00:00:00It is caught! Touchdown!
00:00:04The New England Patriots select Drake May.
00:00:08He's got the ball! And that's the ballgame!
00:00:12I'm not gonna lie to you, that intro? Pretty inspiring. I'm ready to run through a wall. Let's go.
00:00:17Week 8. All 32 pod. Mike Ciardi, Will Parkinson alongside.
00:00:21A reminder, the show brought to you by PrizePix, the exclusive daily fantasy partner of the CLNS Media Network.
00:00:27In game time, best tickets, best prices to get you in to see any event you want to see.
00:00:31And there's of course a lot to see. Will and I use them both. We love it.
00:00:35Let's get right into it, Will, because worlds collide.
00:00:38Jets, Patriots for the second time this season.
00:00:41And both teams going in the wrong direction.
00:00:44Patriots, of course, have lost 6 in a row. They're now 1-6.
00:00:47And the Jets, they have dropped 4 in a row after that big win over the Patriots on that Thursday night.
00:00:52Which seems like an eternity ago.
00:00:54And are currently 2-5. Jets haven't swept the Patriots since 2000.
00:01:00And as I was sitting here getting ready for this pod, Will, some numbers came up to me about Aaron Rodgers' season.
00:01:07And statistically, it's been pointed out that maybe this is the worst season of his career, at least for this point.
00:01:15Averaging just 6.5 yards per attempt.
00:01:1810-7 touchdown to interception ratio. And an 82.2 passer rating.
00:01:23So I ask you, Will, we'll start right there.
00:01:25How much of what's happened to the Jets' offense is about the quarterback?
00:01:30Yeah, it's funny. When we left, we recorded, I guess, Friday morning after that Week 3 game.
00:01:38And the Jets were like, wow, they're going to win this division pretty easily.
00:01:42And the Patriots sucked. And then now we've kind of got that the both teams might suck.
00:01:50I would say, you know, you did the blame pie. The Mike and Mike WFAN original days of that and the win-loss-win-win-loss game.
00:01:59Aaron Rodgers shares some of the blame for sure.
00:02:03I think that his turnovers, it's been weird. It's not a normal, you know, look, guys throw interceptions all the time.
00:02:12Josh Adams, you know, is usually, except for this year, usually is, you know, mid-teens.
00:02:16And the Dacks and Trevor Lawrence, the guys that are like considered very good quarterbacks in this league, you know, obviously varying degrees.
00:02:22Mahomes, eight, I guess, eight turnovers or eight picks already this year.
00:02:26Every time Rodgers throws a pick, it feels like it's immediately seven points for their team.
00:02:30Like they've all been end of game or almost returned for touchdowns, which is so rare in Rodgers' career.
00:02:37So he's missing stuff over the middle. He's gotten a little antsy.
00:02:41I don't think he's the main problem, but I don't think he's been a big enough solution thus far.
00:02:46Tyron Smith has fallen off a cliff in the last four weeks out of nowhere.
00:02:50He got like really old out of nowhere. He's lunging and missing guys, getting beat with speed.
00:02:55I don't know what's going on there. Apparently he's back.
00:02:58He's, you know, we'll see. But the run blocking mixed with all the guys around him until I guess a week or two ago had kind of been really disappointing.
00:03:09Outside of Lazard, right? Like Brees Hall didn't look like Brees Hall. Garrett Wilson has not looked like Garrett Wilson overall.
00:03:15Then the run blocking has been poor. So all that combined with Nate Hackett for the first six weeks, Rodgers not being the ultimate savior,
00:03:25has mixed with an offense that leaves you. And we talked about this on Monday or Tuesday's episode.
00:03:31They're not a bad offense. There's a lot of talent and some of the play calls are not bad.
00:03:36Every single play, someone does something that screws the entire other 11.
00:03:41I know it's football's the ultimate team game, but like no team embodies that better than the 2024 Jets,
00:03:46where quite literally if a single guy makes a mistake, it like blows up in their face.
00:03:51Right, Garrett? Everything's perfect. The perfect encapsulation of the Jets season so far is that wheel route to Garrett Wilson.
00:03:57Perfectly blocked. Perfect throw. A player that you can count on. That's a budding superstar in this league.
00:04:03Has the ball hit him in the chest for no reason. And then it bounces 155 feet in the air.
00:04:09And it gets returned to the one yard line and the season crumbled or the game crumbled.
00:04:13So yeah, Rodgers, I think is to blame for sure. Maybe 30, 40 percent of it because the quarterback is a huge part of it.
00:04:20But I don't think he's been overall bad. He just has not been a top 10 guy consistently.
00:04:25And the Jets kind of were expecting him to be at least a top 15, if not top 10 guy.
00:04:31You mentioned the sort of the players not elevating.
00:04:35And we saw Brees Hall step up and look more like Brees Hall in that last game against the Steelers,
00:04:41despite it being a lopsided game. And I just go back to week three for as good as Rodgers was in that game.
00:04:46And Patriots inability to keep him inside the tackle box. He ran around, made some plays with his legs,
00:04:51extended plays and threw the ball down the field. Their ability to run started this trend against the Patriots,
00:04:58where everybody's getting well now everybody's getting 170, 180, 190 against the Patriots.
00:05:04But it's been five straight games starting with the Jets game. It's 120 plus on the ground for opposing teams.
00:05:10Can they get back to that? With the way the line looks and the way maybe they haven't necessarily been running the ball with force,
00:05:19can they get back to that against the Patriots, who again this week for the this would be now the sixth week in a row are insisting,
00:05:26look, it's a little thing here. It's a little thing there, but we're going to get it fixed.
00:05:31We've got to get it fixed. And this is when it starts this week against the Jets.
00:05:35Yeah, something that you just mentioned there that one big factor.
00:05:39And I think Rodgers play. I thought he was pretty good against Buffalo.
00:05:42All things considered, I thought Pittsburgh the second quarter was good, but overall, obviously not his best game.
00:05:47Pittsburgh and Minnesota and Denver, the three games were like, oh, he looks old. Minnesota game.
00:05:53He got pretty bagged up. I mean, I think we all you texted me and I got plenty of them.
00:06:00That might be it. You know, that might be a career for Rodgers.
