00:00In Palestine, at least 12 people, including three children, were killed during a shelling
00:15carried out by the Israeli occupation forces in the southern Gaza Strip.
00:23In Puerto Rico, 98% of power has been restored after a massive blackout that affected 90%
00:29of the country's customers.
00:34As of January 1st, Ghana allows visa-free entry to citizens from all African countries.
00:45Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in Havana, Cuba.
00:49We begin with the news.
01:08In Palestine, at least 12 people, including three children, were killed during a shelling
01:13carried out by the Israeli occupation forces in the southern Gaza Strip.
01:17According to local media, this new attack targeted tens of displaced people located
01:22in the so-called humanitarian zone of Al-Mawassi, leaving also 15 people injured.
01:28In this sense, the Palestinian Authority sent civil protection teams and medical personnel
01:32to the place to recover the bodies and assess the wounded.
01:36In addition, it was confirmed that the Director General of the Palestinian Police in the Gaza
01:41Strip, Mahmoud Saleh, was killed in the airstrike perpetrated by the Israeli Zionist Army.
01:47I went to the place of the attack and found wounded people on the ground, most of them
01:55were children, as well as two women martyrs.
02:01You call these safe areas?
02:03We came here on the basis that this is a safe area, but we came here for nothing.
02:08There is no safe area.
02:10What can we do?
02:12Let Arab countries do something.
02:14We don't want food, we don't want water, we just want an end to the bloodshed here.
02:18We want the killing of children to stop.
02:21What have they done to deserve this?
02:25We stay in Palestine as early Thursday morning the Israeli force conducted raids in the occupied
02:31West Bank, arresting several Palestinian citizens.
02:35According to the Wafa News Agency, the military arrested a young man in the village of Kafr
02:40Khalil in the Nablus Governorate after raiding his house and confiscating his vehicle.
02:47Soldiers also entered the neighbourhoods in Nablus city and Al Ain refugee camp.
02:52Meanwhile, two Palestinians were arrested in the nearby city of Kalkilia, three more
02:57in Bethlehem and another in the village of Beit HaFayar.
03:01Since the onslaught of the Israeli offensive against Palestine in October 2023, more than
03:0612,000 people have been detained by the Zionist army in the occupied West Bank.
03:17They demolished this house which housed a family of seven.
03:20My son who is arrested doesn't own a house to himself.
03:22Just like his siblings, he was living in this house, but he didn't own it.
03:28It hurts because we're living this injustice and it feels like such injustice doesn't exist
03:33anywhere else in the whole world.
03:35This injustice continues and no one is calling them out for it.
03:39No one is punishing them.
03:40Someone needs to stand up to them, to stop them and call them out for their actions.
03:47The Centre for the Protection of Palestinian Journalists once again called on the international
03:52community, especially the United Nations, to stop Israeli attacks against journalists
03:57in the Gaza Strip.
03:58In a communique, the entity warned that the number of professionals killed in the coastal
04:02enclave since October 2023 represents three times the number of communicators killed during
04:09the Second World War.
04:10They also warned that the high number of journalists killed in Gaza will have long-term effects
04:15in Palestine.
04:17In this regard, they stressed that the world must assume its responsibilities and take
04:21decisive action to stop Israeli violations and ensure respect for human rights in the
04:27occupied territories.
04:31Lebanon reports systematic violations by Israel of the ceasefire agreement in force
04:36since November 27, 2024.
04:39The Tel Aviv forces carried out illegal military operations, raiding houses and invading neighbourhoods
04:45in southern Lebanon.
04:47The Sionist troops also reportedly bombarded the towns of Beit Leif and gathered with rockets.
04:53In the face of this violation of the ceasefire, the Hezbollah resistance movement reaffirmed
04:58the firmness of its militancy in the struggle against the Israeli enemy.
05:19On Thursday, Indian authorities removed hundreds of tons of toxic waste remaining for over
05:2440 years after the world's deadliest industrial disaster struck in the city of Bhopal.
05:30Around a dozen trucks carried the 337 tons of waste in a slow convoy to the disposal
05:37site some 225 km away at Pitharmur town.
05:42According to State Gas Relief and Rehabilitation Department Director Sawantra Kumar Singh,
05:49the convoy has been fortified with the highest security protocol ever witnessed in the movement
05:55of industrial waste in the country.
05:56For decades, people blamed a high level of sickness on groundwater pollution after the
06:01toxic gas leak from the Union Carbide factory in December 1984.
06:06Therefore, this initiative by the Indian authorities will substantially improve the living conditions
06:13of the communities near the disaster area.

