00:18at the brink of February 9th elections amid waves of violence and political crisis.
00:30A U.S. federal court issued a preliminary ruling to hold back from implementation President
00:35Trump's executive order on the birthright citizenship.
00:46And the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Israel informed the country's decision to withdraw
00:51the United Nations Human Rights Council following in the steps of the U.S. administration.
01:17Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in Caracas, Venezuela.
01:30We begin with the news, stay with us.
01:36On Thursday, the Ecuadorian presidential nominees reached the final day of their electoral campaigns
01:41at the brink of February 9th elections amid waves of violence and political crisis.
01:47Over 13 million Ecuadorians are summoned to go to the polls on Sunday to decide the nation's future.
01:52Lately, estimates advanced that current President Daniel Navarro and the candidate for the Citizens'
01:57Revolution movement, Luisa González, are the nominees with more voting intentions.
02:02It is worth highlighting that these presidential elections will be held amid a new scenario
02:07marked by political irregularities and new acts of violence in the country.
02:17In the run-up to Sunday's presidential elections and its fight against drug trafficking,
02:23the Ecuadorian government has ordered the reinforcement of the control.
02:28On Monday, President Daniel Navarro ordered the militarization of the country's ports,
02:33with Navy personnel patrolling the access channel to the Gulf of Guayaquil.
02:38According to the head of state, the objective is to warranty national security in the event
02:43of any destabilizing event and to prevent the trafficking of arms and drugs during the election process.
02:49Navarro also ordered to increase military presence on the borders with Colombia and with Peru
02:55and to close the border passages between next Saturday and Monday.
02:59It is important to note that this is the first time that borders will be closed during elections.
03:06The first Vice President of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela, Díaz-Lao Cabello,
03:10informed that the opposition received more than $1.8 billion from the United States Treasury Department alone.
03:18During his TV show, Cabello pointed out that not only the USAID financed the Venezuelan extremist opposition,
03:26but it also had funding from the Treasury Department.
03:31He also assured that in the presidential elections of July 28th,
03:35the government of the United States financed the political parties or the extreme right
03:39for their destabilization campaigns against the country.
03:43In this sense, the political leader ratified his denunciation to the extreme right
03:47for receiving financing from the USAID to attempt against the peace of the country.
03:53This is worth gold with this cover.
03:57This is worth gold.
03:59Here is the source of financing, who they gave money to,
04:03and it is not the United States Agency for International Development.
04:07This hurts more.
04:09Here is the source of financing, who they gave money to,
04:13and it is not the United States Agency for International Development.
04:17This hurts more.
04:20Here is the source of financing, who they gave money to,
04:24and it is not the United States Agency for International Development.
04:28This hurts more to the American citizens because it is the Treasury Department.
04:32The proofs are at your disposal.
04:34I am going to read some of them.
04:36Here you have them.
04:38More than $1,800 million delivered.
04:40More than $1,800 million delivered.
04:42In Colombia, army troops have clashed heavily with the National Liberation Army, ELN,
04:47in the northern department of Norte de Santander.
04:51The Minister of Defense, Ivan Velazquez, has confirmed that the fighting is taking place
04:55in the rural area of Lourdes.
04:57According to the office, one member of the Juan Fernando Porres Front
05:01was neutralized and at least two have been captured,
05:05deporting also the seizure of arms and ammunition.
05:07The operation is being carried out jointly with the Air Force,
05:11the National Police and the Attorney General's Office,
05:15in the control of Catatumbo and neutralizing the criminal actions of the guerrilla group,
05:19according to the Defense Office.
05:27In Argentina, the far-right government of Javier Millet
05:31announced the modification of the gender identity law
05:33three days after the people protagonized
05:35a massive federal march for diversity and against fascism.
05:39Precisely, the spokesperson of the Presidential Office, Manuel Adorni,
05:44informed that the government would postpone the hormones treatment
05:48that is not allowed after the age of 16,
05:50only with parents' consent and integral medical assessment,
05:54two after 18 years old.
05:56After the President himself shared a series of fake news regarding the current identity law,
06:00many see this as a representative response
06:04after Argentina's massive anti-fascist march last Saturday.