00:06:03Now, what a shame, man. Like, you know, he's he was a week and a half removed from that Patriots game where he was prime Rodgers.
00:06:08I mean, he was moving around, making plays with his legs. He's got a tweaked hamstring.
00:06:13Again, something you expect for a guy who has not played. Right.
00:06:16Like, I'm not surprised by that. You know, the knee he got rolled up on and he plays through that.
00:06:20I don't think that's a problem. It's the low ankle sprain that I think is hampering him right now.
00:06:24And an ankle sprain for anybody is hard. But when you're a guy that's like trying to fully retrust your body again, it doesn't make it easy.
00:06:32And he just hasn't moved as much. Jeff Wilber talked about it.
00:06:36I mean, they desperately need they are two games here in four days.
00:06:40They really they do need to win both and they need to at least win one or maybe win three or four, if not four or four, which is doable.
00:06:47And but it's also until they they do it. No one's going to believe them. Right.
00:06:50Like it's show me. Don't tell me anymore. But Rodgers needs that mini buy in the actual bye week badly.
00:06:57I think he needs a reset. A lot of this Jets team does. They're pretty banged up.
00:07:00I think the injury report was like 17 guys yesterday. They didn't even they couldn't even practice.
00:07:04They literally did a walk through a full speed walk through because Jeff Albrecht's like we need to get reps and we need these guys to try to practice, which is actually really appreciate the honesty.
00:07:14He was just like our entire secondary and a majority of our defense is not healthy enough to do a full speed practice on a Tuesday.
00:07:23So, oh, OK, that's that's perfect. But at least you're being honest.
00:07:28But I think Rodgers desperately needs at least one of these injuries to heal because it's just it's limiting him movement wise.
00:07:34And then the offense like they're not a their scheme isn't so good that they just going to get guys open.
00:07:40So like Rodgers not being able to freelance is definitely hurt him the last two weeks. I feel like a little bit.
00:07:45I'm curious, you know, in the in the in the first meeting, Christian Gonzalez was basically traveling with Garrett Wilson.
00:07:53Now you add Devontae Adams to the mix. It didn't look awesome.
00:07:58Obviously, you know, he'd been there for all of about five days or whatever, six days before he to play his first game.
00:08:04Having gone back and watched it, what did you think of Adams's performance? And do you think like there's a lot of meat on that bone for this week?
00:08:12Yeah, there he was open a lot. I mean, I was actually I thought that the first play of the game encapsulated what that thing was going to look like,
00:08:21because Devontae hadn't played in three weeks as much as they have great chemistry.
00:08:25And I think they'll get the playbook wasn't a problem. And Rodgers hitting him wasn't a problem.
00:08:29But, you know, you still don't you're not used to the way guys move right away. You need a little bit more than four days.
00:08:35You play almost every single snap. The Rodgers worth the work to play the game that changed it.
00:08:39Rodgers had Devontae in the slot fade. Again, I thought encapsulating again that 11 guys and 10 do the right thing.
00:08:46Great play call. It was a third and four, I believe, around the 40 yard line.
00:08:51I want to say it's maybe it was a little closer. Maybe it's around the 30. Jets ran a form of mesh.
00:08:57Devontae is the late crosser. And it was I mean, Devontae could still be running amidst his whole speech.
00:09:03Like he'd be running right through his speech. The Jets probably wouldn't make even Aaron has.
00:09:07I mean, it's a 70 yard dump off, but Tyron Smith gets beat with speed by Alex Highsmith.
00:09:12And Rodgers rushed it. He didn't want to, you know, like any quarterback didn't want to get hit.
00:09:17He rushed his feet and he skipped it. And I remember going, oh, my God, Devontae has been open all night.
00:09:21I think it'll look much better. They asked Kay Adams asked Devontae on her show this week about Gonzalez.
00:09:27And he kind of was like, yeah, we'll see. I if I personally was the Patriots,
00:09:33I would make sure to take Garrett Wilson out of the game entirely, because as much as he struggled,
00:09:39he seems to be a third down guy for them. He seems to be a guy that when he's going, they're rolling.
00:09:46There's the dog. There we go. There we go. But no, I think I think personally that, you know, a guy like, you know,
00:09:54a guy like Gonzalez, if you take care of Wilson and you can bracket Devontae, that Belichick method of take out the number two with your best guy
00:10:01and then let your other two guys man up against your your one. That's probably what I would do if I was playing the Jets right now.
00:10:06Patriots have a size problem at corner, especially as it relates to this Jets team.
00:10:12And we saw it in the first one where you're cycling through guys trying to figure out how to cover Lazard and Mike Williams.
00:10:18And not that either guy had like these monster numbers. It was actually Ty Conklin who put in his in that game.
00:10:23Right. But that. John Jones at five, nine and five, eight or whatever he is, and Marcus Jones at five, eight, 180,
00:10:30like had a hard time taking him to the ground when they got the ball.
00:10:33And we saw they ended up going to Alex Austin, who hasn't really been dressing for the Patriots here for the last month or so
00:10:40to try to get a little bit more size on the field and deal with him that way.
00:10:45And so now you add Adams to the mix, who's not a small guy, not not a monster receiver, but not a small guy.
00:10:50And it's just like Gonzalez is their biggest corner.
00:10:53I'm not sure how they figure out either.
00:10:56The one thing with the I guess the counter to my argument would be Garrett's not been playing well.
00:11:01And, you know, and after Devontae made this whole rousing speech.
00:11:04And I'm curious your thoughts on it from just the outside point of view of a guy five days in the locker room
00:11:10coming in and basically saying this culture sucks.
00:11:13He wasn't wrong. That's for damn sure.
00:11:15But just curious on that. But if you put Gonzalez on Adams, do you say Rogers have to force it to Garrett,
00:11:22who's not playing with confidence right now? We think we can force an interception.
00:11:25Maybe that's the move, because, you know, Devontae is still, oh, 6'2", 210, 220.
00:11:29And like he's his foot. I mean, that's that's no joke of a matchup, although, you know,
00:11:35we look at Stefan Diggs, who's a smaller version of Devontae in a lot of ways, that runner.
00:11:39It's not going to burn you with speed. Gonzalez didn't have his best afternoon there.
