00:00When a young couple purchases a neighborhood haunt, they get much more than they bargained
00:11for.
00:12There was so much activity and there seemed to be so many entities in one location.
00:20Ghostly pranks quickly turn aggressive, threatening the safety and sanity of everyone who comes
00:27in the front door.
00:29We were dealing with something much bigger than ourselves.
00:32It was getting more personal, it was getting more dangerous.
00:35I was truly scared at that point.
00:38In America, there is real evil.
00:42It lurks in the darkest shadows in our most ordinary towns.
00:47Between the worlds we see and the things we fear, there are doors.
00:53When they are opened, nightmares become reality.
01:23In 2007, Jason Ryder surprises his wife, Lynn, with an unexpected gift.
01:36Okay, open them.
01:39What?
01:40It's Maury's.
01:43We are the new owners of Maury's.
01:46Maury's is a popular Merritt and Connecticut restaurant.
01:49Oh my God.
01:51So Maury's was basically the place that everyone has a story about in Merritt, because that
01:56is the place we all grew up.
01:57A lot of people from the town, they would go there.
02:01So it's almost like a cheers.
02:02What have you done?
02:06Jason and Lynn frequented Maury's on dates and dreamed they would one day own the place.
02:12I kind of got blindsided by the purchase of Maury's.
02:14I didn't know.
02:15Jason's pretty good about that kind of stuff.
02:18After three months of renovations, Lynn and Jason renamed the bar Ryder's.
02:32Lynn's father, Barry, is recruited to help.
02:35Lynn is a people person.
02:37If she has people around her, she's totally happy.
02:41Both Lynn and Jason quickly discover that running a restaurant and a bar is more challenging
02:46than they ever imagined.
02:48Lynn, we are on our last bottle of tequila and the ice machine is on the fritz again.
02:52We were up there seven days a week.
02:53Some days it was 15, 16 hours a day.
02:56We were still trying to learn the business.
02:58Also, we need to order more shot glasses.
03:00I just ordered new ones last week.
03:02Where'd they go?
03:03I don't know.
03:04I usually had about 48 shot glasses.
03:06As the weeks went on, I was down to like two shot glasses.
03:10And then I would buy 24 more, and a couple days later I'd be down to five shot glasses.
03:15This is getting expensive.
03:16So I questioned my staff as to, are you breaking them, are you throwing them out, are people
03:20stealing them?
03:24The shot glasses are not the only items disappearing in the bar.
03:28Lynn's keys frequently go missing.
03:30We would spend sometimes almost up to an hour looking for keys.
03:34They would go missing pretty much every day for a while.
03:37In the beginning I thought I was losing my mind.
03:39And then it started happening more frequently.
03:41So I started questioning who's doing it.
03:45Lynn often comes in early in the morning to catch up on paperwork.
03:49It's the only quiet time she has before opening the restaurant for the day.
03:54Up until now, she's never been disturbed.
04:11Dad?
04:12Jason, is that you?
04:16No.
04:25Lynn Marie.
04:28I heard my name, and not just my name, I heard Lynn Marie, which is my full name.

04:41Dad, Jason, what?
04:42What do you guys want?
04:43I'm swamped here.
04:44It sounded like it was coming from out in the restaurant.
04:46Like my husband or my dad was yelling for me.
04:49I wasn't really pleased that I had to get up because I was extremely busy.

05:05I looked around, and the building was empty.
05:08And the hair stood up on the back of my neck.
05:12I told Jason I felt like I was being watched.
05:15He basically just said, listen, you're tired.
05:18You work a lot of hours.
05:24Jason's assurance that nothing strange is going on does not make Lynn feel better.
05:30When something inside me tells me that I need to kind of be on alert, there's usually a reason.
05:37Several days later, it's Super Bowl Sunday, and Lynn prepares for a party at the restaurant.
05:54Suddenly, Lynn feels a tap on her shoulder.
06:00And then another.
06:02The second tap was harder.
06:05It was hard enough that my attention needed to be caught.
06:12Marci?
06:16Marci, you there?
06:19Lynn, do you need help?
06:23You got it?
06:29Were you just in the basement?
06:32No, Lynn, I just got here.
06:35I need to get back upstairs.
06:37Things moving or disappearing, that's one thing.
06:41For something to be able to come up and touch you, I mean, it's scary.
06:47Over the next few weeks, Lynn continues to have strange experiences in the restaurant.
06:54But each time she tries to talk about it with her family, they laugh it off.
07:00Everybody was teasing me at that point.
07:02Like, oh, what's the matter, Lynn? Is your ghost do it?
07:05So it was a big joke. I mean, it was a constant joke.
07:08Well, we joked around a lot because we just thought this was just, you know, it was a way to ease attention.
07:15You leaving?
07:16Mm-hmm. I need to go to the post office. I'll lock up.
07:20Okay.
07:29DOOR SLAMS
07:49I had beer bottles all over the place.
07:52They were on the floor. They were moved around.
07:55I'm the only one in the bar.
07:57The bar is locked.
08:00I cannot fathom how this could have happened.
08:03There's no logical explanation.
08:06I get very, very uneasy because I can't figure this out.
08:16The next day, Barry stocks the beer cooler before opening.
08:21He thinks he's alone.
08:25DOOR SLAMS