06:14In Peru, transportation workers went on strike
06:18in rejection of the management of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications.
06:22The protest, which brings together unions and other social organizations,
06:26demands improvement works on the rough access roads to the city.
06:30At the same time, the National Transport Workers' Alliance
06:34ratified the decision to paralyze work in Lima
06:38in protest against the murder of dozens of transport workers
06:43for refusing to pay quotas to extortionists.
06:45In this sense, the President of the organization assured that
06:4920,000 urban services buses will participate in the protest
06:53and will march from the popular peripheral neighborhoods to the center of Lima.
06:57He indicated that small businessmen from the large textile production
07:01and commerce zone of Gamarra will join the protest.
07:05And now we have a short break coming up,
07:09but we'll be right back, stay with us.
07:25Welcome back to From the South.
07:29A U.S. federal court issued a preliminary ruling
07:34to hold back from implementation President Trump's executive order
07:38on birthright citizenship.
07:42Precisely, Maryland federal court's district justice, Deborah Boardman,
07:46decided to issue the injunction indefinitely after listening carefully
07:50to the arguments in favor of freezing the decree.
07:54The justice further noted that Supreme Court have always protected birthright citizenship,
07:58adding that President Donald Trump's order disregarded the 14th Amendment.
08:03The Supreme Court had been already on hold nationwide to do a separate lawsuit
08:07filed by four states at Washington court to stop the order.
08:17In Guatemala, the visit of U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio
08:21was rejected by protesters who described it as an attack on national sovereignty
08:25since, among other measures, the Central American country committed to detain
08:29with the objective of reaching the United States. Let's see.
08:35The visit of the United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio
08:39to Guatemala has been denounced as a new attempt to interfere in the region
08:43by the Guatemala chapter of the anti-fascist international.
08:47In the first place, we must consider that the mere presence
08:51of Marco Rubio in Guatemala is an attack against the sovereignty of the country.
08:56I can tell you that once the United States puts its hands on other countries,
09:00it is not to help.
09:04Protesters remind Marco Rubio of the dark legacy left by the United States
09:08in 1954 when he orchestrated the overthrow of President Jacobo Arbenz,
09:12who inherited inequality and injustice in Guatemala.
09:18Let us remember that Guatemala was invaded in 1954
09:22by American imperialism. We know perfectly well
09:26what a military invasion of our country is.
09:32Officials from both countries assure that the visit is diplomatic,
09:36focused on dealing with migration, the fight against drug trafficking,
09:40and other strategic alliances.
09:44We believe in a new migration model that allows us to efficiently
09:48address the phenomenon of migration, promoting solutions to the causes
09:52that have forced so many Guatemalans to leave their communities,
09:56their families, their country.
10:00The country's president ruled out
10:04having discussed the safe third country category.
10:08The protesters do not rule out that it could have been part of one of the imperialist impositions.
10:12We reject the fact that Guatemala assumes
10:16this commitment as a safe third country,
10:20not because we are against our Latin American brothers,
10:24but because there are simply no conditions, not even for the Guatemalan population.
10:30The protesters claim to be aware of the historical burden
10:34and the current context, which demand respect for national sovereignty
10:38and an evolution in policies that are negatively impacting the most disadvantaged.
10:46Indian lawmakers disrupted the ordinary session of Parliament
10:50by rallying against the alleged inappropriate treatment of deputies from the US.
10:54The opposition legislators denounced that the US military plane
10:58returned 104 Indian migrants wearing shackles on their arrival and legs.
11:02Authorities described the action as an insult to India.
11:06Hence, they demanded a debate on the violation of human rights
11:10in the way US officers had made the arrests.
11:14Meanwhile, Indian foreign ministry officials pointed out that the target of India
11:18must be fighting off illegal migration.
11:26The Chinese government reaffirmed its commitment to privacy
11:30and data security after ministries in South Korea blocked access
11:34to the Chinese artificial intelligence DeepSeek website over alleged security concerns.
11:38Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Wu Yao-kun
11:42ensured that the nation has never required, nor will it request,
11:46companies or individuals to illegally collect or store data.
