable on the concrete floor. The most gutsy move I have
01:17:46ever seen in wrestling history right there. And there's the reverse moonsault off the rope,
01:17:52center of the ring. Liger hooking the leg, getting the three count and a big victory
01:17:57for the former adversaries, now partners, Jushin, Thunder Liger and Brian Pillman.
01:18:03Fans, we're trying to have an update for you on this meeting with the NWA and WCW officials.
01:18:07It's going on right now and we'll be back after this timeout.
01:18:21The action continues in the first round of the NWA World Tag Team Tournament
01:18:27on World Championship Wrestling's Clash of the Champions.
01:18:32Ladies and gentlemen, the following contest on the Clash of the Champions. It is set for one
01:18:39fall with a 20 minute time limit. Introducing team number one, representing the Dominican Republic
01:18:48at a total combined weight of 502 pounds, the Head Hunters.
01:18:57The match team known as the Head Hunters unseated in the NWA World Tag Team Tournament,
01:19:02making their way to the ring. Ladies and gentlemen, don't forget to join me this Sunday
01:19:06on AM 750 WSB for a radio program, nine o'clock Eastern time this Sunday. We'll be taking your
01:19:12calls on WSB AM 750, the home of the Atlanta Falcons. And now let's go back up to Gary Capetta.
01:19:20And ladies and gentlemen, their opponents, representing Japan at a total combined weight
01:19:28of 445 pounds, the team of Hiroshi Ase and Akira Nogami.
01:19:39Ase on your right, Nogami with that face paint and unusual headdress.
01:19:46The number two seed in the NWA World Tag Team Tournament. Ase, a member of the 1988
01:19:59Olympic team representing Japan. He was a Greco-Roman wrestler. A lot of pageantry here, Jess.
01:20:07Yeah, there certainly is. You know, what I noticed here, the Head Hunters from the Dominican
01:20:11Republic and Jim Ross, they must apparently thought that we only had black and white TV.
01:20:17They're pretty basic, black and white. We'll see how they're going to fare against one of the great
01:20:24teams in this tournament, a team I've really looked, I'm really looking forward to seeing
01:20:29in action here. Nogami is another former IWGP junior heavyweight champion, avid golfer and
01:20:37an outstanding amateur in his scholastic days. And it will be Nogami starting out against,
01:20:46for the lack of imagination, we'll call this one Head Hunter number two. Number two, you want to
01:20:51start with two rather than one? I think so. Okay, one's on the apron. Now you keep it straight, Ross,
01:20:56because I'll get confused. Side headlock applied and a good football block by number two here.
01:21:05Fans, we're still trying to sort out this mess. And indeed, it is a mess in the locker room area.
01:21:10Medical attendants have taken the Puerto Rican team from the arena. And they're meeting now
01:21:17the teamwork by the Head Hunters taking down Nogami. And WCW and NWA officials are meeting now
01:21:23to try to come up with some sort of solution to this because we know all you fans wanted to see
01:21:28the Steiners, the number one seed in action here tonight. Whoa, great martial arts kick by Nogami.
01:21:38I'll tell you what's interesting about this tournament, Jim Ross, you alluded to it before,
01:21:42the many different styles we're seeing here in the world of professional wrestling spanning the globe.
01:21:49You want to throw in the thrill of victory or anything along those lines? Agony of defeat,
01:21:53spanning the globe. Agony of defeat? You got your shoes on. There ain't no agony in your feet.
01:21:57I can't smell them, Ross. This is Head Hunter number one.
01:22:04We know nothing of the Head Hunters. They did not want to communicate with Mr. Ventura
01:22:11or myself before we went on today. I didn't try to communicate with him. There he got him.
01:22:16Oh, clothesline Nogami right across the top rope. Good move there. Almost a page out of
01:22:21Stunning Steve Austin's playbook in a stun gun. It's interesting the Head Hunters taking an early
01:22:27advantage here on the Japanese team. Backbreaker applied by the big man from the Dominican Republic,
01:22:35lateral press, and Nogami able to kick out before three.
01:22:51Another spinning martial arts kick, and Nogami with a karate thrust to the neck.