08:42I was afraid.
08:43If you've ever been in combat, if you've ever had somebody literally trying to kill you, that's the feeling you get.
08:50And that's the exact feeling I had.

09:03Barry Eichenauer is working alone in his daughter's bar
09:07when someone or something locks him in the beer cooler.

09:20I caught my breath, and now I had to get my wits about me.
09:23I had to figure out what was going on.

09:30Yeah?
09:31Are you OK? I heard someone yelling.
09:32I'm OK now.
09:33The look on his face, alone, told me that he was a little scared.
09:38He was never going to admit it to me.
09:40I've been in that cooler a million times.
09:44It's never locked on me.
09:46The door can't even close by itself.
09:50This is what really started me to get into her corner and say,
09:54look, you've got to figure out what's going on.
09:57Lynn fears there is something supernatural lurking in the shadows of her restaurant.
10:03Her mother convinces her that a psychic may see what Lynn cannot.
10:08Do you own a bar?
10:10Yes.
10:11I sense two mischievous entities at your restaurant.
10:16She said to me, you have two spirits,
10:18and they weren't really happy with some of the things I was doing.
10:21She told me that they had been there for many, many years,
10:24and instead of going into a power struggle with them,
10:27I needed to go back to the restaurant
10:29and kind of just make peace with the fact that they were there.
10:32They've taken several items and hidden them in the basement.
10:36And she described it with the dirt cellar.
10:38She told me exactly what corner and what box to look behind.
10:42She says, you'll find them.
10:48My parents had to drop me off at the restaurant.
10:50I immediately ran downstairs
10:52and started digging through exactly where she told me to go.
11:07The very moment that I pulled back the last box and found shot glasses,
11:13I kind of froze.
11:15I did freeze.
11:16I was like, whoa, okay.
11:25We were in the basement of the restaurant.

11:42exactly where the psychic said they would be.

12:05I didn't want my wife to pretty much be telling people about this
12:08because I don't want them to think that she was in no case,
12:10you know, seeing this or seeing that.
12:12I knew I wasn't crazy at that point,
12:14but that's when you really got to start going,
12:16okay, wait, we're dealing with something, you know,
12:19and you don't know what's going to happen.
12:30Two years later, Lynn hires Tito Corchato
12:33to be a bouncer and help out around the bar.
12:36She doesn't tell him about the strange occurrences.
12:39When I first started working at Ryder's,
12:41I didn't have any weird feelings towards the bar.
12:44I've never heard any stories about anything.
12:47Dad, would you run down to the basement
12:49and pick up a couple more boxes of martini glasses for me?
12:52Oh, I'll get them.
12:54Thanks, Tito.
12:56You could feel the change of temperature.
12:59It was very cold down there.
13:02Who's there?

13:09Register tape was thrown at me.

