00:00Now, back to Stiney and Guru, on 95.7 The Game.
00:29Mike Tirico, NBC Sports, describing the play where Christian McCaffrey essentially went
00:34down.
00:35He knew something was wrong, second quarter, and uh...
00:39Man.
00:40Was having his best game this year, Stiney.
00:43Every running back was having their best game last night in the snow.
00:46I'm just talking about McCaffrey.
00:47Every running didn't, every running back didn't go out, but just to see him drop like that,
00:51you knew it was like, man, you gotta, and like you started the show, you didn't say
00:55it, but I will.
00:56That game was like a microcosm of their whole season, man.
01:00And we can focus, and we will on offense, but the defense is no better.
01:05But uh, I just want to ask you a question about Brock Purdy.
01:08How much, I'm asking you on the Stiney meter, does your quarterback not being able to be
01:14at his best in conditions, how much does that impact how much you would pay him?
01:20Well it's not just that he struggled in conditions, it's that he hasn't been great when the conditions
01:25are perfect either.
01:26This year, yep, but that's the year that matters.
01:32So Stiney, last year this group was Super Bowl contenders, and this year they're suddenly
01:35Bums.
01:36No, not Bums, but it's a year-to-year league.
01:38Don't say it's a year-to-year league if you don't believe it.
01:41You know what I'm saying?
01:43This team's not the same as last year, they're all a year older.
01:47And I mean, I just made a list, Ayuk, contract, McCaffrey, contract, then injury, Trent Williams,
01:54contract, injury, tragedy, Ricky Pearsall, shot, Travarious Ward, tragedy, Debo, and
02:04Pepper, run-in, Purdy, regression, Warner, broken foot, I mean this thing hasn't gotten
02:11on track at any point this year.
02:14I would add Kyle's play calling to that.
02:17It has to be on there.
02:19Not the coach, just the play calling, to me.
02:23And he became a bad play caller in a year.
02:28I don't know what the answer is to that.
02:30I don't know what the...
02:31One of the reasons that I think they're in this predicament is that nobody's been consistent
02:39offensively on this team.
02:42They've been, other than Kittle, they've been mediocre.
02:47I don't know what you do with Brock Purdy.
02:50I have no idea what you do with Brock Purdy.
02:54But if he needs seven all-pros around him, well then you've got a decision to make about
03:01what you're going to do with him long-term.
03:04But Stani, this is the same cast he's been with since the inception of him being the
03:07starting quarterback.
03:09Right, so is it just fluke that they're losing these games?
03:15If you think it's a fluke and they'll come back next, I don't think so.
03:19All right, I'm with you, but I'll say this to that.
03:24It's not like they're not moving the ball.
03:26And I'm going big picture for the offense.
03:29You've been moving the ball all year.
03:31All of a sudden now it's when you get to the red zone, that's a problem.
03:36And that's why he gets paid to coach all the players up.
03:40He's the leader.
03:41But Stani, if all of a sudden now they can't get it going in the red zone, I don't think
03:47it's too far-fetched to say when you talk about the players being inconsistent and we
03:52get it.
03:53What about his play?
03:54What if they've cottoned up to him?
03:58Because we can't come at George Kittle right now and say...
04:00Well he dropped the pass on third and two.
04:03Exactly.
04:04Right, but he caught a touchdown.
04:05He's been a touchdown machine this season.
04:07He's been a touchdown machine this season.
04:09Why don't they use him more?
04:11That's a Kyle issue.
04:12Because if they use him more in the pass game, they can't run.
04:16Forget running, Stani.
04:17Because they're trying to win games and score points.
04:19Okay, well they don't have a quarterback who can throw it downfield.
04:22They don't have an offensive line that can protect.
04:25Well the answer to all those is, right now you're right, but they did in the past.
04:29Right, but again...
04:30Okay, well then you know what?
04:33Maybe next year we can recreate four years ago with the same players.
04:37Didn't we learn this lesson with the Warriors?
04:39But I feel like you think they just got 20 draft picks and there's a credit card with
04:44no max on it.
04:46It's harder than just...
04:47Well that's what they did.
04:48No, I'm saying to fix it now.
04:51Like Trent Williams is yours.
04:52You messed up!
04:53Well, yeah.
04:54You know, I mean look...
04:56Or you had bad luck, man.
04:58You know, nobody wants to say, like people, I don't...
05:01You think that 52 guys on that team, they have a 53-man roster.
05:08You think all 52 guys just said, well, yeah, just pay McCaffrey and everybody's fine with
05:15it.
05:17Everybody was fine with it.
05:18You think the team knew that McCaffrey wasn't healthy when they signed him to the extension?
05:23I'll bet you they knew.
05:24And I'll bet you the players knew.
05:26And they did it anyway.
05:28And Ayyuk was crying again about...
05:32That's too simple to explain why everybody's not doing their job.