00:11:42So I don't know. I'm not sure the plan, but if I'm if I'm the Patriots, if Rogers isn't healthy,
00:11:49I know they blitzed him a ton last, you know, last time and it bit them.
00:11:52But it's because Rogers moves really well. If he's not going to move well on Sunday afternoon,
00:11:56maybe you go to that method and just say, hopefully we force one or two.
00:12:00And he he gets restless because the Broncos Vikings game and specific.
00:12:05He struggled with pressure, which is something he's never really done in the past.
00:12:08But again, at the current state of his body, I'm not sure it's pressure.
00:12:13It's one of the things I had in my notes that if I'm the Patriots, just based on on how he's looked
00:12:18and physically what he's dealing with currently. You got to go after him.
00:12:23You just you know, and if he stands up to it and makes some plays off it,
00:12:26then you can sort of adjust on the fly.
00:12:28But I would think that that would be a big part of how you'd want to approach this game
00:12:32and how you want to approach that player in New England.
00:12:38As we taped this on a Thursday afternoon, the big story of the day, big old team meeting on Thursday morning.
00:12:45I mean, you're talking about Devante given the postgame speech.
00:12:49Well, the Patriots had that not only with the coach calling himself and then trying to walk it back.
00:12:53But John Jones has been on the team for nine years, as solid a dude as you want, a terrific professional.
00:13:00He felt the need after the game in London to air out some grievances in the locker room
00:13:06and give what was described as a fiery speech.
00:13:09And we talked to him today and he just said, I just felt like enough was enough.
00:13:13And that sort of is carried over into this week where there has been yet again a lot of noise.
00:13:19And this is what happens, Will, as you're seeing when you lose four in a row, there's a lot of chatter.
00:13:24The Patriots have lost six in a row and have been getting their butts kicked in pretty much that entire time.
00:13:30And you had Mayo having to deal with the fallout from the soft comments,
00:13:35players having to answer questions about their coach saying that about them.
00:13:39And then you had the social media posts from Jalen Polk, who's currently on concussion protocol.
00:13:45Probably it seems unlikely that he'll play.
00:13:47I guess we'll see Friday if he practices, but has not practiced this week.
00:13:51And then KJ Osborne.
00:13:52He might need a week to mentally reset.
00:13:54I think it's the, I thought last week was the week to do it.
00:13:57And then you have this and I think it is time.
00:13:59This is probably, I mean, you're not wishing a concussion on anybody,
00:14:02but if there's a chance to just catch your breath maybe and go sit over there and like just chill, this might be the week for it.
00:14:10But then you had KJ Osborne retweeting this business associate of his who was saying like,
00:14:14you're such a pro because they didn't tell you were dressing until 11 o'clock at night on Saturday night before this game.
00:14:20And you still went out there and caught a touchdown.
00:14:22And I know this isn't going great for you, bro.
00:14:24And hang in there.
00:14:25We'll do our best to get it, basically get you out of there.
00:14:28And so on Wednesday, Chris Mason, a reporter for MassLive and yours truly, went up to KJ at his locker.
00:14:35And second question Chris asked was, do you want to be traded?
00:14:38And he said, laughing, that's like an alley oop, laughing some more.
00:14:43Chris kind of looked at me like, did he just, he said that?
00:14:46Yeah, he said that.
00:14:47And I gave him a chance a couple of questions later and said like, you didn't say yes, you want to be traded, but you didn't say no.
00:14:53And it certainly seemed more, way more yes than no.
00:14:56And he didn't, he's like, I'm here now.
00:15:00I'll rock with it now.
00:15:01But he clearly would like a change of scenery.
00:15:04So you have that.
00:15:05And then they have this team meeting where the gist of it is, again, mostly focused on the wide receiver room.
00:15:12And there are some young players that are just, whether it's immaturity, lack of professionalism, which you want to combine those two, because sometimes one does go with the other.
00:15:24The message was like, you guys got to stop worrying about your stats and your targets and worry about putting in the work, taking care of your body, studying your playbook, getting your rehab, doing all the things that you need to do to be a pro so that when you get to the game on Sunday, you're at your physical and mental best.
00:15:42And that has been a problem.
00:15:43It has continued to deteriorate.
00:15:46And the fact of the matter is, I wrote about this today in the Boston Sports Journal is, and this isn't a first guess.
00:15:54We've talked about this for months and months with the way they built the team.
00:15:57But when you add the injuries on top of some of the stuff that's happened, there was such a leadership void on this football team that you have someone like John Jones, who is a leader, but by action, having to speak up because he's seeing things that he doesn't like.
00:16:13And Kendrick Bourne, who obviously was rehabbing the knee, couldn't have the same sort of influence over the first four or five weeks of the season until he got back on the field with these guys.
00:16:22And now you're, OK, now I'm seeing what's happening.
00:16:25I'm over in London, and I'm seeing what's happening, and I don't like what's happening.
00:16:29And now he's trying to, like, guys, we've got to get this together, because if you keep putting in minimal effort and the other team is doing everything they can to win the game and you're not, then guess what?
00:16:41You get exactly what we've got, which is six losses in a row.
00:16:44So this is another sort of, they've had multiple quote-unquote come-to-Jesus moments this season, and none of them have worked so far.
00:16:53And this seems like it's down the playbook, you know, like, oh, well, it's not going well, struggling team.
00:16:57Let's have the team meeting, and hopefully that turns it.
00:17:00But it's, you know, you've dealt with this with the Jets, too.
00:17:04It's just like when you're having these conversations and you're like, I don't know.
00:17:09These things generally don't work.
00:17:12Yeah, no, this is a matchup where, this is obviously the Patriots' season again for the 800th time.
00:17:19They're not going to be a playoff team, but you'd like to see some improvement.
00:17:22You'd like to see them not get blown off the field.
00:17:24At home, division, rival, you'd like to see them keep it close, even if they lose the way they lost to Miami.
00:17:28Yeah, disgusting game or not, like, at least play a division rival close, comes down to the end.
00:17:32If, you know, they beat you, they beat you.
00:17:34The Jets have all the pressure in the world now.
00:17:36I mean, they cannot lose this game this season.
00:17:38Well, you want to talk about cratering and stuff going out of control.
00:17:42Look, I think both teams are kind of looking for answers in different ways.