11:50The diplomat affirmed that Beijing has firmly opposed the practice
11:54of overly eliminating the concept of national security
11:58and politicizing the economic and technological issues.
12:02The spokesperson further indicated that China will firmly safeguard
12:06the legitimate interests of Chinese enterprises.

12:42The Human Rights Council of making efforts to demonize the Tel Aviv regime
12:46by passing over 100 condemnatory resolutions.
12:50The Israeli withdrawal comes amid recent international pressure
12:54aimed at holding the Israeli authorities accountable for the genocide in the Gaza Strip.
13:06Gazans are overwhelmed by seeing their towns razed by Israeli occupation forces.
13:10Our collaborator, Huda Hegassi, provides us more details.
13:18I've been moved to the Al-Shiyaida area, eastern part of Gaza City, north of the Strip.
13:24This area which was invaded and razed by the Israeli occupation forces
13:28as you can notice behind my back, all the area has been fully destroyed
13:32by the Israeli occupation airstrikes and military tanks.
13:36We have to say that this area has been attacked several times by the Israeli army.
13:40So each invasion led to huge destruction.
13:44So each aggression left the area fully inhospitable.
13:48And we can notice houses, markets, everything has been shattered to pieces, ruined.
13:54So the only thing we can see are mountains of rubble and ruins.
14:00We must note that the area was residential, full of markets, a very lively neighborhood.
14:06And you can see a deadly area instead.
14:10As there aren't any houses, no water or power supply.
14:14And people don't know where to go.
14:18Despite this, after the proclamation of the humanitarian truce,
14:22people have started to return to these places.
14:26But most people have been surprised,
14:30overwhelmed by seeing all this devastation they had found.
14:34However, as we can see, the resistance of the Gazan people
14:38made possible that this area which is literally inhospitable
14:42turned into a lively and vital place again.
14:46We are starting to see tents with markets
14:50and even we can see people who started pitching their tents
14:54to start residing in what were once their homes,
14:58which were shattered to pieces, ruins.
15:02So they have pitched their tents on top of the ruins.
15:06The bloodshed has stopped.
15:10But now there is another, stronger suffering.
15:14When we came here we were overwhelmed by the destruction, by the victims under the rubble.
15:18We don't know where to go, we don't know what to do.
15:22We don't know how to get food, water or anything.
15:26We came here and we had to pitch this tent to have a roof over our heads.
15:30As we have heard, when people returned to this area
15:34they were overwhelmed by the huge destruction they had found.
15:38Many Gazans have lost their houses, their businesses,
15:42they have lost all their properties.
15:46We had spoken about the bloodshed, the genocidal war, killings and bombings
15:50have raised with the whole Gaza Strip.
15:54But the difficult humanitarian situation of Gazans will remain for a long time.
15:58Mostly Gazans will live in tents for a long time.
16:02People do not know what to do, where to ask for help.
16:06But what we can see is that people are broken, overwhelmed by this genocidal war
16:10waged by the Israeli occupation forces
16:14for 15 concurrent months in the Gaza Strip.
16:18So the only thing Gazans wish for right now is at least to recover their houses
16:22and recover a place where they can shelter.
16:26They try to forget all suffering they have gone through during all this time.
16:34We have a second short break coming up, but we'll be right back, so don't go away.
16:44Welcome back to From the South.
16:48Australian Parliament unanimously passed a bill
16:52condemning hate crimes across the nation.
16:56The bill obtained 117 votes in favour and 13 against
17:00and it aims to safeguard new treats such as race, religion and gender.
17:04Thus, the approved regulation amendments stipulate mandatory prison sentences
17:08for crimes of terrorism and exhibition of hate symbols.
17:12The policy has come out in view of increasing attacks by some religious groups
17:16that had committed several offences as vandalising and burning infrastructures
17:20or school belongings belonging to different ideologies.
17:28...these changes because we are very concerned
17:32about the rise of anti-Semitism in our community.
17:36We want to send an unambiguous and clear message that civic society
17:40and the NSW Government oppose it in all circumstances.
17:44But I want to make it equally clear that the suite of reforms
17:48that we are introducing will apply to everybody.
17:52Racism has no place in modern Australia.