01:23:04Tag made. Here comes the senior member of the team, Hiroshi Hase.
01:23:14He's a phenomenal wrestler. As I said, a member of the 88
01:23:17Japanese Olympic team competed in Greco-Roman wrestling.
01:23:23And Hase's going to rough it up a little bit now, and you see the Japanese team now cutting
01:23:27off the ring and taking control over the Head Hunters from the Dominican Republic.
01:23:31The winner of this match will meet the Fabulous Freebirds
01:23:35on July the 12th. Wow. At the Great American Bash pay-per-view. Another tremendous
01:23:40martial arts move. These guys are equally adept with their feet as they are their hands.
01:23:46Scoops him up into a slam. Big splash right off the top. And now Hase, the legal man, up on top.
01:23:55Oh, he went for a double knee drop. And he literally drove both knees into the canvas.
01:24:01Is that Head Hunter one or two? That's number one.
01:24:09Are you sure, Ross? I think it's two.
01:24:14Well, you might be right.
01:24:17Side slam.
01:24:21Lateral press. He neglected to hook the leg and neutralize the lower body.
01:24:25Got two out of it, but couldn't hold him down for three.
01:24:32Going for a double suplex. And they got it.
01:24:37Head Hunter number two rolling over on top and lateral press again.
01:24:43I like the move of the referee there. He made the second Head Hunter clear the ring
01:24:48before he started the count. I love it. The rules are stiffening here in WCW.
01:24:52Big four in the mid-back. Oh, and a karate kick. He caught him in the face with that one.
01:25:03He caught him in the face with that one. And now offensively,
01:25:07the Japanese team seem to be taking over, Jess, the number two seed.
01:25:12They absolutely seem to be taking over, but I don't think they really should have been
01:25:16rated number two. They haven't shown me enough to be the number two seed.
01:25:23Illegal Head Hunter in the ring. Referee Mike Atkins has got to put a couple of guys out of here.
01:25:29Belly to back German suplex. A pair of German suplexes. And they got him.
01:25:33Ladies and gentlemen, the winners of the match, the Japanese contingent of Akira Nogami and Hiroshi Hase.
01:25:44So, July 12th on pay-per-view from Albany, Georgia Civic Center, it will be Hase Nogami,
01:25:50the number two seed, advancing to the quarterfinals to take on the U.S. Tag Champions,
01:25:55the Freebirds. And here you see the replay right here. Look at this. Wham! Both Japanese using
01:26:03the German style suplex into the bridge, getting both Head Hunters down and a double three-pound,
01:26:08a double win for the Japanese team. Fans, we hope to have more on this
01:26:12Puerto Rican situation. And Jesse Ventura will talk to Ron Simmons next.
01:26:20You know what I love about pro wrestling? You get a lot of crossover athletes. Athletes that
01:26:35maybe starred in football or whatever. And my guest at this time is a former All-American
01:26:41football player, certainly an All-American wrestler today from Florida State University,
01:26:47Mr. Ron Simmons! Well, ladies and gentlemen, as Ron Simmons makes his way to the ring,
01:26:53don't forget, great, exciting WCW action this Friday in Topeka at the Expo Center,
01:26:59Saturday in Milwaukee at Mecca, this Sunday in Chicago at the UIC Pavilion,
01:27:04and another big national TV taping back in Atlanta at Center Stage on Monday, June 29th.
01:27:10Back up to Jeff.
01:27:16Ron Simmons, you had a great career at Florida State with Coach Bobby Bowden. Now you're in
01:27:24World Championship Wrestling, and you made a statement to me a while back that you have a
01:27:29goal that you've set out for yourself, and that is one to become the first black world champion
01:27:37in WCW history. That's right, Jesse. You know, ever since Ron Simmons has been on this earth,
01:27:46people have put the odds against me. They said when I was raising myself on the streets that
01:27:51I wouldn't live to be 20. They said when I went down to Florida State as a 219-pound freshman
01:27:56that I wouldn't be no match for 310-pound nose center. Well, here I am, and I made three times
01:28:03All-America, Heisman Trophy candidate, and in this sport, I plan to go where no black man has
01:28:09gone before, and that's straight to the top and become the first man to wear that belt.