13:17I thought it was Jay playing around with me
13:20because Jay loves to play jokes,
13:22so I thought it was Jay.
13:26That same evening,
13:29Tito helps with cleanup after closing.
13:44To actually see pots flying off on their own
13:47when there's no one back there, that was the scariest moment.
13:50That made me believe that there were actually
13:53some supernatural activities going on at Ryder's.
13:59Later that night...
14:06Yeah?
14:08What is it?
14:10Okay, I'll meet the police there in a few minutes.
14:17The alarm company again?
14:19Third time this week.
14:21I swear.
14:36This particular time, the police didn't show up,
14:39so I figure somebody's breaking into the building.
14:52I see, like, three black shadows.
14:54I'm like, oh, here we go.
15:08Jason has no idea what danger is just behind the door.
15:22After the alarm goes off in the restaurant,
15:25Jason Ryder believes intruders have broken in.
15:30I figured I had to get into a fight,
15:32so I'm getting myself all pumped up,
15:34you know, all juiced up and everything else.
15:42I kick open the door, nobody's there.
15:45I'm like, oh, my God.
15:48I kick open the door, nobody's there.
15:59I go home.
16:01An hour later, the alarm goes off again.
16:03The alarm went off, like, five times that night.
16:18I pulled around your back door
16:21So get out from the front door till you stall
16:25You look like you're such a hassle
16:29I don't need you, so you need to leave
16:33Enough already!
16:38There he is!
16:40As the nightly bar scene at Ryder's picks up,
16:44Jason's secret grows even more difficult to keep.
16:52What the?
16:53The cue ball came up in the air
16:55and jumped over all the other balls and just hit the table.
17:01Listen, I didn't touch it.
17:02That is not okay.
17:04Guys, guys, I am so sorry.
17:06We are going to have to have this table checked
17:08to make sure that it's level.
17:10We chalked it up to the floors being unlevel that night or something.
17:13I didn't want to scare people.
17:14Okay, let's get up here.
17:16But the customers know what they saw.
17:21Later that same evening, a woman is in the ladies' restroom, alone.
17:33Hello?
17:39Is there anyone in here?
17:43No.
17:56Oh my God!
17:59I asked her if she was okay.
18:01And she couldn't talk to me at that point.
18:04She specifically said to me,
18:05I do not believe in heaven and I do not believe in hell.
18:08But I do not even know how to tell you what I just saw.
18:11You need to see something.
18:13She then asked me to please go into my bathroom and look at the wall.
18:20I am sorry.
18:21I don't know what to say.
18:27I was starting to feel hopeless.
18:30There were more and more people coming forward to me.
18:33And the more that people came forward to me,
18:35the more standoffish I was.
18:37Because not only could I not explain it to them,
18:40but I couldn't do anything to fix it.
18:51The paranormal pranks at Ryder's are no longer harmless.
18:55People are scared.
18:57Lynn and Jason are not sure how to solve the problem.
19:01They continue to run the restaurant as if nothing happened.
19:05I think my husband was frustrated because Jay is a fixer.
19:08And that's what he does.
19:09And he couldn't fix this.
19:11And I think that he didn't want to admit to me that he couldn't protect us.
19:16And I think that bothered him.
19:18Jason continues to do what he does best.
19:21Fix whatever is broken.
19:24On a 90 degree summer day,
19:26Jason is in the basement repairing a leaky pipe.
19:31As soon as I went in there, it was like just cold, dry air.
19:35Like death.
19:36I could see the smoke coming from my breath.
19:39And it was definitely not a cold day.

20:03Or I think I see somebody right there next to me.

20:08I knew I really saw something.

21:42And the energy was tight.
21:44It was almost as if you couldn't breathe.
21:46There was really nowhere for me to go at that point
21:48because I was in the back corner of the building.
21:50And I was alone.
21:51It scared me.

22:02It's one thing to know that there's a presence.
22:04It's another thing to know that they know you're there.
22:09The fact that it knew my name,
22:11and not just my first name,
22:13it bothered me.

22:25Lynn had a real sense that I wouldn't lead her astray.
22:28If she needed some type of therapy,
22:30I was going to send her to the right person.
22:32And if she needed the right paranormal investigative group,
22:35I would also be able to point her in the right direction.
22:39Karen arrives and takes a look around the entire restaurant,
22:43including the basement.
22:45My first feeling about it was it just felt heavy.
22:48The air felt heavy.
22:50When we had walked in, the room was ice cold.
22:53I got a sense of, why are you here,
22:56the minute I walked into the bar.
22:58Yep, this place is haunted.
23:00We've got something here.
23:06It's been my experience that mirrors,
23:09specifically antique mirrors,
23:11because they reflect back to us our own perceptions on reality,
23:15create doorways to other dimensions.
23:17And I thought to myself, oh yeah, that's the portal.
23:20That's where they're coming through.
23:22A portal is a doorway
23:25that can allow something from a different dimension
23:28to come into our particular plane of existence.