00:17:47I didn't, you know, team meetings to me are usually the last chance.
00:17:52Can something spark here?
00:17:54They don't, they work sometimes, they don't on others.
00:17:57I think the fact that we're having a conversation about Gerard Mayo and, you know, the purse sources,
00:18:01I don't know what that was or what that wasn't.
00:18:04The fact that I'm, you know, NBC and, you know, every sports channel in Boston,
00:18:08they're having a conversation, is Gerard Mayo going to make it through the year already?
00:18:11And we're in, we haven't even gotten to Halloween.
00:18:13It's pretty, it's pretty brutal.
00:18:15And on the Jets side, like, again, it's a team that the talents there, you know,
00:18:21the coaching staff on offense is not great.
00:18:23We know that, but, you know, this team should be a lot better.
00:18:27And the fact that Devontae Adams after four days was like, this is horrible.
00:18:32And they got to, we got, I got to fix this now.
00:18:34Because if I don't say something like we might crater, seem to be received well.
00:18:39I don't necessarily have a problem with it personally.
00:18:42I know he hasn't been there that long.
00:18:43And, you know, a lot of the talk was all how the veterans in the room going to feel.
00:18:46I don't know, man, Devontae is, you know, a four or five time all pro.
00:18:49And he's seen there done that.
00:18:52Like he's been a part of a winning culture in Green Bay.
00:18:55And I just, yeah, I don't think CJ Mosley and Quinn Williams are going to be offended by it.
00:18:58You know, like I don't, I don't see it as that.
00:19:00I see it as guys like the Garrett Wilsons, the Sauce Gardeners, the, you know,
00:19:05even an Alan Lazard or a, you know, an Elijah Vera Tucker,
00:19:08whoever it may be guys that come from winning programs or played with these guys in the past.
00:19:12But maybe kind of got a little lazy or a little bit laissez-faire.
00:19:15And, oh, it's just going to happen for us.
00:19:17The Jets biggest issue right now is overcoming.
00:19:20Everyone told them last year, including probably myself, they just needed the quarterback.
00:19:25Everything else would be fine.
00:19:26They just need the quarterback.
00:19:27And that's not true.
00:19:28They were still a seven win team.
00:19:29They maybe would have been a nine or 10 win team.
00:19:31They were not a 12 or 13 win team.
00:19:32They added a lot.
00:19:33But I guess the last point here is like, I think they finally realized that like, yeah,
00:19:37Aaron's going to be better the rest of the year.
00:19:39Like he's not going to play as badly as he's played.
00:19:41But who knows if he'll get back to the level that everyone's hoping.
00:19:44These other guys got to step up, right?
00:19:46Like this is not going to be the Aaron show.
00:19:48This is going to be, he's an integral piece, but it's going to start Sunday for them.
00:19:53And again, if they struggle on Sunday, you're going to start to see a very loud and mouthy locker room.
00:20:02You know, as well as I do, that if the Jets lose to this Patriot team,
00:20:08the way this Patriot team is playing after all the stuff that's come out on the Patriots just last four days,
00:20:14it is going to be an absolute free-for-all in terms of the way they're going to get treated by the media.
00:20:22And that aggressive sector of the fan base is going to lose their minds.
00:20:27People need to be fired, traded, retired.
00:20:30That's what's going to happen.
00:20:31It's interesting because here in New England, we used to be, Boston used to be like,
00:20:36you don't want to play at Boston.
00:20:37The writers are terrible.
00:20:38Fans are terrible.
00:20:39You know, like it's never good enough.
00:20:42It's kind of become a pussycat sort of, like there's a lot of people that cover the Patriots that just want to say they cover the Patriots.
00:20:49There's a lot of people that cover the Patriots that are fans.
00:20:52And you can be a fan of football, but when you're covering the team,
00:20:58you need to be objective about the team that you're covering and what's good and what's bad.
00:21:02And don't hide the bad because you just want to talk about the good.
00:21:06Because you think that wide receiver is going to hang out with you.
00:21:09I got news for you, people on the beat.
00:21:12They're not hanging out with us.
00:21:13That's not how it works, okay?
00:21:17When they're going to go out at night, they ain't going to call you and tell you, hey, come on.
00:21:21We're going to go to such and such.
00:21:23It's because you don't drink your tequila like I do.
00:21:26I like my tequila.
00:21:29That's the truth.
00:21:30It's the truth.
00:21:31I think, quite frankly, for all the noise that's come out of New England,
00:21:36I think they've actually gotten off pretty easy.
00:21:39I think if this was 10 years ago, 12 years ago, this would be on the back page of everything.
00:21:46I mean, it's leading some sports radio.
00:21:48But, like, the Celtics, no one would care.
00:21:51I think part of it's Mayo, in my opinion.
00:21:53Yeah, I think he has relationships with people.
00:21:57And he doesn't treat everybody like crap.
00:22:01And I think that's the one thing with Bill.
00:22:05He's not blowing snot at us.
00:22:07Look at the way Salah was treated getting fired.
00:22:10I've never seen a coach get defended like that for having won 20 of 56 games.
00:22:14But he treated the media really well.
00:22:16And people were going to have his back.
00:22:17And I think people were happy to dunk on Bill as soon as he started to go wrong
00:22:22because there was 20 years of him telling you, you're not believed.
00:22:25You know, I'm Bill Belichick.
00:22:27So, yeah, this is one of those games on Sunday.
00:22:31You know, it's not a fun slate.
00:22:33We've had a couple weeks in a row where it's been like me and you have been like,
00:22:36how do we trim this down to five or six games?
00:22:38This is the opposite.
00:22:39It's like, how do we find five games that are even relevant?
00:22:41And this one is relevant because if the Jets can win this game,
00:22:45they start to become a little bit more relevant again.
00:22:47If Drake May goes out there and gets his first win, that's relevant.
00:22:50Some of these rookie quarterbacks have had really nice starts to their career.
00:22:53And Drake May's numbers are good, but has obviously played one difficult game,
00:22:58one easy game that was unfortunate.
00:23:01Again, I'd really like to see if I'm a Patriots fan, can you be competitive Sunday
00:23:05and then can you go win against Tennessee?
00:23:07If you can do that, now you're starting to, oh, let's work with something here.