01:28:18Now, you know, Mr. Simmons, I could appreciate your great college background.
01:28:23I could appreciate the- wait a minute. We got the seven-time World Heavyweight Champion here,
01:28:31Mr. Harley Race, along with the Super Invader. Jesse, let me tell you this. I heard Sting out
01:28:38here a few minutes ago. I heard him run in his mouth about Harley Race and Big Van Vader.
01:28:47Let me just a minute. Ron Simmons, you're a friend of the champion, Mr. Sting.
01:28:58So, do me a favor and be an errand boy and run me back a message for Sting.
01:29:08Well, let me tell you something. You got your year wrong, and you got my name wrong. This is
01:29:14the year almost 2000. This ain't the 18th century, and my name ain't Gopher, and if you want Sting,
01:29:21you go get him yourself. Let me tell you something, Mr. Simmons.
01:29:27Seven different times, I was World's Heavyweight Champion, and I had
01:29:35a boy like you carrying my bag. Well, that was too insulting. What a distasteful remark,
01:29:43and Simmons has got to fight them both. The Super Invader hammering away at Ron Simmons.
01:29:49Race with that left hand. They're both double teaming Simmons, and Simmons kicks Race in the
01:29:55midsection. Oh, what an elbow, and a clothesline. Simmons will fight them both. Football tackle,
01:30:00and Race goes down. A clothesline, and Masked Man goes down. Ron Simmons is no messenger.
01:30:10He is an All-American. Oh, he has both of them leaving the ring. What a chaotic situation.
01:30:19Fans, we'll be back. Tony Schiavone talks to Bill Watts. All I can say, I guess the interview is
01:30:26over. Wow, Jim Ross. Ron Simmons running both the Super Invader and the seven-time champion
01:30:35right out of the ring. Fans, Tony Schiavone talks to Bill Watts next.
01:30:48Welcome back, everyone, to the Clash of the Champions. Let's try to get to the bottom of
01:31:07this situation. Tony Schiavone standing by with Bill Watts. Okay, thank you very much, Jim Ross.
01:31:12Yes, there's been a lot of confusion tonight here on the Clash of the Champions centering on the
01:31:17Puerto Rican team. I know we've had meetings in the back with NWA officials and WCW officials,
01:31:21Bill. Well, Tony, it looks like there's more or less a jurisdictional dispute because this is the
01:31:27NWA Tag Team Tournament, but it's presented by the World Championship Wrestling. And so it looks
01:31:34like the NWA president's going to resign because his philosophy and my philosophy differs a little
01:31:40bit. And one thing I've always feel like is the fans and the people that support wrestling,
01:31:46they deserve to get everything they paid for.
01:31:55And when you have an opportunity to get more than you paid for, that's even better.
01:31:59And what's happened, we're not to the bottom of what's happened to the Puerto Rican team.
01:32:04I don't think it takes a rocket scientist to figure out who caused the car wreck, whether or
01:32:10not there was even a car involved. The bottom line is this, that the NWA said that that we'd
01:32:18have to wait until the Great American Bash to see the second round of this Tag Team Tournament. And
01:32:25I said, as WCW executive vice president, because I went to Steiner's and I went to Doc and Gordy
01:32:33and I said, you ought to get it on. You ought to hook him up.
01:32:41And let me tell you, both of them said, let's hook it up. So tonight, right here and now,
01:32:48we're going to start round two. Round two starts the night of the NWA Tag Team Tournament.
01:32:56We're going to hook him up. All right. That's from Bill Watts. And we'll be back
01:33:00on the Clash of the Champions.
01:33:01Ladies and gentlemen, the following contest, it is the first match in the second round of the NWA
01:33:29Tag Team Tournament. Introducing team number one, at a total combined weight of 540 pounds,
01:33:39now residing in Nagoya, Japan. First, Dr. Death, Steve Williams. His tag team partner,
01:33:49Terry Bam Bam Gordy. Well, fans, we thought about this for the Great American Bash. Remember,
01:33:56the Bash starts on July 1st in Macon, Georgia. July 3rd, Chattanooga, Tennessee. July 4th in
01:34:02Baltimore at the Arena. And the big one, Georgia Power Safety Night in the Omni in Atlanta on
01:34:07Sunday, July 5th. And what a matchup. This is going to be Becca the Gary, Michael the Pada.