06:38Welcome back to From the South.
06:39In Puerto Rico, 98% of power has been restored after a massive blackout that affected 90%
06:46of the country's customers.
06:48Precisely, Luma Energy, the private company that oversees energy distribution in the nation,
06:53has announced that service has been restored to 100% of customers in the regions of Bayamón,
06:59Cahuas and San Juan, while work continues to fully re-establish the service in the remaining
07:04areas.
07:05The figure represents an improvement from Wednesday, when 77% of customers had electricity
07:10and an unexplained disconnection of the Palo Seco and Aguirre power stations led to a new
07:16blackout.
07:18The incident, which Luma's preliminary check blames on a fault in a subway power line to
07:23the south, adds on the ongoing energy problems the Caribbean nation has been facing in recent
07:28years.
07:32In Honduras, President Xiomara Castro warned on Wednesday that she will force out US military
07:38bases if President-elect Donald Trump orders massive deportations of Hondurans when he
07:43takes office on January 20th.
07:54To Honduran people, I would like to say that we hope that the new US administration's democratically
08:00elected president, Donald Trump, is open to constructive and friendly dialogue, and does
08:07not take unnecessary reprisals against our migrants, who usually make a great contribution
08:14to the US economy.
08:16In the face of a hostile attitude of mass deportation of our people, we will have to
08:21consider changing our policy of cooperation with the United States, especially in the
08:27military field, where for decades they have maintained military bases in our territory
08:33without paying a penny, which in this case will lose all reasons to exist in Honduras.
08:42In the United States, the number of people dead after a mass shooting in New Orleans
08:46rose to 15 during the course of the day.
08:49The authorities have qualified the event as a terrorist attack.
08:53Some 30 people were injured in the attack, which occurred when the driver of a pickup
08:57truck mowed down dozens of people off downtown Bourbon Street.
09:02The tourists heard of the city and closed to traffic during New Year's celebrations.
09:08After charging into the crowd, the attacker got out of his vehicle and began firing a
09:13gun.
09:14The authorities identified the perpetrator as Shasum Din Bahar Shabbar, a 42-year-old
09:20US citizen who was shot dead by police.
09:27In this context, the President of the United States, Joe Biden, stated that the alleged
09:32perpetrator of the mass shooting had served in the US Army and was inspired by the Islamic
09:37State.
09:38The FBI has reported to me the killer was an American citizen, born in Texas.
09:45He served in the United States Army on active duty for many years.
09:49He also served in the Army Reserve until a few years ago.
09:53The FBI also reported to me that mere hours before the attack, he posted videos on social
09:59media indicating that he was inspired by ISIS, expressing a desire to kill.
10:08The ISIS flag was found in his vehicle, which he rented to conduct this attack.
10:13Cuba commemorates the 66th anniversary of the departure of the Freedom Caravan of the
10:18rebel army led by Fidel Castro in 1959.
10:21Media, social and political organizations, as well as people in general, remember the
10:26date that marks a milestone in the history of the Caribbean island.
10:30The caravan departed on January 2nd from the city of Santiago de Cuba to the Cuban capital
10:35on a journey of more than 1,000 kilometers, which ended on January 8th.
10:40The event signified the first direct encounter between the Cuban people and the guerrilla
10:45leader, who later would build a socialist project of world reference.
10:51After entering the capital, Fidel Castro proclaimed victory over the troops of Fulgencio Batista's
10:56regime, proving that long-deferred dreams of social justice can be fulfilled with revolutionary
11:02unity.
11:19Hungarian gymnast Agnes Keleti, the oldest living Olympic medal winner, passed away on
11:25January 2nd at the age of 103.
11:28Born in Budapest in 1921, Keleti won her first Hungarian championship in 1940.
11:34The gymnast survived the Holocaust during World War II by hiding in the countryside
11:39but lost family members to the Nazi concentration camps.
11:43She went on to win her first Olympic gold at the Helensky Games, Helsinki Games in 1952
11:50and then won four more at the Melbourne in 1956, becoming, at 35, the oldest female gymnast
11:57to ever earn the coveted medal.
12:00Keleti's press official informed of her passing on Thursday due to pneumonia.
12:05Of her legacy, the president of the International Olympic Committee, Thomas Beck, said she has
12:09demonstrated the power of strong determination and courage to overcome tragedy.
12:28the world's most recent events.
12:34Fun, a short break, don't go away.
12:58Welcome back to From the South.
13:00In South Korea, demonstrators gathered in front of the residence of ousted President
13:05Jun Suk-kyo on Thursday as the former head of state continues to resist arrest for a
13:10third day following his impeachment over a failed martial law declared on December 3rd.
13:15This way, Jun's legal team warned that police officers attempting to detain him could be
13:20arrested by his presidential security service or even civilians.
13:24In this context, the ousted president issued a message to his supporters, vowing to fight
13:30to the end.
13:31The Seoul's court ordered a detention issued after he evaded multiple requests to appear
13:37and obstructed an investigation into whether his brief seizure of power on December 3rd
13:43amounted to a rebellion.
13:48In China, import tariffs have been lowered to increase domestic demand and stimulate
13:53the economy.
13:55The authorities announced that they will apply provisional import tariffs, which are lower
14:00than most favored nations' tariffs, on 935 products, as part of an annual tariff adjustment
14:07plan.
14:08On the other hand, import tariffs on some goods will be raised to support the development
14:13of domestic industries.
14:15Economist Tian Yun pointed out that China's large-scale liberalization, as the main ally
14:21of more than 150 countries in the world, opens up new opportunities for developing countries.
14:32In Vietnam, local authorities reported about 51 traffic accidents nationwide on the first
14:38day of the New Year 2025.