00:23:10If you're the Jets, you say, you know, it's a bad mentality to have
00:23:15because it's not going to be this way likely.
00:23:18But I'd be like, hey, we should have won the first game 48 to three.
00:23:24We need to go out there and literally lay down a marker
00:23:26and build some confidence here because they got Houston coming in in four days.
00:23:30Houston's beat up and their offensive line and Shroud's not playing well
00:23:33in the whole thing, and that's all great.
00:23:35But they're 2-5 right now, and they're a team that probably has to go
00:23:38at minimum 8-3 the rest of the way.
00:23:447-3, 8-2, the rest of the way to make the playoffs.
00:23:48Their favorite at 9 of the 10 games and the whole thing, go do it
00:23:51because the fan base is over.
00:23:53It's a lot of show me, don't tell me.
00:23:54I think that's the same for the Patriots.
00:23:55Stop telling me that you're not soft and all that stuff.
00:23:58Go not give up 150 yards rushing.
00:24:00Yeah, exactly.
00:24:02You know what?
00:24:03It's like, again, I think if you went into the season,
00:24:05you knew they weren't going to win a lot of football games
00:24:07if you were being honest with yourself just based on the roster.
00:24:09It's a whole new coaching staff, inexperienced coaching staff,
00:24:12first-year head coach, first-year defensive coordinator,
00:24:14a guy calling plays for the first time since 2009.
00:24:17But to get beat by double digits and just to be getting stomped like this
00:24:21is problematic.
00:24:23I do want to just quickly – Drake May, first quarterback since 1950
00:24:30with 500-plus yards passing, five or more touchdown passes,
00:24:35and 50 or more rushing yards in his first two starts.
00:24:39So, whatever.
00:24:41It's easier to throw the ball in the league than it used to be
00:24:43and all that stuff.
00:24:44But cool.
00:24:45First guy since 1950 to do that,
00:24:47and his processing was pretty good the other day.
00:24:50His footwork's getting better.
00:24:52You saw a lot of the ex-quarterbacks, Orlovsky and Chase Daniel,
00:24:55kind of highlighting some of the improvement that they've seen there.
00:24:58He has been the breath of fresh air in what has been a very stale
00:25:03and stinky season for the New England Patriots.
00:25:08Let's hear from one of our sponsors, of course, the great prize picks,
00:25:11and we're going to give you our picks to end the program, Will.
00:25:15So, think about what you want here.
00:25:17I've got mine in front of me.
00:25:19Look, this is the fantasy app that you've got to use.
00:25:22Just download it.
00:25:23It's incredible.
00:25:25Pick between two and six players.
00:25:26You can win up to 100 times your money.
00:25:28Just download the app today.
00:25:29Use the code CLNS and get $50 instantly after you play your first $5 lineup.
00:25:34Again, download the app, code CLNS,
00:25:37and you get $50 after you play just $5.
00:25:40You don't even have to win the $5.
00:25:41You're getting $50.
00:25:42It's like free money.
00:25:43Who doesn't like free money?
00:25:44And then if you're good at this, you jump into it.
00:25:47For instance, riding the wave of the Brock Purdy, more rushing yards.
00:25:52He's always around eight, nine rushing yards.
00:25:54But, boy, he seems to get outside the tackle box once or twice a game,
00:25:57and the next thing you know, ah, he's rushed for 15 yards.
00:26:00So, you kind of look for the little spots there where you can be higher.
00:26:03You guys, if you thought, for instance,
00:26:05Devontae Adams is going to go nuts in this game because Rogers,
00:26:08he made the statement, and now we're going to do it.
00:26:10You pick more yards.
00:26:11You pick more receptions, and there you go.
00:26:14So, again, just download the app, prize picks, run your game.
00:26:18That's what they do.
00:26:19That's what you want to do.
00:26:20Let's move on to our non-backyard game.
00:26:23The 3-4 Bengals hosting the 4-2 Eagles.
00:26:28That's the first meeting ever between Joe Burrow and Jalen Hurts.
00:26:31Both came in the league in 2020,
00:26:33the first time they will play against each other.
00:26:35I want to start with the Eagles because they're,
00:26:38we've talked about this all year, a schizophrenic team.
00:26:41One week, it looks like, okay, this team's dangerous.
00:26:43They're going to be, they'll be a tough out.
00:26:45And then the next week, what the hell just happened?
00:26:48We talked about Sirianni coming unglued two weeks ago and yelling at people
00:26:53behind the bench and bringing his kids up as a human shield
00:26:56in the press conference.
00:26:57Like, just really foolish, immature stuff.
00:26:59He apologized for it, but whatever.
00:27:01It's a repeated behavior.
00:27:03So I kind of take the apology with a grain of salt, whatever.
00:27:07But this is a, I think this is a big game for the Eagles.
00:27:12And I understand the Bengals at 3-4,
00:27:15they need as many wins as possible after getting off the start.
00:27:17But the Eagles need to start establishing that consistency,
00:27:21which they haven't been able to do.
00:27:23And I think, to me, there's two things here with the Eagles.
00:27:27One, when their defensive line is getting after it,
00:27:31and they got after Daniel Jones.
00:27:32And again, I get the giant offensive lines, the dumpster fire.
00:27:35But like, Daniel Jones was under siege from the first play of the game on.
00:27:39And, you know, he ends up getting replaced.
00:27:41And say what you want about Daniel Jones, but like, it was relentless.
00:27:44They were in the backfield constantly.
00:27:46He's, you know, he's hitting the fifth step on his drop,
00:27:48and it's all, I got to get the hell out of here already.
00:27:50You know, there's already traffic at my feet
00:27:52or something coming from the edge.
00:27:54And when that group plays like that, the secondary,
00:27:58which is working in some young players and good young players,
00:28:01but again, just there's some youth.
00:28:03And then you have a guy like Gary Slay is a little older.
00:28:05You're still trying to figure that whole process out.
00:28:07It just makes life so much easier for them.
00:28:09So when those guys are attacking like that
00:28:12and creating that kind of pressure,
00:28:14it's so difficult for opposing offenses.
00:28:16And we can say what you want about Burrow and how cool he is,
00:28:19but they've got offensive line issues.
00:28:21Orlando Brown's been hurt.
00:28:22Trent Brown's done for the year.