01:34:14And ladies and gentlemen, their opponents from Detroit, Michigan. Total combined weight,
01:34:20525 pounds. They are the WCW World Tag Team Champions, the Steiner Brothers.
01:34:33Well, the Steiner Brothers have got their game face on, no doubt about it. And what a bonus.
01:34:39What a ruling by Cowboy Bill Watts. We did not have to wait until July 12th. And quite frankly,
01:34:45I don't care if the NWA president resigns or not. I wanted to see this one all along.
01:34:50Absolutely. Let the guy resign. Who cares whether he's working or not on the NWA?
01:34:56This is the match of matches right now. Williams and Gordy against the Steiner Brothers. And of
01:35:02course, traditionally, Scott Steiner always starts the match off for the Steiner Brothers.
01:35:07We'll have to wait and see who will start. And it looks like Bam Bam, wait a minute,
01:35:12Bam Bam Gordy and Rick Steiner starting this match off. Very unusual, Jim Ross.
01:35:17Big brother Rick Steiner knows the consequences of this one. It's sudden death. It's single
01:35:22elimination. Attempted single leg by Terry Bam Bam Gordy. But Steiner able to pull away into the
01:35:29ropes and we have a clean break. And the dog face not smiling, not with that very kid like grin.
01:35:36He is all business. What a matchup. So much speculation about what it would be like when
01:35:45these two teams met here at this tournament. Both guys jockeying for position along the ropes.
01:35:53What you got here happening right now, Jim Ross, is a feeling out session right here.
01:35:58They're going to feel each other out. They're going to do some amateur wrestling moves,
01:36:01try to get an advantage, try to get a psych out job on the other team.
01:36:07But at some point they'll start mixing it up and they'll start roughing it up. Mark my words.
01:36:15Nice go behind, take down, waist lock, take down by Rick Steiner cross face,
01:36:19but Gordy is in the ropes and we'll have another break.
01:36:23You know, they needed maybe to expand this ring about four feet for these teams.
01:36:28Steiner brothers, the all Americans, the university of Michigan.
01:36:32Another single leg, a tip and single leg pickup by Terry Bam Bam Gordy.
01:36:38Gordy caught him with a forearm, takes down her office feet, trying to work on the legs
01:36:42or trying to work on the knee, trying to turn him perhaps in a half crab.
01:36:46And Steiner again, able to make his way to the ropes. And again, Gordy breaks cleanly.
01:36:51And that's the tougher difference between amateur wrestling and amateur wrestling.
01:36:55Right there, you saw Gordy had the leg hook, couldn't get him down. He popped him with a
01:37:00forearm that would not be allowed in any amateur wrestling match. But here in the pros, totally
01:37:05legal. Tag made. Here comes Scott Steiner in.
01:37:12He comes in hammering away with those forearms, trying to go lock him up for a belly to belly
01:37:16suplex, but Gordy able to block it. Scott usually sucks him in right there for that
01:37:22belly to belly suplex, but Gordy able to block it. You see Gordy reaching down with that left
01:37:26hand. Now he's trying to get his arm inside Steiner's arm and he's got it. Whoa, and over
01:37:30he goes. Beautiful move. Takes him down. Look at the train of strength. Scottie trying to
01:37:35bridge with Gordy. And Gordy, obviously trying to make his way momentarily anyway to the
01:37:44ropes. But Scottie again, great strength by Scott. Gordy just dropped down with him and Scott
01:37:53finally turns him over. Excellent power moves, good combinations and block by both teams.
01:38:03High single leg takedown and Gordy tags in Dr. Steve Williams. As we said, Williams,
01:38:09four-time wrestling All-American from the University of Oklahoma. Scott Steiner,
01:38:14outstanding competitor for the University of Michigan.
01:38:17A natural rivalry here. The Big Ten against the Big Eight.
