00:00Hello, the movie is here. Today we're reviewing a movie from 2000 called Tales of the Unusual, Chess.
00:10In the opening scenes, world chess champion Akira Kato plays a match against a computer called Super Blue at a special chess tournament.
00:19While Akira's brain can calculate only 3 moves per second, Super Blue can calculate up to 200 million moves per second.
00:27Akira's chances of winning seem very small, but if he loses, he'll be the first person in history to lose to a computer.
00:34While the intense match continues, it's obvious that he's having a hard time. In the end, he throws the king, accepting his defeat.
00:41The room becomes quiet, and no one can believe that the most talented chess player who has never lost a single match has just lost to a computer.
00:49Akira sits with his head facing the floor and is unable to work out what just happened.
00:54The host laughs at him, and the audience laughs at him, and the journalists take a picture of the humiliated former world champion.
01:01Akira hits the chess board, breaking it in half. Three years have passed since the incident.
01:07After the last match, Akira stopped playing chess, and he hasn't seen anyone since.
01:11The next scene shows us a few homeless people sitting on the side of the road.
01:16One of them is Akira, who spent all his money on alcohol and gambling, and now lives on the streets.
01:20A fancy car stands next to them, and two men in black cars go out.
01:25They forcefully take Akira and take him away. He is taken to a villa, where he is awaited by a rich old man.
01:31The man discovers that he knows who Akira is, which is very surprising, because he changed his name and identity.
01:37When Akira wants to know who he is, the man says it doesn't matter. He just wants to play a chess game with Akira.
01:44He discovers the chess board, which forces Akira to return soon.
01:48He gathers himself and finds an excuse, but the truth is that the thought of chess makes him angry in this part of his life.
01:54He turns away from the chess board, because he is not able to look at it.
01:58The old man says he lost all his money by betting on Akira in the last match.
02:02Since Akira has no money, the man wants him to play a match to make up for the loss.
02:07Akira is not sure what the man's real intentions are, but he knows that he does not want to do any business with him.
02:13To avoid the situation, he honestly tells the man not to play chess anymore, because he does not want to be a millionaire anymore.
02:21The man takes the king from Akira's side and says he lost without playing.
02:26This reminds Akira of his last defeat, which makes him angry.
02:29He stops the man and asks him to move his figure instead of his.
02:34Satisfied that he finally persuaded Akira, the old man plays his move.
02:38However, Akira refuses to turn to the chess board or touch the figures.
02:43Without looking, he tells the man to move his figures, sure that he will win this match.
02:49We notice that the old man is wearing headphones and talking to someone while playing.
02:53Akira walks to the window and sees a group of people underneath wearing white and black clothes and looking at each other.
03:00The pattern they are standing on is the same as the one on the board right now.
03:04When a man kills one of his figures in the game, the man who was in place of that figure is beaten and killed.
03:10Akira is shocked because of what he just saw.
03:13He asks the man if this is a joke.
03:16The man says that they are drunk soldiers, so he shouldn't be sorry for their death.
03:20Akira runs down the stairs to check the dead person, and he discovers that he is on the ground while the other players are standing quietly in their positions.
03:27He pulls out the knife from the man's body and sees that he is still alive.
03:31Although he is dead, the man asks him, what is your next move?
03:35After the man takes his last breath, the players walk around him, leaving Akira with a knife and a dead body in the middle of the street.
03:41The woman looks at him in that position and assumes that he did it.
03:46Akira falls over and pulls himself up, saying that he didn't do it.
03:50In the next scene, he is with his old doctor in the office, Seichiya Tomoda.
03:54The doctor is surprised to see him after so many years.
03:57He and Akira's wife, Kumi Kato, have been looking for Akira for the last three years.
04:01The flashback to three years ago shows us what happened after he lost the Super Blue game, and then Akira lost his desire for life.
04:08He had nightmarish chess figures trying to kill him.
04:12Nightmares turned into hallucinations that made his health even worse.
04:17He always compared his life to chess, and his wife was his queen.
04:21So when he lost the game, he left his queen, believing that he didn't deserve her anymore.
04:26Akira talks to the doctor about the incident that happened before, and tells him that maybe he should visit a psychiatrist.
04:31The doctor assumes that he was dreaming about the man who was killed, but Akira insists that what he saw was reality.
04:38The doctor asks him to go home and rests because his mind is still unstable.
04:42Following this, the printer in the doctor's office prints a piece of paper by himself.
04:46On the paper, it says, what is your next move?
04:49Akira realizes that the game he started that morning is still going on.
04:52He jokes that he wants to move the pawn to position E3.