23:32Karen recommends Lynn get rid of the mirror
23:35and that she contact a paranormal investigation team
23:38Karen works with.
23:40A week later,
23:41Karen and the ghosts of New England Research Society
23:45arrive after closing to investigate.
23:49Kurt Knapp runs the team.
23:51I was very excited to get an investigation underway there.
23:54At the same time, I was a little bit skeptical
23:57because it just seemed to be too much going on there for any one place.
24:02Before arriving, Kurt Knapp researches Riders' history.
24:07We always try to look at the place from a historic perspective
24:10to see what happened there.
24:12Because in New England, there are so many layers of history.
24:15He learns Riders was originally two residences built in the 1800s.
24:20Later joined together to become a feed store, paint store,
24:24and finally Maury's before Lynn and Jason took over.
24:28Town lore claims two deaths resulted from a fire in 1976.
24:34Could these be the ghosts haunting the bar?
24:37Kurt approaches his investigations with an open mind.
24:41We try to approach each investigation with a scientific method
24:44and also a psychic method.
24:46We don't discount the client's claims
24:48that we take them with a grain of salt,
24:50realizing that most clients are not trained observers.
24:53We got everything under control.

25:13There was a heaviness in the air.
25:16And the minute I turned the corner,
25:19I got a sense of an entity that was over my left shoulder.
25:31I know you're here.

25:54When I asked telepathically, in what way are you weak,
25:58is it emotionally or physically, it answered both.

26:44in the dirt floor part of the cellar.

27:38He said it was like something just rushed right through me.
27:41He used the comparison of like throwing a handful of sand
27:44through a screen door.
27:45I think that he was trying to show us its power.
27:48That it could do things like this
27:50and we couldn't do anything about it.
27:52We were seeing and hearing these things for ourselves
27:55and there was absolutely no doubt in our mind
27:57that there was some serious paranormal activity
27:59happening at Riders.
28:00That night, Karen decides to do a clearing
28:04to communicate with spirits in the building
28:07and attempt to cross them over.
28:09We're going to use the tarot cards.
28:11The tarot cards provide Karen with an opportunity
28:14to communicate with the spirit through symbolism
28:17rather than trying to capture its voice again
28:19on a digital recorder.

28:29I immediately got the emperor card
28:32which would indicate a male energy.
28:35When I asked, how did you die?
28:38It gave me the hanged man, that he had hanged himself.
28:43Lynn is astonished.
28:45There was one patron who talked to my husband and us
28:49about when he was a little boy
28:51they used to work there
28:54and he had told us that there was someone
28:57who had died by hanging.
29:00When I asked, why do I feel that you are sad in some way?
29:04He gave me the three of swords,
29:06that he was divorced, separated, heartbroken,
29:09that there had been an issue.

29:12And when I asked him, do you want to leave?
29:14He gave me the sun card, yes.
29:17Okay, thank you.
29:19Now with your permission, I'm going to create a light
29:23and I want you to walk into it, do you understand?
29:31He says he wants to rest.
29:33He indicated to me that yes,
29:35he would be willing to take the chance to walk into it.
29:38I created the beam of light
29:40and then he just disappeared.
29:44He's gone.
29:49We had released one of the more frustrating entities,
29:53but given that the building has so much history,
29:56it certainly has more work.
29:57Karen believes at least one more entity remains in the building,
30:01but does not sense anything sinister.
30:04I can't say for sure that there aren't entities
30:08or an entity at Riders that wishes no one harm.
30:12I can say that we didn't receive any indication
30:16that Lynn would be in any danger.
30:18She did explain to me that there still could be
30:21other spirits that have not come forward yet.
30:24We're just going to have to wait and see.

30:58As soon as that hit happened, the feeling just came back.

32:36At that point, I knew that the spirit

34:06An afternoon at work suddenly takes a dark turn.
34:10I was hearing people's thoughts directed at me.
34:13It was as if I was being attacked by 57 people.

34:28At that point, I knew I had had it.

35:03I was in a full-out breakdown in my office that night.

35:09and I truly lost it all in one night.

35:17and stay away from the restaurant for a few days.

35:22She's like my partner.
35:23She's part of the business.

35:26She's the mother of my children.

35:30Jason also tells Lynn it's time to give up their dream.

35:42Something had to be done to relieve the pressure,
35:44a little bit of hope and prayer,
35:46and I don't think she was going to be able to come back out of it.

35:59a local psychic and spiritual healer, Pam Faith.
36:04I went to Pam to strengthen my energy again
36:08so that I could protect myself.
36:12It had nothing to do with the restaurant.
36:14It was me.
36:15I needed some clarity.
36:21But Pam immediately zeros in on the problems at Ryders
36:24and asks Lynn to see the restaurant.
36:28She said that we needed to deal with the building