01:38:25Dock in deeply, single leg takedown, waist lock. He's behind him now. Scottie able to
01:38:30set out and counter it. Rose Dock on his shoulders. Both men are docked specifically in the ropes
01:38:36there. Both men jockeying for position here. Dock takes him down. Great upper body strength
01:38:49by Dr. Steve Williams. One of the strongest men in the sport. Back heel trip and a single leg
01:38:55by Scott Steiner. Steiner with a leg lace trying to turn Dock over and now behind in a ride.
01:39:01Move and counter move. Look at the strength of Dr. Death right there.
01:39:12Actually has Scott Steiner suspended right in the air. Both men falling into the ropes at
01:39:17this point and the referee will ask for a clean break. Whether he gets it, we'll see.
01:39:21The game face of Dr. Death. Etched with determination. And they're official here.
01:39:30Timber's beginning to flare. Dock was a little concerned that it took Scott a little longer than
01:39:35he wanted in the break. Thought it was a good break personally, but in any event, Dr. Death
01:39:42took exception with a referee. Side headlock, tag made. Rick Steiner, the former heavyweight
01:39:48from Michigan against the former heavyweight from Oklahoma. These guys at one time were tag
01:39:52team partners. And he got him! He suplexed him! He got him! Bell to belly suplex. Tremendous
01:40:01trajectory. Low center of gravity by Rick Steiner. He's got it! He's got it! He's got it!
01:40:10And you can see the psych out being played right there by the Steiner brothers. They're sitting in
01:40:22the center of the ring, ready to take on Dr. Death and Bam Bam Gordy. But Jess, Scott Steiner very,
01:40:31very anxious for the opponents to get back in the ring. Doc and Gordy had the opportunity to
01:40:35converse. Talk strategy. And I think that's something we want to watch as it evolves. The
01:40:41strategy in this match. Scott is a very emotional young man. And it's hard not to be emotional when
01:40:48the stakes are this high. No doubt about that. Dogface forcing Doc into the ropes. Doc coming
01:40:55back out. Both been muscling for position here. A lot of amateur technique
01:41:03being utilized.
01:41:16These guys were a member of an organization called the Varsity Club a long time ago.
01:41:20Good takedown by Rick Steiner. Takes Doc down. And now he's behind him. Front faceline.
01:41:27Front faceline. Trying to crossface it right there. Look at him driving that in. Driving the
01:41:32forearm in right there. Doc back up vertical. Pushes now. Forces. Rick Steiner. Oh my.
01:41:41And double leg. He double-legged him. He's got him down. And they're going fist and fire now.
01:41:47It's exploded here. Rick Steiner sticking those fists right in Doc's face. I love it, Jim Ross.
01:41:53They did their amateur wrestling. They did their fair wrestling. But now the tempers are flaring.
01:41:58You're seeing the forearms. You're seeing the punches. And the amateur wrestling back in again
01:42:03with Doc up on top. And him driving a forearm into the back of Rick Steiner's head. Doc had
01:42:09the leg break fine and drove that forearm, as Jesse Ventura said, in the back of his head. Oh
01:42:13my. He turned him inside out with that clothesline. What a move. What impact. And I don't think Rick
01:42:22Steiner has ever been clotheslined that hard in his life. Doc makes the exchange with Terry Gordy.
01:42:31And Rick Steiner is in a dazed state. And another clothesline. This may be over. He may have him
01:42:36here, lateral press, but Dogface able to get a shoulder up. Gosh, what impact.
01:42:45I look forward to the back of the head. Or the side of the head, rather. And another one. And
01:42:49Dogface comes back with a ride. And Gordy with his hands in the face, trying to rake the eyes.
01:42:55But he follows him in with that clothesline. Excellent move by Bam Bam Gordy. Irish whip
01:43:00into the turnbuckle. Followed it in with the quick clothesline. Trying to suplex. Steiner reverses it.
01:43:06Whoa. Counter move. Suplex to suplex by Rick Steiner. Rick near his corner. And he tags his
01:43:17brother Scott. He'll be in with Terry Bam Bam Gordy. Irish whip to the near side here. Oh,
01:43:22yellow bandit. Big body drop. Clothesline knocks down Big Bam Bam.