14:46injured as a result of the incidents, most of which took place on the roads, while only
14:52one occurred on the railway, killing one person.
14:55In this regard, during the day, the traffic police forces inspected and detected at least
15:0113,591 infractions, imposing fines for a total amount of $1,120,000.
15:10In addition, 82 automobiles and more than 4,000 motorcycles were temporarily confiscated
15:16and around 2,603 driver's licenses were revoked.
15:25On Thursday, Montenegro declared three days of national mourning, a day after a gunman
15:30went on a rampage, killing 12 people, including two children.
15:35The streets of Sintinje and Vallice, the towns where the incident took place, were deserted
15:40on Thursday morning, and a police patrol was stationed in front of the gunman's house
15:45at the entry of the village.
15:47Meanwhile, in the country's capital, Major Zasa Mujovic said that candles would be lit
15:52for the victims at the main square of the city on Thursday evening.
15:56On the other hand, Prime Minister Milojovic Spajic labelled the shootings as a terrible
16:02tragedy and stressed that it should lead to a review of the country's gun ownership laws.
16:07I came out for an investigation at six different locations, so we had six crime scenes.
16:20We established that 12 people have been killed, including two children.
16:28What I can tell you this morning about the patients' condition in our hospital is that
16:32three of them, two male and one female, are in stable condition.
16:37They had surgeries last night.
16:39This morning they woke up and have been detached from a machine that helps them breathe.
16:44The fourth patient is in an extremely critical condition.
16:47He sustained head injuries.
16:50Surgeons have operated on him with the help of other surgical teams.
16:55Italian authorities continue the search for 20 missing people including five women and
17:00three children off the coast of Lampedusa after attempting to cross the Mediterranean
17:04Sea.

17:11and is now under the temporary custody of the Juvenile Court of Palermo while his remaining
17:17relatives are breached.

17:47As of January 1st, Ghana is allowing visa-free entry to citizens from all African countries
17:53in a move aimed at building stronger ties among the continent.
17:56The measure comes after President Nana Akufo-Addo pledged to make it a reality early in the
18:03year during the 2024 Africa Prosperity Dialogues, effectively approving the action later in
18:09December.
18:10The new approach is expected to increase tourism, trade and travel to the West African country,
18:15as analysts have previously pointed to visa restrictions as an obstacle to these sectors.
18:21With the move, Ghana then becomes the fifth nation on the continent to allow the entry
18:26of all African passport holders after Rwanda, the Seychelles, Bikambia and Benin.
18:34In Nigeria, the capital metropolis of Lagos hosted the Fanti Carnival on January 1st,
18:52a yearly tradition that welcomes the New Year by celebrating the diverse blend of the city's
18:56Brazilian and Cuban heritage.
18:59Also known as Careta Carnival, this is a 19th-century tradition brought by returnee

19:17in West Africa, renowned as an inclusive festival with no discriminatory tendencies where people
19:23dress up with costumes to dance in a colourful display of the shared rich culture.
19:54The key aspect of the celebration is that everyone comes home.
