00:00Holy moly, just have a look at this.
00:03It's the brand new Honor Magic V2.
00:06And in fact, it's one of just a handful
00:08of early pre-release devices in the world right now.
00:11So a big thank you to Honor
00:12for giving us early access to this
00:13and also partnering with me on this video.
00:15So this is not a review.
00:17It's also running pre-release software
00:18and there are limitations
00:19on what I can actually show you right now, but still.
00:22This is one of the most exciting foldables I've used ever.
00:27Really, mainly because I feel like it's the first time
00:30I can actually use this like a regular phone.
00:33It's lighter than an iPhone 14 Pro Max.
00:35It's roughly half the thickness of a Galaxy Fold 4
00:38and yet they squeezed in
00:39a whopping 5,000 million power battery in here,
00:42which I believe is the biggest battery in any folding phone.
00:46I mean, look at that.
00:47It's just 9.9 millimeters thick closed or 4.7 open.
00:52It also has the most subtle crease
00:54I think I've ever seen on a folding phone like this.
00:57And of course it folds completely flat.
01:00You can barely get your fingernail in there.
01:03We have a 90% screen to body ratio
01:05for both the tablet screen and the external cover screen.
01:07Five cameras in total
01:09with a triple camera setup on the back.
01:11So it does borrow some of the camera features
01:12from the flagship Magic 5 Pro in here,
01:14which we'll talk more about in a second.
01:16And the flagship specs continue on the inside
01:18because this is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2,
01:22but not just any Snapdragon 8 Gen 2.
01:24Qualcomm have decided to drop the naming conventions
01:27of an 8 Plus Gen 2,
01:28which we normally see during this midlife refresh.
01:31In fact, it is just still called an 8 Gen 2,
01:33but this is using that midlife refreshed updated version
01:36of the 8 Gen 2.
01:37I can't run any tests or benchmarks
01:38on this just at the moment,
01:40but I would presume it will be a little bit faster.
01:42And that's combined with 12 gigabytes of RAM
01:44and either 256, 512, or one terabyte of storage.
01:49It also boasts a new ultra thin bionic cooling system
01:52as they call it because traditional vapor chamber coolers
01:54are just too thick and too heavy
01:56for this kind of form factor.
01:57So hopefully that'll keep everything nice and cool
01:59even during longer gaming sessions.
02:02And both screens inside and out
02:03have a 120 Hertz refresh rate and LTPO panels.
02:07So it's a little bit more efficient for the battery.
02:08And also like this guy, the Honor 90,
02:10which I made a video on just last week,
02:12the V2 also comes equipped
02:14with a 3840 Hertz pulse width modulation or PWM dimming,
02:18which can help reduce eye strain,
02:20particularly at lower brightnesses.
02:22And you can see here,
02:23if I set my camera to a very high shutter speed
02:25next to say the latest iPhone,
02:27you can see the difference in flickering.
02:29And so that higher frequency on the Honor
02:31is better for your eyes.
02:32Both screens also support on a stylus pen
02:35so you can doodle and draw with much more precision,
02:37although I don't currently have a pen to test it.
02:39And we do also get HDR 10 plus and IMAX enhanced support.
02:43I think the most important thing for me at least
02:45is the fact that this is the first time
02:47I've used a foldable phone
02:48and it's felt as comfortable to use
02:50as a regular slate phone.
02:52I can also see how my ND filter
02:54is messing up the colors on the screen there.
02:57But it's true, the size, the weight, the thinness of it,
02:59and also crucially this aspect ratio,
03:02it's 20 by nine,
03:03which is basically the same as any other smartphone.
03:06So you absolutely could just use the external cover screen
03:09all day long if you wanted to.
03:11But then of course, can I do this one handed?
03:13Yes, I can.
03:14You can flip it open to reveal that tablet screen as well.
03:16So it's kind of finally like the best of both worlds,
03:20which is what foldables should be.
03:22I will admit it's kind of hard to show this
03:24without doing a full teardown on the device,
03:26which I think given there's only a handful of these
03:28right now on, I would probably prefer I didn't do,
03:30but they've drastically reduced the number of components
03:32used internally by 70%.
03:34So there's more room for this dual cell battery
03:36and also it's allowed them to make
03:37the whole thing even thinner.
03:38They've also used a combination of titanium
03:40and their proprietary steel for the hinge
03:43to make it both light and durable.
03:44And in fact, it's 150% stronger
03:47and 27% slimmer than last year's Magic VS.
03:50And even with that,
03:51they've had this SGS certified to 400,000 folds.
03:55Plus we also have a new second generation
03:57nanocrystal glass for the screens,
03:59which is 30% more drop resistant
04:01and also has an SGS five-star drop resistance rating.
04:06Also, listen to this.
04:08Wait for it.
04:10Isn't that really satisfying?
04:14Oh, it's lovely.
04:15It's lovely.
04:16But what I think Honor are most proud of
04:18is the battery in this.
04:19As I say, it's a 5,000 million power cell,
04:21which is huge compared to the competition.
04:23For example, the Galaxy Fold 4
04:25has a 4,400 million power cell.
04:27The Huawei Mate XS3, I believe is a 4,900,
04:31bigger than both of those, but it's not just about that.
04:34Honor are using a pioneering new battery technology,
04:37which uses a silicon carbon chemical structure
04:40for the battery,
04:40which we haven't really seen before in phones like this.
04:43They still use graphite as the base
04:45for its high conductivity and stability,
04:47but then they've created a composite with silicon,
04:50which has much higher capacities
04:51than traditional graphite anode batteries.
04:53I mean, for batteries,
04:54it's all about being as efficient and dense as possible
04:57because you've got such a small area to work with.
05:00So it's kind of like,
05:01I don't know, imagine you're stacking your phones like this.
05:03It's taking up quite a lot of room.
05:04Well, what if you brought in something with more layers?
05:08So you could actually put your phones in here like so,
05:11and then you could build all the way to the back.
05:14It's not an exact representation of what's happening,
05:16but it basically means you can fit a whole lot more in
05:18in a similar overall space, kind of.
05:23I should never be a science teacher.
05:24Now, obviously with pre-release hardware and software,
05:27I can't properly test the battery just yet,
05:29but on paper at least,
05:30this is shaping up to be one of the longest lasting
05:32foldables ever.
05:35And finally, the Honor Magic V2 ships with Android 13
05:38and also their latest Magic OS 7.2 software on top.
05:42But so far for me, even though this is pre-release software,
05:44it's all been running nice and smoothly.
05:46I do quite like Magic OS,
05:48but there is a problem with this phone
05:50and I've left it till last.
05:51And it's not the price because even though
05:53this is going to be quite expensive,
05:54I don't actually have the final pricing.
05:56I can tell you the current Honor Magic VS in the UK
05:59is around 1,400 pounds,
06:00which actually given the Pixel Fold and the Galaxy Fold
06:03is a pretty reasonable price for a fold like this
06:05with this kind of hardware.
06:06The main problem,
06:07and you can probably guess where I'm going with this,
06:09is it's not currently launching outside of China.
06:12This, on July 12th, will be launching in China.
06:15As for the rest of the world, we don't know yet.
06:17They haven't said no.
06:18It might come out at a later date,
06:20perhaps if the response and the feedback to this
06:22is really positive.
06:23They will also launch it elsewhere
06:24and they have with previous phones.
06:26So fingers crossed, I don't know what that was.
06:28That's not a cross finger, but right now at least,
06:30sadly, this won't be launching here in the UK
06:32or outside of China,
06:33which is a real bloody shame
06:35because I actually really want one.