00:28:23Marius Mims, their first rounder, is having to play.
00:28:26And he's actually done a good job, a solid job,
00:28:28but it's not outstanding.
00:28:30He's going to get tested.
00:28:31And if they can't hold up, then Burrow can't distribute
00:28:34to Jamar Chase and T. Jiggins, who currently are going,
00:28:37both of them are going nuts right now.
00:28:39So that to me is start one.
00:28:42Like if I'm looking at this game, I'm looking,
00:28:44can Zach Taylor and that offense and that offensive line
00:28:47in particular figure out a way to slow down that pass rush
00:28:50or neutralize that pass rush?
00:28:52Because if they don't, then it's going to be hard for Joe
00:28:55to do what he's been doing the last three, four weeks.
00:28:57Yeah, I'm on the same page as you.
00:28:59It's a big game for Philly
00:29:00and kind of establishing some consistency here.
00:29:02I think it's a big game for Cincinnati
00:29:04to kind of show me something.
00:29:08When a game you're not supposed to, technically you're not supposed to.
00:29:11Yeah, they've started to, you know,
00:29:13look, they've started to stack wins, right?
00:29:16Kind of a seven point win against Cleveland with DTR and Watson.
00:29:21Doesn't really move you.
00:29:23You know, could be argued they should have lost that Giants game, right?
00:29:25The Giants played better than them.
00:29:26I feel like on both sides of the football, you just, you know,
00:29:29Daniel Jones is allergic to scoring touchdowns.
00:29:31That's a whole nother problem.
00:29:32You know, and then they beat, what, they beat Carolina
00:29:34and those wins don't move you, right?
00:29:37Those are probably three of the five worst teams in the NFL
00:29:40or three of the seven worst teams, whatever.
00:29:42It doesn't matter.
00:29:43I don't think Philly's great, but I still think this is, you know,
00:29:46this is stiff competition.
00:29:47And again, it's at a conference, so does it kill you tiebreaker-wise?
00:29:50No, but like, you know, you lose this one, now you're three and five.
00:29:54You still got Baltimore again.
00:29:56You still got Pittsburgh twice.
00:29:57You still got, you know, Cleveland again.
00:29:59And who knows what Cleveland will be down the road.
00:30:00Maybe they get hot here with, you know,
00:30:02maybe they get a little bit more competitive with a different quarterback
00:30:04and the cancer kind of out of the building.
00:30:06And cancer, really, it's more of just like a, just a negative energy.
00:30:11You know, and it's a, yeah.
00:30:13So, like, I don't know.
00:30:14I think to me, yeah, I just, I want to see if Cincinnati's like,
00:30:21are they as good as we all expected them to be
00:30:23or are they kind of just going to be a team every week where it's like,
00:30:26hey, you know, if the offense gets hot, they'll win some games.
00:30:29And if not, and then from the Eagles side of things,
00:30:31like it feels like now with A.J. back,
00:30:34Saquon, Roland, Hurts is playing a little bit better.
00:30:36They're still getting, you know, they're getting their guys killed,
00:30:39you know, back there in Hurts.
00:30:40But Cincinnati's defense isn't great.
00:30:43I think this is a big run the football game.
00:30:45Try to wear down this defense a little bit and, you know,
00:30:49take your shots with, you know,
00:30:50with A.J. and those guys over the top when you have an opportunity,
00:30:53get back to kind of that Eagles brand of football.
00:30:55So, if I'm an Eagles fan, I'm going to this game saying like,
00:30:58we can put up points on this defense.
00:31:00I just, this pass rush, as you mentioned, is the key to this game.
00:31:03And I think it's the key to the rest of the season for the Eagles
00:31:05because early on, they all look terrible.
00:31:08Carter and, you know, Bryce Huff and Josh Schwed and, you know,
00:31:12Graham and all these guys.
00:31:13It's like, really?
00:31:14Like every one of these guys.
00:31:15Yeah, like this,
00:31:18this is one of the five most talented groups on paper in the league.
00:31:22And then last week I felt like you finally were like, oh.
00:31:25And again, it's the Giants, so we'll see.
00:31:27But damn impressive.
00:31:29And Bryce Huff's now got a sack in back-to-back games.
00:31:32Nolan Smith's starting to have some moments.
00:31:34You know, we've seen Josh Schwed have his moments in the league.
00:31:37And like Jalen Carter's.
00:31:38So now it's like, hey man, if Bryce Huff starts to get cooking,
00:31:41okay, that's your $15 million, $20 million edge rusher
00:31:43you were hoping to come in and replace Son Redick.
00:31:46Like that starts rolling.
00:31:48The young guys get more and more reps.
00:31:50Sirianni, just stay out of the way.
00:31:52Just please, just do nothing.
00:31:54Literally sit on the sideline and do nothing.
00:31:56And the Eagles will be okay.
00:31:57So yeah, this is one of those interesting,
00:32:01it'll be an interesting game in my opinion, for sure.
00:32:03Yeah.
00:32:04One other thing from the Eagles perspective,
00:32:09there's still something about the offense, right?
00:32:11And look, I said it.
00:32:12I think I've said it on this pod before.
00:32:14I was convinced after two years ago,
00:32:16after he went toe-to-toe with Mahomes in the Super Bowl,
00:32:18that Jalen Hurts was going to be a top five, top six quarterback.
00:32:21Loved his poise, his decision-making, everything.
00:32:24It just seemed like it just came together for the guy.
00:32:26Really talented dude.
00:32:27He figured it out.
00:32:28And then last year happened.
00:32:30And there was a disconnect between him and the team.
00:32:33You know, they go through two coordinators.
00:32:34Now they're on another coordinator.
00:32:36And I just don't think he sees it that great.
00:32:40And I think that in some ways,
00:32:42they've had to simplify their passing offense because of it.
00:32:46And it's constantly now just sort of hunting, where's A.J.?
00:32:50If A.J. has a one-on-one, that's where I'm going.
00:32:53And it's almost as if, Devontae Smith is so good,
00:32:58I feel like sometimes he's underutilized
00:33:00because it's just not the way that Hurts plays.
00:33:04You know, like, unless they're telling him.
00:33:06He feels very one-read-ish still.
00:33:09Yes, yes.