04:55Then the doctor opens the book and sees that all the sides have turned into a chess board.
04:59The printer prints another piece of paper that says that in the next move, the queen of the old man killed Akira's knight.
05:06It turns out that the knight is Dr. Tomoda.
05:09He regains his blood and dies at the same moment.
05:12Akira is shocked when he sees a picture of the doctor with his horse on the wall, which means that the doctor was his knight.
05:18The glass from which he drank a while ago also has a chess pattern, so Akira assumes that the drink was a drug.
05:24The nurse looks through the door, but does nothing to save the doctor.
05:27She comes in when the doctor dies and asks Akira what his next move is.
05:32Akira runs out and shivers with fear, and then runs into a child holding a drawing of the current format on a chess board.
05:39It is obvious that he is involved in the game when he asks Akira the same question.
05:43Akira replies that he wants to move the king to E2 position.
05:47The child tells him that the king will end up dead, which forces Akira to run in the other direction.
05:52He gets a vision of people who died because of the game, and begins to hallucinate chess figures trying to kill him.
05:58As he runs, he arrives at the parking lot where the cars are parked in the format as on the chess board.
06:03Unaware of this, he enters the car that was supposed to be a hunter and tries to turn it.
06:08However, the hunter in chess moves only diagonally.
06:11He leaves the car and enters the one marked as top.
06:15The car does not start because it is time for the opponent to play his move.
06:19The top of the opposite direction hits his car, killing Akira's top.
06:24Following this, Akira goes to his old house just to see if it is for sale.
06:29The top, known as the courtyard, is his house in real life.
06:33Now, when Akira begins to understand real life chess, he realizes that the queen of his wife is dead and that her life is also in danger.
06:40He goes to the house of the old man, claiming that he wants to stop playing and asking for the life of his wife.
06:45Anyway, the old man asks Akira to accept his defeat and moves the queen to the end of the board.
06:51This again reminds Akira of the time when he was ashamed after losing the match against Superblue.
06:56Determined, he continues to play the game and asks the old man to move his king forward.
07:01The game continues and lasts a long time and most of their figures are destroyed.
07:06In the end, Akira is only two steps away from victory and the old man can't do anything to save his king.
07:12Anyway, before he plays his move, two men take him apart.
07:17In the next scene, the old man and Akira are at the stadium, which is as big as in real life, with a chess board in the middle.
07:24Chess figures are people who will die with every wrong move.
07:28He says that their situation is similar to the Arab king who played chess with his prisoners, killing them on the spot.
07:34He emphasizes that chess is a game without emotions, because players sometimes have to sacrifice their own figures to win.
07:40For Akira, in order to win the game, he will have to move the horse for chess, but if he does that, the old man will kill his queen.
07:49Akira turns around and sees that the queen is actually his wife Kumi, who is tied up and threatened with a knife.
07:56With tears in her eyes, she shakes her head, asking Akira to save her.
08:00Now, Akira can either win the game or lose his wife forever.
08:05He tries to move out of his field to stop the man, but the sniper fires a bullet near his legs as a warning that he will be killed by movement.
08:13The old man asks him one last time if he will sacrifice the queen or accept defeat.
08:19He also says that the real champion would think logically and do what is necessary to win the game.
08:24But Akira tells him to save the queen without thinking.
08:28Everyone is shocked by his decision.
08:30He comes in front of her, extends his arms and accepts his defeat.
08:34The opponent's queen comes in front of him with a knife and stabs him.
08:38In the end, Akira falls to the floor.
08:40Anyway, after his death, the old man laughs while looking at the body of his man, obviously delighted with what had just happened.
08:48To further surprise, the man who died in the first round, Dr. Tomoda, the medical nurse and everyone else who Akira met during the game, arrive at the arena while he is being beaten.
08:57Then Akira gets up from the floor, confused why he does not feel any pain, and it turns out that the knife he was stabbed with was fake.
09:04Then it was discovered that the game was a trick to get Akira out of a depressive episode and force him to play chess again.
09:11He was in a worse mental state than when he lost the match against Super Blue.
09:15So to help him get better, Dr. Kumi and the old man thought of the whole game as part of shock therapy.
09:22The old man is actually the founder of Super Blue.
09:25He was not satisfied because his creation forced players like Akira to stop playing.
09:30So to make up for his mistakes, he organized and founded the game.
09:34During this time, Akira played against Super Blue, which is traced back to the old man through the headset.
09:40The man discovers that the computer could not pick up Akira's victim move and therefore broke, which means that he finally won the match against Super Blue.
09:48The film ends with Akira and his wife hugging, while everyone is dancing.