05:35My point is, you know what?
05:39Christian McCaffrey was hurt and they paid him a boatload of money and he's missed the
05:43first eight games and now he's going to miss the rest of the season.
05:46Those are the kind of mistakes you can't overcome.
05:48Okay, gotcha.
05:50You paid Brandon Ayyuk, he got in here, he stung, and now he's hurt.
05:54But they didn't know he was going to get hurt to where he couldn't finish the season.
05:56Exactly.
05:57Well, maybe they should...
05:58I don't even care about the injury.
05:59If Ayyuk were healthy right now, they'd be 5-7.
06:02Well we don't know that.
06:03They lost by...
06:04Yeah.
06:05Okay, so then...
06:06Well, if you're going to say, well, we don't know that, fine.
06:07Then bring everybody back for next year and keep your fingers crossed.
06:13You know?
06:14I mean...
06:15Wow.
06:16It's like nobody's keeping accountability on the players who have all had terrible years.
06:23And okay, you don't like Kyle Shanahan?
06:27Do something about it.
06:28Well, I'll say this to that.
06:29Who at the time of the McCaffrey signing was bucking up saying, you guys are crazy or second
06:34guessing every...
06:35Right.
06:36And this is...
06:37It was the right thing to do.
06:40Or was it?
06:41No, it wasn't.
06:42How can you say that?
06:44What would you have done?
06:45My point is this.
06:46What would you have done?
06:47I said the same thing about the Warriors.
06:48When you get to this...
06:49I'm not asking about the Warriors.
06:50I'm asking you what you would have said to McCaffrey.
06:53You would have paid him, Stiney.
06:54My point is...
06:55Come on, man.
06:56Okay.
06:57And this is what you got.
06:58There were no good decisions.
06:59When Brandon Ayyuk acts like he acts, and he's in a contract year, you either pay him
07:04or you don't.
07:05And guess what?
07:06Neither's good.
07:07Christian McCaffrey, what's a contract extension?
07:10He's hurt.
07:11You either want to pay him or not.
07:13You pay him.
07:14Okay.
07:15Trent Williams makes a fool out of you all offseason.
07:17Well, we can't win without him.
07:19He's Draymond Green.
07:20You can't win with him.
07:21You can't win without him.
07:23So it's a pie where everybody's got their hands in it, and everybody's responsible for
07:29it.
07:30But I'm telling you right now, I guarantee you some of Christian McCaffrey's teammates
07:34are probably saying, well, that was kind of messed up.
07:40I'm just saying.
07:41Yes.
07:42And I already mentioned Trent Williams' tragedy.
07:45Oh, yeah.
07:46Thoughts and prayers.
07:47Let's go to Antonio in Oakland.
07:48What's up, Antonio?
07:49How you doing?
07:50Oh, man.
07:51I'm feeling so damn bad.
07:52I think some of the games, like the ones we lost to the division teams, those were fluky.
08:04But so many injuries, man.
08:06I think Trent Williams and Nick Bosa, they set the tone on both ends of the ball.
08:09And it's like, it's just amazing how bad they look without those two, man.
08:12I mean, Trent Williams, top 10 left tackle ever.
08:14Nick Bosa, DPOI winner.
08:16So they are important.
08:17But, you know, as far as Brock Purdy goes, without him, I mean, I wouldn't give him,
08:21like, a super max.
08:22You know, he better take a pay cut so he can keep this freaking team around him.
08:25Because at the end of the day, every quarterback needs talent around him, to be honest with
08:28you.
08:29But I don't like how it's going, and I don't think we're going to make the playoffs.
08:31But if we do, you know, I'll cheer him on.
08:33But it's looking terrible, man.
08:35Don't blame Shanahan for everything, though.
08:37What's that?
08:38What was the last thing?
08:39Don't blame Shanahan for everything.
08:40Yeah.
08:41No.
08:42When you're 5 and 7, there's enough blame to go around to everybody.
08:46Because the coach is responsible for the team.
08:48Even if, like you said, they've been inconsistent.
08:50You're best players.
08:51I don't argue that.
08:52And I think the play calling hasn't been up to par.
08:55Defensively, you don't have the guys.
08:57And, you know, do you want to spend 20 minutes on the defensive coordinator?
09:03We can, Stiney.
09:04But I don't know.
09:05Now, he doesn't have the pieces, Sorensen, or they're not being creative enough.
09:10But they owned the lines in years past.
09:14That was a Niner staple.
09:16And all of a sudden, Vamoose.
09:20We went into the season, and there were a lot of very smart 49er fans who said,
09:26our offensive line is not very good.
09:29We didn't spend enough time and money on the offensive line.
09:33Right.
09:34Okay.
09:35Their defensive line, they lost hard gray.
09:39Injuries, yeah.
09:40Yeah, okay, injuries.
09:41They're coming back next year, then.