00:33:10And it's, I did not, I did not.
00:33:12Look, that was a knock on him coming out.
00:33:15And he convinced me otherwise in that year.
00:33:17And I guess I got swept up in the hype because.
00:33:19I'll be honest, I was being a hater during that year for sure.
00:33:22And I feel somewhat vindicated just because I felt like.
00:33:25Yes, you should.
00:33:26I feel like a lot of, and it sounds terrible,
00:33:28but a lot of Jalen's career has kind of been like,
00:33:30he's almost there.
00:33:31He's almost that guy.
00:33:32Like he's just always close and it doesn't,
00:33:34someone else is better or he gets passed up.
00:33:36And like, it's not, I shouldn't be a dick,
00:33:38but just, I mean, his college career was very much similar.
00:33:41Sneaky thing about him too.
00:33:43You know, he ran it so well two years ago.
00:33:46He doesn't run it like that anymore.
00:33:47I know he had rushing touchdowns this last game,
00:33:50but I'm talking about from a sheer speed standpoint.
00:33:54He used to get around the edge.
00:33:56Now it's like, he can't get there.
00:33:58Yeah.
00:33:59Like Lamar, if you notice, like, obviously these guys,
00:34:02first of all, after you get paid,
00:34:03you're going to try to take less hits no matter what.
00:34:05Yeah.
00:34:06But like Lamar's 10% less,
00:34:08the way he runs is very different than the way he ran three,
00:34:10four years ago, for sure.
00:34:12But he's still so effective and like his,
00:34:15he's developed so much as a passer and you're still just so scared of him
00:34:18beating into his legs.
00:34:19He's not going to beat you really for 75.
00:34:21I don't feel like anymore,
00:34:22but like he's going to cut you deep for 23 or four times.
00:34:25And you're like, that's almost worse.
00:34:27Jalen used to be like,
00:34:28you can't play man coverage against them because he's just going to leak
00:34:31out of the pocket.
00:34:32And that now I feel like you have to put some,
00:34:34because he's going to just keep taking hits and throwing interception.
00:34:36Like it's not that he's a bad quarterback.
00:34:38I just think he's kind of comfortably settled into like Baker,
00:34:41that classic Baker and Kirk and those guys where it's like any given week,
00:34:45they can lose you a football game.
00:34:47They can also win you one and then get hot and they're still good.
00:34:49They're worth paying, but I don't know.
00:34:53I don't know.
00:34:54Like I just look at,
00:34:55look at some of the games this year with Kirk or even like a Baker,
00:34:57you know,
00:34:58last week against Lamar,
00:34:59it's like the turnovers and stuff.
00:35:01I don't know what Jalen,
00:35:02like I watched him in person last year for the first time in my career.
00:35:05And it was probably one of his worst games.
00:35:07So like granted, but I just,
00:35:10I feel like the processing's not fast and then he's not using his legs as
00:35:14much anymore.
00:35:15So like, yeah,
00:35:16he's hard to break down,
00:35:17but it feels like it's easier and easier to get pressure on him than it was
00:35:21three years ago.
00:35:22And he's not an old guy by any means.
00:35:23He hasn't had this massive injury.
00:35:25It's just been,
00:35:26maybe it's like,
00:35:27you know,
00:35:28accumulation of a lot of hits you take in college and stuff.
00:35:30Is it more of a mobile quarterback?
00:35:31I don't know.
00:35:32He's again,
00:35:33he's good,
00:35:34but I don't look at him anymore in that class.
00:35:36I look at him more,
00:35:37like I said,
00:35:38in that,
00:35:39I don't know,
00:35:4012 to 16 range where it's like,
00:35:41good.
00:35:42They're a franchise guy,
00:35:43but they're not elite,
00:35:44which is,
00:35:45which is a kind of a tough spot to live.
00:35:46All right,
00:35:47let's move on to an interesting one.
00:35:49Bill's five and to visit the first place in the NFC West,
00:35:53the first place Seattle Seahawks,
00:35:55who are four and three.
00:35:56You mentioned it at the very beginning.
00:35:59You just kind of slipped it.
00:36:00Josh Allen has not thrown an interception this year,
00:36:03which is insane.
00:36:04Nice little quick chemistry build of the Mari Cooper catches the touchdown
00:36:10pass in his first game.
00:36:11Those two one would assume will be even better this week against Seattle.
00:36:18I think that when we talked about it,
00:36:20when we talked about the trade,
00:36:21Cooper's presence,
00:36:23it's a baseball term.
00:36:25It lengthened the lineup right now.
00:36:27A Coleman or Shakir doesn't have to try to be a one.
00:36:30They're not.
00:36:31And maybe Coleman will be one day,
00:36:32but he's not certainly now as a rookie.
00:36:34And now all of a sudden you have this depth amongst your pass catching group
00:36:38where you have Shakir,
00:36:40who obviously has built great trust with Josh over the last couple of seasons
00:36:43and is a really nice player.
00:36:45Nice player,
00:36:46not a great player,
00:36:47but a nice player.
00:36:48Coleman's had his moments already this season.
00:36:50Then you had Cooper to the mix.
00:36:52And then Dalton Kincaid was a terrific pass catching tight end,
00:36:55you know,
00:36:56and Dawson Knox,
00:36:57who had been limited in his use in terms of passing game.
00:36:59And all of a sudden you have these five or six guys that you're looking at
00:37:02saying,
00:37:03okay,
00:37:04if he's on the field and he's playing at the level that he's capable of,
00:37:08which he's played,
00:37:09he played at last year,
00:37:10this year wasn't great in Cleveland,
00:37:12but last year he was that guy.
00:37:14Yeah.
00:37:15I think that it creates a tension that opens up opportunities for these
00:37:18other players.
00:37:19And you saw it last week,
00:37:20right?
00:37:21I mean,
00:37:22it took them a little while to get going against Tennessee,
00:37:24but when they did,
00:37:25everything opened up for Josh and it was get to the fifth step in the drop,
00:37:28little hitch,
00:37:29boom balls out.
00:37:30Like,
00:37:31and that's not usually having watched Josh as much as I have over the last
00:37:35five,
00:37:36six years.
00:37:37That's not usually how it goes.
00:37:38It hasn't gone that way with that offense at times,
00:37:40you know,
00:37:41it's sort of get there.