01:43:30Full bars hook now. He's got him. And takes him down with a modified powerbomb. And Neil's Dr. Nick coming in.
01:43:40Irish whip, center of the ropes. Goes for the dropkick. But nobody there.
01:43:45Fell right on the back of his head. Gordy trying to turn him over. He has.
01:43:52He falls back with it. Submission move here, Jess. Absolutely. He's trying to lock his hands.
01:43:58And Scott Steiner reaching for the ropes. It's the only way out of this.
01:44:05Submission move. Chin lock. He's in the ropes right here by us.
01:44:11Gordy pulled him away from the ropes before the referee could get there.
01:44:16Finally make some break. Good officiating. And Bam Bam Gordy with a major advantage there with
01:44:22the submission move. Took a lot out of Scott Steiner. Stag tags Dr. Steve Williams. And look
01:44:28at this double team move. Oh yeah. I like that one. A gut buster. And now Doc working on the lower back.
01:44:35That seems to be their focus now to work on the back. Scott Steiner.
01:44:38Vicious kicks with a flat foot by Dr. Depp. And drops the elbow right in the spine. They're working
01:44:43on the kid's back. The youngster from Bay City, Michigan being punished here now by Dr. Steve Williams.
01:44:51The number one seed versus the number four seed. That's the second round of the tournament starts.
01:44:55Look at the strength. Look at the strength. He's manhandling Scott Steiner on top.
01:45:00Ladder press and a near fall. Very near fall right there and a little frustration by Dr.
01:45:05Depp. Steve Williams. He thought he had Scott Steiner pinned. A block. A kickback by Steiner.
01:45:11Another one. But Dr. Depp with a beautiful leg sweep right there. Great leg sweep by Doc.
01:45:15Pulling Scott to the corner. And then makes a tag to Terry Bam Bam Gordy. Gordy and Williams now.
01:45:22With the advantage. And they're punishing Scott Steiner. Gordy's got him up on his shoulder.
01:45:28Power body slam drives him into the canvas. And he drove his shoulder right into the
01:45:33abdomen during the slam. Tremendous high impact move. And Gordy now going for a submission.
01:45:38He's got the leg grapevine.
01:45:42Twisting that leg. Turning the knee. They're working on the knee right now of Scott Steiner.
01:45:47And the key here is Scott Steiner's been in the ring far too long. Bam Bam Gordy and Dr.
01:45:53Depp. Steve Williams able to make a couple tags. Scott Steiner in the ring far too long.
01:45:59Scott Steiner in the ring far too long. If he doesn't tag his brother Rick pretty soon,
01:46:04this one's going to be all over but the shout. Scott trying to crawl his way to the corner.
01:46:08He knows the predicament he's in. He must, he must make the tag. But can he? Can he reach his brother?
01:46:14Gordy able to pull Scott from the corner back toward the center of the ring and tags in Dr.
01:46:19Depp. And Gordy stopping Scott from making the tag. Williams the legal man in. Double team.
01:46:26And here comes Rick Steiner in the ring. He's illegal. The referee will be forced to put him
01:46:32out. Referee got a near fall there. Tremendous double team offense by Williams and Gordy.
01:46:39And Scott Steiner is being battered at this point in time in the contest.
01:46:45They're working on his leg. And that has been their focus for the last few moments.
01:46:51Great move by the kid. And Scott Steiner pulled it out from somewhere, leaped into the air
01:46:58and kicked the heel of his boot right into the eye of Dr. Steve Williams.
01:47:03Scott has got to make the tag. This is his chance to make the tag.
01:47:08His running lights have been dimmed. He's near his corner. His brother's there. His hand is out.
01:47:17The race is on. He made it. He did it. He made the tag. Rick Steiner the legal man.
01:47:37It's turned into a total brawl, a total fight. Rick Steiner getting double teamed now as Doc
01:47:43comes in from behind with Bam Bam Gordy. I'm very concerned not only about Rick Steiner but
01:47:48his brother Scott. His leg could be damaged. He's on the outside and Terry Gordy now on the outside
01:47:53with it. No, what's he saying? No tag. The referee did not see the tag. He can't count it. He's not
01:48:08a legal man. Scott Steiner is still the legal man as far as the referee is concerned. Doc
01:48:13hammered outside and now dog face. Rick Steiner now with Bam Bam Gordy. Scotty Steiner's knee
01:48:20has been damaged by Williams and Gordy as he rolls back outside. Both teams outside the ring.