17:56This legislation applies to all people of all faiths.
18:00It is never okay to attack, to demean, to incite hatred or fear
18:04against a fellow Australian on the basis of their race.
18:08It is the definition of racism.
18:12As thousands gathered in New Zealand's north to celebrate the country's National Day,
18:16Māori protests take place across the country.
18:20On Wednesday, at the event of the holiday, hundreds of Māori protesters
18:24staged a silent demonstration by turning their backs on government ministers.
18:28The National Day marks the 1840 Treaty of Waitangi
18:32between Māori chiefs and colonising British troops.
18:36What is seen as the birth of modern New Zealand.
18:40This year's commemorations come at a time of increased tensions
18:44as the government pursues policies considered by some to be anti-Māori
18:48including a bill which would re-interpret the Waitangi Treaty.
18:52And in other information in the Democratic Republic of the Congo,
18:56the number of people killed in clashes in the city of Goma
19:00rises to 2,900
19:04according to the United Nations.
19:08The organisation has declared that the battle for the key town of Goma
19:12which M23 and Rwandan troops seized last week
19:16has left at least 2,900 dead,
19:20far higher than the previous figure of 900.
19:24In this context, Vivian van der Per, deputy head of the United Nations peacekeeping mission
19:28in the Democratic Republic of the Congo,
19:32reports that so far 2,000 bodies have been collected
19:36from the streets in recent days.
19:40The United Nations official also stated that the freeze on the US aid
19:44threatened to hamper the work of humanitarian partners in the region.
19:52These numbers come from the country team.
19:56We're actually actively helping the M23 collect bodies
20:00as decent a burial as they can manage
20:04is that so far 2,000 bodies have been collected from the Goma streets
20:08in recent days and 900 bodies remain in the morgues
20:12of the Goma hospitals. We do not think that this is
20:16that number would not go up. We expect this number to go up.
20:20We go to Nigeria now where a fire at an
20:24Islamic boarding school in the town of Kauranamoda left at least
20:2817 people dead. Local media reported the fire break out
20:32in a study room when students were sleeping.
20:36So far rescuers managed to evacuate around 100 students.
20:40The president of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, expressed his condolences
20:44for fatal casualties at the school and assured that safety must be the most
20:48important issue for owners. The head of state ordered the educational
20:52centres to prioritise the safety of students and urged to comply
20:56with safety regulations.
21:10In Morocco's tourist hub of Marrakech
21:14a contemporary African art fair has energized the local
21:18creative scene. The annual 154 Contemporary
21:22African Art Fair has drawn collectors, curators and
21:26art enthusiasts from across the world showcasing works from 30 galleries
21:30spanning 14 countries, both African and European.
21:34Named in reference to Africa's 54 countries, the fair was launched
21:38in London in 2013 before expanding to New York in
21:422015 and Marrakech in 2018. Among the works
21:46exhibited were those of Ethiopian, Sudanese, Nigerian and
21:50artists ranging from experimental photography to ceramic
21:54and figurative paintings.
22:02For Gallery 38, it's very important to be present at this
22:06fair because first and foremost it's a fair that puts the spotlight
22:10on artists from the African contemporary scene.
22:14As it happens, we've been a player from the outset who really wants to
22:18promote the African contemporary scene. So, on the one hand
22:22we're completely aligned in terms of our objectives and on the other hand
22:26our participation in this fair enables us to meet a public
22:30that we don't necessarily have access to all year round.
22:38So, it's a platform that is perhaps the first platform
22:42that has internationally exhibited artists from the African continent
22:46and the African diaspora. So, we started in London
22:50in 2013 where we launched the first edition of
22:541 to 54 London and we continued after we realized that there
22:58was a real interest, a real commitment and interest in contemporary
23:02art from Africa and the African diaspora.
23:06We thought we had to try and accelerate the inclusion of all these artists
23:10in the global world, in the art world in fact.
23:16And like this, we have come to the end of this News Brief, but remember
23:20you can find this and many other stories on our website at telestudyenglish.net
23:24and in our social medias. For Telestudy English, I'm Alejandra Garcia
23:28thank you for watching.