00:37:42No one's open,
00:37:43run around,
00:37:44create break,
00:37:45tackles,
00:37:46make plays,
00:37:47that sort of thing.
00:37:48This was different.
00:37:49And not that Josh isn't going to do all that stuff that I was talking
00:37:51about,
00:37:52but like,
00:37:53it just,
00:37:54it goes to show you,
00:37:55they tried it a certain way,
00:37:56realized it wasn't good enough.
00:37:57And if Cooper can be even that sort of presence there on the outside,
00:38:01it makes things so much better for that offense.
00:38:03Yeah.
00:38:04I'm just curious,
00:38:05kind of both these teams,
00:38:06I feel like have been pretty,
00:38:08you know,
00:38:09pretty damn week to week.
00:38:10And Buffalo for three weeks,
00:38:12unstoppable.
00:38:13Yep.
00:38:14They had smoked two weeks in a row.
00:38:15Again,
00:38:16I guess they didn't technically get smoked against Houston,
00:38:17but I feel like they were nowhere near,
00:38:19you know,
00:38:20the Buffalo we kind of expect Baltimore,
00:38:22obviously ran them off the field.
00:38:24They were okay against the jets.
00:38:25I thought they did some nice things,
00:38:26especially they were really efficient in the red zone.
00:38:28The run game was really good.
00:38:30They,
00:38:31you know,
00:38:32but I don't think they were like,
00:38:33great.
00:38:34I thought that was a really close football game.
00:38:35And then they obviously blow Tennessee off the field after starting
00:38:37slow a little bit.
00:38:39Seattle kind of feels like they're more similar to the jets than they are.
00:38:43Maybe the Baltimore is the world and maybe even Houston.
00:38:45I'm just kind of curious what,
00:38:47you know,
00:38:48week to week is Buffalo going to continue to build on this?
00:38:50They're a team that generally speaking,
00:38:52if you get up on early,
00:38:53you can force Josh and there's some mistakes you can beat them.
00:38:56You know,
00:38:57they're,
00:38:58they're quite light,
00:38:59you know,
00:39:00through the spine of this defense,
00:39:01but then obviously when the bills get up early,
00:39:02they can,
00:39:03they can,
00:39:04they can go,
00:39:05you know,
00:39:06they are very,
00:39:07they're a very good defensive team.
00:39:08I mean,
00:39:09I don't mean like the Golden,
00:39:10the Golden state where I don't mean it like from actually from a town
00:39:12perspective,
00:39:13but very much like those warriors teams,
00:39:14you know,
00:39:15when they started,
00:39:16they started hitting shots.
00:39:17It's like they just get,
00:39:18they catch fire.
00:39:19We've seen the bills do it in years past and the playoffs and.
00:39:21Where they don't punt for a week and a half and,
00:39:23you know,
00:39:24in a row and things like that.
00:39:25So.
00:39:26Got us just curious what Mike McDaniel.
00:39:27You know,
00:39:28Mike McDonald,
00:39:29I apologize,
00:39:30you know you know,
00:39:31kind of schemes up when you know,
00:39:32with this,
00:39:33with this group and.
00:39:34You know,
00:39:35obviously a defensive mastermind,
00:39:36you know,
00:39:37the defense hasn't been great.
00:39:38And they've,
00:39:39they've done things like loose to the giants at home where the giants
00:39:41were pretty clear that our team and.
00:39:43You know,
00:39:44they didn't look,
00:39:45they beat Miami,
00:39:46but that they look great.
00:39:47You know,
00:39:48it's Tim Boyle and stuff like that.
00:39:49So like,
00:39:50but then they've had other games where they've looked really good.
00:39:51And Gino's been really good and the weapons look good and the,
00:39:54and the whole thing.
00:39:55So.
00:39:56This is one of those games for both teams.
00:39:58I don't feel like it's a,
00:39:59it's not a gotta have a game,
00:40:00which is why it's like a little disappointing.
00:40:02You know,
00:40:03you wish,
00:40:04you know,
00:40:05they had to have it,
00:40:06or the jets or the dolphins or Patriots were in a better spot where
00:40:08Buffalo couldn't,
00:40:09they could afford to just.
00:40:10Yeah.
00:40:11It's a non-conference game.
00:40:12They lose,
00:40:13they lose.
00:40:14But again,
00:40:15I do think this is a little bit of a statement of like,
00:40:17Hey,
00:40:18Seattle could build a game and a half lead in this division or a
00:40:20game and a half lead already.
00:40:22Cause they didn't obviously beat San Francisco,
00:40:24but Buffalo like,
00:40:26Hey man,
00:40:27new England upsets the jets and Miami loses this week.
00:40:29And you might be up,
00:40:31you know,
00:40:33I don't know.
00:40:34I don't know.
00:40:35I don't know.
00:40:36I don't know.
00:40:37I don't know.
00:40:38I don't know.
00:40:39I don't know.
00:40:40I don't know.
00:40:41I don't know.
00:40:42I don't know.
00:40:43I don't know.
00:40:44I don't know.
00:40:45I don't know.
00:40:46I don't know.
00:40:47I don't know.
00:40:48I don't know.
00:40:49I don't know.
00:40:50I don't know.
00:40:51I don't know.
00:40:52I don't know.
00:40:53I don't know.
00:40:54I don't know.
00:40:55I don't know.
00:40:56I don't know.
00:40:57I don't know.
00:40:58I don't know.
00:40:59I don't know.
00:41:00I don't know.
00:41:01I don't know.
00:41:02I don't know.
00:41:03I don't know.
00:41:04I don't know.
00:41:05I don't know.
00:41:06I don't know.
00:41:07I don't know.
00:41:08I don't know.
00:41:09I don't know.
00:41:10I don't know.
00:41:11I don't know.
00:41:12I don't know.
00:41:13I don't know.
00:41:14I don't know.
00:41:15I don't know.
00:41:16I don't know.
00:41:17I don't know.
00:41:18I don't know.

00:42:38I don't know.
00:42:39I don't know.
00:42:40I don't know.
00:42:41I don't know.

00:42:52I don't know.
00:42:53I don't know.
00:42:54I don't know.
00:42:55I don't know.
00:42:56I don't know.