01:48:26Now you got the discretion of the referee. Does he want a double countout? Here comes Dr. Death,
01:48:31Steve Williams. Oh, he drove the Oklahoma shoulder block right into the knee of Scott Steiner.
01:48:38Doc drove that knee viciously, his shoulder viciously into Scotty Steiner's knee.
01:48:45The referee's having a heck of a time separating Gordy and Rick Steiner.
01:48:51Scott Steiner's leg. I mean, this kid's knee has just been disintegrated. It would seem
01:48:57trying to get back up. The Steiner brothers facing the most fierce competition I have ever
01:49:06seen them have. Scott Steiner definitely hurt. The knee is hurt. Bam Bam Gordy exchanging with
01:49:12Rick Steiner. Referee must get some type of control. It's out of hand right now. Dr. Death.
01:49:19With Scott Steiner over his head. Extend the arms into a power slam. Modified stampede.
01:49:25He'll get him here. No, he won't. He didn't do it. He might have had him, but he didn't do it.
01:49:30He got two. And Dr. Death very upset at the tempo of the referee's count right there.
01:49:37Rick Steiner back in with Gordy. But remember, Scott is a legal man, as is Dr. Death, Steve Williams.
01:49:47Short clothesline. He's got him. He's got Doc. He's got him. Oh, wait. Oh, God. Gordy hit him from behind.
01:49:54He clipped him right into that knee. He got him. Dr. Death, Steve Williams, major upset.
01:50:02Dr. Death and Bam Bam Gordy have defeated the Steiner brothers here in the NWA tournament.
01:50:08Ladies and gentlemen, here are your winners, the team of Terry, Bam Bam Gordy, and Dr. Death,
01:50:14Steve Williams. The number four seed has upset the number one seed.
01:50:22Williams and Gordy have defeated the Steiner brothers, but Scott Steiner's knee
01:50:26has been damaged. How badly, we do not know. He went for the belly to belly, but Gordy caught him.
01:50:34He clipped him, as you'll see right here. Here's the replay right here. You see Bam Bam Gordy coming
01:50:39in from behind. An illegal clip right there. Took the knee out on Scott Steiner. Dr. Death lands on
01:50:45top. Steiner in obvious pain. Dr. Death gets the cover right there. Referee diving in one, two,
01:50:52and three. The first time I've ever seen the Steiner brothers beat. Let's go back to Tony
01:50:57and Magnum very quick. Okay, Jim and Jesse, so I guess the leaderboard, Magnum, and as shocked as
01:51:07we are, the leaderboard here will change as we can put this up here. Dr. Death, Steve Williams,
01:51:12and Terry Bam Bam Gordy have advanced now to the semifinals of the NWA World Tag Team Tournament.
01:51:17You suspect surprises. You suspect upsets in a tournament of this magnitude, but what we didn't
01:51:22expect was to see the opening round of the quarterfinals right here tonight, much less see
01:51:27the Steiner's upset at the hands of Doc and Gordy. This has been an unbelievable evening.
01:51:32Okay, let's go back to ringside. Well fans, as you can see, we are checking on the status of
01:51:37Scott Steiner. Obviously his knee has been badly damaged. They have been eliminated, Jess. The
01:51:42Steiner brothers eliminated from the tournament. Unbelievable. You gotta call it an upset. You
01:51:47could call it a cheap shot if you want to. Terry Bam Bam Gordy coming in with a clip, but he got
01:51:53away with it. Dr. Death getting the pinfall. First time I've ever seen the Steiner brothers defeated.
01:51:59Ladies and gentlemen, we'll talk more about this this Saturday morning on the Power Hour for Tony
01:52:03Schiavone, Magnum T.A., Eric Bischoff, Missy Hyatt, Gary Capetta, and Jesse Labonte Ventura.
01:52:08I'm Jim Ross saying so long from Charleston, South Carolina.
01:53:03you
